So I decided to use a crazy method to learn German

It’s definitely crazy but I really want to try it. The method in question is this. “Learning” a language in 7 days. 

Disclaimer: I’m not new to German, I had it in primary school and although I barely attended I still remember a surprising amount, you probably do too if you ever took any classes. German media was not uncommon for me, so I did passively see it and hear it.

Okay now that that’s over with, how is this method different?

It’s very different from any course or class you can take, and it’s almost completely free (not for me, I decided to get an autodidactic book).

It’s intense and has a lot of dry studying at first, so be prepared. First you learn the most common words, I chose a generic list of 1000 most common words and I’m writing it down by hand and speaking as I write the words down. The idea is, that you get a basic vocabulary to be able to speak and understand the language enough to carry a conversation or listen to music, watch videos etc. and make a connection to the culture surrounding the language. Once you have that basic vocab down, you immerse yourself through media and apps such as HelloTalk and iTalki, or simply get friends who are native speakers to help you.

My study session

I just finished writing down words, I did 375 words in one sitting, and I still have to learn some of them. I feel quite drained. Tried to show off some of my new knowledge to a native speaking friend of mine and got laughed at for my sentence structure. This is no big deal! You’re bound to make mistakes but you have to laugh at them and learn from them, ask the native speakers questions, most people will be honored you chose to learn their language!
