"It's different than Rodeo Kings, Stan Morrison, Grey Flag. This burden predates all of that, and you know it. If you don't confront the past, you'll be held down by it. Won't be able to write a speech, let alone be there for your kids or your partner. Anything. Well, aren't I, uh, confronting the past right now? Surrendering to yourself was only the first part. There's one more tough conversation you need to have, and when you do that, your life, your future... ...will be just that. Yours."

Walker "The Quiet" review
The episode opens with Cordell and Geri happily bumping into walls while making out before Cordell leaves for work where he ends up bumping inside a runaway tractor trailer driven by a thief the rangers have been tracking for weeks.  James and Trey are also in the trailer though they're only there because Cordell had jumped into the moving trailer, which he claims was inspired by Trey's first case.  Trey doesn't want credit for Cordell's latest impulsive antic, but it all ends well when Cordell does a homerun slide into the baddie's face and just like that, we’re off to a good start.
5 months have passed to explain August’s growth spurt during the real world’s Hollywood strike that delayed Walker’s return by 11 months.  August now looks like a younger clone of the actor that played Sam Winchester’s adult son in the Supernatural finale, which means he has to be hired for the Supernatural revival as young Dean Winchester II.
The Walker clan pus Geri and Ben are planning Cordell’s birthday with a party bus to a steak eating contest.  That of course gets jettisoned when Cassie Perez, a temp with the FBI, arrives at Ranger HQ to recruit Cordell, James , and Trey s help to help the FBI nab drug operatives.  August suggested moving the steak eating contest to the Walker ranch and just like that, birthday party back on.
But first, Cassie gifts Cordell a pair of alligator cowboy boots that I'm sure she clobbered the alligator herself during her 5-month stint in Florida, and brings Cordell back to Walker ranch for a surprise birthday lunch.   August yeets out of the birthday party early to go to high school senior parties, much to Cordell disappointment who then sneaks away from his own birthday party to look over the latest development of the serial killer Jackal case with Trey.  Hey, like father like son!
Cordell and Trey gets busted by James' wife Kelly who immediately recognizes the killer's calling card, a set of jackal teeth.  She is upset to learn that the Jackal re-emerged during her re-wedding to James and demands Cordell and Trey to not tell James who is still haunted by the unsolved case.  Speaking of being haunted by the past, Stella and Liam commiserate over being forced to take another human life; Liam killing Clint when he invaded the ranch, Stella killing Witt when he invaded Geri’s house.  Liam assures Stella she will be fine with time. We learn that Witt initially survived the gunshot wound and escaped the house, only to die 2 miles away on the roadside.  The police consider the case closed, but we know it's unsolved as we never found out why he broke into Geri's house.
After a very busy day of taking down thieves, drug dealers, and a steak eating contest, it comes to a screeching halt into “the quiet”. Cordell and Geri spend some quiet quality time and Cordell admits fearing “the quiet” with a daughter at college living away from home and August looking forward to flying the coop.
Trey arrives to update Cordell on the Jackal case and asked him if it was really that bad when James worked on the case.  Flashback showing an unhinged James obsessing over the case, avoiding his family and to the horror of his wife, physically taking out his frustration on Cordell (third time we see Cordell being bumped against walls).  Trey asked if it was the depravity that got to James.  No, Cordell says, it was "the quiet" when the Jackal eluded James.
Besides the normal empty-nest angst by parents, Cordell is also a military veteran who operates at a different level than everyone else.  Veterans’ lows are civilians’ highs so veterans get bored very quickly and seek high risk hobbies or jobs.  Cordell’s job as a Texas Ranger helped fulfill that high risk need and serves as a distraction until a new reality threatens to bring back “the quiet” resulting from absences: his wife’s death and now his children leaving the nest.  Both Cordell and James hated “the quiet '' and Cordell vowed to catch the Jackel before “the quiet” comes back for James again.
Speculation #1: The Jackal heard about the James wedding and wants to mess with James by killing again.
Side note: Cordell and Cassie discussing the Hawkshadow reboot sounds like the Walker Texas Ranger reboot i.e. "more grounded and focus on the family". I really need Cassie and Cordell to go undercover in a Hawkshadow convention.
My score: 8 out of 10, a solid start to the season with the quiet before the storm.

