wanted to join in on that meta post by saying yeah, even if we view joker’s and akechi’s relationship as special compared to the others, akechi is still written under the constraints of p5, and an antagonist to boot. like. vanilla had his confidant as automatic bc (iirc) they thought they couldn’t fit it in properly! which is crazy, even tho the automatic rank ups have an interesting implication (such as, akechi will always be rank 10 by the end no matter what you do). i understand that ppl probably wanted someone to talk sense into the thieves for their unwittingly callous actions, but not by the guy who decided to go thru with his 11/20 plan lol

YEAH like, I love Akechi. I adore him. But I have SO many OPINIONS about this mans. like. I'm not going berate anyone for how they write characters, that's the freedom of fandom, but I am going to stand over here with my opinions and contrary thoughts and chitchat about them in my space

I know that very often it is because people want someone to refute what canon has shown us (because canon's writing disagrees with it's desired goals as mentioned in that post). They want someone to go "Look at Joker, look at what's happened to him, don't you care? How risky this was?"

But okay I'm actually going to back up a bit!

What other choice was there for 11/20?

Because the answer is not "they could have taken Akechi in a fight."

The goals of the interrogation room/metaverse plan:

Escape with Joker alive

Trick Shido and the conspiracy into believing Joker has died

and you know? you know? you cannot do that latter bullet point if you just beat up Akechi

So enlighten me. How, exactly, were the thieves supposed to come up with a different plan in under 20 days? One where Joker would live, where the conspiracy would believe he had died, and importantly, one that at that point in time cannot count on Akechi being a turncoat. They have no reason to trust that he would

"Don't you care about how risky this was? There had to have been other ways."

We don't get Shido's name as Akechi's employer here until after the phonecall reporting the death, I believe. They cannot change Shido's heart in time to avert this because they do not have the information. The interrogation room plan, genuinely, was one of the smartest ideas they had. It accomplished exactly what they needed to. These are teens in a life-or-death situation, who notoriously have MANY trust issues with adults for good reason, especially since society is so corrupt that a hitman can easily walk into a police department and assassinate a high-profile criminal and get away with it with help (remember the guard at the door?) The other options are basically "change your identity and flee the country" or "literally actually die" lets be real here!

SO

Akechi, let's be honest with ourselves here, would primarily be pissed off that the thieves got one over on him! And if he is concerned about the lasting trauma of it all, or how risky the plan was, he is seeing this and approaching it from the angle of knowing it worked.

(Better options for sense-talking: Sojiro! Sojiro is right there! Takemi! Iwai! Kawakami! Yoshida! All important responsible adult figures to Joker and at least some of the thieves.)

In my opinion if Akechi wants to snark at the thieves about the plan in any way regarding how much it fucks up Joker and how it was risky, they are more than allowed to fire back shots at him for making it necessary and shooting Joker in the head in the first place.

I think people often use it as a shorthand, to show that Akechi cares about Joker, but also as a way to emphasize the importance of Akechi to Joker (compared to the rest of the thieves). It's easier to ignore the fact that he killed two of the thieves's parents when it comes to Joker being in a relationship with him, as long as it can be shown that he's the one that really cares. That he wouldn't put Joker through something so fucked up with his care (hilarious, laughable, he shot Joker in the head). It separates "Akechi and Joker" from all the phantom thieves in a way.

(Honestly sometimes it feels like ship bashing/character bashing but for ALL the phantom thieves with how intensely some people write it! beyond even the point of exploring Atlus fucking up characterization to pretend to have a blank slate silent protag)

BUT like I said in the post, it also points out a major flaw with convincing players that the rest of the thieves DO care in the game. Because the thieves are never really given a chance to show that. It's implied, and it's clear the game wants you to believe they care, but we don't get scenes addressing specific stuff like this enough.

Joker is confident, and cocky, we see that with that bastard smile in the interrogation room after getting "shot" in those cutscenes. It is genuinely a plan to be proud of, and it hails back to his original persona being Arsène. Arsène, who escaped from prison simply by disguising himself and pretending he had already escaped and put a body double in his place. Arsène, who pulled off a robbery while in jail. Arrogant and self-assured and cocky, the interrogation room plan is genuinely something the likes that would be worthy of Arsène's name.

