I occasionally see posts/get messages about the various harry potter references in the bright sessions, etc. and I've gotten a bunch of new followers recently so just so any new/younger listeners of my shows know:

jk rowling is a terrible transphobe whom I hold zero respect for and I haven't given a dime of my money to her since she revealed who she truly is. I want the whole bright universe to be a safe space for trans people (including the trans folks in our cast and crew!) and if I could go back and remove those references, I would. but I can't! harry potter was an extremely significant part of my life until...well, until it became very clear who she really was. it makes me so sad to think that folks might be finding TBS now and get thrown out of the story by these references, but just know that the people who made the show do not stand by jk, and that in many ways, the show is a product of its time.

I wanted to give her a chance to learn and grow #and she did....not do that #but TAMA was written in that little grace period #and then a few references in TCT were taken out during recording bc june of 2020 was when she really started to go mask off #and so we were making changes in real time #we didn't know what to do about quidditch #bc we were like 'this is a sport that people play in college and it's just called that?' #'and it's already canon that caleb plays?' #and it wasn't called quadball yet #anyway not trying to make excuses! #just know that none of those references were put in with any malice #and I guess I *could* go back and rerecord all those lines and replace them #but I know enough about my original audio engineering to know that it woudl be VERY hard to make it sound natural #and idk I do think there's something to be said for not covering up errors in old work #I'm not going to try to pretend HP wasn't important to me #EDIT: I've turned off reblogs for this post #also this is not me trying to tell other people how to approach their own HP fandom #fanworks especially - there's no benefiting jo in that - and I think it's totally legit for ppl to want to take HP as their own!

#i am proud and happy about it because this blog came from my moving blogs in 2021 #and on my past blog i had about 1000 followers so it’s like i finally regained that reach #which i’m specifically excited by because this blog (contrary to my previous one) is ONLY about the witcher books with no n*tflix talk #like ik ohhh ‘you are a fandom blog you have no rights’ but it makes me happy that we’re all gathered here together for the same thing :) #i don’t think fandom has to be an inherently toxic or immature space i think it can be a meaningful place of discussion and participation #the elbow-high diaries #updates #it’s kind of an interesting thing the witcher books fandom in english in the 2020s i am really very curious where it goes from here #it’s interesting to me because it’s such a specific and unique situation of media spread #it’s not like the witcher is unpopular or indie—it’s extremely popular. a mass pop culture phenomenon #at the same time the english-speaking (and in my case specifically american) fandom is primarily built around tw3 and then now n*tflix #even if the books were read and successful in the english market i mean they did not have the same kind of cultural impact #so it’s particularly of interest to me to boost visibility and yes indeed—fandom—conversation around the witcher books #and for me i like thinking through what that looks like— #an english-speaking (including not limited to american) fandom without anglifying or americanizing it #or at the very least *trying* to not anglify or americanize it. because some amount of it is unintentional yet necessary (i.e. translation) #but even in translation for example. the kind of translation and how it’s gone about. there is potential for cultural learning and #the most faithful translations will not make total sense so as the readers you go and look for that context and learn something #all part of a larger discussion and i kind of got lost typing these tags but this is why this milestone is special to me #it shows that people are interested in what this blog posts about and that means we have a future to explore

So Vivienne’s wonderful and I love her forever

I stan her “well have you considered getting good” approach to literally everything in her life

She is very much still in the stage of “I shall bend the system to my will”, which is an interesting illustration of why she’s the only First Enchanter around right now;

The others have all been at it long enough to notice that the system is designed and built with Vivienne specifically in mind (and others like her)

An oppressive system does not survive decades without major internal dampeners to turn or break every single ambitious star that seeks to rise and make it their own

And it’s already working on her

Kirkwall is the bad Circle, but it’s an outlier; never mind that every single Circle has the potential to become as bad or worse, based only on which templars rise to control it

The ones she’s met are perfectly lovely, obedient little guards, and she has no complaints with her own treatment (which she ensures for herself by being a powerhouse and political goddess, something absolutely anyone could definitely do for sure don’t think too hard about it)

She’s seen the “good” outcome, so she thinks the system works because it’s working for her, and she can play within the bounds of the system… and she’s not exactly concerned with helping up those behind her

The interesting part is that she’s also not entirely wrong in her issues with the rebel mages; most of the other mages aren’t at court, and didn’t see the rising danger in public opinion that Vivienne did

(And they’re all likely a lot more affected by the restrictions than Vivienne, who only goes to the Circle when she wants to and lives where she likes)

She couldn’t understand their perspective on the suffering because… yeah, this was not a great time for the mages to rebel. Right after a possessed mage murdered hundreds?

Vivienne’s right; it makes them look like they care more for their comfort than the lives of citizens, because most of the citizens don’t know the conditions the mages endure

(Most citizens are part of the shitty conditions the mages endure, but again, Vivienne’s not had rocks thrown at her for being a mage)

The thing is that there would never be a politically acceptable time to rebel. That’s why it’s a rebellion, not a polite request

There would never be a single, perfect time that no one would spin to be about the mages being selfish and caring about their comfort over lives

Now is not a good time, but the other mages aren’t choosing it because they’re impatient and don’t want to wait

They’re rebelling now because they have been pushed beyond endurance by the templars (who still have not dealt with their own rogue people wandering around and murdering random civilians, but shhhhh don’t think about that, only mages are hurting the innocent for sure)

Vivienne can’t see their urgency because she doesn’t live that life, and because the system is already busily wrapping her in a shroud of comfort

Her actual view of what she wants for the Circles is still good; a safe place for mages to learn and come together