4x02 Review
I have to admit, I wasn't sure there would be room in the lineup for a lighter episode given the limited episode count, but "Maybe it's Mabelline" was just what we needed after that busy premiere.
The main plot of the episode is focused on protecting a key witness in a money laundering case: Maybelline Pratt. Despite her insistence that she doesn't need protecting and she's perfectly fine to testify, the FBI isn't taking any chances and they plan to put her into WITSEC. However, she refuses to leave with the men they send and since they can't leave her unattended, Cordell suggests one of our merry band of rangers take her home. Unfortunately, Cassie doesn't have a place of her own and Trey's apartment isn't secure enough to hold a witness. The safest place would be the Walker family ranch and, as much as Cordell is already annoyed with her, he has no choice but to agree.
Side note: Did Jared get tired of his character getting hit on all the time? I got that feeling watching everything between Cordell and Maybelline and Trey XD
As prickly as Maybelline is with Cordell initially, she softens after learning he lost his wife and become a single parent. This leads to some interesting conversation between them when he finds her sitting up at the dining table later at night. When Cordell opens up about his concerns with his children rushing out of the nest, she offers some unexpected comfort. The fact that they feel comfortable enough to leave means that he did a good job raising them, and they'll likely come back one day.
The next day, Cordell and Cassie and Trey bring her to court to testify, but things get hairy when there's a commotion at the security checkpoint. The rangers handle it, leaving her with a security guard who starts to take her away while they're distracted. It's clear that this was an attempt by the criminal on trail to silence her witness testimony and, while Maybelline can't escape on her own, she purposefully leaves her bag as a clue to where her captor took her. One parking garage chase scene later, Cordell and Cassie have the captors backed up against the elevator, where Trey shows up to save the day. Another successful day for our ranger troop, in more ways than one.
Fussy Maybelliene
Side note- did jared get tired of his character being flirted with constantly?
Meaningful conversations and realizations
Aside from the main plot of the episode, a lot of the episode continued focus on Stella handling her guilt and trauma from the break-in in the season 3 finale. In this episode, we're shown her guilt over what happened to Witt. Yes, Witt tried to harm her and Sadie and possibly Geri, but he still died and she feels at fault for that. He was young, just like her, and a had a whole future ahead of him- one that he can never live out now. Liam's attempts to assure her that she doesn't need to feel guilty because Witt was a bad person don't soothe her because she can't help but see Witt for all of who he was outside of the break-in. This results in a fight when Liam tries to push Stella further into equine therapy, something she just isn't interested in.
Later, we see her visiting a roadside memorial for Witt with a rose and a rugby ball, something she found out he was interested in. While she's there, she meets a man who introduces himself as Witt's uncle, which doesn't help her guilt in the least. She leaves quickly after she meets him, which gives our new man a chance to call and report their meeting to someone else.
Much later, at the Side Step, we see Stella trying and failing to get in contact with Sadie, demanding that they talk. Ben overhears and knows better than to push for details. Instead, he gives her space to air out her feelings. Unlike Liam, Ben validates her feelings of guilt and compares it to his own guilt over what happened to Lucas. He assures her that it's completely normal to feel that way and it just means she's a good person with a conscience. This gives her the comfort to reconnect with Liam over darts later.
Side note: I said this last time but I just love how much more a part of the family Ben has become. I just wish it didn't all happen off screen.
But, that comfort is soon dashed when she returns to her dorm that night and finds a threatening message on the window, written in dripping red paint.
A smaller plot that was no less significant was August wanting to join boot camp. He starts off by asking Bonham to go over Cordell's head and convince Trey to let him join without a parent signature. This is an interesting scene for me as it shows us that while Bonham is more outwardly supportive of August's military aspirations, he does have reservations about it. When August says that Bonham was the one that told him he needed to learn discipline, Bonham says that he can see August already has. Not that it changes his grandson's mind, but I think this was a great talk between them.
Side note: I did not expect Trey to be the drill sergeant for this program and I'm very much looking forward to August assuming he'll get a leg up because of that.
When Bonham tries to broach the subject with Cordell, he immediately shuts it down. Cordell is putting his foot down strongly against any parental interference this season and I have to appreciate that. It's clear that, at this point, Cordell is trying to put of August growing up as long as he can. It's not until an insightful conversation with Maybelline Pratt later in the episode that he starts to see things differently and signs the form.
