I left this open in another tab, meaning to watch it like a week ago. It's an official video published and promoted on the Youtube Studio dashboard, about common misconceptions around their recommendation algorithm and what the truths really are. .

And now, finally watching it, that white haired dude, Mr. "Youtube Liason", is the guy who told me the algorithm ignored one of my videos because "maybe it just wasn't very good."

Famously, and something I will never ever shut up about when given the chance to mention it, I put out a video about Jurassic Park games just before Christmas, expecting it to slot in and do decent numbers, just like all of my other videos do. Since Youtube earnings tend to spike around the holidays, this was going to be how I paid for Christmas presents that year. It was something I'd done at least twice before. Instead, the algorithm completely ignored the video because it was outside my usual wheelhouse of Sonic content.

This is shockingly relevant to the very first topic they cover: whether a single "off-topic" video actually matters with regards to how the algorithm sees your channel, and the general answer from the Youtube technician is "No." You don't gotta tell me.

When I put my full weight behind a video, it easily breaks 10k views, even 50k or 200k+ views. Some of my most popular videos have cracked the multi-millions!

So when this dude spells out in plain english that the algorithm effectively ignores one-off videos? Yeah, no shit. I'm living proof of that. Across the first two years, that Jurassic Park video struggled to break even 2000 views. Only by paying out of my own pocket for multiple promotional campaigns and constantly complaining about its lack of performance has it struggled to hit just over 5000 views, some four years later. The algorithm knew it was way outside my regular wheelhouse and treated it like poison.

And this liason clown had the balls to tell me "well maybe the video was just bad, sorry bud" only to, two years later, sit down with this technician that spells out exactly what I was knew was happening and was trying to explain to him.

Except now, of course, it's being spun as a positive: "don't worry, a one-off won't hurt your regular content" as opposed to the "we didn't notify anyone about your one-off and it became stillborn" I experienced.

I have sat down and thought very intently about this Jurassic Park video. Obviously, if I make a stink about its performance, tell people the algorithm made a poor judgment call, I'm going to get patted on the back and comforted that yes, the video is good. Don't worry. The mean old algorithm is just dumb. Right? And Youtube unflinchingly believes in the power of their algorithm as this perfect shining golden standard to drive viewership, the thing that can never, ever be wrong about guys like me.

I appreciate the comfort and support of friends and colleagues and even random strangers who are inherently distrustful of the algorithm. But I also know that feels like an echo chamber.

So then what, do I trust Youtube? Absolutely not. At the end of the day their algorithm still made an unfair judgment call and despite their claims above that any old video can get picked up by the algorithm at any time, my video has never recovered. I've tried more interesting thumbnails, I've spent almost $100 on Google Adsense promotion -- one of which, I should note, was the same week that Jurassic World 3 released, and the other being E3. Both should have been extremely lucrative times to run ads. And I got crickets.

I like the video. I stand by the fact I think I did a good job on it. I remain proud of it. It's as good as any real-effort-content I've put out in the last five years. The echo chamber tells me it's a good video, too, even if I literally can't buy views.

So my only recourse is to sit here and stew in my bitterness towards this algorithm. The shining, ultimate example as to why you should never let a computer make a qualitative judgment call. And I will be frustrated and angry about this until I draw my last breath.

$10k in medical bills, ambulance ride, nearly dying and another $100 later and finally I did it. I got ONE of my major life saving goals done.

🕺!I got two EpiPens!🕺

Still have to wear my apple watch to bed to monitor. But now I can actually save myself if shit goes down. Such a relief.

God I fucking hate this medical system. Ive gone into anaphylaxis 4 times. From diff things each time. This time was the closest to death.