Magic schools, protected from superstitious populace by the templars (which requires a complete 180 turn of thinking by the templars themselves on if the mages are prisoners or people)

Maybe even some basic fucking protections to stop people from getting possessed, which literally everyone needs anyway because we’re living in wood and thatch houses and every single civilian has access to fire

EVERYONE is dangerous when possessed, mages just scale up faster the more powerful they are, but the more powerful they are the harder they should be to break

Unless they’re broken and mistreated and ground down until they buy into the “us against them” that the templars and citizens force on them, and stop caring if their tormentors are hurt

Which, again, is why Vivienne’s vision for the Circles cannot be realised under the system as it stands

As long as the Circles are a place to lock up mages so they can’t hurt “good, normal people”, someone will abuse it

And the person who abuses it the most, gets their mages the most “under control”, rises to the top on a tower of magic

And the rot spreads

And when you’re on the inside, but at the top? Not being stepped on but treated with respect and reverence? Well, how hard can it be to stay there all the time? Surely they can just wait for a better time to be free

The game’s trying so fucking hard to push its “Not All Templars” agenda but it’s actually only highlighting just how flawed this logic is, and I am FASCINATED with how perfectly they’ve replicated an oppressive system without even meaning to

They so clearly want you to buy the “not all templars are bad like not all mages are good”, but the problem’s right there on the surface:

The mages are dealing with their problems

They don’t want to get possessed either, and nor does anyone else

The templars are pretending their problems don’t exist

That they don’t need to deal with every rogue templar wearing their banner, drinking their lyrium, murdering random villagers and nobles left and right

You’re literally not allowed to even bring it up to the head seeker when he’s off grandstanding

Every mage who tells you “well not all the templars are bad” tattoos respectability politics on the insides of your eyelids because that’s the whole actual problem:

It doesn’t matter if not all the templars are bad. What matters is that the good templars cannot or do not try to stop the bad ones

The bad ones are the ones in power, making the rules

Good people who follow bad rules are complicit

A rotten apple only spoils the barrel if you leave it in there to fester

Anyway Vivienne > Cullen all day every day because

1) queen of Step On Me energy

And 2) we do not blame the actions of oppressors on the oppressed, even when they are propping up the same oppressive system

Also all the templars being mandatory drug addicts is a fucking wild twist and I can’t wait to see where that goes, I am blaming it for Cullen’s weird pinchy redness around his eyes and nose

constantly being in online arguments absolutely affects your mood and how you treat people in real life

being under that level of stress and agitation that often is extremely unhealthy. if you're constantly seeking out arguments, it most likely means you're trying to distract from stressors in your life with other stressors that are easier to control.

I'm not saying never stand up for yourself or argue with people at all, just don't make discourse the primary way you use the internet.

genuinely feel awful for what happened to kwite. i can't possibly imagine what he went through, being forced to reveal incredibly sensitive details about his private life, identity, and deepest insecurities to thousands of people for this. this has nothing to do with me, i literally only found out about everything today, but it's just such a terrible experience and i honestly hope he takes the time he needs to recover.

it's honestly something so far down the priorities list that i feel guilty for even thinking about it but i admit that, selfishly, i would genuinely be upset if he doesn't return to youtube. however, I know that that is not my decision nor his responsibility. it is completely understandable and valid if he decides to leave, for any reason. i just hope that whatever he decides to do, he does it for his own sake and safety.

Fangs have altered my brain chemistry and drawing them is all I think about 💙

But as for using my art for your own study, I am flattered you think my art is even usable for reference material frankly 🫢 However, if you haven't already, I would advise studying from photo references of both human and canid dental models first; especially if Aloysha's teeth are the sort of aesthetic you're going for! You really need to know what your subject matter actually looks like before you can translate it into artwork with confidence.

Studying from another artist is useful to a degree, as they have already gone through the work of simplifying and stylising the subject matter, and that can help a lot with figuring out your own style! But ultimately, nothing really compares to studying from the real thing. I mostly study wolf skulls and teeth as reference for Aloysha!

Making sharp teeth look belieavable in a human mouth relies on knowing what both animal teeth and human teeth look like, the different types and shapes of teeth, how they are spaced out in the jaw-what those teeth are actually for, even! Little details like that can influence and inform how you draw teeth and make them seem a lot more "correct" than they would otherwise ✨️

I am nowhere near a professional or an authority of course, but I feel imparting the advice and tips that have helped me might help you too! And I think that will help a lot more than looking at my art, as you will likely pick up mistakes I myself make by doing so 😂 but if you are still struggling after doing some photo study, then some light referencing won't hurt ✨️ obviously as long as my art isn't being directly copied or traced (for works that will be published especially), I don't have too many qualms.

I looked through old art and I think I needed that

#the passion for the craft #the person i used to be #the steps I've made #even comparing between different times in my life #i will always regret those years in between where i barely touched a pen but it's also no use dwelling on it #i actually found something worthwhile in pieces from 2020 and 2021 as well #i struggled with colouring (as usual) but the lineart and the details and the ideas i put into those #i think i sometimes took the wrong turn when i pursued something i thought other people would want to see #instead of utilising what i was kinda good at #this whole stick of running after the approval of others really fucked with me #I'll never get everyones approval #I'll probably never even get a lot of approval lbr #but if i don't quit running after other people and trying desperately to please I'll never figure out what I actually want to do #what I'm good at and what i can say and portray with my art #i think i need to learn to follow my heart and my path #nothing else I've done has really worked out for me so i can at least make one person happy with what i do #maybe then I'll finally put something i made on my wall as well lol
