"The way Vriska introduces herself to John says everything about her, and about their relationship, and really, her relationship with everyone. She forcefully interrupts a moment that is deeply important and emotional to him, thereby probably denying that opportunity from ever happening again, just so she can insert herself into his life and force him to pay attention to her. Now here she is again, being kind of rude (e.g. calling him stupid), but more than that, being vaguely obsequious overall, which is something about her I was harping on in the last book. Vriska cozies up to certain kinds of people, namely those she wants something from or feels will elevate her status by association. John's the perfect mark for the manipulative, ass-kissing games she plays. Since we're in the Vriska Zone now and forever, I'll just keep talking about her. It bears more examination of how her manipulation strategy seems to deftly blend ass-kissing and aggression. Successfully manipulative, sociopathically charismatic people tend to have this balance down to a science. The strategy seems to involve controlling the interplay between flattery, appealing to common interests, charming or flirtatious rhetoric, and little jabs, negs, or outright insults to keep the target off-balance. The target gets sort of hooked by the fascinating spectacle, intrigued, and strangely disarmed. Too much flattery results in suspicion, too much negativity is a turn-off (or taken to an extreme like Karkat, results in not being taken seriously at all). The barbs mixed in with the flattery are effective because they lead the target to think, "If this person really wants something from me, why would they insult me?" Of course, this is how pick-up artists operate, which isn't far off from Vriska's mindset when pursuing her goals—which, although more broad than romantic goals, are still mixed in with them, with the end result being part of the overall power play. Over the course of her tactics focused on John to make herself more relevant, when actual romantic designs start seeping into the fabric of her manipulation campaign, that's when it all starts to get...A Little Bit Weird.
We've already seen a lot of Vriska's tactics on display in Hivebent, with mixed results. By now she's had a lot of practice, and she's bringing all her skills to bear on the perfect rube for her schemes, this nerdy, gullible Egbert kid. The romantic angle that surfaces from this effort, as I just implied, is vaguely troubling. How else to describe it... ? Icky, maybe? Something is off about it, and we feel that more than John does, obviously because we know a lot more about her than he does. For Vriska, are the romantic desires real? Is she such a mess inside that she wouldn't be able to tell whether the feelings are genuine or not? It's more likely that it's all about the ego boost, the power trip involved with grooming this hapless fool into the thing she wants him to be, and hoodwinking him into feeling something for her. But for him, it's probably more sincere. His first awkward experience with romance, albeit one contrived by a manipulator. Too bad he has no idea that none of this even has anything to do with him. It's still just about Vriska's gamesmanship with Terezi, who is another person exhibiting many of the aforementioned qualities of a manipulator. Terezi just uses hers to target a different boy. Both are highly successful with their boywork, but they take very different approaches." -Andrew Hussie

GG: you said you are asking me permission first and i appreciate that GG: but if you are asking im afraid my answer is no! AT: oKAY, i RESPECT THAT, AT: bUT, i WONDER, GG: what? AT: i WONDER IF A TRULY SELF CONFIDENT GUY, wITH THE BEST SELF ESTEEM THERE IS, wOULD EVEN NEED TO ASK, AT: mAYBE THE BEST GUY WOULD JUST KNOW HE WOULD BE SUCCESSFUL, aND WOULD DO IT ANYWAY BECAUSE IT IS FOR YOUR OWN GOOD, aND EVERYONE ELSE'S,
I don't think Tavros is just emulating Vriska here. This is a very Alternian mindset, and it's one we've seen before.
Tumblr media
Alternia is, after all, an empire. It's a society whose idea of success is inexorably tied to violence and domination - so if you're trying to be a better troll, you'll probably gravitate to both, even if you don't realize it.
It's not really about your personality, either. Karkat is, by all accounts, one of the more moral trolls in the party - but as we've seen above, even he's got those imperial instincts. This sort of thing is insidious, and once it worms its way into your brain, it can be hard to shake.
Tavros is a very straightforward example. He's finally gained some 'confidence' - and what's his first impulse?
Tumblr media
To seize a useful resource from an alien, and use it against her will.
GG: that would be smug and arrogant and would make you a bully!!! [...] AT: yOU'RE RIGHT ABOUT ALL THAT, i'LL RESPECT YOUR WISHES, AT: oR, AT: wILL i? };) GG: nooooooooo dont dont dont dont dont GG: im serious GG: uuuuggghh i think my headache is coming back AT: i WAS jUST, AT: mAKING A JOKE, AT: sORRY, }:(
This dude cannot read a room. Truly, the anti-Terezi.
Tumblr media
Oh, leave off.
Tumblr media
AG: Next time you decide to open your heart to an alien girl…….. AG: Make sure her chat client isn't 8eing holographically projected for all to see, ok?
This exploit should apply to chat clients of any size, provided the screen is visible. Maybe John's Pesterchum Glasses were a better investment than I thought.
AG: Jade let you down too easy. She's too nice! Someone's got to tear into you for that appalling display, and once again, guess who's shoulders that falls on? AG: That's right. Vriska's, as usual.
Tavros probably does need someone to explain what he did wrong, but it should be anyone but Vriska. This is obviously just going to be more bullying, and no actual advice.
AT: i THINK SHE HAS THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF NICENESS, pERSONALLY, AT: aN AMOUNT THAT IS SOME, iNSTEAD OF, AT: nONE,
Showing backbone against Vriska, eh? Finally, a constructive use for all that confidence.
Progress is progress, even when it's just a minor clapback.
AG: Hey, I'm nice when it matters, [...]
Nope, I'm calling Vriska's bluff. What nice things has she done so far, exactly?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sure, she made Tavros the rocket chair, but only after mercilessly tormenting him for his physical condition, which she caused.
Plus, this wasn't even a real apology gift. She kept bullying him after that, and is literally doing so as we speak.
Tumblr media
I guess she also made Aradia's soulbot, as an 'apology' for murdering her with her own boyfriend. To be precise, she had Equius make it, with horrific results that she should probably have seen coming.
Tumblr media
She also thought that it would be 'nice' to tell Terezi that her blindness 'wasn't that bad'. This conversation was kind of complicated, though, and I'm not sure what her actual intention was.
Anyway, it's pretty clear that Vriska doesn't really grok what 'nice' means. She gives Tavros a rocket chair, continues to torment him, and doesn't understand the contradiction, because she doesn't think his feelings actually matter.
[...] and where it doesn't strangul8te the critical development of people I give a shit a8out, ok?
"After all, no one was ever nice to ME, and look how gr8 I turned out! When you think about it, it's actually a GOOD thing that no one ever showed me kindness! It made me strong! Don't you want to 8e stroooooooong, Pupa? ::::D"
Tumblr media
I'm reminded of this exchange from Hivebent. Kanaya recommends that Vriska practice some basic self-care, and Vriska completely flies off the handle, furious at the mere suggestion that she should be kind to herself.
Vriska thinks kindness will harm her. She refuses to accept it, and avoids showing it to anyone, which makes her remarkably consistent in her cruelty. I'm willing to bet that there's nothing she's said to Tavros that she hasn't already said to herself.

i am specifically demanding johnkat please and thank you, 69
"I hate the way he talks to you." John mumbles, around a mouthful of over-salted popcorn. He swallows noisily and settles into the couch deeper, comfortably taking up enough space that Karkat doesn't even feel like he could fit. Without making it a thing, anyway. "You're not even dating Dave, why is he trying to tell you where you should be?"
Karkat shrugs, turning the volume up pointedly. This isn't the first time his strained friendship with Dave has come up, and he's kind of fucking sick to death of it. "Watch your movie, Egbert." He shifts against the base of the couch, leaning his head on the edge of the cushion next to John's thigh.
