Summary: With the stress of Jennifer Baker threatening to sue the hospital, Will finds himself making career-altering mistakes and friendship-ending comments. The trauma of losing his mother was hitting him harder than he expected. After a particularly sensitive conversation with Natalie, he finds himself rushing to see her.
--
The energy in the ED was something just under hostile. The tension could practically be sliced with a knife, and a large one at that. Will Halstead screwed the pooch with the Baker family, wrongfully convincing the husband to retract his wife’s DNR. Not that he’d ever admit it, though.
One thing that made Will an excellent doctor was his persistence in ensuring that his patients received the best of care, even if he had to bust someone’s balls to get it done. He truly believed that he had good intentions in persuading Zoe, the new pharmaceutical representative, to make an exception for the dying woman on a drug trial she’d mentioned. Nosy nurses and even some of their fellow doctors would’ve argued that Will went as far as he did with the drug trial because he had gotten quite friendly with the pharm rep.
Hearing these rumors made his blood boil. That was the furthest thing from the truth. When Will looked at Jennifer Baker, he didn’t see a patient that hated him. He saw his mother. The red-headed doctor watched his mother give up on her cancer treatment, and he couldn’t watch it again. He made his way to the elevator with a mission in mind, unknowingly being spotted by Dr. Manning.
“Will!” She called, chasing after him.
The sound of her voice stopped him in his tracks. He spun around to face her with a pained expression. This entire situation was killing him, but she didn’t know why.
“Will,” she repeated. “What’s going on?”
He let out an exasperated sigh as he tried to gather his thoughts.
“I can’t watch that woman die, Nat. I can’t just sit back and do nothing as she leaves her child motherless.”
Natalie reached out and placed a hand on his arm.
“That’s not your call to make. Jennifer has tried everything to beat this, but she’s done. She just wants it to be over.” She explained.
“How can you say that? With a brand new baby at home, you can’t see why I’m still pushing for this? She has to keep fighting.” Will pressed.
She took in a sharp breath, not expecting such a rash reaction from her attending doctor.
“Will, don’t-,” she tried.
“No, come on, Nat. As a parent you should want to do everything in your power to be there for your child. I was hoping that you of all people would get that,” he said, turning back around and stepping into the elevator.
“Don’t expect me to save you, Will,” she spat.
“I don’t expect to need saving,” the red-haired doctor called over his shoulder.
Natalie couldn’t describe what she was feeling. She was hurt by Will’s words, especially because they came from him. He’s been so supportive of her ever since Jeff’s death. They’d become really close over the past couple of months, some would suggest they’d gotten too close. She’d even had similar thoughts recently, contemplating that his motives were more than platonic. Still, she couldn’t think about that right now.
She walked towards the elevator, knowing she wouldn’t be able to catch him before he got to the Baker family, but she could get to Ms. Goodwin’s office. As the elevator brought her to another floor, she tried to calm her nerves. She didn’t want to bring administration into this, but she didn’t have a choice.
“Ms. Goodwin?” She asked, poking her head into the woman’s office.
“Yes, Dr. Manning, come in.”
Natalie stepped into the office, wringing her hands as she carefully considered her words.
“What can I help you with?” Her boss asked.
Natalie let out a nervous sigh, bringing a hand up to her head.
“I think Will- er, Dr. Halstead is currently on his way to doing something very stupid, both for the hospital and his career.”
“Goodnight, Dr. Manning,” the ED charge nurse called.
Natalie looked over her shoulder, waving at her friend.
“Goodnight, Maggie.”
She walked to her car, trying to forget the stressful workday and leave it behind her as she walked away from the hospital. The drive was uneventful, as she’d mostly zoned out during the entire thing, relying on muscle memory to bring her home.
She didn’t really pay attention to where she was until she was walking up the stairs of her apartment building, careful not to trip over one of them. The brunette sighed as she fumbled with her keys, searching for the right one. As she finally selected the appropriate key, she heard the sound of someone coming up the steps she’d just ventured. Assuming it was one of her neighbors, she didn’t think anything of it, and went to unlock her door.
“Natalie,” a voice called.
She turned towards the sound of her name, practically startled to see the last man she wanted to be around right now. He had a desperate look in his eyes, and another emotion written across his face that Natalie couldn’t quite read.
“Will,” she nearly gasped. “What are- what are you doing here?”
He ran a hand through his messy curls, disheveling them even further. Whatever was on his mind was eating at him.
“Ms. Goodwin came to me. I, uh, I’ve been suspended for a few days.”
She dropped her shoulders, feeling bad for him. Part of her wanted to feel guilty for reporting him to Sharon, but she didn’t feel that she had a choice. Will was on a fast track to doing something that would cost him his career, and she couldn’t stand by and let it happen.
“Will, I’m so sorry. I went to Ms. Goodwin and told her everything. I was only trying to help,” she admitted.
He shook his head.
“I know, I know. It’s okay. Look, I just wanted to come by and apologize for the way I spoke to you today. You didn’t deserve that, especially from me.”
She crossed her arms over her chest, tilting her head as a concerned look spread over her face.
“Why don’t we go inside? We can sit down and talk. Helen won’t be home with Owen for another hour or so,” Natalie offered.
He hesitated for a moment, not knowing if this was a boundary they should cross. Finally, he nodded and followed her into the apartment. She set her purse down on the kitchen counter and grabbed two glasses from a cupboard, filling them with water. On any other night, she would’ve been desperate for a glass of wine and a relaxing bath, but alcohol was the last thing Will needed.
She guided him over to the living room, expecting him to take a seat on the couch. Instead, he took a seat on the floor in front of it, letting his head fall back onto the cushion.
“What’s going on, Will? What’s with you and this family?”
He let out a sigh, squeezing his eyes shut for a moment before opening them, staring at the ceiling. After what felt like a lifetime, he opened his mouth to speak.
“My mother. I saw my mom when I looked at Jennifer Baker.”
Natalie paused, trying to understand.
“Your mother?” She asked.
He nodded, taking a moment to breathe before continuing.
“She, uh, she died a couple of years ago. My dad was too preoccupied with getting wasted in his spare time and Jay was deployed overseas, so it was just me taking care of her.”
His voice was shaky as he recalled the memories that he’d clearly tried to forget about. Natalie desperately wanted to reach out to put a comforting hand on his shoulder, but she wasn’t sure if they were there yet.
“And then her illness got worse. She became s-so weak and fatigued, but there wasn’t anything else that they could do,” he started. “There were no experimental drugs that she could try. But Mrs. Baker has that opportunity, she has that chance. She could beat this and give her daughter many more years with her mother. Why wouldn’t she want to take that?”
As he spoke, his voice cracked. This prompted Natalie to give in, resting a gentle hand on his forearm in a comforting manner.
“Will, this isn’t on you. Mrs. Baker has been through hell and back trying to fight her cancer, and it’s okay that she doesn’t want to fight anymore. It’s okay.”
At this point, he broke. The dam of tears that had been building up finally let loose, streaming down his face. Natalie moved closer to him, putting an arm around his shoulder. He tilted his head, leaning against her as he cried.
“I-it was just me, I was all she had. J-Jay couldn’t come home and Dad d-didn’t care. I failed her,” he sobbed.
Natalie brought her hand up to his face, brushing the stray tears away, shushing him.
“Shh, it’s alright. You didn’t fail her, you did everything you could,” she murmured.
He didn’t have it in him to speak anymore as the two sat there in silence, with Will occasionally sniffling and Natalie humming a calming tune. She sat next to him, holding him until he fell asleep. She nudged his shoulder and whispered soft instructions to him, convincing him to bring himself up to the couch. He adjusted his position, laying on his side on the soft surface below him.
Natalie sat on the cushions, positioning herself in front of his legs so that she wasn’t entirely encroaching on his personal space, but close enough for him to know that she was there. After a moment of watching him to make sure he was asleep, the room was filled with the sound of light snoring. She took that as her sign to get up, leaving him on the couch.
“Nat…,” he mumbled, eyes still closed.
She turned around, seeing him still laying on the couch with an outstretched arm. She stood there, stunned.
“C’mere,” he tried again, beckoning her to him.
She sat back down on the couch, assuming her previous position. He groaned and reached his arm out again, wrapping it around her waist to pull her down next to him. This shocked her, but she quickly recovered as Will buried his face into her hair, quickly falling back asleep. His breathing patterns were calm, and Natalie found herself listening to them like a lullaby as she drifted off to sleep next to him.

Idk why they have the docs on Med CONSTANTLY do things that would have them lose their licenses to practice if it was irl.
Example being Will, some of the stuff he’s done would have his medical license revoked in the real world
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(this post does not point out Will Halstead's good qualities, consider this a trigger warning for those who don't want to read an anti Will post)
Will is my best example of illegal shit with zero consequences! He violated TWO do not resuscitate orders! He violated the bodily autonomy of two different women because he didn't handle his mom's death well, and to make things worse when it comes up he's always complaining about it! He acts like he's the victim but he IS NOT and I will never not be mad about it!
I can't remember the exact wording, but when Hannah Baker was dying in the ER only her 15 year old daughter was with her and instead of getting her out of the room, sending someone to find her father, he asked her to give him permission to resuscitate her mom. He should NOT have asked a 15 year old that question, he should not have traumatized her more than she already was. He selfishly put his wants and feelings and issues before LITERALLY EVERYONE ELSE and expected to be treated like a hero for it.
No. Fucking hell no.
That's why I only begrudgingly ship manstead, it's the ship that made her the happiest, but Will was toxic and didn't deserve her.
He didn't deserve most of the women he dated tbh. Every single relationship he was in was an nothing short of an absolute trainwreck and he is the only common denominator. Makes you think, doesn't it?

When we fall | Part 1
Warnings (for all parts): Fluff, angst!!, description of injuries, blood, violence, use of guns, mentions of death, probably unaccurate policing/medicine
Summary: You moved to Chicago to start a new life. Working as a doctor alongside your brother Connor you make new friends and although you swore to yourself not to let any man in your life at least for a while, your promises fail when you lock eyes with a handsome stranger in a bar.
Words: 6k
Pairing: Jay Halstead x Doctor!Rhodes!reader
A/N: I just started watching Chicago PD (I'm on season 3 now) after I've been watching Fire and Med for years now. I just can't stand Voight so I only began watching for Jay and Burzek! And I am so in love with Jay. Please, this man is perfect. Just look at that handsome face!!
This is going to be a 3 part series I wrote on a whim. Originally I only planned on writing one scene, but then I figured it needed a backstory so this happened...
I have to say I am really proud how it turned out. I was just in such a flow when I wrote it that the story basically wrote itsself. I hope you enjoy and that the characters feel true to themselves :)
Tumblr media
You had only began working at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center a few months ago, hesitant to work alongside your brother but knowing it was an opportunity, which would be stupid not to take.
