Less Famous But Super Weird Deep Sea Fish
I’m gonna write a post of cool animal facts just to Blaze later. Typical deep sea anglerfish and some others are pretty famous but I’m going to spend maybe even ten whole dollars to make an extra thousand people look at these other fish that I don’t think enough people know about. Sources included for all images, many with additional information wherever possible, but there’s still very little known about many of these animals!
Tumblr media
GIGANTACTIS - common name ”whipnose seadevil” - the Schmidt ocean institute recently took this detailed photo from a deep sea ROV of a fish almost never observed live, but it sure does actually look dead. These anglerfish spend most of their time floating upside-down like this with their proboscis-like lure dangling below, and one guess is that they may send the lure down into the tunnels of burrowing worms or crustaceans. In some species, the lure can be over six times the length of the body. MORE FISH:
Tumblr media
MONOGNATHUS - meaning “one jaw” - never observed alive and never given a common name (how about just monojaw?) this animal is closely related to the more famous “pelican eels” or “gulper eels,” but lacks the huge, expandable mouth. Instead, Monognathus has a strange skull with technically no upper jaw, just a gaping hole or in some species a bill-like protrusion. The thin, simplified lower jaws exist to swing prey into the single, venomous fang on the roof of the mouth.
Tumblr media
THAUMATICHTHYS - common name “wolf trap anglerfish” - also going by the cute name “wunderfish,” the source of this illustration was a japanese marine bio site that unfortunately went down over a decade ago, and no live photographs have ever been taken. The “lure” (illicium) of an anglerfish is actually modified from the first ray of the dorsal fin, but this angler’s anatomy is so twisted that the same appendage protrudes from the roof of its huge, broad upper jaw, which folds in half like a hot dog bun to create an illuminated tunnel (figure 2 in the image) that snaps shuts like a Venus’ fly trap on very gullible prey. On this page is a fantastic x-ray scan of one specimen.
Tumblr media
IPNOPS - common name “Grideye” - this fish has adorable and beautiful larvae found closer to the sea’s surface, with large and well developed eyes. As they mature, the eyes deteriorate until they’re gone altogether, replaced with a pair of reflective, luminous yellow pits on the top of the skull, looking like somebody scooped its brains out. These pits are lined with thousands of photosensitive cells that must allow the fish to “see” even the faintest traces of distant light, and especially the light emitted by other deep sea organisms.
Tumblr media
STYLEPHORUS - common name “tube eye” or “threadtail” - incredibly rare close up photographs almost all come from Dante Fenolio, see HERE. This fish is so weird that it’s even in its own entire order, which is basically like if only one single beetle or one single frog was ever discovered on the whole planet. Its big, binocular-like eyes see in full detail as well as full color, which is quite unusual for deep sea creatures. It also has a very large mouth, technically, but a very tiny mouth opening, its jaws covered in a stretchy membrane with only one tiny, tubular hole. As it widens the jaws, it pulls water (and tiny prey) through the hole with powerful, precise force that disturbs little of the surrounding water; it’s a living vacuum cleaner with pinpoint sniper accuracy.
Tumblr media
TYPHLONUS NASUS - common name “faceless cusk eel” - hauntingly weird video clip of this animal here. There are many species of deep sea cusk eel, and they have a few things in common with the more popular but unrelated “blobfish;” they tend to be soft, bulbous creatures adapted to float neutrally in the water until they really need to move, feeding on just about any small creature they bump into. This species is so named because its mouth and nostrils are on the underside of its fat, gelatinous head and its tiny eyes are invisible beneath many layers of tissue. Yeah I know what else some of you think it looks like so feel free to get that out of your system.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MALACOSTEUS - common name “stoplight loosejaw” or “rat trap fish” - photos from Descna, these are dead specimens but the “fleshless” jaw and “detached” head are both completely normal: this fish can swing its skull outward like an arm to grab prey, and the lack of any floor to the lower jaw allows it to lash out with more extreme speed. This is also one of the few deep sea fish to produce red light, from bright “searchlights” under its eyes. The red spectrum of sunlight doesn’t penetrate into the deep sea, so the color red is invisible to most of its inhabitants. The loosejaw’s red lights allow it to brightly illuminate its prey before striking, while the victim usually sees no light at all. A fantastic illustration here by abiogenesis on Deviantart.
