the worst part of being a voracious reader is reading all these amazing series that deserve a vibrant fandom and movie/show deals yesterday, but there are only a few passionate fans doing their best and like five fanarts. mother I crave more attention for my book blorbos

Sort of related to my last post, but here's a list of all the explicitly/canonically aspec characters in media I can think of who have fulfilling relationships (romantic, platonic, familial, etc) and lives with or without sex being a part of it. Media does a lot to push the idea that asexuality is a flaw, so it's always nice to see positive aspec representation.
Books:
Ekundayo Kunleo (Raybearer) - Major side character, Asexual
Fleet Captain Breq Mianaai (Imperial Radch) - POV character, Asexual
Medic (Imperial Radch) - Side character in the last two books, Asexual (implied aromantic? Don't quote me on it)
Podcasts:
Arkady Patel (The Strange Case of Starship Iris) - A main character, Grey-Ace
Sir Fitzroy Maplecourt (The Adventure Zone: Graduation) - A Player Character, word-of-god confirmed Asexual
Jonathan Sims (The Magnus Archives) - Protagonist, Asexual
Comics:
Tori Spring (Heartstopper/Solitaire) - Major side character/Protagonist, Asexual
Isaac Henderson (Heartstopper) - Side character with relevance in season two of the TV show, Aro-Ace
Uncle Jim (Cool Uncle) - Main Character, Aro-Ace
Kim (Boo! It's Sex) - A main character, Asexual
Rae (Always Human) - Side Character, Aro-Ace
TV:
Raphael Santiago (Shadowhunters) - Major side character, Asexual
Lilith Clawthorne (The Owl House) - Major side character, word-of-god confirmed Aro-Ace
Peridot (Steven Universe) - Major side character, word-of-god confirmed Aro-Ace
Feel free to add more if you can think of them!

I got wildly sick of white European farm boy fantasy a while back. Thank goodnes I didn't have to look hard to find other things, and plenty of them (literally this is not my whole collection, I just couldn't ffit everything in the picture)!
Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko follows Tar as she finds her family in an African-inspired fantasy world. The haunting "made of me, and me is mine" still echoes in my head. That and Dayo literally being the adoptive uncle who gets his nibling an elephant.
These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong explores Chinese and Russian rival crime families in fantasy 1920s Shanghai. For my Shakespeareans in the audience, yes, it's also a retelling of Romeo and Juliet. For those of you with bug phobias, beware.
Tha Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri is often described as having morally gray lesbians, and that's true. But while Priya and Malini are compelling and fascinating to follow, I am HERE for the Hirana. Semi-sentient, possibly evil temple who is soft for its favorite trainee priestess in hiding? YES.
Jade City by Fonda Lee follows the Green Bones in fantasy Asia, as two warring gangs find their places in a rapidly modernizing world. Shae and Hilo's relationship in particular is fascinating.
Full Disclosure: I haven't finished Axie Oh's The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea, but the first couple of chapters are a WOW and I can't wait to finish this Korean-inspired fairy tale retelling.
The Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan was sheer joy from start to finish, and I have not yet stopped asking "What the Actual HELL, Wenzhi???" Inspired by the myth of Chang'e, this book is a must-read. (The sequel is out November 2022 and I am so excited!!!)
Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao took me by the throat and literally did not let me go until the book ended--and even then, it less let me go and more threw me against the boards until round 2. The triangle is the strongest shape, and this has phenomenal poly and disability representation.
Another full disclosure: I haven't started Judy Lin's A Magic Steeped in Poison, but I am so excited for it. There is literal and figurative tea promised, and I am here for it.
The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah scratched a reading itch I didn't even know I had, and I love this book so much. It has cinnaprinces, a Loulie, jinn, forty thieves, and stories within stories.
Last full disclosure of the post: I also haven't read the doorstopper that is RR Virdi's The First Binding, but it is a heckin' chonk of a book that I am super excited to dive into.

