I made Welsh rarebit.
Tumblr media
I've been wanting to try it since Woodcock ordered it in that sexually charged scene in Phantom Thread.
It was really good. I finally found a recipe that didn't use Guiness.
Tumblr media
I put it too close to the broiler. I used yellow mustard, hence the yellow color, instead of Dijon or brown. Mustard. For the cheese, I used Gouda.
I wonder what would happen if I left out the egg yolk?
I give the English a lot of shit about their food, but they did something when they made this.

Just realised the world cups in November, I'm going to be singing it's coming home while making all my little German food 😂

Here’s a pending-tourism question for you if you’ve the time:
As a descendant of the Welsh diaspora, I’ve wanted to visit Wales for years to see where my ancestors were from. However, I am torn because part of the goal, in my opinion, of traveling is to experience local authentic cuisine - but I’m allergic to dairy. I realize that rules out a lot of traditional Welsh foods, which I am told often include butter and cheese.
The question to you is: is there much of a vegan Welsh cuisine food scene in Cardiff, Swansea, or Bangor? Or is that just not much of a thing. (I presume there are a number of vegan restaurants throughout the country, but are many/any specifically catering towards Welsh cuisine? The goal is experience traditional Welsh flavors as much as is possible, and I find myself deeply distrusting of non-local internet food reviews because often only the locals who will know how things are supposed to taste).
I'm going to throw this one open to the floor, because my instinctive reaction is no, but I'm not vegan and others may have found something (particularly around Cardiff).
I mean, there's plenty of vegan food here! It's just not Welsh, really
If it's just dairy that's the problem rather than all animal products, mind, see if you can try dragon sausages or Welsh lamb. Particularly, and I cannot stress this enough, if you can find either mountain lamb, or Gower salt marsh lamb. Mountain lamb is sweeter, and salt marsh lamb has a fuller flavour from the grazing they do (plus it's super environmentally friendly, because they help manage the salt marshes without machinery and therefore carbon fuels or ground disturbance.) And faggots of course! If you like liver. It's an offal dish.
OH and a LOT of seafood. In Swansea, go to the market. Cockles, laverbread (seaweed and oats mixed into patties and fried on a bakestone) and bacon are the traditional breakfast, but you can also get the catch of the day. A particular delicacy in Wales was always sewin, our word for river trout. So there's that.

Why do I like Cult Of The Lamb?
Is it because I love the game & artstyle?
Is it because the Welsh are known to have Lamb as one of our favourite cuisine?
You may never know... ~

Hi! I’ve been really enjoying your writing recently, especially your head canons. I think you really get the essence of the characters very well. This may be a weird request (and you can tell me if so!) but I was wondering what the main Assassins (if possibly also the Templars like Shay and Haytham) would react to a Latina/Hispanic reader. I’m Hispanic myself, and I’ve found no content that fits specifically to me; I always tell myself to just write the head cannons or fanfic myself, but I feel too shy honestly, and you’d do a far better job of it than I would!
Maybe the reader fits a lot of the stereotypes (kinda like I do) – likes dancing, cooking, likes speaking a lot of Spanish all the time, is somewhat social, very feminine, etc. I wonder what the different characters would genuinely think of this personality at first meeting, or maybe in their relationship?
Again, if you don’t feel comfortable with it, that’s cool! I still love your head canons!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
notes: It's not a weird request at all and I'm so happy to know that you enjoy my writing and like my characterisations! And omg never be shy about sharing your writing! I'm sure it would be amazing!
This is my first time writing a Hispanic/Latina reader (I've mostly focused on the Hispanic aspect just for you!) so I'd love feedback and/or constructive criticism! Making my readers feel represented is very important to me and I'd like to make sure that I can give you good rep! I've tried to follow your request of the reader fitting a lot of the stereotypes listed and I hope that I've done so in a respectful way!
characters: Altaïr, Ezio, Edward, Haytham, Shay, Connor, Arno, Jacob

