In a new study, researchers at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and partners have described the only known member of the palm family (Arecaceae) to flower and fruit almost entirely underground. Owing to this unusual characteristic, the scientists have named the species Pinanga subterranea, with its species name derived from the Latin word for underground. The work was published in the journal PALMS with added commentary in Plants, People, Planet. Native to the tropical island of Borneo in Southeast Asia, the plant is well-known to locals who like to snack on its bright-red fruit—a sweet and juicy delicacy consumed in some parts of the island. However, until now, the plant has remained unnoticed by scientists who, to date, have described around 300 different species of palm on the island. Pinanga subterranea joins more than 2,500 species of palm known to science, up to half of which may be threatened with extinction. According to the international team of researchers, P. subterranea can be found scattered across the primary rainforests of western Borneo, crossing state lines from Sarawak in Malaysia to Kalimantan in Indonesia. Prior to its scientific description, the plant was known in at least three Bornean languages under the names Pinang Tanah, Pinang Pipit, Muring Pelandok, and Tudong Pelandok.

hey!! I saw your pride meiker, so cute!! Just curious, I want to make a magical girl meiker with some hijab options, is there any specific hijaboptions you'd like to see in dress up games?

Hi! Thank you so much for reaching out! I generally love any and all hijab options in games, though obviously I've got some favorites.

I'm partial to face-framing scarves which are draped over the back of the head with one flowy piece pinned next to the face. It's a style that I included in my pride maker, but here's another reference image for that:

There's also a style called tudong/tudung in Indonesian. I'm not too familiar with it, but I sometimes see it in photos and think it looks so good. It has a way of draping the headscarf in a very prominent arch over the forehead, sometimes using a sown-in curved visor to achieve the look. This product video shows the style beginning at second 12. (It also shows the non-rectangular shape of the scarf, in case that's a useful drawing reference.)

Also, I think it's really great when games include a niqab option (face-veil). There's so many niqabis out there but they get so little representation.

Then there's also the very simple style of just taking a scarf, placing it on your head, and flipping one side over your shoulder. Like my profile pic. It's a timeless classic.

I'd also advice to include at least one "hijab friendly" outfit in your game, meaning one outfit with arms and legs covered. Hijab is more than just the scarf, it also includes covering the rest of the body, though each hijabi decides for themselves how much is right for them. (For example, some show a bit of hair/neck/short sleeves/etc., while other's opt to wear a burqa or niqab.)

Buddhism in Thailand

Following the 3rd Buddhist Council in the 3rd century BC, King Ashoka sent two Buddhist monks named Sona and Uttara as Buddhist missionaries to Suvarnabhumi (Golden Land), which is said to have included Thailand, who established the Theravada tradition of Buddhism.

Mahayana Buddhism was introduced to Thailand around the 6th century by Buddhist monks from India and around the 11th century the Northern Thailand in particular was influenced by what was known as Burma (Pagan)

Buddhism due to the region's closeness to Burma.

Following a decline in Theravada Buddhism, it was reintroduced in the 13th century by Thai Buddhist monks who had studied in Sri Lanka and returned to Thailand accompanied by some Sri Lankan monks. So, it appears that Buddhism in different forms reached Thailand at four different periods namely,

Theravada Buddhism

Mahayana Buddhism

Burma (Pagan) Buddhism

Sri Lankan (Lankavamsa) Buddhism

Buddhism continues to be the state religion in Thailand and by constitution the king of Thailand has to be a Buddhist and Upholder of Buddhism. At present around 94% of the population are said to be followers of Theravada Buddhism with around 32,000 Buddhist monasteries. A minority of Buddhists in Thailand are Mahayana practitioners who are mostly Buddhists of Chinese origin. The forest tradition of Theravada Buddhism in which the monks follow the strict code of discipline for the monks and also undertake spells of wandering on foot called "Tudong" has become popular both within and outside Thailand.