And this was the only asshole to actual help and take me seriously. And she was a pcp not even the ER docs who couldn't do shit. She got me prescription higher intensity allergy daily meds for my other allergies, epipen for deadly ones and allergist referal. All in one visit. Amazing!/sarc

The ER docs and paramedics claimed my reaction was an overdose for hours til finally my drug test was negative. Even interrogating my traumatized and shocked fiance over and over asking what I took and if I was suicidal.. All the while turns out the only reason I lived was cause my fiance helped me take a benadryl/put me into the recovery position and called them. I got better as it set in. Then they gave me an IV, a pamphlet on info about being tired and mild allergies. And told me to go.

I woke up and I couldn't breathe. And not even in the regular allergy way. No. Like I was slowly drowning. Every breath was harder and harder and slower and slower. And each less satisfying than the last. I had such low oxygen for so long I couldn't move really at all without severe shaking and effort when I managed. Could only speak in a rasp then not at all. Kept blacking out. Tingling lips/limbs and an intense weight and heaviness in my body. I have never felt it that clear before. The feeling I was going to die. I was silently angry and horrified and frustrated. And wrote my final "I LOVE YOU" and "GOOD BYE" into the my fiance's arm with a shaking fingertip because I couldn't speak. I felt my conscious "shift" in a way at the end. Like I was about to pass out. But not fall asleep. Like I was teetering on the edge of something else. It was horrifying. And my Fiances traumatized. But no it was a drug od, oh wait no the one benadryl musta made you sleepy even tho you hd symptoms prior and never any history being tired from it or hm idk must be mild allergies 🤷‍♂️👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️ I fucking hate hospitals. Especially the ER.

A random kind nurse who swapped in at last second was only one who immediately diagnosed it correctly. Long term mold exposure poisoning worsened by preexisting mold allergy. And helped us realize that oh shit this happened cause our air purifier filter was clogged af. So basically off. And that's why I nearly actually fuckin died. All that right before giving me socks and having me go. He also gave me legal advice on how to take down my landlord for the mold problems weve had for two years now(too poor to move.)

"The Definitive Byler fic rec list"

Literally no one asked for this but because I spent the majority of last year (...and 2019, and 2018...) reading byler fics and coping with life, I thought I’d make a list of some of my absolute favorites.

The other day I was basically starving for some byler fics and the angel @magicalfairy provided me with some of her faves so I thought I’d do the same, because I love reading, and I love all of these fics and I appreciate their writers💗 And fic writers in general, come on!

- This is a mix of long works and one-shots/short stories. - Everything is mostly fluff with a tad of angst and a lot of internalized homophobia conflict. - Every fic is completed, except for the ones I mention that they are not. - I try my best to lay out the stories in a way that I won’t spoil you the plot but also warning you of some stuff you might don’t like. Either way, all of these fics are correctly tagged by their respective authors/owners, so read at your own risk. For better understanding, in between brackets I denote Rating, Words and quantity of Chapters. - I feel like I should clarify, none of these are narrated in the singular first person. None of that “And I told him...”, no.

Long fics

a dream always the same (T, 99k, 35 chapters) What happened in those few weeks between the Battle of Starcourt and the Byers leaving Hawkins. Literally a satisfying and very needed fill in of season three, with a good dose of Mike’s thoughts and conflict. Mike’s characterization is specially amazing in this one. The writing style is amazing and I know the author put everything into making it historically accurate, and it was really sweet. You probably read it, it’s by the amazing sevensided here on Tumblr🧡

Spring Break (T, 120k, 14/15 chapters) The slowburn of my dreams. Lots of internalized conflict and conflict with each other. Conflict within the Party (uhh kind of), conflict with Mike and Will. Byers family has moved and the kids are visiting! Chaos. Characterization is on point. Yeah, I know it’s unfinished, but the fourteenth chapter actually serves as a pretty nice ending.

