If you’re ever struggling to think of comments that won’t shadow ban “political” content, just ask something open-ended while being “playfully controversial”. Examples below:
“What color notebooks do you all use for sience? I use orange”
“What do you all drink on a hot day? I drink a lot of hot chocolate”
“What temperature makes socks and sandals justifiable?”
“Do you all set your toilet paper towards you or the wall? I sit mine on top of the holder.”

I will shame you until the end of time. Cannot believe you place avocados above mangos???? Liking avocados at all?!?! Praying for your taste buds, my dear 🌚🙏🏾
LOL. I love that I'm on my lunch break and getting Tumblr asks about fruit.
Kim, I'm Dominican. It's in my blood to love avocados as much as I do. You probably don't want to hear that I consider guacamole a spread (it’s better than mayonnaise 😆). Or how when I order sandwiches, I always ask for sliced avocado or how my favorite appetizer/side is guac and chips. Or that, growing up, one of my favorite snacks was fried plantains with fried salami and sliced avocado (still is one of my favorites lol).
I could keep going, but I won't because I feel like I've pushed the limits of our friendship and grossed you out enough. 🤣🤣 Don't worry; when the day comes that we share a meal together, I won't subject you to avocado options off the menu, and I hope you won’t subject me to *insert questionable mango dish here* lol.

The history of the watermelon and its association with blackness is intertwined with the history of colonialism and Western anti-Arab sentiment. Before the watermelon was associated with the descendants of chattel slavery in the US, it was associated with Arabs by the so-called Great Empires of Europe for much of the same reasons.
The discourse around this is clearly manufactured, but if we're going to hear about it anywyas, we might as well look at the actual history and think about how imperialist nations make use of certain symbols and tropes consistently throughout time and space.

actually though I think we need to talk about the way that people will just believe shit.
you can say whatever the hell you want, and people will just take that at face value, and it doesn't actually matter how much that thing is disproven later; people will still believe it. once they hear it, that information- no matter how far from the truth- taints their view forever.
some stranger publishes an anon that says "[X] is a literal known child predator and it's unbelievable that so many people still reblog from them." the blogger has responded, "oh my god what the fuck?? i can't believe nobody told me sooner I feel so gross".
there is no proof, no link, no indication of where this information came from. you can't even verify that the blogger in question didn't send this to themselves.
but there are still a bunch of notes on it, it's linked in a callout somewhere, people are referencing the same exact claim in their own posts, and [X] is now getting a bunch of anon hate and comments/reblogs/whatever from people who genuinely believe this lie about them.
someone comes forward with irrevocable proof that not only is [X] not a child predator, but they were in fact a victim of it, and the original anon was sent by the blogger themselves, and that blogger made it up from nothing. maybe they're also a pathological liar. hell, they could even be doing the shit they accused [X] of themselves.
it doesn't matter.
everyone heard this lie about [X], and now they believe it. there are enough iterations of this original lie that it doesn't matter if it was disproven; what about all these other people who are saying it? you can't prove all of them wrong!
and internet discourse isn't the only place we see this: Trump fabricates shit all the time, and it doesn't matter if he has proof, or if anyone else has even said this before him. his followers accept it, and everyone who hears from them- directly or indirectly- accepts it as fact, too. maybe they say it's distorted, but they believe some other version of it, thinking they're being Reasonable and Neutral or whatever.
it's not just silly little tumblr fun facts and blue watermelon and purple-eyes-no-periods disease and shit. it's not even just feeding hate and violence toward the Bad Tranny of the Week.
we NEED to start seeing the connections here, and the ways people use this to manipulate us and harm others. and we need to start making sure that our actions aren't going to be regrettable if we end up being wrong.

