Seiiki!!Okamura Homare (23.11.29)
Hello
I'm Okamura Homare 🌼
Thank you very much for your likes and comments ⸜❤︎⸝‍
All of your warm comments are my motivation ´`*
┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈
Yokohama Arena 2nd Day!!
『Morning Musume。'23 Concert Tour Autumn 「Neverending Shine Show 〜Seiiki〜」 Fukumura Mizuki Graduation Special』
To everyone who cheered us on、thank you very much!!
I still want Fukumura-san to be with us、I want to be Morning Musume。with all 14 members、but this day finally arrived。
Ever since Fukumura-san announced her graduation、we've all been making sure to treasure each and every day、but the time has just flown by。
The venue was filled with pink lights and Mizuki calls、and Fukumura-san looked super beautiful in her almost wedding dress style white and pink gradation dress with a long veil。
I'm really sad that my beloved Fukumura-san has graduated。
She always envelops us in kindness and love and I really love her。
That will absolutely never change。
She once told me、if she had been in the same class as Homare we'd have definitely been best friends、which made me so happy〜
We'll hang out together even now that she's graduated!!
We promised to go to a protein café!!
With Fukumura-san and Yokoyama-san the 3 of us sang 「Aki Urara」
The lyrics made me feel like Homare has grown up a bit、and being able to sing this song together as a unit at the end of our tour will be a memory I'll treasure for the rest of my life。
I delivered my message to her yesterday
So I didn't do it today、but if I'd done it today I know I would have just cried too much to talk so I think it's for the best that I did it yesterday。
I was tearing up in the final song but I wanted to send her off with a smile!
Starting tomorrow we'll have 13 members with Ikuta-san as our leader、and Ishida-san and Oda-san as our sub leaders。
I hope you're looking forward to it!!
Even though you're no longer our leader、I hope you keep watching over us as our OG senpai!
Now that Fukumura-san has graduated、I hope she sees us looking cool、and is happy with the future of Morning Musume。、so us members will come together and keep working hard。
I hope all of our fans also continue to cheer us on。
Today is Good Fuku Day、and Good Tsunku♂-san day、and also、Good Meat Day、so I'll post some PhotogeNiku another time。(Although I've been saying that for months now。)

I woke up with bad brain tooday, and remembered the D4DJ Vanguard collab and like I had to think about what the other characters would use. When the collab happened I was like "Ugh woulda preferred the characters using clans over nations, there's so many more ride lines to use."
But now there's a lotta ride lines in the new format so yay! I get to assign most of the girls cool vanguards!
I'll put 'em under a a read more in case people don't wanna hear someone be very normal about a silly card game!
Miyu: Already has Loronerol from the collab.
Haruna: Clarissa
Aoi: Bastion, since her card is her as uuuuh, Fort?
Shinobu: Nirvana, her outfit was based on one of the Blaze Maidens in Nirvana's ride deck.
Now for the ones who didn't get anything from the collab but were in the collab:
Maho: I gave her Lianorn as a reference to Kagamin playing Urara in WillDress, who uses Lianorn.
Miiko: Alestiel. She'd suit Miyu way more, but I think Miiko would work too.
Kurumi: Feltyrosa. I am a Felty enjoyer, I cannot help it, she's cool, buff her. Anyway, Kurumi looks liked she'd love board manipulation and being silly about it.
And the rest:
Kyoko: Zorga. This is so not big brain of me, but her VA plays Am in Vanguard G (Also Suiko in the original my beloved entity), who used Granblue, and Zorga is like, the closest thing to Granblue in D. Yes I like making characters have boss units based on if their VA was in VG.
lol side note put an Angel Feather boss in Bushi, please, then I can make Kyoko use it.
Yuka: Dragonic Overlord. Since Overlord can attack more than once, I think it'd suit Yuka who totallly has no limit when it comes to working out.
Esora: Welstra. Easiest option. Welstra can use Product cards to get a power boost and other silly effects like making a huge ass ship to blast shit, Esora would so do that for Peaky.
Saki: Seraph Snow. Idk I always imagined Saki using a Vanguard deck like Link Joker to lock down opponents. Seraph Snow scratches that itch.
Ibuki: Bavsargra. BEST GIRL BAV. Bav is basically a shrine maiden possessed by a god. I think she suits Ibuki, since her family do operate a shrine. Plus Bav has a lil guy (Trickmon) and Ibuki has a lil guy (cat).
Towa: Michu. I think Michu's the cutest ride line in Lyrical. She kinda gives off Towa energy tbh.
Noa: Fortia. Fortia has this skill to make friends with units she calls. The cards that Fortia works with are also cute. Lyrical Monastario is just the cute nation. Noa would thrive.
Rika: Bruce. I think a rush down, jump right in and attack is Rika. Plus she's probably played whatever sport the Diabolos boys play is inspired by.
Marika: Kyouka. Idk how to explain why, but Kyouka just feels right for her?
Saori: Eva. She plays seriously, she knows what's meta. Probably owns most meta decks, but Eva would be my choice based on style.
Dalia: This is literally the only reason I think about this collab a lot. LUQUIER, MY BELOVED. Luquier is from back when Vanguard had clans in the "standard" format, and her clan, Pale Moon, is a troupe of circus performers who can totally assinate people. Luquier can control dragons with her gaze, and Dalia scares people with hers! Both could kill someone but also slay on stage.
Tsubaki: Phantom Blaster Overlord/ Phantom Blaster Dragon. Aesthetically, Tsubaki with PBO just feels right like yes that is the main vocalist of Rondo Tsubaki Aoyagi and her massive abyss dragon, pay no mind.
Nagisa: Vermillion. "In my day, we had to get 4 damage to use Limit Break skills" ~ idk Nagisa probably. She just feels like a person who'd have a Narukami boss.
Hiiro: Another one that just feels so right; Hexaorb Magus. Hiiro's interest in fortune telling just works so well with how Hexaorb plays. I could imagine her just smiling so casually as she slays with knowing exactly what card is gonna be drawn.
Michiru: Avantgarda (I think that's how you spell it). Michiru just kinda feels like she'd want a mecha. I want that for her.
Lumina: Solrairon. It's kinda like Hexaorb, but you guess what card is on top? I just feel like that would suit Lumina, being able to call out the exact card without second guessing.
Hayate: Flagburg Dragon, this is a joke pick like I so think Hayate would see the burger boat dragon and go "lol I want that."
Kokoa: Minerva. It got harder the more I did and by the time I got to Unichord, my brain broke. Kokoa gets a goddess as she deserves tho.
Neo: Orfist. It gives massive villain vibes.
Sophia: Youthberk. She'd also play to win like Saori, but Sophia put way more cash in by having Youthberk. I think he works well considering her relies on new forms of himself, and Sophia obviously has her cool mode on stage.
Elsie: Almajestar. Elsie gives off lowkey Sophie Belle (the character in WillDress who uses this deck) energy, where she gets a lil unhinged and just fucks shit up with the Almajestars. Would she call someone a dog? Yes.
Weronika: Gravidia. Weronika would sooooo be the type to be like "In this card game I want to throw meteors at someone".
Rei: Tamayura. Considering Rei's traditional background, I think she'd pick the cute Yokai gal.
Rinku: Nirvana Jheva. It's different to what Shinobu would have, Shinobu has OverDress Nirvana, but Jheva is X-overdress. Literally a protag card.