In probably one of my favorite scenes of the episode, Cordell and August finally have a talk about it. Here, Cordell explains that while he doesn't necessarily regret his own tour in the military, he doesn't want August to rush into it. He's still young and he has a lot of options available, ones that Cordell didn't necessarily have when he came home from Afghanistan and suddenly had to become a father and provider. But, if this is really what August wants, he'll be supportive, no matter how much he'll worry over it.
Side note: The combination of that pilot flashback and Cordell calling August his "baby boy" did something to my heart and I'm not over it.
A small plot that I really enjoyed this episode was Cassie and Geri's friendship. I've long hoped for more female bonding on this show and these two becoming friends was a great idea.
We find out that Cassie has decided to stay in Austin with the rangers after figuring out that part of what made the FBI feel so great to her was that it was a temporary gig. Between that and James promising her a bright future here, she made a call to Tessa and started looking for new apartments. Geri is extremely supportive of that. So supportive, in fact, that she offers Cassie a chance to move into the bungalow later in the episode- which Cassie graciously accepts. I look forward to seeing how these two live together. And how Cordell handles this turn of events.
There is a part of me that wishes Cassie had spent more time balancing her options between the rangers and the FBI but I understand there were time constraints.
A small moment that I appreciated in this episode was Bonham and Abby talking in the barn after his attempts to talk to Cordell about August's boot camp dreams. Their couple banter was on point as usual, but I liked that Bonham brought up the concept of their future again. They haven't had a conversation about retirement since season 2 and I think it shows how comfortable they feel that Bonham was the one to bring it up again.
Side note: I love that Abby and Ben have gone into business doing weddings at the ranch. It just makes me happy how Ben has become a part of the family.
As with any good episode of Walker, I'm left with good feels on the episode and so many questions for next week! Where is Sadie? Where is Dettective Luna? How is August going to handle boot camp training? Is Stella going to be forced to tell the truth? Are Geri and Cordell officially moving in anytime soon? Will Maybelline return for Ranger Barnett?
See y'all next week!

Gone Girl 3- Missing Persons
Tumblr media
Author’s Note: Here we go, down the Walker hole! My beta for this is Miss Cupcake (@petitegateau991 on tumblr)
Summary: Cordell goes looking for info on Y/n.
Pairing: none yet
Word Count: 1331
Story Warnings: not much just felonies to get info, mentions of death of a
~~~~
Cordell looked around the office before sitting down. He wasn't strictly allowed to look into the woman using Ranger resources, but Y/n was too suspicious. He put her name into the system, but nothing came up. No court records in any Texas court, no speeding tickets, not even a vehicle operator's license or state ID. Y/n Salama didn’t exist according to Texas.
He tried a few different spellings and anything that might be a long form of the name, but nothing came up.
So, he went to Google. The search site gave him no more than searching through official channels. She didn't seem to have an online presence, either.
"Who doesn't have social media these days?" he asked himself before pulling out his phone. The phone rang twice before it connected. "Hey, Geri."
"Cordell Walker. What in the world are you doin' callin' me at 7am?"
"Need a favor." He waited for her to get her moans and groans and complaints out before he continued. "New girl, Y/n, I need to know who she is."
"What? Why?"
"Just a feelin' I have. Can you get into the file cabinet in the office and get me some info?" He cleared his throat and looked around the office again. "Maybe her Social Security number?"
"Ranger, are you asking me to perform identity theft?"
"No. Not that far, just...gather information."
"Personal information. Wha-what's this feeling you have?"
"That she's not who she says she is. I mean, she says she went to one of the toughest schools in Dallas. White has, what, four gangs and some of the lowest test scores in the state and more kids that get locked up each year than graduate...but she speaks like a debutante? She's got tan lines on her left hand, but I can't find any record of her being married. I can't find any record of her, at all. So, maybe she's lying about her name for some reason and I can look her up based on that social yer gonna get me?" He didn't mention the way she treated his cuts and bruises.
Geri sighed heavily, sending static through the phone. "Fine. I will try to get in and get your information."
“Thank you ever so much, Geraldine,” he teased before slumping a little in his chair. “Seriously. Keep an eye on her for me, too. Something’s not right."
"Right," she responded dryly.
"What?"
"If you're doin' this because she's cute, you could just-"
"She's not cute. Jesus, just...let me know what you find out."
"Whatever you say. I'm goin' back to sleep."