if i'm being completely honest i think homestuck's impact is moreso on 2010s and beyond's fandom culture which does indeed have overlap with online (keyword online) queer culture but i think it would be much harder to parse its impact on queer culture in a broader sense. then again it's included in a queer media tourney that should have never existed in the first place, a discourse magnet to pit it against prominent works by prominent members of the lgbt community (dtwof), documentaries about oft neglected corners of the community (drag/ballroom culture and twoc in paris is burning), a directorial debut from the first out black lesbian to ever direct a feature film about the representation of black women in cinema (the watermelon woman) and an autobiographical work by a stone butch lesbian (stone butch blues) just to name a few, and i imagine people's frustration is at least partially because of the tunnel vision fandom culture often has when it comes to media consumption

Concerning Pink Lemonade
So, in the wake of yesterday’s brief lemonade discourse with @prismatic-bell, I started wondering. I began my researches at home, by consulting my late-70s edition of the Betty Crocker Cookbook. Yes, Betty Crocker is a corporate invention and shill, but her cookbook (at least for that edition ) is very handy for a lot basic things. If a dish is frequently found on American tables, odds are good it’ll have some sort recipe for it, even if it isn’t your favorite version of the dish. And sure enough, “pink” was down as a variation on lemonade, and the lemonade recipe itself is an acceptable one. Alas, to make pink lemonade the instructions are to make basic lemonade and add two tablespoons of grenadine syrup and a drop or two of food coloring! Which is about what you’d expect from commercial lemonade but I think we can all probably agree that it’s a cheat in a private kitchen and not worthy of the name “home cooking.”
So I started considering what I knew, or thought I knew, about pink lemonade, and why I thought so. That it was made from grapefruit I had no doubt - I distinctly remember my mom’s voice telling me that when I hesitated to drink it the first time. But I think the rest of the idea I had about it, though logical and experience-based, is not something anyone ever told me. (I have never actually made the stuff myself; never had that much grapefruit juice on hand.) Because, pink lemonade excepted, if a drink is made from a fruit, water, and sugar, it is fruitade - lemonade, limeade, orangeade. But grapefruitade is not a word and you only have to see or say it to know why. So grapefruitade became pink lemonade - essentially the same recipe, with an appropriate amount of grapefruit juice in place of the lemon juice. If a fruit is added to lemonade it becomes fruit lemonade - strawberry lemonade, raspberry lemonade, etc. Add one more fruit and you’ve got yourself a fruit punch.
This all seems tolerably obvious to me. But prismatic-bell’s evidence demonstrates that, to some people, strawberry lemonade is an alternate term for pink lemonade, not a separate thing.
So I asked my husband what was in pink lemonade and he said: “Well, if it’s real pink lemonade, grapefruit.” Which was highly gratifying but not definitive. He’s from Georgia and my family is all midwestern (though I”m an Air Force Brat and my cuisine, like my accent, is a kind of American Fusion). We are, however, the same age, and I thought it entirely possible that the original pink lemonade had fallen out of fashion and that Kids Today had never known The Real Stuff. So I cranked up the old search engine and went looking for pink lemonade recipes and culinary histories.
Well! Imagine my consternation when I turned up not one single pure grapefruitade recipe, only a lot of variations on fruit lemonade. Cranberry is apparently far the most common, but prismatic-bell’s strawberries, raspberries, pomegranates, and even watermelon appeared. Even more shockingly, one of the legends of its invention (which are lost in the mists of the 19th century circus) is that it was created when a refreshment stand worker threw cinnamon candies into the lemonade. I can believe a lot of things, but I do not believe that.
So now I’m curious. I have no particular hope of a poll made on my blog getting any traction, but I’m going to turn the Shiny New Post Editor back on and make a poll, and plead for it to be reblogged around. I’m typing this in Legacy because I forgot and anyway who’s going to read all this before voting in a poll?

