TW: major character death (The Song of Achilles)

So. Patroclus dies.

I'm loud today because I visualized the emotion as vividly as I visualized the sequences. I'm a Greek myth kid so I already know the chariots, the battlefields, the clothes, etc. That's not why we're here.

We're here because live action tsoa.

Patroclus in a chariot, adorned in armor and a violence he prohibited himself to use for the past 27 years. Patroclus' body language changing in that moment, whereas the entire time beforehand he moved like the comfort person of the entire war camp. A man of medicine who becomes the golden boy of the battlefield at act 3.

I need upward camera angles on my boy the entire sequence of this fight to make him look bigger. Because he feels more than himself in that moment, doesn't he? There's literal lines of how empowered he feels, war notwithstanding. I need the bloodstained sky in the background to match the energy change in him. I need a closeup of the feral expression on his face during that short Sarpedon sequence and the wall climbing that followed afterwards.

I'll update this post when I finish reading how Achilles reacts to his boyfriend's death.

Talking about Characters from the Iliad/Odyssey that I liked a lot :3

(Alternative: I just talk about people who were on the page for like. A minute and then nothing because I really just wanted to talk about characters who weren’t like. As well known as others?)

Every day I fight the urge to talk about how much I dislike Song Of Achilles-

Okay anyways I wanna talk about characters from the like Iliad-Odyssey (sadly not Aeneid because I haven’t read that yet) that I really like because they always balance out the anger I feel when thinking about the artificial divide that had to happen between Pat and Achilles over Breisis is TSOA because-

Okay, okay aaa that’s not what this is about. If anyone wants to hear my thoughts feel free to tell me because I’d gladly give my take as someone who just kinda knows the myths and vibes with them (there’s a reason the Iliad is my favorite book)

Anyways characters/probably historical figures(??) from the Iliad/trojan war era and the odyssey that I really liked beyond like. The main crew. While I ramble note that I am just someone that likes these guys. I’m not giving amazing riveting new information. I just don’t really want to write out the SoN re-imagining nor do I want to try and revisit the Machaon and Podalirius concept work I was doing (or potentially mess around with some Ulysses dies at dawn concepts because aaa-) okay- okay,

I (obviously) like Machaon and Podalirius. Like I said I have some concept sketches of them buried in my Ibis paint somewhere. I really liked seeing them mentioned in the Iliad when they were, and the two of them just feel like an interesting concept to explore if I ever do more like. Actual mythology not just Pjo stuff here on the blog. Also this is devoid of anything but they have good character to bounce off each other and they live in my brain.

Palamedes! He’s not actually in the Iliad but was a prince who was in the Trojan war. He was the dude that had to fetch Odysseus and he’s also really interesting and I like thinking of him as the ‘straight-man’ to all of Agamemnon’s stuff before Odysseus took over the roll. I also really like his story :3

Is Sarpedon one of the more well known characters? Idk. I talk about Hector on here too so really I break my own rules but I like Sarpedon as a concept (you can tell I like a lot of these characters for the ideas they give the brain.) He’s an interesting fellow. Maybe one day I’ll actually have something insightful to say about him.

Okay Hector. I really like Hector, I like seeing him in conflict with his brother. I like the ideas and how Hector acts and how he like does stuff narratively. I like him for the same reason I like Demetrius in Midsummer nights dream. They’re both kinda just guys who have to put up with everyone around them and it’s silly. He also has the whole really big stone thing during the siege(?) of the Achaeans camps that was fun.

Now are the Odyssey guys and it’s literally just two people who caught my attention in the Odyssey.

Antinous. He was really like ahfiakfbsjjs in my mind. Between getting off the high that was reading the Iliad and being like gently laid down in the Odyssey I really liked him? He sucked don’t get me wrong, but I liked that he sucked. He was a little trash guy and I liked that, hand him over.

Peisistratus. For anyone who forgot him or doesn’t know who he is this is Telemachus’s friend and traveling buddy from Pylos. He just kinda appears at some point and I really like him. He feels scruffy in my head and I think he’s a really interesting character! Also I like the friendship between Telemachus and Peisistratus.

Also shoutout to Antilochus who I didn’t put down but he was also really fun.

Okay wow! I said literally nothing this entire post. But uh. Maybe I’ll actually post things more often about stuff like the Iliad and Odyssey? I’m obviously no like classics expert but hey. I like random people that are in my stories. Also Antinous. I genuinely didn’t think I liked him that much but now that I’m thinking about him he’s really silly- haha funny scruffy man. If anyone asks he is synonymous with the like-

i read tsoa for a research paper and christ almighty it is bad!!!! millers prose is just not good and the narrative was. weak…… (also that is leaving out the inaccuracy and everything)

i got to about 40 finished books this year, so maybe i’ll aim for 50 next year?? i try to keep the goals lax so as not to lose my love of the actual act of reading…

10 Anti LO Asks

1. here's the thing, if rachel wants to go with the later blending of helios and apollo, then cut helios and put apollo in his role instead. he's a god of truth, it would make sense if he told demeter what happened to her daughter and others what went down, but instead she bungled it by having both of them exist as basically the same being, so im not at all buying she's as researched as she claims, if at all. thats such an amateur mistake to make and yet...