Muni: Haseritt is a bunny girl I think? Muni would.
Anyway thank you for coming to my ted talk about a card game I hyperfixate on. IF NUMBAH ONE VANGUARD SEASON WOOOOOOOO

BL Metamorphosis, Volume 5 by Kaori Tsurutani
(Warning: Spoilers)
The final volume. There was so much plot potential with this story, but the author stayed true to her storytelling style until the very end, no big dramas, last minute success stories, friends to lover romances, no tearful deaths. It remains a story of everyday life, not giving us the big Hollywood plots but instead those small life moments that we didn’t know we wanted to read about.
As Ichinoi and Urara make their individual ways to the book signing of their beloved favourite BL author, suddenly Urara’s friend, Tsumugu needs her as emotional support as he makes his way to say goodbye to his ex-girlfriend, only for a moment is Urara torn between being on time to the signing and helping her friend, she knows which is more important. It’s made even more poignant when it turns out that the author wanted to compliment Urara on her amateur manga.
As for Ichinoi she realizes that she wants to be closer to her daughter, and her daughter realizes her mother is getting on in years and needs company, Ichinoi moving overseas to be with her daughter is both a safe, sensible thing to do and also a daring thing to do, it’s a whole new adventure adapting to a new country and settling into someone else’s home after you’ve experience independence for the majority of your life.
My eyes just started welling up with tears, BL Metamorphosis is very nuanced, and there’s a few moments throughout the series that I didn’t mentioned in my reviews because they don’t really mean much to me now, but I know that on a second and third reading years from now, I’ll pick up something new from this wonderful series.

Anime i’ve Watched
That begin with a Y!
Yep this is how i’m going to bring over all the anime and manga i’ve watched and posted about on the old blog. It’s not so detailed but it will have to do. Anything new I watch or read from this point on will have their own posts.
Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. (My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU):
Genres: Slice of Life, Comedy, Drama, Romance, School
Tumblr media
Synopsis: Hachiman Hikigaya is an apathetic high school student with narcissistic and semi-nihilistic tendencies. He firmly believes that joyful youth is nothing but a farce, and everyone who says otherwise is just lying to themselves. In a novel punishment for writing an essay mocking modern social relationships, Hachiman's teacher forces him to join the Volunteer Service Club, a club that aims to extend a helping hand to any student who seeks their support in achieving their goals. With the only other club member being the beautiful ice queen Yukino Yukinoshita, Hachiman finds himself on the front line of other people's problems—a place he never dreamed he would be. As Hachiman and Yukino use their wits to solve many students' problems, will Hachiman's rotten view of society prove to be a hindrance or a tool he can use to his advantage? [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Tumblr media
My Rating: 9/10
Finished airing in 2013 with a total of 13 episodes.
My Thoughts: Apparently I really enjoyed this series when I originally watched it. That being said, I recently tried to start the third season and called it quits about half an episode in because it just wasn’t doing anything for me and I found Hachiman questionable. I have no idea what you should take from this comment.
Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. Zoku (My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU TOO!):
Genres: Romance, Comedy, Drama, Slice of life, school
Tumblr media
Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. Zoku picks up immediately after the events of the first season, continuing the adventures of the Volunteer Service Club—the dispassionate Hachiman Hikigaya, the cheerful Yui Yuigahama, and the competitive Yukino Yukinoshita—as it dedicates itself to helping any student with issues that they may face. With the rift among his own group widening, Hachiman begins to realize that his knack for quickly getting to the root of other people's troubles is a double-edged sword: sometimes the best solution is not necessarily the most appropriate one. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Tumblr media
My Rating: 8/10
Finished airing in 2015 with a total of 13 episodes.
My Thoughts: Same as above.
Yakusoku no Neverland (The Promised Neverland)
Genres: Sci-fi, Mystery, Horror, Psychological, Thriller, Shounen
Tumblr media
Synopsis: Surrounded by a forest and a gated entrance, the Grace Field House is inhabited by orphans happily living together as one big family, looked after by their "Mama," Isabella. Although they are required to take tests daily, the children are free to spend their time as they see fit, usually playing outside, as long as they do not venture too far from the orphanage—a rule they are expected to follow no matter what. However, all good times must come to an end, as every few months, a child is adopted and sent to live with their new family... never to be heard from again. However, the three oldest siblings have their suspicions about what is actually happening at the orphanage, and they are about to discover the cruel fate that awaits the children living at Grace Field, including the twisted nature of their beloved Mama. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Tumblr media
My Rating: 8.5/10
Finished airing in 2019 with a total of 12 episodes.
My Thoughts: An intriguing premise with interesting characters and nice art. Plus I just love when things suddenly take a disturbing turn... as long as it’s done well and not just played for straight up shock value. Looking forward to the next season.
Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo (Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches):
Genres: Harem, Mystery, Comedy, Supernatural, Romance, School, Shounen
Tumblr media
Synopsis: When Ryuu Yamada entered high school, he wanted to turn over a new leaf and lead a productive school life. That's why he chose to attend Suzaku High, where no one would know of his violent delinquent reputation. However, much to Ryuu's dismay, he is soon bored; now a second year, Ryuu has reverted to his old ways—lazy with abysmal grades and always getting into fights. One day, back from yet another office visit, Ryuu encounters Urara Shiraishi, a beautiful honors student. A misstep causes them both to tumble down the stairs, ending in an accidental kiss! The pair discover they can switch bodies with a kiss: an ability which will prove to be both convenient and troublesome. Learning of their new power, Toranosuke Miyamura, a student council officer and the single member of the Supernatural Studies Club, recruits them for the club. Soon joined by Miyabi Itou, an eccentric interested in all things supernatural, the group unearths the legend of the Seven Witches of Suzaku High, seven female students who have obtained different powers activated by a kiss. The Supernatural Studies Club embarks on its first quest: to find the identities of all the witches.
[Written by MAL Rewrite]
Tumblr media
My Rating: 7/10
Finished airing in 2015 with a total of 12 episodes.
My Thoughts: Pretty girls everywhere and a few pretty guys. Loved the opening and the dreamy sort of art. The art throughout wasn’t bad either. Wasn’t overly impressed with the anime itself but certainly didn’t hate it. Also has an OVA for those interested.
Yamato Nadeshiko Shichihenge:
Genres: Comedy, Shoujo
Tumblr media
Synopsis: Ever since her crush rejected her by insulting her appearance, Sunako Nakahara has been a shut-in with a hatred for beauty, embracing all things morbid and occult-related. She is sent to live in her aunt's mansion which, to her dismay, she'll share with four exceedingly handsome boys her age. Furthermore, her flighty aunt has made a deal with these boys that in exchange for living there rent-free, they are to turn Sunako into a proper lady by the time she returns from a trip around the world. Thus begins Sunako's hectic life with abrasive Kyohei Takano, ladies' man Ranmaru Morii, calm Takenaga Oda, and friendly Yukinojo Toyama. As she interacts with them she finds them less obnoxious, and she may not be as much of an outcast as she thought. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Tumblr media
My Rating: 10/10
Finished airing in 2007 with a total of 25 episodes.
My Thoughts: One of the very first animes I watched and I absolutely loved it. The style, the atmosphere, the comedy, the characters, all of it!
