Part 1 | Part 2
Tumblr media
“We’ll take care of you and your daughter.” You smiled at your patient reassuringly, noticing someone moving towards you in corner of your eye. Turning your head you saw a man with tousled hair standing at the threshold, his eyes almost hazy as his gaze skipped around the room.
“Where’s Leah?!”, he barked out, his eyes only focused on your patient. Your gaze flickered towards her, taking in the fear in her eyes and the gasp that left her lips. “Jake? How did you find us here?”, she whispered, oblivion dripping from her voice.
“Did you really think you could just leave and take our daughter with you? She’s my daughter too!” He took a threatening step closer, eyes narrowed. “Now, where is she?!”
Your patient’s breathing had quickened and a look at the heart monitor told you she was about to have a panic attack. “Sir, I need you to calm down and take a step back”, you said forcefully, drawing his attention on you. His eyes jumped to you, anger brimming in them.
“Like hell I will! I’m taking my wife and my kid home now!” Your eyes flickered towards the nurse, giving her a little nod to signal her to call the security service, before you met his again. “I can see you’re upset. But your wife and your daughter are sick. They need treatment and rest-”
“Shut up!” You flinched as he yelled at you, his loud voice alarming multiple people around you. “Everything okay in here?” Will appeared at the door, his eyes scanning the room until they landed at yours, staying there as he waited for an honest answer.
The man shook his head furiously, but he took a step back. You almost exhaled in relief. “I want to see my daughter! Now!”, he demanded, but before anyone could gave him an answer, he turned and ripped open the curtain to the next room.
You heard squeals, alarmed voices mixing with the sound of another curtain being ripped open. “Sir, I need you to leave now!” Will leaned forward to grab the man’s shoulder when suddenly he yanked out a gun, twisting around and pointing it right at Will’s chest.
A gasp escaped you as you watched Will stumble back, his hands raised. “Look man, we’re just trying to help, okay?” But the man, Jake, didn’t seem to hear any of it, his eyes filled with hatred and something that scared you even more; desperation and determination. A dangerous combination.
He wouldn’t leave until he got what he wanted.
“What’s going on here?” You heard Connor’s voice, saw him step out of a patient’s room and move towards the intruder. From his angle he couldn’t see the gun, couldn’t know the severity of the situation.
“Connor, no!” Your legs moved forward at the same time as the man turned around, the gun pointed at your brother. Everything seemed to happen so fast and in slow-motion at once as your body reacted purely on instinct, the fear for your brother carrying you forward.
You didn’t know if he meant to pull the trigger or if it was out of reflex, but you had no time to think about it as a shot rang out.
You would have screamed, but no sound left your mouth as the impact hit you, sending your body tumbling backwards until it hit the wall. Only moments before your feet had carried you forward, but now they suddenly couldn’t take your weight anymore, your body sinking to the ground.
Around you screams were erupting, but they sounded drowned out, as if you were underwater. Your name was being called, but it all seemed to blend into a haze.
You tried to peek at where you felt a sudden pressure in your body, shock mixing with confusion as you saw blood staining your clothes. Just seconds ago you had been standing in a patient’s room and now you were on the ground, your own blood pooling around your feet. It didn’t make sense.
From the periphery of your eye you saw people running. Some moved towards you, but most of them the opposite way. Away. They were running away.
And they were pushing, tripping, falling over each other. “Put down the gun!” You saw one of the security men approach, his own gun drawn at the attacker. Another shot cut through the atmosphere, but to your horror it was the security man that fell, blood splattering from a wound to his front.
“Everyone just back off!”
Jake’s sharp voice snapped you out of your shock and all at once reality hit you. Pain sank in, slowly at first and then in a stream of hot sensations. Tears formed in your eyes at the burning pain and you grit your teeth, trying to will it away, because you knew you needed to be aware of what happened next.
Lifting your head slightly you found the ER had mostly cleared out, only a few people remaining. Among them were Will and Connor, both of their bodies’ turned towards you in a way that suggested they had tried to get to you, their hands raised.
“Just let me get to my sister, okay? I’m a doctor and she needs help.” You stared at Connor, seeing the panic he tried to restrain as he appealed to the man reasonably. Jake’s eyes flickered towards you, hesitance written over his face.
“You didn’t want this to happen, do you?” Connor asked, his voice strained. “So let me make this better. Let me help.” He was pleading now and another wave of panic filled you as you realized he was only mere seconds away from doing something reckless.
For a moment you thought you were going to throw up from the sickness that cursed through your body, but you feared you wouldn’t even be able to move your body in the state you were in.
Jake let out a frustrated breath, gesturing towards you with his gun. “Okay. Okay!” Connor rushed over to you immediately, his concerned eyes meeting yours. “Are you okay? How do you feel? Can you tell me where you’ve been hit?”
You tried to follow his questions, your mind spinning. Instead of an answer you let out a groan as Connor found your wound, pressing down on it. “We need to stop the bleeding.”
Now that he was here by your side a weakness took over your body and you welcomed it. Welcomed the dark, because it felt easier to lean into it than fight it. But it never swallowed you. As much as you wished you could just pass out, the pain didn’t end, keeping you caged in your body.
You didn’t need to ask him how serious your condition was. The urgency in Connor’s movement alone was enough for you to confirm it was bad, the seeping hot pain a further indicator.
You saw Jake still waving his gun around, speaking in an animated tone with Will and Maggie. To your left someone had crouched down next to the security guard and you felt a flicker of relief when you saw it was Ethan.
A cough rose up your throat and your body shook, sending an ache through you. When you wiped your mouth you noticed your skin had turned red.
“No, no, no”, your brother whispered, his eyes frantic. “Connor”, you said, your voice a little hoarse. He paused for a moment, both of you locking eyes in a quiet exchange. “I’m scared”, you whispered, feeling a few tears escape your eyes.
Connor swallowed, his eyes filled with desperation. “I know”, he leaned closer, “But you will be okay. I will fix it, okay?.”
You nodded slowly, needing to cling to his words. To hold onto the reminder that you would be okay. That your life wasn’t over when you hadn’t even started fully living yet.
It didn’t make sense. You had woken up a few minutes before your alarm clock, had been in an oddly good mood as you had gotten ready for work and even your patients had been unusually patient and grateful. Today was a good day. Not a day that could turn into such a catastrophe in the blink of an eye.
This didn’t happen. Maybe in books or on tv. But not here, not to people like you.
“Hey!” Dr. Goodwin appeared in your vision, bending down to Connor and you. “What’s the status?” You hadn’t seen her before, but knowing she was here already gave you a sparkle of hope. As the hospital’s executive director it was her job to find solutions, even in the face of the worst possible events. She would get them out of here, somehow.
“She’s been shot in the abdomen. No exit wound so the bullet is still inside. I believe she’s bleeding internally.”
You saw a shadow cloud Dr. Goodwin’s as she looked at you and it was as if you could see the wheels in her head turning as she assessed the situation.
“What’s going on?”, you asked weakly, needing to know if the others were safe. “Mr. Whitman demands to take his wife and daughter and leave. I was on the phone with the Chicago police department. They told me he’s got a history of domestic abuse and violence. The wife filed a report on him and moved states to get him out of her life.”
“And he found her now.” You gulped, slowly piecing the pieces together. Dr. Goodwin nodded, graveness written over her face. “So what’s the plan?” It was Connor, his voice urgent.
Dr. Goodwin sighed, taking off her glasses and pinching the brick of her nose. You had never seen her like this, so defeated, and it filled you with unease.
“The police is here and a squad team too. But there is no way we can let them inside or get someone outside right now without Mr. Whitman noticing. Right now they are preparing for getting just one person in. Unarmed.”
“What help is that going to be?” Connor let out a scoff and it annoyed you how quick to judge he was, and more so, that you agreed with him. What would another person talking to Jake change?
“It would be a trained officer, who has the experience and skills to deal with these kind of high pressure situations. The plan would be for him to try and talk to Mr. Whitman first and if that’s not effective either, assess the situation and make a move or get back to the team and share valuable information with them.”
You could see Connor still shaking his head, but Dr. Goodwin stood again. “It’s the only thing Mr. Whitman has agreed to. You know I would prefer to get everyone else out, but he has been clear. If one person leaves, he is going to make use of his gun again.”
“And what are we supposed to do now? Just wait?”
“Connor”, you tried to calm him, but his eyes snapped to yours. “We need an OR now! Monique!” The blonde nurse standing next to Ethan looked over. You could see the fear written all over her face. “Can you take over for a moment?”
She gave a nod, her eyes flickering to Jake who didn’t let them out of sight. Crouching down next to you the two quickly exchanged their hands applying pressure onto your wound, the sensation making you let out a groan.
But you pushed away the pain, trying to focus on Connor. “What are you doing?”, you hissed as you watched him get up, wishing you could hold him back.
“Dr. Rhodes, we should wait for the officer to arrive. Right now the situation is stable and I can’t risk-” “Stable? Is that what you call this?” Connor pushed himself fully up now, the movement catching Jake’s eye.
“Sit back down!” But Connor lifted his hands, taking a cautious step forward. “My sister likely suffers from an internal bleeding. We need an OR to-” “No! Nobody goes anywhere!”
Connor’s face fell, his shoulders sinking, but he took another step forward. The grip the fear had around your heart tightened. “Please, I need to stop the bleeding. You don’t want her to die, right?”
Jake stared at you for a moment before his attention was back on your brother. “I just want my daughter and my wife!”
“And we get that. We do. But she-”, he turned halfway towards you, his eyes not leaving Jake for a second, “has nothing to do with this. Let me save her life.”
“I said no one goes anywhere! You save her here or you don’t save her at all. It’s on you!”
You watched Connor open his mouth again, but before he could say another word Jake stepped forward, his gun pointed directly at his chest.
“Do I look like someone who’s joking?!”, he yelled, making everyone around him flinch. Connor made himself a little smaller, taking a small step backwards while shaking his head. “Yeah, so you better listen to what I’m saying! No get your ass back down there!”
You didn’t have the heart to watch Connor when he returned to you, to see the defeat and hopeless on his face. The fear.
He had barely sat down again when another turmoil broke loose, gaining everyone’s attention. It had to be the officer Jake had allowed in, though you didn’t want to know what he would get in return for the favour.
Although you didn’t feel much hope regarding the plan, you trusted the police to make the right choice. This couldn’t be their first hostage situation, so they knew what to do, right?
What you hadn’t anticipated was that the officer coming in could be someone you knew. Someone you knew very well.
Jay.
No.
You blinked a few times, but it was unmistakably him.
His voice. His physique.
A touch at your hand drew your attention away from him for a moment and you noticed Monique had reached for it. Only now you saw you had balled your hand into a fist, all the tension left in your body visible in that one grip. Slowly she loosened it, taking your hand into hers instead and squeezing it in reassurance.
You didn’t know the young nurse so well- she was a little more on the reserved and quiet side- but the gesture filled you with deep gratitude, giving you the strength to look up again and face this new reality.
Jay hadn’t noticed you yet, his whole focus on calming Jake enough to make an uneventful entrance. When he seemed confident in the situation he scanned the room, assessing the conditions they were dealing with.
He did it with a professional calmness you wished you could have right now, his face only giving away his emotion when they fell on his brother. “Hey, man. You alright?”
He stepped forward, avoiding any rapid movements and Will nodded. “I’m okay. But Mrs. Kaden is in a bad condition. The stress on top of her physical state worries me.”
He said something else, but he had lowered his voice that it was impossible for you to understand anything. Jay nodded. “What about the two victims?”
“The security guard got hit at the shoulder. He’s stable.” “And the other one?” Will shook his head, his eyes filled with sadness. “She’s over there with Connor. It doesn’t look good, Jay.”
It was strange, listening to them and knowing they were talking about you. Waiting for the moment Jay’s eyes fell upon you.
You didn’t know what kind of reaction you were anticipating, but nothing could have prepared you for the utter shock that filled Jay’s face as he looked at you.