"I just mean, like, is he gonna be this way if you do start dating someone? Dave is my best friend, but, like, you have to do what's good for yourself." He crunches loudly, over the opening dialogue to the stupid movie he demanded they watch. "It's like he's marking his territory or something."
That makes Karkat perk up, turning on his knees with a sharp glare. "What the fuck does that mean? I'm not territory. Are you calling me a barkbeast piss-post?" He slaps the remote, stopping the movie in the middle of a sentence.
"No! I'm not calling you anything, Karkat!" He spills some of the popcorn when he drops the bowl on the floor, leaning forward to be closer to eye-level. "I just mean how Dave is acting, not you. He acts like he expects you guys to get back together." John's voice is annoyingly sincere, and Karkat forces his hackles down in response.
It isn't like John is wrong. Every time Dave has been lonely in the month or so since they split, he's called Karkat. It was so much easier with trolls; sure, it was awkward for a while with Terezi and Sollux, but it was different. They never expected Karkat to be all their quads. If anything, Terezi was the one telling him to back off from trying to do it himself.
Dave wanted a human relationship, though. And, apparently, still does, which is more annoying than anything he has ever had to fucking deal with in his stupid life, including when he almost died in the game all those times.
"I don't want him not to be my friend." Karkat grits out, scrambling up onto the couch now that John's nervousness at being misunderstood has shrunk the spread of his legs to a reasonable size. John nods a little, encouraging, and Karkat sighs. "That's all. I'm just trying to be... Respectful, or whatever. It isn't like I don't want to date. Or at least get fucked."
John's ears turn red, but he nods again, and looks at the frozen screen. "That's understandable. You guys kind of... It sort of just went out, didn't it." He says, not a question.
"Yeah. It did." He looks at his phone, pinging with another message from Dave. Never demanding, never serious. Always edged with enough irony that he can talk his way out of it. That was why they didn't work. Karkat wanted him to be honest. "I miss Gamzee. I've been trying to keep Dave from freaking out so much I haven't even seen my palemate in weeks, unless it's in public, and that sucks. I don't like public affection."
Still flushed, John nods. "I mean, you should just see him. Dave is an asshole sometimes. And you're the first like, real relationship he's had, I think. Jade and Davesprite are not really the same, and even then, he was weird for a long time with her, too."
There's a stretch of silence that feels almost comfortable. The electric whine of the plasma TV rings in Karkat's ears, and he presses his foot down on one of the spilled kernels of popcorn. Not his house to clean, anyway.
Finally, he scratches his nails down his thighs, pulling at the minute ridges of his jeans. "What should I do?" It feels weird, asking John of all people for advice on anything. Especially on dating. John had never even been with anyone, as far as Karkat knew. Maybe Vriska.
"I think you should just do whatever you want to do, Karkat. I can't promise things are gonna be okay, but." He turns, finally looking at Karkat dead on again, and smiles his buck-tooth smile. "You are my friend, and I am not going to let someone be shitty to you. If I need to, I will even beat Dave up myself."
Karkat blinks. "Isn't that the kind of talk that was in the movie last time you picked? Do you think I'm your human offspring?" He doesn't sound as grumpy as he wants to.
John chuckles, flopping back onto the couch. His thigh presses against Karkat's own, densely muscled. "Obviously I don't. Weirdo. I was mostly offering so you would think I'm really manly and cool, so you would want to keep spending time with me."
Face suddenly hot, Karkat leans down to snatch the remote off the floor, and pushes play. The human Nicolas Cage starts talking again, his strangely intense monotone droning senselessly in Karkat's ears for a second. John delicately retracts into his own space again, without a word.
He hits pause. "You have to stop making the popcorn so salty. And I pick the movies twice a month." He speaks in a rush, awkward, and John turns to look at him with obvious questions. "Hold on. I'm saying, if we go out, if, then I'm setting some rules. Like don't expect anything on the first date. Which is now. I guess."
"Okay!" John grins, and bumps their shoulders together. "That's fine, Karkat. But I can take you out, too, if you want. I know you don't like PDA but we can eat somewhere together, or I could fly with you, or we could go swimming--"
The movie starts with another jarring return to the music. "Don't get excited. We're barely dating. And you haven't even beaten Dave up, so I don't count tonight after all."

TW: VRISKCOURSE IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD 2023
Feel free to ignore
Ding ding the witch is dead (the witch being vriska)
But honestly while I do agree that vriska represents Tumblr better I'm glad she lost because since I read homestuck for the first time 5 years ago I always found her kinda boring?
Like she only becomes interesting when interacting with other characters, like Terezi's whole thing with her, John/June's complicated feelings towards her, the many times she assaulted tavros and how that affected him, her relationship with Meenah (honestly I'd argue that Meenah is more interesting and spend less time with her than vriska, and she's still a dick so trust me the issue here is not unlikeability)
People act like she's the peak of unlikable female characters but she's just a popular girl that bullies others because her mom sucks, I already dealt with plenty of those IRL (especially during the time I first read HS), the machinations of her mind really aren't that complex, the only thing interesting about her is her powers.
Otherwise she's just a plot device
Basically what I'm saying is that there are unlikable female protagonists out there that are more interesting
Then again maybe her making me respond in this way is the point, maybe the point of a Tumblr woman is to make you wonder why anyone finds her interesting but I dunno I only been here for 6 years what do I know?
i mean i think that the way shes mean is why people hated her so much, cause she was mean in a way they found Too Close to real life. she wasn't unlikable the way a fictional character is SUPPOSED to be, she's unlikable the way your worst friend who ruined your life for years was, hah.
i dont really have a horse in this race as far as the Tumblr Culture goes, cause idc that much. but I do have an interesting relationship with her character so I might as well share it here.
I have particular affection towards Vriska because she reminds me A LOT of my older sister. which you might think is a bad thing and it sort of is, but its more complicated than that.
SEE my oldest sister basically had to raise all of us, on top of dealing with some weird emotional incest stuff with our mom (our mom would call her her "little husband" so it wasn't great) and worst of all she had to protect us from our oldest brother who was and still is an incredibly violent and volatile person. so she'd basically get beaten up all the time protecting us, and if my oldest brother was picking on one of us she'd antagonize him to get him to beat her up instead cause she could take it or something.
ANYWAY she's gone through a lot of trauma processing now and I love her and everything she stands for, but she was kind of a cruel kid/teenager. which makes sense, our childhood was a never ending hellscape of fighting and injuries and abuse, especially for her. So she did what she thought it would take to keep us (relatively) safe, including some rather abusive tactics to try to stop us from appearing weak, and she also lashed out cause she was like 13 raising 4 kids and constantly fighting 1 bigger kid
Anddd the thing about Vriska is that she's also a teenager and she's also been abused and she basically doesnt trust anyone else to NOT screw up (which is very much like my oldest sister too, but you cant really fault the controlling nature when everything was so high stakes hah)
soooo fsdfdsfsdfsadfds like,, my oldest sister wasn't a very good person until a bit into her later teens. So I can't really hold Vriska to like a Worst Person Ever standard because to me she doesnt represent a person who was awful to me and who I stopped being friends with or whatever. She's like a child version of my oldest sister, and that child deserved to be cared for instead of thrown into the hell that she was. I would wrap her in a blanket if I didn't think she'd stab me for it or something.
ANYWAY that's what I feel about this fictional character.
plus i love abused characters, what can I say. she was never my favorite but i did always wish the best for her hah.