Yuri!!! On Ice:
Genres: Comedy, Sports
Tumblr media
Synopsis: Reeling from his crushing defeat at the Grand Prix Finale, Yuuri Katsuki, once Japan's most promising figure skater, returns to his family home to assess his options for the future. At age 23, Yuuri's window for success in skating is closing rapidly, and his love of pork cutlets and aptitude for gaining weight are not helping either. However, Yuuri finds himself in the spotlight when a video of him performing a routine previously executed by five-time world champion, Victor Nikiforov, suddenly goes viral. In fact, Victor himself abruptly appears at Yuuri's house and offers to be his mentor. As one of his biggest fans, Yuuri eagerly accepts, kicking off his journey to make it back onto the world stage. But the competition is fierce, as the rising star from Russia, Yuri Plisetsky, is relentlessly determined to defeat Yuuri and win back Victor's tutelage.
[Written by MAL Rewrite]
Tumblr media
My Rating: 9/10
Finished airing in 2016 with a total of 12 episodes.
My Thoughts: The series that spawned a million pieces of fan art, fiction and merchandise. The figure skating anime.... who hasn’t heard of this one. Pretty enjoyable series in my opinion with an excellent opening and lovable characters. Too short though.

Idol Precure Series: A Gratuitous Costume Parade
Because that is literally what this is. An excuse to dress everyone up in cute clothes.
Not complaining, though. The girls look fabulous~
Anyways, y’all aware they were grouped together because of what their civilian identities have in common, right?
Well, that’s how I see it so I typed this up so I can use it for reference later.
Initially, it was just a companion (?) piece to this StarPre prediction post (therefore, the StarPre girls haven’t been included yet so go check out that post until they are) but now I’ll come back to edit/update it again when more new stuff is released or I find better quality pictures.
I also have some ideas for possible new groups if they ever add or mix-and-switch the current ones but that’ll be on another post altogether to avoid confusing myself, ahaha~
Tumblr media
Anata no kokoro o mitoshi-tai (Team “I see through your heart”)
Members: Yukishiro Honoka, Hanasaki Tsubomi, Tsukikage Yuri, Shirabe Ako, Yakushiji Saaya
At a glance, it seems like they put all the smart ones together but it’s really because these girls all wear glasses.
Yep, the meganekko group.
I mean, they are smart but the key point here is clearly the glasses. Which is a tad bit of a shame because I feel like that (moe aspect) takes away from recognizing them for their intelligence first.
On another note, interestingly enough, I believe there’s a play on words with their unit name. If you say it out loud without knowing the context, it really sounds like “I want to look into your heart”. Can someone confirm this? My amateur Japanese isn’t enough to explain it eloquently.
Others who can fit into this group: Hishikawa Rikka
Tumblr media
Bunbu Ranbu (”Martial Dance”)
Members: Myoudouin Itsuki, Aoki Reika, Yotsuba Alice, Hikawa Iona
Martial arts practitioners.
Also, I’m pretty sure Reika knows some kendo along with kyūdō since we’ve seen her wielding a giant ice sword as Cure Beauty multiple times throughout the franchise. We just didn’t see her do it in civilian form. Hmm. :/
Others who can fit into this group: ...
Tumblr media
Eternal Moment
Members: Higashi Setsuna (Eas), Akagi Towa (Twilight)
Former villainesses who turned good and became a main heroine.
I’m so glad they didn’t forget about their evil alter-egos cuz Eas and Twilight (or perhaps just Twilight) can be considered separate characters in their own rights so it’s nice to see them show up in advertisement again every once in a while.
Hmmm, their name though... it looks like this unit might only be intended for two people (”Eternal” for Towa and “Moment” for “Setsuna”).
That is, unless they add onto it like HNMH (see below) if they plan to include more girls into this category. If so, then...
Others who can fit into this group: Kurokawa Ellen, Lulu Amour
Tumblr media
Mystic Diva
Members: Kurokawa Ellen, Kenzaki Makoto
Haresora Concerto (”Clear Sky Concerto”)
Members: Minazuki Karen, Hojo Hibiki
Haresora Concerto with Mystic Diva (collab?)
Additional members: Tategami Aoi
Girls with strong affiliation to music...I think?
We saw Karen playing the violin in Yes!5 Precure’s OP and her parents are famous musicians themselves (just like Hibiki’s) but I can’t recall if she ever played any instrument during any particular episode in Yes! 5 or Gogo(?). Anyways...
Mystic Diva contains those who are renowned singers from another world (I don’t think Ellen sang much after she sorta permanently remained in human form but as Siren, she was one of the top contenders next to Hummy to sing the Melody of Happiness so there’s that).
Haresora Concerto obviously are for those who practice classical instruments.
Finally, the collaboration...is it a collaboration or did they really merge the two units together? If not, then Aoi will still need to be assigned to a group and if we’re going by the above criteria, she doesn’t fit into either one (Mystic Diva isn’t really her style anyway and she’s long given up the violin to play the guitar).
Maybe they’ll come up with another unit specifically focused on the rock genre in the future cuz we have Emiru and Lulu now so that’ll be enough to start one.
Others who can fit into Mystic Diva: Lulu Amour (+ guitar) [??]
Granted, Lulu didn’t sing before she arrived in present day Hugtto but she did say she’s going to bring music back to the future so...why not count that and the future as “another world”, hmm?
Others who can fit into Haresora Concerto: Yotsuba Alice (piano), Haruno Haruka (violin), Akagi Towa (violin), Kaidou Minami (violin) [??]
I don’t really associate Minami with music even though she is skilled at playing the violin. It’s just that compared to Towa and Haruka where the violin played a significant part in their story arcs, Minami and the violin is more secondary (pfft, not even) to her connection with the sea. But then again...Karen is in this group so I dunno :S
Did I forget anyone else who plays a classical instrument? I feel like I’m missing someone...
Others who can join the collab: Everyone listed above + Kasugano Urara (singing), Aisaki Emiru (singing, piano, violin and guitar)
Tumblr media
Haruka Nozomu Mirai no Hana (”Wishing for the Flower of the Far Off Future”)
Members: Yumehara Nozomi, Haruno Haruka, Asahina Mirai, Nono Hana
The dream chasers.
And by far, the unit I find the most aesthetically pleasing. ^^
Also, I feel like some people would try to argue that Mirai “didn’t have a goal and therefore, she doesn’t belong in this group” so as she is my beloved daughter, I need to make them eat the dirt of their WRONGNESS.
Because MahoPre’s epilogue obviously showed her trying to find a way to reunite with Riko and Ha-chan, aka bring their two worlds together again, so that definitely counts as her dream (not to mention, the most ambitious one out of everybody else’s in this group). Furthermore, if you actually watched MahoPre more closely, you would know her dream of the two worlds coming together came to her gradually rather than happening at a particular moment and was solidified after she had to separate from her team after the Big Boss fight in the finale.
And you know what? Her wish was fulfilled in the end so y’all can suck it. :P
Others who can fit into this group: ...
Tumblr media
Home Maid
Members: Kujo Hikari, Minamino Kanade, Madoka Aguri, Omori Yuko, Usami Ichika, Arisugawa Himari
Cooking or maybe, more accurately, sweets enthusiasts? *makes side eye at Aguri*
Well, besides that, they also either helped out at a restaurant or provided a service that had something to do with food (tea ceremony in Aguri’s case).
