thought of Raikou and her heavenly king
I like Raikou a lot, but I'd be lying if I said anything to say about her. Out of all characters in Sakurai's recreation of Tsukihime, Raikou is by far the most derivative, to the point I really can't think of any Raikou character trait that isn't also present in Akiha. In fact, Raikou was the starting point from which I started noticing the connections that made the post above. For maybe 2 years, it was only Raikou=Akiha in my brain.
That said, Raikou was a very important personal step in my relationship with the other character. I don't think I need to anyone that, but Akiha is a very unapproachable figure and at least the original version of her route didn't help me at all with that. The first time I felt something positive about Akiha was when Hisui's route clarified the true nature of her relationship with Kohaku. For years, my take on Akiha has been "I don't like her individually, but I like her relationship with Kohaku", which is the one Akiha thing that Raikou lacks. However, as I found myself enjoying Raikou content, my reaction was obviously "Wait, I like Akiha now, actually".
My biggest hope for Raikou in Samurai Remnant is that the new context allows her to shine in ways that distance herself from her Tsukihime inspiration (and vice-versa as my hope for Red Garden) because I checked my tags for this and to this day I still haven't ever failed to mention one in a meta post about the other.
Kintoki for the longest time existed as a joke character and not one of the funny ones, as the protagonist of Heian, he's perfect. I love the idea of seeing a Heroic Spirit as a complete person secure of the ideals he stands for and then meeting his living counterpart in a period when the world he defended still leaves him lost and unsure of what he wants and cares for. I loved to see so much of Fate/Zero's Kirei reflected in such an ambiguously good guy, and I love especially Kintoki's relationship with Douman.
Tsuna I don't like. His role and backstory are quite well fit for Heian's themes, as just some guy who went so above his expected fate through the sheer power of caring, but Heian is a story as rich of The Tale of Genji intertextuality as it is of Tsukihime intertextuality, and I can't help but draw the worst possible implications out of Tsuna's backstory being meant to mirror Hikaru-gimi's relationship to Fujitsubo and Murasaki.
Urabe and Sadamitsu aren't in Fate/ yet, and honestly, I don't feel any need for them to be unless something super original is done with them. Urabe's fatherly archer archetype sorta overlaps too much with Tell, and Sadamitsu's only interesting legend is when he found the feral Kintoki and brought him to the civilization. Considering his initiative to take Kintoki to the human side, Sadamitsu could have potential as a character who actively wants to bridge the gaps between humans and non-humans whenever possible, but not in FGO, where the human and oni Servants are already sharing Chaldea's space without the need of his intervention.

I know Sakata Gintoki is based on Kintaro or Sakata no Kintoki (was a later name if i read it correctly) OR the real person Sakata Kintoki who lived during the Heian period and I know Joui 4 is based on Shishi but the fact that Kintaro belonged to the "four braves" is very interesting to me. Indeed Sorachi did pick here and there some historical/folklore things and it´s so cool. Also I should say that Kintaro was later the chief of the four braves.
Four braves is also named as Yorimitsu's Shitennō and this is referred to Buddhist Four Heavenly Kings and Joui 4 is also named as that (heavenly kings). But if I understand it correctly it´s a term you can use for a group of four famous historical figures or something like that. But it matches perfectly. Also the members are very interesting.
We have four members: Sakata no Kintoki; Urabe no Suetake; Usui Sadamitsu and Watanabe no Tsuna
Sadamitsu is sometimes depicted as a female in arts. (so i would place Zura on his position) Then we have Watanabe no Tsuna who is famous for his military exploits. (here i would place Takasugi) But there are a lot more things about him you can read. In legends he fought with demons, monsters and beasts. About the fourth one there isn´t that much where I´m looking but it was said that he assisted Yorimitsu throughout his life. (the last position then to Sakamoto)
Very interesting to see that you can find here and there some things and again it is true that Sorachi picked a few things and put it into his story.
Also again it´s a mix between folk legends and some historical things.
Probably you all know this but I had to research a little bit about it for myself.
And because of that I get a better picture on all of this.

Shitennou Analysis: Addendum
EDIT: Hey look at this I found in my drafts.  Anything struck out was probably updated by Wikipedia.
This won't be as long as the other two, I promise.
Part One
Part Two
So I just ran into this interesting bit of information.  During the Heian period, there was a man called Minamoto no Yorimitsu (AKA Raikou) who had is own set of Shitennou, named:
Sakata no Kintoki
Urabe no Suetake
Usui Sadamitsu
Watanabe no Tsuna
Now, Wikipedia does list the each of these as connecting to one of the 4 Symbols (on this page as Suzaku, Seiryuu, Genbu, and Byakko respectively) but I can't for the life of me find anything to back this up besides references to a video game called Otogi 2, so take that with a grain of salt.  I have a book that summarizes Minamoto no Yorimitsu's adventures, but it doesn't mention any of the Shitennou by name.
But for some funny parallels, Kintoki/Kintaro who would be Nephrite is described as "ruddy," very strong, and has a bib with the word "gold" on it.  Anime Nephrite has dark red hair, has an image color of yellow and is all about the mansion and cars.  Kintoki also carries an axe. Nephrite is notably shown wielding a halberd or axe/pike like weapon in their line-up, as opposed to everyone else's swords:
Tumblr media
And the one known as Usui Sadamitsu (supposedly of Genbu/Zoisite) seems to be modernly depicted as female.
There don't seem to be as many connections with the other two (having a lot of trouble finding ANY info on Suetake) but it's some interesting food for thought.   I've never been so sad that I've lost my access to JSTOR, and I'll probably run off to the library at some point to see if I can dig anymore up.
Tumblr media
Left to right: Suetake, Kintoki, Yorimitsu, Tsuna, and Sadamitsu. Fighting a Tsuchigumo.
It looks like it's a couple hundred years off from the Bronze Age collapse theory, but hey, I tried.
There is another set of Shitennou from the Tokugawa clan but since they're real people that haven't been built up into mythology like the first set, it's way harder for me to connect to the Sailor Moon generals thematically.