If you ultimately liked getting a list of preposterous little creatures as a blazed post let me know and I will eventually maybe do others, especially if I just make the money back through my site and store (see profile)

angler fish
The anglerfish are fish of the teleost order Lophiiformes (/ˌlɒfiɪˈfɔːrmiːz/).[1] They are bony fish named for their characteristic mode of predation, in which a modified luminescent fin ray (the esca or illicium) acts as a lure for other fish. The luminescence comes from symbiotic bacteria, which are thought to be acquired from seawater,[2][3] that dwell in and around the sea.
Some anglerfish are notable for extreme sexual dimorphism and sexual symbiosis of the small male with the much larger female, seen in the suborder Ceratioidei, the deep sea anglerfish. In these species, males may be several orders of magnitude smaller than females.[4]
Anglerfish occur worldwide. Some are pelagic (dwelling away from the sea floor), while others are benthic (dwelling close to the sea floor). Some live in the deep sea (such as the Ceratiidae), while others live on the continental shelf, such as the frogfishes and the Lophiidae (monkfish or goosefish). Pelagic forms are most often laterally compressed, whereas the benthic forms are often extremely dorsoventrally compressed (depressed), often with large upward-pointing mouths.[citation needed]
Evolution[edit]
The earliest fossils of anglerfish are from the Eocene Monte Bolca formation of Italy, and these already show significant diversification into the modern families that make up the order.[5] Given this, and their close relationship to the Tetraodontiformes, which are known from Cretaceous fossils, they likely originated during the Cretaceous.[6][7] A 2010 mitochondrial genome phylogenetic study suggested the anglerfishes diversified in a short period of the early to mid-Cretaceous, between 130 and 100 million years ago.[8] A more recent preprint reduces this time to the Late Cretaceous, between 92 to 61 million years ago.[7] Other studies indicate that anglerfish only originated shortly after the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event as part of a massive adaptive radiation of percomorphs, although this clashes with the extensive diversity already known from the group by the Eocene.[7][9]
Classification[edit]
FishBase,[1] Nelson,[10] and Pietsch[11] list 18 families, but ITIS[12] lists only 16. The following taxa have been arranged to show their evolutionary relationships.[4]

“Even one who is pure in heart / and says their prayers by night / may become a ___ when the night-flower blooms and the silver moon is bright.”

With a practiced kind of unsure excitement, Miranda marched her way up to Damien’s favorite place to play hooky from school staff, to lift two immaculately wrapped gifts up into his arms. One was obviously a bottle of some kind, while the other was a much larger box - both wrapped up in silver ribbon and shiny red paper that mimicked flames in the light.
“Although my kingdom does not often recognize other royals’ birthdays outside of our own - I suppose I could make an exception for you, as a good friend of mine. After all, we both have ours in March, so it’s only fair I honor a fellow March-born.” Miranda’s fins pressed back a little, a sheepish smile playing on her face - a dusting of lights across her shoulders speaking where she did not that she really, genuinely hoped Damien would enjoy her gifts.
“Happy Birthday, Damien. I sincerely mean it.”
Inside the first gift : the bottle revealed itself to be some type of mer-made wine. The bottle itself was large, with the glass on the sides curving and winding into a spiral-esque pattern, but the front and back were flat and blocky - perfectly suited to see the pygmy sea serpent coiled up inside, mouth bared open to show off its rows of fangs and double jaws, fins flared in a permanent threat pose. The booze itself glowed in an unearthly red, and while the labeling was written in a mer dialect - it was clear it had been brewed with extra potency.