Having moved to Chicago recently to be close with your brother after a messy break-up, you were still adjusting to your new life.
It was why you were more than relieved when you got along well with your co-workers, especially Natalie and her boyfriend Will.
They were understanding of your situation, were never bothered to show you where to find something at the hospital and made you feel welcome from the beginning as they invited you in on their group plans and joked like you were old friends.
Although you still felt a little uncertain at times to work with your brother, who had made himself a name as a brilliant trauma and cardiothoracic surgeon, he had been supportive since your decision to leave your old town behind and start a new life in Chicago.
Maybe, you thought, coming here had been exactly what you needed. A fresh start, a new beginning with new friends and no men to mess with your heart. At least for now.
“I told you I have sworn off men”, you sighed, shaking your head in amusement at Natalie’s try to play matchmaker. “They’re trouble. I don’t need that in my life right now.”
“Hey!” Will send you a look, though you knew he wasn’t mad. “She’s not wrong though”, April stated and Ethan next to her grinned. “I mean it though”, you said directed at Natalie. “I just want to focus on myself right now. My job. No dating for now.”
Everyone at the table nodded and you relaxed, glad you had found these people, who respected and supported you. “Cheers to that!” April raised her glass and you did the same when you noticed yours was empty.
With a groan you pushed yourself out of your seat and up, gesturing towards the bar. “I’m going to get another drink. Anyone want something?” They all shook their heads, already moving onto another topic.
As you made your way over to the counter you studied the people around you, trying to determine who was a cop, a firefighter and who a regular. Right in the beginning the others had introduced you to Mollys, claiming it was Chicago’s bar where first responders spend their time after shift.
Figuring it might come in handy to memorize some faces you let your gaze drift over the sea of people, recognizing a few men that Connor had once told you worked at the CFD. They were laughing loudly, beers in hand as they seemed to be talking enthusiastically about something.
At the table next to theirs your gaze came to a hold, your eyes caught by a man you had never seen before but looked slightly familiar. Your brows furrowed as you rummaged in your head for something that connected you to him, but you couldn’t find anything.
The people who sat with him didn’t look familiar either, consisting of men and one woman with chestnut hair. Your eyes drifted back to the man, who had caught your attention, his brown hair styled neatly and his hands wrapped around a bottle of beer that he just raised to his lips.
You didn’t meant to stare, but you were mesmerized, torn between trying to determine why he looked so familiar and captured by his effortless handsomeness.
He wore a green shirt, making you think his eyes were the same shade, although it was hard to know with the distance between you.
He seemed relaxed, leant back in his seat but listening to the others conversation attentively. Having sensed someone’s eyes on him he suddenly looked up, his eyes searching the room for a split second before they fell onto you.
Your face heat up as a blush crept up your cheeks, knowing you had missed your chance to turn away. The man raised his brows slightly, in confusion just as much as amusement it seemed, before he lightly lifted his bottle, as if he was saying cheers.
You clutched your glass a little tighter, glad that it had been refilled in the time you had spent gawking at him, and copied the movement, an unstable smile on your lips. Then you turned away, meeting Stella’s gaze from the other side of the bar.
The two of you had met when she had been at the hospital for smoke inhaling a while ago and you had clicked almost instantly, connected by your determination to hold your own in a field still dominated by men. And by your past with toxic relationships as you found out later.
“What was that?”, she asked, a teasing grin tugging at the corner of her lips as her eyes flickered between you and the man behind you. A part of you wanted to ask if he was still watching you, the other longed to forget it had ever happened.
“I don’t know.” You let out a dramatic sigh. “Can we just forget it ever happened?”
Stella’s face lit up, her curls dancing around her face as she shook her head. “Yeah, you wish. But that was definitely something.”
You exhaled, pinching your nose. “Thank you for the drink.” You saw Stella open her mouth in protest at your ignoration of her words, but before she could say anything else you send her an apologetical smile and hurried off.
No one seemed to have noticed your encounter and you slipped into the booth with ease, trying hard not to steal another glance at the unknown man a few tables away.
No men, you reminded yourself. Right now you needed to focus on getting your life together, not getting your heart broken by a handsome stranger.
-
“Dr. (Y/l/n)?” “Yeah?”, your head shot up from where you had filled out paper work. Because Connor and you were only half-sibling, you didn’t share the same last name, something you had been more than glad over when stepping foot in this hospital for the first time.
No one knew where you came from and that you shared genes with the successful Dr. Rhodes and you had left it at that at first, wanting to make your own impression first before dropping the information.
You could still remember their shocked faces, the questions, but most of all the excitement as they asked what Connor had been like growing up. If you had any embarrassing stories to tell or photos to show.
You didn’t, keeping them to yourself for now, because you hadn’t come here to make fun of your brother. He had been your rock through your breakup and your move here, something you were so grateful for you feared you would never be able to show him just how much.
“We have someone hit bit a bullet waiting in the three.” Your eyes widened. “Why didn’t they come with an ambulance?”, you asked, grabbing your iPad along the way.
Maggie waved off your comment, chuckling. “Cops. You know how they are.”
Actually, you didn’t. Coming from a small town you had no experience with shootings and gangs and many of the other trauma causes that were common here in Chicago. It was why you had been so excited about your job offer at the hospital.
Although you were still adjusting to the changes of living in a city and there were downsides you hadn’t considered before, you liked it. It felt so different, giving you the sense that in this city everything could be possible.
So many options and so many possibilities, as if you could completely reinvent yourself. It was thrilling, making you wonder how you had ever lived without the adrenaline rush of stepping into a busy ER.
Quickly scanning the information on your tablet you pulled open the curtain, clamping the iPad under your arm as you disinfected your hands.
“Hi, I’m doctor (y/l/n) and you are?” You glanced up, startled as you met the eyes of a familiar stranger. The man in front of you grinned, seemingly better at covering up his surprise. “Shouldn’t it say my name on your tablet?”
He didn’t sound rude, only a little sarcastic and perhaps even teasing. You gulped, trying to recompose yourself. “Right. I just prefer getting to know my patients myself than just relying on numbers and letters.”
You didn’t see his reaction when you grabbed your iPad again, glancing down at it. “So your name is Jay Hal-” “Halstead”, he finished for you and you looked up at him again.
It made sense now, why he had seemed so familiar to you nights ago at Mollys. “You’re Will’s brother.” The man in front of you, Jay, as you knew now, raised a brow. “Have you considered becoming a detective?”
He was mocking you, again, and you were tempted to smack him with your iPad. “So-”, he paused, letting his eyes drift over you. You felt your body tense under his gaze, cop’s eyes, and stood a little straighter.
“You were watching me at Mollys.”
You pressed your lips into a thin line, biting your tongue. You could only hope the embarrassment that began to sink in didn’t show.
“I was not watching you”, you stated and he raised a brow, daring you to explain yourself. “I just thought you looked familiar, but I couldn’t figure out why. Now it makes sense.”
You turned halfway towards the door, gesturing to the halls where somewhere his brother was treating another patient.
“I don’t think that’s the whole truth.”
You almost gasped at the confidence in his voice, instead blowing out a breath. “It definitely was.”
He shook his head, smiling. “I don’t buy it.”
There were many things you wanted to say to him, but you swallowed them, knowing it was no use. He clearly enjoyed teasing you, so you wouldn’t give him more fuel.
Instead you let out a sigh, shifting into professionality. “So, Mr. Halstead”, you began. “Jay is fine.” You tried not to let his interruption let you lose your string again and nodded. “Jay, you’re here for a bullet wound on your left upper arm?”
Jay nodded, his eyes- they really were green- bright. Pulling on your gloves you decided it was time to reclaim your own position a little. “And you decided to just walk in here instead of coming with an ambulance? Seems a little reckless, don’t you think?”
He raised one brow at your question. “It’s just a graze. I wouldn’t even be here if it weren’t for my boss.” He rolled his eyes, making you wonder what his boss was like.
“Seems like your boss is a lot smarter than you”, you muttered, but to your surprise Jay grinned. “You’re new here, right? At least I’ve never seen you here before. Do you always talk to patients like that?”
You shrugged, unbothered by his words as you stepped close to him to take a look at his arm. You didn’t know what had gotten into you to talk to him like that, but you had the feeling with him it was fine. That he could take it, perhaps even enjoyed it over your dry professionalism.
“Only to the ones I like best”, you said with sarcasm in your voice, too focused on inspecting his wound to check his expression.
Jay didn’t move under your touch, allowing you to move his arm before you let it go again. He had done this before, probably multiple times. It was why he was so unbothered, perhaps even annoyed to waste his time here on something that seemed unsignificant to him.
For a moment you were tempted to ask him how he could choose a job that demanded such sacrifice, but you didn’t know him and you doubted he would give you an honest answer. Not that you could blame him. You were practically strangers.
And was your job much different? Although you had never been hurt and doubted it would ever happen, you were still making countless of sacrifices for it. Taking on extra shifts, working through the nights, staying longer to take more time for your patients and putting their health over your own sometimes.
“It’s just a graze shot”, you said when you were done inspecting the wound, ignoring his look that seemed to say “told you”.
“But you still need to be careful with it. Give it rest, avoid any rapid movements, don’t lift too heavy with it…I think you know.”
Jay nodded, watching you remove your gloves. “Does that happen often?” He tilted his head in question and you bit your lip. “I mean, you- getting shot on the job.”
“Are you asking if I come here often?” His lips were curled into a lopsided grin, looking way too handsome on his features. You rolled your eyes at his teasing, ignoring the way your heart beat a little faster in your chest. “Forget it”, you stated, throwing your gloves into the bin.
“I am going to tell one of the residents to come and bandage the wound. Then you’re free to go.”
But before you could move the curtain again and leave the room you heard Jay’s voice behind you. “Wait.”
You paused, turning back to him slowly. For the first time he wore a serious expression, his jaw twitching.
“I’m with the Intelligence”, he stated, in a way that told you the name should ring a bell. It didn’t. You were too new to know much about it.
Jay seemed to sense it by your lack of a reaction to his words. “We’re…very involved in the City.”
Whatever that meant. You tilted your head in question. “You mean with the gangs?”
Jay shifted. “Voight, my boss, he can be very- intense.”
You nodded slowly, taking in his guarded expression. It was a topic you wouldn’t pry at. “And you’re okay with it? I mean- you’re just so…casual about this.”
You bit your lip, hesitant to ask him but curious as well. The cops in your home town had barely ever used their weapon to the point you sometimes even doubted they were able to.
Jay shrugged nonchalantly. “Before I worked for the CPD I was in the army. I’ve been through a lot worse than a graze. Getting shot at is just another part of my job.”
A veteran.
In such a short amount of time Jay had revealed so much to you. Suddenly you had a lot more respect for the man in front of you and you wondered if that was his way of coping, covering up his battle wounds and scars with sarcasm and wit.
