The Lieutenant Part I
Tumblr media
Backing lore under the cut. Character Bio in Part II.
A long time ago, I alluded to a parcel. And never mentioned it again. It got cast aside in favor of life. Since then, I’ve made several versions of this post. It’s too long to condense with no context.
In my fantasy world, one of the primary background forces is an elven noble, Lord Saubriel Mersephane. He has a long-standing rivalry with Skala’s High Arcane Council. The same council which took Beliaer and Vandril from their family and trained them as saboteurs. The same council our main protagonist is loyal to. In his efforts to undermine them, Saubriel invented many weapons. Most were never used, and some partially. Until he created the drones.
Drones are cyborgs, enhanced by magic and chemicals. They are created from fallen soldiers, using time-based magic to ensnare their souls before they can vacate the body. The portions of the body damaged or missing are then replaced by reverse-engineered technology, recovered from one of Skala’s greatest foes. Chemicals and strengthening enchantments are then applied, to preserve and acclimate the body to its new features in a short amount of time. Finally, all Phase I drones were outfitted with a spinal implant that allowed remote mental manipulation. It was crude and partial, but enabled Mersephane to ‘program’ his army past months of rehabilitation and therapy, straight into ‘battle’ mode. Unfortunately, this sent them all into an unstable bloodlust. Instead of attacking the Council and defending Skalans from other dangers, they killed whatever stood in their path.
After several rampages, Mersephane gave up and had them deprogrammed and released. They immediately disbanded and turned themselves in to High Administrator Chauvelard. Most re-assimilated into society. But there were exceptions.

Reshelling is Hard
Tumblr media
Long post ahead.
I don’t do emotional attachment. Not with most people, and especially not with objects. They’re hunks of matter that will pass away with time. Only problem is, when you put a metaphorical piece of your soul into something, a part of you goes with it. It sticks, and forces the object to reflect the thoughts placed into it.
There are things in life I’d never detach from. Like my Bible, favorite action figures, or the first CD I bought. Some of my BJDs are on that list.
I’ve owned my Doll Leaves Noir longest. He’s been with me for four of my eight years in the hobby. He was the first doll I really wanted that I got. And I’ve always been inspired by his face. I like his angular eyes and mischievous smile. He makes a great male, a great female, and everywhere in between. But with such flexible features, he can be too transparent.
I remember during the first release, a lot of Noirs went through the same pattern. Someone would buy one, try several different looks on it, then sell it. They couldn’t bond, because they weren’t sure how to style the doll.
I’ve accepted that Noir is a chameleon. He’s a sculpt that will never settle in one look, except for a favored few. Mine went through three different phases before he became the Beetle.
For a long while I was happy with Beliaer. He posed well, fit into most clothes, and was easy to take places. But over time, I became intimate with the character. The Beetle has been my roleplay main on World of Warcraft for several years. And a plot focus in my own fantasy world. I’ve learned him well. Things about the doll began to bother me.
Beliaer is a tall, stocky man. Grotesquely muscular. His people are olive-brown with rounded features and long ears. Noir fits some of these, but there are glaring differences. Most notably the skin and physique. The Doll Leaves body is an average 60cm, and outside of pectorals, not athletic. To simulate height and weight, I’d need a doll at least 72cm, tan, and built like a bench-presser.
For a long time, I thought I’d be able to find a new body to put Noir on. But nothing I liked came up. EIDs were too heavy, and anything close in height wasn’t muscular enough. Or I didn’t like the make. Then came doubts about the sculpt. I fell out with Noir’s cartoony proportions. I still admire him, but he has grown too unrealistic for Beliaer. I began ‘renting’ his body to other heads. It has been over a year since he’s been complete for more than a few days.
Long story short, I ran across a well-priced, more realistic doll. He’s not as tall as he should be, but scale is secondary to sculpt accuracy. It’s the second major reshelling I’ve done, and it’s bittersweet. I won’t be selling my Noir, but where we go from here is a mystery.
Tumblr media
This is one of the last times he’ll appear before I remake him. Or her. New Beliaer will get all of his stuff, minus the clothes. New Beliaer will be a pain to dress. I’m trusting he’ll be like Noir, and I can stay satisfied with a smaller wardrobe. I’ll post some pictures once he gets here.
Goodnight, Old Friend. It’s been a grand four years. You’ve served me well.

Slightly Fiendish.
Dollshe Saint is my resin doppelganger. It’s vaguely unsettling to share a face with a figure sculpt beloved by hundreds.

I’ve been drawing, but have no time for colours. Finished some doll faceups, but didn’t take pictures. Work is eating my time.
I used to be huge into Transformers. Kind of swinging back into it. This is Shifter; a retired Decepticon air warrior. A master of the sword. He was a minor character in my stories, but a special one.

This bar doesn’t seem low. In fact, I’d say it’s quite ambitious. I know it feels like the years rush by. But don’t forget; sometimes, you need to ease into things.
All considered, you survived 2016. It was a crapshoot of a year. Still you did it.  Sounds hollow coming through a screen. But we are proud of you. Keep fighting the good one. You are succeeding, one day at a time.
Small list of New Years Resolutions. Someone slap me if I don’t get at least a couple of these done by this time next year.