Tumblr media
a l t a ï r :
As much as he's not really a social butterfly, he couldn't help but feel drawn to you before he even knew you all that well
He chalks it down to a feminine charm that you have (and your amazing and generous cooking! Though, I think it might take a bit of convincing to get him to dance with you lol)
He's very interested in your culture and shows a lot of interest on picking up Spanish seeing as you tend to speak it a lot (I can imagine he was interested in learning languages seeing as he likely spoke Arabic and Greek and probably spoke to Richard Lionheart in French) - he'll try and join you in speaking as he's going along the learning process!
I can see him as being interested to learn how to make the dishes you cook too! I think the two of you could have quite a few date nights where you both prepare dinner together of typical dishes from each other's cultures, having a little private dance around the kitchen with just the two of you with some music in the background as you teach each other the recipes.
e z i o :
I headcanon that Ezio speaks Spanish pretty well (whether fluently or not, I don't really have enough to go on) because of his communications with Maria and Aguilar as shown in AC Rebellion so he loves hearing you speak Spanish as it gives him a chance to test his skills when he speaks with you!
As a couple, you both take turns cooking and so your diets will be a mix of Mediterranean and Latin American cuisine
Being from an upper-class family, he would have head to learn courtly dances so I can 100% see Ezio as a dancer and he just loves to dance with you! You don't even need music, just a beat or a hummed melody and the two of you are dancing with each other!
I see Ezio as a very physically affectionate man and I can picture him just loving be be all cuddled up with you, maybe with you laying on his chest, while he asks you all about your home and listens with keen interest while you talk (I think he'll try and get these conversations going in Spanish too because he loves hearing you speak in it and it's a good chance for him to work on his language skills)
e d w a r d :
Edward might be Welsh but he's no stranger to this part of the world so (depending on what part of Latin America you're from) there's a chance he's experienced a bit of your culture!
He probably knows a handful of words and phrases in Spanish (just based off Spanish presence in the Caribbean in canon) but he can get a little lost when you speak it often. Does he make an effort to stop you? Absolutely not, he adores hearing you speak Spanish. Does he make an effort to learn it too? He does his best
Edward's very outgoing, no stranger to nights out and we see he likes music too so he strikes me as a dancer! Hen could dance entire nights away with you and honestly it's one of his favourite pastimes! He loves spending time with you and the way you smile as you dance is so beautiful to him, he just can't get enough!
Edward's travelled quite a bit so he loves to tell his own stories and hear other people's stories of where they've been and what they've seen so he's very eager to hear all about where you're from!
h a y t h a m :
Canonically, Haytham's fluent in Spanish (AC Forsaken) so the two of you can just weave between Spanish and English and he's not bothered in the slightest (in fact, he quite enjoys it!)
Being upper-class (and English where food in culture isn't really a big deal) I can't really picture Haytham as ever learning to cook for himself (despite a few very basic things) so please teach him how to cook the way you do because he loves everything you make!
And I can see him as the sort to try and surprise you with a romantic dinner where he's cooked all your favourites for you that you've taught him!
Haytham strikes me as the sort who studies things like History in his free time and I can see him taking up an interest in learning all about the history of your country and how things have caused your culture to develop! But, as much as he enjoys research, he likes laying down with you after a long day and just listening to your voice and it's nice to hear you excitedly talk about your home.