You swallowed, trying to find words. But none seemed fitting. “Sounds like I will be seeing you here often then.” You kept your voice emotionless, although the thought of seeing Jay regularly made your heart speed up a little. Of course you would prefer different circumstances.
Damn his handsome face and wit.
He grinned slightly, shifting the atmosphere back to something lighter. “Don’t get too excited. I prefer staying bullet free.” “As you should.”
Typing something into your iPad you gave Jay a final nod. “Stay safe out there.” Then you turned to the door, already halfway out when you heard his voice again.
“I don’t even know your name.”
You froze, smiling to yourself when you tried not to put too much weight into the fact that he had called you back a second time. It seemed almost as if he didn’t want you to leave just yet.
But you pushed the thought aside, knowing it was pointless. You couldn’t let yourself get distracted so easily.
Turning back to him you put on a polite smile.
“You’re a detective, figure it out.”
You were surprised by your own confidence, but with Jay you didn’t feel shy or insecure. He made you feel like you could say anything and he wouldn’t mind. The type of man that didn’t get upset easily, so comfortable with who he was that it took a lot to get him to lose his temper.
“I could just ask my brother, you know.”
You shrugged, unimpressed. “If that lets you sleep at night, sure.”
You left the room smiling to yourself and it took you another few minutes to calm your rapid heart and collect yourself.
-
“You didn’t tell me you have a brother!” “What?” Will looked up from the computer, startled by the way you had barged into the break room.
Your shift was over and you couldn’t wait to get home and relax on the couch, but before that you needed to talk to Will. Because after encountering the other Halstead your mind hadn’t been able to let go of what had happened between the two of you. The way he had looked at you, teased you. How he had made you feel nervous and confident in just a matter of moments.
“Why didn’t you tell me you have a brother?” You leaned on the desk, sure that you had Will’s full attention now. “You didn’t tell us you had a brother the first few weeks either.”
“That’s different.” You shook your head. “And I did tell you. So…?”
Will leaned back in his chair, stretching his back. “I didn’t think it mattered. I would have introduced you eventually but- wait, is Jay here?”
You bit your tongue, feeling a little caught. You hadn’t thought that maybe Jay didn’t want his brother to know what had happened. But it was too late now, and anyway, how should you have known?“
"He was. He is fine though.” You kept your words vague, aware that you weren’t allowed to share personal information with Will. Even if they were brothers.
Will let out a sigh. “That idiot. Probably got himself in trouble again.” He reached for his phone across the desk and you quickly got up, straightening.
“You didn’t get it from me”, you threw in before Will could drag you into it and he looked up at you with curiosity in his eyes. “I wasn’t going to mention you.”
“Oh.” You nodded, feeling relieved yet a little flustered. Will studied you with attentive eyes, reminding you of his brother for a second before his expression shifted into suspicion.
“So you met Jay.” He said it in a way that proposed something meaningful behind his words, but you couldn’t figure out why. “I did.” You shifted your weight to the balls of your feet before swaying forward again. A nervous habit. “I bet he’s the younger one.”
“He is, yeah.”
You suppressed a grin. It made so much sense. “So I should probably head home now. I got the early shift tomorrow.”
“Right.” Will nodded, the phone in his hands seemingly forgotten as his eyes were still fixed on you. “Did something happen between you and my brother?”
Your heart sank a little. Were you really so obvious? “I told you I’ve sworn off men. And your brother is- annoying.”
You wished the last part didn’t sound like it came straight from a five year old’s mouth, but it was too late to take back.
“Trust me, I know that.” Will let out a sigh, but you could see the fondness in his eyes. The gesture alone told you they had a close relationship.
A cop and a doctor. What a pair.
“Well, I’ll see you tomorrow. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”
-
Weeks had passed since you had last seen Jay. He hadn’t shown up in the hospital again, which you were both glad for and disappointed at, and since you had been taking on extra shifts for a sick co-worker, you had spent almost all your time at the hospital or passed out in your bed.
“You haven’t gone out with us in weeks!” Sylvie was currently trying to convince you to come to Mollys. You had gotten to know her through Stella and the two of you had gotten along well, her sweet and kind nature something that made you feel comfortable around her instantly.
Although you had quickly learned not to underestimate the girl. She was working with a bunch of guys after all and had learned to stand her ground with them.
Sylvie could be very persistent, you realized again when she had called you to invite you to a girl’s night out. “Stella won’t be working today, so it’s our chance to spend the night as just us girls.”
You gnawed your lip, thinking. You were tired, craving your couch and tv more than going out again, but Sylvie wasn’t wrong, you had been mostly on your own the past days. Being a little social and getting out of your own apartment would probably be good.
“Urgh, fine”, you groaned. “But you’re paying my first drink.” You knew Sylvie was smiling triumphantly on the other end of the line. “Deal.” “Now get your ass over here!” It was Stella’s voice in the background and you chuckled. “You are the worst!”
“And you love us anyway”, she chirped and you hung up, shaking your head with a smile on your face.
You hadn’t thought about impressing anyone when getting ready, but you were more than glad you had put a little effort into your outfit and make-up when you stepped into Molly’s that night, your getup like a wall build around you.
“You came!” Stella crossed the room, her voice loud enough for a couple of heads to turn towards you. You could kill her for drawing attention to you, but you forced a smile onto your lips instead, trying not to look at anyone except her.
“Hey”, you muttered, shrugging out of your coat and hugging her. “Wow, girl you look stunning!” Stella’s eyes flashed up and down your body as she let go, a smirk on her face.
“A little quieter, please?”, you almost whispered, aware that you still had the attention of the people around you. Stella seemed either completely oblivious to it all or unbothered, because she grinned at you. “Looking like that you will draw attention to you whether you like it or not!”
You felt your cheeks heat up a little, glad when you spied Sylvie making her way over. “I told her not to make a scene, but she wouldn’t listen. You know how she is!”
You hugged her too, smiling as Stella let out a breath. “I did not make a scene. And I’m standing right here, you know?”
Laughing, the three of you made your way to the back, where you slipped into a booth, your drink already waiting for you. “You know me so well”, you told Stella as you took your first sip, relaxing a little now that the attention had mostly vanished.
“I got you, girl!” Stella winked at you, before launching into a story about their newest rescue. Soon you were enveloped in laughter and smiles, the stress of the last days forgotten for the night.
Only when Stella declared it was time for another round of drinks you felt the exhaustion return to your body. “I think I’m going to head home”, you told them, stretching a little in your seat. “Early shift tomorrow?”, Sylvie asked and you nodded.
“You’re way too selfless, taking on all these extra shifts”, Stella pointed out, but you waved her off. “I’m the new one, so it’s fine. Helps me get to know everyone and everything better and it’s not like I have much to do in this city yet. I only got my gym membership, but I didn’t really have time to look for anything else.”
“See? That’s exactly why you need time off! You should be out exploring the city!” You smiled at Stella’s enthusiasm. “It’s not like it won’t be here tomorrow. I’m planning on staying here, so there’s plenty of time to get to know it all.”
Sylvie offered you a smile. “I’m glad you do. I know it can be quite an adjustment to move to a big city like Chicago, but it will feel like your home in no time.”
You felt your heart squeeze painfully in your chest as you thought back to the past months, which had been filled with nothing but heartbreak, loss and a turmoil of emotions. Even as you had decided to start a new life in Chicago, you had been filled with fear and uncertainty, scared to make the wrong call yet again.
Never could you have imagined to find a job, that was so challenging, but gave you a sense of purpose and a group of friends, that felt like you had met them long ago.
“It already kind of does”, you admitted, your eyes fixed on the empty glass in front of you before you looked up at them again. They both looked at you with big smiles on their faces and you almost felt tears fill your eyes. It had been a long day.
“We should do this more often”, you told them as you got up and grabbed your coat. “That’s what I said!” Stella nodded.
“And I still need to show you that spinning class. You would love it!” Sylvie sounded so excited that you couldn’t help but chuckle. “I am sure. Just text me and we’ll find something.”
“And you’re sure you can’t stay longer?”
Your eyes drifted to the counter as you considered staying for another drink, but your body felt heavy and almost sore from the day’s work. “Next time. But you two have fun and don’t drink too much”, you winked at them.
As you excited the bar you waved towards a few familiar faces before pulling your coat closer around your body to prepare yourself for Chicago’s cold.
Still you shivered as you stepped outside, pulling out your phone to order an Uber. Something you had only done once before, on your way here, but was an easy and quick way of getting around the city.
It would take a few minutes for your driver to arrive and you realized it would have been a lot smarter to wait inside, but you hadn’t thought of it then and you felt too proud to step inside again.
Pressing your hands together you rubbed them against each other a few times to create heat, before slinging your arms around your torso. Chicago’s harsh winters wasn’t something you hadn’t gotten used to yet, but the promise of snow lingering in the air made it almost worth it.
You heard the faint sound of the door opening and closing behind you so you took a step to the side of the building, not wanting to stand in the way of whoever had just left the bar.
To your surprise the person came to stand beside you, his presence alarming you until you glanced up to find none other than Jay Halstead standing next to you.
Immediately your body relaxed again, as if it knew by instinct his presence meant safety. “That was quite an entrance”, he greeted you, referring to the moment you had stepped into Molly’s.
You felt your cheeks flush at the memory, hoping he couldn’t see it in the dim light of the streetlamp. “I didn’t know you were here.” You kept your eyes trained at the empty street in front of you, willing and dreading the moment your driver came to pick you up.
“I was with the unit”, he said and you turned your head towards him. “Are you here often?” He shrugged, his eyes darting to the building. “I guess so, yeah. It’s the place where everyone comes.”
You nodded silently, contemplating his words. “But if I want to be alone, I go to the bar at the corner North Milwaukee Avenue.” You met his eyes curiously. Was he making recommendations, because you were new in the city or did he have another intention?
“So bars and hospitals. Everywhere else I can expect to run into Jay Halstead?” You didn’t know why you asked, but a part of you wanted to know. Wanted to know more about him, what his life was like, what made him who he was.
Jay grinned faintly. “You make it sound like I’ve got issues.” “Do you? Have issues?” You were teasing and he smirked. “Doesn’t everyone?”
“I don’t think I have.” Even as you said it you knew your words couldn’t be farer from the truth. Hadn’t your issues been what had led you here?
Jay watched you for a moment, seemingly picking up on your change of mood, but sensing you weren’t ready to talk about it. You appreciated it, welcoming the silence to sort your thoughts again.
“So what led you here to Chicago?” His question was innocent and something you had been asked countless of times since your move here, but for some reason you felt the urge to be open with him. No lies or excuses.
And even if Jay barely knew you, you thought he would be able to pick up on it. He must be an excellent detective.