You watched him do a double take, every trace of his confidence and expressionlessness gone, replaced by a turmoil of emotions. He almost lunged forward, stopping himself when Jake’s warning voice filled the air.
You could see Connor’s questioning gaze on you, but you were focused fully on Jay as he made his way over to you with careful movements.
When he crouched down in front of you, he was close enough for you to see a hint of fear in his eyes. “What happened?”
Your petty argument, the distance, it all seemed forgotten as you stared at him, not strong enough to hide your own fear. “I got shot.”
Although it was obvious, it was the first time you had said the words out loud, had acknowledged the fact that this was really happening to you. It felt surreal, even with the burning pain spreading through your body, making it impossible to keep your composure.
Jay’s eyes softened as he heard your husky voice, the effort it took you to form the words another sign how bad your current shape was. For a moment his eyes drifted over your body, his face twisting in pain as he stared at your blood, before he looked up again.
“He said he’s going to kill us if he doesn’t walk out of here with his wife and his kid.” Jay nodded, his lips pressed into a thin line. “I know.”
“But- you’re here now…right?”
“Yeah, I am.” Jay tried to force an encouraging smile on his face, but you knew him well enough to know it was strained.
“You’re here”, you repeated relieved, your voice almost giving up at the end and you coughed. Jay stared at you, his eyes a little widened, his pupils dilated in fear.
He was scared. For you. He was scared for you.
“Her pulse is up to 120 and she’s sweating.” It was Monique and you saw her exchange a look with Connor. “What’s her condition?” Jay was talking to Connor now, as if he had only now realized he was there.
Under different circumstances your brother wouldn’t have let go what had just happened right in front of his eyes. He would have teased you until you would have told him the truth about Jay and you. But now he did, just like that, knowing there was no time for it as yours was running out.
The thought sent another wave of fear through your body, but with the hot pain and the growing weakness you felt too overwhelmed to do anything about it. So you tried to focus on the feeling of Monique’s hand holding yours, on Jay’s closeness and your brother’s words.
“The bullet likely caused internal bleeding. She’s losing too much blood.” Connor almost ran a hand over his face like he always did when he was stressed, stopping himself when he saw your blood on his hands.
“What do you need?”
“I need an OR. I need to find the bleeding and stop it.” His voice was a mix of desperation and determination and Jay listened intensely. His mask of professionalism was back in place, the sight having something grounding to it in the midst of this chaos, but you could detect a few flaws where his emotions threatened to pour in.
“I’m here to negotiate”, he began, eyes cast towards Jake, continuing lowly, “but really I think this will take a different ending.”
You wanted to ask him what that meant, but it seemed too difficult and you were forced to watch him get up instead. As Connor tried to get up too you tried to catch his wrist. You failed, but the movement still let him pause.
“Don’t go, please”, you whispered, your body shaking. You wished you could stop it, but you had lost all control over it, and when had it become so cold?
You felt Jay’s eyes on you as Connor leaned down to you, placing his hands on the sides of your face. “You’re sweating and your pulse is way up. Your skin is ice cold and you’re pale. I don’t need to tell you what that means. We need to do something now.”
You felt tears run down your cheeks as you tried to shake your head, silently pleading him to stay. He had already risked it with Jake once. What would he do when Connor tried it again and this time he wouldn’t give up?
“I’m coming back.” Connor stroked your cheek once before pressing a kiss against your forehead. Then he was gone, his touch only a faint memory as your head sank back against the wall.
As the two walked away from you they blurred into nothing more than silhouettes. Muffled voices filled your ears, but they were too drowned out for you to understand anything. Monique was speaking to you too, the level of her tone indicating she was saying something to soothe you, but her words never reached you either.
A part of you wanted to pass out. As much as you wanted to know what happened, with Connor and Jay not by your side any longer all your fight had left you. The pain felt unbearable now, as if someone had lit your body on fire and the flames were eating at you, slowly burning you alive.
Your throat was closing and it was getting hard to breathe. Every once in a while you choked on air, raspy coughs escaping your mouth. And it was so cold. Colder than the winter in Chicago.
The last sound you heard before the darkness finally swallowed you was a gunshot.
-
The first thing you felt when you woke was the heaviness of your body, as if an invisible weight had been placed upon you.
You could hear the steady beeping of a monitor, the sound having something reassuring to it. You listened to it for a while, too tired to pull yourself out of the haze yet.
But then the events of the day came crashing back to you, the image of Jay and Connor both leaving your side to get Jake to let them save you. The sound of a gun going off.
You blinked your eyes open, your vision only slowly clearing. But eventually it sharpened, revealing the inside of a hospital room.
You weren’t surprised at the sight, but you still paused when you took in the IV you were hooked upon. “Look who’s awake.”
Turning your head you found April at the door, a smile on her lips. But you could see it wasn’t as effortless as usual and you wondered where she had been when all of it had happened.
Had she gotten out, left to wonder about Ethan’s and everyone else’s wellbeing? Or had she been hiding in one of the other patient rooms?
“How are you feeling?” She stepped into the room, beginning her check-up on you. You let her do it, squinting when she shone a bright light in your eyes. “I’ve felt better before”, you answered truthfully, growing slightly more aware or the pressure in your abdomen.
At least it didn’t hurt yet. You didn’t want to think of the moment the pain meds would wear off.
“Where’s my brother?” April had finished her tests, squeezing your hand. “He’s still in the hospital. I told him to go home and get some rest, but he insisted on staying.”
April shook her head, clearly disapproving of your brother’s choices. “But I did get him to take a shower. He should be in the on-call rooms right now. Do you want me to go and get him?”
You thought about it for a moment. “No, let him sleep. It’s been a hell of a day for him too.”
April nodded, a small smile on her lips. “What about detective Halstead? Do you want me to send him home too?”
You stared at her in surprise. “He’s still here? Wait- how much time passed?”
“5 hours. And yes, he’s here. Actually, he just got himself a coffee. I might have forgotten to mention how disgusting the one from the vending machine is.”
“You’re evil.” You narrowed your eyes at her, chuckling. April shrugged. “Can’t have anyone know our secrets. So what is it with you and the other Halstead. Is he the one you’ve been texting this whole time?”
You hesitated, ready to deny her words, because you were used to keeping it a secret. But you weren’t sure that was possible after today, and honestly it all seemed so unimportant know that you had almost lost your life.
“We were. But things are kind of- complicated between us so I’m not sure where we’re standing.”
“Well”, April walked towards the door, a smile on her lips, “whatever it is it can’t be so serious. You should have seen the way he looked at you when you came out of surgery.”
Your chest tightened as a wave of emotions flooded you. “He really stayed for me?”
April grinned. “He might have claimed there to be paperwork at first. And then that he wanted to look after his brother. But Will went home hours ago and guess who spend the whole time of your surgery pacing the waiting room.”
April winked at you. “I’m going to search for Ethan now. I wanted to wait for you to wake up before leaving.”
Warmth filled you and you had to blink away the tears, touched by everyone’s concern for you. But the mention of Ethan’s name had also reminded you that you hadn’t been the only one hurt today.
“Is everyone okay? The security guard, did he make it?”
“Oh yeah, we’re all okay.” Before she could say another word someone else appeared in the doorway and April left, a knowing smile on her lips.
“Hey.” You didn’t think you had ever heard Jay speak so softly. It made you want to pull him close and snuggle up beside him, be safe in his arms and forget everything else.
“Hey”, you said, trying to sit up a little, but realizing it was a pointless mission.
You supressed a grin when you noticed the coffee cup in his hand, but Jay had followed your gaze, lifting it up. “That’s the worst coffee I’ve ever had”, he declared, “and we’ve only got a new machine at the precinct last year.”
You chuckled lightly. “We have the good one hidden in the break room. But don’t tell anyone I’ve told you that.”
Jay grinned. “Your secret’s safe with me.” Pulling a chair to your bedside and setting his cup on the nightstand he sat next to you, his eyes flickering over your face.
“I prefer when I am the one taking the bullet.”
He smiled, but it was a sad smile, the stress from the past hours visible on his face. “What can I say? You made it seem so effortless.”
But Jay didn’t seem amused, his eyes heavy. “When I heard about the hostage situation, I hoped you weren’t on shift. I called you, but you didn’t pick up.” He blew out a breath.
“And my brother didn’t either so-” He ran a hand over his face. “It’s why I needed to be the one going in. I needed to know if you were okay.”
“And they let you?” Although you knew they had, you were surprised Jay had been chosen. You didn’t doubt his capability as a cop, but just like you weren’t allowed to be on a personal case you had believed Jay’s involvement would have been a red flag as well.
“Not at first, no. But I was very convincing. And Voight’s not too strict about the rules anyway.”
You didn’t want to imagine the length Jay might have gone to, to get what he wanted. Especially with Voight, who didn’t appreciate anyone speaking up against him or acting out of line.
You stirred a little, your body beginning to ache. “What happened after I passed out?”
Jay’s brows drew together and you could see the graveness in his eyes. “He wouldn’t let you go.” His jaw hardened. “Like I said, negotiations didn’t work with him.”
“Does that mean…-”, you trailed of, your heart heavy. Jay gritted his teeth. “Our backup plan was for me to lead him somewhere the squat team could take the shot.”
“So he’s dead now?” You didn’t know what to feel when Jay nodded his head once. Certainly not regret, not after what he had done, but there was no relief either. Instead you just felt numb, like the turmoil of emotions you had experienced in the past hours had left you completely empty.
“And the mother and her kid?” “They are okay.” Jay seemed as relieved to deliver those news as you felt and for the first you truly allowed yourself to take a big exhale. “As okay as they can be under these circumstances.”
“How could he even walk in with a gun?” You shook your head in disbelief, wishing for answers you know you would never get. “The hospital’s head launched an investigation”, Jay told you and you imagined the stress Dr. Goodwin must be facing even now that it was over.
“That’s good I guess”, you muttered. “Yeah.” But Jay seemed somewhere else with his thoughts and for a moment you feared he would go back to being distanced towards you.
But to your surprise he leaned forward, his hand almost touching yours on the bed. “What happened?”
You scrunched up your nose in confusion. “To you. What happened to you? How did you get shot?”
You took a deep breath, knowing you would have to face that question again once Connor was up. He would be upset, but as much as you regretted your action, wished things had gone differently, you couldn’t say it had been a mistake. Not if you had prevented something worse, like a bullet hitting your brother.
“It all happened so fast.” You closed your eyes, trying to recall the moment. But your memories were hazy, the images blurry, only in fragments.
“I saw Connor coming out of a patient’s room and he- he couldn’t see the gun. Jake would have shot him. He- I- I had to do something.”
When you opened your eyes again you saw Jay’s green eyes staring intensely at you, his brows furrowed deeply.
A shadow covered his face, but it vanished before you could ask about it.
“So you’d rather get yourself killed?” It sounded a little accusing and your face fell, anger filling you. “Don’t you think I know that now? But you would have done the same for Will. I know you would have.”
Jay shifted. “That’s different”, he said, but you tilted your head at him. “I’m too tired for that conversation.”
Jay looked hurt and disappointed, but you didn’t regret your words. You couldn’t take his arguments now, not now when you were still coming to terms with the reality that you had almost lost your life.
“I didn’t know you were so selfless. I mean-”, Jay rubbed the back of his head, “I knew, because of your job and how you treat your patients, but taking a bullet for someone else? I didn’t know you were a hero.”
He was smiling now, trying to loosen the atmosphere, but this words had the opposite effect on you. “I’m not”, you said quietly. “I didn’t even mean to do that. My body just- reacted. That’s not bravery or selflessness.”
This time Jay touched your hand, the unexpected gesture drawing your attention back to him. “It’s always an instinct. It happens too quickly for anyone to make a conscious decision. It can be a reflex and still be brave. Because you didn’t hesitate.”
You hadn’t thought of it like that before and you started at him, your thoughts swirling in your brain as the desire to be close to him clouded your mind once more.
