Marian’s Ultimate TTRPG Recommendation Post
So I’m sick to fuck of everyone twisting every god damn thing to shove it into dungeons and dragons. This post is as detailed as I can get for alternatives you can seek out, as I’m a big fan of a diverse range of tabletop games.
First, for new players who are easily intimidated by large rulesets, or veterans who just prefer a lightweight system, I highly recommend most apocalypse hacks, white wolf games (despite my opinions on their writing), or just using the fate system. If you’re a fan of KSBD, you could try out the Broken Worlds system (just pledge 1$ to the patreon.) You can also try Exalted if you really enjoy Wuxia, or just take the fate system and build your own world. If you like percy jackson, consider looking at the Scion books. If you like vampires, werewolves and witches, white wolf has you covered on all three.
If you want MORE detail, especially with regards to customization, I would recommend Palladium Fantasy or Rifts. Exhaustive in their lore, both the lore AND the ruleset highly encourage individual customization and building the character YOU want to play. I would also encourage Abaddon’s other works, like Lancer and ICON, lancer for the mech nerds and icon for the epic fantasy nerds.
If there’s any type of IP you really enjoy in the fantasy or sci-fi worlds, there is usually a tabletop RPG! Cyberpunk itself has one, as well as Lord of the Rings (The One Ring ttrpg is what you want to look for), pretty much all Warhammer properties, Star Wars, AND Star Trek all have their own ttrpgs. You just have to look for them.
If superheroes and such are more your thing, both Marvel and DC have made TTRPG systems before, although they’re somewhat outdated now. I’d recommend Champions or Heroes Unlimited for rules-heavy, and Mutants and Masterminds for rules-light.

There’s a mechanic in AD&D that I like a lot. Percentile strength. The rule was first introduced in the Greyhawk supplement as a way to buff Fighters. After you roll your character’s strength, if you got an 18, you roll percentile dice and your strength is further enhanced based on your roll. The rule was later included in the AD&D Player’s Handbook.
I worked out today why I like this rule so much.
It is a way to buff fighters, but what it adds is what I would describe as a “crit mechanic” into character creation. It’s possible to roll a high number in much the same way you would roll a 20 on a d20.
Not many games do this.
The only ones I have found recently are the Marvel Super Heroes or FASERIP system. In which attributes and powers are rolled randomly.
There’s also Deluxe Tunnels and Trolls, where you roll 3d6 for each attribute and you roll again if you get a triple and keep rolling until you stop getting triples.
Heroes unlimited might count here, but in those rules you can just pick from the list instead of rolling. Same goes for something like Troika.
Random character creation is fun and it should be in more games.

Good morning babes, time for angst
So y'all know that one episode of Justice League Unlimited, "Kid Stuff", right? Where Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green Latern (John Stewart) got turned into kids by Morgan Le Fey to defeat her son, Mordred. At the end of the episode, Batman says, "I haven't been a kid since I was eight years old."
Think about that. Now. Think of Billy Batson, AKA, Captain Marvel (Shazam), the secret child superhero who's been losing his childhood thanks to being the Champion of Magic. The age where he starts being Captain Marvel varies, but imagine if he got his powers at only eight years old.
Imagine Billy becoming a member of the Justice League only a few months later, and being a superhero for years. His coworkers were none the wiser, not even Batman.
Billy having so much responsibility and the weight of the magical world on his shoulders from a very young age, and he's never once had someone help him or asked for help (besides the Wizard and Tawny). He's encountered so many dangerous threats and attacks on his life, both as Captain Marvel and ad Billy, but continues to fight everyday for the sake of everyone else. He loves his city, his friends, and the people that will never know him. He's truly pure of heart.
Now. Imagine an accident happening years later when Billy is like 15 years old, where his age gets revealed to the league and everything is in chaos. Members are confused, upset, angry, shocked, but most of all, they just don't know what to think. An important member of the league has been revealed to be a kid this entire time in secret, hiding it from them for so long.
A meeting is immediately held and Captain Marvel is forced to attend not as Captain Marvel, but as Billy Batson. The chair and tables feel so much higher than before to him, but he sits down at his regular seat and looks at everyone in the eyes. They argue, question him about everything, but Billy is surprisingly calm and mature about everything. He shouldn't be this mature. He'd still a kid, someone says.
"I haven't been a kid since I was eight years old." A sentence that gives Batman chills. Billy hasn't been a kid in so long, and neither has he.
He never knew it before, but they were so alike this whole time. Opposite on the spectrum, but still the same. Two sides of one coin are still made of the same material.
Maybe that was why Batman speaks up for Billy after that, and stands up for him to continue being a league member.

Okay but I highkey loved Dr Fate's mental retreat sanctuary for superheros in JLU, because it felt so damn real that sometimes you just want to hide and get away, especially after experiencing something as hardcore as sentencing your race in order to save the planet you care for. Shayera Hol - former Hawkgirl - is grieving, healing and questioning her own fate. She has no idea what to do with her life anymore since her mask broke and she's no longer a solider and a spy. Shayera is finally free to be herself, yet she lost her friends, her lover and her purpose. How often do you see something so raw and real in an animated TV show?
Arthur and Shayera, two fierce, combative bersekers playing chess and an android who was ready to destroy a whole world just sitting there and watching? There's something hilarious about this scene

I am biased towards the intrepid heroes but these are the side quests that interest me the most. Please reblog for larger sample size so I can make a decision.

The Justice League and Avengers are weird.
They're a random assortment of superheroes that SHOULDN'T work, but just DO. Like, nothing makes sense about this team, there's no synergy or rhyme or reason.
Why is the literal god of thunder on a team of mortals?
Why is the guy who punches clowns on a team of the most powerful men and women in the universe?
I don't know, but...it just WORKS. It shouldn't, when you think about it, but it DOES.

Kiya, random ask, so who (see below for the names) do you think are a dog person or cat person? Why?
(Between your fav of course : Yuuji, Izuku, Reki, Tanjiro, Haru)
Now, I know Noe already have a cat, that is why I don't ask him.....
Ah, I gotta really think about this one.
Okay, Yuji actually in one of the Juju shorts couldn't choose between dogs or cats. Now, to me, he's so (orange) cat coded. But would like dogs, too. I mean, in canon he is seen admiring the Demon Dogs. So he's both to me.
Izuku, similar case. I don't think he would mind either animal. He gives "definitely would adopt a dog", but turns around and adopts like two cats. Or just any animal as spontaneous as he can be. Look at him and tell me he wouldn't adopt any animal. I just know he would!
Both Tanjiro and Haru gives me dog person. Haru probably would adopt a Corgi. Tanjiro? Give him a really big dog. I can see him with one.
Reki, I won't lie, I would say is a cat person. I don't think he hates dogs, but if asked which animal he would rather have he would probably say "cat". I don't know what animal Sketchy is, I think it's like a fox (which is a dog, yeah) maybe. But Sketchy kinda acts like how a cat would and Reki is probably use to that behavior so he thinks that he could handle one.