“There were some…things I needed to leave behind.” It was vague, but more than you had told most who had asked. Only the girls knew about your breakup, but even with them you hadn’t shared many details.
Jay didn’t ask further, his grave expression suggesting he understood you better than you might have thought. “Why Chicago?” You glanced away from him, taking in the empty road, the skyline with its lights in the background. “I needed a fresh start, somewhere where no one knew who I am. And I got family here, so it made sense.”
You could feel his eyes on you and you swallowed before facing him again. For a moment your eyes locked, none of you saying anything as you started at each other. Jay was the first one to break the heavy atmosphere, a smile dancing at his lips.
“But you’re not a criminal on the run, are you? Because I would have to arrest you, if you were.” The tension that had risen in your body at the mention of your past vanished and you grinned, relieved about his ability to lighten the atmosphere. “What gave it away?”
Jay leaned a little closer, his eyes glistening. “Maybe the way you always look over your shoulder-” You inhaled. Was that really something you did? “-or that you’re nervous around me, a cop.”
The air you had held escaped you in a surprised sound and you hugged your torso a little tighter. “I’m not nervous around you”, you huffed, shaking your head. Jay grinned.
“How is your arm by the way?” You weren’t interested in talking about yourself any longer, shifting the topic onto him. Your gazes travelled down his arm where his jacket was covering the wound you had inspected. It seemed like forever ago and like yesterday at once.
“It’s good. Voight’s keeping me at a leash, make sure I’m 100% before I get into the field again.” He said it like it wasn’t a big deal, but you could hear the strain in his voice. He missed it, being out there on the streets.
“Sounds reasonable to me.” “Yeah.” Jay nodded, a faraway look in his eyes. It seemed like you weren’t the only one with secrets.
You looked up at the sound of a car nearing, a black car approaching the two of you. Checking your phone you held it up. “That’s my ride.”
But you only managed one step towards it before Jay pulled you back, his hand wrapped around your lower arm. You gazed at it, confused and startled by his reaction and he loosened his grip, his hand falling to his side after a moment.
“You know the guy?”, he asked, pointing to the man that was sitting behind the wheel, an impatient expression on his face.
Slowly you shook your head, your eyes flickering between the car and Jay. “But he’s my ride. See-” you held up your phone to him, but Jay paid it little attention.
“Yeah, no, you’re not climbing into that car”, he stated, his voice firm but not unfriendly. “Wait, what?”
Surprised you watched Jay walk towards the car, waiting for the driver to pull down the window before leaning in. You couldn’t hear what was said, only watched the two speak for a minute.
Their conversation ended with Jay handing the man money, before walking back towards you as the car sped away in the darkness.
“What the hell was that?”, you asked as Jay came to stand beside you again, his body just as relaxed as before. “You’re new in Chicago, right?” You didn’t say anything, knowing it was a question he didn’t expect an answer to.
“You should not be climbing into a car with a stranger. And not in the dark.”
Your head spun as you tried to process what he was implying. “It was just an uber! Everyone does that around here.”
You sounded clueless and defensive, shocked about the sudden change of events. Jay eyed you. “Well, then take it from me to never do that again. At least not alone. Chicago’s not a good place, especially for women, trust me on that one.”
You didn’t know what to say, blinking at him as the impact of it sank in. What if Jay hadn’t stepped outside? You doubted anything would have happened, but what if he was right and you had been reckless? Naive?
“So how am I supposed to get around the city then? Because driving in this traffic is madness.”
For the first time since your interruption Jay smiled again. “You can just ask me. I am much cheaper anyway. And on top you will get to see my face.”
You rolled your eyes over his confidence. “Now that’s a deal I can’t decline”, you muttered, fighting the grin that threatened to spread over your face and failing. Damn it.
“But for real, what am I supposed to do? I can’t just call you all the time I want to go somewhere.”
“It wouldn’t be a problem if we went together.”
Your eyes widened as you almost choked on the air. “You mean a date?”
Jay shrugged, his eyes not meeting yours for only a second. “You can pay me back for saving your ass twice.”
“Twice?”
“Getting into that car for one and saving you from freezing here on the street by driving you home.”
Smooth. You couldn’t help the laugh that escaped you. “Does that work with every woman you’re trying to impress?”
Jay shrugged, fiddling for something in his pocket before pulling out his car keys. You watched a car light up at the other side of the street, following Jay towards it.
“I wouldn’t know. And who says I’m trying to impress you?”
“Maybe because of this whole I’m-a-cop-and-I’m-so-tough-thing.”
Now it was Jay’s turn to chuckle. “That’s not just a thing. So, what are you saying?”
Oh. You bit your lip, considering the thought of going on a date with Jay. Hadn’t you just recently decided not to date and focus on yourself for a while?
But you couldn’t deny you wanted to say yes. To spend more time around him and enjoy the feeling of ease he gave you.
“Maybe.”
You said it with a teasing smile, scared Jay might take your answer in a bad way, but he sent you a confident grin. “I can work with that.”

public displays of affection [ chicago med ]
CHARACTERS INCLUDE ─ will halstead, connor rhodes, sarah reese, april sexton, ava bekker, ethan choi, natalie manning
Tumblr media
⋯ WILL HALSTEAD
a golden retriever when it comes to any sort of affection. sure, he understands there is a time and place for it, but some times he can’t really help himself -- you’re his partner, why wouldn’t he show you all the affection? will has no issue with kissing you on the lips, pulling you in for a tight hug, or lacing your fingers with his own. regardless of the crowd surrounding the two of you. some make fake gagging noises, but they understand the need for some physical affection from time to time
⋯ CONNOR RHODES
somewhat like will, but is a bit more reserved. relies heavily on “there’s a time and a place” and will always try to keep up a professional experience in public settings. he will, however, give you a tight hug or a soft kiss to the forehead whenever you need it -- i.e. you’re having a bad day. but, once the doors are closed, he’s very affectionate and will show you every ounce of love the second you’re alone together
⋯ SARAH REESE
very shy to show any sort of physical affection in the beginning of the relationship. she’s still trying to get past the idea that you’re even with her to begin with --  which is something that still amazes her from time to time. once she is able to gain a little confidence, she has no problem reaching down to lace her fingers with your own, before giving your hand a tight squeeze. it’s simple, but it’s very grounding for the two of you and a quick reminder you have each other’s back. any other sort of affection is saved for more private moments when other’s aren’t around
⋯ APRIL SEXTON
loves holding your hand -- she’s a nurse, and a lot of her care comes in the form of contact. she’ll hold your hand if neither of you are busy, give you a few grounding squeezes, or press a kiss to the back of your hand. uses it in the sense to comfort you, while also telling you she’s here for you
⋯ AVA BEKKER
finds public displays of affection to be more on the unprofessional side -- she’s trying to work, and as much as she would like to, kisses cannot be given at this time. however, if she’s on lunch or has a break in-between patiences, she will 100% provide you with the affection you are looking for // lacking throughout the day. it’s also taxing on her as well, but she’s got a better control on her affection when compared to her coworkers
⋯ ETHAN CHOI
much like ava, isn’t too fond of showing public affection but there are instances where he would. the end of shift is usually when he shows the most affection -- seeing he’s super tired and just ready to go home with you for the night. he’ll hold your hand, kiss your neck and cheek. really just turning into a pile of mush once he gets his affection
⋯ NATALIE MANNING
becomes so busy during the day, giving affection is probably one of the last things on her mind, but she always tries to make room for you and the affection she does give. arm around your shoulder // waist, nuzzling into your neck, pressing kisses to your cheek or the tips of your fingers -- she’ll do it all. does stand on the side of hestiancey when it comes to doing so around others, but she loves you so it equals out

Promises… Promises
Tumblr media
Warnings: hurt, angst, tw?
Requested: yes, anonymous
Natalie x reader
Summary: Y/N and Natalie are a couple and one day Y/N is hurt being a CPD officer, and brought to Chicago Med.
“I don’t want to be awake”
you moaned while moving out of Natalie’s warm embrace.
“Work demands you be there by how much they’re calling you” Natalie replied
“Sorry” you replied while changing into your work clothes. “It’s okay baby, I was joking around.”
“You got Owen?” “Yep I do”
“Alright, I got to go” you said while grabbing your badge and gun from your safe. “Love you.” You said as you kissed Natalie’s forehead.
“Love you too y/n. Be safe please”
“I will, I promise” you replied
**Natalie POV**
“Morning Will” I pronounced as a I walked into the doctors lounge.
“Morning Natalie. How is Y/N and Owen?”
“They’re good. Y/N had work early this morning, so I had to call in the babysitter earlier than expected” I let out a sigh
“Y/N has been working quite a lot huh” will said out loud.
“Yes, but it’s her job” I reply as I smile at him and walk out to get to my first patient.
“Mags, who’s the first”
“You have a 82 year old male. Mr. Simon his care facility brought him in for suspected syphilis”
I sigh “third one’s a charm right?” I say as I grab the tablet from Maggie and go to meet Mr. Simon.
“Treatment four Nat have fun” Maggie winked
**Time Skip**
“All right Mr. Simon, you do have syphilis I will be prescribing you some antibiotics for your nurse to give you to help with this ok. Any questions for me before I discharge you?”
“No doctor, I appreciate you taking care of my old self.”
I smile and nod “have a good day Mr. Simon. Oh- and one more thing use protection and check for any STD’s next time ok?”
“I will” Mr. Simon says as he snickers.
As I walk out of treatment four there is a big trauma incoming.
**Incoming**
“What do he have?” Maggie’s said as she stood to the paramedics
“Y/N Y/L/N CPD officer shot while raiding a home. 3 gsw’s one to the thigh almost hit the femoral artery; have a tourniquet on it. One to the chest, and one to the abdomen. 90/60 BP, gcs is 3, intubated on scene. Heart rate is 50 and sats are 87%”
“Will you’re up you’re going to Baghdad” Maggie yelled
“Follow me please” Will ran with the paramedics”
“MAGGIE!!” I just heard
“Natalie, breathe she’s in good hands with Rhodes” “go sit down”
**Conner POV**
“Natalie” I say as I walk into the waiting room
“Conner how is she?”
“Nat let’s sit, it’s a lot okay”
“Oh gosh”
“Breathe, she’s okay. She had a lot of internal damage. One Bullet hit her aorta, another tore part of her femoral artery, and the third ruptured her spleen.” “I went in, and repaired everything. The final thing is I’ve put her in an induced coma to give her heart and lungs the time to rest. She’ll be on a vent, and we’ll evaluate in about a week.”
“Okay? You feeling up to seeing her?” I said in response to Natalie crying.
“I promise you I will do everything in my power to give her the best care, and I’ll be personally coming in every 20 minutes”
“Okay” Natalie said through her sniffles
“Okay let’s go see her”
**Natalie POV**
“She’s so tiny and vulnerable” I look at y/n
“With the vent and the central line it looks so bad” I say rubbing Y/N’s hand slowly
“Nat it’s okay her body needs this rest okay”
“Okay….. can I stay with her?”