(( ALSO third! If the Homestuck gals got a tour of the factory, what sorta karmic retributions would there be? I imagine Vriska would do something dumb like trying to lead the way instead of Wonka, walk off the scaffolding while bragging about not needing a guide, and then fall into a machine that turns her into sentient blueberry gum. Which Terezi then chews, fully aware of the side effects, just to fuck with Vriska.
((Naaaaah ok let's see about making a coherent tour for the beta gals, and yes anons I'm going to be lame and only focus on the girls because I'm gay, you want co-ed stuff we can talk stuff later.
So first things first you have to narrow down who is on the tour. Obviously Vriska is on the tour because she abuses her luck to get in, I feel like Terezi would also get in just to harass Vriska. I think Nepeta would also end up there though that's because she happened to someone dead with a ticket or just happens to find some trash near the forest and in it is a ticket. Last two are hard picks because I'm feeling like Feferi owns the place or has an heiress is automatically in a position of authority so I suppose that leaves Kanaya and Aradia as the last tour goers which I think makes sense!
Now I'm not going for total karmic retributions, I'm going for more of a logical "where would they fuck up" and for ease of this situation I'm just going to use the book/movie room line up.
So first one out in the candy forest room is sadly and maybe shockingly Nepeta! I 1000000% see her going full on cat LARP mode and she immediately starts to stalk and pounce through the plants. That said she probably doesn't see a drop off into the river and plunges STRAIGHT in and whoops! "Probubbly shoulda warned her aboat that but oh well!"
Next one is going to be a TURBO shock for everyone who follows this blog and pays attention to me lmao but inventing room is Terezi and it's not because of hubris and mocking Vriska about the gum being blue. It's purely from a total sensory overload. The colors, the smells, the tastes, the sounds, ALL OF IT just blinding Terezi a second time over and as such leads to her taking a sample of the wrong product and hey she was close to being blue already so it's not THAT much of shift for her!
Ok now we get to the hard part because the final 3 are where I have issues picking who gets what you know? After thinking it over though I feel like Kanaya ends here. Now I always have the HARDEST time making something kinky for this so we're not kinking it this time and the scenario plays out that Kanaya makes some dumb pun/play on words about the room and Vriska trips her over the guardrail and sends her into the chute. She's fine just dirty later and loathes Vriska just a little bit more for ruining her outfit.
Now I'm sure literally everyone is surprised I have Vriska making it this far I legit think she'd just be so bored by everything else that getting the television room would be the first thing to interest her since she could make it all about herself. You know the drill, hits the button jumps in front of the camera and ends up tiny Serket. Probably ends up working as an intern at the factory afterwards doing commercials where she poses with the candy and saves them money on doing greenscreen shit.
And we have Aradia as the winner! Honestly I had a scene where Aradia drops out in the sorting room instead of Kanaya so you could swap them and it'd both be fine. You could argue that Aradia would end up enjoying the chute and treat it like a slide cause she's a freak but whatever! Enjoy this WAY too long and overly thought out tour idea lmao.))

Im currently somewhere in the middle of Act 5 act 1 of Homestuck, and i gotta speak my truth about the trolls
Tavros is by far the bestest one, and I'm not sure my mind's changing anytime soon
His lusus is also adorable so there's that
Sollux is a nice 2nd place, tho that could change
Before reading, I would've never expected Karkat to be such a pissy little baby, but now that I rethink about it, he couldn't have been any other way, could he
Can't wait to see more of Kanaya, because her design is really pretty, and I really like that her speech is not neaely as confusing as most others (i only know her name because of rosemary fanart btw)
I dislike Vriska, she's mean and broke Tavros legs :(
(Like seriously, wth gal, why would you do that, and why was he so okay with it??)
Gamzee is just living life and speaking his truths and i respect him for it
Aradia is also very pretty, I love her curled horns. Also, her sylladex made me laugh out loud. She's one spooky posessed witch.
Terezi..... I'm not sure how to feel about her. She's pretty cool sometimes, but other times she just reaaaaally creeps me out
I don't care for Nepeta particularly yet, but she seems nice enough for now
This killed me tho
Tumblr media
I have yet to see anything about Pisces, Aquarium and Sagittarius, but color me intrigued
It's hard for me to sort out their relationships with eachother. At first I assumed they'd all have this kind of "best friends/siblings" type of bond, but now I'm starting to rethink that. It's pretry cool that they all seem to have their own thing going on. Makes them seem a lot real-er
Anyway, gonna go keep reading this thing. Wish me luck

who hogs the duvet
its dirk. he grew up in a post apocalyptic world where the ice caps melted in texas the man is used to heat. +++ hes autistic and needs the pressure there are so many blankets john is dying
who texts/rings to check how their day is going
"check how their day is going" might be a generous term for the way dirk spams john with stream of consciousness shit throughout the day. john is the one who actually calls to check in though
who’s the most creative when it comes to gifts
dirk. he gets deep in the shit and goes super over the top about it everything is handmade and Too Much. john is also very creative dont get me wrong its just hard to compete with the man who builds robots for people
who gets up first in the morning
dirk because hes an insomniac and johns got that good depression sleeping in
who suggests new things in bed
dirk lol hes fucking gross
who cries at movies
we all know its john the man cries at con air
who gives unprompted massages
john. hes fidgety and it gives his hands something to do and dirk really needs it and john loves doing things for him
who fusses over the other when they’re sick
john does the whole soup in bed sweet thing so its him dirk just gets stressed and uncomfortable with all the snotty tissues
who gets jealous easiest
its dirk. dirks so possessive its kind of bad but john also gets jealous so it just sort of works for them
who has the most embarrassing taste in music
dirk bc hes a hipster and only listens to the most niche indie shit ever but dirk would say its john bc john doesnt have a good ear for music and will listen to anything (read: crap pop junk, bad "indie" bands, etc)
who collects something unusual
dirk and his puppets ugh
who takes the longest to get ready
dirk. his hair. i hate it. but also he takes so much pride in his appearance he takes forever to pick out an outfit AND THEN IT LOOKS UGGO ANYWAY
who is the most tidy and organized
john, easy. john keeps things ship shape and dirk makes messes on top of messes bc he gets distracted
who gets most excited about the holidays
dirk feels disconnected from holidays bc he wasnt a part of society for so long and john feels disconnected from holidays bc of depression. but ultimately john wins out ig
who is the big spoon/little spoon
john likes to be the big spoon and crush dirk
who gets most competitive when playing games and/or sports
dirk has problems. (he also loses a lot.)
