As promised, now that we're a few days out from the final submissions deadline, here is a list of all the actors who have been submitted and will be in the bracket so far! If you submitted someone and they aren't on this list, there is a chance I felt they fell into that category of not really having a super strong connection to sci fi/fantasy generally and where the roles noted for them weren't necessarily roles that they're very well known for, or in a couple of cases there were people submitted where the work listed for them was all post 2000. But there were only a very small handful of actors like that; I think almost everyone submitted should be on here.

The final deadline for submissions will still be April 27th. I'll make another post before the polls start with the finalized list of actors for the tournament.

Rolling Stone Magazine Top 200 Singers - The Omissions List

Once in awhile, I’ll do a music themed blog post and boy do I have a post for you. Rolling Stone Magazine opens 2023 with a list that no one asked for. Their 200 Singers list is an all time low for the once flourishing magazine. When you include auto-tuned singers like Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Ariana Grande, Lana Del Ray and dull as dishwater singers (again, my opinion) like Morrissey, Courtney Love, Michael Stipe, Bono, Bruce Springsteen and Eddie Vedder, you lose credibility in my book. Wah-Wah -- "You Made Me Such A Big Star"

The “wah-wah” pedal – a small piece of guitarist gear – created a wild stir when it hit its commercial stride back in 1968, as Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child” first burst through the world’s transistor radios. But how did it come about and how did a project that began in an effort to make one four dollar switch into a thirty cent part go on to weave itself into almost every corner of rock music for decades?

Often referred to as the cry pedal for it’s almost human sound the “wah-wah” effect was first heard in recorded music in the late 50s when country artist Chet Atkins was using a self designed device.

In the sixties, the British Amp maker Vox was looking for ways to capitalize on ‘Beatlemania’ and on the cusp of the psychedelic era in 1965 was looking for something new. In a crazy accidental “mash-up” of the Vox Organ and the Vox Super Beatle Guitar Amp a “once in a lifetime moment” occurred. Warwick Electronics – who also owned the Thomas Organ Company – were in the throes of knocking out a new product line, the Vox Amplifonic Orchestra. Vox assigned Brad Plunket – who was a junior electronics engineer there at the time – to replace an expensive –four-dollar – “mid-range boost” switch somehow.

Well Plunket came up with a “sweepable” EQ switch – that cost 30 cents – which variably cut or boosted the base and the treble. Plunket had guitarist John Glennan plug it in to his guitar as a test. It sounded “sweet” but a guitarist would need three hands to work it and the guitar. So then Plunket grabbed a volume control pedal from a nearby Vox Organ. The resulting sound and ease of use produced a “eureka” moment…with some swear words that Plunket chooses to not repeat. The “wah-wah” pedal has been used to wondrous effect by many of our most loved rockers and bands; Cream, Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Led Zeppelin, Living Colour and of course through base guitar Metallica’s Cliff Burton.

In their major label era of the 1960s and early 70s, PR&TR were one of the tightest and most visible acts in the business. They were the first real rock band signed to Columbia Records, and their garage band energy and declarative stage look pushed back on the British Invasion bands of 1964.

The Raiders kicked out hit after hit in multiple genres including bubblegum, country rock, hard rock, psychedelia, and soul/r’n’b, all with dazzling excellence. They cut the first definitive version of “Louie Louie” before leaving their Oregon base for Los Angeles, joining Terry Melcher (Byrds producer) to launch a prolific and innovative run of great records that still play today: “Just Like Me”, “Kicks” and (recently in the film ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD) “Good Thing,” “Hungry,” “Mr. Sun Mr. Moon,” etc. Between 1965 and 1970, as Dick Clark expanded his jukebox TV empires, he hired PR&TR to host three TV shows. Before The Monkees even twanged “Last Train to Clarksville,” PR&TR had already set the bar for TV bands, gluing pre-adolescent me to the tube with rock’n’roll comedy and ear candy—and there was eye candy for 1000s of girls screaming for teen idol Mark Lindsay. He set the bar as a powerhouse vocalist, able to croon soft sensual pop ballads then flip to paint-peeling bluesy growls.

The Raiders crested in 1971 with the #1 hit “Indian Reservation,” which was a repackaging of a Mark Lindsay solo recording (backed by the Wrecking Crew). As a solo act, Mark was already charting with “Silver Bird” and the hippy girl anthem “Arizona.” He branched into other music business roles, composing jingles and songs for films and TV shows. Legendary author Stephen King expressed his fan-dom with Mark’s 2001 cover of “Treat Her Right,” backed by Los Straitjackets.

Meanwhile, Mark’s career intersected with The Carpenters, The Chesterfield Kings, Eric Johnson, Carla Olson, Gerry Rafferty, Barbra Streisand, Dionne Warwick, and The Monkees, whose orbit led me to cross paths with Mark a couple of times, and he always treated me like a gentleman. I first saw him in concert in 1993, and it was a rock solid show loaded with the hits and deep cuts. Lately he’s been active doing radio shows and webcasts, the latest being “The American Revolution” on Sirius XM.

If I had to pick one Mark Lindsay track, it’s "Too Much Talk.” It blew my mind when I was a kid—my 45 of it cracked but I kept pressing it with my fingers till the vinyl tissued. The fidelity on this clip is a tad distorted, but the visuals speak volumes.

Imagine that you have chance to create new skin universe for LoL. Which theme (or themes) you'd choose? Mine are ink world (based on batim), steampunk and circus.

You got me at steampunk.