Hence, the “maid” part, I guess...
...but if so, then this is a poster for a maid cafe, not an idol unit! :P
Others who can fit into this group: Hyuuga Saki (family runs a bakery) [?], Akimoto Komachi (family runs a Japanese confectionery shop) [?], Hino Akane (family runs an okonomiyaki restaurant) [?], Haruno Haruka (family runs a Japanese confectionery restaurant) [?], Kotozume Yukari (learned from her grandmother how to perform tea ceremonies) [?], Kirahoshi Ciel (owns her own sweets restaurant), Nono Hana (grandparents ran a Japanese confectionery shop)
With the exception of Ciel, a lot of “?” cases here because similar to the Karen/Minami in Haresora Concerto, their main interests don’t particularly lie in cuisine and most of them never stated any intention of carrying on their family business. So it’s really up to whether you want them in this unit or not. Personally, I think Home Maid has enough members already so...
Oh and Hana was crossed off the list since she became the president of her own company at the end of Hugtto.
Tumblr media
M.V.P.
Members: Misumi Nagisa, Hyuuga Saki, Natsuki Rin, Hino Akane, Midorikawa Nao
This one’s self-explanatory. Athletes. Sporty types.
Not much else to say.
Others who can fit into this group: Hojo Hibiki, Kagayaki Homare (?)
Yes, while Homare does participate in a sport, singles figure skating is mostly an individual event so the MVP title can’t really be applied to her. I guess that was the reasoning behind why she wasn’t placed in this group even though that’s what she’s most known for.
Tumblr media
Osha-Revolution
Members: Kurumi Erika, Shirayuki Hime, Kagayaki Homare
The fashionistas!
This is my most favorite idol unit name out of all the others not only because it sounds like the most cleverly thought out but also because just hearing the word “revolution” gets the legendary Utena Revolution OP playing in my head again. *jams to the beat*
Thankfully, it’s got no connection to this idol series cuz *GAAASP*......*whispers* no.
Anyways, I’m glad it’s universally agreed upon that Erika and Hime would get along like five runways crisscrossing simultaneously at Fashion Week. Adding Homare to this lineup is appropriate because she’s always being complimented for dressing so stylishly.
Also, having someone as tall as her stand in between Erika and Hime like a giraffe hanging between two Hyacinth Macaws, lol is really...picture perfect.
Others who can fit into this group: ...
Tumblr media
Secret Lives
Members: Mimino Kurumi, Hanami Kotoha, Kirahoshi Ciel
Mascots who can transform and became one of the main heroines in their respective seasons.
I like their aesthetic, too. Even though they give off cute vibes as much as any of the other idol groups, there’s still a “mystery” air about them.
Others who can fit into this group: Kurokawa Ellen (?)
Ermmm...Ellen was a mascot but she wasn’t aligned with the good side in the beginning. And after she became a Cure, she didn’t revert back to cat form again... *shrug*
Tumblr media
Soushi⇄Souai (”Mutual Love with Creativity”)
Members: Mishou Mai, Akimoto Komachi, Hoshizora Miyuki, Kise Yayoi
Those whose strongest weapon is the pen (or brush) in their hand. Or something like that? I was trying to go for something more artful but I guess not. :P
This group’s name gave me a little trouble in translating but I think what I settled for in the end gets the idea across well enough. They love creating so much that they’ll be rewarded in kind with lots of inspiration.
...which sounds a bit unfair for everyone else suffering creative blocks but okay.
Others who can fit into this group: Nono Hana
Tumblr media
Triple Heart
Members: Momozono Love, Aida Mana, Aino Megumi
The love-obsessed.
Not much else to say here either.
Others who can fit into this group: ...
Tumblr media
Up to Me
Members: Aono Miki, Izayoi Riko, Kotozume Yukari
The Ladies.
At least that’s what I like to think them as. “Up to Me” gives off the impression of a very decisive person. Along with how mature they act, these girls fit that description to their own special degrees.
Like, Miki is very focused on her modeling career and confident she’ll go far, Riko has good work ethic and always aims for her goals and Yukari is, well, good at almost everything and is also a very “my pace” kind of woman.
...they all have purple hair, too, so I’m wondering if that’s another prerequisite for being added to this unit.
Others who can fit into this group: Tsukikage Yuri, Kenzaki Makoto (?)
Yuri would fit in no problem but Makoto I’m still teetering back and forth on...
Tumblr media
Urara*Kirara
Members: Kasugano Urara, Amanogawa Kirara
Ra♪Raa♪Raaa♪Raaaa♪Raaaaa♪ Suīto Suīto Puri-Kyu=AH♪
Girls who aspire for the stage (acting and signing for Urara and modeling for Kirara) and have “-rara” in their names.
If that’s the case here, guess this is another unit meant for anyone who fits those limited criteria. Otherwise...
Others who can fit into this group: Aono Miki (modeling), Kenzaki Makoto (singing)
Tumblr media
White Coat Angels
Members: Yamabuki Inori, Hishikawa Rikka, Kaidou Minami, Kenjou Akira
Those with a future in medicine.
But Minami...hmm, well, though it was never clearly stated what her profession was (I don’t think?) when she grew up, she could’ve gone on to become a wildlife veterinarian after she achieved her degree in marine biology so yea, she counts.
Others who can fit into this group: Minazuki Karen, Yakushiji Saaya
Exclusive??
Tumblr media
Kiratto! Open to All
Members: Kira Kira Precure a la Mode
Twin Love
Members: Aisaki Emiru, Lulu Amour
Pretty damn sure the first one was made specially just for KiraPre. No other girls sport blatant animal imagery on them. Plus, there’s no point in including anymore members than how many this group already has.
As for Twin Love, it’s a canon idol pair unit in Hugtto. Adding anyone else in it would not make it “Twin” Love anymore.
So that leaves the question of where Emiru and Lulu will go in the next series, I guess. Though I’m sure they’ll stick together wherever they’re assigned.
Side B

Royal Road
Members: Kokoda Koji (Coco), Natts, Ouji Masamune, Prince Kanata
Fairy Five
Members: Amai Shiro (Syrup), Pop, Raquel, Lance, Aroma
Did anyone else think that “Side B” also stood for “Side Boys” before Dark Party was released? (And yes, I know what a B-side track is so you don’t have to tell me)
Anyways, Royal Road is obviously for the prince characters (though I don’t think they really needed to add Ouji-senpai since he’s just a minor recurring character, not supporting but whatever) and Fairy Five is for the younger male mascots who can transform.
Others who can fit into Royal Road: Prince Zeke, Wakamiya Henri, Aisaki Masato (?)
If Dark Dream can join an idol unit despite being a movie-only character, then I don’t see why they can’t integrate Prince Zeke into this unit as well. All that matters is how popular or memorable he was in HaCha’s movie because everyone who was picked out for Side B had to have had an impact on the audience one way or another. But at least Zeke makes more sense than Ouji-senpai.
Henri needs no explanation as he is the “Prince of the Ice” but if you want a prince to accompany his occasional “princess” role, including Masato wouldn’t be a bad idea. Though I still think Masato’s more of a knight than a prince.
Others who can fit into Fairy Five: Kuroro (?)
