Whenever I struggle to get paintings going, I like to use portraits as a fallback I know how to get started. Compared to my usual paintings, this one was intended to feel more severe to give off a feeling of perseverance. That's also why I emphasized the scars in this one. In a way, it was to tell myself that imperfections are fine. To ease off the pressure I put on myself. (:

An extra special commission from many, many months ago that I've held off posting until now. Drawn as a two year (May 1st, 2016) anniversary for zyonji for when they got more serious about painting. In Zyonji’s own words, from the commission prompt: It would mark the two-year anniversary of when this post of yours got me serious about learning to paint, because I wanted an icon like that but couldn't afford to commission you. Now I have both, the skill to paint nice icons and the money to commission others, so I think it would be a nice conclusion to the story to finally commission you two years later. I was very touched to have this honor, even if it’s “just” a little portrait for now. I think Zyonji has had such an amazing development as an artist, and I think you all should check them out!

After having gotten stuck on commissions some months earlier, I attempted to make a much more clean and defined style, so commissions would be less open ended. Still kept the scars present though. I really liked how that specific painting turned out.

This painting got a fun story I didn't reveal on any other site I posted this on. There's a bunch of inspirations I listed in other posts, one of them being lost-paw, while being vague about how exactly one of their in stream commissions influenced this. So, let me tell the story!

If you've only seen the paintings I make or even the art I commission for myself, then this might surprise you: Lost-paw's drawings on those streams cater to a horny audience. Even though sexual content doesn't excite me, I also don't mind it, so I took a commission slot on a whim.

As a side note, I asked for my hyena to be draw, a character I based on myself. You might call 'em my fursona if you want. I tried to make 'em as much like myself as I could, aside of them being a striped hyena and also having more feminine features. Though no boobs. As mentioned earlier, sexual content doesn't get me horny, so I never payed those features any mind.

Now, back to the stream. My commission is up next. That meant I described what I was looking for in PMs and sent my references. Then the unexpected question. What about the bits? What's up down there? A question I had no answer for. It truly made me panic as I tried to figure out an answer. And that's ultimately the "design elements" I canonized from that commission. Being put on the spot in the moment made me realize that it's fine to not fully fit the norm. That slight hint of an outline of a dick doesn't make 'em any less feminine. Instead it just adds a bit of visible lived history.

I remember that I made this painting at a time I was struggling with motivation. I was applying to get into a tax thing specific for artists and it was mentally draining and demoralizing to have to repeatedly justify the artistic merit of my work. But I still wanted to paint something, so I did what I've found work for me before. Spite is a good motivation. I decided I'd just paint a simple portrait until either everyone is sick of my art, or I'm motivated to do other art again. So, the next few pictures are very similar to this one. (:
