Why do people like Saban dubbing digimon but really hate 4kids for dubbing anime?
To be honest, I don't think that's quite the case. I think most people who tend to have apologia-level worship of the Saban Digimon dubs also have similar sentiments towards 4Kids dubs. It's "my childhood", so it's sacred and you're not allowed to say anything bad about it.
That said, it is true that 4Kids is the one usually thrown under the bus to blame for radical dub changes while Saban is treated as "comparatively loyal (for the time)". This is misleading at best. If it's loyal for the time, it's by a very small margin, and certainly not enough to claim that it's "practically the same" as the Japanese version as many do.
Saban's Digimon dub looks closer to the original because all of the surface elements supposedly look closer:
They kept almost all of the names in Japanese and only gave them "nicknames", unlike other dubs that changed the names radically! (Except they functionally never mentioned those "nicknames" again after the first time, and no matter how many letters each name may share in common with their Japanese versions, that doesn't change the fact they treated most Japanese names like hot potatoes because they sound too Japanese.)
They left the setting in Japan instead of making it a fictional American city! (Except they tried to do that until the number of Tokyo landmarks made it too recognizable, and it's still something they were able to get away with because the Digital World is prominent enough in the narrative for them to not worry about it too much.)
They didn't cut any episodes! (Probably the only one that does hold legitimate water in comparison to 4Kids actually cutting entire episodes at times, but one also has to consider that Digimon is a heavily serialized narrative where dropping an episode would create serious problems for the story, whereas you could get away with a dropped episode from 4Kids' longer properties with filler episodes since more of their shows were based on manga.)
They didn't make any huge changes to the overall plot! (Almost nobody watched Adventure or 02 for the plot alone, and it's only natural that slowly changing every single line to suggest completely different characterizations from their Japanese counterparts would have a massive effect, especially on 02 where it didn't have an extremely linear in-your-face plot that offset that to some degree -- and even then, Adventure wasn't completely immune, because it didn't stop Koushirou and Mimi's Japanese characterization changes from still remaining relatively unknown in the English-speaking fandom.)
"The Digimon (American) English dub didn't change that much" is the biggest lie the fandom will ever feed you, yet it still persists to this day because people will look at these surface factors and call it a day (and even worse, because this myth persists, fewer people will be inclined to check it out in Japanese and confirm whether this is actually true or not). It's never been about how many actual changes there were; it's about how many were noticeable. Few people talk about how there's actually a significant difference in how dub changes were handled the moment Disney took over (late Tamers to Savers), because it's hard to notice unless you actually have seen the Japanese version. Fusion gets treated like a laughingstock dub just because people were actually able to watch it in Japanese first and see how much got changed later; in terms of actual changes, it's not that much worse than Adventure or 02, it's just that it happened during a time it was less socially acceptable to do that.
So because of that, Saban is seen in the lens of a localization company that did its best to be "loyal" in a market where the 4Kids method of drastic changes were more dominant, when in fact they were aggressive about it in different ways (and you can see a very fair share of derogatory, dangerously-racist-leaning comments about Japanese media, writing style, and content from people who were involved in Digimon localization, so it's frankly kind of absurd to imagine they were doing all of this because they cared so much about loyalty to the origin). On the flip side, it is on record that a lot of 4Kids' radical changes were actually requested by the Japanese side itself, because they themselves wanted to push something that would be appealing to the American market, and 4Kids would sometimes go as aggressive as they did specifically because they got the Japanese licensor's blessing to go as hard as they wanted.
(I actually personally prefer 4Kids' original music and theme songs to the Digimon ones -- they come off to me as feeling like they have a lot more genuine spirit put into them -- but that's just my personal subjective opinion, and everyone has their own music tastes. Anyway, that's a digression.)
I personally don't think it's productive to be mad at the dubs themselves. This was all more than 20 years ago, the market was very different, the attitude towards localization was different, Japanese companies had their own varying stakes in the situation, and most importantly, what happened happened and I'm not going to blame kids for watching the only thing that was accessible to them at the time and developing an attachment to it. I don't think there's any point to speculating how Digimon would have been accepted in the US/UK/etc. if it hadn't been changed so radically, because the fact is, we don't live in that alternate timeline, so we won't get anything useful out of fixating on that idea too much.
The only thing I have negative feelings about regarding the American English Digimon dub is, simply, the way the fandom still talks about it. With things like Pokémon or One Piece or Yu-Gi-Oh, where everyone already understands that 4Kids made super drastic changes, if you say you're talking about the Japanese version because what you're discussing wasn't in the dub, people will easily believe you and acknowledge you're talking about something different, but if you try to claim the Adventure or 02 dub was different enough to merit a distinction, you get called nitpicky or accused of being delusional. This is what I really wish would stop. The dub was different! I know localization discourse loves to conflate "different" with "bad", so people don't want to admit that their childhood dub changed a lot, but it did! That's reality! Please don't make this more frustrating to talk about than it needs to be!

how do u even start getting into Digimon?? there so much stuff, i dont even know where to begin. like, there is like a hundred shows??? do i start with the first one that came out??
Idk man it just happened??
No, but seriously, don't worry about it! There aren't even that many shows if you ask me. I'll put a list below the cut! I'll list all movies too, so it'll look like more than it really is. Also the dates are the japanese air dates.
Obviously starting with the first season, Digimon Adventure is an easy pick, it also has the most sequels and movies.
But aside from the Adventure related media, all other Digimon Seasons are completely self-contained, and you can just go and watch any! They also all explore "Digimon" and the Digital World in different ways. I personally loved them all.
For the anime I also highly recommend watching the Japanese original. I'm sorry for anyone who grew up with it, but I can barely stand watching the English Dub at all. If you know German though, the German Dub is really good. I still prefer the Japanese original, but the German Dub is at least a translation and not a fan fiction.
The same basically goes for the games. You can just pick any of them up! Also, all Digimon games kind of do their own thing in terms of gameplay and mechanics. There's similarities too, but usually each have their own vibe. A lot of the DS titles do work very similar though!

