oh nonnie! what a wonderful thing to think about <3

(i think there are so so many scenarios for steve and bucky to have their first kiss, and every one is more wonderful than the last. i've read so many great takes on this, and i truly believe there is no right or wrong answer. those boys have such a long timeline and different headcanons or preferences can make their first kiss/getting together moment happen whenever on it. that flexibility is one of my favorite things about this ship!)

i think my personal favorite take on it is this: bucky was in love with steve pretty much the whole time, and steve spent far too long in the dark about the fact that he very much loved bucky back. his realization occurs sometime in the 21st century, probably after sam or nat point it out to him -- subtly or not. this could be during/shortly after catws, but i honestly like to think it was even later.

in my head, steve realizes it during the time bucky is in wakanda and he can't help the way he constantly checks bucky's vitals, and wants to call him every morning and every night. even when he's somewhere deep in hiding, running missions with the others in europe, he can't help the way he yearns to be back in wakanda watching bucky's smile rival the sun in brightness. sam and nat exchange looks, and wanda rolls her eyes. when steve tells them he might be in love with bucky, they can't even feign surprise.

and i don't think steve fears the feeling, or even necessary pines way too hard. somewhere deep down, he knows he and bucky are everything to each other, and he hopes that the way bucky's gazes linger sometime mean he isn't alone in his feelings. but he knows a confession shift would change their dynamic, and that is a bit scary, and more importantly, he knows bucky is still recovering. he prioritizes that over all, over his silly feelings, and he doesn't want to derail bucky's first independence in decades with his own selfishness. so, for a while, he says nothing. he just identifies that the heat he feels blossom behind his sternum at the thought of bucky is very much not platonic, and he wants to kiss the damn lights out of him.

until one day, he does. here's where i have no one (1) answer. it might be a dramatic, arm-swooping, passionate moment as soon as steve steps off of the quinjet after a harrowing mission. it might be a moment of sunset tenderness shared at the lake in wakanda. it might be a playful quip turned into a flirty challenge. hell, it might be a sexy there-was-only-one-bed and someone had a boner moment. but i like to think it was in wakanda. bonus if steve asks to kiss bucky first, because he won't rob him of this choice, too.

i like to think it happened when they finally found each other again. bucky is finally himself, and steve has lost him one too many times. he has a queer-friendly environment and excellent friends that knock some sense into him. bucky wasn't necessarily ever expecting steve to return the love -- he underestimated just how thick steve can be -- but he is obviously more than on board with the turn of events. wakanda is their honeymoon haven.

Headcanon that the gov altered the footage that showed the inside of Steve's compass.

In the original footage the picture was of Steve, Sarah, and Bucky before she got sick. It was the last birthday he had with his mom and it was one of the only pictures he had with his two most important people just with him.

The compass is the first thing Steve gets back from Shield and he's never apart from it. Not until the love of his life comes back and then decides to go back into cryo. Its then that Bucky holds onto it for him, for luck and safety.

Bucky argued that Steve would need it more but Steve won the argument simply by saying, "I'm not going anywhere, not without you."

And he doesn't.

thinking about how lack of personal grooming in his hair & clothes is Bucky's misery language and immaculate personal grooming is Steve's 🥺

originally in tags but it got interesting so:

Personal grooming as just another variety of self-discipline.

and Steve's got that Catholic boy guilt where discipline = punishment

so being immaculately neat while he's suffering = self punishment / self-flagellation / kicking himself when he's already down etc.

whereas Bucky's got that good Jewish boy thing of personal grooming = cleansing and getting yourself ready for a good thing

(just like cleaning the house)

so when he’s down and out and expecting everything to be shit in his future = fuck personal grooming

and probably both see dressing neat as a form of manners because of going to church/temple

so Steve clings to manners when he's down whereas Bucky cannot be fucked

also the class aspect:

po boy Steve seeing scruffiness as a sign of financial security

since not having to look Respectable to eat is a privilege

whereas breadwinner Bucky is like 'got the money from my new job and I'm gunna Dress!!' as a sign of security

maybe also tried to look richer as part of the hustle while he was out there making bread to keep his boy healthy

if you ever see Steve looking immaculately neat AND doodling his surroundings? = VERY SAD BOY ALERT.

Sometimes, in Wakanda, Bucky feels the urge to cut his hair. The long locks (though now tied up in a bun or a ponytail) remind him of the Winter Soldier, and he can't help but feel a twinge of pain or sadness.

Steve gazes at him, his concern evident, but his smile never fades. That damn guy is like a blazing sun, radiating warmth to every fiber of Bucky's being.

Then, Bucky speaks.

"Do you think I should trim my hair?"

"No."

"Why not, punk?"

"Because I haven't come across any muse with short hair."

Bucky always furrows his brow when Steve compares him to mythical goddesses, but deep down, it brings a smile to his face once more.
