However, the reason I put him in 3rd place is that he is ultimately able to escape this and choose his own fate, freeing himself from all of it all. And because I'm delusional, I think the open ending leaves room for a novel ending!

#4 Zhou Xiao

It's a testament to Luo Yunxi's choice of roles that Zhau Xiao is only number 4, after being blackmailed and oppressed, gaslighted, abused, lied to about his mother's death and his daughter's existence, and finally giving up his life because he couldn't trust the system to take the guy out. On top of that, he was torn between his sister, his child, his ex and his love, ultimately choosing them all over himself.

#5 Shangguan Tou

There are many tragic characters to choose from for my last spot, but I chose Shangguan Tou because he was abandoned by his father, drugged and (almost?) sexually assaulted. On top of that, he falls in love with an immature woman who can't express her feelings very well. A different kind of tragic love story in my opinion (the why-does-he-have-to-fall-for-her kind). The Winner was definitely not love.

Honorable Mentions

Luo Ben from Light Chaser Rescue and Li Zeliang from Lie to Love are not on the list, but they could be. Luo Ben lost his parents, feels guilty about his sisters' medical complications, but therapy could actually save this guy. Li Zeliang lost his father, failed to save someone and instead watched them die; an incident that cost him his leg and his passion. The latest addition to this list is Gu Yunzheng from Love is Panacea, who has severe abandonment issues due to a mother who left him and died, a neglectful father and a dead wife he couldn't save in time. But again, therapy could really work here.

I can't wait to add Chu Wanning from Immortality and Tang Lici from Shui Long Yin to this list! I have a feeling they will make it into my TOP5!

I’ve seen many people do end-of-the-year rankings of the dramas they watched, so here is mine! I’m ranking them in order from the ones I enjoyed the most to the ones I enjoyed the least. This is not a reflection on the actual quality of the dramas and is based exclusively on how much I subjectively liked them. 

1. Monarch Industry 

Favourite drama of the year and possibly my favourite drama ever! It’s so good! Xiao Qi owns my entire heart! Warmly recommended 🖤

2. Black Sails 

A most excellent show. Highly recommended. 

3. Love Like the Galaxy

I loved this drama so much! Shaoshang is the best female lead of the year, hands down! I adore her! Plus, this is the drama that turned me into a Wu Lei fan, I’ve watched ep. 48 so many times! 

4. Gold Panning 

I was very antagonistic towards this drama when I first started watching it but luckily, I stuck with it and it turned out to be SO GOOD. It’s very grimy and dark, but it was such a good watch! Highly recommended. It is the type of drama that you can admit to watching and recommend in any company without feeling embarrassed. I want more roles like this for Chen Feiyu.

5. The Great Shaolin 

This one started out SO GOOD, I was certain it would top all the dramas I ever watched, but then it devolved in the second half and did not live up to its promise. I’m still mad, but Zhou Yiwei is perfection and the good parts of this drama were amazing, so it still made it pretty high up on this list. 

6. Kevin Can F*** Himself

I am normally not a fan of comedies, but this one was excellent. Highly recommended! 

7. Kingdom 

I’m just not a fan of zombies, so unfortunately, this one cannot go higher, but it is so well done! I very much recommend this drama if you like horror and have high tolerance for gore. 

8. Love Between Fairy and Devil 

This was such a cute and hilarious watch, I loved it so much! It does not quite reach the level of the best drama of the year for me the way it did for some people, but it was still a good time! Highly recommended! 

9. King’s War 

I still can’t believe I made it through this entire drama without skipping! I loved it, but I’m cautious about recommending it because it is very long and very grim. It is just perfect for history lovers but maybe less so for people just looking for some entertainment. 

10. Kinnporsche 

This one would have made it way higher on the list if it had been a few episodes shorter. I completely lost interest when the whole Tawan subplot took over and I never really recovered it. 

11. The Longest Day in Chang’an 

I fully admit I watched this only for Zhou Yiwei. His performance alone would put this drama right at the top, but unfortunately, the rest of it just dragged and was full of plot holes and unlikeable characters. Lots of people sing praises for this drama but other than Zhou Yiwei’s part in it, I did not enjoy it at all. 

12. Light Chaser Rescue 

This is definitely not the worst thing I ever watched but I only recommend it if you are a Luo Yunxi fan, lol. 

13. Killer and Healer

I cannot think of a single thing to recommend when it comes to this mess.

This is where I take several characters from different Chinese media (mostly cnovels and cdrama) and run a poll on which one is the 'best'. What does best mean? It's up to you! Annals of Emperor Wen of Zhou, Part 6 (ZS01)

[Yuwen Tai rescues the Emperor and brings him to Chang'an. Alas he dies a few months later but what can you do.

Meanwhile, Gao Huan puts his own Emperor of Wei on the throne, formalising the split between Eastern and Western Wei.

Also the first appearance in these annals of one Li Hu, grandfather of a certain Li Yuan. Like Yuwen Tai, Li Hu came from the Wuchuan garrison.

Taizu spoke to the various generals, saying:

Though Gao Huan's wisdom is insufficient, he has deceptions to spare. Now he makes noise of intending to go west, but he is thinking about entering Luo. I intend to order Kuo Luo to lead more than 10 000 cavalry and infantry to draw east from Jing# province, and Wang Pi to lead 10 000 armoured soldiers and first occupy Hua province. If Huan comes west, Wang Pi is sufficient to manage to oppose and ward him off. Similarly, if he enters Luo, Kuo Luo will immediately assail Fen and Jin. I will right away quickly harness up and proceed straight towards the capital city. [We will] make him [if] he advances have worries about interior concerns, [and if] he withdraws, to have the appearance of being followed. In a single stirring we will greatly settle [matters], this is the best strategy.

