Saltburn makes me wanna throw up. Not because it's perverted (it's not really, it's just got a little cinnamon). No it's got so much symbolism and folklore in that it makes me wanna vibrate out of my skin and I'm not even a folkorist

the thing is that i genuinely think the idea of batburger in current continuity is kind of dumb (jokerize the fries, rolling my eyes) partially because it's clear it's a concept so you can have 5 panels go viral for humor partially because the way everyone's fast and loose with secret id's in the field they may as well have a bruce wayne burger on the menu-
but there's a part of me that thinks that the concept of batburger (sans jokerize the fries, because again. rolling my eyes) would have been absolutely hilarious and on-brand for 90s comics during the urban myth era.
because fast food today is nothing compared to the branding and advertising of fast food era of the 80s and 90s. like when mcd's got swarmed for the teenie beanies by collectors causing fights and injuries over kids meal toys??? you could never see that kind of passion today.
imagine. you are a local businessman in gotham. you are trying to think of a fast food restaurant to market to 10 year olds. you hear of a local urban legend that all the kids are talking about, the batman, and you've decided you've struck gold. you get to work. batburger. you make mascots a la ronald mcdonald and the crew, but you don't have any idea what the batman actually looks like so you just make it up based on what would appeal to kids and make them want to eat your food. i imagine your batman has vampire teeth or is literally a man dressed in a bat costume. your robin is a man dressed up as a literal robin. you make a tv show about them where the crimes they solve are the mystery of the missing fries. you have commercials. there is no copyright on batman as a concept. bruce wayne is powerless to stop you. when you do a special limited edition superhero toy series in your robin meals, collectors come and start a riot. batman comes to break it up.

When I was a kid, there was a constant male presence in my life. I learned from him. I laughed with him. I cried with him. And I endeavoured to gain his respect. No, it wasn't my father. Outside of school, my mentor was Martin Yan.
Maybe you haven't met him. He's a dude who was on public-access TV a lot in the 80s and 90s. His schtick? Cooking show. He'd bang together some insane delicacies in about twenty to thirty minutes. Bad jokes all the time. Once in awhile, you'd get to go on a field trip to figure out how to buy fresh prawns, or see what pigs look like on the inside.
Of course, he made use of all the tricks of television. Tricks like "not actually eating what you didn't cook long enough to a food-safe temperature" and "mysteriously procuring a plate of finished food from behind the counter to replace the stuff that's still frying." I never felt tricked, though. He'd always admit it, which was a step above the rest of the TV cooks. Legitimacy. That was big back then.
Every adult will tell you that you must never meet your heroes. That's advice you only learn the value of when you stow away on a Greyhound bus headed towards San Francisco to catch a taping. It was the same old story you've heard a thousand times from other once-kids: I arrived well before the show, but just in time to see my idol beating Jacques Pepin to within an inch of his life with a baseball bat. Some kind of argument over onion slicing techniques, how much of the skin was usable in the meal. Pepin went down, hard. I was frozen in fear, too scared to check if he was still alive. Didn't want to give myself away.
I stayed for the rest of the taping, though. He made chicken stewed in a fruit sauce, a really delightful and unexpected combination that still hewed close to traditional Hong Kong cooking. Jacques Pepin showed up about halfway through the episode to shake his hand, but he seemed reserved and distant. Bruises hidden from the camera by makeup. Scared, too, probably, shaking so much we could see it in the studio audience, but didn't want to break the spell of the magic of television.
Everything turned out great in the end. The sauce was a hit when I got back home, and kept Family Services out of my living room for another year or two before they figured out that my folks really weren't coming back from their last attempt to get hired as trapeze artists.