I really like the mix of "victorian era" style and machinery.

The thing is,they already used themes I like. I like the spooky Tim Burton style? There's fright night.

Cosmic/star pattern?Same. There's already a skinline.

Magical girl?Uh-uh you bet they did.

Maybe something inspired by Yoshi Woolly world?

Maybe a silly job one? Because I really would love a weather report Viktor with a thunder cloud for the Ulti but if I'm not wrong there's already Janna.

Snow White Winter – Snow White: The Fairest of Them All (2001 TV movie)

This TV film aired on ABC's Wonderful World of Disney, which probably led many viewers led think it was a live action remake of Disney's Snow White. It wasn't produced by Disney, however, but by Hallmark Entertainment. It's an original version of the fairy tale, written and directed by frequent Tim Burton collaborator Caroline Thompson, and starring Miranda Richardson as the wicked Queen Elspeth, Smallville's Kristin Kreuk as Snow White, and a supporting cast that includes Warwick Davis as dwarf Saturday, Vincent Schiavelli as "dwarf" Wednesday, and Clancy Brown as a genii-like being known as the Green-Eyed One, or the Granter of Wishes. Unfortunately, the whole doesn't equal the sum of its promising parts, but all the same, it's an intriguing, creative retelling.

The film's first unusual detail that neither Snow White nor the Queen are of royal birth. Snow White is born to a happy peasant couple, John and Josephine. But when Josephine dies, John sets out with the baby in search of milk for her, only to lose his way in a snowstorm and finally collapse in despair on a frozen lake. But his tears melt the ice, freeing the mysterious Green-Eyed One from imprisonment. To repay him, this powerful being transforms John into a king, conjures up a kingdom for him to rule, and gives him his own sister, Elspeth, as his bride. Elspeth is introduced as an ugly witch in a remote cottage, who transforms trespassing gnomes and dwarfs into lifeless garden statues. But she gladly accepts the new life her brother offers when he uses his magic to make her beautiful. In a detail clearly inspired by Andersen's The Snow Queen, she breaks a magic mirror so that two of its shards pierce John's eye and heart, making him love her at the expense of all else. Thus, Snow White grows up as a princess, but a lonely one, neglected by her self-absorbed stepmother and bewitched father. Meanwhile, Queen Elspeth can command any mirror to show her "the fairest of them all" – her private room is a hall of mirrors, all of which show her images of herself that proclaim her the fairest. But she also has a magic hand mirror, with which she performs all kinds of sorcery.

Sixteen years later, the handsome Prince Alfred visits the castle. Tired of her husband, Queen Elspeth frees him from his enchantment (a slightly too abrupt resolution of that plot line) and tries to win the younger man's love instead. But she fails as he falls in love with Snow White and she with him. Worse yet, all her mirrors now proclaim Snow White as the fairest of them all. So she sends her admirer Hector the huntsman to kill Snow White, and as punishment for scorning her, she turns Prince Alfred into a bear. Soon afterward, she also imprisons her husband inside a mirror.

The seven dwarfs are named Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, (This is the second Snow White adaptation to give them these names, the first being the Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics anime episode.) Each wears a different color of the rainbow, and instead of being miners, they use machines to create the weather. They can also teleport anywhere by transforming themselves into a rainbow. And in a comic touch, only six of them are really dwarfs – the Grumpy-like character Wednesday is 6'4", but no one ever acknowledges it. (Also, Thursday is a woman, but no one ever mentions her gender.)

Snow White is still wandering the woods alone when Elspeth magically sends a silk sash for her to find, which tightens to suffocate her when she puts it on. But the dwarfs find her and save her, and it's then that she comes to live with them. At her urging, the dwarfs teleport to the castle to try to free her father and Elspeth's other victims, and it's then that Elspeth arrives at their house with a poisoned apple. She disguises herself not as an old peddler woman, but as a pretty, motherly young peddler woman who looks exactly like Snow White's dead mother Josephine.

Rather than a glass coffin, the dwarfs make a coffin of ice for Snow White with their weather powers, and (recalling The Tale of the Dead Princess and the Seven Knights) they entomb her in a cave, where Prince Alfred in his bear form mourns over her too. But she doesn't lie there for long. Back at the castle, when Elspeth tries to change back into her usual self, she finds herself returned to her real form: the ugly hag. Her act of murder has robbed her of her beauty forever. In rage and anguish she smashes the magic mirror, and when she does so, all her spells are broken. Snow White awakens, Prince Alfred becomes human again, King John is freed from his prison, and all the enchanted garden gnomes come back to life. Elspeth meets her doom at the hands of the gnomes (though we don't see what they do to her – we only hear her scream), while Snow White and Prince Alfred ride away to live happily ever after.

This Snow White is full of good creative ideas, but this is arguably its weakness: the script is so busy with inventive plot twists that not much room is left to flesh out the characters. The strongest characterization is Richardson's Queen Elspeth: deliciously cunning and evil, yet ultimately pitiable. But Kreuk's Snow White is generally cold and sour. Her lonely upbringing presumably explains this, but it's still hard to engage with her, and none of her relationships (with her father, the Prince or the dwarfs) are developed with much heart. The phrase "style over substance" comes to mind. Still, the style is enjoyable, with a blend of darkness, mysticism and colorful charm that suits the story well, and the cast is strong.

Ultimately, I'm afraid I have to call this a mediocre Snow White. But it's still worth seeing: it does have strengths as well as weaknesses, and it's most definitely a fresh, inventive version of the story.