“Yes Natalie, I’m going to get Maggie to get you some food and blankets and your backup clothes to use okay”
“Thank you Conner”
Conner smiles and walks out
“I love you baby so much. Y/n you have to fight for me okay?”
“I know you can hear me baby. Please fight Y/N I can’t be alone. I love you so much”
Note: there may be a part 2 to this. Maybe… just maybe I’ll hit you with a little more fluff and angst. Love ya!

whumptober 2023 day 3 : vows
Chicago med, Sarah/Ava other characters: Kevin (cpd), other doctors from med
warnings : forced marriage, kidnapping, chains/restraints, unwilling drugging, mentioned torture
Tumblr media
Sarah takes in a breath as she smoothes over her white dress, the material is thin and soft under her hands, it feels all too revealing. There’s a crowd of people awaiting her to walk down the aisle, a man she doesn’t know at her side, a sympathetic smile on his face as though he’s apologizing for what’s about to happen.
“You look stunning.” A grin gets sent Sarah’s way once she approaches her awaiting partner, anxiety sitting painfully in her stomach as she takes Ava in. Her dress is much more modest than Sarah’s is, gold jewelry laid over her neck to match the clip she has holding her short hair back, her makeup is light and shines under the overhead lights. She looks like any normal bride, happy and excited about her marriage, not like she drugged Sarah to get her here and like the chains still clanking at her ankles weren’t put there by Ava herself.
“Do you two have vows prepared?” Connor meets Sarah’s eyes with his own fearful look, she can’t see but she assumes he has chains around his ankles the same way Sarah does. The same way they all do: April, Natalie, Noah, Ethan, Will, even Maggie. They still look more drugged than Sarah herself is, she’s been here the longest, at the apartment complex that Ava bought but uses as her personal prison for her past coworkers.
“Sarah, the light of my life, you were perfect the minute I laid my eyes on you. You were everything I ever wanted, I knew I had to have you.” Her hands get taken into Ava’s, it makes her body shiver but she musters the best smile she can. Fighting only leads to punishment and Sarah can’t sit through another day of being strapped to the medical table in that cold room she could throw up thinking about.
“What the hells going on?!” Will yells and cuts through the quietness of the room, it startles the others more awake, the redhead pulling at the ties that hold his hands behind the chair he’s sat in.
Sarah hates to see him struggle, she wants to tell him it’s okay, that if he goes along they’ll make it out okay, but the man who walked Sarah down the aisle is moving towards Will before she can. His hands are on Halstead’s shoulders, holding him down with a grunt about staying quiet during the ceremony. Reese isn’t sure how Ava knows him, how he became apart of this, but she doesn’t think it’s by his own free will.
“No more interruptions! Today is a special day, a day for me and Sarah.” Ava shouts the first words but drops her tone to something softer. It’d almost sound sweet if Sarah didn’t know how her mood changes within seconds and how she might be plunging a knife into Reese’s skin if she’s not careful.
“Ava, what are you doing? Can’t we talk about this?” Natalie pips up with her voice shaking but that signature Natalie type of care showing through, she’s always been so hopeful.
“There’s nothing to talk about, me and Sarah love each other, we’re getting married.” One of Ava’s hands moves to brush against Sarah’s skin, Reese almost starts to cry. She feels so empty staring back into someone she once considered a close friend who know seems like a complete stranger.
“Sweetheart…” The dark haired girl trails off, looking helplessly at Sarah before turning her head towards where Will is still being whisper-yelled at by the man Sarah’s yet to hear name for.
“Will it’s okay, it’s alright.” Reese calls out as assuringly as she can, watching him continue to struggle is making her chest ache, and she knows Ava won’t tolerate it much longer.
“Kevin’s a cop, he’s going to have his unit looking for him. The people at the hospital are going to look for us.” Halstead ignores Sarah’s pleads to instead start shouting at Ava, an almost frantic tone in his voice.
“Nobody will be looking for Kevin since he quit his job, and so did you all, such a shame Goodwin wouldn’t pay you better wages. Nobody will notice you’re gone.” Even if Sarah has heard it all before, it still makes her stomach churn.
“And don’t worry Natalie, sweet little Owen is staying with his grandmother while you take some time to clear your head.” That eases Sarah as much as it does Manning, she hadn’t heard Ava mention Owen till now but it had been a constant question in the back of her mind.
“Now let’s get back to the wedding. It’s your turn to say your vows baby.” Ava’s lips curl into a smile, hands gripping Sarah’s, it takes all of Reese’s willpower to not start to sob the tears she’s been holding back since she got taken, instead she steels herself with a breath and thinks up the most romantic vows she can. The more she goes along the better it’ll be, the more of a chance they’ll have to get out of here.

Can we get a second part on History - Matt Casey?
Y/N is close to her due date, she and Casey are expecting a baby girl. But Y/N broke up with Casey again.
The baby is born, Y/N and Casey are still not together and don’t want to. How will they copy with a baby girl there as co-parenting?
History (part 2) - Matt Casey
Featuring: Kelly Severide, Jay Halstead, Hailey Upton, Natalie Manning, and Maggie Lockwood
Summary: As your due date approaches, you realize that you and Matt jus won’t work as a couple, but you are willing to coparent. Weeks later, your baby Clarissa Hope Casey is brought into the world.
Warnings: cursing and talk about labor (nothing gruesome), mentions of anxiety (anxiety attack symptoms)
Authors note: Took the liberty to add a few of my faves into the mix. Hope you enjoy!
Now at 8 months pregnant, you are feeling the stress. Between getting the nursery ready for your baby girl and your relationship with Matt, everything seems to be falling apart. Matt comes by late again, swearing that this is the last time even though you’ve heard it all before.
“Damn it Matt. This isn’t the first time you’ve made promises you can’t or won’t keep.” I sighed, sitting on the couch and rubbing my belly to help calm my racing heart. “You come home late, if at all. Your room at your apartment is a mess when I’m over. I’ve basically put most this nursery together by myself, but not to even mention the fact that you haven’t started one at your apartment. I don’t know how much longer I can do this.” I whisper the last part as tears fall down my face.
Matt sighs and sits down next to me, but he doesn’t try to take my hand again once I pull away from him. “Y/n please.” Matt begs. “You know I’ve been busy at work. I know it isn’t the answer you want or the situation that you want, but we can still make this work. I promise.” Matt says, trying to reach for you again.
I shake my head and stand. “No. No more promises. I don’t think I can deal with you breaking another one.” I say, walking toward my kitchen. “You are keeping secrets from me. I can feel it, so don’t try to tell me otherwise Case.” I almost yell, putting my hand up to stop him from interrupting me. “I’m done. I can’t keep wondering if you’ll come home or if your okay or if your cheating on me. I have other priorities. Please. Just leave.” I sigh, shaking my head and wiping my face as I turn my back to him.
Matt sighs as well, coming up to me slowly. “Baby. Please don’t do this.” He whispers in a broken voice. “I just can’t tell you everything right now. It’s not safe.” He tries to explain.
I shake my head, whirling around on him. “No. We can coparent and I’ll be civil with you, but I can’t take this anymore. Please. Just go.” I beg, locking eyes with the man I love. I know this is for the best though. The stress is just too much.
Matt freezes as he looks into your eyes. He knows this is it, but he wants to fight you for it. “Y/n…”
“I said GO Matt.” I practically yell, standing my ground. I turn and try not to let out a sob as Matt sighs in defeat and leaves. This is for the best.
~Two weeks later~
Since breaking up with Matt, your friends have been by your side. Jay Halstead and some of the other guys from intelligence came around to finish up the furniture for the nursery while you and the girls got to work on the finally pieces of decoration. Currently, Kelly was over giving you the rundown on all the stuff that he had helped Matt prepare at their place. You had called your best friend, overly anxious at the thought of your daughter not having everything she may need at her father’s apartment, but Kelly had now slightly calmed your nerves.
“Do you think I did the right thing?” I asked Kelly quietly, not looking into his eyes.
Kelly sighed and stayed quiet for a moment before answering. “You know, I think you did.” Kelly started. “I know you guys love each other, but actually being together is too toxic. You’re better off as friends.” Kelly confirmed, taking your hand. “Either way, you did what you felt is right and I can respect that. You have such a huge support system and so does he. You guys won’t be alone.”
I looked up at Kelly, tears in my eyes and a few falling down my cheeks. “I’m scared. There are just so many unknowns.” I gasped, starting to panic as a million thoughts flooded my brain.
Kelly shook his head, pulling me into his side. “Hey hey hey. None of that, okay?” Kelly soothed, rubbing my arm and placing a hand on my belly. “You and this little princess will be just fine. I’ll be at the apartment with Matt and we can get someone or a few people to stay here with you. We will figure it out together, okay?” Kelly asked, turning to look at your eyes.
I nodded, focusing on my breathing. Once I was calm again, I pulled back and wiped my face. “Thanks Kel. For being here and for helping Matt. You have no idea how much of a help you’ve been.” I said, leaning over to grab my water and take a few sips. “So I’ve already asked Stella to be Clarissa’s Godmother. Would you be her Godfather?” I asked, looking at Kelly and leaning back into the couch cushions.
Kelly grinned, his eyes sparkling with excitement and tears of joy. “Hell yeah I would!” He exclaimed, pulling you into a hug before leaning down to your belly. “Hey princess girl. Uncle Kelly loves you sooo much. We can’t wait to meet you. You have such a big family and you and Mommy are just soooo loved.” Kelly cooed, rubbing your belly before sitting up and looking back at you.
I had tears in my eyes as I watched Kelly talk to my baby. Yeah. Everything would be just fine.
~ two days later~
I was going toward the laundry room to do some laundry when the first big contraction hit. I hissed and dropped the hamper, turning to grab the counter. Jay and Hailey, who had come to have lunch with me, came running into the kitchen as they took in the scene.
“Hey. What’s going on?” Jay asked, coming to my side to steady me with a hand on the small of my back and the other supporting my elbow.
I shook my head. “I don’t know. God it hurts.” I gritted out, trying to breathe through the pain as it started to disappeared. “It’s probably-“ I didn’t get to finish as my water broke, liquid running down the inside of my pants. “Oh fuck.” I gasped, looking down.
Jay and Hailey followed my gaze. They saw my leggings darken and knew exactly what happened. Hailey ran to get my stuff for the hospital and yelled that she would call Matt as Jay started rubbing my back.
“Alright. It’s time. You ready?” Jay asked, letting me grip his hand in mine as he turned me to face him.
My breathing picked up as I processed what was going on. “Oh God. Jay, what if I can’t do this?” I cried, letting Jay pull me into his chest.