Giant monster tamer megathread
Decided for the sake of education and my own neurodiversity to make a post including every video game series or stand alone title I know of that focuses on creature capturing competitions that isn't Pokemon.
One big exception: the game has to be a reasonably playable state. So no games that are effectively or literally lost media (like Micromon) or games that only playable state is currently a short demo (like Bestieball). With that in mind here we go:
Digimon
This one is pretty obvious. While more of a multimedia franchise it has tons of games to its IP. The one that probably would appeal most to Pokenerds is Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth and its sequel as they're turned based RPGs with a monster capture mechanic.
Monster Rancher
Another one I think a lot of folks have heard about or least millennials would remember. I haven't personally played any of these titles myself but from what I gather they're raising sims with tournament combat. For a while their availability was mostly limited to emulation but Monster Rancher 1 and 2 have been ported to modern systems like the Switch.
Yo-kai Watch
A mid 2010s franchise that had a whole lot of initial success in Japan. Its an RPG series that doesn't take itself very seriously with cute and goofy monster design based on the Japanese folklore creatures called... well yokai. Has real time combat instead of turn based and more luck based capturing mechanics than Pokemon.
Palworld
Brand new game that's only in its alpha release as of now. Its effectively a parody of Pokemon where you're stuck trying to survive in the wilderness so you must build a base and farm resources to survive. Game did have some initial controversy due to some of its designs stepping a little TOO close to being outright ripoffs of existing designs. Also you can capture and enslave humans which may not vibe with some folks.
Temtem
Basically Pokemon meets a MMO lite. The game can be played mostly as single player campaign but does unfortunately still require a constant internet connection. Battles are turned based but 2 versus 2.
Shin Megami Tensei
What could be consider the original monster tamer game. The series is aimed at a somewhat older audience and the plots tend to be more philosophical then like "gotta be the best *insert title here* ever". Focuses a lot on fusing monsters as well as trying to convince them to join you. You actually battle alongside your monsters.
Dragon Quest Monsters
Monster Capturing mechanics do exist in the mainline DQ games as well (at least since DQ5 I think?) but its these games have them as the main gameplay. Much like SMT it focuses on fusing monsters as one of the main ways to expand your library off available species.
Nexomon
Franchise that started its life as a mobile game but has since gotten ports to other systems. Its very similar to Pokemon in terms of creature designs and combat but the worldbuilding is quite different as is its tone being a lot more comedic.
Coromon
Indie game with visuals similar to Pokemon Black and White. Its story was originally kinda so-so and its ending pretty abrupt but its since gotten a free patch that smoothed that out quite a bit. Also has a sorta unique "shiny" system where alternate colors are associated with higher potential which can actually be altered once. Also has a built in randomizer and "nuzlocke" mode.
Cassette Beasts
A pretty recent indie game. Unlike all the others you don't capture or hatch monsters but rather record them to transform into them yourself. Battles are always between you and a companion which there are multiple to befriend throughout your journey (including a dog!). Has some really interesting quirks with its type chart that adds a lot of extra depth. Will soon be releasing a mutiplayer update for anyone that's into that kind of thing.
Monster Crown
A game with visual based on the Gameboy era. It has some pretty fascinating breeding mechanics and a somewhat darker tone than Pokemon. WARNING: DO NOT GET THE SWITCH PORT! For whatever reason its especially glitchy and I have genuinely gotten entire save files ruined by game breaking bugs (such as my player character getting stuck in walls or clipping out of a bounds). As far as I'm aware the PC version is not nearly as much as a mess though.
Monster Sanctuary
Monster collecting meets metroidvania. Has a really fun skill tree type move learning system that allows for quite a bit of strategy. Also the monster designs are way less Pokemon and more inspired by traditional roleplay monsters (so there's like Goblins and stuff). My only gripe with the game is how you get monsters involves getting specific scores in battle which makes getting 1 of each monster way more tedious than it needed to be.
Fossil Fighters
Franchise is maybe dead since there hasn't been a new entry in it since the 3DS but its still easy enough to these games. Anyway this series involve reviving dinosaurs (and some other ancient animals) into new lifeforms called vivosaur and using them in 3 on 3 combat. Vivosaurs are obtained with a fossil digging minigame which is kinda neat.
Spectrobes
Another franchise that's been pretty dead for a while (it last entry was on the Wii). Spectrobes has a more sci fi like setting with its monsters being aliens you revive from fossils. Combat is real time and you participate alongside a couple of your monsters. I'm btw describing only the first game because I haven't played either sequel!
Evocreo
Mobile only monster game with a style similar to Pokemon Black and White not unlike Coromon mentioned above. Has a lot of focus on split path evolution. The devs are apparently going to release a sequel soon but its been in development hell for years so I'll come back and edit this if that actually happens.
Monster Hunter Stories
I have not played nor watched gameplay of this one so I can't really describe it that deeply all I know is its a spinoff of Monster Hunter involving befriending and using the titular monsters in combat.
Telefang
Its sad this game series is most famous for being badly translated and repackaged as a Pokemon game. Anyway these are Japanese only titles though fan translations exist. The gimmick of this game is that you call monsters up on your cellphone to get them over to participate in combat. This series this sprout out when cellphones were consider newfangled and hip so it makes sense.
Anode Heart
Pretty sure this one is PC only. Takes some inspiration from the Digimon World games and is semi open world. Sadly this one I don't know much about outside of that though it does have a free demo on Steam for anyone that wants to try it for themselves.
Ooblets
Extremely wholesome monster catching and farming game. Battles are actually dancing competitions instead of violent confrontations and monsters are recruited simply by beating them in a fight. Thing is monsters will only fight you if you offer them their favourite food so that's where strategy comes in.
Moonstone Island
I know very little about this one except its also a monster catching and farming game. I've heard that its really good though and I believe its PC only right now but has a planned Switch port.
Timenet
Probably the most obscure ass monster tamer on this entire list. This is a Japanese exclusive set of Gameboy games featuring very cute monster designs... and Hello Kitty. Yes Sanrio made a monster tamer back in the late 90s. I only learned this even existed after scrolling down a comment section on a random YouTube video.
Abomi Nation
I'm mostly excluding roguelike games due to most having nothing but battles an 0 plot but this one does actually has a story! You play as the actual monster as you make your way through somewhat randomly generated maps with lots of other randomized elements. The game allows for a lot of customization including turning off permadeath if you're not a fan of that. The visual style is a bit crude but its still a pretty cute game.
Jade Concoon
Another somewhat obscure entry but at least this one got an English release. Anyway its an old RPG for the PSX with monster capturing and a very fascinating monster fusing mechanic that uses an algorithm to determine the appearance of the fusion. The player character can also participate in battle and the plot is very complex. The game also has a sequel on the PS2 but I know even less about that one.
Robopon
Now if you thought Palworld was bordering on some copyright infringement this game is basically nothing but "Pokemon but the designs are robots". Still worth bringing up I think!
Ni No Kuni
Not sure how I got to mentioning several obscure titles and somehow didn't mention something that really isn't. Ni No Kuni is real time battles between you and 2 party members. You can both battle as the actual human characters or switch into a monster. Wrath of the White Witch's visual style in particular is very whimsical and even has some animated cutscene done by Studio Ghibli. I haven't played any other game in the franchise.
Siralim
I haven't played any entry in this series yet (there's apparently 4 games + a spinoff) but from reading up on the most recent entry these are basically procedurally generated dungeon crawlers with an insane level of depth. The story is apparently not that great but the games themselves apparently also make fun of it so it seems its an intentional dev choice. Battles are 6 on 6 and there's over 1000 monsters to collect.
Disc Creatures
A monster tamer with a visual style similar to the Gameboy and Gameboy Color. It has 3 on 3 combat. Impressively I'm pretty sure it was developed by just one person in the RPG Maker engine (I'm honestly surprised this is the first indie game made with ya know... an engine meant for turned based RPGs).
Monster Harvest
A Dungeon crawler mixed with farming. Its a bit shorter than anything else I've mentioned here and its a bit glitchy but its a cute little game worth picking up on sale at the least. Notably also only about a 1/3 of the monster in the game are combative with the rest being either used for farming resources or as mounts.
Loomian Legacy
A Roblox monster tamer.... yes there's 2 of those in this (I could even have added 3 but I think one is in still a pretty early state). Pretty sure this started as a Pokemon fangame and become its own thing later. It has your typical 1 on 1 turn based combat and all that. I think its free to play and there's like several hours of content on it so maybe worth a gander.
Tales of Tonorio
Pretty sure this is the same basic deal as Loomian (Roblox game, started as a Pokemon fan game, etc etc) though its has its own world building and creature designs since I'm pretty sure its made by a completely different team.
So yeah that's all of them I can think of right now. If I learn of others and/or there's new releases I may expand this.
PS: There is almost certainly numerous typoes in this. This post is way longer than anything else I've ever made on Tumblr so I can't be arse to fix them you're just going to have to deal!