raikous what
Retainers was the wrong term I meant subordinates but anyway! Kintoki is only one of her followers, the other were Watanabe Tsuna, Urabe Suetake and Usui Sadamitsu! In her ascensions you can see her holding their weapons. The second sword is Watanabe’s so he’s a Saber, Usui qualifies for Lancer and Rider, and Urabe is an Archer hence why Raikou has a bow and quiver of arrows in her arts

💭 + Raikou, talk about your four retainers
Tumblr media
She lit up at the mention of her four retainers. “Ah! Watanabe no Tsuna, my cute Kintoki, Urabe no Suetake and Usui Sadamitsu?” She though for a moment, wondering where to begin.
“Ah, I shall start with the one everyone knows! My cute Kintoki! I believe everyone knows him, he’s really cute and adorable and just deserves all the motherly love fufu~”
“Now about Watanabe no Tsuna...Tsuna-kun is very much hyperactive. He’s such a gem, wanting to work harder than everyone else! I have to pat him over the head to calm him down, be a good mother to him fufu...” She paused, reminiscing a little. “He has great ability and mobility where he did manage to injure poor Ibaraki fufu...”
“Urabe no Suetake holds amazing archery skills. He can hit targets from at least 100 metres or more from when I was alive. He’s a little quiet, yet nervous. Especially around women that’s not me. Suetake-kun is just precious. Maybe if I see him now, he’ll come to mother....” Raikou remembers a few times where he had been awfully shy and she’d have to coax him out, even as he grew up. Only she could get him to talk most of the time.
“Finally, Usui-kun. He’s another one, very hyperactive! He often talked about his friends, especially the bonds between him and the other three. Like one of those shows where they talk about friendship. It’s just so refreshing! I miss him like I do the others. His abilities with both a spear and riding skill, is one to be reckoned with fufu...”
The Berserker turned mother mode had just gushed over her retainers. She loved them dearly and misses them so much. Maybe they could be summoned to Chaldea one day and then she’ll smother them!

Notes on Scenes
Set 1 - Scene 4: Azusa (梓) - The Spider Woman
This is based on a kabuki play known as Kumo no Ito Azusa no Yumihari (蜘蛛糸梓弦), which translates to “The Spider’s String on The Cherry Branch Bow.” In the main story Minamoto no Yorimitsu, a very famous historical figure, is spending the night in his castle while his bodyguards, Sakata Shumenjo Kintoki and Usui Yukienojo Sadamitsu are guarding him in the next room. Suddenly a Kamuro (a girl in a courtesan’s returnee and would eventually become a courtesan herself), who they do not immediately recognize, appears to serve them tea which makes them sleepy. The kamuro then transforms into her true form, which is an evil spider who is planning to kill Minamoto no Yorimitsu, but is stopped by the bodyguards. The killer spider eventually takes the form of Usugumo (薄雲), Minamoto no Yorimitsu’s lover/oiran (info from here). I’m not too sure what the Inoue interpretation of these characters will be, so I can’t really go into much detail.
Set 1 and Set 3 -  Scene 5: Goshiki Zarashi (五色晒) - Bleaching Five Colors
The title eludes to the famous washing and bleaching of fabric in the streams around Kyoto. Again, I’m not too sure what this scene will be covering, but it will likely involve women who are dyeing fabric.
Set 2 -  Scene 4: Ebira Genta (箙源太) - Genta’s Quiver of Arrows
Based on a Noh play, it tells the tale of Kajiwara Genta Kagesue and how he snapped the branches from a plum tree and makes a bow and arrows.
Set 2 - Scene 5: Mai Ōgi Sono No Sei Ume (舞扇園生梅) -  Dancer’s Fan in The Plum Garden
From an older nagauta, it tells the story of a princess and her magical fan that displays a motif of plum blossoms while she dances in a grove of plum trees.
Set 2 - Scene 1 and Set 3 - Scene 2: Shōjō (猩々) - Orangutans
This is a more comedic piece about a duo of orangutans who steal some sake from a sake peddler. It’s also a bit of a pun as very drunk people are also called orangutans in Japanese.