He can be proud of the plan, and also traumatized by it. But he actively agreed to this plan, probably helped come up with it (where does everyone get the idea that it was Makoto's plan? genuine question). Joker is not a hapless victim of other's whims, he also had agency. So many of the parallels between Joker and Akechi are how they exercise what agency they have while being stripped of traditional power and victimized by society.

Honestly? Honestly? In my personal opinion, having Akechi berate the thieves for the plan is disrespectful to his rivalry with Joker, along with his own characterization.

He holds Joker as his equal. Equal in agency, in skill. If he looks at Joker and says, "why would you go along with such a foolish plan?" if he looks at the thieves and says "why would you ever put your precious leader through this?" he is taking away Joker's agency and choices. One of Akechi's focal points is agency. If he sees Joker as equal in this, and he denies Joker his agency, he is also taking it away from himself.

Akechi's cocktail of emotions regarding the assassination can manifest in so many different ways, and he can translate that to anger at the thieves rather than himself for putting Joker through that, but that would be his emotions regarding himself being misdirected more than anything.

Akechi has too much respect for Joker to deny Joker his agency in a plan that was good enough to fool him.

Respecting agency and admiring a brilliantly crafted plan also doesn't mean ignoring trauma that ocurred from actions taken under duress.

(At least, it doesn't mean that as long as you're not Atlus)

okay so. long post incoming

took these notes while reading countdown about jason todd cuz ive seen some fandom stuff from it (wrt him being friends with kyle and donna) and figured i should see what his personality is like.

first of all, i could see jason being friends (or like. not hated) by donna a lot easier than kyle. already analyzed her opinion on him here (link) whereas kyle just consistently couldn't stand him.

he starts out doing superhero-adjacent activities. in countdown 51 jason yells at duela for threatening (and possibly planning to kill) an innocent teen idol. He does shoot her parachute twice, unclear if he intends on killing her (duela) or not. he later shows up to her funeral.

In general, he seems like... un-intellectually curious. like he just takes the monitors (in countdown 51) one of whom killed duela dent and tried to kill him, and the other one of whom saved him, in hand. jimmy olson (in countdown 50) is like “don’t you think that’s strange” but jason just says “it’s a strange world”. he seems almost anti detective here

they journey into the nano/palmerverse (Seemed to be alternating what they were calling it) and the inhabitants are pissed at ryan choi’s atom costume. donna wants to try talking jason jumps straight to violence

Jason generally seems unconcerned with other people. when kyle gets lost and they have to move on, he’s kind of like “whatever”. then in countdown 28 when monarch and his guys are attacking lord havok (context: Lord havok IIRC did capture and torture him, donna and kyle) he is like

Him being okay with Lord Havok and his random dudes dying seems pretty consistent with most Jason stuff, in that he doesn’t care if people he views as evil die and well. lord havok was not a nice person.

He also doesn’t seem to care too much about good people dying (or being left to whatever fate) tho as seen by kyle and more stuff later on.

and either he is sure but wrong or does not care, but he is saying that once someone is omac-i-fied they are stuck that way and as good as dead... despite the fact that last time omacs were around, we saw the characters revert to their human form after attacking (tahts why the justice league went thru great pains to find a non-lethal way to deal with the omacs in omac crisis, besides the general non-lethal policy. eitehr way in this comic, the character who is omac-i-fied, Una, does un-omac so... he was totally down to kill someone innocent.

which TBH this could be pretty consistent with his character because while pre new 52 jason generally seems extremely anti redemption (in notable contrast to other batfam members). that’s part of the whole deal of killing the bad guys. they were bad, they can’t ever be not bad and the cost of them hurting someone again is too great so they got to go. here even if una didn’t choose to do this, she’s a threat at the moment, so the risk of trying to rescue her is too great, so she’s got to go.

again another case wehre he’s extremely casual about people dying for hte greater good but i think in this case he’s actually right (however i think he’s mostly right on accident, more on that later)

he didn’t even wait to hear why karate kid might have to die he was like “oh dang u convinced me” before atom was even done talking

of course atom is validated because bringing karate kid’s dead body to a parallel earth winds up destroying that entire earth (and universe?) via the virus. but atom was the one who was talking about this w/ knowledge, jason was the one who was willing to kill him in ignorance (which does tie into jason’s later actions when he murders 80 people via poison in a prison, unable to control who he would kill just ok with it...)