デジモンゴストゲーム48話ご視聴ありがとうございました!
Thank you for watching Digimon Ghost Game episode 48!
This time around I handled layouts and 2nd key animation for the scene of Kiyoshiro eating his mushrooms and TeslaJellymon powering up. I’m so happy a lil bit of my animation got to share screentime with the song First Riders. I love that song so much. You can watch some of my section here. This weekend marks my 9th episode for Ghost Game, and a year since the first episode I worked on aired, episode #3. It’s been such an incredibly fun and stressful journey, my life has changed so much since then, it’s so crazy to think about it. Thank you all for your support!! As always longer thought after the cut.
MUSHROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMS So many mushrooms. I love the body horror aspects of this episode, it felt incredibly intense, but by god drawing all those mushrooms took so much time, I was so stressed and tired by the end of it.  I’m just glad it came out ok. I’m a very slow animator, so usually the last cuts I draw I need to rush for the deadline, which means usually the movement isn’t as well realised as it could. I don’t think it’s super obvious from an outside perspective, but knowing intimately how these cuts work just makes me unable to look at them without a bout of anxiety kicking in. But now onto the positives. I think the section with Kiyo and Teslajellymon powering up came out ok. It doesn’t quite flow as I imagined, but it’s still pretty fun to look at I feel like. One of the things I noticed is that the dialogue in my head sounded a bit different, I think in the final version TeslaJellymon sounds almost flirty, and I wasn’t expecting that.  Some details I wanna mention about my cuts:
Tumblr media
The poses themselves were following the storyboard and animation supervisor’s drawings, but the overall flow of the scene I was inspired by Henry’s Matrix Evolution BANK animation, done by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru for Digimon Tamers. I was actually surprised they made the lighting effects green, they were blue in the storyboard. I wonder if the photography department or director caught my source of inspiration and decided to match the visuals a little bit more.
Tumblr media
It’s a bit hard to see but I drew Thetismon into the lightning effects. I was a bit bummed that I didn’t get to draw her, so I tried to sneak her into one of my cuts. She is super fun.  And that’s it!  At the time this was the hardest thing I had ever animated, but the thing I am animating right now is the new hardest thing so be on the lookout for when that airs! Take care :3

