A mess of art, general shitposts, and important tidbits I want to share.
Anyway, if you’d like to support pro-Jewish, pro-trans fantasy works right now in addition to boycotting Harry Potter and the Thousand and One Antisemitic Stereotypes, please consider the works of @shiraglassman. Shira is an independent Jewish author who’s written multiple works of fantasy set in the mythical country of Perach, following the adventures of a Jewish queen and her wife.
You want disabled characters? You got ‘em.
You want trans characters? You got ‘em.
You want queer characters? You got ‘em.
You want characters of color? You got ‘em.
You want dragons? You got ‘em.
You want wizards? You got ‘em.
You want Jewish characters? THEY’RE ALL JEWISH.
You want mystery, romance, adventure, “that really amazing fanfic you read that one time that will live rent-free in your head forever” vibes, and the assurance that every effort is made to ensure really horrible stereotypes are NOT being used? You got that, too.
And if that sounds like it gets you, you can get it, right here. And consider a reblog to share with a friend or two!
(I am going to ask Shira that if this crosses her dash, could you kindly add the links to other sites, because I basically never buy books new and have no idea where, outside The Cursed Forest, they are available.)
one of the more valuable things I’ve learned in life as a survivor of a mentally unstable parent is that it is likely that no one has thought through it as much as you have.
no, your friend probably has not noticed they cut you off four times in this conversation.
no, your brother didn’t realize his music was that loud while you were studying.
no, your bff or S.O. doesn’t remember that you’re on a tight deadline right now.
no, no one else is paying attention to the four power dynamics at play in your friend group right now.
a habit of abused kids, especially kids with unstable parents, is the tendency to notice every little detail. We magnify small nuances into major things, largely because small nuances quickly became breaking points for parents. Managing moods, reading the room, perceiving danger in the order of words, the shift of body weight….it’s all a natural outgrowth of trying to manage unstable parents from a young age.
Here’s the thing: most people don’t do that. I’m not saying everyone else is oblivious, I’m saying the over analysis of minor nuances is a habit of abuse.
I have a rule: I do not respond to subtext. This includes guilt tripping, silent treatments, passive aggressive behavior, etc. I see it. I notice it. I even sometimes have to analyze it and take a deep breath and CHOOSE not to respond. Because whether it’s really there or just me over-reading things that actually don’t mean anything, the habit of lending credence to the part of me that sees danger in the wrong shift of body weight…that’s toxic for me. And dangerous to my relationships.
The best thing I ever did for myself and my relationships was insist upon frank communication and a categorical denial of subtext. For some people this is a moral stance. For survivors of mentally unstable parents this is a requirement of recovery.
With vanilla extract being a meme, I wanted to share some black history of Edmond Albius a black slave who revolutionized vanilla pollination.
He used a technique he learned of pollinating melons to polinate the orchids to create the vanilla beans. Vanilla was rare and a luxury mainly due to only being able to be pollinated by its natural pollinator in Mexico.
unfortanely, he didnt receive any money for his discovery despite being called the main man who revolutionized pollination, he died in poverty...
Our Republic are petitioning the Scottish Parliament to end legal loopholes for the Monarchy.
The former Queen and new King’s lawyers can refuse to sign off on laws unless the Scottish Government exempts the Monarchy.
Basically the King can hold back progress unless the Scottish Government writes into law that the monarchy doesn’t actually have to follow it.
from today (january 9, 2023) until january 30th you can stream for free about 60 works from indigenous filmmakers courtesy of the media city film festival. includes films from alanis obomsawin, macarthur recipient sky hopinka, and many more.
This is probably my most well known embroidery animation. The main goal with this one was to see how complex I could make a character design in this medium and still have it be feasible to make. The answer is: about this complex, lol. After this one I began bringing in bits of fabric so that I could still have complex designs but make things a little faster for myself.
idk whats funnier: that tumblr got people to spend multiples of $7.99 to add fake verification checkmarks to their blog to ""make fun of"" twitter's latest fuckup, or that these checkmarks literally do not show up for mobile users and thats why i had no idea this amazing feat of opportunistic capitalism was even happening until just now