This is where it starts (M, 148.8k, 24 chapters) Aged up characters. The Party is in college and Will disappears again, but now it’s different. Mike knows he didn’t vanish from thin air, and the discovery he and the Party end up making is pretty insane. Mystery solving/fantasy/third dimension, throw in a bit of D&D and Mike realizing some shit, and you get this marvelous fic. It’s a breath of fresh air. The world building is definitely one of the elements that stands out the most, because it’s very nicely described, it sounds like a dream and it’s completely immersive. Absolute gem of a fic.

there’s a Starman waiting in the sky (M, 30.6k, 8 chapters) Do I need to say anything? Will is out there living his best life and Mike realizes that wow, umm, maybe his best friend looks a bit too nice with that costume... and wait, is he getting horny? It’s actually really fun and sexy.

The Evening Speaks (T, 23k, 7 chapters) In where Mike is a late-night college radio host and Will is the art student that stays up till late to catch up with Wheeler on the Mic. They flirt through songs y’all, this one is really sweet.

heads or tails? (E, 24k, 3 chapters) Aged up characters. I know most people don’t enjoy sex in fics and with specific characters but this one is insanely well written. It’s a slowburn that commits to the tension and with every word you are grasping and anticipating their next move. I think you can find the author here on Tumblr as yousaidyes🧡

The Man of Average (M, 56.7k, 5/? chapters) Aged up characters. No but you don’t understand, the writing here is absolute gourmet. The story is exciting as well, it’s super interesting. Weirdly enough, for being very aged up characters, they are well characterized but they don’t feel like teenagers. They are naturally Mike and Will. The author really captured Mike and Will’s essence. I know, it’s unfinished and it’s updated very rarely, but this is the typical fic you can’t believe someone just posted on the internet for free. I will say though, I think it’s definitely not for everyone. Read at your own risk.

Heartstrings (E, 82.8k, 24/? chapters) Aged up characters. By the same author of The Man of Average. A collection of memories, the road to Mike and Will’s happy ever after. And fucking hell!!!!! You’ll cry and get angry, you’ll cheer for them, then you’ll want to crash their faces together because god dammit you love each other!!! But yeah, same thing here. The writing and the way the story is laid out as a nonlinear narrative is brilliant. And I also think this is one of the best Will versions I’ve read. The author might as well be the og creator of this two characters tbh. You can find the author here as mylesimeblr🧡

Sinners behind the walls (T, 1.5k, 1/1) And because I can’t stop recommending this author, a little thing of Mike tormenting himself but also being too deeply committed to Will.

The Red Envelope series (T/E, 167K, two completed works) Something happens that Will thought was impossible and from there, pure drama and romance. Anything by this author has the potential to become your absolute favorite fic, but this series in particular is amazing. I doubt that any of you haven’t read this, but it doesn’t hurt to put it in this list. I’m pretty sure the author is serendipitous-magic on Tumblr🧡

A New Fight series (T, 91k, two completed works, one WIP) And finally the Star Wars AU that we all needed. But this isn’t your typical “Mike is Han”, “Will is Leia” and “El is Luke”, it’s way more interesting than that, and the author has appropriated the Star Wars world like no other. I’ll admit I’m not a 100% fluent in SW lore but this is amazing to me either way. This author is also on Tumblr, tea-for-one-please🧡

- Yes, most of these are (if not all), in a way, canon compliant/canonverse/canon continuation into fanon. (In a way)

One-shots and short stories

Sundae for Two, Please (G, 4.8k) Steve being the supportive friend and older brother these kids collectively need. (not Jonathan erasure, we love him). Steve is very sweet himself, and this little cute thing through his POV is gorgeous. Yes, it’s byler.

Backstage (T, 10k, 2/2) Jonathan, you forgot to mention to Will how hot your new band’s guitarist is, dude. Now he’s hyperventilating and weirdly flirting with him in the corner. Background Stonathan because why not.