The second gift was a bit more personal : once the paper came off, it revealed a kind of show-box, made of dark stone that seemed to absorb the light around it rather than reveal its true colors. Sitting on top of it was a crest in gold, showing where it came from, with more mer writing framed by images of hydrothermal vents and the tubeworms that surrounded them, matching with a lock on the side, made into the box for safekeeping.
Thankfully, it was unlocked currently, the key to it kept safe inside - for when it was opened, it revealed a soft bed of red silk that flickered like the wrapping paper had, around which a knife and its sheathe was nested.
Immediately, the craftsmanship was clear. The handle gleamed wickedly - it had been etched with some kind of winding creature with a segmented body and something that could almost be reasoned to be legs, but not quite, made with some odd type of material, almost akin to glass, but with unnatural ease to its grip and a sturdiness unlike any glass. Underneath it could be seen something hot and burning, as if the magma veins underneath the earth’s crust had been stored within, though it seemed to not give off any more than a light warmth to its touch. The maybe-liquid moved and shifted, sliding under the points in the knife’s grip where there was no segmented body, which had been left a dark damascened metal. At the end of the handle, there perched a perfect replica of a dire wolf’s skull in a sharp silver.
Drawing from its sheathe, made out of some scaled leather, came the blade. Something was... off, with the metal. It wasn’t that it was badly made or delicate - but if a blade could know hatred without possessing a soul or even awareness. Only one edge was sharp, curving up in a mundane blade to meet the straight line of the dull edge, but halfway to the hilt, it switched, becoming wickedly serrated, akin to a saw or a shark’s tooth. And the aspect that seemed to hoard all of one’s attention, though otherwise plain in comparison, was the flat of the blade. It had been made with... Some odd technique, that lifted up the metal, seemed to shape it into the teeth and jaws of a wolf-trap anglerfish’s. By all accounts, the addition seemed purely cosmetic, with the lifting and further etching giving it the illusion of cruel jaws, though it itself was not sharp.
However, looking at the design... Something was wrong enough about it to say that it having sharp points would’ve been mercy.
Miranda cleared her throat, trying to grab Damien’s attention back to her, with a grave importance to her words, though she kept her tone light. “I must warn you now - do not cut anything with that blade that you would not want dead and gone forever. And absolutely do not cut yourself on it. Trust me.”
A smile pulled itself back onto her face, though it had never truly fallen. “Anyhow - do you like it? It took a bit of planning, but I managed to get it commissioned from one of the best smiths of my kingdom’s Royal Armory, and just in time!”

Anglerfish
Castiel once told them that Archangels were heaven’s most terrifying weapon. Gabriel is no exception.
AO3
Even with the apocalypse looming, and a new and unexpected ally, life goes on. Dean’s out getting food, and had Cas tagged along with him, only sparing a long glance at the last two occupants of the motel room before he left.
Sam knows that Gabriel is technically on their side now, but that doesn’t mean he trusts him. He’s got one eye on Gabriel where he’s sat in the corner of the room, the other on his research.
Gabriel’s sitting remarkably still, almost unnaturally so, sprawled in an armchair. Cas once told them that archangels were heaven's most terrifying weapons. With that in mind, most other people would look at Gabriel and say, there’s no way that he’s an archangel. He’s too soft. Too human. It’s a very convincing lie, and looking at the other archangels they’ve met, Sam might almost believe it.
If he had to describe them, Michael would be a wolf. Loyal, relentless, the strength of a pack behind him. Lucifer might be a great white bear, scarred and battered, unpredictable and deadly. Raphael is an eagle, all raw power and majesty.
Sam’s been stalling on a metaphor to use for Gabriel for a while now. Nothing quite fit. But he’s finally figured it out. Gabriel’s not a cute dog, or a platypus. Nowhere near.
  Gabriel is an anglerfish.
