Two books that I have read and LOVED this last year—The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon, and The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang. For The Priory of the Orange Tree: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ It certainly lived up to its reputation as a LONG book. The build is slow, mounting, and a bit difficult to wrap your head around at first (as is the case with any epic fantasy). But it truly paid off. Gorgeous character development, compelling story, and a tender resolution. There are ample examples of strong, lovingly crafted female characters and a delightful LGBTQ flourish. I devoured her novel in under a week and immediately googled, “Novels like the Priory of the Orange Tree.” For The Poppy War: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I went wild for the female empowerment present in the first installment of this fantasy trilogy. I was caught off guard and simultaneously enraptured by the first sentence. Side note: thank you for reminding fantasy readers that women still get their periods, regardless of the setting!! I loved her time at the academy, and could sense the budding threat of war in a way that felt more true to what the word actually means than what circumstances I normally find it thrown around in regarding these fantasy novels. There were some parts that lost me once the book took a turn away from everything that initially sucked me in (hence the four) and I SERIOUSLY advise looking up the TW/CW for this series before you start. It. Gets. Dark. But I simply cannot stand to leave a started series unfinished, so I’m on the hunt for the next book. 📖Oh wowww I finally completed The Crossfire Saga and I am totally obsesssseddd with Gideon and Eva. these both mean the world to me right now.

📖Arghhhh!! I'm gonna miss everyone in the crossfire series. Why did @sylvia_day had to end the series ? I want more and more and more of G and E.

📖The chemistry, sizzling tension, banter and teasing, love, care and trust between Eva and Gideon was off the charts.The sex scenes were written incredibly well. Really hot hot hot love scenes Teeheee!!

📖The supporting characters were stupendous especially Cary. He is a very interesting guy, I hope the author will write a book about him in the future. And Eva's mom OMFG 😧I didn't expect at all that she would die in the end (spoilers).

📖I am really glad that Gideon's family were all there for him in the end. Eva's friends are sooooooo cool.

📖The secrets in the whole series were coming left and right.... It blew my fuckin mind I LOVEEE IT.

📖Gideon with LUCKY the puppy 🐶 was so cute

📖Over the course of FIVE BOOKS these guys have gone through so many ups and downs, dramas and breaks finally they had an beautiful happily ever after. 🥺💖💖😇 - the ENDING was Simply beautiful.

📖 And I hear there is going to be a TV show adaptation, I can't wait to see Gideon and Eva on screen. They are going to rock the world 🌐🌍😎

Earthlings by Sayaka Murata. . SPOILERS AHEAD . Ok, I finished this book yesterday and… wtf. Ok here it goes: Natsuki is an 11 year old girl who has always felt like an outsider in her family. She finds comfort in her cousin Yuu of the same age, who she meets once a year at her grandmother’s home for the summer holidays. Soon you start to realize the abuse they are both suffering in their nuclear families, and needing each other for survival, their friendship turns into a romantic relationship. Back home with her parents and her sister, you realize how deep Natsuki’s abuse goes. From verbal and physical abuse at home to sexual harassment and abuse at school. Natsuki’s perception of humankind is corrupted from a very young age and she only finds comfort in the idea that she and her cousin Yuu are Aliens. This idea does not dissipate in her adulthood, it even becomes reinforced in her asexual marriage. The book deals with the concept of society; what makes it and what sets you free from it. Talks about rebelling against the factory (as Natsuki calls it) that keeps tabs on your every move. How do you break the rules to become separated from it. Like a checklist of taboo, Earthlings is a book that will challenge both your perception of normality and your peace of mind. . If I’m gonna be completely honest, what these people needed was therapy. Raybearer (Raybearer, #1) by Jordan Ifueko ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Here are 5 reasons to read Raybearer. 1. Gripping well structured plot, strong concept, lots of emotions and Setting of the palaces I loved the concept of a cursed child born to destroy the person she was taught to be loyal and grew to love. The plot is not just filled with amazing characters, world and twists, there is so much emotions, heart and soul in this book. 2. Many themes and layers The main theme of the story is Justice, revenge, belongingness and writing your own story without influence of any person. There are layers of family expectations, patriarchy, insecurity, curse, guilt complexion, loneliness, imperialism, political intrigue, trust, betrayal, manipulations, power, and greed. 3. Immersive detailed world World is imaginative, vivid, specularly rich and detailed world. There is so many elements in the world itself - Brilliant characterization and development; twelve realms have its own customs, religions, cultures, beliefs, and festivals ; concept of magic and Ray and how it works ; and Prince’s council. 4. Brilliant characterization and development Tarisai is my most favorite character. I loved Kirah, Sanjeet, and Dayo for believing in Tarisai, never losing hope in her. I also liked The Lady’s friends, especially Woo In who played interesting role. I hated The Lady and Emperor. 5. Perfect end That last couple of chapters are fantastic filled with lots of emotions, lost of surprises. There isn’t any cliffhanger but it left me hungry for next book. Overall, this is perfection. I highly recommend this book to all fans of YA / High Fantasy. But when the casting changes, good-natured rivalry turns ugly, and the plays spill dangerously over into real life. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I had seen If We Were Villains by @sureasmel around but I didn’t read it until my friend @judithbleeker recommended and lent it to me. It’s not the type of book I read (anymore) and it was very stressful at times, but I was pulled in by the promise of Shakespearian theatre and very soon I was completely hooked. 📚 What struck me most was the emotional complexity of these characters. Difficult backgrounds, trauma, insecurity and forced vulnerability, set in this tiny, isolated, cult-like academic world, then add the strong emotions of the Shakespearian stage and you have fireworks. The way tension builds and ebbs away (but never completely) only to return stronger is masterfully done. 📚 I love how Shakespeare is interwoven in the story, more than just a few references, it’s the very fabric this world is built out of, and underscores some of the characters’ most pivotal moments. They really live Shakespeare. Someday I plan to reread this book again in conjunction with all those plays. Though you genuinely don’t need to to understand and enjoy the book, but it does give the story that much more depth. 📚 A very well crafted book that you should definitely check out if you either like Shakespeare or murder mystery/thriller stories. 📚 (Content warnings below, may contain spoilers) . . . . . . . . Arkansas reading update: Got this adorable vintage copy of Valley of the Dolls at the Little Free Library on Harrison, AR. Today’s read is pictured with everyday mask and my vax sticker as a bookmark.