who starts the most arguments
dirk hes self destructive and gets hung up on dumb petty shit but also sometimes john says something and its like arguing with a brick wall where dirks not getting its a joke and feels like he hAS to correct john and theyre just not understanding what the other means
who suggests that they buy a pet
honestly? dirk. john doesnt trust himself enough to take care of a pet and dirk decides a cat would be a good idea (it is. john does better when hes taking care of other people)
what couple traditions they have
depression naps
what tv shows they watch together
dirk barely tolerates johns abominable taste and they dont make it through that many
what other couple they hang out with
i think vriska and terezi is funny. probably also whoever dave and roxy are with
how they spend time together as a couple
john likes spoiling dirk and going on dates bc dirk likes being pampered but dirk likes staying home with john and taking self care days because john needs the rest and company sometimes
who made the first move
dirk, probably. or at least tried to
who brings flowers home
john, definitely
who is the best cook
100% john

I’ve said before that the worst thing a ship can be is boring and man does davejade fit that bill for me. It’s cute and right up until cascade, I totally get it to an extent. But the events post scratch really change both Dave and Jade in ways that make a relationship between them feel regressive. By this, I mean that the ship feels to me like it only makes sense at certain points in the narrative, but not at the end when the characters have drastically changed from how they once were. With the context of Dave’s conversation with dirk, his previous affinity for Jade is cast in a new light. Did Dave ever really have feelings for Jade or did he act as though he did because he felt he was supposed? Or maybe his confusion about his sexuality made it difficult for him to sort out romantic and platonic feelings for the girls in his life. That, I would argue, seems to be what happened between him and Terezi. With the addition of Vriska to the meteor crew, their relationship seems to have immediately settled into something purely platonic. Likewise, Dave seems particularly worried about coming out to John, while giving Jade no real consideration. Further, Jade’s relationship with everyone is a bit strained by the end because of how much time she’s spent alone. There’s a distance there that Dave doesn’t express an interest in recrossing. This is an important aspect of Jade’s character. She’s lonely, isolated, and distant. Her arc, such as it is, requires her to cope with this loneliness in whatever ways she can. Rather than have her start of despondent about her situation, hers is a story about keeping her head above water. In the pre-retcon timeline, her relationship with Davesprite falls apart while in the post retcon one, she is left completely alone. Through it all, her struggle is to maintain a positive attitude about things. By the end, this is made pretty explicit by alternate Calliope. Her pre-scratch relationship with Dave is one way she manages to keep herself afloat. However, the events that follow the scratch are such are bound to forever alter what that relationship could mean, did mean, and will mean in the future. As it stands, by the end of the comic, I’m just not convinced that Jade feels any desire to rekindle whatever may have been there, even if Dave was willing to.
Davepeta makes a much more interesting ship partner insofar as they actually express some interest in Jade. They have an unresolved romantic history together. On their part, Davepeta ended things because they felt insecure about not being ‘real.’ But as Davepeta, they’ve become something new and wholly original. Davesprite’s insecurities are washed away by the creation of a gestalt little weirdo. Likewise, Jade never got to have a relationship with Davesprite, so Davepeta presents an opportunity. Beyond that, there is, of course, also the dark horse of Jade ships and a personal favourite of mine: vrisjade. While davejade strikes me as regressive in the sense that it seems to send the characters back to the state they were in pre-scratch, vrisjade is as progressive as it gets. While they have little canonical interaction, they have overlapping thematic elements / histories and personalities that contrast in ways that are conducive to interesting story telling. Vrisjade requires a Vriska and a Jade who have experienced the entire narrative to make any amount of sense, hence it is progressive where davejade is regressive.
On the Dave side, I don’t really know. Davekat is a classic and makes just a lot of sense. Davejohn is also kinda boring insofar as John is, uh, kinda boring? They make good friends, but I’m not sure there’s enough there to make for interesting romantic tension, ya know? Plus, I think it kinda undercuts John’s role as friendleader. Like, his whole deal is being a good goddamn friend. The fact that no one calls him a pale slut during the course of the comic is beyond me because he absolutely is. Also, I enjoy that Davekat parallels Rosemary insofar as the Strilonde siblings having a thing for being gay with quirked up aliens. It’s cute and the contrast between them really highlights how their respective partnerships really bring out the best of everyone involved. Davekat is a sort of comfortable equilibrium for Dave and Karkat that represents the end state of their respective character development through the narrative in the same way that Rosemary does for Kanaya and Rose.
I hope I’ve made it clear that my thoughts on davejade aren’t, like, extremely negative. Rather, I just don’t quite get it? A good ship, in my subjective opinion, should both be interesting and faithful to the characters it depicts. That isn’t to say it needs to be faithful to the canon of events they experience, but rather that it should be faithful to the kind of people they are. And I just don’t see that with davejade in the same way I do with other ships. For better of for worse, shipping is an exercise in hermeneutics. We can use it to hone our skills as analytical thinkers, which is pretty neat! However, that requires a very conscious and attentive application of our analytical faculties to the text at hand. Davejade strikes me as a ship that is less predicated on this sort of hermeneutical exercise and more on, for lack of a better word, vibes. And there’s nothing wrong with a vibes based ship! I just can’t get behind it unless beneath the vibes there are some solid textual reasons for that ship to make sense (See: Shenlan from Genshin, an all time favourite of mine which is grounded purely in overlapping themes and contrasting personalities like vrisjade). But since none of this matters, it all sort of just comes out in the wash.

New to the fandom, Could you explain June? 💯 Love and support her. But homestuck 2 doesn't have her and I'm just confused?
June Egbert precedes the concept of homestuck^2! I’ve seen a lot of people be confused about this because they weren’t active on the fandom at the time the epilogues dropped, when reading her as a trans woman got a lot of discussion going and eventually lead to multiple confirmations.
So here’s an attempt at contextualization:
Throughout Homestuck, a few key ideas about Egbert’s identity and motivation to push forward with her hero’s journey are dropped like breadcrumbs. She’s meant to play the default straight-man protagonist. Her defining traits are ridiculously… generic, when compared to how all the other kids present themselves and stick to exaggerated bits. She’s a perfectly normal, regular suburban kid with normal, suburban issues.
She may not leave her room a whole lot. She may not have a lot of real life friends in the neighborhood. She holds a comical irritation for the concept of birthdays, even though her father is extremely supportive, and is delighted to see his son grow up nice and healthy. There’s no reason for her to be so irrationally upset at cakes and gifts, and that’s what makes the setup funny! June doesn’t even know why she’s annoyed with half of the things that annoy her, what the heck.
But under all that playing around there is a sense that her life is so normal, so blasé, so unexciting and limiting and hollow and fake that she’d give anything to not be herself, even if only for ten minutes. This goes way, way back. It’s why June needs SBURB to happen.
Tumblr media
June lives as though her life hasn’t started yet. She’s stuck in the Tutorial stage. I would argue while most kids (and trolls) play SBURB to escape a shitty environment or the end of the world as they know it, June plays for a simpler reason: She needs to escape herself, and she needs to do it before it is too late.
Being thirteen means crossing the homeric abyss between being a child with no care for the world sporting a generic hand-me-down identity and becoming a Teen (capital T) who needs to figure out how to cope with atrocious bodily changes while building the adult they’re meant to be AND deciding what the fuck they want out of life, and how they’re going to work to get it, forever and ever.
When you’re trans, and you don’t yet know you’re trans (or that this is a thing you’re even ALLOWED to be) the above feels a lot like serving a life sentence for an intangible crime.
You know what you’re supposed to do. You’ve seen it on tv, you’ve heard it from your dad, you know what are the normal trials and tribulations. You know you'll grow a few pimples and stubble and you'll need to learn how to shave, obviously, because it's basically a tradition in your family, and no one is really happy to be a teen. You know at some point you'll find a nice girl and you'll grow a hat out of your skull and then you will have to pay taxes and maybe you will have a baby daughter? You'd like it to be a daughter for no particular reason. And when you get a daughter you're going to name her Casey and she's going to be adorable and this is something you've dedicated a lot of thought to. Maybe its because you thought Nic Cage looked really cool with those long flowing locks in con air, the movie who featured a trans woman as a minor character for a few minutes (and she gets quite a bit of compliments, regardless of how the movie has aged), and he had a really exciting life, but goddamn did he love his daughter. There is no purer love than the bond between a father and his daughter.
This absolutely has nothing to do with your father and you, or how you hold no excitement for becoming an adult man, or how your father's excitement for you becoming an adult man in your stead feels a little stifling.
Tumblr media
But i digress.