hi icy!!
11. three favourite songs from movie or TV series soundtrack
OH WHAT A QUESTION FOR ME oh god oh fuck I have to only pick 3 shitttt. I am such a soundtrack fan arghhh. okay. I'll limit myself to one track per movie/tv series
the way he looks at me - trent reznor and atticus ross (gone girl soundtrack)
I love the entire gone girl soundtrack but this one is especially haunting. I'd been listening to it for months on end and somehow it took me that long to notice that in this track in particular, you can hear the sounds of someone choking layered under the music. if you've seen the movie, the point where this song plays makes this choking sound effect especially disturbing
container park - the chemical brothers (hanna soundtrack)
ngl this movie is kind of mid but the soundtrack is one of my all time favorites it goes so hard, choosing just one song was so difficult
okay this last one. don't make fun of me. I'm linking the youtube video because spotify doesn't have the proper movie version
bella's lullaby - carter burwell (twilight)
youtube
look if there's one thing I think most of us can agree on regarding twilight is that the soundtrack goes hard. I first watched twilight when I was 10 years old and this track has always been one of my favorite things from it. it's just such a gorgeous piano composition
ok putting the rest under the cut so this ask doesn't get too long on the dash
24. three favourite old songs
okay while there are a lot of definitions of 'old' (like is 80s considered old? 90s? 70s?) I'll decide to really go old school and stick to 60s songs because I do have a fondness for 60s music
california soul - marlena shaw
my mom used to play this all the time when I was a kid and for some reason I hated it (I have no clue why, I think because my mom just played it on repeat and I got annoyed) until one day I loved it
compared to what - roberta flack
heard this in a movie and it's been one of my favorites ever since
son of a preacher man - dusty springfield
and this is another one my mom showed me :)
21. three songs of your childhood
pumped up kicks - foster the people
if you were listening to the radio in 201-2012 you know why this is here
it wasn't me - shaggy
gonna be so honest I don't know why me and my 11-12 year old friends listened to this song so much given the subject matter but it definitely gives me a big bout of childhood nostalgia
counting stars - onerepublic
similar to pumped up kicks, if you were listening to the radio in the early 2010s you know why this is here
ask game!

Do you have any TV show recommendations
my #1 tv show recommendation is to watch the challenge. i literally never cared about competition reality shows besides antm and now i am Obsessed because the challenge is perhaps the greatest show of our generation. i beg of you to watch this compilation video it captures the overall spirit of the show So well and it's also hilarious.
if you want recommendations on which season to start with PLEASE send me another ask, or ask sarah @steveharrington she's the expert.
ok now other shows ❤️ i'm not gonna mention shows like succession that are super big on tumblr or well-known prestige television like breaking bad or the sopranos because i'm sure you've already seen plenty of people recommending those yknow? so yeah.
cowboy bebop (anime). the live action does not exist to me. anyway. cowboy bebop is sci-fi. it's western. it's jazz. it's comedy. it's tragedy. it's about love and identity and bounty hunting and a little corgi. there's a reason why it's often called one of the greatest anime of all time. this kinda violates my no reccing super popular shows rule but i think people who don't watch much anime may not be familiar with cowboy bebop so i figured i have a duty to the people.
the get down. i wholeheartedly believe that the get down is the greatest thing netflix has ever produced and it's a goddamn tragedy that it was canceled, but what does exist is just. incredible. it's about the rise of rap and hip-hop, the death of disco, and struggling to figure out identity and the meaning of success in the bronx in the 1970s. created & produced by baz lurhmann, the show incorporates archival footage of new york and real people with fictional narratives in a truly masterful way. it's absolutely gorgeous. the music is fucking fantastic. it's So worth watching and i wish that it had gotten the same hype as other netflix shows like st, oitnb, etc.
speaking of netflix. american vandal. if the get down is the best thing netflix has ever produced, american vandal is a very close second, and i could honestly be persuaded to swap their places, but ANYWAY. it's a mockumentary wherein a kid named peter and his best friend sam attempt to solve the mystery of who spray-painted twenty-seven dicks on twenty-seven cars in the staff parking lot at their high school. it's one of the funniest shows i've ever seen, and also the only show i've ever found to be accurate to the contemporary teenage experience. it's also like... insanely accurate as a parody and critique of real true crime documentaries. also if you're following me you're probably an st fan, and eduardo franco (argyle!!) is in american vandal as well, if that motivates you any more.
xena: warrior princess. it's the best show of all time and also the worst show of all time. everything that people say about shows like supernatural and glee and riverdale? xena did that shit back in the 90s, they did it better, and they did it with lesbians. they did it with swords. they did it with aphrodite. they did it with leather and whips and clones and reincarnation and true love's kiss. please watch xena.
community. if you haven't watched community idk what you're doing with your life to be quite honest. just watch it already.
GLOW. attention all tumblrinas who like messy complicated stupid mean scheming sexy women. you will fucking love glow. sorry i'm recommending so many netflix shows but i can't Not mention glow on here it would be a betrayal of my lesbianism. it is about sexy women wrestling. it's got blood. it's got tits. it's got storytelling. it's got 80s music. it's got fucking your best friend's husband as a means of feeling closer to her. yellowjackets fans i'm looking at you. watch glow.
ghosts (bbc). not cbs. dear god not cbs. bbc. but yeah ghosts is a sitcom about a young couple who suddenly inherit an old home (manor? thing? man i don't fuckin know english aristocracy stuff) full of ghosts. it's a fun, simple premise, and some parts of the show can be corny, but the actors sell it so well that it's just a pleasure to watch. if you're into sitcoms, i think it's worth giving ghosts a shot!
that's it for now i don't want this to get super long ❤️ thank u for asking!! also sorry if this wasn't what you expected from me lmao. OH ALSO watch the muppet show. like the OG 1970s muppet show. shit slaps.

