Most purpose is more burden than glory. You just choose your burden. And trust me, you never wanna be the guy who avoids it ’cause you can’t live with the burden.

The only Avenger to have lifted Thor’s hammer aside from the god of thunder himself, in the MCU, the android Vision made his first MCU appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Created as a vessel for that film’s titular villain, Vision gained sentience after Tony Stark uploaded his AI, JARVIS, into the shell before Ultron could take over it himself. An Infinity Stone fused with the AI and created a life-form with powers unique to this world. Still learning what it means to be alive, Vision finds consolation in conversing with Wanda Maximoff.
Vision is unique – a little more fantastical than human characters like Iron Man and Captain America. Where did you start when trying to integrate an android into the MCU?
“Over time, the MCU has gradually embraced very super-hero-looking characters, and Vision was kind of the first step in that direction for me. We didn’t have to worry about a reality for him coming from a specific culture, and we didn’t have to worry about the reality of him needing to be mechanical in some way. So it felt like a good opportunity to actually use the design from the comics and try to find realistic ways to render the same sort of silhouettes.
“We did a lot of variations for Vision because he’s one of those characters that could go in a number of different directions. Joss [Whedon] had initially wanted to keep him flesh-colored with cut lines or some other kind of styling or detailing over his face and body. So we had done a lot of variations based on that, but I was always interested in trying to pitch-in some version of the comic-book-inspired Vision. He was a chance to explore something new.” – Ryan Meinerding, Head of Visual Development (Art by Ryan Meinerding and Roberto Fernandez Castro)
