CALLE REAL, ILOILO, PHILIPPINES (May 18, 2022) I was invited to Iloilo to deliver a talk during the graduation of Senior High School students of Ateneo de Iloilo, but decided to come two days sooner to enjoy some sights there that I had never seen. And I’m glad I did. Not even the cab driver knew where Calle Real was. I guess that’s because the street is officially named J.M. Basa even if Calle Real better suits it. It is, after all, located in the old downtown district of the city and is likened to Manila’s Escolta. I alighted at the one end of the road and walked the rest. Famous during the Spanish era, the street was recently given more life by the Iloilo Cultural Foundation, which initiated the restoration of several buildings in the area. These building once belonged to the elite of Iloilo, who took residence on the upper floors while their businesses flourished on the first. It is easy to imagine how bustling the area must have been then. Calle Real and Escolta are the only two heritage central business districts in the Philippines that still stand.

SAN JOAQUIN CHURCH, ILOILO, PHILIPPINES (May 20, 2022) It was the last church that we traveled to that morning. Joao, my personal tour guide, was not planning to head to San Joaquin, but he said: what the heck. Who knew when I would be back in Iloilo? I was there already, and a few extra kilometers to visit this beauty was worth it.  The church is unique in that it is the only one in the country with a bas-relief that features a military battle scene. A little difficult to discern, but yes, it’s there. It is said that after the Hispano-Moroccan war of 1860, Fray Tomas Santaren had instructed stonemasons to carve the bas-relief upon learning of the Spanish triumph against the Moroccans. His father, after all, was part of the Spanish cavalry. In 1980, the National Historical Institute marked the church as a National Historical Site. And in 2001, it was declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines. We had all of 10 minutes to tour the place. Joao and I were late for our lunch appointment.

MIAGAO CHURCH, ILOILO, PHILIPPINES (May 20, 2022) I was headed for Iloilo upon the invitation from Ateneo de Iloilo to address their Senior High School students during their commencement exercises. I had planned to stay for four days but wrongly waited until the last minute to plan my sightseeing. At the top of my must-see list was Miagao Church, but by the time I came around to booking my tour, no more slots were available on May 20. Thankfully, Ateneo’s president had also arranged for me to visit Iloilo’s famed churches on my preferred date. Happy camper me! Also called Santo Tomás de Villanueva Parish Church, Miagao Church was completed in 1797 at the town’s highest point. Apart from bringing together parishioners in the area, it also served as a fortress against Moro invaders who came in frequently via the Panay Gulf. It is famous for the intricate sculptural relief on its facade, which features a towering coconut tree. Beneath it is St. Christopher dressed in local grab, carrying the Child Jesus on his back. On both sides of the facade are bell towers of unequal heights and distinctly different designs as each was commissioned by different priests during the church’s history. Among the country’s best baroque churches, Miagao Church is included in the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
