ok so i cant find the post that triggered this but it was something about complaining about the wave of cannibalism/dog/tangerine imagery in modern poetry on tumblr and how 'not everyone can relate to that'
while that may be true, and this theme of imagery is popular now to the point of oversaturation (which i actually just kind of think is poetry in and of itself (metaphors about consuming turning into overconsumption? i love it)) i also think its unfair and shows a lack of understanding to society and to the meaning of the metaphors themselves.
(an analysis of sorts under cut)
in a generation of consumption, where we are no longer regarding media casually but consuming it constantly (tiktok, shows no longer having spaced out emissions, never having to wait for a dopamine fix really etc) is it not incredibly in keeping with the times that we would then turn to a metaphor of complete consumption as love? we love our media, we spend our days consuming it, therefore that being translated into cannibalism for the ones you love, consuming them with the same gusto, isn't as far a reach as it is made out to be. also the idea of all of us, the bad parts, the parts we keep hidden, being devoured as lovingly as the parts we share, speaks to a generation of anxious children who have been trained to perfect a persona that is palatable to a wide audience (see, generation of social media)
following that, the fruit metaphor, which i will admit, can be annoying - the constant tangerines, i get it, its overdone (but again see beginning of the post, poetry in and of itself) but the act of peeling away your layers, your facade that is so intrinsic to todays society of social media where your face on the screen is generally not the same face you wear on a sunday morning, to show your mushy insides, dividing them up and sharing them with the ones you love is inherently relatable. a culture of separated parts of self, the idea that there is a person you are online, at work, with certain friends and a different person with others etc, personas that have been watered down, the idea of giving them over to be consumed with the seeds still in, juice on the edge of too sweet, is cathartic. we dont feel we have the luxury to be our authentic selves for the most part, so the tangerine metaphor is an easy way to both express these ideas, and understand them.
and finally, the dog motif, which i think is the most nuanced of these metaphors - the idea that we are either a man or a dog, that we are the hand that feeds or the hand that takes, gives us a place to explore our humanity and what it means to be human- is all that a man is good for is to give? is all that a dog is good for is to take? (i could go on but this is getting to be too long now) calls back to a lot of older imagery, not to far a step from imagery of waves, the pull of the tide - who is the moon, who is the ocean? is it a steady rise and fall, or is it a raging storm? vs is it a symbiotic relationship, or do we bite the hand that feeds? is the hand that feeds also the hand that hurts? i believe there is so many different ideas to explore within this metaphor, and it is again an easy to digest way of presenting ideas, just like the waves once were.
also i just think the whole criticism really calls back to an age of keeping poetry inaccessible and exclusive. like, these young kids who probably dont have any experience of poetry outside of what is taught in school, are exploring in their own way, finding something easily accessible and easily understood, and are using it as a stepping stone to engage with poetry. this is great!! they may start off with richard silken, nina lacour, maggie nelson, but may go on to engaging with maya angelou, naomi shihab nye, paul tran, and even have a better appreciation for the old canon (eliot, cummings, keats, etc). we had this with rupi kaur guys!!! we need to encourage them to explore, not shun them for it!!
anyway tldr, cannibalism/fruit/dogs are incredibly relatable topics and poetry is for everyone. <3