Cordell rolled his eyes as he set his cell on his desk. He would investigate her more later.
~~~~~~~
"I've got a soccer game tomorrow. You aren't planning to get kidnapped before then, are you?" Stella asked as Cordell sat at the dinner table that night.
Auggie and Bonham chuckled but Abilene shook her head. "That isn't funny, Stella. Your father could have been killed."
"He's always almost getting killed," the teen sassed back.
"But at least he's almost getting killed in Austin," Bonham chimed.
"Thanks, Dad," Cordell said, picking up a roasted potato with his fork. "I have no plans on being abducted or almost gettin' killed between now and your next soccer game, Stel. I'll be there."
"Good, because I'm starting forward and I'm gonna kick butt."
Everyone except Auggie smiled, proud of the young athlete. "Of course you're gonna kick butt. Can't wait to see it." Stella smiled at her father's words and focused on her plate.
"So, they got all the guys who were running that fight ring?" Auggie asked.
Cordell's eyes went to his mother's. Abilene was blatantly unhappy with the conversation choice. "Yeah. Pretty sure. I mean, my head was a little fuzzy in the debrief but I think they did. How, uh, how's school comin'?" he asked to switch subjects. His mother smiled at him as she listened to Auggie talk.
~~~~~
"Okay, so she's not just awkward and uptight," Geri said, leaning across the bar closer to Walker. "I started askin' her 'bout her family...normal shit, right? 'How's yer mama an' them?' kinda stuff and she suddenly remembered she had to go clean the Men's room. I asked if she had any friends in town, she said 'not yet' so I asked her what kinda crazy she is to move somewhere with no job or support system waiting for her and she clammed up." Geri shook her head. "She ran out to get something from her car and didn't come back until we hit a rush and I was too busy to ask her any other questions."
Walker shook his head. The theory forming in his head was a sad one. "You get that information for me?" he asked quietly.
"Yeah, but...you didn't get it from me, cowboy." She dug into her apron pocket and pulled out a paper coaster, folded in half.
"Thank you."
"You'll tell me when you figure her out, right? I'm invested now."
.
Walker chuckled and nodded as he tucked the coaster into his pocket. "Yes, ma'am."
"You want a beer?"
He shook his head as he stood. "Nah. I'ma head back to the office and look this up. I'll talk to you later."
"Well, I'm off at 7, so if you don't make it back here before then, I'll call you tomorrow."
Walker figured he could make it to the office and back, checking the Social Security Number quickly in what was sure to be an almost empty office, so he just nodded and left. Dodging janitorial staff and the odd Ranger, he made it back to his desk and input the number into the search.
'Ann Maria Salama
DOB: 04/19/1986
Deceased: 08/11/1988'
"Seems Y/n's a dead girl. Interesting." He checked his watch. "Geri gets off in ten minutes. Dead girl should be on by the time I get back."
The trip back to the bar was spent figuring out the best way to approach the woman about her use of an alias and a dead girl's social. He adjusted his hat and headed into the bar. She flinched at the sound of the door opening, then smiled brightly. "Hello, Ranger! Those bruises seem to be healing nicely."
Walker nodded as he moved to sit at the bar. "Yeah, I think I can thank you for that."
"Well, you're ever so welcome. Thought you might be upset at me for makin' you drink Shirley Temples all night."
"Not as upset as I am about you lying to me about your name," he said nonchalantly. Her eyes went wide and snapped to meet his. "And where you went to school and probably that story about your great great grandaddy coming into Angel Island, since 'Salama' is a name that belongs to a little girl who died of leukemia at two years old." Her jaw dropped and trembled, and he could see her body tense as she debated fleeing. "Now, don't run. Pretty sure neither of us want me to chase you."
"Ranger, I...please, let me-"
"You're gonna explain," he interrupted. He made his expression soft, putting as much empathy in his eyes as he could manage. "Because you've broken some heavy federal laws here and I get the feeling it's not because you wanted to."
She broke immediately, sobs wracking her body as she dropped her elbows to the bar top and buried her face in her hands. "Please, don’t take me in! I had to! I didn't have a choice. I had to get away!"
Every theory he had about why she was lying was confirmed in that last sentence. He reached out to put a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Hey, it's okay. I'm not gonna take you in...but I need to know everything."
She sniffled as she stood up, eyes red and lids puffy as she wiped tears from them. "Okay. I'll tell you."
