Song Review: Grateful Dead - “Attics of My Life” (Live, Aug. 25, 1993)
Bringing back and keeping “Attics of My Life” in the rotation was one of the best decisions the Grateful Dead made in its final half-decade.
A deep, harmony-rich and existential ballad, the song simply meant more in 1990 than it did in 1970. Just as importantly, the Dead - never known for their singing abilities - found the discipline to deliver the delicate song as the song delicately demanded.
The Aug. 25, 1993, “Attics” in California is a prime example of this. Just released as the latest “All the Years Live” video, it finds the group playing gently and focusing all its energy on the vocals, which Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir and Vince Welnick delivered with the precision of a Swiss watch, if not just exactly perfectly.
When there was no dream of mine/you dreamed of me, they sing.
And many of us still do.

Y'know, for as much as the Internet seems fascinated by the "weird bands" of old like Frank Zappa, the Butthole Surfers, Primus, and Mr. Bungle, and even by newer ones like System of a Down, GWAR, and Babymetal, I'm surprised that almost nobody has talked about The Tubes.
These guys were weird, and yet I never hear about them among those other bizarre juggernauts.
They had a biting satirical edge to their lyrics, often satirizing television and pop culture; they an intricate live show where members and backing dancers wore costumes including assless chaps, giant cigarette costumes, and prosthetic penises, and where their lead singer portrayed a doped-up rocker named Quay Lude; and their eclectic music style blended punk, glam rock, art rock, shock rock, and synth-driven pop.
In other words… they were the Falsies of the 1970s-80s. And they had multiple hits! That's the craziest part! They regularly received MTV airplay!
Yet nowadays, it feels like the Tubes are mostly only remembered as one-hit wonders for their "She's a Beauty," or if you're really a nerd, you may remember them for having a brief appearance in the oft-derided 1980 movie Xanadu (although the latter was admittedly the best scene in that movie).

Hell, even I didn't know how weird they were until I decided to look them up after reading about how their keyboardist Vince Welnick later joined the Grateful Dead. And that is a shame because the Tubes were truly something else and deserve to be remembered for much more than what they are currently remembered for.
Anyway, if you want to get a sense of their true weirdness, check out "White Punks on Dope."

I'd also advise watching the music video for their song "Sports Fans," which I will put after the Read More because fair warning, it does contain male nudity at the beginning. (But it is one hell of a trip, believe me.)

Song Review: Grateful Dead - “Saint of Circumstance” (Live, June 28, 1991)
With Bruce Hornsby and Vince Welnick playing keyboards in the band, the Grateful Dead’s sound got bigger - and sometimes more cluttered - after Brent Mydland’s death. Meanwhile, the vocals got smaller.
Both changes are evident on the June 28, 1991, version of “Saint of Circumstance” that’s been released as part of the band’s ongoing “All the Years Live” video series. With less than a year of stage time in the rear view, the seven-piece Grateful Dead is already on the same musical page; however, the vocal-dependent “Saint” is one of those songs that never fully recovered from Mydland’s all-too-early exit.
And when Hornsby abandons the ivories for the synth atop his piano, the era’s Techo Dead sound is in full flower.

Not being familiar with the band Zero, a quick scan of the personnel revealed all one needs to know. Surely Deadheads and Jerry Garcia fans know Robert Hunter, Vince Welnick, and John Kahn. The names of the co-founders, guitarist Steve Kimmock and drummer Greg Anton should be familiar too as well as tenor saxophonist Martin Fierro and pianist Nicky Hopkins (The Beatles,…