s h a y :
Another one who, like Edward, has travelled a bit and loves to both tell and hear stories, he wants to hear all about where you're from and what it's like for you there!
Shay isn't very familiar with Spanish (unlike French and Portuguese) but he'll make an effort to learn if you're Spanish-speaking! He's had to do it for wherever he travels to anyway so it's really nothing new for him. And if you speak Brazilian Portuguese, he'll make an effort to learn more of your language with the European Portuguese he knows as a foundation.
I can picture him as a a shy dancer but he can be convinced with some help from you! He's utterly enamoured with you and he finds you so charming that he just can't resist when you invite him to dance with you!
He enjoys your cooking and I see Shay as the sort of man who likes to cook for his partner often so he's keen to learn how to make your favourite dishes from you!
c o n n o r :
He's so quiet and reserved that you truly are a ray of sunshine for him with your sociable ways and it's honestly what draws him to you!
Like Altaïr, I can see his as a very reluctant dancer but with a lot of convincing (and when it's just the two of you) I can see him giving in and dancing with you, breaking out of his shell some and enjoying himself with you!
I'm pretty sure Connor only spoke a Native dialect and English but he likes to hear you speak Spanish a lot. He could honestly just sit with you and listen to you talk for hours, even if he can't understand you, because he just loves to watch the emotions play across your face and he'll just become lost in thoughts of how much he loves you.
He likes that you're quite sociable too because it means you can do a lot of the talking for him lol so in public he tends to follow your lead in social situations while he sticks close to your side.
a r n o :
Arno's big on the arts so if you can tell him about it, he'll love to hear all about the artists, writers, poets and music from your home country (even if he has to rely on translations)
Like Haytham, being upper-class, I can imagine it was never really important for him to learn how to cook for himself (running the café, he's learned how to bake but cooking still isn't much of a strong point) so the two of you have a sort of dynamic where you make the dinners and he makes the desserts!
He sort of treats it like a date and the two of you will be giggling and dancing around the kitchen together as you go about sorting everything out (but Arno is a very physically affectionate man and there have been instances where food has burned because he just couldn't let go of you or stop smothering you in kisses hehe)
He'll learn how to play some of your favourite songs in your mother tongue on the piano so that he can play while he hears you sing in your own language, regardless of your skill, he finds it romantic and he wants to surprise you by learning your favourite songs for you to sing along to!
j a c o b :
Thank the gods you can cook because he can't to save his life (Evie is so thankful for your skill in cooking because she no longer has to worry about Jacob burning the hideout down whenever he wants something to eat)
He does his best to learn little bits of Spanish for you and the first thing he went for was sweet nicknames for you to try and surprise you!
Like Edward, he's very outgoing and no stranger to night life so I think he could dance the night away with you. Oftentimes, he'll be hugging you, swaying you in his arms, and then he's humming a melody and the two of you are just dancing around the place together, he loves to be close to you and see the smile on your face!
I'm pretty sure it was mentioned that Jacob had never left Crawley before going to London (correct me if I'm wrong) so he could listen to you talk about where you're from forever. He laps up every single detail and asks lots of questions and he's set on going there with you one day. It's something that he often brings up because his world is just so small and yours seems so much bigger and different and he'd just love to see it with you one day!