Cowgirls Don't Cry
Cordell Walker x Sister!Magnolia Rae Walker (OC) Warnings: Mentions of death and grief, but mostly fluff and emotional conversations.
Author note | This is very rough in terms of editing, and any and all types of feedback is greatly appreciated.
There’s this feeling when the glue dies, when it becomes clear that someone important and special dies and the mark, they left of the rest of the family becomes clear. That feeling permeated every aspect of life and everybody dealt with the grief in different ways. Maggie threw herself head long into her work, she tended to the horses in the stables all hours of the day and night. Her brother Cordell left and fell into a dark hole, Liam became the glue and voice of reason. That was until Liam proposed the idea of him filing for custody of Stella and August, that broke Maggie’s hold on all that was sane.
***
The room was still as Liam’s proposal sank in, his words shaking Maggie’s resolve as she tired her best not to lash out. As much as she wanted to reach across the table and punch her brother in the face, she couldn’t do it, not in front of the kids.
“How dare you,” Maggie seethed, her face not hiding the anger she held for her brother in that moment. The rest of the walker family simply stared at the young brunette women as she uncharacteristically fought with the middle Walker sibling.
“What do you mean, Stella and Auggie need stability and a Cordell isn’t here to do it so why not” Liam spoke, trying to reason with his little sister. While normally the only daughter of Abeline and Bonham Walker would join her brother in being the voice of reason in the family, today it seemed Liam’s words were the straw that broke the camels back.
“Don’t talk like he’s gone, Cords not gone like that” Maggie chastised her brother trying desperately to not raise her voice in front of Stella and August, but she couldn’t help it. In her mind, Liam’s suggestion was him talking like Cordell was dead and the family needed to move on.
“Maggie, Your brother isn’t suggesting anything,” Abeline tired to sooth her only daughter’s rage. “Not in front of the kids” she urged her child.
“No Momma, He’s…He’s talking as Cord’s never coming back” Maggie said teary eyed. While Maggie always told people that she loved both her brothers equally, something about Emily’s death and Cordell leaving that in this moment she despised Liam.
“Magnolia Rae Walker” Bonham’s firm voice cut harshly though the impending fight. Maggie looked at her father in teary silence. Without another word Maggie left the room, the house and escaped to the only place she’d ever felt at peace, the stables.
Liam found his sister sniffing away and rubbing her eyes with her head in her hands, tucked away in the corner of an empty stall. She had dug up a blanket the siblings had kept in the barn for moments just like this. Stepping into the stall, Liam sat down pulling his sister in his arms.
“I’m sorry, we all miss him you know” Liam spoke into his sister’s hair as sobs racked through her. Her walls crumbling as she was enveloped in the safety of her brother’s arms. While she might have hated Liam for his suggestion, the comfort she felt in his arms was something she was craving as her emotions got the best of her. The siblings sat there in the silent night, Liam letting Maggie cry.
“Frist Emily and now Cordi, I don’t know if I can do it any more Liam”.
“You’re not alone Rae”.
“Is he dead?” While her question was not out of the realm of possibility, the fact that his teary-eyed sister had timidly asked it anyway shook Liam a little. Liam didn’t respond for a minute; he didn’t know what to say to console her. In the end Liam only whispered a simple ‘no’, causing a new, fresh wave of tears to flood down her blotchy cheeks.
For the following months Liam regularly checked in with his sister and soon persuaded her to talk to someone. While Maggie still threw herself into her work, her conversations with Dr Levitt helped her redirect her pain and loss into healing via her interactions with her family. Maggie invested deeply into both Stella and August’s life and schooling, she encouraged both teens to came and talk to her when they needed or no one else would listen, Aunty Maggie would listen. The Walker family learned to move forward, to understand their feelings relating to Emily’s death, even with the dark cloud of Cordell’s absence looming over them. Magnolia never wanted to take Emily’s place as the family’s glue, but when a void appears in the family, someone must fill this important role.
When Cordell returned it was like the last few months never happened. The moment Maggie laid eyes on her brother, and she saw the worn look in his eyes, the stone walls and supports she’d built crumbled within seconds. She became distant once again, throwing herself into her work on the ranch once again.
