RIP Zia Mohyeddin (20.6.1931 - 13.2.2023)
"It would be foolish of me to say that my acting career began on the stage in a play, written by my father, at the age of 11. A lot of people who act as schoolboys become lawyers or accountants or insurance agents. But something happened to me during that first experience. I lost all sense of time and space. It was as though I had lost my sense of recognition. The people I had been rehearsing with were strangers whom I had never seen before. As for the actual setting, it appeared to be a space in another world, a dream. And although I spoke my lines, it was quite some time before I realized that it was I who was speaking."
#zia mohyeddin#death ment tw#rip#character actors#belated‚ but I only read of his passing this evening#lawrence of arabia#the hidden truth#the avengers#adam adamant lives!#the champions#man in a suitcase#hadleigh#danger man#gangsters#the jewel in the crown#khartoum#deadlier than the male#work is a four letter word#ashanti#family pride#an incredibly talented performer and a renaissance man in the arts; Zia came to the uk in the early 50s to study at RADA and quickly#established himself as a stage presence (including originating the role of Dr Aziz in A Passage to India). there followed an enviable list#of genre credits on tv‚ the roles he's probably best remembered for now in the uk‚ as well as a regular part on The Hidden Truth and scene#stealing appearances in The Avengers and Man in a Suitcase. returning to his native Pakistan‚ Zia had a very successful talk show#there were also films‚ directorships of Performing Arts institutes; clashing with the military regime in late 70s Pakistan he returned to#the uk where he produced Here and Now‚ an influential multicultural programme; he produced and starred in the first uk soap with a british#asian cast; he travelled the world giving readings of prose and poetry in Urdu‚ and he championed the arts in his home country when he#returned there again. finally he was asked to form Karachi's National Academy of Performing Arts in 2005‚ something he approached like his#life's work and of which he was immensely proud in interviews (and on which he worked tirelessly and passionately). a genuinely incredible#individual who's much more than some old tv guest spots; but i love him for those too. rip Zia.

Another loss.
Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilailhi Raaji'oon
The voice that made us fall in love with the Urdu language is no more. Zia Mohiuddin Sahib was an era in himself. A legendary performer he left his mark on theatre, TV, and especially on reciting Urdu classics - poetry and prose - in his inimitable style. No one can come close to Zia Sahab when it comes to reciting Urdu.

Come, let us raise our hands, as well –
We, the ones who do not remember the ritual of prayer
We, the ones who [do not remember] anything other than the
warmth of love,
do not know of any idol, nor any God.
Come, let us beseech that the Creator of existence may
fill sweetness in the morrow from the poison of today
Those who cannot bear the burden of passing day,
May their eyelids be unburdened of the day and night
They, whose eyes don’t have the strength to see the face of dawn,
May someone light a lamp in their night
They, whose feet have nowhere to go, no path
May someone illuminate a way to their sight
They, whose religion is lies and deceit
May they get the courage to be heretics, and the audacity to question
They, whose heads await the swords of cruelty… to them
The power to ward of the hands that slay
The hidden secret of love is a burning soul… with which
Let’s affirm today so the burning is eased
The words of truth.. which rankle the heart like a thorn
Let’s proclaim them today to relieve the affliction

Quote
Our societies still have a lingering suspicion that actors, and musicians too for that matter, do not have a proper job and therefore do not do any real work. We still regard an actor to be a vagabond and a wastrel. I am aware that our efforts can only bear fruit in a less intolerant society. I see no way out of the mediocrity which currently rules our perceptions and imaginations unless we give up making compromises. We are now living in a devastatingly tortuous period. I can offer you no words of wisdom that can mitigate the anguish we’re surrounded with. I can only hold on to my belief that work is life and there is no point in life other than work.

A personal tribute: Zia Mohyeddin, truly one of a kind
Another obituary I wish I didn’t have to write. Farewell Zia sahib. What a life – and what a contribution to the arts and progressive thinking, with your immaculate performances and recitations. Man in a Suitcase: Night Flight to Andorra (1.30, ITC, 1968)
"You know we're not in this for kicks by now, don't you?"
"I heard a story about Buck, whoever Buck might be, something about taking me behind the sheds and murdering me."
"Ha. Well, old Buck watches a lot of TV, ma'am."
#man in a suitcase#night flight to andorra#classic tv#1968#reed de rouen#jan read#freddie francis#richard bradford#peter woodthorpe#zia mohyeddin#luanshya greer#ewan hooper#edward underdown#carlos pierre#robert crewdson#peter swanwick#fred beauman#ricardo montez#charles laurence#nita lorraine#and so McGill bows out. this was probably never intended as a series finale (it was 28th in production‚ with 1.26 The Revolutionaries the#final episode shot) but it inadvertently acts as a kind of unofficial coda on the series; McGill is finally back doing the work he was#trained for‚ albeit in an unofficial capacity‚ putting together a team for a heist on behalf of the uk government. much of the exposition#is handwaved through (we never really know how McGill came to be doing this job‚ nor why he's explicitly working for the uk when the US are#also a concerned party) but there's much to enjoy in the classic heist setup of a band of uneasy allies working to their own agendas. of#these‚ the late Mohyeddin is the standout as the sole likeable member of the gang; so charming in fact that even when he pulls a knife on#an innocent girl‚ he manages to do it in such a way that he still seems perfectly reasonable and friendly. de Rouen had cowritten the only#real dud in the series‚ 1.22‚ but this is a much better script (and he bagged himself a supporting role into the bargain). Woodthorpe was a#theatre legend‚ having originated parts in both Waiting for Godot and The Caretaker‚ but he was also an infrequent supporting actor in#brit horror films and had already worked with director Francis on three pictures (inc the excellent The Skull for Amicus)