Everyone in the multitude declared it good.

Autumn, 7th Month [26 July – 24 August 534], Taizu led the multitudes to issue out from Gaoping. The van army arrived in Hongnong. But Shenwu of Qi bit by bit put pressure on the capital city. Emperor Wei personally commanded the Six Armies, and stationed at Heqiao [“He Bridge”]. He ordered the [General of] Guards of the Left, Yuan Binzhi, and the [General who] Leads the Army, Husi Chun to garrison Wulao [i.e. Hulao], and dispatched messengers to announce it to Taizu. Taizu spoke to left and right, saying:

Gao Huan in several days has travelled eight or nine hundred li. Discerning what the troops are averse to, the correct thing must be to take the advantage to strike him right away. However the Ruler and Sovereign, due to the weight of the ten thousand vehicles, is unable to decide on battle, and just now hems the fords and occupies defences. Moreover the He is ten thousand li long, and to shelter behind it is difficult. If [someone] at single place obtains a crossing, the great affair is done for.

He promptly used Great Chief Controller Zhao Gui as Acting Tribunal of a Detached Circuit, to cross over from Puban and press on to Bing province, and he dispatched Great Chief Controller Li Xian, with 1 000 elite cavalry, to hasten to Luoyang.

It happened that Binzhi and Husi Chun contended for authority and did not cooperate. Binzhi thereupon abandoned Chun and turned back, lying to the Emperor by stating that Gao Huan's troops had arrived.

7th Month, dingwei [21 August], the Emperor thereupon led light cavalry from Luoyang to enter the Passes. Taizu prepared rites and guards to offer welcome, and presented himself and was received in audience at Dongyang Relay station. Taizu took off his cap, sobbed and wept, and apologized, saying:

Your Subject was unable to put a stop to the bandits and oppressors, and thereupon caused the Driving Carriage to move his favour. [I] request arrest [by] the minister of justice in accordance with the book of punishments.

The Emperor said:

Your Excellency's loyalty and integrity is revealed to court and countryside. We, due to not being virtuous, carry the weight for causing the bandits. Seeing [you] today, [We will] very much make use of [Our] shamelessness. The responsibility lies with Our person, there is nothing to assuage or apologize for.

Then he served the Emperor in making a capital at Chang'an. He flung away the grasses and weed and established an imperial court for the government of army and state. In everything he picked Taizu to decide them. He continued with increasing his conferral to Great General, Inspector of Yong province, and Combined Prefect of the Masters Writing, advanced his fief to Duke of Lüeyang commandery, to separately set up two Masters of Writing and dispose of and allot according to the situation, and to put aside Archer-Servant of the Masters of Writing. The remaining was like before. Taizu firmly declined. A decree sincerely elucidated on it, and he therefore accepted.

Earlier, when the Wei Emperor was at Luoyang, he conferred the Senior Princess of Pingyi as a match for Taizu, but they had not yet reached the joining the together and handing over when the Emperor moved west. Reaching this point, he decreed that Taizu wed her, and designated him Chief Commandant of Escort Cavalry.

8th Month [25 August – 23 September], Shenwu of Qi assailed and captured Tong Pass, and encroached upon Huayin. Taizu led the various armies to station at Bashang to wait for him. Shenwu of Qi kept behind his general Xue Jin to defend the Pass and then withdrew. Taizu therefore advanced to chastise Jin, captured his soldiers, 7 000 men, and turned back to Chang'an. He advanced in rank to Chancellor.

Winter, 10th Month [23 October – 21 November], Shenwu of Qi pushed forward Wei's King of Qinghe, Dan's son, Shanjian as ruler, and moved the capital to Ye. This was Eastern Wei.

11th Month [22 November – 20 December], he dispatched the Ceremony Similar Li Hu, together with Li Bi, Zhao Gui, and others, to chastise Cao Ni in Ling province. Hu guided the He to pour into him. Next year [i.e. 535 AD], Ni surrendered, and they moved his prominent leaders to Xianyang.

Intercalary 12th Month [20 January – 17 February 535], the Filial and Martial [xiaowu] Emperor collapsed. Taizu, together with the crowd of excellencies, settled the records, and venerated and installed Wei's King of Nanyang, Baoju, as successor. This was the Civil [wen] August Emperor.

3. Wei Wuxian right after emerging from the Burial Mounds getting revenge on Wen Chao.

2. The scene in the Burial Mounds during Wei Wuxian’s second life where all the Wens’ spirits save the juniors.

1. Kind of cheating, but: all the times Wei Ying tries to bait Lan Zhan into kicking him out of the Cloud Recesses in his second life. Including saying Lan Zhan’s his type, making a ruckus, laying on top of Lan Zhan, claiming to spy on Lan Zhan in the Cold Springs, etc.

Special mention to drunk Lan Wangji scenes. I like when he just bops Wen Ning on the head with Bichen.

3. Shen Qingqiu dragging Luo Binghe through the Holy Mausoleum and finding the Huan Hua Palace Master. Specifically, Shen Qingqiu calmly blowing away the plants and making sure none of them land on Binghe and then the reveal that the plants take root inside of people, under their skin, with the more qi they use.

2. Luo Binghe baiting Shen Qingqiu to reveal himself in his plant / mushroom body by taking the sect as a whole hostage.

1. The reveal that Luo Binghe is merging the human and deamon realms together, after they all thought it was Tianlang-jun’s doing. His whole speech about Shen Qingqiu choosing him.

Special mention to the extras where Binghe cries to convince Shen Qingqiu to let him have sex with him. (It reminds me of Tian Ye Ke and Wen Kexing crying to make Zhou Zishu let him do him. Wen Kexing and Luo Binghe would hate each other and compare notes and I think that’s wonderful)