***
The sun was slowly rising over the family ranch when Cordell drove back up the drive. His brain foggy with memories of Emily. The ranch was quiet, at this time in the morning, he didn’t think a single soul would be up yet. Then he saw Maggie walk across the yard and towards the stables. Even from this distance, Cordell could see the sag in her shoulders and the sluggishness in her walk. Sat in his truck a little longer and watched as a small smile graced his sisters’ lips when she opened the stable doors and greeted the horses housed within. Later, when he entered the family kitchen, his sister was notably absent.
“Morn’ Mamma,” Cordell greeted Abeline Walker, embracing her and kissing her head.
“Morning Darling” Abeline gestured to the pot of coffee on the counter and flipped the pancakes.
“Where’s Nolia?”
“Probably out with the horses, why don’t you go rangle her in for breakfast” His mother asked as Cordell downed his first coffee of the day. Cordell merely nodded and ventured out to the stables. The family’s large stables oak doors were swung wide open, and Cordell could see his sister tending to an young Tennessee walker colt.
“He’s new” Quipped the Texas ranger.
“Yeah, Daddy and I found him injured wondering the Davison’s old land” Maggie answered absentmindedly, stroking the nose of the chestnut-coloured colt.
“What’s his name” By now Cordell was leaning against the door to the colt’s stall.
“Cordi”
“You missed me that much huh”.
“Yeah, I guess mamma sent you” Maggie quipped turning to her brother, Cordell once again merely nodded in response, “You want to see something”. Cordell raised his eyebrows in query, Maggie mentioned for him to follow her. The pair walked further down the stables.
“You remember Pop tart the Appaloosa mare daddy got me for my birthday a few years ago,” Cordell hummed, that horse had been Magnolia’s pride and joy, she rode the mare any chance she could come rain or shine, “Well a few months ago she had a filly”.
Maggie leant against a new stall, this one was occupied by a large white and grey speckled appaloosa and a smaller almost identical filly. “I couldn’t help myself and named her Emily”.
Cordell watched as the small filly crossed the stall and left the comfort zone of her mother. Reaching his hand into the stall, the filly gave a tentative sniff. Maggie nudged her brother’s arm and handed him a small carrot, which he offered to the foal. Emily excitably munched on the treat before pushing her head into Cordell’s hand once more, searching for more carrots.
“Why Emily,”
“She was born a week after you left, everyone was so lost, when daddy asked me what we should call her, Emily was the only name I could think of. The kids seemed to brighten up a little when I told them her name. Stella even helped me tend to her those first few months” She answered as she refilled the feed and water buckets in the stall.
Weeks past before Cordell got the courage to talk to his little sister again, this time he came armed with the knowledge of Liam betrayal and how defensive the young women had gotten. Once again, he found her tending to the horses in the barn.
“Maggie” Came Cordell’s voice, laced with an unusual mix of uncertainty and confidence for the Texas ranger. The women in question simply hummed in acknowledgement as she brushes the stallion’s coat. “I know what Liam did”
The barn remained silent; it was as if the few months that Cordell had been undercover were a period that his sister mere wished to forget now that he has come home.
“We were all grieving Em’s death and then your disappearing act really rocked to boat” Magnolia’s voice was soft as her hand stilled, Adonis – the stallion maggie was tending to whined slightly at the lack of attention. “Then Liam suggested petitioning for custody of the kids, i…I just couldn’t believe he even thought about it…to me it felt like he thought you were never coming back and…I…I thought he was suggesting y…you…were…dead” She stuttered around her tears. Cordell didn’t respond both his brother and Stella had recounted the pain and anger in the usually soft and understanding women when Liam brought up his idea at family dinner. Instead, he simply stepped forward and wrapped his arms around Magnolia.
“I know, thank you for defending me”.
“Always”
“Now,” Cordell said after separating from the hug and clasping his hands together, “Whatever Momma is cooking smells absolutely amazing” Magnolia smiled and followed her brother back into the family home, linked at the elbows like they use to do as kids.
Abeline’s smile grew when she saw her children walk into the kitchen, Magnolia giggling loudly, seemingly at something Cordell had said. For their mother, it sparked joy to see her baby girl smile a genuine smile, something that hadn’t graced her lips since the family received the news of Emily’s death. She hoped and prayed that night that the smile on Magnolia’s lips never had to leave ever again.
CHARACTERS UPDATES
I have removed Cordell Walker from my muse list.