Just wanted to say that it is alright to be fans of books like LegendBorn, Children of Blood and Bone, and Raybearer but if you are not Black you are not the targeted audience. They deserve your support but the author is not writing with a nonblack audience in mind. The same goes for other nonwhite authors no matter where they come from. Usually these authors are writing for themselves and ppl who look like them. Seeing ourselves is much more important than whether or not white readers like it.

raybearer is so great because there's not one wasted word, no character is insufferable, the mommy issues are INSANE right up to the very end, AND the worldbuilding is juicy. raybearer is the first book ive ever read that has clothing descriptions that dont bore me to tears. whenever i read a twist id have to put the book down literally like asdjhflasj it was so wild

Upcoming (Potential) New A-Spec Characters in TV
Luffy from One Piece (Netflix)
Tumblr media
Not really canon but as long as in the adaptation he doesn't feel attracted to anyone fits the criteria
Alastor from Hazbin Hotel (TBD)
Tumblr media
Canonly aroace, has a line that can be read as indicative of his asexuality in the Youtube pilot
Vernestra from The Acolyte (Disney+)
Tumblr media
Canonly aroace, hopefully they don't erase her orientation in the TV show
Ekundayo from Raybearer (Netflix)
Tumblr media
(fanart by @/souldagger )
He is asexual biromantic in the books
Please add more potential a-spec characters coming to TV if you know any, I know WicDiv (which includes asexual character Dionysus) had an adaptation announced in 2015 but it's probably cancelled by now), with so few a-spec representation I just want to know of any potential characters coming to TV in the future!

Canon Aspec Swag Qualifiers: Ekundayo Kunleo vs Keladry of Mindelan
Tumblr media
Ekundayo Kunleo from the Raybearer duology by Jordan Ifueko who is biromantic asexual "No label explicitly stated because it’s a fantasy setting, but from context, biro ace" "He's from a high fantasy series and, as indicated above, doesn't use a label, but it's pretty textually obvious that he's specifically asexual biromantic."
vs
Tumblr media
Keladry of Mindelan from Protector of the Small by Tamora Pierce who is aromantic aspec, as confirmed by the author.

Obviously the Redemptor thing is more pressing, but the Council’s second order of business should be fixing that fucked up lodestone system. Having to travel to literally every realm just to magically transport to a specific one is complete horseshit. And, even though I’m aware it only works that way to manufacture tension later in the book, I’m not even going to count it against Ifueko’s writing; because, if you’ve ever lived anywhere with shitty public transportation, you know firsthand how painfully realistic this system is.

sometimes I think that pain and misery is all we have left in this world. we are on the brink of a precipice, wars, droughts, climate change, economic collapse, injustices all around and it really makes me wonder why I'm doing anything anyway because we are all doomed. but then I wake up each day, and there is a tree in front of my house with new flower buds, my mum smiles when she sees me and I saw a wide eyed newborn baby girl two days ago. people will be dancing in the streets soon and nights will be filled with laughter. the sand and the sea are waiting for me, and there is music and art and books that I haven't gotten my hands on yet. we may be going toward a terrible future, but we may still be in time to change it, because life is worth living no matter what comes next.
I want to live, because life is... life is worth it. Because as long as we can imagine a better world, we should stick around to see it. Even if it doesn't exist yet. Even if we have to build it from scratch, brick by muddy brick.
– Redemptor (Jordan Ifueko - Raybearer #2)

Some of y’all’s need to add racism and realism to fantasy when Black ppl are involved does not go unnoticed and needs to be studied. Like there is no reason y’all should be thinking that Ariel is gonna experience racism when she goes on land. Like at all. This isn’t a historical period piece meant for education or to tell of historical figures. It’s literal fantasy. How are y’all gonna react when the books and other ideas created by Black ppl and for Black ppl start airing??? Are y’all gonna be this weird? Cuz imma tell you now: y’all will not ruin LegendBorn, Raybearer, Children of Blood and Bone, etc for me. Period. Critiques are allowed but when your “criticism” starts sounding like antiblack rhetoric spread by white ppl then we have a huge problem and you need to reevaluate yourself. Quickly. And another thing. Let’s use common sense when discussing TLM. Why would Carlotta, or Vanessa for that matter, be wearing a crown??? Noma is Prince Eric’s mother and has been since the day she was casted. Be fr. Also, it makes no sense for Vanessa to be Black when Eric never even saw Ariel to begin with.