Granted, Kuroro only got a human form by combining powers with Lock in the final battle of Go!Pri and hasn’t technically earned it yet since he only begun fairy training when the season ended...but if he can, why not?

The Enemy Boys
Members: Irisawa Kiriya, Luntarou (Wolfrun), Kurosu (Close), Rio (Julio/Pikario)
Off-White
Members: Soular, Westar, Phantom, Shut
“The Enemy Boys” ...more like “School Infiltrators” since they were the few among villains to pose as students in order to get closer to the Cures.
Off-White consists of bishounen villains who eventually came around to understanding and siding with the good side. Which explains the “off white” part, I guess, since it wasn’t an immediate reform for them but a more gradual one that needed a lot of persuasion and thinking.
Others who can fit into The Enemy Boys: ...
Others who can fit into Off-White: Charaleet
Tumblr media
Precure Legendary Heroes
Members: Cure Fire (Ban Kenji), Cure Sebastian (Sebastian)
Dark Party
Members: Dark Dream, Dark Precure, Regina, Bibury Vibry
Legendary Heroes is clearly a parody of the Precure franchise itself but since we already grew out of those jokes thanks to Hugtto, I’m hoping I won’t see any updates for this group ever again. And I will be absolutely livid if they dare to put Cure Infini in this unit because that is not funny.
Dark Party needs no extensive explanation as they were former nemesis/rivals to the Cures who never really got a “good” form even after their Heel-Face Turn (Dark Precure didn’t even get one of these). Which is fine because that’s essentially their charm. What makes dark magical girls so appealing is how awesome they are even when they’re “evil”.
Also gotta love the gothic lolita clothes that a number of them usually wear. If they didn’t keep Side B separate from Side A, I totally would’ve liked to put Eas and Twilight in this group as well.
Others who can fit into Dark Party: ...
List of updates under the cut...

A Gintama episode a day keeps the ending away…Episode 127
Episode Title: Sometimes You Must Meet To Understand
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MY 20 FAVORITE MOMENTS IN EPISODE 127 (manga chaps 203 and 204):
Omg I love this episode so much. I love this arc so much! I miss Kagura but I still really love this arc.
Tumblr media
1) It was nice of Gin-chan to make Shinpachi feel better.
Tumblr media
2) Of course I am not surprised at all that Kondou would just suddenly pop out, nor am I the least bit surprised that he’s spent days underneath the house. He probably lives throughout Otae’s house 90% of the time.
Tumblr media
3) I did notice that Shinpachi didn’t deny him at all this time.
Tumblr media
4) Kondou really has a shitty opinion of our beloved Yorozuya’s humble abode.
Tumblr media
5) Putting aside all the horniness for Otae (from her own brother), Kondou’s letter really wasn’t bad at all.
Tumblr media
6) This realistic beauty vision of Otae, courtesy of Kondou, was not in the manga.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7) Gin-chan picking his nose and examining the treasure he dug out was an extra touch by the anime team.
Tumblr media
8) And then, all of a sudden, what was already a wonderful arc instantly became SUBLIME.
Tumblr media
9) I love that the regulations bureau won’t allow the anime team to broadcast anything against different blood types but is completely ok with Hijikata bagging on women. I still want to know what girl did that to him to give him such a negative outlook on women.
Tumblr media
10) This convo was a little different in the manga, and I love the changes because Gintoki was so encouraging to Hijikata.
Tumblr media
11) Obviously Gin-chan has never written a love letter...and probably has never spoken to a proper lady. Lmao.
Tumblr media
12) I’m sure he was still thinking about Tae-chan.
Tumblr media
13) Nice view of my boys. That’s all. Wasn’t in the manga.
Tumblr media
14) Their stunned reaction to Hijikata’s letter-writing prowess.
Tumblr media
15) Just loved how they fanboyed over Toshi.
Tumblr media
16) Never thought Hijikata would be one to be so careless but I guess his flaws just make him that much more lovable.
Tumblr media
17) I loved that they were freaking out over what response Shinpachi would get because of Hijikata’s mistake, but I also wondered how long did they stay at his house considering it had to take time for the letters travel. Really love the idea that they were just living there together for the time being.
Tumblr media
18) I don’t think I’ve ever swooned over Shinpachi, but I did this time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
19) At first I couldn’t figure out why Kondou was so harsh on basically Gin-chan and Kagura considering they saved him and the Shinsengumi during the Crisis arc, and then I realized Kondou probably still thinks on some level that there’s something going on between Gintoki and Tae-chan.
Tumblr media
20) Another little extra touch from the anime team.
SHIPS TALLY:
Gintoki x Hijikata: unlike how it was in the manga, they actually had a few scenes where they interacted and were close to each other. Hell yes I’m gonna count all of that.
Tumblr media
Kondou x Otae: I don’t believe Kondou ONLY lusts after Tae-chan... but I’m sure he feels a healthy degree of sexual attraction to her, as he should.
Tumblr media
Shinpachi x Kirara: I was really so happy that Pachi-kun had potentially hit the jackpot.
Tumblr media
Gintoki x Okita: Gin-chan obviously really admires Sougo’s good looks.
Tumblr media
Gintoki x Shinpachi: self-explanatory I think.
Tumblr media
Shinpachi x Otae: this was Kondou’s fault.
Tumblr media
I was thinking of including Okita and Urara, but since they barely just met and were just talking, I’ll save it for the next episode. Btw, I keep on getting the two sisters’ names switched. It’s like a mental block, I never remember which name goes to who as soon as I finish reading the chapter or watching the episode. I messed it up this time as well so I had to come back in and edit my post. Lol.

Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma Chapter 253 Review
Tumblr media
It’s finally here. It is the 5th and Final Bout that will bring the closure to this regime of Azami. That is if Soma and Erina win and judging the moment that happened here, all I can say is, “Well, it was a good run while it lasted.” In all seriousness, this was a pretty amusing calm before storm chapter that got me excited to see the conclusion for more reasons than one.
Admittedly, I jumped the gun in the last chapter review because I declared the next bout will be a tag team match with Elite Ten Council versus Rebel Alliance; also known as Pairing War (and I do mean by “that”). Thankfully, Senzaemon meant what he said that doesn’t make my claim entirely false. However, the next bout format is changed and it is actually pretty interesting.
While I thought it was a joy to see the competitors dish out intriguing variety of meal, it has gone on for a while that I was mainly interested in characters. That probably explain the last two cards were done the way they did. Fortunately, it rejuvenated my interest with the style of a two-dish course. It hasn’t been done in the series, so this is a nice change-up.
What’s also good is this will be a better believable way to conclude without resorting to far more than a miracle of defeating the best of the best. The two-dish course is basically everyday restaurant routine: first, serve an appetizer, and then, the main dish. This solely relies on teamwork that their dish must complement each other to receive the best possible grade. That is one way to defeat the odds, so Soma can defeat Tsukasa here...right?
To make things even better, there will be no theme ingredient. It’s practically “give everything you got” concept. This is how Senzaemon sees it as a true gourmet. I’m beginning to see his master plan and why he agreed for Azami to take over the judge position. It helps with Azami getting a bit curious of his father-in-law’s agenda. He’s getting way too comfortable for his own good.
One of my favorite moments is the conflict between Azami and Erina, along with extras. He thought he could put her own daughter down easily by insulting her for never able to achieve true gourmet. Father of the year, everyone! Thankfully, Erina isn’t going to be damsel in distress, because she has bloom to a stronger character.