The One Chosen:
Ædmund: Vegetable curry.
Helena: Always likes to try something new.

Bignell: Spotted dick. (A traditional English dish.)
Totem Force:
Kay: Likes cakes quite a bit, but is very well-disciplined about eating them.
Sammy: Bacon double cheeseburger with hot sauce and no gherkins.
Anara: Fish, as long as it’s sustainably and ethically sourced. (Never octopus or squid, though.)
Chi: Has been teaching himself to cook Nigerian cuisine; one of his favourites is suya, spicy meat skewers.
Ryu: “The fallen bodies of my enemies.” (Akira’s translation: He likes meat.)
Akira: Sugar. Anything sugary. Just as long as there’s sugar.
Phil: Claims to subsist entirely on a single bean a day…
Lani: Also sugar, but in a far more refined manner than Akira.
Mirabelle: Yellow plums.
Unearth your Gays:
Aiden: Human blood. (Although he exclusively drinks animal blood instead.)
Toby: Used to really like grilled halloumi (a hard cheese), but now has to subsist entirely on rare meat.
Lan: Used to love his grandmother’s char sui and plum sauce, but is no longer capable of eating at all.
Seth: Burgers. He doesn’t actually miss Ancient Egyptian cuisine that much.

you. grabs you. popular/staple dishes and/or cuisines in Soul-Bound. how do these vary by region? what about culture? what about class/status -- is there a difference? what is considered a delicacy or luxury food item?
DISHES ASDASDSADASDASAAA
Okay! So,,, to start: the current timeline of Soul-Bound is a lot like that of our modern-times, but with magical elements added in. That means you see a lot of the same foods and meals that we do in our own world and countries (ex: Vesper is technically Welsh, on his mother's side, so he enjoys those kinds of dishes).
The cultural system is similar, with minor differences in how society treats itself more than the foods they eat. I'd say that this concept is common with most of the works Kara and I make, since we'd prefer writing societies where social concepts like queerness doesn't really get mistreatment and confusion, it's just a staple of life and thus does not matter to the environment as a whole. Being a shapeshifter and being trans is like. Basic. There's no hate against whether you like the same gender or something else, gender is a loose concept anyways, you get the idea.
Tangent aside, random foods from pizza, ramen, beef wellington, pasta, to salsa and chips, brownies and cake-- all these things still exist and are still made regularly, but! The biodiversity is what has changed. The ingredients are more diverse. There are plants and animals that may have gone extinct or don't exist in reality, that still exist in Soul-Bound.
So while the recipes and foods conceptually are very similar to the foods here per region, what goes into them may change more so than their general makeup. For instance, a meatloaf, but one of the meats is ground griffon meat compared to simply beef may occur due to a population of said creatures nearby.
(I only recently got into Dungeon Meshi, but I'd say that what ingredients are used in that series are very comparable to Soul-Bound. Things like regular iceberg lettuce exist and can be used towards food, but you could also say, use mandrakes to make up your salad too. As Kara puts it, "You make a familiar recipe with unfamiliar ingredients.")
As for what cuisines are considered delicacies versus normal, that absolutely matters on your species. I'd say humans are the most adventurous in terms of eating odd foods, but demons will eat anything yet absolutely adore things that have an insane level of magical potential in their makeup (souls, being the most obvious thing here, but eating the spells from a grimoire is equally something appetizing for them).
Cannibalism is also, a thing too in terms of like, not everyone has the response humans do to eating their own kind. Some are like snakes and don't think twice about eating other snakes, a demon sure doesn't care about eating other demons. Mers will eat fish despite being half fish. It's also abhorrent to do this with some species and totally fine to others, even varying on the individual level.
Eating another intelligent species sometimes doesn't matter; though it can become dangerous depending on the properties. Something can still be toxic to one species but not to another, and sometimes there are bonuses to eating certain cuisines. A human eating a mermaid's flesh could achieve immortality, but also said human could turn into a grotesque undying monster that lives forever in eternal agony! :) You never know!
Class and status affecting foods also depends entirely on the species too. Centaurs, being larger creatures, may have trouble traversing cities, and thus 'richer' centaurs may value such casual things as human street foods as something that could belong in a high end restaurant. Mermaids may like sushi and land-based meats because how the hell do you get beef in the ocean??? Fae may only enjoy fruits grown from trees that have only been watered using the most purified of water, and the most natural of soil (or they may only like soil that has been using compost from demon remains. crazy stuff).

Where’s somewhere you’ve been that you’d like to return to, and somewhere you haven’t been but would like to visit someday?
See, I feel like, knowing me, everyone expects me to say "Ireland" or "Scotland" -- and I do, don't get me wrong. (I'm heading back to Scotland this year! Woo!) But it's predictable. If you were going to ask ten followers or mutuals of mine who've been following me for any amount of time, ESPECIALLY if they came for Celtic Studies, "Where does R want to go?" The answer would be unanimously "Oh, R wants to go to Ireland, possibly back to her old MA stomping grounds."
So, for something people DON'T know -- The Netherlands! I really liked it there the last time I was there, the people were lovely, the cuisine was great, there were Tony's Chocolonelys everywhere....stroopwafels....gelato....gorgeous canals...old churches....malls that feel like they're eldritch spaces due to how BIG they are....great architecture. I barely got to visit any of the museums, spent next to no time in Amsterdam (that wasn't spent negotiating for my missing luggage) though I was able to sneak into a couple. And the hotel I stayed at at the time was, bar none, the most luxurious place I've ever stayed at for a conference, it was like. An authentic 17th century hotel. It was just a genuinely great time, it's a beautiful country, and I'd love to see my friends in the area again.
For someplace I haven't been...I've never been to Wales. Which is a shame, honestly. (@ my Welsh academic friends: ARRANGE FOR A BILINGUAL CONFERENCE ON THE MABINOGI SO I HAVE AN EXCUSE.) Likewise, I was really hoping to get to Brittany this year (which would have ALSO fulfilled my goal of visiting France), especially since I've been TRYING to get over there for about...five years now (?) but unfortunately, the conference submission deadline was RIGHT around a very stressful time so I wasn't able to submit. One day...