What are some problems you've found in both the G2s of MLP & TF that you might think would come down to Hasbro still having been fairly new at making media that wasn't toys at the times of their making?
Well, G2 MLP didn't have any media. Except the UK and French comic books. Overall I don't think the comic books had any influence on G2's success or failure; if a kid already liked MLP they would enjoy them, but they weren't going to pull new kids to the brand.
Tumblr media
G2 Transformers are just G1 Transformers with bright 90s color schemes as far as I know. Hasbro was trying to zhuzh them up and make them feel ~NEW~ to draw in a new and more 'rad' crop of kids. I don't know how successful the line was, but I do like some of their crazy color schemes. I have a jet who looks like a cardigan sock.
As far as media goes, Hasbro took the G1 TF cartoon and added a bunch of CGI transitions which they called "the cybernetic space cube." I've never met anyone who liked the CGI, it's very distracting.
Tumblr media
It also had a comic book in the mid-90s. I'm not sure about the sales numbers, but in a fandom sense it was influential because this was the only source of new canon material at the time and because it was "adult". Not really adult, but what teenagers think is adult, lol. Edgy and grimdark. Since a lot of the kids of the 80s were now teens of the 90s, I imagine this was very gratifying. Like "SEE?! Transformers aren't just for kids, MOM!"
A group of UK based TF fanfic writers drew from these comics for inspiration, and when the comic book series finally ended, the final issue actually plugged this group. Very unusual to see in a canon publication! IIRC, one of the members of this UK fanfiction group was . . . James Roberts! Who years later would go on to be the writer of IDW Comic's popular Transformers comic, "More Than Meets The Eye". I would guess that this history helped James Roberts land the IDW job. (Although being a TF fan was not a prerequisite for writing TF comics for IDW.) And if that's the case, the G2 TF comic had a HUGE influence on the franchise, albeit indirectly.
However, MTMTE is nothing like G2 Transformers in tone. (Aside from having some body horror, I guess.) I listened to a podcast where James Roberts talked about how much DC's comedic 80s comic, "Justice League International" influenced him.
I guess this got pretty far afield from the original question, but it was a bit hard to answer because at the time Hasbro didn't really make their own media and ultimately I think the success or failure those lines were first and foremost about the toys. Like, I don't think G2 My Little Pony would have been a smash hit in the US if it had had a TV show. Sometimes a toy company puts forth a product and kids are just like: "NO."
Transformers fans, please forgive me if I got any details wrong, I was going from memory, ha ha.