Digimon Tamers - Volume 2
It turns out this series is super out of print and rare. My library only has the first 2 volumes, so I'll be reading the rest after this one online (if you want to buy it it's like $80-$100 per volume!) It's a little bit of a relief honestly, because the volume that I got from the library is pretty crusty and battered. I think I saw some dried shredded cheese on some of the pages 🤢 Really shows who the audience is.
Ch. 8
This manhua has really bad continuity and no sense of space. Characters will just pop out of nowhere. Culumon is the worst offender, but in this chapter there were a bunch of dramatic scenes between Rika and Renamon and then it just randomly turned out that Takato and Jian were watching the whole time but not saying anything? Riiiight.
I was really confused at the end and thought that Yamaki was saying he created a digimon but it was actually a really clumsy flashback to the original digimon programmers. Confusing panels...
Ch 9
Wow, the Devas arc already, it obviously felt like it took a lot longer to get here in the anime. I wonder if they'll do all the Devas or condense them/do some off screen?
At least one thing that's nice about this manga is that I can take in the Devas designs without them jumping around too much.
Ch. 10
Some of these jokes are flying over my head. Takato tries to name his group of friends "team rock" and he mentions "a skinny guy on TV who talks about the power of positive thinking." I wish they would cut out the unfunny, outdated material and just tell the damn story >:/
Worst boys Hirokazu and Kenta show up to reestablish themselves as part of the party...yaaay
Didn't realize that MegaloGrowmon was called WarGrowlmon in the dub. I guess it is kind of nice to keep the naming conventions more consistent. "Megalo" is sort of a weird prefix (megalomania?)
Ch. 11
I'm still obsessed with Jian's computer that can read trading cards as if they were CD-ROMs. I wish that technology existed!
Two perfect evolutions in one chapter? Pretty rushed but okay...they still looked cool. (Taomon and Rapidmon). I think the Wonderswan card game rot my brain a little cuz when I saw Rapidmon I was thinking about all the option cards I could use with him.
Ch. 12
Other than my fave Antylamon, I think Indramon is the most memorable of all the devas. His design is really unique, he's massive, and he kicks the shit outta Impmon. I like his emo hair too lol
When they realize that Hirokazu's homemade blue card works I'm surprised they didn't move onto a counterfeit card making scheme after that. I just it only works if it was made with pure intentions or something.
Ch. 13
Why is Juri's dub name "Jeri" when "Julie" was right there?
Damn, they really killed any suspense with Makuramon's intro there. In the anime he's presented as a kid at first but here they showed him as a kid but then slapped the name tag "Makuramon" right next to him...
They skipped a bunch because Juri just magically knows that Guilmon exists. They showed Hirokazu and Kenta meeting him, but not her. Oh well, I guess.
Ch. 14
Calling Juri, Hirokazu and Kenta "groupies" is pretty funny, not gonna lie. So accurate.
I like that they're clearly ID-ing each deva as its corresponding zodiac animal. I think there was a little bit of that in the anime, but not as spelled out as it is here. Usually I don't like to be spoon fed, but there's something satisfying about them saying "that's the boar, that's the monkey, etc."

Weekly Digimon Comic: Digimon Tamers - page 0
Heck yeah I'm gonna reuse the art from that one print I did in this comic! I'm dang proud of it!
But yeah, it's hard for me to fully express how much Tamers came along and hit me at JUST the perfect moment to dig itself deeeeeeep into my psyche. I was already a bit older than the target audience for both Pokemon and Digimon, but even if I wasn't, I'd probably still have imprinted HARD on the idea that my favorite show seemed to be growing up with me. Heck, if I hadn't been trying to conserve space in this comic, there would have been one more set of panels where Young Me is impressed by the very fact that 02 actually allowed the cast of Adventure to age at all. For dweebs desperate to prove they weren't kids anymore, yet still insisted on watching cartoons meant to sell toys to children, Tamers felt like an absolute godsend.
Also, I think the next comic is going to be "page 0.5" because I somehow have one MORE thing to get off my chest before digging into episode 1 directly. In fact, even after YEARS of doing this kind of thing, it's somehow only just occurred to me in the past week or two that I can just slap a ".5" on the end of a page number and do multiple comics on the same episode while still keeping the numbers MOSTLY in sync. And oh man, that's something it looks like I'll be doing a lot in the future. There's five more comics already up on Patreon and I only just finished watching episode TWO.
...and YOU could be reading all those comics right now if you became a patron! INCREDIBLY SUBTLE AND NATURAL PLUG! Conventional Wisdom / Patreon

Odaiba Memorial
Tumblr media
Okay. It is August 1st and as such it is Odaiba Memorial Day. So, for once I give myself the chance to just ramble a bit about Digimon, which to this autistic dude was his longest hyperfixation.
You know, in 2000 Digimon got to the German TV station, that was basically airing all the anime over here. I still gotta say, that the ad campaign they did for it, was unwise and would most certainly fire up the entire "Digimon vs Pokémon" thing here in Germany.
It went like this: "Pokémon ist der Wahn! Digimon ist der MEGAWAHN!" (translated: "Pokémon is the craze! Digimon is the mega craze!") So, as a Pokémon fan I instantly went like: "It can never be better then Pokémon!" But... not soon after I got sick with the flu and spent the afternoon sitting in front of the TV and watched Digimon. It was the final episode of the Devimon arc, so episode 13 and I... was instantly hooked. And then went on to watch it religiously.
A year later I finally got access to the internet. More specifically I was allowed to use the computer rooms at the local university during the weekends. And while I used it to learn programming, I also used it to download all the anime. lol And guess what? Digimon Tamers was just out. And while I was hooked on Adventure, that was nothing compared to Digimon Tamers.
I always loved card games and the series incorporating the card game was a big plus. But also, there was Ruki. And Ruki to me back then was the kind of female character I needed in my life. A confident, stubborn girl, who was just so cool. Like so fucking cool. I mean, look at her.
Tumblr media
And, yeah. Digimon to me was the thing that kinda kept me alive throughout my entire youth. I watched and rewatched and then rewatched again the series. Especially Digimon Tamers. Any Digimon news would make me super excited and obviously I learned all the Digimon names, levels and types, because that is what the autistic brains does when hyperfixating on something.
While no longer my biggest fanfic project, my biggest writing project at the time back then was Digimon Tamers Generations, a sequel to Digimon Tamers consisting of Digimon Alpha Generation (7 years post-canon) and Digimon Battle Generation (10 years post canon).
Like look at these little idiots. (They are the main characters from Digimon Battle Generation.)
Tumblr media
So, yeah... Digimon really meant a lot to me for a very long time. Does, in fact, still mean a lot to me, even though I am not quite as obsessive about it as I was before. Mostly because I am now obsessing about Castlevania xD
But yeah, man. Digimon is great. And there are just so many great memories connected to it.
For the most part, I would never have started writing, if it was not for Digimon. So I will be forever thankful to it for this reason alone!