“Does it ever get easier?” You blinked, a little scared to be so vulnerable in front of him. “On tv they are fine after that. They are so cool about it. But what if I’m not fine? What if that was probably the worst thing that ever happened to me and I’m so scared?”
You bit your lip, forcing back the tears. But the truth was you weren’t ready to die yet. And coming so close to death had left its marks on you. You could feel it everywhere, as you gazed around the room, took in all the sensations you could feel, looked at Jay beside you. It was all so much.
“Hey.” Jay squeezed your hand. “That’s acting. It’s fake. You almost died. You’re not supposed to be fine right now.”
A tear escaped your eye and you wiped at it, trying not to be furious at yourself for losing your composure in front of Jay. “I don’t know how you do it. Getting shot at and still running towards danger and not away.”
Jay seemed sheepish out of a sudden, no hint of his usual confidence and wit. “It’s my job. Just like I could never do what you do.” You felt yourself smile a little, his recognition making you feel a little less small in the hospital bed. “And sometimes there are- things that happen on this job that you don’t just get over. We all have things we’re dealing with. Even I.”
Now you squeezed his hand, trying to show him you were there if he ever needed to talk to someone. Jay looked at you with gratitude in his eyes. He understood, even without words.
Silence settled in, but it didn’t feel uncomfortable. There came no pressure to come up with something to say, no need to say anything at all and you could see it was the same for Jay, his thoughts drifting.
“So Connor huh?”
You hadn’t expected the question, drawing your brows together. “What?”
Jay licked his lips, inhaling. “I saw you two together. And then today-”, he trailed off, gazing to the side as he collected himself.
“I don’t know what you saw-”, you began, but Jay raised a hand. “Don’t deny it. I’m not blind. It’s obvious how much you care for each other.”
You started at him, rendered speechless as you tried to imagine what he could have seen. But it didn’t matter, because Jay was- “You’re jealous!”
He twisted in his chair, pulling his hand away. “I’m not jealous”, he said, but you shook your head, grinning. “Yes, you are.”
Annoyance flashed over his face. “I just don’t like to be played with.” Your smile faded a little, but the relief you felt only grew as your slowly began to piece it all together.
“That’s why you acted so cold towards me out of a sudden. You saw me and Connor and you thought-” You almost let out a laugh, only suppressing it as you took in Jay’s unamused expression.
“Well detective Halstead, Connor is my brother.”
You watched with delight how his face turned into confusion, surprise and then hope. “He’s your brother”, he repeated in disbelief and you nodded. “I told you I came to Chicago, because I have family here.”
Jay let out a groan, the previous tension melting from his body as your words sank in. “But Will-”, he paused, clearly rethinking something his brother had said to him, “that bastard. When I saw you together I asked him about you and he warned me not to try anything, because of Connor. He never thought to mention once that he’s your brother.”
“You asked Will about me?”
Jay narrowed his eyes playfully. “That’s what you’re concerned about?”
You let out a laugh. “Not concerned, no. I just- you asked your brother about me.”
Jay raised his brow. “Why is that so hard to believe? I mean, you asked him about me too.”
Your face flushed. “I did not!”
“Yes, you did!” Jay chuckled, clearly enjoying your embarrassment. “Will told me about it. It’s why he got so suspicious so fast when I brought you up.”
“And then he mentioned Connor and you figured-” “he said that if I tried anything with you I would have to deal with Connor Rhodes. And it’s not like you two have the same last name.”
“Different moms”, you explained and he sighed. “I should have just talked to you, but I got so mad and then I heard you two talk and I just- reacted.”
“You should have”, you agreed, “but I should have been more open with you too.”
“So, let’s try again?”
His voice sounded so soft when he said it you felt yourself melt under the covers. “If you’re ready to deal with Connor Rhodes”, you pointed out playfully and Jay shrugged, his natural confidence back.
“After I helped save your life I’m pretty sure I’m well in with him. Which reminds me, you owe me three times now.”
You rolled your eyes, feeling the tiredness return to your body. Soon enough you would be drifting off again. “It’s twice, considering you cancelled our first date.”
Jay grinned. “Fair enough. But I’m taking you out once you’re out of here.”
You smiled. “I’m counting on it.”

nsfw alphabet [ erin lindsay ]
⋯ WARNINGS ; gn!reader + smut [ oral sex, cum, kinks, masturbation ]
⋯ NOTE ; if you are under the age of 18, do not interact [ nsfw content under cut ] this content is strictly for those 18+ ; any minors // ageless // blank blogs interacting with this post will be blocked
Tumblr media
a = aftercare [ what they’re like after sex ]
erin is very keen on aftercare and it’s truly were she shines -- consider it as her way of showing love and affection. if you didn’t manage to render her limbs to jello, she’s the first one up and to the bathroom. either to grab you warm washcloth or get a bath started for the both of you
with the washcloth, she gently wipes the both of you down, before cuddling up next to you and lavishing you with kisses. otherwise, she’ll guide you to the bath and let you rest back against her in the tub. hands skimming along your sides until you’re fully relaxed and ready to get out
alternatively, if she’s still shaking from the aftershocks of her orgasm, then you’ll gladly take over caring for her and making sure she’s well loved
b = body part [ their favorite body part of theirs, and also their partner’s ]
herself — she’s at odds on what she would consider to be her ‘favorite’ body part, and if asked, she doesn’t really have an answer to give unless given some time to actually think about it. so, she would probably say something like her hands or mouth -- both she feels can adequately give her partner pleasure, while not feeling to overly cocky about choosing something else
you — she would probably say something simple like your eyes. and to be fair, it’s the first thing she noticed when the two of you first met. she likes look you in the eyes, whether just to obverse or during intimate moments, it’s something that she will always look for
c = cum [ anything to do with cum basically…i’m a disgusting person ]
doesn’t have to many problems with getting a little dirty with cum, whether it be on her lips, fingers, or other body parts. with respect to anatomy, she does’t mind if her partners cum inside of her -- so long as both are on the same page before hand.
d = dirty secret [ pretty self-explanatory, a dirty secret of theirs ]
while she wouldn’t ever outwardly say it, she does like the idea of using her position as a intelligence detective and the tools that come with it. it’s more of a role-play situation, but she’s a little too embarrassed to bring it up as she typically likes to keep work and pleasure separate.
e = experience [ how experienced are they? do they know what they’re doing? ]
erin has experience with a few partners, more so with male partners than female and non-binary partners. she does, to an extent, know what she’s doing in the realm of bringing pleasure to someone, but she’s not afraid to keep learning to make sure whatever partner she’s with is well taken care of on her part
f = favorite position [ this goes without saying ]
missionary — she likes the intimacy of the position, getting to see your eyes and watch your facial expressions with each movement and kiss. it’s truly something that blesses her eyes and brings her the most warmth
cowgirl — one of her own favorite positions considering she can take control and tell you what to do, for the most part.plus, it’s another position she can use to look into your eyes
g = goofy [ are they more serious in the moment, or are they humorous, etc ]
there are some moments where erin can be a little humorous in the moment. such as if the two of you bump noses or one of you falls over while trying to get their jeans or shirt off -- basically just moments to keep the other from feeling embarrassed. otherwise, she tends to take any and all sexual encounters seriously. wanting to make sure that nothing is lost in translation and every little sign of discomfort is taken instantly
h = hair [ how well groomed are they, does the carpet match the drapes, etc ]
erin tends to switch between how she keeps her hair groomed down there -- usually it comes down to whether she has time to do it or if she truly cares about the state it’s in. sure, she went through a phase during some of her earlier sexual encounters where she felt she needed to be completely hairless. but now, she’s happy enough to keep things trimmed enough to make it look well kept
i = intimacy [ how are they during the moment, romantic aspect… ]
erin can be very romantic both in and outside of the bedroom -- she loves planning things for her partner and giving them all the attention they deserve. when she truly finds someone she loves, then she will constantly pour her heart out with every single bit of love she has
j = jack off [ masturbation headcanon ]
more often than not, erin will take her needs into her own hands and bring herself pleasure. she doesn’t find it taboo or something to be ashamed of -- though there is a small level of embarrassment if she is walked in on, but she’s not going to shy away if her partner opts to stay at her side
k = kink [ one or more of their kinks ]
switch — erin is a switch when it comes to bedroom. she doesn’t have an issue with relinquishing control over to you, or taking it back if she feels that things aren’t quite going the way she’s wanting them to
brat tamer — a very rare thing to take place, but she does like it when you get a little bratty or snippy with her. it gets her going like no other and just wants to put you back into your place. knowing that’s what you want her to do
l = location [ favorite places to do the do ]
prefers to keep all activity confined to either her’s or your housing -- not wanting to be anywhere too public and risk someone walking in on the both of you. however, all locations within said home are fair game for use
m = motivation [ what turns them on, gets them going ]
it doesn’t take a lot to really get erin going, however she’s really good at hiding it. that being said, seeing you in a nice pair of jeans, confidence -- in the since that if you do your hair, makeup, or feel happy to try something new, she’s going to light up
n = no [ something they wouldn’t do, turn offs ]
she’s wouldn’t do anything that would case any sort of harm -- mental or physical, and has to draw lines when things start to get a little real or close to things she does at her job
o = oral [ preference in giving or receiving, skill, etc ]
giving — is more up for giving than receiving. but likes both quite equally. in this scenario, she likes to bring pleasure to her partner. she’s well versed with her mouth, and always taking note of what exactly makes you tick and jump
receiving — erin loves receiving just as much as she enjoys giving, and if you are dead set on reducing her to a pile of mush, then why would she stop you? just getting to feel you love on her is enough, and after all is set and done, she’s quick to swoop in for a kiss
p = pace [ are they fast and rough? slow and sensual? etc. ]
pace is all dependent on the mood the both of you are feeling for the night / day. erin loves a good sweet and gentle love making session, but she’s also not opposed to having her back blown out, or blowing your back out in turn. she likes to take things as they are and is happy to provide either way
q = quickie [ their opinions on quickies rather than proper sex, how often, etc. ]
erin has had a few quickies in her lifetime, and while they were invigorating and enjoyable, she felt they already weren’t quite ‘enough’ and still jumped her previous partners later to finally feel sated. so, they aren’t going to be something she is going to bring up. however, if her partner is into something like that, she’ll be happy to give her partner some pleasure quickly
r = risk [ are they game to experiment, do they take risks, etc. ]
there isn’t a lot of room for risks in erin’s pleasure -- as she always wants to keep it safe. essentially, she’s not going to branch out from the box the the two of you have created for the sake of “changing things up a bit”. instead, she will always ask before anything is ever started to make sure it’s something you both are alright with
s = stamina [ how many rounds can they go for, how long do they last… ]
erin’s usually only good for one round, but she ensures that both of you are coming at least a couple of times before calling it quits for the night. she likes to put all of her pleasure and energy into one good, drawn out round rather than brake it up into multiple rounds. but, she’s not opposed to doing another round a few hours later if that's what her partner wants
t = toy [ do they own toys? do they use them? on a partner or themselves? ]
erin owns a few toys herself, a mix between vibrators and some dildos that she likes to use on herself. and she definitely doesn’t bat an eye if you use some toys yourself and might even ask if you want to incorporate them into the bedroom only if you’re comfortable with something like that
u = unfair [ how much do they like to tease ]
erin can be a tease when she’s in the mood for it. if she’s in the mood to rile you up either in public or in private, she’ll do it and enjoy every second of it. she’ll do this if she’s feeling particularly needy and doesn’t really want to voice it -- rather she wants you to chase after her and follow whatever she’s doing. she does this by leaning herself against ht kitchen counters, purposefully arching her back and presenting herself. or, she’ll pull a nice lacey set from her small, yet impactful drawer of lingerie and strut around the apartment in it
v = volume [ how loud they are, what sound they make ]
erin doesn't say or make a whole lot of sound. i’ve always pictured her at the type who was relatively quiet in bed and tended to hold back from making any noises. nothing specific on why, more so just a feeling. so, you won’t hear much from her during the act
w = wild card [ get a random headcanon for the character of your choice ]
erin, since becoming intimate with you, always tries to wear something cute under her clothes as a added bit of spice. ever heard of that “matching set means they were expecting to have sex that night”? erin starting doing that, but it morphed into where she felt confident wearing them so she just made sure they were still comfortable to wear on the run
x = x-ray [ let’s see what’s going on in those pants, picture or words ]
i feel like this is geared more towards male anatomy, so i’m just going to leave this blank :)
y = yearning [ how high is their sex drive? ]
erin has a medium to low sex drive -- meaning, she’s not opposed to having sex a few times during the week, but often times she’s so weighted with work that she tends to forget all about it. however, it does work out in her favor most of the time, as by the end of her work week, she can’t seem to keep her hands off of you and it leads to many weekends spent in bed
z = zzz [ how quickly they fall asleep afterward ]
erin is always down for some form of pillow talk. she’s typically not one to fall asleep immediately and still finds herself well awake after your couple of rounds in the sheets together. she’ll stay up with you, smiling and holding you close as the two of you talk about anything and everything that comes to mind.
however, that’s not to say she wouldn’t keep you up if she happens to notice that you are tired. if that’s the case, then she’ll just press a soft kiss to your lips and let you roll over to catch a few z’s. and eventually, she’ll follow suit.