June spends her time on SBURB mostly hassling karkat, and readily following the instructions of zany, dangerous, COOL girls that seem to know what they're doing. June lets Terezi lead her to certain death without blinking. June lets Vriska dress her up as soon as opportunity presents itself. June thinks its really funny to trick this troll Who Types Really Oddly into believing she's Rose, and also into believing that she's a very silly girl. You may even say Homestuck employs a few of jokes pertaining to how her name looks like EGG !
Tumblr media Tumblr media
June has a ball playing this game until it starts to get shitty. She's never able to mend her relationship with her dad, as he's one of the first causalities. She has to spend a lot of time waiting around with jade on a ship until things get cool and exciting again, but she never stops growing during those three years. Its fine, though, because there's always more things to be done and more people to fight.
Until there aren't, and they make a new earth, and while everyone cheers and claps for the birth of a new planet June realizes all her excuses are over. Her friends begin to grow up. Rose gets married. Jade is living her best life. Dave has a not-boyfriend glued to his hip. Jane has a job. Jake is on TV for some reason. June doesn't want to leave home. June's birthday is around the corner again. Here come all the congratulations for becoming a strong lad for yet another year! Vriska is gone. Terezi is gone. SBURB is over. Wacky hijinks have been swapped for real-ass, boring-ass Regular life. We watch her unsuccessfully chase after the glory of days gone by when Rose presents her the possibility of going back into the game, when things were cool and mattered, or her flimsy decision to settle down with a nice girl she hasn’t really made an effort to know and become a father and be absolutely miserable for four decades as she asserts nothing is real, not anymore, and this is just how it is.
Depersonalization, depression and general apathy towards the world are all pronounced aspects of dysphoria that seem like unrelated incidents for someone who hasn't came out yet. June's trainwreck of a life post-game, specially her feeling of hollowness and chasing after anything that could fill it struck a chord with trans readers who left the epilogues to read HS again and discovered this has always sort of been here. June being a trans woman who doesn't have the proper vocabulary to express she is a trans woman makes a lot of earlier bits from the comic click into place, now in a broader context. We settled in the name "June" because it's what she imagines Vriska is calling her at some point, amid laughs, but even that was discussed for a lengthy period last year. What would she want to be called, what are possible tags for this, etc. But it was mostly for fun and games, because the prospect of the protagonist of a 10 year old beloved cult series being ACTUALLY confirmed as a trans woman just wasn't something that was done.
Until word got around to Andrew Hussie and he was reportedly so pleased with this interpretation of events he’d be making references to it, and some time later, a box of toblerones was left in a cave as a gift for fans to find. The first person to find a toblerone thought it would be funny to dedicate it to June, because now she was an ongoing reference that was fun to make. Instead of it ending there, Hussie logs on twitter for the first time in a long while to say 'Oh yeah, i'll make it happen' and that's when the whole thing exploded. I have a post detailing this made a year ago (with pictures!) so i won't keep you here.
In the year since, June has been vaguely alluded to in Pesterquest (in jade's end card, she's having her nails painted by rose.) Has been widely adopted by the community, those making their own fanventures and continuations, and the team behind Homestuck^2. In every way that matters, she's already thriving within the community that brought her to light a year ago. But her coming out in canon is something that will take time and a proper narrative arc to happen, one that is still being set up. We know it'll come eventually, the only question is “how”.
Not that the wind waits for anyone.

EB: i'm sorry karkat, i didn't realize we screwed up so bad. CG: ALRIGHT WELL CG: I WASN'T EXPECTING YOU TO MAN UP AND APOLOGIZE FOR IT, SO OK I'LL GIVE YOU CREDIT FOR THAT. [...] EB: i just feel kind of bad i fell asleep, i don't know what came over me. [...] CG: HEY, INOPPORTUNE NAPS HAPPEN IN THIS GAME.
I love that even at this early stage, Karkat keeps forgetting that he's supposed to be 'mad' at John.
CG: I MANAGED TO STAY AWAKE FOR SEVERAL WEEKS STRAIGHT, I DIDN'T WANT TO LET MY GUARD DOWN FOR A SECOND. [...] CG: AFTER IT WAS ALL OVER, AND WE RETREATED IN FAILURE CG: I FOOLISHLY DID. CG: AND THAT'S WHEN I SAW HIM. [...] CG: JACK.
Poor Karkat probably thought he was back from Alternia with a vengeance - which would be doubly painful, since Karkat liked Jack, and was completely against Exiling him.
CG: HE WAS WEARING A RING I DIDN'T RECOGNIZE, CERTAINLY NOT ONE BELONGING TO OUR QUEENS. [...] CG: HE WORE IT ON HIS ONE HAND, WHICH WAS COVERED IN OUR MUTANT BLOOD.
If Jack had got that blood from the troll session, we'd have a pretty good idea who it belonged to.
Tumblr media
But Jack arrived with that blood. It came from the human session, and could have belonged to anyone there.
The narrative is giving it a lot of focus, though - even in Jade: Enter, the camera kept lingering on Jack's arm. This is 'important' blood, which will be shed in a pivotal moment later on.
Tumblr media
Move over, Bilious Slick - there's a new god in these parts.
CG: I PRETTY QUICKLY DETERMINED THAT HE WAS FROM YOUR SESSION, NOT OURS. [...] CG: AND I WAS SORT OF RELIEVED CG: RELIEVED BUT ALSO ENRAGED CG: I'M SURE YOU KNOW THE FEELING. [...] EB: not really.
This is how you can tell John's not a programmer yet.
Get back to me when you've been debugging for two hours, and you realize you missed a free(). Then you'll know exactly what Karkat is feeling.
CG: I'VE GOT TO REWIND THE TAPE ON THIS CLUSTERFUCK AND FIGURE OUT WHAT WENT WRONG. EB: yeah, i should get going too. EB: my friend is pestering me, and i doubt she likes to be kept waiting. EB: (she is sort of the bossy type!) CG: WHY WOULD I CARE ABOUT YOUR DUMB HUMAN FRIEND AND HER PETULANT, MEANINGLESS DEMANDS.
'What went wrong' is the girl who's messaging John right now.
I cannot wait for Karkat to figure out who actually caused the Mistake, and confront Vriska directly. It'll be cathartic, I think, for his rage to be directed to someone who's deliberately responsible for their problems.
Karkat is no match for Vriska, of course - but he doesn't necessarily have to be. He's a leader, and once he starts yelling about who actually got them trapped in the Veil, the other trolls are sure to take his side, no matter how annoying he is.
Vriska is extremely resourceful, but if Karkat rallies all the surviving trolls against her, her victory is far from guaranteed. She'll be up against Terezi, Kanaya and Sollux - not to mention Feferi, who's recently proven she's not as much of a pushover as you'd expect.
This is all hypothetical, of course. Before we can talk about Vriska's plans, we need to understand what the fuck she's playing at here. It's possible that this was ultimately for everyone's benefit - but I think it's more likely an act of hubris. Vriska seems bent on fighting Jack directly, so I think she's messing with his timeline to make him vulnerable in some way. That's not how the Alpha works, Vriska!

for the ship game...vrizrezi hawke/anders and ummmm kaladin/moash 👽
Vrisrezi: Do not ship
I do not like Vrisrezi because interactions with Vriska make Terezi much more boring, and Vriska isn't particularly oriented towards Terezi either. The character I wanted to see Vriska grow and change alongside with was Tavros. They had narrative resonance and something sort of resembling a coherent parallel arc. Vriska and Terezi are more of an informed-attribute Ultimate Rivalry than a dynamic I really felt invested in. Somehow, these characters are less than the sum of their parts; they do not contribute meaningfully to one another's arcs in ways that are good rather than bad.