2. RS has the same mentality of Madeline Miller (though at least TSOA was good) in that they're fully convinced they're feminist revolutionaries who "push back" against the patriarchal systems found in mythology but only instead show how they actually hold rather awful ideas about women. Seriously, both of them LOVE having powerful goddesses be abused by their parents, depowered, and r//ped to excuse their bad actions, yet they still think they're progressive feminists for this. It's so gross.

3. TBH Rachel insisting Persephone was a perfect, noble can-do-no-wrong heroine from the beginning absolutely fucked it up for her, because now she's trying to make her "morally complex" while still excusing her at the same time, so it doesn't give us a complex character, it gives us a character who gets away with murder and is demanding to be treated like an adult yet refuses to do so and happily lets herself be babied at every turn. She's not complex, she's an immature brat who Rachel coddles.

4. The fact the stans excuse Persephone's wrath and murder rampages because of Demeter's "helicopter parenting" is so like ... hello? I had strict helicopter parents too, but I still know how to control my emotions and not want to murder/torture people. Also, most kids with strict parents are mature way before their times, while Persephone still acts like a child and wants to be doted on.  I don't think Demeter was as much of a helicopter parent but more so one who spoiled Persephone rotten, IMHO.

5. It's weird how S2 is being so dragged out yet is also so rushed all at once. Like S1 was over two years and only two weeks wentt by, and now we're almost a 1 1/2 into S2 and only a week and a half has passed, yet it feels so much slower and badly panned/executed, especially this trial plot line, which has no stakes and is not how an actual trial goes. I don't have high hopes for the rest or even the ending if this is the best she can manage with all the help in the world to make it good.

6. what i dont get is everyone excuses h annd p because "theyre gods thats how they are" yet the same mentally isnt given towards everyone else? like if thats the excuse, eros shouldnt have gotten in trouble for killing ppl, hera shouldn't lash out at zeus and his mistresses (esp since she cheats too), minthe and thanatos and thetis should be excused, etc etc, but theyre not while h and p are? i dont care if theyre the main characters, the lack of consistent morality and rules is a huge issue.

7. tbh the fact thanatos is now reconned to be the closest thing hades ever had to a son and yet he STILL treated him terribly and mentally and emotionally scarred the poor kid makes me glad he cant have kids. no child shouldnt be brought into the world with such a terrible man as their father.

8. tbh iff persephoen actually felt remorse for her crimes and wanted to own up for them, then she wouldnt have kept it a secret to instead only focus on herself and party then  run away and hide at hades (only to again shop and party and not care about this crimes she claims shes so torn up about) until they found her and she was forced to go to court. the fact she ran and hid until she had no other option is proof enough she doesnt really care & rachel is saying one thing but showing us another.

9. i feel like a lot of hxp stories (LO being the most obvious to use this) love doing the "HxP is the anti Zeus and Hera" and it's like if the only way you can prove hxp is a good ship is by comparing them to a torn down, most well known chaotic marriage to make your ship look better, then theyre not actually that good of a ship lmao. like if hxp cant stand on its own without comparison and tearing others down. then thats a bad sign.

yes! i do read tsoa!! makes me insane just thinking about it. listen. where should i even begin. at first, i was thinking megumi as achilles, simply bc he’s from a renowned clan, simply bc he was the one who said to patroclus when they heard about possibly joining the trojan war, “if you have to go, you know i will go with you.” and the fact that achilles only ever looks at patroclus, he does not care about anyone else. when patroclus died, red is all he sees. with patroclus gone, he does not care about the war anymore. it is only hector that he seeks. and that kind of violent rage, i can see that it can(?) stem out of megumi. and how he tried to fight sukuna to bring yuuji back in ep 5.

but after contemplating it much further, ur right as well. yuuji is achilles, and megumi patroclus. the violent devotion patroclus has for achilles mirrors what megumi has for yuuji. and the fact that yuuji, the boy that megumi loves, is on borrowed time too. when patroclus heard about the prophecy, about how achilles would die by the end, he was so grief-stricken and tried to stop him from danger etc and it reminds me, of how yuuji swallowed the first finger and megumi was all, “pls save him. its my personal feelings.” and on the first meeting too. like how big of an impact that was. its crazy to even think about it.

you have the big quotes that i equate with them as per the book! but also here’s my other favorites:

1) “[...] and i thought of how many nights i had lain awake in this room loving him in silence.”

2) “when he died, all things swift and beautiful and bright would be buried with him.”

the one theme i absolutely adore about itafushi is: the act of choosing. and how again, it mirrors achilles and patroclus. if patroclus cowers against thetis, he would leave achilles be. but he is afraid still, and he loves achilles fiercely, still. and how megumi knows now that sukuna might do sth to him, might harm him, but he still wants to stay beside yuuji, knowing any possible implications that it will bring. despite the catastrophe happened in shibuya, he chose to stay with yuuji, still. he chose yuuji, still. megumi knows and megumi trusts that yuuji himself wont ever hurt him. and can you even love someone u dont trust? megumi, megumi doesnt have to be a healer like shoko to heal / soothe yuuji’s heart, he does it anyway. i was so glad that after their reunion (chap 143 onwards), yuuji was himself again. megumi has a big impact on yuuji as much as yuuji on megumi. and thats just so lovely, isnt it?