“Hey now. Sh Sh Sh. Everything will be just fine. You are so strong. You got this.” Jay encouraged, kissing your forehead. “We are gonna get you to the hospital, we will stay with you until Matt and Kelly get there, but you will have the best meds there and ready for you. Alright? I’ll call Will and have him set everything up for you. We got this, but we have to go. Okay?” Jay soothed, leaning back and looking into my eyes.
I nodded, focusing on my breathing once again. “Okay. Okay. I got this. We got this peanut.” I whispered, rubbing my stomach. I’m going to meet my baby today.
“Alright. Let’s go. We will take my truck.” Jay said, turning to lead me to the door. Hailey was already waiting and slipped on my jacket for me and then my sandals before leaning the way to Jay’s truck. Since I wouldn’t let go of Jay, Hailey jumped in the front and flipped on the lights and sirens before practically flying to Med.
“Hey Voight. Y/n’s in labor. We are rushing her to med.” Hailey spoke into her cell phone, being cautious but needing to inform their boss of her whereabouts. After a few seconds, she replied with a “see yah there.” Before hanging up. “Voight will inform the team and will meet us there. Matt and the rest of 51 are wrapping a call and will be there as soon as possible. Okay Y/n?” Hailey said, making eye contact with me in the rear view.
I panted and looked to Jay who gave me a small smile to reassure me. “Okay.” I nodded.
Jay then took his phone out and called Will, explaining everything to his brother. “Yeah. ETA is maybe 5 minutes.” Jay said, shushing me as another contraction hit and I tried not to scream. “Yeah. She just had another one. They are roughly every 7 minutes as of current.” Jay informed Will, resetting the stop watch on his watch that I didn’t even notice he had going. “Just get Nat ready and get some meds. Maybe add something for anxiety if you can. She’s pretty anxious.” Jay relayed, pulling me closer into his side. “Thanks man.” He said before hanging up and putting his full attention back to me.
I tried not to sob as the contraction came to an end. “Thanks Jay.” I murmured, trying my best to relax against my friend.
Jay smiled and leaned down to kiss the top of my head. “Anything for you two. You know that.” Jay replied. “She’s gonna be the most protected baby in all of Chicago.” Jay teased, grinning as the statement brought a smile to your face as well.
“Hell yeah she is!” Hailey joined in, beaming at you and Jay in the mirror. “Future detective in there.” She joked, trying to lighten the mood.
I laughed and shook my head. “Nah. Between me and her daddy, she is bound to either be a paramedic or a firefighter. It’s in the blood.” I said, rubbing my belly and looking down fondly.
“We’re here!” Hailey said excitedly, causing me to look up. Hailey pulled into the ambo bay, putting the truck in park as Jay got out and then scooped me up, carrying me into the ED much to my displeasure.
“Halstead. I’m in labor. I’m capable of walking.” I said, laughing and shaking my head as I wrapped my arms around his neck.
Jay laughed, looking around for Will. “Yeah yeah. I know. Just figured this would be faster. You take too long to waddle.” Jay joked, earning a smack on the shoulder from you and on the back of the head from Hailey. “Hey! What was that for?” Jay playfully complained.
Hailey laughed and quietly muttered, “for being a dick.” So that only you guys could hear. You practically died of laughter at Jay’s fake shocked look.
Maggie came walking up then, looking at the three of you. “Sounds like a party over here.” She commented before looking me straight in the eyes. “You ready to have a baby?” She asked, pure excitement and joy on her face.
I sighed and looked to Jay, feeding off the excited smile he gave me in return. “Hell yeah I am.” I whispered, giggling as Jay winked at me.
Maggie laughed and turned around. “Right this way.” She beckoned. “And Upton, Halstead’s truck can’t be blocking my ambos. She’ll be in room 102 after you’ve moved the truck.” She said, leaving no room for argument as she kept walking.
I giggled and waved over Jay’s shoulder as Hailey jogged away. She didn’t want to be apart from you and Jay long if she could help it.
Jay gently sat you in your hospital bed, taking your shoes off and helping you with your jacket. “When Hailey gets back, she can help you into your gown, okay?” Jay said, smiling softly and giving your hand a squeeze.
I nodded and sat back. “Can you check on Matt and Kelly please?” I asked, fiddling with my cross necklace.
Jay nodded and pulled out his phone. “Sure thing. I’ll be right back, okay?” Jay promised, kissing the crown of your head before leaving the room.
Maggie was working on getting everything set up. Your monitors and ivs were being prepped as well as some different medications. Hailey came jogging in not long after Jay stepped out. She had your bag and Clarissa’s bag in her hand.
“Alright Momma. Let’s get you into your gown while Jay is out.” Hailey said, smiling sweetly once she put all my bags in the corner of my room.
I nodded and started to move when I felt the next contraction. Hailey was quick to grab my hand and guide me through it. Maggie grabbed a rag and started patting the sweat off of my forehead and neck. “Jay! Time!” Hailey yelled. Unknown to me, Jay was right outside the door. “Still 7 minutes!” Jay shouted back before we heard frantic murmuring that could only mean he was trying to calm Matt and/or Kelly.
Maggie nodded and smiled. “Still a while to go.” She said, rubbing my back as the contraction died out. “Let’s get you into that gown so we can hook you up and give you the good stuff. You want the epidural?” Maggie asked as Hailey helped pull me up.
“God yes.” I muttered, making both Maggie and Hailey chuckle.
“You got it. We gotta check you first, but I’m sure your far enough along.” Maggie said, helping Hailey pull off your shirt.
Once they had you settled, Natalie and Jay walked in. “Hey you! Ready for the baby?” Natalie asked, coming to help Maggie place the fetal monitor.
“As I’ll ever be.” I huffed, leaning back as another contraction hit. “Holy hell.” I gritted out, taking the hand that was offered. Once it passed, I looked up to find Jay smiling at me. “ETA on dumb and dumber?” I asked, causing everyone to chuckle.
Jay chuckled before replying, “20 minutes give or take.” At your sigh, Jay smirked before teasing, “What? Is my hand not good enough to squeeze?” He quirked an eyebrow as he waited for my answer.
I giggled. “On the contrary, it’s perfect. Thanks Jay.” I smirked, squeezing his hand hard for no reason.
Jay gasped in mock hurt, pulling his hand away. “Hailey. She hurt me.” Jay whined, causing his girlfriend to chuckle.
“Well, don’t mess with the pregnant woman. Much less one who’s in labor.” She playfully chastised, swatting Jay upside the head.
A new chuckle joined the group as Will walked in on the scene. “FINALLY. I’ve been needing to get him for a while now. Thanks Hailey.” Will teased, high-fiving the woman.
Hailey laughed and playfully bowed, letting out a terrible “my pleasure” in a British accent.
Maggie laughed before she taped down the IV, which you didn’t notice she put in. “Great job guys. I might hire you to preform in the ED if you can keep a person with trypanophobia distracted like this one.” She praised, smiling at the group.
“Might need your act when she gets that epidural later.” Natalie commented, looking at the monitors and jotting a few things down. “I need to check her. Y/n, you want these guys out or just to stand by your head?” Natalie asked, coming down toward the end of your bed.
You looked to everyone in the room. “Ummm. Can at least Hailey stay?” You asked, not wanting to be alone but not wanting to ask Jay either.
Jay and Will nodded, quickly saying goodbye and walking out of the room and into the hall. Hailey made her way to the head of your bed and grabbed your hand. “We got this.” Hailey comforted, rubbing her thumb over the back of your hand.
At your nod, Natalie warned of a little pressure before checking you. You squeezed Hailey’s hand, slightly uncomfortable with the pressure, but not in any pain. “Your half way!” Natalie smiled, giggling as you groaned. “I know. I know. Trust me, I felt the same way with Owen. We will get you at epidural though, okay?” Natalie assured, patting your knee as she started walking to the trash can to dispose of her glove. “You call me if you need ANYTHING. I’ll come in and check on you in a bit.” She reassured, smiling and waving as she opened the door.
Jay and Will walked back in not long after. “Soooooo?” Jay asked, hands in his pocket as he rocked in place.
“Half way.” I grumbled, pouting and crossing my arms like a child. “Fuck Matt Casey.” I said, causing everyone to chuckle.
“I think that’s what got us in this situation in the first place.” Matt answered, coming into the room with his face covered in soot, followed by a matching Kelly Severide and Stella Kidd.
Kelly was grinning as he approached you, leaning down to give you a careful kiss on the crown of your head. Stella was smiling widely, trying to keep her excitement at bay knowing that she would be able to hold her Goddaughter today.
“Alright. Too many people in here. If your meant to be here, you can stay. The rest of you meet your family out in the waiting room.” Maggie lightly chastised. She was happy to see something good coming out of this family. It had undoubtedly been a rough few years for everyone, but she needed to make room for other nurses and doctors to tend to you.
Will, Hailey, Jay, and Stella all said their goodbyes to you, wishing you luck. They promised they wouldn’t leave and to call if you needed anything. Each gave you a pat on the leg or kiss on the head on their way out. You had asked Kelly a while ago to be the other one in the room with you and Matt. Kelly is both of your best friend and Matt’s, so you knew he would be a solid presence during all the chaos.
~Seven hours later~
You and Matt were so in love with your baby girl. Neither of you could tear yourselves away, so you sent Kelly to inform the troops that Clarissa Hope Casey had made her appearance into the world. You and Matt chuckled at the cheers your family let out. You laughed even harder as you could hear multiple people shushing the crazy firefighters and police officers.
“We’re gonna make this work.” Matt assured, cradling your baby in his arms. “Whatever makes you comfortable and helps you the most. We will do.” Matt assured, swaying as he started talking to your baby. “Daddy already loves you soooo much princess. You’ve got a whole waiting room of family ready to see you.” Matt cooed, letting Clairy grab one of his fingers.
I smiled at the site. “Go introduce her. Just, please don’t let them pass her around.” I laughed, imagining grown men and women climbing over each other to get to your baby.
Matt cracked a smile, looking up at you. “Over my dead body.” He said, trying to make a serious face but failing incredibly. “Come on, let’s go meet your family.” Matt whispered, gently pressing a kiss to Clarissa’s head.
You knew it in that moment. It didn’t really matter what schedule you had or where you and your baby slept at night. You knew that no matter what, she would be protected, loved, and extremely cared for. Co-parenting could look a thousand different ways, but the truth is that your village was going to make sure you, Matt, and most of all Clairy were happy and taken care of. After all, it takes a village to raise a child and Clarissa Hope had the best one in the whole world.