Janis Joplin & Raquel Welch (on relationship w/ fans) [Dick Cavett] twitter.com/MichaelWarbur17/status/1660724794948460562?s=20
Kinda did a search on JJ... In a way her time era reflects current events- especially the turmoil (politics/leadership, environment, economy, human rights, etc). I was thinking of how the combination of technology & the adulation of fans has provided both positive & negative effects on society & culture. AI is the next phase. Yikes.
In a way I can see how today's artists have drawn from the influence of those before them- just like how the ones they followed drew from their predecessors. One of JJ's final actions was to help pay for a tombstone for Bessie Smith's (her hero) unmarked grave. Sadly her struggle with drugs & alcohol took her early at 27, not long after Jimi Hendrix.
An Artist's Ambition...
“Dear family,
I managed to pass my 27th birthday without really feeling it. Ah, such a funny game. Two years ago, I didn’t even want to be it – no, that’s not true.
I’ve been lookin’ around and I’ve noticed something; after you reach a certain level of talent – and quite a few have that talent – the deciding factor is ambition, or as I really see it: how much you really need.
Need to be loved, need to be proud of yourself. And I guess that’s what ambition is; it’s not all a depraved quest for position or money, maybe it’s for love. Lots of love.
Ha!
Janis”
At Sardis while dining with DC, JJ heard her song played and he asks her what song- she says "Down on Me" and he responded "I guess that's one you can't play on TV" and she replies "It's a gospel song."
https://www.tpt.org/janis-joplin-american-masters/video/american-masters-dick-cavett-janis-joplins-influence-him-and-his-show/
"Down On Me"
Down on me, down on me, Looks like everybody in this whole round world They're down on me.
Love in this world is so hard to find When you've got yours and I got mine. That's why it looks like everybody in this whole round world They're down on me.
Saying they're down on me, down on me. Looks like everybody in this whole round world Down on me.
When you see a hand that's held out toward you, Give it some love, some day it may be you. That's why it looks like everybody in this whole round world They're down on me, yeah.
Lord, they're down on me, down on me, oh! Looks like everybody in this whole round world Is down on me.
Believe in your brother, have faith in man, Help each other, honey, if you can Because it looks like everybody in this whole round world Is down on me.
I'm saying down on me, oh, down on me, oh! It looks like everybody in this whole round world Down on me!!
7.7.14 "Celebrity Spotlight: I predict that some things will never change. There will always be an increasing fixation on the private lives of musicians, especially the younger ones. Artists who were at their commercial peak in the '70s, '80s and '90s tell me, "It was never this crazy for us back then!" And I suspect I'll be saying that same thing to younger artists someday (God help them). There continues to be a bad girl vs. good girl/clean-cut vs. sexy debate, and for as long as those labels exist, I just hope there will be contenders on both sides. Everyone needs someone to relate to." - TS
as they wrote (satirically though it may be) in chicago: i'm a star! and the audience loves me! and i love them! and they love me for loving them, and i love them for loving me! and we love each other! and that's because none of us got enough love in our childhoods. and that's showbiz, kid.