I’ve been seeing some takes in our side of the fandom, and while I do agree with some points...
I don’t think it’s healthy to deny or not want to acknowledge the bad things that your fave has done. I do think that Billy’s actions could have been racially motivated, and that he could have improved himself had he survived and gotten a good support system. In that same vein it would be valid for someone like Lucas to not forgive him at all even if he ended up giving him a second chance to show how he could change. It’s just that I keep seeing people on this side trying to say that Billy was absolutely alright in threatening Lucas, but let’s not deny the way it most probably felt for Lucas as a Black boy to get threatened and pretty physically by a white teen. This obviously can be taken as racist, even if for any reason Billy did not mean it that way or Dacre did his best to tone him down against the Duffers’ initial wishes.
Like guys... on both sides. Whether you love Billy or hate him, it’s undeniable to me that people on both sides with extreme opinions try to portray him as someone he’s not, if only to uplift their own fave (whether it’s a fan trying to erase Billy’s actions or an anti trying to demonize him by saying he’s done worse things than, say, Brenner for example).
I think it’d just be a healthier experience to admit that your fave has done bad things and that you’re still going to stan him, and if people are uncomfortable with it they can just block you or filter that character’s name, without receiving death threats or rape threats or racial slurs thrown your way for liking that character.
Like this:
“Yes, Billy did something racially motivated and I don’t condone that part of him but I’ll still like his character for X other reasons.”
“Yes, Steve was homophobic and classist and said something slut-shaming and I don’t condone that part of him but I’ll still like his character for X other reasons.”
“Yes, Jonathan was a creep who took pictures of people in a private environment and I don’t condone that part of him but I’ll still like his character for X other reasons.”
“Yes, Nancy had classist and ableist behaviors and I don’t condone that part of her but I’ll still like her character for X other reasons.”
“Yes, Mike said something racist/microagressive and I don’t condone that part of him but I’ll still like his character for X other reasons.”
Etc. etc....
On another topic, I feel like policing people for liking a fictional character or even saying that liking that character means you equate yourself to them is bogus at least, and dangerous at worst. If you’re a Billy anti, I have to say and I can’t believe that I have to make it clear, but it’s obvious that liking Billy doesn’t automatically make you a racist. (This is /light-hearted and not a jab but do you think a racist person would take the time to host something like HarringroveForBLM, HarringroveForPalestine, etc. etc.?)
Here are some examples of the aforementioned point: I used to be in the Resident Evil fandom and there are many people there who stan and even woobify characters such as, say, Albert Wesker, who is one of the most recognizable exponents of eugenics in fiction. I don’t see anyone batting an eye or making callout post at his fans and I won’t either, because he’s a fictional character after all, and liking him obviously doesn’t mean that you’re going to be interested in eugenics. Same with characters like Patrick Bateman, some of whose many crimes are rape and cannibalism. Same with many other characters. So it’s a little bit weird to me that all that attention and call-out behavior goes to one specific character such as Billy Hargrove.
So why don’t we all just do our own thing while recognizing the history that compounds a character? Let’s recognize that you can acknowledge a character’s flaws without equating a fan of that character to that character’s flaws.
(This is my limited point of view as a white latino. Please be civil in the comments without regard to what side of the fandom you’re coming from🙏 I encourage Billy antis to give their opinions but please be civil and no fighting🙏)

"So."
There's a creaking of springs as the man leans back in his chair, placing his soiled sneakers up on the meeting room table as if he owned the place; which- as far as he was concerned- wasn't actually too far from the truth.
"The basic principle's this. The soda machines are utterly fucked- have been for weeks, actually, I kept bringing it up to those guys in the one hundreds and they always ignored me- and as far as I can tell, there's no canteen of any sort in here. There's also no exit.
So, presuming you aren't hallucinating me and I'm not hallucinating you, of course, we maay have to fight to the death. Winner, uh, eats the loser, I suppose?"
It might've even sounded a more humerous suggestion (or at the very least, a more collected one) had this not come straight from the mouth of a man positively dripping with another's blood.
That was hardly to the point of hyperbole, too- it had sunk deep into the creases of his shoes and smeared itself across the table and collected itself in the ends of his hair and splattered across his face and was dripping from the pencil sharpener he was using to gesture with and was drying under his nails- even his favourite hoodie, his nice, comfortable black one his husband had gotten for him (as a nothing less than a gift to congratulate him for getting this job, goddammit!) now bore some rather unpleasant brownish stains across its hems.
Employee #432, of course, was utterly nonplussed by it all.
Not by the blood, not by the cause of the blood, not even the fact this was rather literally the first words with which he had ever greeted this stranger. As far as he saw it, the world would reset itself soon.
That would eradicate most-if not all of these problems. And if not, then it gave him a chance of hope.
Either way, he won. Right?