Okay,so,I have no idea if you have watched digimon savers/data squad, but I’ll just pretend you did for this and my long rant about how tohma H. Norstein is a rival done right(despite not being evil)
Right of the bat we have clashing with the character concepts alone, masaru has agumon meanwhile tohma has Gaomon(a digimon that seems to be a gabumon equivalent thanks to the fact that it most commonly has tsunomon as its baby ll,that being gabumon’s iconic baby ll form),tohma having blue and masaru having red, tohma having a somewhat strained relationship with his family(only having an especially good bond with Relena) and masaru being really close with his family, both of them having a dead/missing parent, shinegreymon being an equivalent to wargreymon(who evolves into a royal knight) and miragegaogamon who is a wielder of the digital hazard, who if you’ve seen tamers and frontier you will know is/can be/will be bad news.
Right of the bat sabers has so many parallels between them, making them completely different without making tohma evil, meanwhile still making him a good counter to masaru for the first porción of the show.
The problem with Thomas’ writing of Lila and Chloe is that he feels that he needs to make them evil to be good rivals when...no.all you need to do to make a good rival is make them parallel the protagonist enough so that they can be a good counter to them, and I feel like it’s this ideology that led to chloe’s damnation arc, because he knew that Lila was only a direct counter to ladybug and he needed a counter for marinette.
You make a lot of solid points there, but then again, Digimon is usually good when it comes to writing rivals.

It's been 7 years since Yuko Mizutani passed away, and yet whenever I watch the OG Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02, it sometimes hurts to hear Sora talk, specifically because I know that Yuko is gone. 😢 She's still deeply missed. And I just love this fanart of Sora gaining angel wings while Taichi (her best friend) and Yamato (her future husband) gently push her towards Heaven.
And, since Yuko died from breast cancer in 2016...
And Toshiko Fujita (the original voice actress for Taichi Yagami in Adventure, Adventure 02, and Xros Wars) also died from breast cancer in 2018...
And Kouji Wada (the singer who performed all of the opening theme songs and some of the closing theme songs and insert songs for Adventure, Adventure 02, Tamers, Frontier, Savers, Xros Wars, and Adventure Tri) died from nasopharynx cancer in 2016, a month before Yuko...
And Takanori Arisawa (the music composer for Adventure, Adventure 02, Tamers, and Frontier) died from bladder cancer in 2005...
All I can say is: FUCK CANCER.
Additionally, since I first started watching Digimon via the English dub, years before I had access to the original Japanese version, I personally want to acknowledge and commemorate the staff members of the English dub who have also passed away:
Paul Gordon (the music composer for the English dub of Adventure, Adventure 02, and Tamers) died from heart disease/heart failure in 2016.
Bob Papenbrook (who played various voice roles for the English dub of Adventure, Adventure 02, Tamers, and Frontier) died from chronic lung problems in 2006.
Mike Reynolds (the original English dub voice actor for Old Gennai in Adventure and Adventure 02, as well as a screenwriter for a few episodes of Adventure) died from undisclosed circumstances in 2022 (although, considering he was 92 when he passed away, it was most likely due to natural causes/old age).
Philece Sampler (the original English dub voice actress for Mimi Tachikawa and Iori Hida in Adventure, Adventure 02, and Adventure Tri, as well as a few smaller roles in Tamers, Frontier, and Savers, such as Alice McCoy and Nanami) died from a heart attack in 2021.
Robert Axelrod (the original English dub voice actor for Wizarmon and Armadimon in Adventure and Adventure 02) died from long-term complications from spinal surgery in 2019.
Michael Lindsay (the original English dub voice actor for Jou Kido and Greymon in Adventure and Adventure 02, as well as Gottsumon in Savers) died from undisclosed circumstances in 2019.
May you all rest in peace. 🙏

How do you think a Angewomon and a Gulusgammamon would react to her tamer successfully pulling Masaru/Marcus Daimon and knocking a digimon to the ground. Bonus points if it's a kid tamer lol
Angewomon
Angewomon doesn't like it when her Tamer is too close to dangers that she is trying to face. She would feel horrible if her Tamer was hurt while she was trying to protect them when that's what she was supposed to prevent from happening. As quick as she can be, it can be tough when there's more than one Digimon.
And so... one can imagine her surprise when she looks over in concern for her Tamer's safety as she's fending off one Digimon, to see the other that went after her Tamer being knocked to the ground, her Tamer standing victoriously over them.
If she knew her Tamer could do such a thing, she might not have been so adamant about keeping them out of danger. Of course, she still feels inclined to keep them safe, but now Angewomon doesn't have to worry too badly if there are multiple Digimon. She still does, don't get her wrong! But after witnessing such a feat, she isn't sure how to feel on it....
GulusGammamon
GulusGammamon could care less how close his Tamer gets to battles. Usually, they're over before they even begin. With speed and power like he has, near no Digimon stand a chance against him. He just lets his Tamer tag along with him at this point if anything, and refuses to let any Digimon who says anything about them or tries to eat them go.
When his Tamer suddenly strikes a Digimon that was coming at them while GulusGammamon was handling another Digimon, sending them and knocking them onto the ground... he actually feels a moment of pure, actual surprise. Did he just watch that right? Well now, that's what he expected out of a Tamer! Especially one that travels with him by his side!
GulusGammamon more or less encourages his Tamer to do that much more often, it would mean that he wouldn't have to swoop in and constantly save them if they could handle themself in such a manner. It amuses him at the idea, though, on how many Digimon will feel when they're knocked over by a human before being dealt with by GulusGammamon...

The WIPpening, 2024 (WIP tag game)
"Rules: In a new post, post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! And then tag as many people as you have WIPs."

