Today’s turkey of the day is Marshmallow! This delightful lady was saved by @northbayanimalservices from a horrendous hoarding case last November. Starving and never having lived outside, it took some time for her to trust humans and get comfortable in her sanctuary home here at @blackberrycreek Now, nearly a year later, she is thriving thanks to all of you who make our work possible. She has top notch veterinary care, a close family of chickens, humans, and other turkeys, a soft, warm, predator proof bed, and access to daily food, love, and sunshine, three basic needs she didn’t have met at the start of her life. The chickens and turkeys are ten months old. I'm not sure if it's turkey mating season or something, but we just realized that Georgie is actually George. He thinks he's protecting his flock, but he doesn't know there's possibly critters that look like ferrets around. Unlike with the fox, we don't know if that critter is around. They can get in the fenced in area. I'm hoping it's possible to set traps around rather than having to bribe king George every night to get in the coop. Today’s turkey of the day is Snowball! Snowball was rescued in November of 2018 from a rural Utah slaughterhouse along with 99 other turkeys. She was destined to be killed, like millions of other turkeys, at only 5-6 months old so humans could eat her flesh for Thanksgiving, but thankfully she was saved by the kindness of activists who spoke up for her. Snowball had never gotten to be outside, see the sky, or feel grass beneath her feet. She is now one of our oldest turkeys at Blackberry Creek (along with her sister, Sugar Plum who came from the same rescue), and at 4.5 years old they’ve gotten to experience much more of life than the 46 million turkeys killed for a holiday meal each year in the US alone. Snowball is snuggly, loving, gentle, and a beautiful testament to how resilient these amazing, sentient beings can be. She loves hugs, watermelon, blueberries, and relaxing in the shade under her sail shade in the summer months. When you symbolically “adopt” Snowball this Thanksgiving, your sponsorship goes not only toward her care, but the care of all turkeys here at Blackberry Creek. It helps us fund rescue expenses, veterinary care, nutritious food, soft bedding (domestic turkeys need deep bedding to help their feet support their enormous bodies), medication, and daily care. The Turkeys. The older, larger Turkey is a female that adopted the three poults when they were younger. They each are from different females and for a while they closely followed their moms around the farm not spending much time together. They were each left to fend for themselves and the three females who left them went on to get broody again, lay more eggs with plans of starting over. Another female took the young turkeys in so to speak, they began following her and still do. In the video they are near the heap vines eating the seeds off the tops of tall grass. Golden Comet Sex-Link. GREAT CHICKENS FOR THE BACKYARD BEGINNER.🐔❤️🧑‍🌾 1)Starter Birds.  —you want to get into the joy of chickens, but raising delicate newborns might be too much —you can get these well-raised adolescent chickens from a trusted source, local or online. —Pullet is a female who has not yet begun to lay eggs.  —Cockerel is a rooster who has not sexually matured (nor has his hackles and spurs) 2) Golden Comet Sex-Link Breed. —this breed is unique because you can identify the gender of the chicks day one 😲! This way you can get the exact male/female ratio you need, which is more critical with fewer birds and smaller space (or a place that bans owning roosters) —the females chicks are gold/red —the males are your prototypical solid cream-white colored chick.  I BET YOU CAN GUESS WHICH IS THE PULLET (female) AND WHICH IS THE COCKEREL (male)!! 😃👍 ~~Our first four chickens ever were both Starter Birds & Golden Comet Sex-Link.