- it’s clear and blatantly obvious to everyone who’s ever laid eyes on achilles that he’s the most beautiful person on the planet, he looks like a painting & greek statue brought to life, he knows his beauty but honestly doesn’t always give that much thought to it - it’s very natural to him

- i think he has a melodic, deep voice that literally is one of the best sounds you’d hear in your life

- achilles eyes look like the softest green grass, looks like a light shade of mint, looks like sea green! his hair is like a halo of golden strands - his skin is pretty soft and a golden tan color, has the most lovely smile and laugh and no one can resist this beautiful bastard

- multi-talented obviously, he’s an ace at everything he does and never comes in last, is a winner in all aspects and while he has pride in this, he cares more about how he himself is emotionally after meeting patroclus, he takes more pride in his love, compassion, and humanity due to his adoration of patroclus

- he took up art & sculpting because he wanted to paint patroclus and put it on his wall and wanted to sculpt patroclus’ body because that would require very deep research if you catch my drift

- achilles smells like honey & almonds, pomegranates, and the sea and it’s intoxicating

- achilles is known to be very honest and simple? but i just think that he has no room for fallacies and just wants to lay it all out on the table, he believes in action and esp when it comes to love, he wants to experience it fully bc he knows gods, demigods, anyone and everyone doesn’t always get to experience true love & he has that with patroclus

SPOILERS OBVIOUSLY (actually go ahead and filter the young royals tag bc i have way too many gifsets in my likes)

i lit rally finished it last night 🤪 i was like "one more episode" and then i saw it was the last one so first point of criticism: not enough episodes 😤 i really really liked it tho! gave me BIG tsoa vibes and u know how i feel about that hehe i loooved how authentic it was in the script, actors/characters, acting performances, costumes, makeup etc and that's also what i loved about skam (us productions taking notes from northern european shows when!!!). i liked the texting bits etc too like the modern aspects! the plot was kindaaa predictable but i liked the little twists they put in ("i'm not the crown prince so who cares what i do" *couples episodes later* "WELL ACTUALLY-" (rip my boy eric tho, gone too soon :/)). i just didn't like how fast-paced it was bc it genuinely felt like this all happened in 3 days, my gays could NOT catch a break smh!! also the songs the choir sung were kinda weird choices JDSNGDD anyway wille and simon ruling sweden as gay kings when<3

Okay. I don't think I got the first one quite right and it's several quotes but shh, tsoa is one of my favourite books and the lines in it are *chef's kiss*. Miller wrote an incredible book and it's one of maybe 3 that have made me cry like a little shit. God.

I love the first ones because they're just so goddamn romantic but the last quote?? The last quote ruins me. Everytime I read it I just started laughing a bit hysterically because I knew.

This one is so Good. The delivery, the characters, the way you feel kind of bad for them. Just, the resignation in his voice, when he says it. He's so obviously hurting and he does want revenge. He does. But there's also no point now, when that other half is gone.

I feel like it's one of those quotes that you can kind of get even without context? But context makes it better. I also think I got it right, I usually dislike the phrasing on the second half and tend to change it. But now I made an effort to remember it right lmao

Ha. I love these quotes. The "Mo Weiyu! You fucker" quote was the first one I wrote down while reading 2ha. I don't think the first part and "how can you say he didn't save you" are said in the same sentence, but they're connected.

I had such complicated emotions during that scene. I was so fucking happy that Mo Ran finally got a "slap to the face" because I still couldn't stand him back then. It was also just fun that he got cursed out. And when he realises what actually happened? *chef's kiss*

The second quote is very romantic imo. I love both when lovers die together in media and when the dying one asks the other to live. It's so mean but you also understand why they do it. It's very similar to the ending scene of Hamlet before the "goodnight, sweet prince." Hamlet asks Horatio to live, I don't remember the actual phrasing but it's smth like "if you ever cared for me, live" and it's so cruel, Hamlet you shit.

Hello I love characters who walk around spouting poetry that barely makes any sense for the scene they're in. Both the ff7 ones and the dmc5 quote are exactly that, so I put them together. It's Good. I also spout random lines of poetry sometimes. Kudos to "i have no name" because it actually leads into him telling them his name, so it's actually relevant for the scene.

Anyway, some of the loveless quotes are pretty neat out of context, there's also that one like "the arrow has left the bow of the goddess, smth smth smth", I remember liking that one but I don't remember all of it. Also, honorable mention: that cutscene where the Firsts fight and Seph knows exactly what page/act/etc the loveless quote is from. I love that scene so much. It does live in my head, rent-free.

I think that's, more than enough. I could go on. I didn't even touch classic lit, which I am also very into.