102 Peach Street (G, 3.8k) Established relationship, but not only that, they are married :’’))) PURE fluff. Extreme fluffiness. Diabetes.

sweatshirts and bottled up feelings (T, 3.2k) Or, Mike thinks that the sweatshirt Will wears looks insanely good on him. And kitchens are for lovers.

kiss it better (T, 16.3k) Basically one of the best character studies of a few precise moments of Mike and Will’s relationship and feelings.

will wonders ever cease (T, 11.3k) #i ship will and happiness. Omfg what a beautiful piece of fanfic. Will centric, this kid really deserves all the good in the world.

The Calm After the Storm (T, 1.6k) Tooth rotting fluff, boyfriends in love. Boyfriends being lazy, cuddling, love words, kisses. Boys loving each other’s company... Basically, Mike and Will in their element. What more can you ask for?

neither of us ready to let go (T, 4.8k) That scene from season three, but a bit of a fix it.

Still in love (G, 1k) Domestic, married life au fluff. Y’all, I’m a sucker for established Byler, even if I can’t find many fics with it. But this is very sweet. It takes place in 2020, but I don’t think there are any mentions of the COVID-19 crisis that I remember.

I Nver Find Out ‘Til I’m Head Over Heels (G, 12.5K) Classic 5+1 fic. If you haven’t read it, where have you been? This is your moment. In where Mike keeps inviting Will to the school dances and Will thinks it’s just a joke until he realizes it’s not.

Before You’re Gone (T, 5.9k) Will is leaving Hawkins and Mike thinks this is a great moment for a confession. This one I discovered last friday, thank you friend @magicalfairy 💗

You’re weird Wheeler (M, 4.5k) Mike unintentionally starts a tradition of going to each other to talk about their sexual encounters just after they finish. Will keeps getting more explicit with the details he shares, and he makes his best friend interested. This one is really fun y’all.

Out-Of-Town Friends (N/R, 4.6K) It’s not rated. I haven’t re- read it but I’d say it would probably fall in a T rating. So cute!! Will has new friends and sneaks off every friday and the Party doesn’t know where he is going, so Mike decides to follow him and is surprised.

Snowed Under (G, 1.3k) By the same author of The New Fight series. Mike is spending christmas by himself in college because a snowstorm hits Chicago and Nancy can’t drive to see him, but then he has a surprise visitor. Ahhh just a lil sweet holiday fic. Super cute.

you love me anyway series (T, 7.1k, three completed works) Literally just the cutest thing ever. Established Byler. Will loves to take pictures and he loves taking pictures of Mike. It’s adorable.

you wanna be friends forever (i can think of something better) (T, 9k) This one is so amazing. So. Amazing. From Will’s POV, my kid deserves the world and he gets it.

okay not to be okay (T, 4.9k) Mike is a bit sad but then everything is okay.

can’t hold out forever (G, 18.4k) Y’all!!!!! 5+1 sweetness. Mike has been falling in love since kindergarten. And it’s long af, you’ll enjoy it.

even if it takes forever (G, 1.3k) College short AU, they miss each other, they love each other, they promise all to each other. It is sappy y’all.

clear as day (N/R, 18.4K, 4 chapters) It’s not rated, but I’d say it falls in the T category. Strangers to friends to lovers. And also, everyone is pretty gay; we have our dynamic trio Mike, Max and El as disaster lesbians (and gay). Will works at the library and he is also gay. Lucas and Dustin and Will are the best friends we needed. It’s very sweet and the Party is kind of formed here!

I went overboard with the one-shots, so you must have realized how much I love long one-shots and I favor them over long works lmao but they are all amazing!!! If it’s on this list, I probably read it at 2 am, sobbing in my bed. So. Hope you enjoy it☺️🧡

Nothing irritates me more then to see JKK run like TKK and do stuff like this without context. If you're joking, if its from a fic, if its speculation, just say it, instead of waiting til you get 100s of likes, 100's of comments & people freaking before deleting & not speaking about it. This shit spread all over my TL.

I don't get it. Is it a way to get likes? Or a way to insinuate there is something out there that they are privy to?

