Thursday, January 31: Obsession, “Bang ‘Em ‘Til They Bleed”

Mike Vescera must’ve planned on singing for Yngwie Malmsteen years before he actually got the gig, since his wailing on Obsession’s “Bang ‘Em ‘Til They Bleed” aimed straight for the castles by the fjords. Scarred for Life bore almost no resemblance to Look What the Cat Dragged In, and Enigma was likely using the windfall of cash they generated from Poison’s debut to subsidize acts like Obsession and Hurricane, but the New Haven band’s full-length debut otherwise hewed to mid ‘80s American metal conventions. As such, “Bang ‘Em ‘Til They Bleed” hooted and hollered like it was storming the gates, but also fell in line with what Enigma usually put out by including more than a whiff of hairspray. And like Malice, Obsession couldn’t help but temper the force of their attack with juvenile lyrics and low-rent cheesiness. Of course, those were likely some of the very qualities that attracted Yngwie to Vescera, who would ultimately use songs like this one as a springboard to a lengthy and productive career.

Thursday, December 13: Ark, “Burn the Sun”

Before he gained wider international renown singing in the first iteration of Masterplan, Jørn Lande was best known for his vocals on Ark’s two albums. And funnily enough, Lande was actually originally the unknown entity in that prog metal supergroup, as the other members had done time in acts ranging from Conception to Yngwie Malmsteen and Riot. Despite this, it was the vocals that took tracks like “Burn the Sun” to the next level, for despite the substantial musical dexterity on display, the sheer power of Lande’s voice was something of a revelation. Not to suggest the music wasn’t up to snuff: Randy Coven and John Macaluso were a mighty rhythm section, with Macaluso’s drumming showing more range and complexity than on his more straightforward work with Riot, while Tore Østby riffed with an appealing mix of aggression, melody and technicality. Strangely, Ark didn’t really take off, despite the pedigree and the nascent star power of the man behind the mic, but “Burn the Sun” at least offered an early glimpse of a powerhouse singer who would soon emerge as a semi-major force in power metal.