Added Eric, the Huntsman from "Snow White and the Huntsman" (with focus on the first movie since I feel like the second one just threw out everything I liked about the character) as well as ahem... another Slater character in the form of Arkansas Dave Rudabaugh from Young Guns 2!
They are just test muses for now and we'll see how it goes!
@cordellxwalker
Emily Walker was a respectable member of society. She was locally famous as a humanitarian, a loving wife and mother, and an animal lover at heart.
She also had a secret that not even Cordell knew, and there would never be any reason for it to come out.
Until now.....
The recent murders in Austin had caused a scare among the local population, especially the women. So far, five young women had gone missing only for their mangled bodies to resurface a few days later. The police were scratching their heads about the means and motive of these murders, but Emily knew very well who- or rather what- had caused this.
She also knew she couldn't do this alone. Stella fit the target demographic of these murders and if Cordell was going to have half a chance at keeping her safe, he needed to know the truth.
She knocked on the door to his study and steeled herself for the hardest conversation of her life. "Hey, sweetie? Do you have a minute?"
Dream a Little Dream of Me
Relationship(s): Lucia Reyes/Cordell Walker
Tags/Warnings: Dreams, Dreamworld, Dreams vs Reality, Falling in Love, Alternate Universe- Farm/Ranch, First Dates, Fluff, Fluff and Angst
Summary:
Cordell is getting older. The effects of his job are starting to show on his body and, with his kids out of the house, it's getting harder to find reasons to want to get out of bed to do it all over again. Some days are better than others, but his life is definitely missing something.
On top of that, he's having some very strange dreams where he works as a ranch hand during the frontier days of Texas and he's taken a shine to his boss's daughter.
-------
Cordell Walker collapsed in bed after another long day at the office. Most of the time, he loved being a Ranger. He loved the thrill he got from taking out the bad guys and the satisfaction of a job well done. And then there were days like today, when he was counting the days to retirement.
Things were just harder. He was getting older, though he knew he wasn’t exactly “old” per se. Middle aged at most. But still. His kids had already moved out and onto bigger things, his back and joints hurt more than usual, and he was really just feeling the effects of living a full life.
He just wanted to sleep and forget everything for a while. He closed his eyes with a heavy sigh and wished for sweet dreams.
When he opened his eyes again, he wasn’t in his own bed. Or even his own house as far as he could tell.
This dream again. He sighed and rolled out of bed.
It started had a few weeks ago. He went to sleep one night and woke up here. “Here” being some kind of weird dreamworld where he was a ranch hand sometime in the frontier days. He’d work with the horses, eat some delicious chili with the family, and then head back to bed, where he'd wake up back in his own life, perfectly rested for the day. It was like some kind of weird lucid recurring dream (aside from the fact that it changed every time but he couldn’t think of any other explanation for it).
Whatever it was, he wasn’t going to complain. It was restful, in its own way. Sure, the work was exhausting, but there was a simple clarity to it. He never felt like the weight of the world was on his shoulders when he was caring for the horses and mending fences. There was no crushing responsibility, no judgemental family, no too-empty house…. None of the things he felt in his waking life.
It didn’t hurt that the family he worked for here was nice too. Anna Maria Reyes provided two meals a day for all the ranch hands and Francis was an understanding, if strict, employer. Luis was a bit off in Cordell’s opinion, always speaking about how he was going to take over the ranch one day but rarely listening to his father’s words.
“Good morning, Senor Walker.”
Cordell blushed and tipped his hat to Lucia as he entered the house for breakfast. “Good morning, Miss Lucia.”
And then there was Lucia, the beloved daughter of the ranch. She was beautiful and charming, but no one dared make a move (not when Francis was around anyway). But it never mattered, since everyone knew she was enamored with the infamous Hoyt Rawlins. Cordell shook his head just at the thought. Just like the Hoyt Rawlins he knew (rest his soul), that man clearly didn’t know what he had.
But that wasn’t really Cordell’s concern. He was just there to help with the horses and mend the fences. And he was just fine with that.
So long as Francis never caught his eyes lingering, that is.
—-------
“-not that big of a deal, Papa. I’m singing and I’m getting paid. I don’t even have to pay for the costumes.”
“I don’t like it. Young ladies shouldn’t put themselves on display in places like that. It’s not safe.”
“It’s safe! Hagan treats the girls well and-”
“You are not one of his girls!”