A Simple Meal
Tumblr media
Hullo, Gentle Readers. Part of being a great DM is learning to engage all of your players’ senses. That means not just describing what they see and hear, but what they feel, smell, and taste as well. As a result, one way I’ve found to immerse my players, besides music, is to feed them foods that evoke the period and region they’re in. For example, the lands of southern Velnar, where they’re currently traveling, are meant to evoke India and south-eastern Asia to a certain degree. One week, we all ordered food from a local eatery that does Indo-Chinese cuisine (which I highly recommend if you’ve never tried it), and that really helped get across the flavors of the country the players are in.
Many basic D&D realms are based on medieval western Europe to some degree, so I thought I’d share some ideas on what you could feed your players that will evoke this period. It also provides something a little different to serve your players in place of pizza or Doritos.
Bread: Arguably the most basic staple of all meals. In medieval dining, bread was not only used as something to eat, but stale bread was cut into slices referred to as trenchers. These were used in place of plates at many tables, and, especially at feasts, after the meal, when the trenchers had soaked up all the juices of the meats and such, they were given as alms to the poor. Brown and wheat breads would be fairly common, with white breads being a little more luxurious and expensive. You could either buy your own, or, if you have time, make some rustic loaves. Here is a simple and delicious recipe to use: https://shelfcooking.com/rustic-bread/
Cheese: I am, admittedly, a total sucker for cheese. It might be my favorite food in the world, and bread and cheese together make an excellent meal all on their own. If you’re looking for a tiny bit of authenticity in terms of what cheeses would’ve been available to someone living in a medieval European society, I found a list at https://housecapuchin.com/portfolio/a-list-of-medieval-cheeses/. If you’re not looking to be super authentic (and it is a fantasy world after all), I strongly recommend y fenni, a Welsh cheese best known in the U.S. as Red Dragon. It’s like a cheddar flavored with mustard seed and ale - fantastic!
Fruit: Fruit was often served as a dessert, especially baked or stewed. Dried fruit can be a part of the rations an adventurer might eat on the road. Apples were one of the only commonly cultivated fruit, but far more were available wild. Pears, peaches, raspberries, strawberries, and many more could be had, but they were rarely served fresh. It would be much more common to find them cooked and packed in honey, or to be served in pies, fooles, and other desserts. They were also often paired with vegetables or meats in different ways. The cookbook “Forme of Cury” from the 14th century includes a recipe for carrots and pears combined, for example. Here’s a recipe for stewed pears in wine that makes a lovely dessert for your medieval meal: http://www.godecookery.com/goderec/grec26.htm
Meat: Yes, there were all kinds of vegetable dishes, but we’re starting to realize that there was probably more meat on the medieval dinner table than was originally thought. All kinds of poultry were served (including things we don’t generally eat now, like swan), all manner of seafood, beef, pork, goat, sheep, venison, and plenty more. One very common item would be cold, sliced meats served with a dipping sauce. You could serve chicken or sliced pork roast with a flavorful sauce, and this would be very authentic. I’m including here a recipe for Lumbard Mustard, one of my favorites. This is super simple, but it’s delicious, and it keeps for ages if you store it in a covered jar. Serve it in a bowl alongside pieces of cold chicken or slices of pork.
Stew: I mean, it’s hard to go wrong with stew. A tavern would likely take the roasted meat they hadn’t sold the night before and toss it into a stewpot to serve the next day. The folks behind the (very excellent) Cookbook of Ice and Fire have a recipe for a beef and barley stew on their website at https://www.innatthecrossroads.com/beef-barley-stew-2-2/
Pies: Yes, they can be dessert, but savory pies were very common as well. One of my absolutely favorite recipes of any kind of an ancient recipe for mushroom and cheese pie that you can find at http://www.godecookery.com/goderec/grec21.htm If you’re as lucky as me, you might have a local bakery that makes and sells savory pies, such as Thwaites Market in Methuen, MA.
Drink: If this is meant to be a tavern, you could stock beer, ale, wine, mead, and whatever else tickles your fancy. Just make sure you all stay sober enough to play the game after!
If you want to expand beyond this, there are several websites and cookbooks I strong recommend. Godecookery.com is an incredible resource of translations of legitimate medieval cooking and modern recipes that feel like they fit the genre without having a specific historical source. I’ve cooked plenty of meals using recipes from this site. For fantasy based recipes, I recommend Heroes Feast: The Official D&D Cookbook, a Cookbook of Ice and Fire: the Official Game of Thrones Cookbook, and The Unexpected Cookbook: the Unofficial Book of Hobbit Cookery. All three are full of excellent recipes, and all of them have great cooking advice, ideas on how to pair items together, and so on.
I hope this got you salivating to do some food prep for your game. Until next time, may your game be a feast for the senses.

The Rugby World Cup Table
Tumblr media
In France, there is something specific to Rugby we call "la troisième mi-temps" (third half-time), where both winning and losing teams and supporters gather after a game for a bite and a pint! In that spirit, as our home World Cup comes to a close tonight, I am celebrating all the teams that took part and played exciting, enthralling rugby (sometimes breaking our hearts!) all across France this past couple of months, sharing recipes from all the countries represented. I really enjoyed delving into national cuisines I did not know, and perhaps some future travels will be inspired by these delicious discoveries! In the meantime, I'll be happy eating, whether New Zealand or South Africa lifts their fourth Webb Ellis Trophy!