Could I please request an Erin Lindsay x reader just general fluff, and the plot; possibly just cuddling and relaxing in bed?
Tumblr media
Erin's arm wrapped around you, tightening her grip around your waist as she scooted closer.
Her body pressing to your side.
Her head resting on your boob. While you gently run your fingers through her hair. The TV playing softly in the back.
Erin’s eyes softly fluttered closed. She opened them quickly, trying to focus on the TV, but failed miserably.
You tightened your arms around her. kissing the top of her head.
“Go to sleep, bub,” You spoke softly. Kissing the top of her head.
Erin let out a whine. Opening her eyes and looking up at you through sleepy eyes.
“I’m not tired,” She mumbled. Making you smile down at her.
You leaned down to kiss her forehead.
“Yeah, you are, I will be right here when you wake up,” You spoke softly.
Leaning down to kiss her lips softly. Erin's eyes fluttered closed. She let out a sigh.
Making you smile. You pulled your lips away from hers. Pulling her closer to you. she snuggled into you drifting off to sleep.
“Goodnight bub,” You cooed. Kissing the top of her head. Then stroking your hand up and down her arm….

Just imagining halstead sister having a baby and jay and will spoiling them also fighting on who’s the better uncle and jay getting emotional when she names him and hailey the godparents
Not totally what you requested, but here's a little bit of Uncle Jay and Uncle Will for you!
We see Uncle Jay and Uncle Will today, too?” your four-year-old daughter, Emmy, asked excitedly as you walked hand-in-hand into the fair.
“Yup. They said they’d be by the–”
“Uncle Jay! Uncle Will!” she exclaimed as she saw them standing by the ticket booth and quickly let go of your hand to run to them.
“Emmy! What did we talk about in the car? You have to stay with Mommy.”
At that moment, she crashed into Jay’s open arms and he picked her up and quickly put her on his shoulders.
“But it’s just Uncle Jay and Uncle Will!” she protested.
“Yeah, Y/N. It’s just Uncle Jay and Uncle Will,” Jay parroted.
“Shut it,” you told him.
“Now, now, Y/N. Be nice,” Will told you.
“I would swear at you, but my daughter’s here, so I’ll refrain from that."
“Good choice,” Jay said and you just rolled your eyes at him. He turned his head up to look at Emmy who was still sitting atop his shoulders. “Where to first, Munchkin?”
“Rides! The spinny apple one!”
“Pukefest for Y/N it is,” Will chuckled. “How much do we have to pay you to get on one after last time?”
“Nothing because I won’t be going on it. And, my motion sickness has gotten much worse since I was a teenager, so Mommy will not be going on spinny rides today.”
“But why not, Mommy?” your daughter pouted.
“Because, sometimes when things spin really fast, Mommy gets sick. Remember how you felt when you had to miss school one day?” She nodded. “That’s how Mommy feels when she has to go on spinny rides.”
“And that’s why Daddy always goes on them with me?”
Your husband—and Emmy’s dad—was a professional hockey player currently playing in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Unfortunately for you and Emmy, this meant not seeing him a lot. Despite seeing him a lot during the regular season whenever he played home games in Chicago, you knew with travel and games every other day and how high the stakes were, that you wouldn’t see your husband in person until him and his team either were eliminated in one of the first three rounds, or the playoffs came to an end of the team made it to the finals in late June.
“That’s exactly why. Good job!” you praised.
“But can Uncle Will and Uncle Jay ride the rides with me?”
“Of course, we will!” Will told your little girl excitedly. “And we’ll go super duper fast!”
***
“I think Miss Emmy here is having a bit of a sugar crash,” Will said as Emmy yawned once again and laid her head against his chest because he was currently carrying her on his hip.
“Was it the cotton candy from you?” you asked and pointed to Jay. “Or was it the ice cream from you?” You turned and pointed to Will.
“I plead the fifth,” Jay said quickly and put his hands up in surrender.
“Me, too,” Will added quickly.
“Well then, we’ll be watching enough hockey and movies until she wakes up in the middle of the night, and then you two can deal with her. You know since it’s only 6:00 that she’s not going to sleep through the night if she falls asleep now, right?”
They both groaned, but they agreed.
***
After you gave Emmy a much-needed bath and Will and Jay read her a bedtime story, you and your brothers were having some much-needed relaxing time—without your daughter interfering. You guys were currently watching hockey and had been for about two hours when you heard little footsteps and quiet sniffles.
You quickly shoved your hard seltzer into Jay’s hand and got up to go to your little girl.
“Sweetie, what’s the matter?” you asked as you picked her up. She held tight to you with one arm and clutched her blanket in the other.
“You- You watchin’ Daddy with-without me!” she cried and buried her face in your neck.
“You were sleeping, sweetie. We didn’t want to wake you up.”
“But- But I wanna watch Daddy play!” she cried.
“Let her stay, Y/N. She’ll conk out by the end of the period anyway,” Will suggested.
“Will!” you hissed.
“C’mon. You know she’ll be the good luck charm, too. And how can we the fun uncles if we don’t let her stay up late?” Jay asked.
“Yeah, how can we be the funcles?” Will asked.
“What’s a fuckle?” Emmy asked quickly.
Jay choked on his drink and Will’s eyes widened, realizing what he had just done.
“Uncle Will was being silly and said the wrong word, baby,” you said quickly. “He meant to say fun uncle. He’s your uncle and you always have fun like watching movies and going to the fair with him.”
“Oh.”
“You can stay up and watch Daddy play,” you gave in.
“Yay!” Emmy cheered.
You quickly set her down between Jay and Will and took your hard seltzer back from Jay. Needless to say, when you went into the kitchen to grab Emmy a juice box, you chugged the rest of that sucker.
You hoped she’d never say fuckle again.
But hey, she was half Halstead, so she probably would. And this was all thanks to her uncles. You knew they loved Emmy, but sometimes they needed to shut up.
“Mommy! Goal! Mommy! They score!” Emmy yelled.
And so, you quickly ran out of the kitchen to continue watching the game with Emmy and your brothers.
And despite the fact that your brothers spoiled Emmy rotten, you knew she could have no better a combination of role models between her dad and her uncles.

nsfw alphabet [connor rhodes]
Chicago Med / One Chicago
Connor Rhodes x GN!Reader
1.4k words
Tumblr media
a - aftercare (what they’re like after sex)
after sex, Connor turns into a stage 5 clinger. once you’re finished you’re basically attached at the hip for the rest of the night. all he wants to do is make sure you feel okay and that you enjoyed it. he basically waits on you hand and foot.
b - body part (their favorite body part of theirs and of yours)
theirs - hands. his favorite part of his own body is definitely his hands. he’s a surgeon, he’s obviously good with his hands. he knows exactly how to touch you to get you going and he’s clearly proud of it.
yours - your arms. he loves when you wrap your arms around his waist, or wrap them around his neck when he’s on top of you.
c - cum (anything to do with cum basically… i’m a disgusting person)
Connor loves to pull out and cum on your stomach. he loves that he has an unobscured view of your entire body. he’s not much into cumming on your face, he feels it’s degrading and he is all about worshipping you.
d - dirty secret (self explanatory)
submission and exhibitionism. he’s thought about getting on his knees for you in an on-call room countless times. someone walking in on you with your hands in his hair, fucking his face. word getting around the hospital that the Connor Rhodes is such a good boy for you.
e - experience
Connor has been with his fair share of partners. Not too many, but he’s definitely learned how to be good in bed. All of them have been pretty vanilla, so you’re the first who has let him explore his kinkier side and he could not be more thrilled.
f - favorite position
missionary - he loves to see your face when he’s fucking you. being able to kiss you is pretty much his main requirement for whether or not he enjoys a position.
riding - he absolutely loves when you’re on top. he can keep his hands on your waist, and he is all about you being in control of him.
g - goofy (are they more serious in the moment, or are they humorous)
he knows it’s impolite to talk with his mouth full, no matter what’s in it.
h - hair (are they well groomed? does the carpet match the drapes?)
he keeps it trimmed downstairs. not clean shaven but he definitely doesn’t have a bush. the carpet definitely matches the drapes.
i - intimacy
Connor absolutely worships you. he is the most romantic man you have ever met, and it definitely carries over into the bedroom. all he ever wants to do is make you feel good and make you feel like you’re beautiful.
j- jack off (masturbation)
Connor gets his fair share of solo time whenever you work different shifts, but he always has a picture or video of you to keep him company.
k - kink
Connor most definitely has several kinks.
he is 1000% a service sub. he wants nothing more than to make you cum, and he can only get off if he’s already made you at least once. connor absolutely loves when you sit on his face, he’s ecstatic when you’re in control of the pleasure he’s giving you. praise is a must. whether it’s directed at him or at you (usually both), praise is something absolutely necessary in your sex life. tell him he’s being a good boy and he will rail you into the mattress.
l - location
connor is willing to take you anywhere he can. he prefers when it’s somewhere that he can hear you moan, but if you’re on call he’s perfectly fine with kissing you to shut you up. if you’re at home he’ll draw it out for as long as he can. at work, he doesn’t care if he cums. it’s all about you if he has to go fast.
m - motivation (what turns him on)
sharing clothes. if he sees you in one of his shirts, you might as well kiss the rest of your day goodbye.
hickeys/marks. connor absolutely loves when you leave marks on him. when he catches a glimpse of them in the shower or while he’s changing he always accidentally lets a whine slip from his mouth.
hair pulling. he’s a bit of a masochist, he loves when you run your fingers through his hair and unexpectedly pull his head backwards so he’ll look you in the eye. how you tangle your fingers in it when he’s on his knees for you.
n - no (something they wouldn’t do)
he would never do anything that could hurt you in any way. he’d hate to be the reason you felt any kind of pain at all.
o - oral
connor most definitely prefer giving rather than receiving. he won’t turn you down if you offer, but he’d much rather be on his knees or have you on his face. he could give you head all day long. he doesn’t care if he’s on call or if his jaw is sore. he absolutely loves having his face fucked. he wants you to use him for your pleasure.
p - pace
connor will give it to you however you want it. if you just got off a long shift and you’re both tired, he’ll take it slow and gently rut into you until you finish. if you’ve had a particularly bad day then he’ll fuck you into the mattress and make sure you remember how good he was for you when you can barely walk the next day.
q - quickie
he’s always down for a quickie. whether you’re riding him in an on-call room during your shift, or he’s fucking you against the wall in the bathroom of a charity event. he’ll always make time to make you feel good.
r - risk
connor is definitely an exhibitionist. he’s a little too willing to risk getting caught by one of your coworkers or neighbors. you’ve been walked in on many times in pretty much every supply closet or on-call room of the hospital. all he does is keep going. half the hospital knows that he’ll do anything to please you.
s - stamina
he can go for quite a while before he gets tired. you usually get at least two rounds in before he’s spent. even then, if you’re still in the mood, he’ll let you use him to get off as much as you want.
t - toys
connor doesn’t personally own any toys, but he will happily let you use them on him if that’s what you want. he’s quite fond of when you make him wear a plug for most of his shift, secretly hoping someone notices him rocking back on his chair when he sits down for lunch with you.
u - unfair
connor isn’t much of a brat, he’d much rather be pleasing you than being punished. he does very much enjoy it when you tease him in public. tracing your finger along the outline of his dick when you’re at dinner. hands ghosting over his throat when you end up alone in the doctors lounge. he loves when you make him so needy for you.
v - volume
he is definitely not quiet in the bedroom. he loves making noises for you, showing how good you’re making him feel. he loves giving you an ego boost by whining in your ear when you’re riding him.
w - wildcard (random headcannon)
connor absolutely loves being manhandled. he’s a pretty large guy, so when you make him feel small he’ll immediately do anything you want. he loves when you pin him against a wall, or grab him by the throat. hold his hair while you fuck his mouth and he’ll melt.
x - x-ray
above average, probably about 6.5 - 7 inches.
y - yearning
his sex drive is pretty high, mostly because if you’re in the mood then he’s most definitely in the mood. he’s down to take you (or let you take him) pretty much any time of day or night.
z - zzz
connor won’t fall asleep until he’s made sure you’re okay. he may be the sub in the bedroom, but once sex is over he does everything he can to take care of you. once he’s made sure you’re okay, he wraps you in his arms and absolutely passes out.