RARE Pra Pang Pathommatessana, Lang Pra Sivali, Tudong  Sathan Namtok Ka Ang, Nua Pong. A Buddha amulet with figure of Buddha giving his first sermon to Panjavaki (five ascetics who had been Buddha’s former companions: Kondañña, Assaji, Bhaddiya, Vappa, and Mahānāma.) in the Deer Park at Sarnath. In the back is with a bas-relief of a Pra Sivali Arahant on his pilgrimage, and a formula of cabalistic writings (read more), and Thai text says “Tudong Sathan Ka Ang”. Made from many types of holy powder blended with holy water, plaster cement.Made by Pra Archan Jamrat, the previous abbot of Tudong  Sathan Namtok Ka Ang Buddhist Sanctuary (today Wat Sri Ka Ang), Ka Ang Water Fall, Nakhon Nayok Province in BE 2517 (CE 1974). Buddha’s first sermon, the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, the Setting in Motion of the Wheel of the Dhamma Sutta or Promulgation of the Law Sutta) is a Buddhist scripture that is considered by Buddhists to be a record of the first sermon given by Gautama Buddha, the Sermon in the Deer Park at Sarnath. The main topic of this sutta is the Four Noble Truths, which refer to and express the basic orientation of Buddhism in a formulaic expression. This sutta also refers to the Buddhist concepts of the Middle Way, impermanence, and dependent origination. Modern Thai depiction of the Sermon in the Deer Park at Sarnath, according to Buddhist tradition, the Buddha delivered this discourse on the day of Asalha Puja, in the month of Ashadha, in a deer sanctuary in Isipatana. Pra Sīvalī

Pra Sīvalī is a Buddhist Arahant widely venerated among Theravada Buddhists. He is the guardian saint of travel and is believed to ward off misfortune at home, such as fire or theft. His veneration predates the introduction of Theravada Buddhism into present-day Myanmar (Burma). Shin Thiwali is typically depicted standing upright and carrying a walking staff, an alms bowl and prayer beads.Born to Queen Suppavasa, Shin Thiwali is believed to have remained in his mother’s womb for seven years because of past karma.After a week in labor, Sīvalī’s mother gave birth to a precocious boy who could immediately speak. Thereafter, Buddha’s chief disciple Sariputra admitted Sīvalī into the Sangha. The Burmese believe that he is still living, that he can be invoked to come by a special incantation and that his mere invisible presence will bring them prosperity and good fortune.

Pra Archan Man Phurithatto

Pra Archan Mun Bhuridatta Thera was a Thai bhikkhu from Isan region who is credited, along with his mentor, Pra Archan Sao Kantasīlo, with establishing the Thai Forest Tradition or “Kammaṭṭhāna tradition” that subsequently spread throughout Thailand and to several countries abroad.

Biography

Pra Archan Mun was born in Baan Kham Bong, a farming village in Ubon Ratchathani Province, Isan.

Ordained as a monk in 1893, he spent the remainder of his life wandering through Thailand, Burma, and Laos, dwelling for the most part in the forest, engaged in the practice of meditation. He attracted an enormous following of students and, together with his teacher, Sao Kantasīlo (1861–1941) established the Thai Forest Tradition (the kammaṭṭhāna tradition) that subsequently spread throughout Thailand and to several countries abroad. He died at Wat Suddhavasa, Sakon Nakhon Province.

Forest meditation

Pra Archan Mun’s mode of practice was solitary and strict. He followed the vinaya (monastic discipline) faithfully, and also observed many of what are known as the 13 classic dhutanga (ascetic) practices, such as living off alms food, wearing robes made of cast-off rags, dwelling in the forest and eating only one meal a day. Monks following this tradition are known as thudong, the Thai pronunciation of this Pali word.

Searching out secluded places in the wilds of Thailand and Laos, he avoided the responsibilities of settled monastic life and spent long hours of the day and night in meditation. In spite of his reclusive nature, he attracted a large following of students willing to put up with the hardships of forest life in order to study with him.