Howdy! I was tagged by @faeriekit! (This was fun, thank you!) Likewise, I also have a Dragon's Hoard worth of WIP's that I've been collecting since the early 2000's, but I'll list the ones I've worked on lately (read: being consistently worked on over the past year or so). I'll condense them to the most active and you're welcome to send me an ask about them.
Holy War is on the Phone (Danny Phantom x My Hero Academia)
The Wolf in Paradise (Batman)
Rockin' Robin (Batman x Batman Beyond x My Hero Academia)
Still you Stand, Sturdy and Smelling of Smoke (Spider-man (Tom Holland) x Batman)
Shield and Hearth (title may change?) (TMNT x Demon Slayer)
Are you there, God? It's me, Kuwabara Kazuma (Yu Yu Hakusho x Demon Slayer)
Then Again to Ash (My Hero Academia)
Essays on T-Posing to Assert Dominance Over [other] Pagan Deities (Batman x MCU)
Threads (title may change?) (Dragon Ball Z/Super)
Better, Not More (Demon Slayer)
[To Me] You Will Be Unique In All The World (Digimon Tamers)
Red Devil Rowdy (title may change?) (DCU x Danny Phantom x Scooby-Doo x Supernatural)
And Longer if I Can (TMNT; Sequel to As Long As Stars Are Above You)
Carnation Burn (title may change?) (Demon Slayer)
A Wine Dark Sea (title may change?) (DCU x My Hero Academia)
(I am just now realizing that I have more crossovers than anything else lmao. Imprint was a gateway fic.) I'm also going through a mild My Hero binge because I was gifted some of the manga and I'm trying to watch as I read (also the cast is just fun??).
-Throws out tags- If you've already done this challenge or don't have an interest in participating, please ignore me and go about your day lmao. (also, sorry in advance if I'm tagging the wrong blog, I'm still figuring out how this damn site works): @halfagone @nerdpoe @zylev-blog @gilbirda
Also, consider this "@" an invitation to do your own if you're a writer yourself and I missed tagging you (Hopefully this is...legal? I don't know. I don't think I've done something like this yet lmao)

Hi. I'm someone who has been planning to rewatch Digimon Frontiers. I remember watching it as a kid, but hoping to rewatch it as an adult to see how it still holds up. Before that though, I've been wondering about how that series has treated Izumi in light of a lot of the fandom's complaints about her. I've only watched the American English dub, but I am wondering about why she was written as she was and how it differs from the Japanese version. I also saw your meta on the writers for her episodes, honestly surprised that her episodes were written by female writers. I can use your perspective on why she was written that way since you seem more knowledgeable about the franchise as a whole.
I'm also curious how much romance has actually been a thing in the Digimon franchise, or if it is mainly just a small subplot that's usually kept in the back.
I appreciate any information you can give.
Hello! Thank you for dropping by!
Regarding Frontier and Izumi, to be honest, I don't really think there are too many substantial differences between the American English dub and original Japanese version to the point I could make any in-depth analysis. (There are changes, but it's in a very vague blanket realm of "the insults and bantering are a little harsher", and it's definitely not Adventure or 02 level.) The Japanese version has the infamous "Sexy Dynamite" frame, so one might argue that it was even worse about it, but small details aside, I think the good points and the complaints you could make are pretty much the same.
As for why the writing around Izumi is so glaring compared to prior (and perhaps most other) Digimon series, I honestly can't say. As far as female creator presence in the main staff room goes, as you mentioned, Izumi's key episodes were by female writers, and Seki was still producer. And on top of that, while Tomita fully admitted that he had a hard time writing girls, I honestly can't believe that's the (sole?) cause of it when I look at his other portfolio works, including some fan-favorite episodes of Sailor Moon and, in general, some magical girl series with excellent female characters.
Perhaps it's the fact that it's the first Digimon anime series to not have any involvement from Yoshimura Genki (who was responsible for most of the writing around Ruki in Tamers and is currently known as a hardcore feminist), or perhaps Bandai panicking about the franchise's poor sales made them lock down harder on "we need to Please the Boys" (something that does sometimes end up in being neglectful of female characters), or perhaps the fact that Izumi was the only girl in the core group made them more inclined to treat her like the Designated Girl Character™ of the series...but this is all speculation, and your guess is as good as mine, especially since we have so little information on Frontier's production compared to others.
As for the question on romance, it's pretty much always been a subplot at best, most likely because the majority of major human characters in the franchise are elementary to middle school age and are thus way too young to be considering "serious" romance or relationships (middle school being probably the youngest you can push the limit as treating a relationship as "serious" instead of just being a puppy crush). Moreover, Adventure and 02 seemed to take the stance of "romance is a part of one's life, but not the most important thing in one's life" (something that seems to have frustrated a lot of fans regarding the series not caring enough about shipping), so even stuff related to Yamato and Sora is carefully squared off to the side like it's not anyone's business. As much as I like to make ship-related jokes, if asked in a serious context, I personally never believed that most of anyone's behavior towards anyone in Adventure or 02 had legitimate romantic sentiment behind it, mostly because they were too young for it; even Daisuke's crush on Hikari comes off to me as him being clingy because she's cute and not really taking the time to think about what the next steps would entail.
Other than Yamato and Sora, putting one-sided humorous crushes aside, the closest to explicit depictions of (human) romance that actually seem plot-relevant would probably be Takato and Juri in Tamers, which even then is not really that explicit (although the people involved in its creation love to talk about it like it's a sort of damsel-in-distress plot), and Kiriha and Nene in the Xros Wars manga, which also is prominent and related to the plot but also not that big of an element in it. Sometimes it seems like it's milking the concept of romance more than it's usually done in practice (an episode of Savers is styled like it's Yoshino having a love story with a childhood friend, but if you actually watch the episode it's at most just her having mixed feelings about a childhood friend falling from grace). So it's honestly been a series that's hands-off with romance for the most part, with most of the shipping and romance-related content being on the part of the fans.
By the way, the official reason there's no explicit depiction of Yamato and Sora in Kizuna (despite them being a known endgame canon couple) is that it would have been overly conspicuous and obstructive in a movie that only had 90 minutes to tell its story. (I know there are a lot of people who think the real reason is "because it was controversial and they don't want to get people mad," but personally, I feel that if they were worrying about controversy, they wouldn't have given Kizuna such a controversial premise in the first place!) So I imagine that's the main reason we've gotten so little romance; it's exactly because it's such a crowd-pleaser and overly conspicuous element that they want to avoid it, because Digimon is frankly a complex franchise with a lot of expectations and mechanics that it needs to worry more about, and it's hard to cram a prominent romance plot in there in a way that would be tonally appropriate.