Calex Headcanon
Y’know what I find really disappointing, Erin Lindsey never got the chance to meet Alex Cabot or Casey Novak.
I feel very strongly about the fact that if they had Alex and Casey would have 100% adopted her.
They’d be like look at this adorable detective (who has Elliot’s anger issues and Liv’s compassion) who’s also got a shit ton of trauma. We are definitely adopting her.
They wouldn’t have even had to talk about it because they’d both just know, she’s just a baby and she needs to be protected.
And God forbid anyone raise their voice or upset her Alex and Casey would go for their throats.
(I think the writers were just cowards because they know if you put three women with voice to die for together they’d be to powerful.)

Can you tell the people about Jay’s speech impediment(s) so I can reblog it? I love you 💜
Hi! Thanks for asking! I absolutely don't have any basis for this beyond me looking at Jay and going, hold this! Anyway, Jay absolutely has a speech impediment.
Growing up, Jay absolutely had a speech impediment. He has at the very least a lisp and probably some other articulation errors. For me, it was Rs being pronounced as Ws (wascally wabbit kinda shit) but I think Jay absolutely had more omissions of sounds rather than substitutions. So, (you'll see this is 100 fast too) instead of saying "green snake", Jay would have said "geen nake". (Theo says peed instead of speed often because she omits the S sound at the start of words). I also have the tiny headcanon that their mom had a pretty heavy lisp, too, just because not enough characters have impediments.
In turn, because Jay wasn't able to speak correctly, he absolutely had to attend speech therapy, and he was Not a Fan because his was not fun like mine was, or like Theo's is. Instead, he was forced to sit and repeat tongue twisters for a few hours each week, and for a young boy with ADHD, it was a struggle. The nuns at his catholic school were mean, too, to the point that he couldn't just relax during the sessions. He was miserable, and he learned that speaking incorrectly was a Negative Thing, so if he gets sleepy or drunk, and he's not thinking about keeping his tongue behind his teeth or pronouncing every letter where it should go, he gets quieter because he has that negative association with his impediment.
(In Theo-verse, Will knows this, too, and Theo absolutely gets a fun speech therapist, one who gives her games to play and prizes to take home, who makes it a fun and exciting thing to do rather than the traumatizing experience Jay went through)
But, yeah, I think a pretty boy like Jay can have a speech impediment, as a treat to me :)

Mousestead, "I'm incapable of love."
I saw an opportunity to write demi-romantic!Mouse so I'm doing it, with some platonic Moustead. also it's an AU where he got to be at the Upstead wedding because it's what I, personally, deserved. also I don't know how to stop at five sentences.
"I'm incapable of love."
Jay rolled his eyes at the comment and the smirk that came with it. All he'd asked was when he would get to return the favor from the month before, get to be the best man at a wedding - since Adam certainly wasn't going to ask him, not with Kevin as an option, and he still had to actually ask the question before that kind of decision could be made.
His only hope to put on a suit without all of the pressure of an eternal vow was the person who had been his own best man, who had stood next to him while he promised himself to Hailey for the rest of their joint lives. Maybe he should have expected the cheeky response, the unnecessary reminder that Mouse had never had a relationship, let alone one serious enough to warrant the sound of wedding bells. He'd always been all too happy to be casual, wearing shirts that didn't belong to him around the district, going out to clubs and listening to loud music while hitting on the first attractive man he saw. Even at his bachelor party, Jay had watched while Mouse bought a drink for a guy at the next table over, making those eyes that got him anything and everything he wanted.
But that had to stop sometime, right? He couldn't just have casual hookups forever.
"You are not incapable of love." It had taken a moment for him to find the right words, the bottle of beer in his hand less refreshingly cold than it had been when he first took it out of the fridge. "You just refuse to consider taking something more seriously than a night of sex. You wore that same shirt yesterday, by the way."
Mouse rolled his eyes and took a drink from his own bottle, suddenly avoiding eye contact. Discussing his extended slut phase had never been off limits before. He'd always seemed to feed into the jokes, or make them himself, and his laughter about it was always genuine. But something had shifted in the air between them, like they weren't joking about it anymore. And that was fine - he just needed to know what the new tone of the conversation was.
"Yeah... maybe it is something like that..."
Jay bit his tongue and tried to be patient, letting the quiet hang between them. Maybe, if he waited, Mouse would open up about his thoughts on his own. But almost a whole minute passed, and it was clear that wasn't going to happen. So, with his voice gentle and low, he risked prompting for more instead. "Or...?"
"Or... what if I am incapable of love? I mean..." It worked, at least, inspiring Mouse to actually share his thoughts, even if they were a bit jumbled. "Not entirely incapable, because I do love things. I love my job, and my life, and where I've ended up. And I love my friendship with you. But the romantic, sappy shit, like what you and Hailey have? It's been a long time since I thought I'd have anything like that. It's..."
"Not feeling something right now doesn't mean you're never gonna feel it-"
"I know." Mouse wasn't making eye contact, but his smile was small, and soft, and genuine. That was enough. "I'm not saying never. Someone could come along and surprise me. But I... I figured some stuff out? When I was in Atlanta last year? Like... I'm happy, you know? Doing my casual thing, not making any commitments, just going with the flow. I like it. Anything more than that... it's not me. There's a difference - sexual attraction, romantic attraction, they're not the same thing. I'm very gay, still, I'm not taking that back or anything. But..."
Jay shook his head and shifted in his seat, getting comfortable and making sure he looked it on the outside, too. They hadn't had a conversation, about that label, not one that either of them were happy with. It had been sprung on him with no warning in the middle of brunch, an embarrassing scene that they had to try to ignore while their friendship only got stronger. And it wasn't like Jay had ever felt the need to declare his realization when it wasn't relevant, and his own makeshift coming out had been through a bad pun he hadn't been able to resist. Actually getting to talk about things, on their own terms, that was practically brand new. He wanted to appreciate it for all the times he didn't get to.
"Another label. Are you collecting them, or something? Are you going to trade them in for a prize later?" He sipped from his beer with a smile - not a smirk, even if it would match the tone of his teasing, because that wasn't what he wanted. This was supposed to be a good moment, not a taunting one. "Alright, hit me. What am I going to pretend to understand and then go google as soon as you leave?"
He got a scoff in return, and a laugh that made him feel warm. That sound was absent from brunch, and far too long afterwards, and it was a nice change. "Yeah, okay. You know what asexuality is, right?"
"I do remember that one in my research, yes."
"Right, so... it's kind of like that? But with romantic attraction. It's called aromantic."
"And that's what you are? That's the new label?"
"Not exactly." They were both quiet long enough to take another drink, comfortable in it. They could always be comfortable in each other's quiet, and sometimes the heavier conversations needed it. This one did, even if it was brief. "Aromantic is kind of its own umbrella. Lots of things fall under it. Like how gay means gay, and bi, and every other thing you can think of? I'm... somewhere under that umbrella, leaning more in one direction than others."
"So, what am I googling when you go home later?"
Mouse sighed, but it was fond, and his smile was bigger. He didn't have to say it, that he appreciated how light the conversation still was after the first time, after they didn't get to be light and silly or say things on their own schedule. It was different in the best way, even if it took a decade to get there.
"Demiromantic. I'll text it to you so you know how to spell it."
"Doesn't seem too difficult."
"That's your third beer."
"What's your point?"
"I'll just text it to your wife."
[ send me a ship + 1 sentence and I'll write the next 5 ]

I've been binge-watching the One Chicago shows recently and since there's no confirmed age for the Halstead brothers (that I can find) I have this little headcanon
Jay and Will Halstead are fraternal twins and y'all can rip this from my cold, dead hands, okay.
i can't find any confirmed ages for the two, when Will was introduced in PD he was the younger brother but at some point after Med started they switched it and now Will is older than Jay. the two actors are close enough in age that I'm very willing to say that they're twins and it just hasn't come up at all.

Will Halstead Headcanons
Tumblr media Tumblr media
middle name is patrick, after his dad: I have no doubt in my mind that pat halstead was the type of man that was ‘carry on the family namesake / legacy’ orientated. He’d 100% give his oldest son his name either first or middle and ofc this time it was middle.
Favorite color is blue: I don’t really… have a reason? I just for some reason see him being a like, navy blue lover
He has his mother’s eyes: this one could technically be canon. Jay and their father have the same eyes so it’s reasonable to think that their mother would have brown eyes like will. (Idrk how genetics work but yk, he got red hair which is recessive and jay got green eyes so)
He. Is. Sappy. And i mean like, saying the cheesiest thing in conversations. Constantly complimenting you. Everything. He is a nerd and he just loves love.
Lover stan. That is his fav Taylor Swift album. it ties into him being sappy and he just loves the album. his favorite song off of it is daylight though. (his favorite in general is ivy but thats more so my fanfic canon idk about ‘realistically’)
he’d be a superman kid. like, idolized superman as a kid because he helped people and stuff.
Allergic to bees, again. No real reason just… in my mind

When we fall | Part 1
Warnings (for all parts): Fluff, angst!!, description of injuries, blood, violence, use of guns, mentions of death, probably unaccurate policing/medicine
Summary: You moved to Chicago to start a new life. Working as a doctor alongside your brother Connor you make new friends and although you swore to yourself not to let any man in your life at least for a while, your promises fail when you lock eyes with a handsome stranger in a bar.
Words: 6k
Pairing: Jay Halstead x Doctor!Rhodes!reader
A/N: I just started watching Chicago PD (I'm on season 3 now) after I've been watching Fire and Med for years now. I just can't stand Voight so I only began watching for Jay and Burzek! And I am so in love with Jay. Please, this man is perfect. Just look at that handsome face!!
This is going to be a 3 part series I wrote on a whim. Originally I only planned on writing one scene, but then I figured it needed a backstory so this happened...
I have to say I am really proud how it turned out. I was just in such a flow when I wrote it that the story basically wrote itsself. I hope you enjoy and that the characters feel true to themselves :)
Tumblr media
You had only began working at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center a few months ago, hesitant to work alongside your brother but knowing it was an opportunity, which would be stupid not to take.
Having moved to Chicago recently to be close with your brother after a messy break-up, you were still adjusting to your new life.