Cordell really tried not to listen in on the conversation. It wasn’t any of his business. But mucking the stall wasn’t exactly mentally stimulating so he couldn’t really help it.
“I’m already scheduled to sing tomorrow! I can’t just not go! How would that look, hm? Do you want Hagan to complain about your daughter not being trustworthy?”
Cordell cringed. She was lucky Francis had a soft spot for her. He knew Luis would never get away with saying something like that.
Francis sighed. “I don’t like this,” he repeated. “Cordell!”
Cordell set the pitchfork aside and stepped out of the stall he was in. “Yes sir?”
“You have the day off tomorrow, yes?”
“Yes sir.”
Francis nodded. “Would you mind escorting Lucia into town tomorrow? She’s insistent on going to Hagan’s and I want to make sure she’s safe.”
“Ah-”
“Papa!” Lucia hissed. “It’s his day off; he has better things to do.”
“I really don’t mind,” Cordell said quickly. “I meant to go into town anyway. I’d be happy to take you.”
“Good, it’s settled.”
“Papa-” Lucia cut herself off and huffed as Francis left them, presumably to do other work. She turned to him, eyes full of apology. “You really don’t need to waste your day off with me.”
Cordell smiled. “Like I said, I don’t mind. Besides, I’ve never gotten to see you perform before.”
She smiled, a soft blush dusting her cheeks. “Well…. Only if you’re sure. I wouldn’t want to derail your plans….”
“You could never.” He tipped his hat to her. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
—--------
After a crappy day in the office, he was honestly looking forward to tonight’s weird lucid recurring dream. The fact that he would be spending most of it with Lucia was a different matter altogether.
“Are you ready to leave?” he asked when it was time, holding his hand out to her to help her onto the family’s horse-cart.
She smiled and nodded, taking his hand. “Ready.”
The drive into town was pleasant, not too hot with a nice breeze. Neither of them spoke on the way, content to enjoy the nice evening ride.
When they arrived at Hagan’s, Cordell helped her down and she took his arm as they walked inside.
Then, he showed up. “Lucia!” Hoyt Rawlins came running over, charming smile fading as he saw her arm in Cordell’s. “I didn’t know you were coming to town tonight.”
“I didn’t know you’d even be in town,” Lucia said stiffly.
“Well, in my letter-”
“I burned it,” she snapped, gripping Cordell’s arm tighter. “You think you can just disappear for months and send a short letter and that will keep me hanging on? I’m not one of your white doves, Hoyt.”
“That’s not what I-”
“It doesn’t matter. I stopped waiting for you long ago.” She turned away from him and looked up at Cordell. “Let’s go; it’s almost time.”
“Wait, Lucia.” Hoyt grabbed her other arm. “What are you saying?”
“I think she said she’s done with you,” Cordell said in a low voice, holding Lucia closer as she wrenched her arm away.
Hoyt’s eyes narrowed at him. “What? You shackin’ up with him now?”
“Yes. What business is it of yours?” she snapped. “Don’t write me anymore, Rawlins.” She pulled Cordell into Hagan’s, muttering under her breath.
“Don’t let him get to you,” Cordell murmured. “We’re here for your show, remember?”
“I know, I know.” Lucia sighed. “I’m sorry.”
“You don’t have to apologize for him.”
“No, no, I mean- I’m sorry for dragging you into this. I know we’re not….” She trailed off, blushing and looking att he floor.
“It’s okay,” he said gently. “I don’t mind. More reason for him to leave you alone, right?” He smirked and kissed her hand.
She giggled. “I suppose so….”
Shortly after, she went onstage and sang the most beautiful song Cordell had ever heard.
When he woke up the next morning, he couldn’t help but feel a loss.
—---------
And so it went. Cordell would wake up, live his normal life, now almost eagerly awaiting the moment he would fall asleep again and return to the lovely Lucia.
Almost. Who was he kidding? He much preferred his “dream” life to his real life and probably had for longer than he was willing to admit. It wasn’t long before he found himself not wanting to wake up again.
And, one day, he didn’t.
One day, he announced to Francis his intentions with Lucia. One day, he took Lucia into Independence for a proper date. Many days later, he rented a room at Hagan’s and spent the night there with Lucia.
That night, he fell asleep with her in his arms. The next morning, he woke up and, rather than being in his empty bed at home, he was still with Lucia.
He really didn’t mind that.