I’m a newer Larrie and pretty naive about the One Direction days because I didn’t listen to that type of music during the time they were a band. I started liking them individually and somehow found myself in this fandom. I guess my question is why do fans compare them constantly? They all came from the same band, they all seem to support each other at least privately if not publicly and appear to be pretty grateful to have had that same experience. I’ve seen some some solo Harry fans really attack Liam and Louis negatively with even comments on their looks. They constantly compare them to Harry and how they’re somehow losers because they don’t currently have the kind of commercial success as Harry. I’ve seen other solo fans also go after Harry for all kinds of reasons too, which is just so sad to see. Was it like this in the band too? Or has this all heightened because they all went solo? They all have different sounds, so why compare them? Am I missing something maybe?
Hi darling. Welcome to the hellhole fandom. So, no. When they were in the band it was actually unusual for anyone to ever voice a dislike for any one of them. People had their favorites, but publicly everyone supported everyone.
1DHQ started the fracture with the constant pushing of Harry vs the band. They really wanted to position Harry as being separate from (and better than) the other guys. Then Zayn left. There were people who were disappointed/angry with him or who no longer cared about his career, so we started having OT5 vs OT4 discourse. Then babygate started and we had the next fracture where people began to think maybe Larry broke up or Louis cheated on Harry. This was when people became houies (people who thought HL has dated, but now has broken up). Then that was followed by the hiatus and Harry/his team pushing the separation of Harry up a notch.
There were still many OT4 supporters until HS1 dropped and then there was a whole faction of people who flipped out over Harry’s lyrics and image not meeting their expectations and I think that was when houies really divided into harries and louies. There were still larries and antis. But now there were also louies who were only interested in Louis and “rad louies” (radical louies) who hated Harry and thought he was the reason Louis’ career was being “sabotaged”. And there were also harries — some of whom hated Louis because they thought he cheated on Harry and some also bought into the idea that Harry was just better than everyone else.
The fractured nature of our fandom really went into overdrive with the popularity of Fine Line and quarantine. Thousands and thousands of people entered the fandom and many had zero interest in 1D. Harry’s het image was in overdrive with Watermelon Sugar and the idea that Camille broke his heart (thus, being inspiration for the album). Holivia, DWD, As It Was, Harry’s House and Harry’s growing fame really made things worse in that department.
It seems as though a lot of Harry’s newest fans see any link back to 1D or his former bandmates as being a step backwards or as the other guys trying to “use” Harry as a way to promote themselves. And until recently, Harry spoke very little about the band and had very little public interaction with them, so unless you paid very close attention, it was easy to think he didn’t care much for or about them. I think many fans do this weird thing of needing their fave to be “the best” — as if that somehow reflects on them, as well. Like, the way many Harries went overboard making sure Lloyd won best tour photographer only because they didn’t want Louis’ photographer to win. It’s ridiculous.
Some of the hatred towards Harry is rooted in jealousy because people feel he had an unfair advantage over the others, thus having a success the others could have had just as well. Some of the hate is people feeling as though he has the power to do whatever he wants in terms of his image and stunts, so he must be fake and only cares about fame and money. Some of it is people buying into the idea that Harry ended the band because he wanted to be a star and he’s actively trying to ruin Louis’ career. There are a million different reasons people send hate his way.
As for comparing the five of them, as you say, they all have different sounds and none of them compete with each other. But I do think Sony very much wants Harry to be the Justin Timberlake and be the only one who reaches that huge level of success. And the media doesn’t help because many of the articles are written in a way that praises Harry and puts the others down (for no reason at all), so fans feel defensive and lash out. I tend to think Liam, Niall, Louis, and Harry all care about each other very much and are supportive of each other. And I really doubt they like the articles that do that nor would they support the nasty way some of the fans behave.
Sorry this was so long. And at the same time, this barely touched the surface, but I hope it helped a little.

occasionally i catch a whiff of Fire Emblem: Three Hopes discourse and i'm like hm i wish i could partake, but. i played exactly one route in that game, over the course of one afternoon, playing it co-op with a bud & we were both staggeringly drunk the whole time. as god intended. so my only Three Hopes take is "tastes like watermelon margaritas"