It was why you were more than relieved when you got along well with your co-workers, especially Natalie and her boyfriend Will.
They were understanding of your situation, were never bothered to show you where to find something at the hospital and made you feel welcome from the beginning as they invited you in on their group plans and joked like you were old friends.
Although you still felt a little uncertain at times to work with your brother, who had made himself a name as a brilliant trauma and cardiothoracic surgeon, he had been supportive since your decision to leave your old town behind and start a new life in Chicago.
Maybe, you thought, coming here had been exactly what you needed. A fresh start, a new beginning with new friends and no men to mess with your heart. At least for now.
“I told you I have sworn off men”, you sighed, shaking your head in amusement at Natalie’s try to play matchmaker. “They’re trouble. I don’t need that in my life right now.”
“Hey!” Will send you a look, though you knew he wasn’t mad. “She’s not wrong though”, April stated and Ethan next to her grinned. “I mean it though”, you said directed at Natalie. “I just want to focus on myself right now. My job. No dating for now.”
Everyone at the table nodded and you relaxed, glad you had found these people, who respected and supported you. “Cheers to that!” April raised her glass and you did the same when you noticed yours was empty.
With a groan you pushed yourself out of your seat and up, gesturing towards the bar. “I’m going to get another drink. Anyone want something?” They all shook their heads, already moving onto another topic.
As you made your way over to the counter you studied the people around you, trying to determine who was a cop, a firefighter and who a regular. Right in the beginning the others had introduced you to Mollys, claiming it was Chicago’s bar where first responders spend their time after shift.
Figuring it might come in handy to memorize some faces you let your gaze drift over the sea of people, recognizing a few men that Connor had once told you worked at the CFD. They were laughing loudly, beers in hand as they seemed to be talking enthusiastically about something.
At the table next to theirs your gaze came to a hold, your eyes caught by a man you had never seen before but looked slightly familiar. Your brows furrowed as you rummaged in your head for something that connected you to him, but you couldn’t find anything.
The people who sat with him didn’t look familiar either, consisting of men and one woman with chestnut hair. Your eyes drifted back to the man, who had caught your attention, his brown hair styled neatly and his hands wrapped around a bottle of beer that he just raised to his lips.
You didn’t meant to stare, but you were mesmerized, torn between trying to determine why he looked so familiar and captured by his effortless handsomeness.
He wore a green shirt, making you think his eyes were the same shade, although it was hard to know with the distance between you.
He seemed relaxed, leant back in his seat but listening to the others conversation attentively. Having sensed someone’s eyes on him he suddenly looked up, his eyes searching the room for a split second before they fell onto you.
Your face heat up as a blush crept up your cheeks, knowing you had missed your chance to turn away. The man raised his brows slightly, in confusion just as much as amusement it seemed, before he lightly lifted his bottle, as if he was saying cheers.
You clutched your glass a little tighter, glad that it had been refilled in the time you had spent gawking at him, and copied the movement, an unstable smile on your lips. Then you turned away, meeting Stella’s gaze from the other side of the bar.
The two of you had met when she had been at the hospital for smoke inhaling a while ago and you had clicked almost instantly, connected by your determination to hold your own in a field still dominated by men. And by your past with toxic relationships as you found out later.
“What was that?”, she asked, a teasing grin tugging at the corner of her lips as her eyes flickered between you and the man behind you. A part of you wanted to ask if he was still watching you, the other longed to forget it had ever happened.
“I don’t know.” You let out a dramatic sigh. “Can we just forget it ever happened?”
Stella’s face lit up, her curls dancing around her face as she shook her head. “Yeah, you wish. But that was definitely something.”
You exhaled, pinching your nose. “Thank you for the drink.” You saw Stella open her mouth in protest at your ignoration of her words, but before she could say anything else you send her an apologetical smile and hurried off.
No one seemed to have noticed your encounter and you slipped into the booth with ease, trying hard not to steal another glance at the unknown man a few tables away.
No men, you reminded yourself. Right now you needed to focus on getting your life together, not getting your heart broken by a handsome stranger.
-
“Dr. (Y/l/n)?” “Yeah?”, your head shot up from where you had filled out paper work. Because Connor and you were only half-sibling, you didn’t share the same last name, something you had been more than glad over when stepping foot in this hospital for the first time.
No one knew where you came from and that you shared genes with the successful Dr. Rhodes and you had left it at that at first, wanting to make your own impression first before dropping the information.
You could still remember their shocked faces, the questions, but most of all the excitement as they asked what Connor had been like growing up. If you had any embarrassing stories to tell or photos to show.
You didn’t, keeping them to yourself for now, because you hadn’t come here to make fun of your brother. He had been your rock through your breakup and your move here, something you were so grateful for you feared you would never be able to show him just how much.
“We have someone hit bit a bullet waiting in the three.” Your eyes widened. “Why didn’t they come with an ambulance?”, you asked, grabbing your iPad along the way.
Maggie waved off your comment, chuckling. “Cops. You know how they are.”
Actually, you didn’t. Coming from a small town you had no experience with shootings and gangs and many of the other trauma causes that were common here in Chicago. It was why you had been so excited about your job offer at the hospital.
Although you were still adjusting to the changes of living in a city and there were downsides you hadn’t considered before, you liked it. It felt so different, giving you the sense that in this city everything could be possible.
So many options and so many possibilities, as if you could completely reinvent yourself. It was thrilling, making you wonder how you had ever lived without the adrenaline rush of stepping into a busy ER.
Quickly scanning the information on your tablet you pulled open the curtain, clamping the iPad under your arm as you disinfected your hands.
“Hi, I’m doctor (y/l/n) and you are?” You glanced up, startled as you met the eyes of a familiar stranger. The man in front of you grinned, seemingly better at covering up his surprise. “Shouldn’t it say my name on your tablet?”
He didn’t sound rude, only a little sarcastic and perhaps even teasing. You gulped, trying to recompose yourself. “Right. I just prefer getting to know my patients myself than just relying on numbers and letters.”
You didn’t see his reaction when you grabbed your iPad again, glancing down at it. “So your name is Jay Hal-” “Halstead”, he finished for you and you looked up at him again.
It made sense now, why he had seemed so familiar to you nights ago at Mollys. “You’re Will’s brother.” The man in front of you, Jay, as you knew now, raised a brow. “Have you considered becoming a detective?”
He was mocking you, again, and you were tempted to smack him with your iPad. “So-”, he paused, letting his eyes drift over you. You felt your body tense under his gaze, cop’s eyes, and stood a little straighter.
“You were watching me at Mollys.”
You pressed your lips into a thin line, biting your tongue. You could only hope the embarrassment that began to sink in didn’t show.
“I was not watching you”, you stated and he raised a brow, daring you to explain yourself. “I just thought you looked familiar, but I couldn’t figure out why. Now it makes sense.”
You turned halfway towards the door, gesturing to the halls where somewhere his brother was treating another patient.
“I don’t think that’s the whole truth.”
You almost gasped at the confidence in his voice, instead blowing out a breath. “It definitely was.”
He shook his head, smiling. “I don’t buy it.”
There were many things you wanted to say to him, but you swallowed them, knowing it was no use. He clearly enjoyed teasing you, so you wouldn’t give him more fuel.
Instead you let out a sigh, shifting into professionality. “So, Mr. Halstead”, you began. “Jay is fine.” You tried not to let his interruption let you lose your string again and nodded. “Jay, you’re here for a bullet wound on your left upper arm?”
Jay nodded, his eyes- they really were green- bright. Pulling on your gloves you decided it was time to reclaim your own position a little. “And you decided to just walk in here instead of coming with an ambulance? Seems a little reckless, don’t you think?”
He raised one brow at your question. “It’s just a graze. I wouldn’t even be here if it weren’t for my boss.” He rolled his eyes, making you wonder what his boss was like.
“Seems like your boss is a lot smarter than you”, you muttered, but to your surprise Jay grinned. “You’re new here, right? At least I’ve never seen you here before. Do you always talk to patients like that?”
You shrugged, unbothered by his words as you stepped close to him to take a look at his arm. You didn’t know what had gotten into you to talk to him like that, but you had the feeling with him it was fine. That he could take it, perhaps even enjoyed it over your dry professionalism.
“Only to the ones I like best”, you said with sarcasm in your voice, too focused on inspecting his wound to check his expression.
Jay didn’t move under your touch, allowing you to move his arm before you let it go again. He had done this before, probably multiple times. It was why he was so unbothered, perhaps even annoyed to waste his time here on something that seemed unsignificant to him.
For a moment you were tempted to ask him how he could choose a job that demanded such sacrifice, but you didn’t know him and you doubted he would give you an honest answer. Not that you could blame him. You were practically strangers.
And was your job much different? Although you had never been hurt and doubted it would ever happen, you were still making countless of sacrifices for it. Taking on extra shifts, working through the nights, staying longer to take more time for your patients and putting their health over your own sometimes.
“It’s just a graze shot”, you said when you were done inspecting the wound, ignoring his look that seemed to say “told you”.
“But you still need to be careful with it. Give it rest, avoid any rapid movements, don’t lift too heavy with it…I think you know.”
Jay nodded, watching you remove your gloves. “Does that happen often?” He tilted his head in question and you bit your lip. “I mean, you- getting shot on the job.”
“Are you asking if I come here often?” His lips were curled into a lopsided grin, looking way too handsome on his features. You rolled your eyes at his teasing, ignoring the way your heart beat a little faster in your chest. “Forget it”, you stated, throwing your gloves into the bin.
“I am going to tell one of the residents to come and bandage the wound. Then you’re free to go.”
But before you could move the curtain again and leave the room you heard Jay’s voice behind you. “Wait.”
You paused, turning back to him slowly. For the first time he wore a serious expression, his jaw twitching.
“I’m with the Intelligence”, he stated, in a way that told you the name should ring a bell. It didn’t. You were too new to know much about it.
Jay seemed to sense it by your lack of a reaction to his words. “We’re…very involved in the City.”
Whatever that meant. You tilted your head in question. “You mean with the gangs?”
Jay shifted. “Voight, my boss, he can be very- intense.”
You nodded slowly, taking in his guarded expression. It was a topic you wouldn’t pry at. “And you’re okay with it? I mean- you’re just so…casual about this.”
You bit your lip, hesitant to ask him but curious as well. The cops in your home town had barely ever used their weapon to the point you sometimes even doubted they were able to.
Jay shrugged nonchalantly. “Before I worked for the CPD I was in the army. I’ve been through a lot worse than a graze. Getting shot at is just another part of my job.”
A veteran.
In such a short amount of time Jay had revealed so much to you. Suddenly you had a lot more respect for the man in front of you and you wondered if that was his way of coping, covering up his battle wounds and scars with sarcasm and wit.
You swallowed, trying to find words. But none seemed fitting. “Sounds like I will be seeing you here often then.” You kept your voice emotionless, although the thought of seeing Jay regularly made your heart speed up a little. Of course you would prefer different circumstances.
Damn his handsome face and wit.
He grinned slightly, shifting the atmosphere back to something lighter. “Don’t get too excited. I prefer staying bullet free.” “As you should.”
Typing something into your iPad you gave Jay a final nod. “Stay safe out there.” Then you turned to the door, already halfway out when you heard his voice again.
“I don’t even know your name.”
You froze, smiling to yourself when you tried not to put too much weight into the fact that he had called you back a second time. It seemed almost as if he didn’t want you to leave just yet.
But you pushed the thought aside, knowing it was pointless. You couldn’t let yourself get distracted so easily.
Turning back to him you put on a polite smile.
“You’re a detective, figure it out.”
You were surprised by your own confidence, but with Jay you didn’t feel shy or insecure. He made you feel like you could say anything and he wouldn’t mind. The type of man that didn’t get upset easily, so comfortable with who he was that it took a lot to get him to lose his temper.
“I could just ask my brother, you know.”
You shrugged, unimpressed. “If that lets you sleep at night, sure.”