I love cannibalism. Thinking abt the BOLAS??!?!?@ team inviting the other teams over for a dinner. Chunks of meat and the few vegetables they could scrounge up. The other teams are like. Damn wtf where did you get this much meat. And they just deflect and it's great. Eventually the other teams do find out they're eating human* meat. Very fun times

allow me to speak a bit about religious symbolism in the society of the snow / la sociedad de la nieve.
tw: cannibalism mentioned
numa is morally conflicted about cannibalism especially because of his catholic religion. and the scene where he finally succumbs and eats a small piece of flesh is almost religious in nature how he clasps his hands and closes his eyes.
it reminds me of the communion, how you eat the body of christ in its bread form and in this case he’s literally eating a body (in about the same amount as a communion wafer) of someone who sacrificed themself by dying, especially after they talked about giving permission to be eaten.
this may be an obvious thing, but it was just some hard hitting symbolism that i really enjoyed from the film.

anyways. concept for a vulture 2099 redesign w/ some extra notes under the cut
- where it has not been Replaced w/ artificial feathers, he has the plumage of a bleeding heart dove!
- chronically plucks out his nonessential + downy feathers until they stop growing back bcuz of Stress And Malnourishment, so he's rocking that uncooked chicken look
- descendant of the 20th century X-Men's Warren Worthington III (although he only Knows that he “comes from [a family of] angels,”)
- originally would've just been a regular carrier for the x-gene, but got Snatched off the streets at a young age and subjected to many years' worth of Deranged Experiments™ that caused him to mutate before eventually breaking free.
- doesn't consider his scavenging of bodies to be Wrong. he just genuinely doesn't. this version doesn't just Eat Them, y'see, y'see-- now, he and his loyal Carrion Birds are just about the only free method of body disposal available, Downtown. the streets have never been cleaner, the soil never richer, the meals never heartier than since he showed up! it does not matter what the person wanted in life. their resources are His now.
- ...those folk who Know may not like what he does with the bodies, after death, but Vulture's crew is well-reputed for their timeliness, and their efficiency, and their overwhelming distaste for the Public Eye, which has earned them a surprising amount of favor with the people, so... whatta ya gonna do, right?
- like. yeah, he's leading some freaky new denomination of concerningly-homophagous Christianity(?), but. hey! at least he's not Alchemax.
- spider-man has his shocking WORK cut out for him dealing w/ this creep, lol.

How I look at my friends after explaining in depth how I would harvest their lifeless body for resources to ensure I have the most optimal chance of survival in a zombie apocalypse situation and why I would use the corpse differently in a deserted island situation, lost in the forest, and icy Tundra. Most involve cannibalism
[image ID: a shitty drawing of a character with black hair, light skin and a grey outfit blushing and looking up at the viewer. The perspective is exaggerated for comedic effect to the point the body is miniscule and the eyes take up most of the face. End ID]

MAJOR Cannibalism TW
The journey across the Helcaraxe took far longer than the elves expected it to. They had nowhere near enough food, and even the elves need to eat. So they did what they had to do.
Fingolfin did what he had to do because he was stubborn.
Fingon does what he must because he has to survive long enough to see Maedhros again.
Turgon does what he must because he will not let his daughter be orphaned.
Galadriel does what she must because she still needs to punch Feanor in the face.
Argon and Elenwe did not live long enough to need another food source.
Glorfindel, half frozen to death himself from repeatedly diving into the frigid waters to rescue others, didn't even have the capacity to choose whether or not to take the actions he took until they had already begun, and once you start, you don't stop until there's a better option.
When it is finished, they will never speak of it again.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Feanor's army is left without food a great many times.
Before the sun's first rise and set, the Feanorians have created a way to determine who lives and dies in times of starvation, and they too refuse to speak of what happened to their dead.
They refuse because Maedhros, for all his protest of killing other elves, was the first to slit the throat of the elf chosen to die.
They refuse because not even Maglor can bring himself to sing of this, and Maglor could sing of his own family dying.
They refuse because Caranthir, for all his brutality and cruelty, believes that they are wrong.
But most importantly, they refuse because the first elf they ate was Amrod.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The second most important time the Feanorian army is left starving is in F.A 548. This is the event with the most guilt around it.
Survivor's guilt from Elrond, because for all intents and purposes, the stolen twins should have been the first to die.
Inequality guilt from Elros and Erestor, because they knew that they weren't going to be harmed and they did not step in to suggest something better.
Existential guilt from Maglor, because he cannot bring himself to think that this is their fault.
And the overwhelming, self-loathing guilt of Maedhros, because at the end of the long, bloody day, he knows he should have done something to stop this. To make sure two sixteen year old half-elves didn't have to choose between starving and sinning. To make sure his brother didn't have to make that decision for them. He should have done anything.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By the late Third Age, the few elves who know all of what happened are together in a city. Odd behaviors surround them like shrouds, concealing a much darker past. The people of Imladris have learned not to try to pull back these shrouds.
They don't ask questions when the mere sight of a red drink forces Erestor to hide in his chambers and cry.
They don't ask questions when the mere sight of meat has a good chance of making sure Glorfindel won't be able to keep anything down for days.
They don't ask questions when a particular word or phrase has Elrond refusing any food altogether for days.
They don't question, because they don't want the answer. They don't want to know what can break a man like Erestor, who acts like a glacier made of intelligence. They don't want to know what makes a Balrog slayer feel sick. They don't want to know what manages to drive a perfect person like their lord to the brink of complete collapse.