I started rereading "Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture", Douglas Coupland's debut... umm... piece of work. This is the book that gave the name to my generation, and rang a very loud note of identification. After reading this book--and I have to admit it was the newsgroup #alt.society.generationx (#asgx) that pointed me to the book--I found my identity.
The world was bad, then, and, while it hasn't, on average, gotten any worse, it hasn't gotten any better, now.
I went to Uni ten years after any of my friends, who could afford it, actually did. Because of this delay, my Uni friends were all fresh out of school, and a little more invested in what they were doing. I was on an adventure, they were studying for their lives. It was also a time in their lives when they were still trying to escape that slightly tyrannical burden of "fitting in" that plagues us all as kids.
So I'm talking on the net to Americans who were my age, on asgx, and partying and studying and suffering, at Uni, with people who were still kids, but ready to be cast free as adults.
And I had already been through a horrible time in my own life, that Gen-x mid-twenties breakdown. A time that Coupland pretty well sums up like this:
"A period of mental collapse occurring in one's twenties, often caused by an inability to function outside of school or structured environments coupled with a realization of one's essential aloneness in the world. Often marks induction into the ritual of pharmaceutical usage."
It hit suddenly, and very nearly did kill me.
So Uni came as a super bright and wonderful burst of light. Just being accepted into Uni was a success. So anything I invested in Uni, from there on in, wasn't quite as much as the kids around me.
All the talk I had online, with people who grew up with the same TV shows, was about the same music, the same culture, and it put things into perspective. And I was growing up, all over again, in the real world.
I have an attachment to the music of the 70s, because it's my childhood. My childhood connects me to the music of the 50s, because of my parents. Then there is the music of the 60s, because the Boomers ran the TV, programmed the radio playlists, and held sway in any conversations about music. Then I have a deep emotional connection to the 80s, because, well, high school, puberty, heartbreak, political awakenings. I also planted roots in the music of the 90s, too, because Uni, Triple J going national, and more political awakening, and finding my identity.
Part of me is anchored in the fact that I never experienced, ever, the, "Congratulations, you've got the job," moment, except for when I was accepted into that first Traineeship scheme back in 1986, and then when I was accepted into Uni. More often it was, if i was lucky, a month's trial, which never worked out. But the most common experience was a letter that told me I really wasn't wanted. In my twenties, I very easily came to the conclusion that I was basically surplus to requirements. People are not defined by their occupation, but we often let that happen to us, and if you have no job, then you have no definition, no identity.
Generation X was all about that nowhere, that desert, that emptiness of being.
And then there was sex, love, and relationships, of which I had few. I mean I would watch my friends start conversations, buy drinks, and take people home, or go home with people, and have sex... with absolute strangers. Other friends would get together, and start relationships. Even now, the thought of touching, skin on skin, caressing, sharing bodies, with a complete stranger is uncomfortable, to me.
I'm not really certain, but the term is demisexual, and I kind of feel comfortable with that.
I didn't start this to write about all this, but this has travelled to places and ambled about in an unexpected way.

Do you miss someone at the moment?: yes and no, i don't know
Tell us about an early childhood memory?: I think this is one of my very first "clearer" memories: When my cousin and I were, maybe 3 years old, we and our parents went on some kind of camping/fishing trip. We were playing with pine cones ("cone cows" etc.) in front of our tent, then for some reason my cousin decided that she wanted to take off my hat and fill it with sand and then put it back on my head. So yes, the sand got everywhere, my eyes, ears etc.

What would you want your legacy to be?: Meh...dunno
Do you like reading? What was the last book you read?: Yes, if I feel like it...The last book I read? like a whole book? I actually can't remember...
How do you show someone you love them?: By listening to them and helping them if I can...I'm very bad at keeping in touch with people and seriously, I feel so bad about that...
Do you like ice in your drinks?: Rarely
What are you afraid of?: Deep waters. (and walking or being on frozen lake/river etc.)
What is your favorite scent?: Rain, earth, forest, fresh air
Do you address older people by their name or surname?: Their name
If money was not a factor, how would your life be different?: Yes it would be different, definitely more stress-free... But I don't really know how much different because I think there are many other issues that are keeping me from doing what I, maybe, would like to do so...
Do you prefer swimming in pools or the ocean?: I rarely swim anymore but if I have to say something then in a lake (my parents live by the lake so...) and ONLY in shallow water and no waves please when I'm in the water 😂
What would you do if you found $50 on the ground?: Actually I would probably leave it there 'cause I would be in that "what am I gonna do? What should I do?" -mode. But if saw who dropped it, then I would definitely give it to them.
What is one thing you'd want to teach your children?: I don't think I'm gonna have kids...
If you had to get a tattoo right now, what and where would it be?: On my wrist or ankle...maybe a tree or a bird or wolf or some kind of mandala...with my own designs