You left the room smiling to yourself and it took you another few minutes to calm your rapid heart and collect yourself.
-
“You didn’t tell me you have a brother!” “What?” Will looked up from the computer, startled by the way you had barged into the break room.
Your shift was over and you couldn’t wait to get home and relax on the couch, but before that you needed to talk to Will. Because after encountering the other Halstead your mind hadn’t been able to let go of what had happened between the two of you. The way he had looked at you, teased you. How he had made you feel nervous and confident in just a matter of moments.
“Why didn’t you tell me you have a brother?” You leaned on the desk, sure that you had Will’s full attention now. “You didn’t tell us you had a brother the first few weeks either.”
“That’s different.” You shook your head. “And I did tell you. So…?”
Will leaned back in his chair, stretching his back. “I didn’t think it mattered. I would have introduced you eventually but- wait, is Jay here?”
You bit your tongue, feeling a little caught. You hadn’t thought that maybe Jay didn’t want his brother to know what had happened. But it was too late now, and anyway, how should you have known?“
"He was. He is fine though.” You kept your words vague, aware that you weren’t allowed to share personal information with Will. Even if they were brothers.
Will let out a sigh. “That idiot. Probably got himself in trouble again.” He reached for his phone across the desk and you quickly got up, straightening.
“You didn’t get it from me”, you threw in before Will could drag you into it and he looked up at you with curiosity in his eyes. “I wasn’t going to mention you.”
“Oh.” You nodded, feeling relieved yet a little flustered. Will studied you with attentive eyes, reminding you of his brother for a second before his expression shifted into suspicion.
“So you met Jay.” He said it in a way that proposed something meaningful behind his words, but you couldn’t figure out why. “I did.” You shifted your weight to the balls of your feet before swaying forward again. A nervous habit. “I bet he’s the younger one.”
“He is, yeah.”
You suppressed a grin. It made so much sense. “So I should probably head home now. I got the early shift tomorrow.”
“Right.” Will nodded, the phone in his hands seemingly forgotten as his eyes were still fixed on you. “Did something happen between you and my brother?”
Your heart sank a little. Were you really so obvious? “I told you I’ve sworn off men. And your brother is- annoying.”
You wished the last part didn’t sound like it came straight from a five year old’s mouth, but it was too late to take back.
“Trust me, I know that.” Will let out a sigh, but you could see the fondness in his eyes. The gesture alone told you they had a close relationship.
A cop and a doctor. What a pair.
“Well, I’ll see you tomorrow. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”
-
Weeks had passed since you had last seen Jay. He hadn’t shown up in the hospital again, which you were both glad for and disappointed at, and since you had been taking on extra shifts for a sick co-worker, you had spent almost all your time at the hospital or passed out in your bed.
“You haven’t gone out with us in weeks!” Sylvie was currently trying to convince you to come to Mollys. You had gotten to know her through Stella and the two of you had gotten along well, her sweet and kind nature something that made you feel comfortable around her instantly.
Although you had quickly learned not to underestimate the girl. She was working with a bunch of guys after all and had learned to stand her ground with them.
Sylvie could be very persistent, you realized again when she had called you to invite you to a girl’s night out. “Stella won’t be working today, so it’s our chance to spend the night as just us girls.”
You gnawed your lip, thinking. You were tired, craving your couch and tv more than going out again, but Sylvie wasn’t wrong, you had been mostly on your own the past days. Being a little social and getting out of your own apartment would probably be good.
“Urgh, fine”, you groaned. “But you’re paying my first drink.” You knew Sylvie was smiling triumphantly on the other end of the line. “Deal.” “Now get your ass over here!” It was Stella’s voice in the background and you chuckled. “You are the worst!”
“And you love us anyway”, she chirped and you hung up, shaking your head with a smile on your face.
You hadn’t thought about impressing anyone when getting ready, but you were more than glad you had put a little effort into your outfit and make-up when you stepped into Molly’s that night, your getup like a wall build around you.
“You came!” Stella crossed the room, her voice loud enough for a couple of heads to turn towards you. You could kill her for drawing attention to you, but you forced a smile onto your lips instead, trying not to look at anyone except her.
“Hey”, you muttered, shrugging out of your coat and hugging her. “Wow, girl you look stunning!” Stella’s eyes flashed up and down your body as she let go, a smirk on her face.
“A little quieter, please?”, you almost whispered, aware that you still had the attention of the people around you. Stella seemed either completely oblivious to it all or unbothered, because she grinned at you. “Looking like that you will draw attention to you whether you like it or not!”
You felt your cheeks heat up a little, glad when you spied Sylvie making her way over. “I told her not to make a scene, but she wouldn’t listen. You know how she is!”
You hugged her too, smiling as Stella let out a breath. “I did not make a scene. And I’m standing right here, you know?”
Laughing, the three of you made your way to the back, where you slipped into a booth, your drink already waiting for you. “You know me so well”, you told Stella as you took your first sip, relaxing a little now that the attention had mostly vanished.
“I got you, girl!” Stella winked at you, before launching into a story about their newest rescue. Soon you were enveloped in laughter and smiles, the stress of the last days forgotten for the night.
Only when Stella declared it was time for another round of drinks you felt the exhaustion return to your body. “I think I’m going to head home”, you told them, stretching a little in your seat. “Early shift tomorrow?”, Sylvie asked and you nodded.
“You’re way too selfless, taking on all these extra shifts”, Stella pointed out, but you waved her off. “I’m the new one, so it’s fine. Helps me get to know everyone and everything better and it’s not like I have much to do in this city yet. I only got my gym membership, but I didn’t really have time to look for anything else.”
“See? That’s exactly why you need time off! You should be out exploring the city!” You smiled at Stella’s enthusiasm. “It’s not like it won’t be here tomorrow. I’m planning on staying here, so there’s plenty of time to get to know it all.”
Sylvie offered you a smile. “I’m glad you do. I know it can be quite an adjustment to move to a big city like Chicago, but it will feel like your home in no time.”
You felt your heart squeeze painfully in your chest as you thought back to the past months, which had been filled with nothing but heartbreak, loss and a turmoil of emotions. Even as you had decided to start a new life in Chicago, you had been filled with fear and uncertainty, scared to make the wrong call yet again.
Never could you have imagined to find a job, that was so challenging, but gave you a sense of purpose and a group of friends, that felt like you had met them long ago.
“It already kind of does”, you admitted, your eyes fixed on the empty glass in front of you before you looked up at them again. They both looked at you with big smiles on their faces and you almost felt tears fill your eyes. It had been a long day.
“We should do this more often”, you told them as you got up and grabbed your coat. “That’s what I said!” Stella nodded.
“And I still need to show you that spinning class. You would love it!” Sylvie sounded so excited that you couldn’t help but chuckle. “I am sure. Just text me and we’ll find something.”
“And you’re sure you can’t stay longer?”
Your eyes drifted to the counter as you considered staying for another drink, but your body felt heavy and almost sore from the day’s work. “Next time. But you two have fun and don’t drink too much”, you winked at them.
As you excited the bar you waved towards a few familiar faces before pulling your coat closer around your body to prepare yourself for Chicago’s cold.
Still you shivered as you stepped outside, pulling out your phone to order an Uber. Something you had only done once before, on your way here, but was an easy and quick way of getting around the city.
It would take a few minutes for your driver to arrive and you realized it would have been a lot smarter to wait inside, but you hadn’t thought of it then and you felt too proud to step inside again.
Pressing your hands together you rubbed them against each other a few times to create heat, before slinging your arms around your torso. Chicago’s harsh winters wasn’t something you hadn’t gotten used to yet, but the promise of snow lingering in the air made it almost worth it.
You heard the faint sound of the door opening and closing behind you so you took a step to the side of the building, not wanting to stand in the way of whoever had just left the bar.
To your surprise the person came to stand beside you, his presence alarming you until you glanced up to find none other than Jay Halstead standing next to you.
Immediately your body relaxed again, as if it knew by instinct his presence meant safety. “That was quite an entrance”, he greeted you, referring to the moment you had stepped into Molly’s.
You felt your cheeks flush at the memory, hoping he couldn’t see it in the dim light of the streetlamp. “I didn’t know you were here.” You kept your eyes trained at the empty street in front of you, willing and dreading the moment your driver came to pick you up.
“I was with the unit”, he said and you turned your head towards him. “Are you here often?” He shrugged, his eyes darting to the building. “I guess so, yeah. It’s the place where everyone comes.”
You nodded silently, contemplating his words. “But if I want to be alone, I go to the bar at the corner North Milwaukee Avenue.” You met his eyes curiously. Was he making recommendations, because you were new in the city or did he have another intention?
“So bars and hospitals. Everywhere else I can expect to run into Jay Halstead?” You didn’t know why you asked, but a part of you wanted to know. Wanted to know more about him, what his life was like, what made him who he was.
Jay grinned faintly. “You make it sound like I’ve got issues.” “Do you? Have issues?” You were teasing and he smirked. “Doesn’t everyone?”
“I don’t think I have.” Even as you said it you knew your words couldn’t be farer from the truth. Hadn’t your issues been what had led you here?
Jay watched you for a moment, seemingly picking up on your change of mood, but sensing you weren’t ready to talk about it. You appreciated it, welcoming the silence to sort your thoughts again.
“So what led you here to Chicago?” His question was innocent and something you had been asked countless of times since your move here, but for some reason you felt the urge to be open with him. No lies or excuses.
And even if Jay barely knew you, you thought he would be able to pick up on it. He must be an excellent detective.
“There were some…things I needed to leave behind.” It was vague, but more than you had told most who had asked. Only the girls knew about your breakup, but even with them you hadn’t shared many details.
Jay didn’t ask further, his grave expression suggesting he understood you better than you might have thought. “Why Chicago?” You glanced away from him, taking in the empty road, the skyline with its lights in the background. “I needed a fresh start, somewhere where no one knew who I am. And I got family here, so it made sense.”
You could feel his eyes on you and you swallowed before facing him again. For a moment your eyes locked, none of you saying anything as you started at each other. Jay was the first one to break the heavy atmosphere, a smile dancing at his lips.
“But you’re not a criminal on the run, are you? Because I would have to arrest you, if you were.” The tension that had risen in your body at the mention of your past vanished and you grinned, relieved about his ability to lighten the atmosphere. “What gave it away?”
Jay leaned a little closer, his eyes glistening. “Maybe the way you always look over your shoulder-” You inhaled. Was that really something you did? “-or that you’re nervous around me, a cop.”
The air you had held escaped you in a surprised sound and you hugged your torso a little tighter. “I’m not nervous around you”, you huffed, shaking your head. Jay grinned.
“How is your arm by the way?” You weren’t interested in talking about yourself any longer, shifting the topic onto him. Your gazes travelled down his arm where his jacket was covering the wound you had inspected. It seemed like forever ago and like yesterday at once.
“It’s good. Voight’s keeping me at a leash, make sure I’m 100% before I get into the field again.” He said it like it wasn’t a big deal, but you could hear the strain in his voice. He missed it, being out there on the streets.
“Sounds reasonable to me.” “Yeah.” Jay nodded, a faraway look in his eyes. It seemed like you weren’t the only one with secrets.
You looked up at the sound of a car nearing, a black car approaching the two of you. Checking your phone you held it up. “That’s my ride.”
But you only managed one step towards it before Jay pulled you back, his hand wrapped around your lower arm. You gazed at it, confused and startled by his reaction and he loosened his grip, his hand falling to his side after a moment.
“You know the guy?”, he asked, pointing to the man that was sitting behind the wheel, an impatient expression on his face.
Slowly you shook your head, your eyes flickering between the car and Jay. “But he’s my ride. See-” you held up your phone to him, but Jay paid it little attention.
“Yeah, no, you’re not climbing into that car”, he stated, his voice firm but not unfriendly. “Wait, what?”
Surprised you watched Jay walk towards the car, waiting for the driver to pull down the window before leaning in. You couldn’t hear what was said, only watched the two speak for a minute.