It’s wonderful to see her developed from her breakdown. I can still hear the distant echo saying that we will be stuck with her being a “villain” and always target Soma to lose. Not only she has made great friends, she is more open to be her own self rather being enslaved by her father. No longer a girl who was trapped by one manipulated philosophy; now comes forth a strong will independent woman. She won’t be converted to the “good girl” that only he prefers.
I said, “along with extras,” because the one simple panel got me not laughing but reminded me why I can’t be that upset with the series. As great and charming it was for Erina to stand up, her friends react gently, including Soma. Then we have a reality check that can be compared to abridged series writing and it was gold.
The truth is that she was never much of a good girl to begin with; at least to Soma. Sure, it might be his ego talking, but that moment is probably something fan would think and call out on the flaw of her speech. The thing is Tsukuda acknowledged it and that’s what makes it funnier. One mind think alike and use it as a comedy skit can do more than saving a moment. Hisako adding in was icing the cake. Hell, she is the one that pours in the endless cycle of tea, even behind bar. Ah, that is why you are number 2 in the popularity poll and that is a compliment. That’s why Soma keeps drinking like its endless refill. That was marvelous.
I don’t know what Azami is rambling about back at the dorm or whatever fancy he is sleeping at. It sounds like he truly believes he got this win in the bag with Erina being his forever puppet. I certainly look forward to see the real outcome blow his face away. That said I don’t want to try to think about those judges at the bed implies here. If anything, it only makes him the greatest villain of all Shounen series. After all, it is a Shounen genre. Hint, hint.
Anyway, the calm before storm scenery ensue with everyone preparing to help Soma and Erina. It’s a good thing that Kuga is there to minimize the helping hands since logic goes that too many cooks can spoil the broth. So he let the first years, Takumi and Megumi, to help and Isshiki to give out some advices; in his undies no less. Isn’t it snowy outside still or not? Kuga is a nice fellow that also developed well to a trusting buddy.
Soma and Erina spent the night to work out a tactic before the final bout begins. It’s a nice added detail with everyone still couldn’t sleep with everything on the line. The vibe of all or nothing is stacking up well. At least with Erina being there, they won’t be foolish enough to think of a plan in the last minute…right?
I don’t know what Tsukasa means when he feels like he is at the top of his game, but I would have assume this is Tsukuda’s way of saying that he will lose at his peak. On the other hand, it is also possible that it is his way to say that Tsukasa is at his best but still has to rely on Rindou, so if her dish doesn’t complement perfectly, then it doesn’t matter. I laugh at the detail of Urara no longer being a “female dog,” thanks to Momo’s syrup. Ah, this battle will be kinder than I imagined. And then, we got this scene…
My absolute favorite moment begins with the final hype for the Rebel Alliance to take the grand stage and compete in the final bout. No one knows who is taking on who, though I had my money on Soma versus Tsukasa because main character policy 101. First came out Takumi and Megumi in their tired/exhausted state that looks like they are ready to knock their head off. Then our beloved pair appears and good God, they are tired but more or less determined to battle. Naturally, I thought the comedy ends with them just being so tired but ready with a plan. They have one though…
Tumblr media
Rock, paper, scissor…
Isshiki, whatever happened to those offers for a new place to stay at? We’re going to need them to decide their next spot.
Joking aside (irony), I did laugh so much that I legit face palmed hard. I can’t believe they put their entire world on the line with the game that only screams, “They have no plan after that but to wing it…” It’s hilarious though, including Soma actually lost the battle. No doubt this was a fun treat to pairing and general fans. At this point, it’s a crime for them not to be together by the end. Fun fact: I found out that it could be a running gag that Soma will always lose to Erina in rock, paper, scissor game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That’s just fantastic.
I am surprised that Soma will take on Rindou, despite a suggestive hint from the last chapter. To begin with, Soma is up against Rindou. At least I am spared from Goddess Deathmatch that I don’t want to root for one to lose. Now I can selfishly root for Soma to lose. I guess I’m more surprised on the fact that Erina is taking on Tsukasa. Maybe Soma is right to question on his main character status.
The stunning part that I actually seen people seem to misread is that there is no more bout after this. Soma will not take over and go against Tsukasa if she loses. In other words, Erina is headlining this bout. No way! A heroine headlining in a Shounen series?! Inconceivable! Yes, I am mocking the haters. Anyway, I am aware that this is her character arc, but the fact she’s ending this one big is rather awesome. I mean Soma would technically beat Tsukasa but it won’t be “enough” to his view. It’s going to suck more if Erina takes first seat. I can already imagine…
This was a pretty fun chapter to read with nice showcase of character’s growth. The art is all around solid with the impact of Erina standing up against her father and plenty of comical visual including rock, paper, scissor. The final bout is finally set. It’s now wife versus other’s husband bout. Let’s get it on!

MAIN STORY: Episode 12-7
“The reason I’m here.”
Tumblr media
~ Shinjugamine Girl’s School・Rooftop ~
Miki: See~nsei! Miki: What was Kaede-chan’s poem about? I’m so curious now… You: Ummm, it went something like,『My beloved, how I adore you so.  I only live for you now. You: If you lose your way, if you get tired or hurt, I want to be your crutch, to support you. 』… You: It was lovely, very well-written, that’s why I remember it so clearly. Miki: That is an amazing poem, huh… You: It really is. But, when I first read it, I actually thought it was some kind of love letter. You: Well, I’ve barely even been working here a few days, so that really couldn’t have been the case, couldn’t it? Miki: Hmmm… You: What’s up? You seem to be very deep in thought.
Tumblr media
Miki: …I’ve got it! That’s it, that must be it! You: What are you talking about? Miki: The poem just now! Miki: Sensei, you’ve only been a teacher for a short period of time, but you’ve still been watching over us kindly, haven’t you? Miki: And if we get lost or worried about things, or we get hurt, you’ll hold out a gentle hand to us… Miki: Sensei, I think the reason you were chosen is because of how truly kind a person you are! You: I see… hearing you say that makes me really happy! You: Well then, I’ll do my best to live up to Miki’s expectations… Miki: Yup, yup! Do your very best!
Tumblr media
Itsuki: Ah, (Your name)-sensei, there you are. You: Yakumo-sensei… is something wrong? Renge: We’re having a party, a paaarty! Kokomi: We realized we haven’t had a welcome party for Sensei yet, right?
Tumblr media
Asuha: It’s going to be important for us to continue to deepen our relationship with the person who we’ll be turning to for guidance from now on… Urara: Don’t question it, let’s just have a toooon of fun♪ You: Yakumo-sensei, is this alright? Itsuki: The students went ahead and planned this for you all on their own, (Your name)-sensei. Itsuki: Please, come and join us. There’s no need to hold any reservations about it. You: Okay!
Tumblr media
Mimi: I’m so excited, I’m a little shaky for some reason! Kaede: Sensei, come and help us out a bit with this. You: Sure, whatever you need, just leave it to me. Hinata: Waaaai~! Let’s have a super duper fun party, okay?! You: Yeah!
Tumblr media
You: Why did the Holy Tree choose me…? As far as that goes, I still don’t understand… You: So for right now, I’m just going to give this my all… You: Whatever I can do to support them, no matter how small the task… to me, that’s a good enough reason to be here…
Tumblr media
Subaru: Sensei, what’re you looking up at the sky so solemnly for? Haruka: It’s almost time, isn’t it? You: Ahh, that’s right.