Connor and the Brat {Part 12}
Tumblr media
It was deathly silent in the car and Connor didn’t like it one bit. Brat had barely said one word to him once he had gotten to the hospital and signed all of the necessary paperwork. She grabbed her things and basically ran past him and out to the car worrying not only Connor but the rest of the Med staff as well. Had they let her leave too soon? Will urged Connor to text him and Natalie when he had Brat settled and he promised to do so before running after her. Even now Connor dared to glance at her and even he wasn’t sure this was the right call having her go with him. Her face showed no emotion but her body was tense and rigid and if she tried to get any further away from him she would be sitting in the road.
“Can you stop looking at me like that please?” Connor’s not sure what he was expecting but considering he had been staring at Brat like she was going to jump into oncoming traffic for the last two minutes he probably should have guessed she would be snippy with him. Still it hurt, he had proven time and time again he cared for her and just when he thought they were on good terms again she went and acted bitchy towards him.
“Not when you look like you want to hurl yourself into oncoming traffic, no I can’t.” She threw her hands up in the air exasperatedly and Connor momentarily thought maybe he had blown things out of proportion. But quickly put that thought aside. It wasn’t just him that thought something was off with Ravenna, Will and Natalie both had commented on it while Ava just shrugged it off and suggested everyone mind their business and she would tell people when she was ready.
“I just slept like shit last night and I was ready to leave because I really didn’t want to be in the loony bin any longer and then everyone whispers and says I’m still crazy but I just want to leave and sleep. Sorry that’s I’m a little fucking irritated with everyone right now.” Okay so maybe Connor had blown things out of proportion and he should have just listened to Ava. He sighed and sat a hand on Brats knee and to his surprise she didn’t knock him away but curled her hand around his.
“I’m sorry Brat, no one meant to make you uncomfortable. We’re all just nervous because this is your first day home and we want you to have a good day.” She gave him a small reassuring smile as he pulled into the parking garage for his condo and nodded her head.
“I know but you don’t have to treat me with kid gloves and watch me like you’re worried I’m gonna slit my throat every five seconds. It makes me feel like I’m still in the psych ward.” He winced when she said it like that but he supposed she had a point they were all still watching her like she was a psych patient and he didn’t want her to feel like she was one at all, he wanted her to feel like her normal self, a functioning member of society.
“We’ll come on in then so I can show you your room. I had Ava decorate it because I had a feeling she would know your style more than I did.” She smiled at him and grabbed the last of her bags following along after him and waiting as he punched the code to get in the building. They got into the elevator and rode up to his floor and she waited as he unlocked his front door. “Before I forget.” He added as he placed a key into her hand. The bags were forgotten and he led her down the hallway to her room.
Tumblr media
“Oh it’s beautiful, I love the candles.” Connor smiled pleased that she liked her room, and pleased that she liked the candles Ava said were too medieval for her room.
“The candles were the only say I had, Ava picked everything else out. I’ll leave you to settle your things in. You can come find me in the living room when you’re done.” Brat nodded and Connor watched her for a few more seconds before shutting the bedroom door and pulling his phone out to text Will like he had promised.
Connor- Talked with Brat, she was just stressed and tired, seems to love new bedroom
Will- Good to hear, Nat was really worried about her. Wanna get a drink tonight?
Connor read Will’s message and wondered if it would be irresponsible to leave Brat alone on her first night home, then again he supposed she could always come with him. He bit his lip and walked down the hallway knocking on Brats door and waiting for an answer before entering. She was putting her clothes away still and he tried to ignore the fact she had paused mid putting away and was currently holding her lacy underwear in the air. She seemed to notice she was doing so and dropped them quickly blushing slightly at him.
“What’s up?” Connor sat down on her bed and cleared his throat trying to get rid of how dry it had gotten saying the thin material dangling in her fingers.
“Will was wanting to go for drinks tonight, do you feel like company?” He could tell just be her facial features going out to a crowded bar was the last thing she wanted to do.
“I really just wanna stay in and be lazy, but you should go if you want to. I don’t want to keep you from your friends.” Connor considered this, it could be a well disguised trick and maybe Brat was planning on doing something when he was gone, maybe this was her plan all along.
“What if I have Ava come over?” But Brat shook her head at him.
“She talked Sarah into getting dinner tonight, really I’ll be fine on my own.” Brat looked earnest and he couldn’t see any signs of deception on her face so Connor gave in with a resigned sigh.
“Alright I’ll go out with Will.” He stood and left Brat to finish unpacking her things in peace and to text Will back.
Connor- One drink but then I have to get back to Brat
Will- Ava was right
Connor- I will end both of you right now
Will- 😂😂😂 Just meet me, Nat, Jay, Hayley, April and Maggie and Mollys at 8 stud.
Connor rolled his eyes and tossed his phone towards the couch. He really hated his friends sometimes but they weren’t wrong, he absolutely wanted Brat and it was becoming a problem.

Y/N Is in the ED ~ 1
tw: hospital & emergency room, cursing, physical pain, illness, injury, mentioning of a car accident pairings: natalie manning x fem!reader patient, will halstead x fem!reader patient, april sexton x fem!reader patient other characters mentioned: maggie lockwood
It's 5 pm and you've had enough. You've been sick with a cold for six weeks. You went to the doctor after two, and they said it's just a cold -- exactly what you thought. You've been suffering from a runny nose and a cough for over a month, and you're sick and tired of having coughing attacks and blowing your nose constantly. You decide to drive yourself to the hospital, knowing damn well that you'll be sitting in the waiting room until 10:00, but you can't take it any longer.
One second you're pulling into the hospital parking lot, the next you're being picked up by a doctor who has red hair. He's running towards the hospital entrance with you in his arms.
"Incoming! Dr. Manning, meet Dr. Halstead in trauma two!" Maggie yells, nudging her over.
"Oh my God," Nat says, running over to trauma two just as Will gets there, "what have we got?" "I found her in the parking lot unconscious, her vehicle maybe twenty feet away. She regained consciousness as I picked her up, but I'm not sure if she knows what's happening," he replies, placing you onto the hospital bed. "She keeps coughing.  No blood, as far as I can tell," he says, as Nat hooks you up to an IV. "Looks like her left ankle is broken, as well as her right wrist and left index finger. Multiple lesions on the arms and face, most likely from the glass when she was thrown from her vehicle."
"Oh my God, what happened to me," you say, suddenly fully awake as you sit up in bed. "Hey, hey, easy there, easy," Will says, gently pushing you back down. "I'm fine, I'm fine. I just have a cold. I was coming here because of that. That's why I'm coughing. I've had a cold for six weeks and it hasn't gone away. I wanted to see if something was wrong."
Nat looks at Will, now even more concerned.
"What's your name?" she asks, handing a tablet to Will. "Y/N.  My name's Y/N," you say, your voice shaking. "Heart rate spiking," Nat says, rushing over to get closer to you. "I'm fine. It's just anxiety. Promise." "I'm Dr. Manning, and this is Dr. Halstead. We're gonna take really good care of you, Y/N. How old are you? Is there anyone we can call?" "I'm 18. I live alone. My family lives halfway across the country. I don't want to worry any of my friends. I'm fine. I'm telling you."
"Someone who was thrown from their vehicle isn't fine. You have three broken bones, probably more that we aren't aware of yet," Will exclaims, making eye contact with Natalie before they both look back down at you.
"I WHAT?! I was wearing a seatbelt!  How-"
"Y/N, what car do you drive?" Natalie asks you, a concerned look growing across her face. "Um, um... a 1962 Corvette, why? Is-is that bad?" "Older cars are known to be more faulty. Could explain the broken seatbelt. Is it an across-the-chest one, or does it just go across your waist?" "Chest, chest. I made sure when I bought it."
"Wait, why don't I feel the broken bones...?" "We're gonna find out. April, I want a full CT, CBC, BNP, MRI, X-ray of the arms and legs, and a chest X-ray. You know, why not just do a full-body X-ray? While you're at it, might as well."
"Y/N, I'm going to press on your abdomen. Tell me if you feel any pain." "AH!" you yell out, flinching when Nat touches various places on your stomach. "Few broken ribs." "No, no, no, no!" "We are going to do our very best to take care of you, alright, love? Just take a deep breath," Nat says, taking your hand. "I can't- OH MY GOD NOW I FEEL IT," you yell out, squeezing her hand. "April, give her 5 milligrams of morphine. I need those X-rays NOW. The delay in pain must have been from the trauma on her body." "On it," she replies.
"Oh my God," you moan out in pain, pulling your knees into your chest, then flinching again. "It hurts, it hurts. Please make it stop." "Y/N, I need you to stay still so we can take these X-rays, alright? It'll only take a second," Nat says, nodding. She takes a deep breath with you, which helps you slow your heart rate. "Are you sure you don't want us to call anyone for you? I'm sure your parents would want to know what's going on," she says, starting the X-rays. "No, no. They live too far away. I don't want to make them worry, or make them feel obligated to come here. It's alright." "Okay, well, let us know if you change your mind," she smiles. "Thanks."
"Yep, looks like a broken left ankle, right wrist, left index finger, and three broken ribs. Only the ankle has to be reset. Your left hip is also dislocated. I'm gonna need to pop it back into place as well." "Oh my gosh, how bad is my ankle?" you ask her, panicking as your eyes grow wide. "Pretty bad," Will says, tilting his head. "No, no, no, this can't be happening. Oh my God. Oh my God. I never should have come here.  It's just a cold. Why on Earth did this have to happen? Why?" "Y/N, everything is going to be okay," Nat says, helping you get into position for the chest X-ray. "No, no, you don't understand. I don't have time for a broken ankle! Or a broken anything, for that matter." Nat and Will look at each other, confused. "I'm a dancer and an actress. I have to be on set tomorrow for a film I'm shooting, and I have to perform in a ballet in a week. I'm the lead. I have to dance. This is tech week. Rehearsals are mandatory!" "You don't have an understudy or something?" he asks, making eye contact with Natalie again. "Yes, yes, but I have to dance! Let alone film! Production ends in less than a month!" you say, tearing up, and Nat takes your hand again, nodding to Will.
"Y/N, I have to reset your ankle now.  It's going to hurt," he says, walking towards the end of the bed. "How much is it going to hurt?" you ask, your voice quivering. "A lot." "How broken is it?!" He clears his throat. "Very." You start tearing up as your heart rate spikes to 200.
"Y/N, Y/N, sweetie, you have to take a deep breath. Just try to relax," Nat says, squeezing your fingers, being careful to avoid your wrist. "I can't, I can't!" "Breathe.  Just breathe." "AHHH!," you scream out in pain, "OH MY GOD, THAT HURTS LIKE A BITCH." Will did it by surprise.
"Y/N, hey, hey! You're alright. You're okay. You did a great job. I'm right here, I'm right here. You're safe," Nat says to you softly, rubbing your shoulder.
"No, no, I'm very much not.  Now you have to pop my literal hip back into its socket. I'm assuming that's more painful than just having a dislocated hip? And a broken ankle being reset?" "Very much so," Will replies. "God, why. At least you're honest, I guess."