Their conversation ended with Jay handing the man money, before walking back towards you as the car sped away in the darkness.
“What the hell was that?”, you asked as Jay came to stand beside you again, his body just as relaxed as before. “You’re new in Chicago, right?” You didn’t say anything, knowing it was a question he didn’t expect an answer to.
“You should not be climbing into a car with a stranger. And not in the dark.”
Your head spun as you tried to process what he was implying. “It was just an uber! Everyone does that around here.”
You sounded clueless and defensive, shocked about the sudden change of events. Jay eyed you. “Well, then take it from me to never do that again. At least not alone. Chicago’s not a good place, especially for women, trust me on that one.”
You didn’t know what to say, blinking at him as the impact of it sank in. What if Jay hadn’t stepped outside? You doubted anything would have happened, but what if he was right and you had been reckless? Naive?
“So how am I supposed to get around the city then? Because driving in this traffic is madness.”
For the first time since your interruption Jay smiled again. “You can just ask me. I am much cheaper anyway. And on top you will get to see my face.”
You rolled your eyes over his confidence. “Now that’s a deal I can’t decline”, you muttered, fighting the grin that threatened to spread over your face and failing. Damn it.
“But for real, what am I supposed to do? I can’t just call you all the time I want to go somewhere.”
“It wouldn’t be a problem if we went together.”
Your eyes widened as you almost choked on the air. “You mean a date?”
Jay shrugged, his eyes not meeting yours for only a second. “You can pay me back for saving your ass twice.”
“Twice?”
“Getting into that car for one and saving you from freezing here on the street by driving you home.”
Smooth. You couldn’t help the laugh that escaped you. “Does that work with every woman you’re trying to impress?”
Jay shrugged, fiddling for something in his pocket before pulling out his car keys. You watched a car light up at the other side of the street, following Jay towards it.
“I wouldn’t know. And who says I’m trying to impress you?”
“Maybe because of this whole I’m-a-cop-and-I’m-so-tough-thing.”
Now it was Jay’s turn to chuckle. “That’s not just a thing. So, what are you saying?”
Oh. You bit your lip, considering the thought of going on a date with Jay. Hadn’t you just recently decided not to date and focus on yourself for a while?
But you couldn’t deny you wanted to say yes. To spend more time around him and enjoy the feeling of ease he gave you.
“Maybe.”
You said it with a teasing smile, scared Jay might take your answer in a bad way, but he sent you a confident grin. “I can work with that.”

For fun fun Which do you think is sub dom or switch for one Chicago all the ones on your list 😈
content underneath the keep reading tab!
warnings: smut, 18+, errors I missed.
Kelly Severide; Dom but I personally think he is a switch...
Matt Casey; Without a doubt, he is a sub. Though I think he could be a Dom if you make him jealous.
Sylvie Brett; Switch.
Leslie Shay; Dom, but if she trusts her s/o or has been with her s/o then she will be more of a sub.
Gabby Dawson; major DOM Vibes from her.
Connor Rhodes; personally I think he is a Dom, enjoys being a sub on some occasions but is mostly a Dom
Will Halstead; switch, but more so a sub.
Ethan Choi; stuck between a Dom and a sub.I think he is more so a sub in vulnerable moments.
Crockett Marcel; more so leaning on a Dom, but he definitely is a little bit of a sub.
Natalie Manning; I don’t know with her; I’m stuck between a switch but I think she is more so a Dom.
Jay Halstead; personally I think he is a sub, like Matt I believe if he is mad or jealous then he would show a dominant side.
Greg ‘Mouse’ Gerwitz; Oh definitely a sub. Might be a Dom once in a while.
Adam Ruzek; personally I think he is a Dom or so he likes to think he is a Dom, till you become the Dom [that made a whole lot of sense in my head]
Antonio Dawson; Switch? But more so I think it really depends on n the situation at hand. Like I believe he would let his s/o be a Dom, I think he would find that a big turn-on.
Kevin Atwater; definitely a Dom, but he doesn’t mind his s/o being a Dom 😉
Kim Burgess; more so a sub, occasionally a Dom.
Erin Lindsay; switch, thoughshe is a Dom,more than a sub.
Hailey Upton; she is definitelya Dom, but she doesn’t mind her s/o dominating her. Like Antonio, she finds that a big turn-on. she can't help but be putty in her s/o hands.
Hank Voight; Dom.

Can you do a halstead sis were she almost drowns or smt, or maybe she falls in a frozen river or lake (like the ice breaks) and big brothers to the rescue ? Not like the imagine you have "maybe", more like they're on vacation with all inteligence, med , fire, or something like that. If you can't not s'okay. Thanks !
Here you go!
“We go now?” you asked excitedly.
“Just a minute, Munchkin,” Will told you. “Jay’s just finishing up packing lunch.”
“Okay! Don’t forget my juice, Jay Jay!” you yelled to him.
Jay laughed. “Don’t worry, I won’t.” Then, he turned his attention to Will. “You mind grabbing her sand toys out of the closet?”
“No problem,” Will said, and then made his way to the closet.
You thought about following him but instead made your way to the kitchen where Jay was cutting up apples.
You quickly grabbed one and started eating it.
“Excuse me, missy,” Jay started. “Did I say you could have one?”
You giggled. “No, but Will telled me it’s heal-fy.”
“Y/N, do you know what that means?” Will asked as he came back with some sand toys.
“Means I get big and strong like Jay Jay!” you exclaimed and quickly took the toys from him.
“That’s right, kiddo,” Jay agreed. “Big and strong like me.”
“Okay, I’m gonna go get her in the car so you can finish making lunch,” Will told you.
Will picked up towels and two beach chairs.
“I help?” you asked.
“Yes! You can help! Thank you so much. How about you take your princess towel?”
“Okay!”
So then, the two of you made your way to Jay’s truck and Will picked you up and you put your sand toys in the truck. Then, he helped you into the backseat and you set your towel next to you and Will buckled you up.
After a few minutes, Jay came out to the truck and smacked Will upside the head for almost forgetting your life jacket. Then, after a few trips back into the house to bring them out to the truck, the three of you were on your way to the beach to meet up with some other people you knew. You hoped Stella would be there because she can put pretty braids in your hair!
***
You ran as fast as your little legs could carry you through the sand.
“Wait up, Munchkin!” Will yelled. “You gotta have a grown-up with you.”
You put your hand on your hip and huffed, which caused both Jay and Will to laugh.
“Now where did you learn that?” Jay asked as he threw the backpack on his back and picked up two chairs.
“Stella,” you told them without hesitation.
“Of course you did,” Jay said. “Now you can go and run off,” he told you.
You did not need to be told twice, so you started running towards the lake.
“Can I go in now?” you asked as you shimmed off your shorts and Will helped you take off your shirt.
Now you were in just your swimsuit. It was a pink and white striped one-piece and you loved it. You thought it was so pretty!
You were about to grab your life jacket from the beach chair Jay was setting down when you saw four people walking up to you.
“Stella!” you exclaimed and ran up to her. “Will you put braids in my hair? Pretty, pretty please?”
“Just let me sit the chairs down and then I most definitely can,” Stella said.
“Yay!” you exclaimed.
***
It had been an hour and you had played in the sand and then tried to play volleyball with Stella and Sylvie, which didn’t work out very well because you were much smaller than the two.
“Stella, you go swim with me?” you asked sweetly.
“What are we?” Jay asked. “Chopped liver?”
You had no idea what that meant, but replied anyway. “Yeah!”
“That’s right, Y/N! High five!” Casey yelled and you ran over and gave him a high five.
“Y/N, come get your life jacket!” Will yelled.
You quickly shook your head. “No! I’m a big girl. No life jacket!”
“I know you’re a big girl, but…” He took a look at the sky and the dark clouds that were starting to roll in. “It’s gonna storm soon and I don’t want you to get pulled under.”
“What if– what if I stay where I can touch?” you asked.
Jay groaned. Neither he nor Will wanted to start a screaming match with you on a public beach. “If you only go up to your belly button, then you can go in without your life jacket.”
“Okay! Let’s go, Stella!”
You quickly grabbed your hand and then the three of you went into the water and started jumping the waves together.
***
“I’m gonna go put my sunglasses up and go to the bathroom. I’ll be right back, Y/N. I promise,” Stella told you fifteen minutes later.
“Okay!”
As she walked out of the water and up the beach, you looked at everyone. Sylvie and Casey weren’t there, so you assumed they went to the bathroom. Kelly was laying on his belly on a towel with his face away from the water. Stella’s back was to you because she was walking up the beach. And Jay and Will were engrossed in a very heated and competitive one-on-one round of volleyball.
You were just gonna go up to your chin. You gonna be in kindergarten in a few months! You were a big girl!
So you did…and that was a big mistake.
***
“Time out! Time out!” Jay yelled. “I need a drink,” he panted and grabbed his beer and took a sip.
“The reason you’re probably thirsty is because alcohol dehydrates you,” Will pointed out.
“Shut up. This is the only one I’m drinking today and I don’t need you ruining it with medical facts.
Then, he looked up to water and froze.
“What? What’s wrong?” Will asked quickly.
“Y/N,” he muttered.
“What?”
“Y/N!” Jay yelled at the top of his lungs. “Y/N!” He sprinted towards the water with Stella and Will hot on his heels.
“She was just here!” Stella yelled. “I just came to put my sunglasses back!”
But it was like Jay was on autopilot. He was scanning the water for any signs of life, something that he had had to do a lot in the military.
He saw something.
A tiny hand reaching out of the water.
He sprinted out further and then dove into the water and started swimming as fast as he could, leaving Stella and Will to wonder what he possibly saw.
***
It felt like something had pulled you under the water.
Maybe it was the Loch Ness monster!
You tried to paddle as hard as you could like you learned in swimming lessons and tried to swim to the surface. You got one hand up, but it was no use.
You kept trying, but eventually, your little body got tired.
You felt like you did when you threw a tantrum at Jay or Will for not letting you stay up and watch cartoons
Tired and like your head was gonna explode like a volcano.
You knew you could hold your breath for twenty seconds, but it had to have been past that.
Then, you felt something else grab you by the shoulder.
Uh, oh.
The Loch Ness monster had a friend and now they were both coming after you!
You were about to be lunch for two sea monsters!
***
Jay knew not to dive straight into a rip current, but he did anyway. He swam as hard he could and finally he felt something…which felt like a kid.
So, he grabbed on, and swam up and to the side, which was what you were supposed to do when you caught in a rip current.
Finally his feet touched the sand and he quickly sprinted up on the beach.
This was when he heard the best sound in the world: you coughing.
“Set her down against me!” Will yelled and he quickly set you down against Will who started hitting your back gently to help you expel the water.  You coughed up some more. “There it is. You’re okay, sweetheart. You’re okay.”
After a minute, Will said that all the water was probably out of your lungs, but that he wanted you to get to the lifeguard’s medic station just in case.
“The monsters…” you said as Jay quickly scooped you up into his arms.
“What monsters, kiddo?” Will asked.
“Dey- Dey pull me and den I was under water.”
“That’s called a rip currrent,” Jay explained. “It’s what happens when a storm is coming. And if you ever get caught in one again, you swim to the side.”
You pointed to either side of you. “Like that?”
“Just like that. And wear your life jacket.”
You huffed. “Fine.”
“Man, I don’t think we need to bring her over there. She seems fine–”
“Jay, I’m the doctor here, so we’re bringing her over there.”
***
After your visit with the pretty lifeguard (who Will tried to flirt with), it started raining. So, Stella brought you to the bathrooms with her and Sylvie and helped you change. Both girls said that you were really, really brave.
Then, when Jay and Will pulled into Mcdonald’s, they looked back to see that you were asleep. They still got you your happy meal anyway because they knew you’d wake up when one of them carried you into the apartment, and you’d be hungry.
Let’s just say, it took Will and Jay a long time to let you go into Lake Michigan without a life jacket.