Tumblr media
Yuri: Hold on a moment! As the Public Morals Committee Chairman, I’d like to say a few words before we continue…! Nozomi: Yuuuri~! We don’t have time for that right now, you can save it for later! Yuri: Hrm… Anko: Okay, let’s start the countdown! 3! Sakura: 2! Miki: 1!
Tumblr media
(Flash!)
Narration: And so, big flower-shaped fireworks soared high out into the cosmos… Narration: As well as deeper and deeper into your heart, it set in…

Without question, this is the definitive take on the season.
Let’s not bury the headline—I finished exactly three shows from this season. We’ll get into my thoughts on each shortly, but as those of you who have been following me for a while know, this was a fairly big shift in my relationship with seasonal anime. This upcoming spring season will mark the start of my fourth year following simulcasts, and up until last season I had been watching anywhere from 8-15 shows a season. Of course, those numbers had been trending downwards, but still—to go from 8 shows a week to a mere 3 (and not often watching things the day or even the week they came out) was… well, it was different.
I’ve got a post in the works about the changes I’ve been making in the way I watch anime and the reasons for those changes, but we’ll leave that for another day. For now, all you need to know is that while I only finished 3 shows, I did sample a pretty wide variety of things that I’ve got thoughts on. I’m not going to be ranking things or doing awards as I have in seasons past—with only three shows, such ceremony seems rather misplaced.
So enough spinning our wheels, let’s talk about some Winter 2017 anime!
Finished Shows~
I suppose it makes sense to start with my favorite show of the season, director Shingo Natsume’s ACCA. I wish I could remember back to the start of the season and what I thought of ACCA before the first episode aired, but I just don’t remember. Maybe it’s because the show was more of a speculative pick that anything for me to start, but the first episode blew me away with its slow-paced and effortless sense of style.
While the show as a whole didn’t manage to keep up visually with the excellent opener and best-of-the-season OP, it did manage to find some other strengths to lean in to. Liborek’s coverage of the show over on the Sakugablog highlights some of the reasons the show’s visual quality was so inconsistent (heavy storyboarding duties on one staffer, a ton of outsourcing), but it was nice to see that overall the production issues never overtook ACCA‘s core strengths: 1) the compelling relationships between many of its characters, 2) the general human cuteness it put on display, 3) the richness of its world, and 4) the well-handled slow burn of political intrigue.
Perhaps more than any recent show I’ve seen, ACCA was fascinating for its depiction of various relationships. Jean and Lotta had their comfortable dynamic; Jean and Nino’s genuine affection and care for each other stood out; Nino and Lotta were charming to watch together; Jean and Mauve were riveting as a couple (a ship I was both totally okay with not sailing and also crushed over); Mauve and Grossular’s mutual respect was super neat. Et cetera. And that these relationships and love and loyalty of a human, familial kind ran alongside their political parallels in a kind of beautiful synchronicity made the experience all the richer.
In the end, ACCA left me really satisfied. As great as the cute interactions between characters (and their food lol) were on an immediate basis within the show, the way things pulled together emotionally (like in episode 8) and plot-wise (in episode 12) was immensely gratifying to watch. Whether it was the revelation of the backstory that tied all the characters together or the sheer rush of watching Jean and co. turn the tables on Lillium at the last second, ACCA was beautifully crafted as a story. When I finished the final episode, I felt full, like I’d just eaten a satisfying English muffin and finished a cup of tea (a ritual I actually completed with over half of the show’s episodes—it just put me in that mood). That’s a good feeling to walk away from a show with. I’m glad I watched it.
Speaking of things with satisfying endings, how about the finale of Konosuba‘s second season? Kazuma a pile of bones and Aqua lauching a final boss character into the sky with a magic-fueled uppercut? Seriously, what more could I ask for?
That’s more of less to say that Konosuba delivered more or less exactly what I wanted—and expected from it this season. The stuff I didn’t like about the first season (ecchi stuff, Kazuma being gross, Kazuma getting to take most of the heroic planning stuff credit) was still there, and the stuff I liked (Aqua) was still there too. Did anyone else noticed that the quality of the episodes seemed to go up and down proportionately to Aqua’s screentime, or just me? Well, this is notice to all you who didn’t realize this, so now you can go back and watch this season with new eyes. Lucky you, you will be able to experience the full glory of Aqua clapping for fishes.
Incidentally, I found even more things this season to relate to Aqua with. Everything else about the Axis cult aside (yes, I’m cherry picking), it was pretty darn cool to see the way Aqua responded with such benevolence to her followers even though they treated her like crap. I mean, sure, they’re directly linked with her goddess powers, but still… seeing the lengths our beloved selfish goddess would go to for the people who worshipped her (or their image of her lol) still was neat. As I’ve said before, Konosuba‘s appeal for me lives and dies with Aqua—it was good that it went out on a pro-Aqua high.
https://sakugabooru.com/data/5752ba99b0be8e2469f3094f7b5a3f7d.mp4
And then we have Hand Shakers. Yes, I finished it. I watched every second of every episode (except the OP/ED, which were eminently skippable and not at all necessary to setting a mood for the show). It was bad, as I expected, but I don’t regret watching it. If nothing else, it’s been a while since I actually finished a show I could rate a 3/10; the bell curve of my MAL rankings was starting to get out of whack.
As you may recall, I wrote a piece early in the season “defending” Hand Shakers‘ visual choices. The thoughts I expressed in that post regarding the fascinating prospect of seeing a show place pursuit of a particular aesthetic before all over values—including coherency—still hold true, although I’m sad to report that Hand Shakers largely settled into a kind of complacent expression of that aesthetic as the show wore on. That was a disappointment for me, and I’d have to say that K will probably remain the definitive GoHands-style anime for me going forward.
So what about Hand Shakers‘ story and characters? Well, the story pulled a last-second spin and lots of the characters were either yucky (the incest siblings) or grating (Makihara-sensei) or just plain uninteresting (Kodama Awaza, in a tragic waste of an idol character). But there were still some that I wound up liking, particularly Chizuru and Hayate and their affectionate, almost pseudo-parental friendship with Koyori and Tazuna. The latter pair wasn’t anything exceptional and bogged down by Koyori’s nearly show-long muteness, but even so I felt there was a enough of a kernel of a well-intentioned effort to make their relationship feel genuine and sweet that I found them pleasant to watch.
In summary, I absolutely do not recommend you, your friends, or anyone else watch Hand Shakers. It is not a good anime, and at its worst it is disgusting and offensive. And yet, somehow there are things in it that are good, too. That’s something I don’t think I’ll ever not find fascinating—seeing the unexpected good in something largely bad.
Unfinished Shows~
That covers the stuff I finished, but what about the stuff I didn’t? There were plenty of shows less bad than Hand Shakers that aired this season. Some of them were—Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, Kemono Friends, BanG Dream!, and Idol Jihen.
I got the farthest into Idol Jihen, which I watched 5 episodes of. It wasn’t a terrible show, as it sometimes indulged in some delightfully wacky contortions of its ridiculous premise, but generally speaking it was a boring waste of time in between the bigger moments. It didn’t help that the characters had no personality or charm (at least part of that due to the horrid character designs). Draggle’s right—watch AKB0048 instead.