Last TV show you watched?: Lol I watched an episode of Bondi Rescue (yeah, it definitely helped my fear of deep waters 😂)
Invent a word and its meaning: I have no brain for that right now 😂
I tag: @spreadthecurse @legzeppelin @punk-rock-sunflowerr @sexcoffeeandrockandroll if you want to :)

5, 14, and 46 if you don't mind. I know you've mentioned at least Mary Shelley before but I want to know more!
5. Books or authors that influenced your style the most.
Tons and tons I don’t think I can name them all idkk I love how Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein, I still obsess over it. Edgar Allen Poe is a personal favorite, he’s a genius also kinda psychic. Kurt Vonnegut makes me feel like no one else. I love how much of a shit Kate Chopin does not give. HP Lovecraft, Ambrose Bierce, hell even Algernon Blackwood are legends. Maya Angelou is so powerful, every word is pure gold. OMG Haruki Murakami and his STORIES AAAHHH and I’m gonna stop here oof
14. What’s the most research you ever put into a book?
Obscure Twilight definitely~ I deep dived into Victorian culture and there are SO many fucking references. I reread Frankenstein because OF COURSE. It is pure 100% how life was in the Victorian era and I’m so proud of it. I even used a bit of Shakespearean era references for reasons I cannot disclose (spoilers!) A friend of mine who had a special studies course (?) in the Victorian era (she was obsessed with it) said she was going to read it and I was so happy that I would get a professional opinion on my assignment basically shkhaka but then let’s just say we’re not on talking terms anymore and I hope she can stop lying and playing the victim for pity :) sigh I still want another expert’s opinion 🤧 someone who’s honest with her friends this time hakhskahj anyWAY
46. What would your story _______ look like as a tv show or movie?
I’ll try them all since it wasn’t specified!
CHTMD - A season long Kdrama where the OC learns self love through each episode. The first three or four episodes of sad Kdramas are especially terrible to watch so ya’ll are gonna cry while OC mourns herself! Imagine the end of episode 1 where OC is going to deliver Jimin pizza just for her to quietly stumble on her husband and his mistress fucking and then bam it has that stupid flare effect and a melodramatic song plays🤧
Bunny Cam - A 2 hour movie that is built like the series YOU but instead of Jungkook flaking from one woman to another, he’s just lovesick over OC and everything she embodies for two hours and decides to get rid of anyone else in his way as his proposal to her. And she accepts ofc.
Devil’s Fair Share - This really gives me Fatal Attraction vibes or basically every thriller Sharon Stone played in the 90s. A 90s thriller definitely.
Obscure Twilight - This basically IS a movie. I have it set up like one SERIOUSLY. It’s supposed to feel long and drawn especially on paper. It’s based off of Freddie Kruger so kind of an 80′s horror. Except it has many influences from Candy Man so there’s also THAT. It’d be a huge occult hit~
DOAN - Something sad. I can see it being like an hour long movie. An erotic angst. While Speak Softly Love by the Godfather plays in the background the whole time.
CMLT - A hip 90′s TV show! Quirky, lovable characters, college life, too many couples AU. Everyone’s got a thing going on. OC and Namjoon being apart of the popular kids and just getting into shenanigans with their other popular friends the SeokBitches, Sana, Yoongi and a few others. Their relationship going through trials and tribulations but they always make it back together again uwu It was super popular but got cancelled after just two seasons because of network drama