You know, in theory I can understand not liking a show switching from plot to no plot. I love Digimon, but I find the tonal change in Digimon Tamers really rough upon rewatch, the way we go from "kids and their monsters and friendships" to "mankind has created something that may end the world as we know it and our fate is in the hands of the next generation to undo our mistakes". And although I love Digimon Tamers, I know tons of people who don't like it, precisely because the genre shifted hard and the tone along with it.
But people who don't like it don't act like it's evil, or problematic, or the worst thing that could ever happen to the franchise. People in the Digimon fandom who dislike Digimon Tamers just don't engage with it. They don't tear it down and say no series should get that serious or have that plot or have any plot at all. Instead, fandom consensus is that it was flawed but ultimately deserves respect for trying something distinct and different from the franchise's previous formula. I have had people who say they hate Digimon Tamers also say to me that they think it was a net positive because it let the creators of the franchise explore themes they hadn't gotten the chance to before. I've had people who loathe the main character say they liked that the series didn't keep rehashing the same personality type the leads had prior. And lots of people who dislike it simply never talk about it at all, because they prefer to focus on parts of the franchise they like. Also, even Digimon fans who think it's the worst entry in the franchise don't tear into the creators of it - if anything, an ongoing joke among Tamers fans and haters is that this is exactly what you get when you hire writers used to writing for dark visual novels and hand them this series. There's no blaming or assuming the writers are bad people, it's just, "Well, what did we expect?"
And I guess why Lily's garbage is so tiring is that she doesn't do that. She doesn't go, "It had some good points, but ultimately I didn't care for it. I dislike it but I'm sure the staff did their best." Instead she builds things up to be the end of all that is good artistically and morally in the world and caps it off with unveiled, open contempt for everyone involved in the production.
Yes, her anger is just as often performance as it is real. But it's still ridiculous either way, it doesn't stop being illogical, over the top, toxic and utterly unnecessary just because it's fake.
I get that she may genuinely dislike shows having a plot or having a tone shift. I do not understand going, "So I'm going to keep watching things I hate, act hysterical, and lose my shit on camera again and again like a howler monkey at the zoo yelling for treats." I understand even less than that the idea that disliking a piece of media makes it bad or means anything about the people who worked on the show.
If I try butterscotch ice cream and hate it, that means I don't like butterscotch. It doesn't mean the ice cream man is a monster and that butterscotch existing at all is a mistake.

i agreed with you until you said ghost game was better than all the non adventure anime
savers is really good
Savers is really good and definitely one of the more underrated Digimon series. I should probably go back to it sometime since there were elements I did enjoy, like the premise and the story. I didn't really latch on to any of the characters though and for me that's probably the number one thing I care about, which is why I would rate both Adventure and Ghost Game higher in my personal list.
Since you've brought up different series, it's made me think about my own biases to each series and why I have them and how the way one is introduced to a series can make such a difference on their impression of a show.
There seems to be this push recently (...ok, last decade) in fandom for fans to be more objective in their thoughts and feelings on a piece of media. I'm not really sure why, since the whole point of fandom is about being stupidly passionate about something and finding others who support that passion. I've tried being in fandoms where almost all the most-active members would do is analyse and critique every new work that came out. It was frankly exhausting to try and be a part of. That's not to say one can't criticise something, but in my own experience it tends to snuff out creativity in smaller fandoms.
So as a counter to that, here's my personal opinions on each Digimon series and how the way I approached each season likely shaped my viewing. Warning for lots of rambling and bias.
Interacting with media, whether they're books, TV shows or films among others, is deeply personal. The main reason I gave up doing write ups of each episode of Ghost Game wasn't because I stopped enjoying the show, but because I didn't get anything from writing my thoughts out in such a way. I've always preferred the fanfiction and fanart side of Fandom, rather than the side that analyses every scene and critiques and speculates, although I appreciate why others enjoy that.
Like probably many that still hold the original Adventure in their top spot, I started watching it at a very impressionable time. I had watched one non-episodic series before, so a plot going over a whole series in a cartoon was pretty new to me and I loved it. I started watching Digimon during the Myotismon arc at a time when there was no easy way to quickly catch up with a series without trying to tune into every episode on TV I could find. I honestly don't think I would've stuck around if I'd started watching the series sooner, but it's difficult to know for sure. By that point the dubbing changes were less obvious, although still there, and I absolutely fell in love with the characters, the settings and the plot about a bunch of kids around my age trying to save the world with all their virtues and flaws exposed. It's stuck with me even as an adult, so even if an objectively better Digimon series came along, I think it would still be an uphill battle to dislodge Adventure from the top.
I watched almost all of Adventure 02 and Tamers as they came out: weekly episodes that I sometimes had to miss due to other commitments. Unfortunately, I missed the finale of Tamers and it was literal years until I saw the final two episodes. I've done rewatches of both since and have an appreciation for them, but they just highlighted how much I missed the original Adventure kids. Is that fair? Not really. I also didn't particularly like what they did to Rika or Jeri in Tamers who were basically the only reason I kept watching (especially the former). I also wasn't a fan of the final arc, but get why others did like it.
Frontier is a weird one because I will fully admit I rate this one too highly on my personal lists compared to what it deserves. I saw it at a time when I was moving... a lot, so pretty much only saw a handful of episodes from the first half. But again, I loved the characters and I got enough of a hint of the story with Kouji and Kouichi that I was really intrigued. When I finally watched the rest of the series in it's total I was pretty disappointed like many that half the cast was side-lined and the sexism with Zoe/Izumi was pretty off-putting. Still, the initial potential of the series will always stick with me.
Savers was the first series I watched through online so went through binges and breaks as I caught up with episodes. As I said at the start, it was good, but just didn't leave an impression in the same way. Some of that was probably because I just went through episodes, leaving little time to contemplate them after. And the characters didn't hook me the same way.
I've not finished Fusion/Hunters or Appmon. The first dragged like many Digimon series and I found trying to get to where the plot picked up difficult, and Appmon was... loud. I don't think I've ever hated the partnership/evolutions scenes before, which has made viewing more than an episode at a time a real struggle and doesn't particularly leave me wanting more, despite promising characters. Both would've benefitted from me being able to watch in weekly episodes, but I missed Fusion's release and I had held out on Appmon, hoping it would be distributed legally given Tri. was.
Tri, Adventure: and Ghost Game I watched as they were released. I personally really enjoyed Tri. although understand the criticism that fans have. Given it was made by a new team, though, I never had expectations for it to feel the exact same as Adventure and I really appreciated them trying new things even if it didn't always work. In contrast, Adventure: seemed to lean too heavily on nostalgia rather than trying to be it's own thing. The expectations for the latter were too difficult for me to overcome, which is why I dropped the series about half way through. I do appreciate the pandemic may have messed with their original plans though.
And finally Ghost Game. I don't think I've hidden that I was originally disappointed when learning the series was going to be episodic and focussed on getting in new fans. I interpreted that as most of the episodes were going to be stand-alone so a new viewer could pick up the series at any point, which probably appropriately set my expectations. It was designed so someone could drop in part-way through the series without needing to go back to the beginning a bit like how TV shows aired when Digimon first started. Was it a good idea? I'm not sure, but for me I liked the comparatively low stakes in contrast to the others, while being more "realistic" on the consequences of humans and digimon trying to live together - something Tamers tried to do, but I personally thought was less successful in because it focussed more on the action and consequences to the kids rather than wider society. Ghost Game is also the first Digimon series I've watched where I feel I could stitch together a completely different story while still keeping to canon, which offers some great fanfiction possibilities I hope might get explored. I'll fully admit I was pretty surprised and disappointed a new Digimon show wasn't announced on the back of it, since it felt like Ghost Game was going to be the gateway for new fans, but with lots of newer series taking months or years off in between seasons, maybe continuity just isn't as important anymore.
Digimon has been around long enough it has a wide range of viewers since, unlike a series such as Pokémon that sticks to a formulae, it's constantly trying new things. It means some series will work for you and some will not quite resonate.
And that's a good thing!