I could easily have liked this ship. I have nothing against it in principle. I just don't think what was presented in the story made a compelling case for them, and I didn't ever read any fanfiction.
I enjoy the concept of this ship more if it's in the context of a fucked up FLARP polycule with Aradia and Tavros also involved. That shit is great. I also do strongly prefer it to either Dave/Terezi or John/Vriska, and it's probably one of the best Vriska ships out there.
Hawke/Anders: Do not ship
This one I actually do actively hate and will not engage with fan content for.
Partly it's that I think that the DA2 story works better without any Hawke/Companion romance. Hawke is most interesting to me as an aggregator of baffling ruffians rather than someone who is actually One of the ruffians. Because Hawke is boring. They're a boring cookie cutter protagonist who I care for only as a plot device and narrative tool.
But I dislike Hawke/Anders especially because a romance arc would be a terrible decision for Anders' story. The whole Kirkwall period is things getting worse and worse for Anders and culminating with a suicidal act of mass violence. There is no way to jam a healthy relationship into that character arc, not even getting into the actual in-game details of their romantic interactions.
Now, an unhealthy relationship? Yes! Absolutely! I can read Hawke/Anders as abusive, mutually toxic, or otherwise some kind of ill-advised train wreck which ultimately is only a brief stop along a larger story about something else. But hardly anybody writes that. Everybody wants to project their protective poor little meow meow feelings onto Hawke and have them Take Care of poor widdle Anders who is so sad and so wet. And I don't truck with that. Hawke is entirely the wrong character for this formula and I cannot enjoy it.
What would have made me like it? Idk, if Anders' entire character arc was completely different.
What I'll say for it is that I do think it's fantastic as a toxic trainwreck nightmare story and I actually love shitty evil rivalmance Hawkes who make Anders' life worse.
Kalmoash: Literally have absolutely no idea if I ship or not. Like I fucking guess?
I think I only like the made up fandom version of this ship. But when I remember their actual canonical interactions I just feel sort of icky.
Moash is just so...look, I love Moash. He sucks, and I love that for him! Here is a character so absolutely, triumphantly responsible for his own suffering, so clearly being damned by his own basic character flaws, that it's fucking excruciating to watch. It's fantastic. What fertile ground for a redemption arc! Moash is a guy who hit rock bottom and picked up a shovel. He did this all to himself, and boy howdy does it compel me.
But wow, he sucks. And he's not being written with compassion by an author who ultimately likes him and his bullshit. He's being written by an author who has nothing nice to say about him at all. My enjoyment of this character is not supported by the text, because the text is frankly not that deep. The text is all there on the surface and it doesn't leave much room for interpretation.
So I enjoy pretending that they dated during WoR, but like their close friendship is moooostly an informed attribute. Which is a real shame, because it limits the emotional impact of the betrayal and the emotional impact of any possible future redemption arc.
Anyway yeah I guess I do ship it because if I see a picture of them kissing I'm hitting reblog.

okay humanstuck thoughts under the cut
i owe a lot of this to @/rhythmic-idealist's kankri/vantasposting bc holy shit theyve got such a big brain (ill link to their individual posts when im on desktop since im using this to keep all my thoughts straight and i agree with most of what they say wholeheartedly)
general status quo stuff:
signless works in an extremely demanding career involving helping others (i'm leaning towards an attorney who works with organizations and does pro bono work), and is also extensively involved in social justice work outside of his job... he is very rarely home
he loves and cares for his children deeply and tries to express it whenever they're face to face, but the couch in his cramped and messy office has seen far too much use over the years for him to have been able to say it enough
his habits of working himself to the point of exhaustion are handily passed down to his kids btw
the kids had to grow up quickly because signless was out of the house so often and so consistently—kankri, who was already pretty high-strung, has to learn to take care of himself and karkat
they grow up near ms firuzeh maryam, who's their pseudoaunt/grandma (she took in a nine year old kavana vantas when she was about twenty), but they just call her ms rosa
they spent a lot of time in the maryam house growing up, with miss rosa's two nieces. porrim is a year older than kankri, while kanaya and karkat are the same age
kankri grows kinda sensitive to people trying to mother him since it rubs against the notion that he's the "adult of the house" and that he can take care of himself and karkat just fine
(and it also kinda underlines the fact that kankri has no idea what he's doing at the best of times)
and ironically enough, kankri becomes overbearing and naggy towards karkat in his own right, which forestalls them becoming close in any brotherly sort of way
they grow up really just... unable to communicate with one another clearly
karkat develops his ornery exterior in response to kankri's constant stream of opinions and frantic attempts at making up for the presence of a guardian in the house
i think there would actually be some really interesting parallels with rose in this au.. maybe i'm drawing from my own experiences as well but i think he'd begin to assume that every time his brother opens his mouth, he's going to criticize karkat
but instead of reacting like rose with the "making yourself more of a puzzle"/passive aggressive stuff, he gets a more defensive/hackles raised/"argue with you before you can argue with me" approach
and the thing is that they do love each other and would take a bullet for the other etc etc etc.. but they don't know how to express it because they've fallen into these shitty patterns
and it really doesn't help that kankri has grown somewhat resentful of signless over the years... that mix of resentment and fear and love gets more extreme and more polar every time signless gets injured during a political demonstration
i think kankri and signless would also be slightly closer than karkat and signless, as signless' job really only started to ramp up when karkat was less than years old and kankri was in his early double digits
kankri autistic btw its word of god (i am god)
karkat has a pet crab. its name is also karkat. he vents his frustrations to it.
