I very strongly dislike this film, but I will admit that some of the casting was spot on (even if the actors were given crap to work with), and the costume design is phenomenal.

The Royal Five don’t want to endanger Earth and want to go back to Mongo. Vultan agrees but he wants to help Castra. She is supposedly to have died.

April and Krotan are falling in love and yet April realizes that something does not feel right. Meanwhile, Jedda decides Krotan can only ever be a friend to her.

Aura and Barin say their desperate goodbyes. April’s boyfriend contacts the Royal House of Ming. Ming sends his troops to Earth. The Royal Five show up and Hadea uses her mind control to suggest Castra got killed. Vultan escapes with Castra. The Royal Five get imprisoned but Ming doesn’t stop his troops. He wants Earth anyway.

April’s boyfriend realizes what he has done. Amy tells Rick the truth. Phantom, Mandrake and Flash and their families decide to join Barin in the fight against Ming’s army.

Flash Gordon / Brian Blessed as Prince Vultan

You've got to hand it to Brian Blessed and the other Hawkmen actors: this is the sort of costume that can't be worn timidly. It must be worn with gusto or else it will utterly defeat its wearer. And they pull it off, wings and all. Interestingly, they're actually wearing slightly more than their comic counterparts (see below).

Prince Vultan's costume has some extra features that denote his rank. He has a fancy helmet with the badge of the hawkmen, showing crossed wings inside a star, and two tall horns? lightning bolts? stylized feathers? He also has a more substantial breastplate with another variation on the badge (crossed wings in front of a beaming sun). The breastplate appears to be made of leather, with overlapping scales in gold and deep brown.

Square-Enix's translation of Tactics Ogre is usually really good, but there's one noticeable error. The Vartan class, only available to the winged race, should be Vultan. It's named after Prince Vultan from Flash Gordon, who is a bird-man.

I don't know that I'll ever be able to properly express how much I love Brian Blessed.

This is a man who belongs on the stage at the Globe theatre in London doing every high Shakespeare play that has ever existed and we get him playing Prince Vultan, King Richard IV on Blackadder, and voicing Boss Nass.

Also Queen didn't need to go as hard as they did on the soundtrack for this one, but I'm glad they did.

The always entertaining Brian Blessed as Prince Vultan, leader of the Hawkmen (no, NOT them guys from Thanagar) in the 1980 film Flash Gordon.

Blessed's over-the-top performance, and the overall costume design, were the few bright spots in this otherwise dreadful film.

Hawk Kingdom is one of the Kingdoms of Mongo that openly rebelled against Ming which resulted in Vultan's parents being killed. Vultan now is the king but most of Hawk Kingdom is enslaved by Ming now and Vultan has to follow Ming's orders or he and his people will lose everything they have left. Vultan has a lot of rage and anger inside him. 

Prince Tevrok is also mentioned as being part of the rebels.