so i’ve recently became more proship and have been reading darker fiction without lying to myself about why. some of it? kinda hot. i’d like to also note that i can’t write dark smut at all. i’ve written exactly two dark fics, one was cannibalism eternal hunger horror which i never finished bcs i orphaned every work on that ao3 act, the other was a non-con fic focused on the trauma and unhappy ending, it was not an erotica thing at all. i find it a little amusing because yeah i’ll read the most heinous smut known to man twice over but writing it??? i’m incapable it’s vanilla tender love-so-strong-our-souls-are-holding-hands type fics.

I don’t know the story you are referring to, but I would definitely read that. Finally, material that fits them. Also, I wanted to say, stop complaining. You are an adult. You whining about something that you don’t like, and saying they don’t act that way. You haven’t been focusing on who they are. They are demons! Beel and the rest of the brothers eat humans. It has been implied many times. They don’t have the same hang ups you, and others like you have. They’ll do many things that in human society would be looked down upon. You need to grow up, at your big ole age of 25 and move on. You aren’t a child anymore. Obey me had changed so much and is watered down from what it used to be, because of people like you. You get offended over anything you don’t agree on, but then expect others to accommodate you. Yet, you are hypocritical, because you judge way to much, especially about things that you don’t like. You forget that there are others who do enjoy that content, and will support it. Keep complaining, there are tons of people on here who will continue to make these type of stories, and dark content. It’s not gonna stop just because you are uncomfortable. Stop bullying people into thinking like you, we all have our own interests.
First of all I'm not sure you got the full point of my post. I'm not just complaining about the type of content it was but the lack of appropriate tags. Dark blogs are fine, I've followed a couple because of slashers. My problem is when they don't use tags or use the wrong ones.
Second I'm fully aware that the boys are demons. I have a couple of personal headcanons about humans being a delicacy in the Devildom.
Third I know people like that shit (not derogatory). I saw the amount of notes it had, didn't look at them but I'm sure most were likes. I have zero issues with people liking it. I have an issue with the lack of tags.
Fourth and finally I'll tell you what I saw. It was a post about MC/reader walking in on Beel, who is canonically attached to his brothers and never does anything bad to them and tries not to for the most part, eating MC's and his brother's, never specified which, baby.
So tell me anon, am I really fully in the wrong for being upset at the gross lack of tags on a post like that? I have some good examples of a few tags that person could have used so I and others won't have to see their shit, again I'm not being derogatory this time.

RIP Giovanni Lombardo Radice (23.9.1954 - 27.4.2023)
"It took some time, and a lot of stress, to learn to not be in character twelve hours a day on set. At the very beginning, when I was very young, I was totally in character from beginning to end. With the long times you have on set, that was exhausting. I slowly learned how to get in and out of character. That is not always easy, it takes time, it depends on what character you are playing. Some characters need a larger concentration, some are easier to switch on and off. That is the main difference with theatre."
