Beyond the Storm: A Year of Pain, Growth, and Revelations
Welcome to a special edition of ‘Thinking Thursday’ – and what a start it is! Today, I’m introducing ‘Diva Rant,’ a segment where I’ll share unfiltered, candid reflections. As we stand at the crossroads between 2023 and 2024, this first rant is not just about sharing thoughts; it’s about embracing change, confronting challenges, and stepping boldly into the new year. Let’s navigate these…

For something a little different than my usual virtual photography, here's my project for the Horizon Creation Celebration hosted by @horizon-events!
I'm really happy with how it turned out - and I'm excited to see everyone else's creations! More info below the cut ↓
I had this leather bag that I found at a thrift store, but it had somebody else's monogram on the front that I never liked. I always planned to do something about it - and I thought adding the medallion from Rost's armor would be the perfect project. The stitching of the medallion required the most work by far, but I also added a little Nora-inspired feather-and-bluegleam charm to the strap.
I didn't buy any supplies for this - everything was sourced from things I'd already collected (...hoarded?) in hopes of using them in a project someday.* The medallion uses reclaimed leather from an old purse, some blue cord I'd saved from... somewhere, and red cord of similar provenance. A stiff piece of plastic from packaging serves as interior support, and a strong magnet is currently holding it to the bag. I may attach it permanently, but I didn't want to yet in case I decided to use the medallion somewhere else!
All the feathers were found on the ground - there's an obvious jay feather (Steller's jay's in my neck of the woods), a white feather (most likely from a gull) that I colored with alcohol ink, and what I believe is a pelican feather - you can barely see it behind the purple one. The cords holding the feathers were all from my stash as well.
The "bluegleam" is a quartz point colored with glass paint. I'd had an idea for sculpting and casting the bluegleam cluster Aloy wears on her Frozen Wilds armors, but I wasn't able to get a finished product I was happy with. I'm not giving up on it, though - hopefully I can manage it someday!
*Which, honestly, is a miracle. I finally used stuff in a project! See, keeping interesting things is more than just adding to clutter!

Collaborative December klaine challenge 2023 between @esilher and @mynonah
A Wonderful Life by @mynonah
"Can I help you?" Blaine asks, wrapping his arms around Kurt's waist from behind.
"Is that the help?" Kurt chuckles.
"Why, isn't it better?"
"Much better. Thank you."
"So what are we doing?"
"Oh, isn't it obvious? We’re measuring the frame, silly. I need to know its dimensions."
"I see... And why?"
"To know if everything will fit, Blaine. We have such a wonderful life and so many plans. What if there isn't enough room for everything? What if one of our adventures is bigger than the frame?"
"That's never been a problem before. I think you should just let them deal with it, Kurt. They seem to know what they're doing."
"Well, I don't know.... It doesn't look big enough to me, look at this... we can't even fit in it now."
"Because we're too close. Yesterday we fit perfectly from top to bottom."
"You! I haven't had legs in days, Blaine! If I know the dimensions, I can figure out where to stand next. I have so many fabulous clothes, it's a shame to let them go to waste. Yesterday I wore my favorite boots. What if the frame gets smaller?"
"Okay, okay. Stop panicking, please. It's definitely not getting smaller. There were three of us yesterday, remember?"
"That's right, three. But what if Cooper comes over one day, huh? Or Dad and Carole? Or if we want a dog? Or a bigger parasol on the beach? And there's our daughter, Blaine... And I didn't even mention the triplets!"
"Whoa, slow down!! It's all separate universes, Kurt, you're messing everything up. You need to calm down. Five kids and a dog? Jesus Christ. Give me that thing, I'll help you measure it diagonally, but then you have to let this go. Please. Trust me, they know what they're doing. Let's just watch a movie instead."
"Thank you. I'm gonna... Um, Blaine?"
"Huh?"
"No offense, but… what the hell are you wearing?"
"My Dalton uniform, apparently. Oh, and… a boa?"
"I can see that, honey... but why?"
"I have no idea, you know it's not up to me. But I think I like it."
"Oh." Kurt's eyes widen as the sentence makes sense in his head. He looks at himself in alarm.
"Thank God,” Kurt sighs in relief. “I'm just being elegant. Now all I need is some weird stuff from the first season… Have you seen any of those? Ugh, I think one year Rachel and I burned all the photos. There was this horrible outfit that..."
"DON'T give them any ideas!!! Oh God... that was close. Come on, let's watch that movie, popcorn's ready."
…
"Kurt? Do you think I could suggest a title? I'll just write it under the frame."