i feel like the vantases exemplify both the best and worst parts of their aspects with one another as well... the strength of their bonds keeps them together and grounded, but TOO grounded. [insert Blood rant here]
the Blood rant:
i define Blood as bonds, responsibility, and the "core". if Life is the fertile soil and everything living on a planet's surface, then Blood is the gravitational core of the planet keeping everything together
i also think Blood, Heart, & Mind work in tandem to define a person just as blood serves to connect the pieces of the human body... Heart is the soul and the self, Mind is the application of one's self through active choices (agency), while Blood defines both the self and the choices one makes in greater detail [and, as an aside, Life provides the physical spark of life needed to keep the heart pumping blood]
OKAY wow that got tangential anyways
SO BASICALLY! too much Blood makes you stagnate, so for example:
kankri is split between staying home with karkat or going to college across the country and being truly unbound for the first time in years
another crisis of Blood: signless is caught between his empathy and responsibility to the whole world and his responsibility to his own children
okay so here's more status quo stuff:
the maryam and vantas kids grow up together and its hilarious because you'll see them all together and its just like (girlboss) (girlboss) (physical manlet) (emotional manlet)
the maryam girls are actually miss rosa's nieces but she took them in when they were both pretty young
the pyropes know the vantases well enough considering pyrope senior and sign have known one another from their respective legal practices for years, but they live on the other side of town
the leijons lived in town when kankri and meulin were very young, but they moved and travelled for a long time before coming back and reestablishing their roots
the captors (psii being one of sign's oldest and closest friends) move into town with the peixes family pretty early on though
the condesce is.. a horrible spouse and guardian, to put it plainly. she's very emotionally manipulative and isn't averse to smacking people around, including her own family. she moves herself and her perfect little family into town so she can properly oversee a new business venture close by
feferi is one of the best young swimmers in the country and has a pretty good shot of getting onto the olympic team.. a lot of this drive to be perfect and to be better results from the condesce's unrelenting pressure and thinly veiled resentment throughout her whole life
so yeah psii, )(ic, feferi, and sollux all live together and it's really not great for anyone involved. (meenah ran away years ago, and crashed on aranea's couch for a pretty long while—mituna moved out with latula for college before psii and the condesce got married)
it gets bad to the point of sollux staying with the maryams for two months while the adults try to sort out that absolute clusterfuck and get the divorce proceedings going (meenah finally convinces feferi to get out and come stay with her and aranea for the duration as well)
in terms of relationships i think latula and porrim were really really close in high school, and probably had some kind of unacknowledged thing going on for a while that never actually turned into anything because latula and mituna were going steady
kankri has had a crush on latula for years but never acted on it for similar reasons
meenah still carries a lot of that give no fucks attitude (it's developed moreso as a defense mechanism here) and can't understand why feferi refuses to leave the condesce with her
okay back to VANTAS MANPAIN i also think that karkat feels the weight of a lot of expectations on his shoulders as well
he feels responsible to live up to the example his dad and his brother set, even if it's to his own detriment—and kankri's oblivious rambling about his grades and his teachers and all his clubs certainly aren't helping the matter
kankri is one of those overinvolved kids taking a million AP's while simultaneously shitting on the collegeboard at every single step
hes this super overachiever anal retentive perfectionist type dude and (just as karkat preemptively criticizes others to forestall their criticisms of him only to harshly criticize himself) kankri subconsciously holds the people around him to the same expectations he holds for himself
so karkat also develops this sense of lacking which, in combination with everything else, culminates in self loathing and thinking he has to solve everyone else's problems and getting horribly mad at himself for every little mistake
GOD i have a lot more but lemme post this before i accidentally close out of the app and lose it all
more little details:
vriska's mom and terezi's mom HATE each other like HATE HATE HATE one another it's so bad
karkat wrote a ten page review of my immortal in middle school
jade is one of nepeta's best online friends
sollux can't raise one eyebrow at a time.. karkat gives him so much grief about it
the vantases eat a lot of shitty renditions of persian dishes until karkat learns to cook because literally the only person in the world with a CHANCE of getting KANKRI VANTAS to make an EDIBLE DISH is miss rosa
kanaya is really good at persian dance too but is VERY VERY embarassed to perform in front of people.. however porrim definitely is not
karkat has insomnia while kankri just stays up stupidly late for assignments that really shouldnt be taken that seriously.. but they both have the same rumination/sleep anxiety thing where your brain goes insane with horrible and depressing scenarios as you try to sleep
and more ideas that i thought were interesting but idk how to fit in the context of this au:
signless and disciple getting married pretty late in life after having been in love for years, the vantases move in with the leijons and karkat suddenly has two sisters
nepeta and karkat are both juniors at this point, meulin is probably in her third year at a local college nearby while kankri is about to start his second year at a university pretty far away
the kids in general honestly but ill figure it out
more random hcs this time with kids:
kanaya and rose get into a flame war online that gradually settles into elaborate courtship rituals
also nepeta + jade online besties
also bec can inexplicably still teleport
the first sbahj movie comes out and the next six months of dave strider junior's high school career are absolute hell
actually hc that dave senior goes by d strider professionally. the d stands for a lot of things
aradia and dave frequent a lot of the same forums but never end up really interacting
meanwhile karkat and john frequent a lot of the same forums and DEFINITELY end up interacting. this turns into grudging (at least on karkat's part) friendship after they find themselves fighting for their lives defending an objectively shitty movie together on the same thread

Seers & Mages
Good lord- These are two long posts from Magua-Vida and an anon about Mages and Seers. Y’all really like long talks about this stuff huh? @.@
Magua-Vida:
For that Seer VS Mage ask,
Seers seem more prone to look for outside confirmation for the knowledge that they seek like citations for a thesis while Mages defer confidently to their own acute judgment more often. This isn’t a hard rule, though. They’re tendencies or leanings.
It’s partly instinctual for Mages as well as relying on their own experiences and direct observation. Sollux is the Cassandra. Nobody listened to his predictions most of the time because, to them, he sounds like he’s constantly bemoaning how pointless a lot of their actions are. And to a degree, he’s right. But, he didn’t make the greatest success of his time by serving as the equivalent of a Doomsday Weather Forecast.
Tumblr media
He had to act on his knowledge himself. His actions served for the best of everyone still alive he cared for, but he’s also tired of all the murderstuck and plot, so he decided to join in with Aradia and hopped off the meteor adventure despite Karkat’s request that he stay. Meulin is also similar. It’s never revealed how she came to suddenly know that Meenah may have red feelings for Karkat. Might be gossip travelling fast. Either way, she just excitedly purrclaims that she “JUST KNOW[S] IT”. Even when Meenah is getting uncomfortable with her shipping talk, Meulin insists even when Lord English is out there about to go perma-kill a lot of ghosts that may include her. She also gives Horuss *very* poor advice as a moirail- telling him to smile despite not feeling happy and starting a relationship with him in the first place for a ridiculous reason of seeing their dancestors being moirails.
Mages tend to do better by acting on their vision themselves, as long as they’re not putting words in the wrong people’s mouths. They are doers as much as dreamers who don’t need much prompting from others to act on their wisdom for a better world.
Tumblr media
Seers are more often the type to look at other people to reach their own conclusions- sort of like how Rose continues to look for meaning by parsing through what she thinks SBURB is throwing at her. Seers are the mission control of the group. Their role is to guide other people through, toward, or away from their aspects. This is one of the most explored classes in the comic, so this part is longer since we have more examples Anyhow…
It’s sort of like comparing how Rose & Terezi are usually good at directing other people, but not much when it comes to themselves. Rose is relied on by her group, especially Kanaya, as a source of reliable information- data that she dug up to guide her pupils to victory. However, she tried to look for any hidden morals to the story and struggles with not being able to when there’s no signal from anywhere that indicates “hey, this is the ultimate reveal that you’re supposed to learn about”. Oh, and Doc Scratch manipulated her by dangling iffy info in front of her nose like a kitty treat with a helping of non-answers, omission, and misdirection. Oh, and she and a fellow Seer got drunk for a period of time. Perhaps… it’s better that she looks for her own meaning or make her own.
Terezi is known for being good at being perceptive and manipulative. Even Karkat tells Vriska that. She dissects how other people think so, to summarize her words, they won’t end doing something stupid and irrational in the chaos. But, she’s also highly dependent on others’ input. Her self-esteem issues, romantic attachment to the wrong people, and even her blind justice, are all strongly connected to external sources, but also her own poor choices.
Kankri, like Meulin, is a more negative showcase of a Visionary. He aims for his group to be more sensible as a community by teaching them to be extremely sensitive to trigger warnings by scolding and preaching to those who violate his gospel. His stubbornness and trigger-happy lessons end in him failing to lead the Alpha Trolls, similar to Meulin’s insistence in making her ships sail in sweet seas. His Alternia self is a more positive Prophet, at least. One of his m9n9- I mean, dial9gues include him trying to look for a fault in his methods (and of course he never sees any). It’s like any teacher trying to see a flaw in his syllabus.
Seers do better by directing and guiding other people, but also need to reexamine their gathered research and not be too reliant on dubious sources, lest their worldviews and sense of self would be easily shattered.
To summarize,
Class:Source of Knowledge:Action
Mages:Internal:Act on Their Knowledge Themselves
Seers:External:Guides Others
Again, these are just overgeneralized wording. There are times when Seers act themselves like Rose destroying LOLAR ruins to find secrets and Terezi rigging the bet for Vriska’s fate as much as there are a couple Mages that guide and teach others to follow their ideals. It’s how often they do and where they conduct their understanding that set them apart. If anyone has anything to add or construe, feel free to do so.
