I just saw someone say the words "jokingly gaslight" this might be a good time to reintroduce the internet to the terms "lying" or perhaps "pranking" or even just "joking" on it's own

People refuse to be loved the same way dogs want to throw up in the most inconvenient places.
You're a social pack animal with enough awareness of yourself and enough theory of mind to understand that you're unwell and that the others around you don't want to see you unwell. But you've also got like 3 brain cells going on in there so the most logical solution to this problem is to hide in places where they won't see you, so you can feel bad without anyone else being aware of it, so nobody else will be upset by this.
This feels like an excellent idea even when you've been on the other side of it and you know how much you hate it when someone you love is struggling and won't let you help. But no matter how much the people who love you won't enjoy cleaning up your vomit from the middle of the living room, at the end of the day that's better for everyone involved than having to first spend 3 hours trying to find where the problem is, because something's wrong and you went out of your way to make sure it's hard to find.
It's hard to go to people you love for help when people who didn't deserve your love and trust have punished you for doing so. It's counterintuitive, it goes against what makes sense to you. Don't beat yourself up for doing what instinctively feels right.
But for the love of god let them pull you out from under the couch before you get it on the hardest-to-reach spot on the carpet.

there's been a lot of obnoxious pop history trends in the last few years but the bizarre total sanitization of vikings/pirates has to be one of the worst. like sorry to the queer neopagan anarchy symbol in bio twitter user community but like. are you aware both vikings and pirates enthusiastically traded slaves

Book Review | In the Garden: Essays on Nature and Growing
“A garden, no matter how good it is, must never completely satisfy.” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ In the Garden is a collection of essays on, well, gardening. I had already read another collection in the same series ‘At the Pond’ about nature swimming, which I really enjoyed, and was very much looking forward to this book as well. It did not disappoint. Not all essays were completely working for me, but that’s a…

Some rando: This character should not have the chance to become a better person
Me: Why
Same person: Because they are a bad person!
Me: But what if that character was allowed to become a better person so that they are no longer a bad person?
Same person: You’re an abuse apologist

Book Review | If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio

Oliver Marks has just been released from prison, and is finally ready to tell Detective Colborne what really happened when his classmate was killed ten years ago. As young actors at an elite conservatory, Oliver and his classmates played the same roles – villain, hero, temptress – over and over again, both off stage and onstage. But when the casting changes, good-natured rivalry turns ugly, and the plays spill dangerously over into real life. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I had seen If We Were Villains by @sureasmel around but I didn’t read it until my friend @judithbleeker recommended and lent it to me. It’s not the type of book I read (anymore) and it was very stressful at times, but I was pulled in by the promise of Shakespearian theatre and very soon I was completely hooked. 📚 What struck me most was the emotional complexity of these characters. Difficult backgrounds, trauma, insecurity and forced vulnerability, set in this tiny, isolated, cult-like academic world, then add the strong emotions of the Shakespearian stage and you have fireworks. The way tension builds and ebbs away (but never completely) only to return stronger is masterfully done. 📚 I love how Shakespeare is interwoven in the story, more than just a few references, it’s the very fabric this world is built out of, and underscores some of the characters’ most pivotal moments. They really live Shakespeare. Someday I plan to reread this book again in conjunction with all those plays. Though you genuinely don’t need to to understand and enjoy the book, but it does give the story that much more depth. 📚 A very well crafted book that you should definitely check out if you either like Shakespeare or murder mystery/thriller stories. 📚 (Content warnings below, may contain spoilers) . . . . . . . .   CW’s: violence, abuse, blood, gore, death, suicide (off-page) . #ifwewerevillains #mlrio #shakespeare #bookreview #bookworm #bookish #bookblogger #amreading #bookgram #instareads #bookishlove #readmorebooks #bookstagrammers #bookcollector #readinglife #bookwormproblems #bookobsessed #bedtimereading #readerforlife #bookshark #bookpicture #bookishphoto #bookreviewer #booksaremagic #bookblog #goodreads #review #bookishproblems https://www.instagram.com/p/CpIEcPNLZWy/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Writers, please, please, please, I am begging you
I know we don't vibe with Mary Sues, and I know we like watching characters fail...
But if your character is the world's best assassin, they shouldn't be botching nearly every single step of every single job just because the plot demands it. If your character is one of the greatest fighters to ever live, they can't badly lose every single fight the plot throws at them and then barely win the final confrontation. If your character is a competent military strategist, they need at least a few small successes during the course of the plot. If your character is an experienced leader, they can't be constantly making the kind of missteps that realistically would cause their subordinates to lose confidence in them.
If your character is good at something. Show them being good at it.

btw i love how during the doggy heaven convo ed at no point contests the core issue which is that izzy is just calling stede ed’s pet. like as far as ed’s concerned stede IS his pet like that’s not even the main issue it’s just whether he gets to have one. like the reason it even works is bc ed considers “you don’t get to have a pet so you gotta kill stede” to be internally consistent with the spirit of his no pets rule like girl you’re fucking insane you could just said that your human boy bestie isn’t a dog and walked out but you didn’t.