should be noted though it seems that way at the start, with jason doing vaguely superhero adjacent stuff and him being horrified by earth 51 bruce’s actions (killing joker and a bunch of other rogues) this is definitely not like a transformation or redemption arc for jason. he ends right where he started.

none of this is intended to be jason negative or jason positive, its mostly for my own future reference on his character

SM Gods: AKA the Catz Meme and Get Deleted Many M a n y Times

we cleared SM Gods for the first time since 7.0 dropped <3333

that op's like. a Catz Special™ and I missed it so much. that's our "screw around and de-stress" op where we don't give a fuck about parses and can just do stupid stuff

and of course, there were Memes To Be Had

we ran it last night too, but got deleted on Scyva. and by that point, it was too late for me to go on since I had work in the morning and my wrist was acting up. so we called it a night

then tonight, after our team ran, we decided to try again. our new team member has never run Gods, sooooo

in true Catz fashion, we Had to drag him in. we found a pug healer on fleet, and the rest were guildies

the pug and new team member didn't know what was going on, but that just made it fun! we love running Gods newbies thru and vc was just constant laughter

Tyth: new guy followed us with much confusion off the cliff after boss went down. healer ran in circles trying to avoid the MANY adds still up before we remembered to tell them to just jump off cause we don't like cleaning up our messes

Sisters: while Rhekke (main healer) and Gham (Sin DPS) were explaining fight, I (Viru Sniper, surprise surprise) was jumping around like a dumbass. I may or may not have jumped off the arena to my death and respawned at the pug's feet. they stood there looking at me for a second before rezzing

Anto was solo tanking, so I ended up taking aggro of the boss she didn't have (I think I took Aivela, and she had Esne). uhhhhh I forgot sniper DCDs got big-time nerfed just long enough to get murdered in last phase. I was also Not a Pro Wipers Caller like I usually am and I am Ashamed. new guy almost? did? die to them cause I wasn't calling colors like I usually do

Nahut: ...was Nahut. we wiped once. because HOLY SHIT Gods got updated and tank can't take all the rail shots in SM anymore so Anto got deleted and it just kinda fell apart from there

second pull, Rhekke was trying to show us that if you AOE/stealth scan in just the right spot, you'll find where Nahut's hiding and start the fight. well. they were on the outer ring. if you don't know what happens when you're on outer ring when fight starts, we'll just say "goodbye healer" and leave it at that. that pull was a wipe, too

our successful pull, we had to actually pass the candle so rail shot wouldn't murder anyone

well. toilet bowl comes first, my friends. and surprisingly, it went really well which is unheard of for us. no one died???? (last night, Gham sorc-pulled Rhekke - THE SHIELD HOLDER - to their death as they were crossing the last bridge, tho ajksl;asjlkds)

we were trying to get the shortcut set up, however - just in case we wiped. when we reached it Rhekke very sternly told us not to touch anything or we'd kill someone

....then proceeded to crush the pug - and ONLY the pug - with a door 😂

they felt SO BAD and vc was DYING laughing. they ended up trading the pug credits for all the repairs akldsjal;d

Scyva deleted us once. we uh. can't really stack under her anymore. extinction protocol Hurts A Lot now. it doesn't just kill one unfortunate person anymore. it murders ALL of us if we don't get tf outta the red

first pull, Rhekke and the last dps standing got her literally to 100k health before she killed them

second pull went a lot better. ...for most of us. the other sniper (actually slinger but sniper main = I Will default to that) and I both got Instant Lag when extinction went out. we both were dead in seconds because neither of us could move. but the rest of the group was able to kill her with a few more deaths claiming the group

puzzle to Izax went Surprisingly Well

it hurt a little more than I'm used to because I feel squishier now and don't have any self-heals, but we got it pretty quick while new guy watched us with Much Confusion (we tried explaining it as we went, but we're Not Good at explaining Gods mechanics)

iirc we wiped once pretty early on, but then got it the second pull

I explained what I could in vc to new guy, and Rhekke summed it up in chat for pug, but I just outright told the guy that it was A Lot to explain, so just stick with the group and watch raid announcements

induction cascade at end of first phase screwed someone over and he Immediately got yeeted off the tower

new guy and pug were trying their damndest to stick with the group, but they died

there's... also something really wrong??? with the cannon??? that huge attack Izax does, where healers have to make sure everyone's 100% before it goes out? new guy WAS at 100, AND was being healed, but he got obliterated and most of the rest of us were really close to dead, too (we'd all been fully healed up too)

halfway thru I ended up dying because I was dropping puddles and Rhekke was busy doing puzzle stuff and I ran out of DCDs. so I had to wait for a rez to come off cooldown