"It's okay, you're okay," Nat moves your hair out of your face. "Please, Dr. Halstead." "I promise I'm going to fix your hip." "But it's gonna hurt," you say, looking over at Nat as a single tear escapes from your right eye. She looks at you in sympathy, giving your hand another squeeze. "It's gonna be okay.  Take a deep breath," she says, grabbing a hold of your hip with her other hand.
Will and Nat nod at each other and he pulls on your leg. You scream in pain and begin to sob, grabbing onto the side of the bed with your left hand, and squeezing Nat's hand with your right one, despite the pain in your finger and wrist. "Pull, pull!" she yells at Will, and you scream the most when he finally pops it back into place.
"You're alright, you're alright.  Breathe." You take a deep, shaky breath with Nat's help. "I'll be back to check on you soon. Just try to relax. You're gonna be okay," Nat says, giving your hand one more squeeze. Will gives you a smile. He and Natalie exchange a worried and sympathetic look before they head off to take care of more patients.
"Don't worry.  We've got you, honey.  I'm gonna have to take your blood now.  Is that okay?" April says, tying the band around your arm before she squeezes your shoulder.  You nod.
You know you're in good hands. The doctors and nurses are going to take great care of you. They've got you.

Unspoken Desires
Request: Hmm for the kiss prompt… how about #34 “Kiss me and then tell me you don’t feel anything.”❤️❤️ (it was hard to pick, i saw several I liked 😂
Prompt: Kiss me and then tell me you don’t feel anything.
Pairings: Will Halstead x Reader
Warnings: angst, fluff, pregnancy, talk of cheating (there is no cheating)
Masterlist
Kiss Prompts
Tumblr media
You knew Will would’ve gained a lot of attention at work and out in public. How could he not? He was downright handsome. You knew you shouldn’t feel jealous because you had him all to yourself. You are his best friend and girlfriend and you couldn’t have asked for anything else. You had grown up with the Halstead brothers so you had known them your whole life and had to watch Will go from girlfriend to girlfriend and it killed you but you supported him and was there for him when a breakup happened. When he went off to med school you went with him and it was the best decision ever. Again, you had to watch him go through what he did when he was younger but in your last year of college you both confessed your feelings to one another and had begun dating. He was very loyal and so were you but the jealousy was still there when girls would flirt with him and if he was drinking, he would flirt back and you knew it didn’t mean anything but it still hurt.
You were lucky to be able to go where he went. Now you both were at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center and you were loving it. Along the way you met some amazing people and you were proud to call them your friends, one of those people being Connor Rhodes. There was one person that you had butted heads with and that was Natalie Manning. She had taken a liking to Will and as many times he had assured you that nothing would ever happen and he wasn’t going to leave you and that he loved you, you were still jealous and on edge.
When you and Will had moved to Chicago you both had gotten an apartment together which made it easier in the long run but now you were wishing you had gotten one of your own. Lately he had been being secretive, coming home late, avoiding you at work, and to add salt to the wound he has been spending time with Natalie. It really has started to put a strain on your long-term relationship. It was getting to you so much you were considering switching shifts to avoid him and Natalie or take on double shifts. To add onto this stress of Will possibly cheating, you had also been feeling sick and just off which you just chalked it up to being stressed but boy were you wrong.
The alarm went off bright and early and it had both you and Will waking up. You had ended up on your side during the night and he rolled over and spooned you “Good morning, Baby.” He said in a sweet gruff voice that you loved oh so much but now it just brought tears to your eyes. A sniffle escaped you before you could answer and that had Will sitting up “Are you ok?” He asked and you wiped your eyes with the back of your hand and nodded.
“Yea, just fine.” You said and turned to look at him with a smile that didn’t quite reach your eyes and he frowned.
“Are you sure?” He asked and you nodded and started to get up.
“Yea, I’m fine. I’m working a double tonight.” You told him while you started to get ready for work.
“Oh? When did you find this out?” He asked, walking in as you spit the toothpaste out and you looked up at him in the mirror.
“When I asked Goodwin.” You said and wiped your mouth and moved into the bedroom and started to get dressed in your scrubs.
“What made you pick up a double shift?” He asked, having brushed his teeth and started getting ready and you shrugged.
“Just felt like I need it and the hospital has been understaffed.” You said and when you were done getting dressed you turned to look at him. “I’m gonna start getting things ready to go and then I leave.” You said and walked over and kissed him but it just felt forced. You were out of the bedroom and into the kitchen before he could respond. When he walked into the kitchen you were already gone and breakfast along with coffee was waiting there for him. He sighed to himself but he pulled out the ring that was in his bag and looked at it and couldn’t wait to get it on your finger. You arrived at work and put your things in the locker room and headed greeting Maggie “Good morning.” You said and she looked at you and you looked back at her with a smile and she could something was wrong.
“Ok, what’s up?” She asked and you shook your head.
“Why would you think something is wrong?” You asked as you took the tablet that she handed to you.
“Your smile doesn’t reach your eyes. You didn’t come in with Will.” She started and when she said Will’s name you cringed.
“Ok, so this is about Will.” She said and you looked at her silently confirming it. “What’s up?” She asked, turning her full attention to you.
“I think he’s been cheating on me with Dr. Manning and I’ve been so stressed about it that it’s starting to make me sick.” You said with a sigh.
“What? He absolutely adores you. Just saying your name lights him up.” She said “Speaking of Will, here he comes.” She said looking at him look around for you and when he saw you, he smiled but frowned when you didn’t even look up and he started to walk over.
“Hey.” He said and went to touch you but you flinched away.
“I gotta go.” You said and disappeared into a room and Maggie looked over to him.
“What did you do?” She asked and he looked at her confused.
“Nothing, that I know of.” He said and she glared at him.
“If I find out you did something like cheat on her. I will personally make your shifts a living hell and give you the worst cases that come in each time. Don’t test me.” She said and walked away leaving a confused Will alone.
Break time came around just as soon as you finished your last patient and you were exhausted, which had been happening more and more. You had just walked out of the cafeteria when you saw Will and Nataile talking but it was more just professional talk, they were leaned up close to each other and were smiling. Your stomach churned and all you wanted to do was throw up but rage filled you and what finally broke you was when they hugged. You stormed over there and when he looked up seeing you coming, he smiled but frowned when he saw the look on your face. “Y/N.” He said and Natalie was turning towards you.
“I can’t believe you. I can’t believe that you wasted all of these years and you go and cheat on me.” You said keeping your voice low but still loud enough “You know what? I’m done. I’m done making myself sick over this. We’re done. I don’t love you anymore. Natalie.” You turned to her “You can have him. Clearly my love for him wasn’t enough. I can’t believe I actually loved him.” You said and then stormed off with both of them calling your name but you just wanted to be gone from them and get to a bathroom. When you were far enough away you walked into the bathroom and into a stall and had just enough time to fall onto your knees and empty the contents out of your stomach. After a few minutes the door opened and the voice of Ava Baker was heard.
“Y/N? Are you ok?” She asked and you stood up and wiped your mouth and flushed the toilet.
“No, I’ve been so stressed about Will cheating, which I confirmed, that I’ve made myself sick and my period hasn’t come….” You trailed off.
“Oh, Honey.” She said and brought you into her arms but that didn’t last long because you were back on your news vomiting. She knelt down and rubbed your back “How long has this been going on?” She asked and you looked at her when you were done.
“A month.” You said and grabbed a piece of toilet paper and wiped your mouth and threw it into the toilet and flushed it.
“You’re pregnant.” She said and you looked at her with a crazy look on your face.
“No, I can’t be. It’s just stress.” You said and she smiled at you sadly.
“Let’s go get you checked out.” She said and helped you stand up and walk out of the bathroom and into a room. She made you lay down and pull your shirt up and grabbed the ultrasound and turned it on and put the wand to your stomach. Nobody spoke but when she got to the baby she stopped and smiled. “There is your baby. Looks like you’re a month along.” She said and you looked at the screen stunned. You were pregnant and you had just broken up with the father and now on your own. “You want a copy?” She asked and you nodded too stunned to speak. She froze the picture and printed out a copy and then gave you something to wipe off the gel.
“What am I going to do?” You asked, looking at her.
“Talk to Will.” She said and you nodded and she left the room after she gave you a reassuring pat on the leg. You sat there looking at the picture and tears formed in your eyes, you needed air. You walked out of the room and ran into Natalie but when she tried to speak to you, you just hurriedly walked past her and up to the roof. You don’t know how long you were out there freezing but it felt good. You heard the door open but you didn’t turn around until you felt something being slipped over your shoulders. You saw it was Will and knew you couldn’t get away.
“Baby, I’m not cheating on you.” He said and you turned your head looking out into the city.
“Could’ve fooled me.” You said and you heard him sigh.
“Kiss me and then tell me you don’t feel anything.” He said and you looked at him and kissed him and when your lips met it was like the first time all over again and sparks flew. All your worries melted away. All too soon it was gone because he pulled away. “Did you feel anything?” He asked and you nodded.
“It was like the first time we kissed.” You said “It still doesn’t explain why you cheated on me.” You said he shook his head.
“I didn’t. I was having Natalie help me pick out a ring.” He said and you looked at him stunned.
“What?” You asked and he smiled.
“I had this all planned out but now is as good a time as any.” He said and pulled out a box with a ring inside and got down on one knee. “Y/N Y/M/ Y/L/N, you have made me the happiest man alive and have since we were kids and I was stupid for not seeing it until our last year of med school. I wanna spend the rest of my life with you and start a family. You’re it for me. I’m sorry that I made you think I was cheating on you. Will you make me the happiest man alive and marry me?” He asked and you had tears streaming down your cheeks and you nodded.
“Of course. I would love to marry you and start a family with you.” You said and he smiled and slipped the ring on your finger and got up. “Starting a family is gonna happen a little earlier.” You said and now he looked confused and you pulled out the sonogram. “I’m pregnant.” You said with a smile.
“What? When did you find this out?” He asked, looking at it in awe.
“When I stormed away, I went to the bathroom to throw up and Ava came in and found me. She made me let her do an ultrasound. I’m a month a long.” You said he looked up at you and smiled then he was picking you and kissing you hard and then putting you down gently.
“Oh, Baby. This is amazing! I just got a super-hot fiancée and just learned she is pregnant with my child. I can’t wait to tell Jay.” He said and then bent down where he was in level with your stomach. “Hi there. I’m your daddy. I love you and your mommy so much. I can’t wait to meet you.” He said and kissed your stomach and you ran a hand through his hair as tears escaped. You couldn’t believe you were gonna throw all of this away but now you have the father of your unborn child back and you were engaged to him. You smiled because everything was gonna be just fine as long as you had your loving fiancée, the father of your unborn child, and love of your life with you.