Do you like the life series? Do you like to draw, write, or partake in another creative craft? Are you looking for a way to challenge yourself this Inktober? If you answered yes to any of these questions, I may have just the thing for you!
Below is a list of words I have compiled (with the help of some friends) that make vague reference to the life series with plenty of room for individual interpretation. That being said, feel free to think outside the box when it comes to responding to the prompts!! Draw something from Hermitcraft, Empires, Qsmp, or outside the realm of Minecraft entirely!
Use this how you want! Do one, do a handful, do them all! Do them out of order, or do them day by day! Start now, or save this for next year, whatever works for you as an artist! Whatever you create, feel free to share under #lifetober 2023, so we can all see it!
I'll be taking on this challenge myself with an attempt to do all 31 prompts by the end of October, though I may not adhere to the dates assigned to each prompt.
Challenge yourself! Share this with your friends! And get creating! :)

some left-handed gouache studies from the past week, after taking a couple months off thanks to the arm surgery and a deep fear that being bad at it would take all the fun out of it for me. painted on 12x16 paper, so I can get less mad about my wobbly left hand and focus more on larger marks and color and composition. good news! I'm not quite as bad at it as I had worried I would be, and it is mostly still very fun. bad news: not being able to draw a straight line continues to be a legit problem.
I don't know if this arm recovery stuff is interesting to anybody besides myself, but not talking about it would make me crazy, so allow me to update you on all of the weird side effects of being able to partially but largely mostly not use my dominant hand:
- as expected, I continue to attempt to use my dominant hand for things despite the fact that it: cannot hold any weight, it cannot get my fingers out of the way when I go to grab something, portions of the back of my hand and fingers are completely numb and don't notice when they bump against things, and despite the fact that I get weird nerve pain if I attempt to manipulate anything smaller than a tennis ball for any length of time
- I am most likely to thoughtlessly switch to my dominant hand in the middle of drawing or painting, in the middle of brushing my teeth, and while eating. apparently these are the three things I do where I get into a flow state.
- I am starting to confuse right and left, not so much as absolute directions, but as used to determine which way to tighten or loosen the lid on a jar or similar rotational acts that it turns out I absolutely do not have a logical structure for solving for anymore.
- I am starting to think of using my dominant hand for any purpose as "cheating", which is definitely counterproductive, but that's the ol' internalized ableism for you.
- I am more convinced than ever that our entire society has been designed to be subtly infuriating to deal with using your left hand, and there is no way anyone who is left hand dominant needs to hear my opinions on the matter, but wow. gosh. geeze.
- I oscillate wildly between being deeply deeply grateful for adaptive tools and being deeply deeply angry about their limits. again, there is nobody out there who has been using any of these adaptive tools for more than 2 months who needs to hear my thoughts on the matter, so this message is just for able-bodied people: you cannot call a tool a successful replacement for abled usage methods if it does not allow self-determination in how you use it. Microsoft, I'm looking at you and the many useful swearwords you censor when i try using your speech to text tools.
I do still really love painting, and drawing, and writing, even though they are all now very much new challenges all over again. I suspect mostly I'm just speed running the same experience many people will go through as they age of having to modify and realign their approach to their usual modes of expression and interaction and creation, which is something people have been doing for as long as society has existed, which just means I'm going to be better at it, obviously, thanks to getting this Head start
and maybe a year from now I will have the ability to hold things in my dominant right hand for more than 30 seconds, and definitely a year from now I will have a lot more precise control over my left hand, so I guess there's lots to look forward to 👍
in the meantime I will continue to paint my favorite things!

oh my gosh you don't want to know how long this took to finish.
like, no joke, I almost didn't make it in time to get it posted today because I was still inking the cornucopia. it was that bad. I'm really happy with how the fruits and stuff came out though c:
whenever I'm working on something really monotonous and time-intensive as this I like to listen to a bunch of podcasts or youtube videos (yes multiple were required to get this done)!
unfortunately I'm sort of running out of creators/series to listen to, I thought I'd ask about it on here. what/who would you personally recommend? :D