Of course, both classes can be blinded in different ways. Blind Prophets and all. But that’s a different topic for another time.
Anon:
For me, the difference between mages and seers are that mages tend to act more subconsciously while seers tend to act more consciously. Mages are based more on understanding while seers are more on knowing. Mages experience their aspect through different means and because of that, it gives them an understanding of it. Due to the experiences they accumulated, they act subconsciously, not needing to take time to consciously think because they act more on the subconsacious thoughts that they already have which allows them to constantly be in motion during a predicament, making them passive thinkers but an active class; on the other hand, seers are more active with their thoughts despite being a passive class. Because of their ability to see with their aspect, they tend to know more than to understand. Like, they may know exactly what happened but they don't immediately know why it happened. They tend to take their time to consciously think of the situation they are presented while mages understand the situation because of the countless experiences they have with their aspect, leading to an immediate subconscious conlusion based on their understanding (Basically, seers are more on the 'what' and mages are more on the 'why'). With the knowledge of seers and them being a passive class, they tend to guide people with their aspect while mages are more solitary and independent because they have their own understanding of what they should do. Of course, there are times when mages can act seer-y and seers can act more mage-y but that is circumstantial. Mages can also guide people with their understanding of their aspect and seers can also be solitary. To me, I believe that all of us have a primary class, a secondary class, etc. So based on the other classes that someone may be leaning towards to, that person being either a mage or a seer can be affected by this factor. Do know that I only described mages and seers as pure classes without having any mixture of any of the other classes so it's fine to not feel a complete relation to these classes if anyone is a primary mage/seer because their secondary and other classes they lean toward to may affect how they act.

The Cancer King's Court ~ The Mourning Mother
Kanaya Maryam/The Mourning Mother
This Kanaya got her happy ending.
She made it to Earth C. She married the woman she loved, started a functioning moralliegence with Vriska now that she’s genuinely interested in bettering herself, and set up a peaceful little home in the suburbs. She got John to do her a favor and take her to a God-Tier bed. No one knows for sure how long Rainbow drinkers live and she wants to spare Rose the heartache.
After a few years of being happily married, the couple decides they want a baby, so they adopt a beautiful baby girl. With Rose’s help, Kanaya makes her way through this strange thing humans call motherhood.
Young Stacey Maryam-Lalonde gives her poor mothers many scares growing up. Rose took a photo for all of then.
Rose gave her an eldritch tome when she was five. She ended up summoning a horde of the undead and Kanaya had to cut down hordes of zombies at three am. Rose agreed to wait until she’s older to give the book back.
At age eight, Stacey convinced her teacher to read The Call of Cthulhu to the class. She got suspended. Rose gave her daughter a lecture, even if she was a little bit proud.
At age ten, Stacey met her first bullies. That was the day everyone at school learned that she had a scary vampire goddess for a mother. Her bullies would never forget.
“My dear, are you certain that you didn’t go overboard?”
“You Would’ve Done The Exact Same Thing.”
“…Touche.”
At age twelve, she had to spend the week at her Uncles John and Karkat’s house. John enlisted her to help him prank Karkat. The resulting prank war burnt the house down and the two had to stay at the Maryam-Lalonde household for the week. How those two made it to adulthood, neither Rose nor Kanaya would never know.
At seventeen, Stacey graduate from High School on the high honor roll. During there ceremony, Kanaya whispered to Rose, “This Is The Best Gift You’ve Ever Given Me.” They cried. A lot.
Then cane Stacey’s eighteenth birthday.
It was a camping trip. Jade had nanaged to get Stacey interested in outdoor exploration, so she took her truck and brought her friends out into the forest. Kanaya wanted to chaperone, but Stacey insisted she could handle herself.
“Don’t You Summon The Undead Again Young Lady.”
“Moooom, I was three! I’ll be fine.”
“I Know, I Know. …I’m So Proud Of You.”
While exploring, Stacey discovered a fridge, covered in chains a locked shut.
…Then she discovered the troll inside.
It took three weeks for them to find the bodies.
Rose and Kanaya were never the same after their loss. Their friends did all they could. They paid for the funeral, offered their condolences, checked up on them whenever they could find time. Vriska moved in just to help Kanaya keep her head up. She did everything she could to be there for her moirail, even if she didn’t fully understand this motherhood thing. Even if she didn’t fully understand what Kanaya lost.
Rose turned to drinking, and that was the beginning of the end. After a painful, gradual decline, Rose and Kanaya agreed to separate until Rose can get her addiction sorted out. As Rose leaves her wedding ring on the table, Kanaya has one last thing to say.
“No Matter How Long It Takes, I’ll Wait For You. Because, No Matter What Happens, You’re The Woman I Fell In Love With.”
When the authorities reveal they have a lead on Gamzee, Kanaya decides to take her grief out on him. Vriska tries to warn her against it. She’s been there before. Angry, bitter, and pissed the hell off. But revenge blackens the soul. She learned that the hard way. Kanaya doesn’t listen.
She thought killing Gamzee would give her some kind of relief. Lift up some of the burden. At least, it would make her feel better. But… it doesn’t.
Instead she feels… empty.
She ignored her moirails advice. Her wife is still gone. And Stacey is still dead.
She thought she’d feel better, but now she’s just more lost than ever.
She sits alone with her thoughts and soon finds The Cancer King sitting down next to her.
He promises her her family back, and she agrees.
She sees the atrocities she’ll have to commit abd she agrees.
She sees who Karkat has become and she agrees.
Kanaya is… scary. She’s not the mad zealot that Gamzee is. She’s not carefully trying to avoid going to far, like Terezi or Eridan. She’s just… focused.
She takes no pride or joy in what she does. She never wanted to hurt anyone. But she will have her daughter back.
Kanaya’s relationship with this Rose is… weird. Kanaya is the oldest member of the Court next to Karkat while Rose is one of the youngest. Kanaya knows her Rose intimately, while this Rose hasn’t even met her yet. Kanaya tries not to spoil anything for her sake, aside from a few quips along the lines of “I Am Quite Sure You’ll Make Whoever You Marry A Very Happy Woman” and such. She’s pretty pissed to learn that this Rose did basically nothing wrong and still lost her timeline, so that’s some extra motivation in her tank.
You’d expect Kanaya to be pissed off with Gamzee. But… she’s not. She’s just cold and distant. It’s not like killing him in her timeline got her anywhere. But she’s still curt with him and avoids conversation. Gamzee asks some of the others what her deal is, but they only give him the basics. It’s not their story to tell. Still, Gamzee puts the pieces together and actually finds himself sympathizing a little. He gets this strange, distant feeling that he might know what it’s like to be a parent in a different timeline…
She remains good friends with this version of Terezi and Vriska. She apologizes to Vriska for not heading her advice and Vriska returns the sentiment. They all bond over shared fuck ups and The Scourge Sisters are happy to hear there’s at least one timeline where Vriska managed to turn her attitude around.
Similarly, she has a decent relationship with Tavros. Tavros finds it odd how Kanaya found her revenge unsatisfying when Tavros absolutely revelled in his.
Kanaya eventually discovers that Karkat could simply revive Stacey right now if he wanted abd tries to demand that he do so. He refuses. The King makes himself clear: you’ll get your daughter back after you help me and not a moment before.
In Kanaya’s mind, she has to agree.
“…I Am Bringing Her Back, Rose. I Do Not Know… How Much It Will Cost Me… But I Am Bringing Her Back. …You Will Always Be The Woman I Fell In Love With. I Just Hope I Am Still The Woman You Fell In Love With When I Return. …I Love You.”