Whichever it is, it's not cool.

If it's something you are privy to but you cannot share due to privacy issues, then don't post the message on social media, as cryptic as it is, to begin with.

And if it's to get likes and just all made up, same same - shouldn't have been posted to start with.

2020 Year End Fic Review

because we needed a cute gif to welcome in a new year this was the cutest one i could think of ie young wwx with a bUNNY Total number of completed stories: 8 completed stories + 1 chapter on a long-running series

Total word count: 20,983 (????? how???) Fandoms written in: natsume yuujinchou, mob psycho 100, the world ends with you, fire emblem three houses, once upon a time in lingjian mountain

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d predicted? way, way, way more, im shocked and delighted What’s your own favorite story of the year? advance, retreat in three fourths beat , aka one of my two fire emblem fics actually came together nicely?? and included all the stuff i had initially planned to include, which is always a pleasant feeling to have (i keep thinking i don’t know how to write mean characters, and yet my two fire emblem fics insist on shoving hubert ‘mr poison expert assassin man’ into the spotlight. curious.) Did you take any writing risks this year? expanded into some different fandoms outside of my usual rarepairs!! tried running a fandom event week! Hardest story to write: BOTH FIRE EMBLEM FICs, because i have not been as steeped in canon lore as some other mutuals??? also how do fire emblem politics even work what does an imperial minister even dO outside of assassinating and listening to hot gossip, these are forever a mystery

Biggest Disappointment: nothing so far!! Biggest Surprise: someone asked to translate one of my horrible exorcists fics and THEY DID and my brain was going this iS IT U have Peaked as a Fic Writer

(also one of my fire emblem fics was included in a ferdibert collection?????????????? i internally cried big ghibli tears when it was invited to be included) and then i also went this is it i have truly Peaked in my time in Fandom u will never write anything this big again tho this is likely untrue writing is just difficult all the time foreverrrr

oh GOSH let’s just count the greater MCU as one fandom eh, and in no particular order (also not counting any of my wife’s fics because I’m genuinely a fan of hers besides being like, gay and married to her but just listing off five of her fics would be cheating SO) (if you guys REALLY WANT I can do a separate top 5 of her fics but that seems excessive lmao)

I’ll Be the Rock Star if You’ll Be the Scientist by nerdwegian - T, Daisy/Jemma, 10k. This is like, classic Skimmons fic hiding in a shenanigans plot where a genetically modified dinosaur escapes the Bus in Lola, and everybody has to go retrieve It. It honestly reads like an episode to me and makes me laugh every time. (It also features background Clint/Coulson, which should tell you how much I love this fic because that doesn’t even bother me.)

Carry Me ‘Til You Marry Me by circ_bamboo - E, Melinda/Bobbi, 13k. This is fake marrieds fic where the gang accidentally runs into an alien ship and ends up spending some time in their civilization, and Bobbi and Melinda are mistaken for girlfriends and the aliens insist on marrying them. I love the worldbuilding in this fic, and the voices are pitch perfect.

Parfit Gentil by toffeecape - E, Pepper/Natasha, 2k. This is...I mean, some of it is porn but some of it is non-sexual service kink which is. a thing. for. me. ANYWAY. It’s just a gorgeous little snapshot of Natasha-as-Pepper’s-assistant and also ace-spectrum Nat, which I love dearly.

To Keep My Wolves From Your Door by pirateygoodness - E, Bobbi/Jemma, 41k. J is my friend but honestly I would adore this even if she wasn’t, because really good werewolf stories are my JAM. I really love the worldbuilding in this one too, and I’m also from the general area the story is set in and that gives me warm fuzzies.

the actual half of myself by cosmicocean - T, Matt/Foggy, 10k. C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER!!! This is a soulmate AU, which is normally a trope that I avoid like the plague, but this one a) does something interesting with the soulmarks and isn’t the same old “first words you say to them” standby, and b) actually acknowledges that someone’s soulmate might change with time. Matt/Foggy is like the only white boyslash that I will be into pretty much 100% of the time without question, and I really love the stuff this fic does with them. (Also in this story Foggy has adorable moms and I love them.)

