Dangerous Game Preview!
Jekyll and Hyde the Musical is a masterpiece. I was listening to one of my favorite songs from it and I thought a Criminal Minds / Spencer Reid version of it would be painful fun for all of us.
This fic takes place in Season 13. Spencer doesn’t teach during his sabbaticals because that would ruin the efforts of his “Hyde”. Instead of an elixir/potion that forces character changes, I thought that Spencer having DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder, like Hankel) would fit with the BAU better. Spoilers for most of the show below the cut!
Here's how Spencer developed his alter and his DID:
Back in the earlier seasons, Spencer struggles to compartmentalize his job. So much so that in 1x06 (L.D.S.K), an alter begins forming to cope with the “life-taking” aspect of his job. After 2x14 (Revelations), this alter takes on a larger role in Spencer’s life, helping him deal with his dilaudid addiction and his PTSD. He eventually seeks help for his DID (unbeknownst to the team) and starts coping with his job and life in a healthier way.
In Season 12, while being in prison, Spencer retreats back into his mind and his DID and alter resurfaces as he struggles to cope with his surroundings. After being released from prison, Spencer realizes that he does not have the control he had in the earlier seasons over his alter (Nathan).
I’m doing my best to keep this as true as I can to what I know of D.I.D. In this case, Spencer is both the host and the gatekeeper, but after he's released from prison, the gatekeeper role begins dissolving and the lines between Spencer and Nathan begin to blur. Spencer struggles to conceal his disorder and Nathan starts doing some illegal shit.

jekyll and hyde spencer fic!
so there will be a jekyll and hyde spencer reid fic coming! i’ve written a few chapters because i hate myself… anyway i thought i would give background since i’m basing this (loosely) fic on the musical! spoilers for the 1990 jekyll and hyde musical below the cut!
cw: suicide, murder?
in the musical, jekyll uses himself as a test subject after being rejected by the hospitals board of governors. jekyll is engaged to a rich girl (emma) and hyde begins a relationship/affair with a prostitute (lucy). hyde becomes a serial killer, killing everyone who denied jekyll test subjects. lucy and jekyll become friends(?) idk they kiss and he gives her money to run away from hyde with. hyde kills lucy out of jealousy. during jekyll’s wedding to emma, hyde comes out, kills someone and takes emma hostage. jekyll is “awoken” by emma’s cries and takes his life, killing himself and hyde.
obviously i’m going to use the musical very loosely- mostly as an inspiration and for chapter titles- because i ain’t hurting myself like that. instead of a formula, it’s DID formed out of trauma and no suicide because i don’t vibe with that. :)

Wasteland - Friends Are A Fate
Wasteland
Almost twenty-two years ago, Haley Brooks and Aaron Hotchner had their first child. They weren't ready to become parents so they put her up for adoption. Weeks before her twenty-second birthday, Callie Moore graduates from the FBI Academy at Quantico only to return home to a grieving sister and two open adoption records. Or, the one where Callie has been following the BAU since witnessing a murder as a child. Turns out, she's not only a recent graduate of the FBI Academy, but Aaron Hotchner's firstborn.
Warnings are ever-changing to adapt to the story as it's written but as a general rule, 18+ only
Warnings: None, really. Set in season 6
Masterlist here.
4. Wasteland: Friends Are A Fate- Callie officially meets the BAU.
“All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way” - Leo Tolstoy
Callie wasn’t sure to expect when she walked in that door. Chaos, maybe? Especially after the clash of personalities she had just experienced outside, she had no idea what to expect from the rest of the team. Jack had been happy to see her, as was Jessica. Callie didn’t think Jack really understood what was going on, but it was very encouraging to be tackled by her little brother as she passed the threshold into their fathers house. Thankfully, due to her own interests in the BAU and the brief summaries Aaron had given her, Callie could identify the rest of the team by sight.
Joining her father in the kitchen was David Rossi, one of the founding fathers of the BAU. Aaron apparently called him “Dave”. Leaning on the counter with a wine glass in her hand was Emily Prentiss. Callie had to pull her eyes away: Emily was extremely pretty. “Callie! There you are!” Aaron’s voice pulled her to consciousness. Callie smiled, her hands feeling extremely empty, even though he had told her not to bring anything.
“Hi!” She let go of Jack’s hand as Hotch walked over and pulled her into a hug. As soon as they parted, Jack latched onto her again.
“Everyone, this is Callie Moore.” Callie did her best to smile at each of the team members, although she found herself wincing at Spencer and Derek. That awkward interaction in the hallway wasn’t going to go away anytime soon, she could tell. “Callie, meet the team.”
----
Dinner was… fine. Sitting on the couch with Jack while Aaron, Jessica, and the team cleaned up in the kitchen meant Callie was forced to do some introspective thinking. Again. God, she hated introspective thinking. But here she was, watching Jack play with his toys, thoughts buzzing around in her head. The team was relatively nice. Penelope a little nosy, Spencer a little shy. Emily didn’t have much to say, but then neither did anyone else. All in all, it was a pretty awkward family dinner. If Jack hadn’t been there, they probably would have talked about work. Instead, they (for the most part) let Jack lead the conversation. Which, unfortunately for Callie, meant lots of questions about Callie.
He asked her what her favorite colors were: “pink and yellow”.
Who her favorite superhero was: “Iron Man”.
What her favorite book was: “A Tale of Two Cities”, and who wrote it: “Charles Dickens”.
Who her best friend was: “my sister, Addy”.
The mention of Addison confused Jack, so Callie decided to tell him that Addy and Callie weren’t really siblings, they just grew up together, so they were basically sisters. This calmed the sea of confusion behind his eyes and he continued on with his barrage of questions until Aaron stopped him by reminding him there was food on his plate.
----
“... join them, Callie?” She snapped back to reality.
“What? I’m sorry, I wasn’t paying attention. Hotch laughed slightly.
“I can see that. I was saying that the team is going for a walk and they were wondering if you wanted to join them.”
“Oh! Yeah, yeah. Are you coming?” Callie stood up. She could see the team bundling up with their jackets and weapons in the entryway.
“No, I’ve got to put Jack to bed. Are you going back to DC tonight?” Jack grabbed onto her hand at the mention of his name. Callie leaned down next to him and gave him a big hug.
“Mhm. I’ve still got to get used to my apartment before my first real day.” It was directed at Hotch. She turned to Jack. “But I will see you again very soon, okay buddy?” He nodded.
“Okay, Callie. I love you.” Callie felt her heart break.
“I love you too Jack. Be good for Dad, okay?” He nodded and hugged Callie again. Callie stood up and walked around the coffee table. Hotch had tears in his eyes, even if he was about to pretend he didn’t. “I’ll see you soon, too, right?”
“Yeah, when the job allows it.” There was a beat of silence. Callie thought about how much easier this was with Jack. “Be safe, kiddo, okay?” Callie laughed.
“Easier said than done with our jobs I’m afraid.”
“I know. Just… try to be careful at least.” Callie nodded and began to walk away.
“Will do, Hotch!”
“You can call me Dad, you know!” He called after her. Callie smiled softly.
“Will do, Dad.” She grabbed her coat and her gun and followed the team out of her father’s house.