I will say that it’s super interesting looking back on this, in the sense that rewind & chromedome are introduced as the first ever gay tf couple, and a few issues after we get told this explicitly, rewind is killed. this doesn't really end up being an issue representation-wise bc literally everyone is gay and there are a bunch of other significant gay characters/relationships later on, AND rewind comes back later 

but still! it’s interesting to think about how, at the time this came out, the phrase/concept ‘bury your gays’ wasn't really something that was talked about a lot (or like, it was, but not as often as nowadays, and not really under the term ‘bury your gays’ iirc), but at the time of publication this would have fallen under that trope (though rewind coming back later negates it imo). I think it would've been tough for this story to come out nowadays due to the backlash that would've occurred from rewind’s initial death (it also makes me wonder if there was any backlash when this DID come out) 

to be clear, this isn't a writing criticism - in fact, the reason this is able to work at all is because of the crazy amount of representation mtmte has. it’s like, youre able to kill off gay characters without it being ‘bury your gays’ if literally all your characters are gay by default, and there are a bunch of significant gay relationships happening - technically speaking, any death in mtmte is bury your gays lmao 

this is a completely disjointed rant but my point is like, if this issue came out in 2020 people would probably be pretty put off by rewind dying (understandably), but in the context of the series as a whole I don't consider this to be bad writing/bad representation/bury your gays 

and like, WERE people really mad about this in 2013? I am curious now, bc I would definitely feel kinda betrayed if I didn't know all the stuff that happens later 

but its pretty nice, because now I'm free to enjoy the writing and be emotionally devastated by rewinds death in a normal way, and not a ‘I'm angry at the writers for killing off one of the only gay characters’ kinda way

last night i had a dream about like, hanging out at a pool or something

and then i was in a huge department store/grocery store/cafeteria and there was some sort of thing going on where we all got into groups to do something but idk what it was. my group was eating loaded potato flavored pringles and i was like i need real sour cream on this so i started looking around for sour cream, and then i ended up becoming sabre-2??? (my destiny character) and going thru this like, side-scroller game

when i got out i was in my dream library (as in like, the library i consistently have dreams about) and i was looking at this one book i forget what it was about but there was like, a dog a duck and a rabbit on it iirc and it was a genre similar to warrior cats

i was gonna take it with me but i was like wait i have to check it out first and decided i didnt want to go through the effort so i just put it back and left

so i was walking (and i could see the dream school thats usually nearby it in the distance which is neat, i can tell by the extremely long and tall brick wall thats part of the staircase leading up to it)

and i was talking to some lady and we went into a super tiny mcdonalds (which i have also had dreams about before) and by tiny i mean like, its a square-shape and the room is wide enough for a small two-person table on the window side and a single person by the counter-side

and there were like six folks lined up and the lady sat down to make room so i decided to leave since it was too crowded

so i left and was looking for somewhere else to eat when i remembered i lost my face mask and so my goal became to look for a new face mask

so i got to what looked like an outdoor mall but i walked thru a door and it was actually an indoor mall, and i just started going around holding my shirt over my face looking for masks. every place i looked either the masks were a solid color and boring to me, or super intricate and way too expensive and i woke up without ever finding a mask 😔

also the store with the super cool but expensive masks was like a makeup, jewelry and head accessory store and it had these like graduation caps with a small plush sans on top and they were called Sans Little Buddy Headbands LMFAO

tl;dr: tbh not much to go off on about. i think we see a new skin for Iron Bear, one with some stripes. amara smiles, i do talk a little bit about little sisters in bioshock but tbh i think this was all just a stylistic choice lol. oh and handsome jack’s masks- probably Mount Jackmore. i don’t want to get to freaked out over jack returning, but damn gearbox lol u had me there for a second. im pretty sure it’s just a reused cut quest from bl2 that they never got to implement.