Time for a rant from Zelda.

Hello, all.

First, let's talk about Crystal and her blatant purchasing of followers.

Allow me to provide you some facts.

Above we see stats on both Michael and Crystal and their gain/loss of Instagram followers since December 28, 2018. Michael didn't seem to be in the OwlStat database before 12/28, so I can only go that far back on him, so we'll be using from that date til today for both to compare.

The first screenshots I’ve given you show their stats individually, with new follows highlighted.

I have also given you a side by side comparison.The center box is showing that, overall, her account, despite less followers, has more people like or comment on her posts than his. She has almost double the amount of people interacting with her posts than he does.

As you can see, Crystal has gained a SIGNIFICANT number of followers, 30,915 to be exact, while Michael, who actually has a real fanbase and a music career, has LOST 5,219 since then. (Note: All of my numbers have come from adding up all their gains then subtracting losses or visa versa.)

Now, I will be fair here and assume that some of her new followers are legitimate follows, god only knows why. But those are some awfully high follower gain numbers to be generated by legitimate follows alone, don't you think?

Now I know that a lot of people are not interested in him as much anymore cause she's a bitch and people don't want to follow him only to see her and that he's not super active on socials too often, so that contributes to his losses, but I still see ABSOLUTELY NO REASON IN THE WORLD that she should be gaining followers by the thousands while Michael is losing them.

Cleary, Crystal is buying followers. The sheer amount of followers gained in one day, which peaked at almost 9.6k on January 2, doesn't seem reasonable for someone who's nothing more than a woman who has decided to make a career out of being a fake.

Unfortunately, I can only go back 100 days, but I'd love to have a comparison of her following before she was linked to Michael and see if buying followers by the thousands is new for her or if it's a habit.

So next my nosey ass decided to check how the other 3 boys, the band Instagram, and Sierra were doing, just for the hell of it.

All three boys and the band lost followers. Luke lost 98. Calum lost 1,564. Ashton lost 417. The band lost 800.

Sierra gained 18,873.

Let's do some quick math:

The boys, 5 Seconds of Summer, the band that we are fans of, LOST 8,098 collectively over the past 10 days.

The girls, who have little to no claim to fame, who give us ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, have GAINED 49,788 collectively in that same span of time.

Again, this is all assuming some are legitimate follows, but you can't tell me that 19k and 31k people have legitimately followed Sierra and Crystal, respectively, in the past 10 days.

I decided to also look at a couple artists who we might reasonably expect lots of people to follow that also might have a similar fanbase and have recently charted, toured, or will be touring.

Taylor Swift gained 11,224.

She did just come back from a break not too, too long ago, but she also just did a 53 venue stadium tour, so you’d think she’d gain followers.

Harry Styles lost 16,646.

Harry Styles hasn’t toured in about 6 months or released anything, but he would have a similar and most likely largely overlapping fanbase with 5sos.

I also looked at a few others, Shawn Mendes, Zayn, Beyonce, Dua Lipa, and Halsey, who all had gains in the 10k+ range daily.

These are all people who have their name out there and a reason for people to follow them though.

But based on those numbers, you’re telling me that more people followed Crystal, who does nothing, and Sierra, who had short lived success from XF with Alex & Sierra and now can’t be bothered to work on her music, more in the past 10 days than Taylor Swift, who’s HUGE? And to add to that, people are unfollowing Harry Styles.

Crystal and Sierra buy followers, plain and simple.

I can’t begin to guess why it matters, cause more often than not buying followers is just bots, inactive accounts, or accounts that won’t interact with your account, so it’s really just for show. All I know is I certainly know I’ve never looked at someone’s follower count and thought “That is someone I need to follow.”