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is a substantially better show that Idol Jihen, yet I watched less of it. That’s probably not Dragon Maid‘s fault. I liked the three episodes of it that I watched. It’s cute, with KyoAni’s typical fixation of small gestures and warm character interactions, and has some standout things going for it—like Kanna, its (somewhat inferior) rendition of Non Non Biyori‘s Renge. But just being nice wasn’t enough to motivate me to really catch up with it, so it just benignly slid off my watching schedule.
Kemono Friends was somewhat the same, although I will say that I enjoyed watching people talk about Kemono Friends more than I liked watching them talk about Dragon Maid—and possibly more than I liked watching the show itself. I did three episodes of Kemono Friends for a Crunchyroll article I wrote on it myself, but there were a number of other great pieces (Kastel’s, Froggy’s, Bobduh’s) that came out about Kemono Friends. I can’t remember the last time so many different writers all were all hooked on writing about the same show in this way. If meme shows are what it takes to attract a bunch of critics all at once, I guess more meme shows is what we need.
Demi-chan wa Kataritai lost me after three episodes, too, but for worse reasons that the prior two. After a lovely first episode, it started to go more and more for romance and creepy stuff between the high school girls and the teacher, and I really just wasn’t in the mood to navigate that in a show I’d hoped would be more pleasant and less blatantly sexual than Urara-chan, which I never even picked up for that reason.
Oh, yeah, I watched one episode of BanG Dream! and while I found it somewhat quirky, that wasn’t enough to get me back. I also opted not to watch the (obvious AOTS) sequel of Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinju on a week-by-week basis, meaning that someday in the future I’ll have the glorious chance to marathon it all at once and bawl my eyes out.
And that pretty much sums up my Winter 2017 anime experience! What did you guys watch and enjoy this past season? Feel free to tell me what I missed out on in the comments (although I can’t promise I’ll pick up anything other than Rakugo in the future).
Without question, this is the definitive take on the season. Without question, this is the definitive take on the season.

So maybe I haven’t left my house in over a month…Maybe it’s doing things to my brain and I’m latching onto any random little thing for intellectual entertainment. That could be the case. I’m just human after all. But it’s totally not the case for this post! This one is solid! And based on like the three show’s I’ve seen…
I think that in anime the girl with the long hair always gets the guy…
I couldn’t find a character with really long hair….
Admittedly I don’t watch many romance animes and love triangles tend to be one of my least favourite tropes so I haven’t seen that many shows where the male lead has multiple love interests and actually ends up with someone. Or at least shows an undeniable interest in one of the characters.
Off the top of my head, the ones I can think of are Toradora, Steins;Gate, Re:Zero, Yamada-kun and the seven witches, To Love Ru and In/Spectre. O.k. so In/Spectre is a bit of a stretch for this but both Saki and Kotoko do show a romantic interest in Kuro and he dated Saki until she cut her hair even shorter than Kotoko and now bam, he’s with the blonde even though he acts like she’s nothing but a pain in his rear end!
It’s difficult to blame Okabe for being smitten by Kurisu. I get it, most people would get it. But poor short haired Mayuri didn’t even stand a chance! Kurisu’s hair goes down past her…. cough…hips. Maybe if Faris took out her pigtails she could be of some competition but I’m not sure.
I’m not sure how many people have seen Yamada-kun. For what it’s worth I thought it was an entertaining enough harem show. Now Yamada has possibly the most extensive harem with his pick of a whole array of girls yet he only has eyes for Urara and she happens to have beautiful long blonde hair. There are other girls with long hair in the show mind you but the only ones with even remotely as important a role, and therefore that could be potential rivals, all have considerably shorter hair than her.
there’s a lot of gender swapping too….
You could argue that To Love Ru doesn’t actually have a canon couples resolution but c’mon, we all know Lala steals the show. To Love Ru and Toradora are actually the shows that really made me realize that something fishy was going on here. Because in both of these shows, the protagonist already had a love interest. In fact, in both cases, he was deeply smitten by a classmate he had known for some time (as such the relationship was built on more than passing fancy, and was trying hard to pursue a romance with that character. And in both cases, the young lady in question seemed potentially opened to those advances. The young short haired lady…. And then BAM, another girl with a fiery personality and a habit of putting our protagonist in physical pain swoops in and steals his heart. Another girl with very long hair!
I haven’t seen either but both leading ladies in Your Lie in April and Sword Art online have romantic character arcs and very long hair so I’m just going to go right ahead and assume they also prove my point.
Now you could just say it’s a romance trope. Romance heroines have had long flowing hair since the dawn of the genre. It’s sort of prerequisite. Anime is just following along with a formula. And it’s also what fans want out of their leading romantic ladies. That’s how clichés happen, it’s cause the public responds to them!
Well ladies and gentlemen, I submit to you my last piece of evidence: Rem! Rem is a fan favourite. I mean Beatrice is queen and we should all bow to her, but there’s no denying that powerful yet fragile Rem captured the audiences imagination. Countless fan artists have devoted hours to trying to do her justice. I don’t know if it’s the fact that she has a twin sister or the ultra sexy maid outfits she wears… we may never know the secret of her popularity but at the very least, all the polls I found put her squarely ahead of Emilia.
To add to that, Rem actually has feeling for Subaru. She might be the only character in all of these shows to have actually confessed and she did so after getting to know the young man and after saving him a number of times. Honestly there is no reason for Subaru not to choose to be with Rem. There is ample reason for him to agree. except of course, Emilia has much longer hair!
See! SEEEEEEEE!?!
It’s not the will of the public and it’s not for the sake of narrative integrity. In many cases it doesn’t make any sort of obvious logical sense for the protagonists to turn down one girl in favour of another. These are all different shows with different genres, themes and intended audience and yet they all have one thing in common! The hair!!! And if it’s not just a question of we have ingrained troglodyte instincts that make us see long hair  as romantically desirable in women (because again Rem is beloved and if that fan art is anything to go by, a lot of people see her very…cough…romantically, indeed), then there’s really only one answer. Illuminati!
OK, maybe not the actual Illuminati, those don’t exist (please don’t come for me). But clearly there is an underground shadow organization controlling the anime industry to have long haired ladies get the guy. I’m not entirely sure if we want the guy though. In a lot of those cases the guys are sort of not as impressive as the girls. I’m not sure if the point is to make ladies want to have long hair. I think it may be to make people want to be and/or be with ladies with long hair. And who would profit from that?
wikihow is terrifying
You guessed it, the wig industry!
The big shot Wig Lobby has gotten their hooks into our beloved anime industry and are trying to brainwash us all. There is no such thing as a short wig… And it’s working! I’m looking up wigs on another tab right now! We can’t let this happen. We do people have to fight back against this injustice!By continuing to create really amazing fan art of short haired anime ladies, and possibly sending it to me. Because that’s uhm..how we win. Yeah, that sounds about right.
I think I’ve made my point. If I disappear in the coming days, you know who did it. Do not trust your local wig salesman. Keep fighting the good fight, together we’ll get them!
Conspiracy Theory! Long Haired Anime Girls Get The Guy! So maybe I haven't left my house in over a month...Maybe it's doing things to my brain and I'm latching onto any random little thing for intellectual entertainment.