Digimon Tamers - Episode 13
Whelp I guess they used up all the budget for episode 12 because this one was really bad. Like unpleasant to watch at times bad. You can't tell from my screenshots, but most of this episode was composed of still images, extreme close ups, and lazy silhouettes. Oh well, this is just the nature of these older, long-ish shows.
Notes:
So from the opening shot I knew this was gonna be a rough one. An overly long silhouetted battle between Guilmon and...some other digimon they didn't feel like animating properly lol. The shot that annoyed me the most though was the scene where Takato is talking with his teacher and the camera is zoomed out on their basically still bodies. Takato's teacher is frozen in this unnatural pose with her hand on her face for waaaay too long. I was like "MOVE!" There was a similar shot at Jian's family's dinner table where one of his sisters was frozen, smiling at the screen while everyone else was moving. These are the things I notice as an adult lol. Really takes you out of it.
Since there was so little animation, this episode compensated with a lot of talk with HYPNOS rambling on about their latest plans. I had to keep rewinding because there was a lot of jargon and I would zone out because there was nothing to look at on screen. The worst offender was the "Zoom call" (I know Zoom wasn't a thing) between the main HYPNOS dude and his colleagues. I thought maybe the images on screen were supposed to be profile photos because they didn't move, but then they moved slightly! Were those supposed to be live videos?? Was one guy just in "swinging-a-golf-club" pose for like 10 minutes straight? They should have just kept them still at that point...
Tumblr media
The writing for Asanuma-sensei is so weird. She tells Takato that she thinks she "made a mistake" becoming a teacher. Uh...TMI! You don't say that to your 10 year old student! And then Takato agrees with her, which was so shady lol. I guess I wasn't wrong when I said she sounded dead inside.
Juri's Guilmon doodle was adorable. Glad she's sticking up for Takato. I like her little dog puppet, but can't help but feel if she did that IRL she'd get bullied :/
I really don't like the HYPNOS ladies. Their jobs are just too vague and they don't really have personalities. They always look off-model too.
So...main HYPNOS guy is racist?? Suggesting that Jian's family should pronounce their names the JAPANESE way. Geez. You don't see racism brought up too often in anime unless it's fantasy racism, so I found that interesting. Since their names were Americanized in the dub, I guess its probably left out.
So Jian's dad was one of the creators of Digimon like Oikawa? I didn't see that coming. Definitely the most intriguing revelation of the episode. If he knows about Digimon then...wouldn't he realize that Terriermon is one?
Impmon telling Culumon that his "culu culu" gimmick is annoying was satisfying not gonna lie lol. I want to see more of the two of them together.
Chinese characters always seem to have big families in anime. I guess that's the stereotype in Japan. Seems weird to me because of the old "one child" policy, but what do I know? (I guess Chinese immigrants in Japan would be a different story).
Sooo...mysterious ending with Terriermon acting hypnotized (haha HYPNOS...get it?) Kind of alarming since he was smacking into the window. I was struggling to digest the explanation but I think HYPNOS is baiting the digimon so that they can destroy them?
We get some hint of a potential big bad because one of the enemy digimon mentions his "God..." They're sure taking their time to cut to the chase with this one.
