tbh all jiang cheng ships are hypothetically good to me because jiang cheng is just so not in a good place for dating or marriage. no one should wife him up which is why anyone wifing him up has great comedy potential. it is a situation you're putting him in where he's forced to cope with intimacy and the possibility of betrayal or rejection. he's going be thinking about his parents' marriage except for the times he's going to be thinking about his sister and his redacted. and also there is the potential for someone to die horribly and leave him alone with a baby. again.

#tagging this with one of my more controversial opinions which is that while we the readers are basically told that the rumours are false #and wei wuxian believes the rumours are false #from jiang cheng's perspective wei wuxian is schrödinger's brother in like three different ways #one of them literal! does he trust that his dad didn't cheat on his mom: no. obviously #does he trust that wei wuxian's mom wouldn't cheat on her husband? he doesn't know her and he doesn't have wwx's attachment to the idea of #her #so anyway legally no biologically maybe emotionally REDACTED #ps yanli said so in public once REDACTED REDACTED REDACTED #maybe he'll think about wc and wzl a little #because you know. snuggles on the lotus pier throne #maybe had something going on with his mom #came into his house and did things to his body that can't be undone #yanli... like the yanli issues are so depressing but if he somehow married and it was somehow not a disaster #always the possibility of being torn from him by death

FACT: When Yu Ziyuan and Wen Zhuliu face off, Yu Ziyuan angrily disparages him for changing his name to that of his new master and helping to further their goals of violent world domination, to which Wen Zhuliu calmly replies that they simply serve different masters now. placeholder post for a drabble I might write, but please consider Meng Yao somehow stealing the secret of Wen Zhuliu's magic hand.

Imagine Wen Yao, in Nightless city, taking over WZL's role in some way (either by copying the technique, ingratiating himself as his student, or some situational cannibalism, all viable ways of stealing core melting secrets imho)

The ramifications are so juicy. Whether or not he tells WRH about his new skill, he is still indispensable to him, especially if WZL is out of the picture - and think about what he could do with a Core Melting Hand in his arsenal.

I'm just ruminating here, but I feel like it'd be a very convenient way to neutralize Nie Mingjue without killing him, for example.

Back in Nightless City, when NMJ is taken prisoner, Wen Yao could taunt him and then take away his cultivation - both for show (to appease WRH) and for self defense, tbh (he knows the fallout will be bad, and he is correct about this in canon). Granted, this would not make NMJ any less furious with him! In fact, he'd probably hate him more. But JGY would have the reasonable excuse that he did it as an alternative to killing him, and for one LXC would buy that, even if NMJ has his doubts.

What does that mean postwar? At this point, NMJ would just be a normal guy and wouldn't be able to hurt a cultivator, not even one with a middling golden core, which means JGY might not fear for his life and might not have to kill him. (NMJ, ironically, might get to live a long life! Has no excuse not to marry for heirs now, but can also continue to lead the sect and this means everyone [except him] is generally happier, including Nie Huaisang.)

What's more, if they decide to keep NMJ's lack of a core a secret not to make the Nie an obvious target, then the sworn brotherhood could be suggested specifically to conceal NMJ's situation, putting him in JGY's debt. There are a lot of interesting ramifications when you remove fear for his life as JGY's primary feeling when interacting with NMJ, and he may take Jin Guangshan's orders to get rid of him with a grain of salt - or even be able to convince JGS that it is not necessary if he leaks the secret of NMJ's missing core. (But the political fallout would then be an entirely different can of worms!)

Also LXC knows and he thinks thatJGY being able to rip out a dude's core but obviously not even considering doing it to him is very sexy.

I like to hc WZL to be one of WRH's closest confidants, so I think it would also be funny if drunk WRH was flustering the shit out of MY and WZL is like "Sect leader. That's enough," and WRH, much like a cat is all like "No!! No!!!! Yao'er is too good not to praise!!!" And then goes to his knees. MY is wondering how he'll ever face WZL again and WRH is having the time of his life

Cue WRH, when he sobers up, going "Wtf did I do!?!!??!?!!?!?!?" and MY is short circuiting and all tingly while WZL tiredly explains what happened

He totally can actually, and the day Sect Leader Wen has not been up to some tomfoolery would be the day WZL will actually be surprised :')

So yeah, I'm fully vibing with WZL being the designated sect leader-sitter (which is pretty much just a nice title bc gods know the day has yet to come when anyone can stop WRH from doing whatever he wants), acting as the ignored voice of reason, knowing fully well that in the end, he's just going to dead-pan a detailed explanation of how WRH didn't really listen to him, but what does he knows

And really, of all the embarrassing things WRH could have done, blowing his perfectly little aide in front of an audience is absolutely not one of those 😌. And WZL knew it too

Your Schrodinger's brother tags re: wwx and jc. One of my favourite AUs to have fun with in my brain is WHAT IF Jiang Cheng is the bastard. As in his bio father is Wen Zhuliu. And he somehow realizes this bc mumblemumblen golden core. Very fun position to put JC in emotionally!!! (If he doesn't figure it out nothing changes from his pov so I need him to find out for him to have emotional turmoil).

This is obviously not canon but I find it fun to think about.

tragically i cannot see yzy ever cheating on jfm but this would break everything inside of jc's brain. possibly at the right time it would actually be freeing in a twisted way! there's a cosmic reason he's bad at jianging and his dad doesn't seem to like him. he can just put it all down and stop trying. of course then he had no identity and no place in the world but you know. trade offs.

I think what my preference for CQL boils down to is that, for all its inconsistency, it truly seems to cherish all of its characters. Some of that is because it’s live-action media and cherishing your character (which is not the same as liking them, and certainly not the same as agreeing with them) is your job as an actor, but the adaptation itself really devotes itself to its supporting cast. It falls short in some regards, but every character is valued for what they have to offer the story. I do not feel that this is true for the other canons. The novel cares about its cast, but WWX takes priority—and of course he does, it’s his story! His romance story, even! I don’t begrudge it that; it’s just not my thing. The manhua and donghua, meanwhile, sound aggressively disinterested in the supporting characters, and flatten or obliterate all the lovely background stories that don’t directly impact Wangxian’s romance, including what Wangxian have going on outside of each other.

#the whole Thing with WZL and YZY is a great example of what I mean #that didn’t NEED to be there! it isn’t critical to anything in the plot #but it’s there anyway! these two characters who are only in a few episodes have this whole unspoken history separate from everything else #we get that little shot of WZL glancing back at YZY’s body snd knowingly drugging himself #because the show wanted him to be a person with interiority and not just WC’s henchman or a badass miniboss #even though that depth doesn’t serve a practical purpose and nobody in-universe is even aware of it