He doesn’t seem like a vicious predator of the deep at first. That’s the point. He’s humorous and light, carefully relaxed in their presence. But the affection of humanity, the trickster trappings, the sweets and mocking laughter, it’s all a neat disguise. A lure to draw you closer, bright and dancing and almost irresistible. Even Sam finds himself drawn towards Gabriel, falling under the spell. There’s something about the way he moves, the way he talks. Something that invitingly promises more, better, if you’ll step just a little closer.
But behind that bright façade, there’s something lurking in the darkness. Something bigger and much more dangerous, bulging opalescent eyes all-seeing, rows and rows of jagged teeth ready to impale anything that gets too close. It’s too easy to forget that what they’re looking at is a vessel. The real Gabriel is not there. No, Gabriel is looming behind, just out of sight. Sometimes, if Sam concentrates hard, he can feel it; a prickle on the back of his neck. A presence in the corner of the room. He even captures glimpses sometimes. The split second before a crowd of demons are reduced to a grease smear on an abandoned warehouse floor. When he wakes in the middle of the night to find Gabriel’s vessel watching them through the darkness, still as a predator, eyes gleaming in the night.
Because that’s what Gabriel really is. A patient predator, playing the long game. Hidden in depths so dark and deep that only prey will ever find him. And then? Well, Gabriel’s prey never live to tell the tale. Sam’s not easily frightened, has never been one to run from danger, but with Gabriel… He’s fascinated, but he knows better than to get too close.
Gabriel’s staring at him from across the room, head tilted curiously. Like he finds Sam’s wariness amusing.
“Something up, Sam?” He asks, eyes too-bright and shining with illusions. He smiles, and Sam wonders whether he’s the only one who can see the rows upon rows of jagged needle teeth behind it.
  “No, I’m good. Thanks.”
He’s glad that they have an archangel on their side, on humanity’s side. But with Gabriel, all Sam can hope for is that they stay off the menu.

Less famous deep sea fish I think deserve more consideration:
Tumblr media
Wolf-trap fish (Thaumaticthydiae) (image source) : this is actually a very divergent anglerfish with a long body and a lure that dangles down through the roof of its mouth. You can see how the huge upper jaw is folded almost inside-out, which is its normal resting position. The two lobes of the jaw fold downwards to close on prey.
Because of this arrangement and the location of the lure, it’s thought that this angler specializes in prey that live on the floor of the abyss.
Tumblr media
Monognathidae (image source): this is a relative of the gulper eel, but instead of having huge pelican-like jaws, it has a unique switchblade-like lower jaw and only one tooth, situated in the roof of its mouth and supposedly venomous, though it’s hard to find sources going into any further detail on that.
Tumblr media
Tube Eye Fish (Stylephorus) (image source) : this fish has an incredibly long, threadlike tail, huge binocular-like eyes, and fairly large jaws but only a TINY actual mouth opening. When the jaws are opened, that tiny opening results in a powerful but thin current of suction, and the eyes probably allow it to aim that vortex with extreme precision.
Tumblr media
Grideye fish (Ipnopidae) (image source) : by the time it reaches adulthood, this fish completely loses its original eyes and instead develops a pair of concave, dish-like sensory pits that only seem to detect light and dark while emitting a faint yellow glow of their own. Why it goes to this extreme really isn’t known, so there might be something to these weird eye-pits that we don’t know yet. All grideyes are hermaphroditic and they spend a lot of time sitting on the ground, eating worms and crustaceans.
Tumblr media
Tripod fish (also Ipnopidae!) (image source) : grideye cousins and probably the best known of the fish I put here, though you might not know everything that makes them so bizarre. They look like fairly ordinary fish without their “tripod” extensions, but they use those to stand in one place for hours, maybe even days, using their fins to catch minute bits of food. It’s the kind of feeding mechanism seen in barnacles, corals, sea lilies and other stationary filter-feeders!
