I will say, it is so fun thinking about the Waynes and their relationship with food. But specifically Bruce.
We get such little light shed on the Waynes before the Big Terrible happened. Like. How were Wayne dinners like?
Were they terribly posh and quiet with small moments of fun thrown in? Was Alfred scolding Thomas for telling a star eyed Bruce unnecessarily gory details from a surgery?
Did Martha help Bruce break into the cookie jar? Was there a lovely, playful gossip about Bruce's loud classmates and his adorable crush on Gray Ghost?
Because I like that! But I'd also like it to be a complete juxtaposition.
I want Bruce to talk about his family, to his children, with a smile that could melt the sun. I want him to tell them about the noise.
How the Wayne manor was permanently flooded with a noise and boister that could rival a packed 5 star kitchen.
How Thomas always cooked with a dry cigarette in his mouth, arguing with uncle Jacob about forks of all things.
Why were they smudged, why were they placed randomly and not organised with militaristic precision, while Martha watched with the fondest annoyance.
How Thomas would cuss filthy in Italian only when Bruce was around and only Oz could understand him, long before he was the Penguin, long before Bruce was Batman.
"It's about culture. Not that you'd understand, Jakey."
And uncle Jacob never entertained his father for long. He'd throw a dirty look, his obsidian eyes sharp as a switchblade, and mutter a 'bitch' in Russian, while Alfred sat there judging them both.
The Waynes were chaos with heartbeats. And Bruce's favorite event at these diners? The food fights. It's always uncle Philip who started them.
"Wow, Jay eating steak. Never thought I'd see this day."
" It's venison."
" Vinison?" Thomas would finally take a break from his unlit cigarette, holding Bruce in his lap like a king would a prized cat.
A collective sigh rang among the table. They knew what was coming. " What are you, fuckin' crazy? That's fuckin' cannoli, dipshit."
"With vinison."
"Jacob."
" Tom."
"Martha."
" Honey."
" You come into my house, not knowing what a goddam cannoli is? Fuck are you gonna tell me next, you don't put garlic in your Carbonara? I mean."
" Garlic is disgusting."
And Thomas would cover Bruce's ears like that's the most offensive thing uncle Jacob could utter at Thomas Wayne's table. And Uncle Oz agreed. Their favorite pastime was ganging up on Martha's oldest brother.
And it starts off as something minuscule and petty and mutates in something loud and ugly and breathtaking.
Bruce would watch with an open mouth in Alfred's lap, as his father's neck popped with veins, and uncle Jacobs pale complexion would blush something angry as the skin of his throat thinned from yelling.
"FUCK YOU, FUCK YOU, YOUR PRESIDENT IS A VODKA DRINKING, BALDING, COMMIE PIECE OF SHIT."
"YOU'RE AMERICAN. "
" I CANT HELP THAT, I WAS BORN LIKE THAT!"
And it wasn't a true Saturday dinner unless Thomas didn't leap across the table, running over all the food to smash whatever dish into Jacobs face.
But truly, the best part, was watching them go from fight dogs to eating outside in time-out. As different as his father and uncle were, they could always find agreement on one topic:
Defying Martha Wayne was painfully stupid.
They'd share a cigarette and eat in silence, which was as friendly as they'd ever get. But he loved it. Bruce loved Saturday dinner.
And when the batkids start the fighting tradition on Saturdays, Bruce thinks they do, too.

Bat Family 'Bruce is Tim's Biological Parent' AU Idea #3
The couple that Talia secretly adopted the baby she faked a miscarriage with at the end of Batman: Son of the Demon were Jack and Janet Drake.
None of those involved know that Tim is Bruce and Talia’s biological child.
A couple years after giving up Tim (whose adopted name she never knew), Talia encounters Bruce again and the sparks fly, same as always. She ends up pregnant again (maybe he needs to make/carry bat-condoms?) but this time, Bruce doesn’t stick around so he doesn’t know. Maybe it's because he doesn’t know; maybe Ra’s is insistent that Talia stay safe so not to lose this baby; maybe Ra’s knows she hid the previous baby from him and keeps her under watch this time; maybe Talia just doesn’t have it in her to give up another child; in any case, she keeps Damian and does her best to raise and protect him.
Tim has Talia’s hair, cheekbones, lips, eye shape, and more lithe build. He has Bruce’s skin tone. He has Martha Wayne’s ears and eye color. He has Ra's jawline and Thomas Wayne's eyebrows.
Damian has Bruce’s hair, cheekbones, jawline, brow line, and more muscular build. He has Talia’s skin tone, eye color, and eye shape. He has Thomas Wayne’s lips and eyebrows. He has Ra’s ears.
They don’t look like brothers unless you know enough about both sides of the family to see the connections. No one really does, so the connection isn’t made.
Until one day, when Damian is going through a box of photos in Tim’s room and sees a photo of a dark haired baby with a necklace he’s seen in photos before. It was his mother’s, and before that, his grandmother's. His mother said it was a family heirloom that went missing a few years before Damian was born.
Damian takes the photo to Tim to demand to know about it.
A very confused Tim answers that it’s a photo of him as an infant.
Damian demands to know about the necklace.
“Oh, that? It's pretty cool, huh? It was a parting gift from my birth mother. I still have it in a safety deposit box my mom set up for me.”
“Your birth mother?”
“Yeah, I was adopted…before Bruce adopted me. When I was born.”
“Who were your parents?!”
“You mean my birth parents? I don’t know. It was a private adoption and my parents never encouraged me to ask about it."
"And you never checked after they died?!"
"No...? Why would I? And why do you care?”
Damian refuses to answer but demands a copy of the photo. He secretly sends it to Talia.
She realizes that, somehow, against all odds, her boys have found each other. They’re with their father. They’re safe (relatively speaking) and being cared for. In a perfect world, she would have been able to keep both and raise them alongside her beloved, but in the world she lives in, this is better than she ever dared hope for.
Heaven help Ra’s the next time he makes a move against any of her children (she has totally mentally adopted Jason and Dick & Cass are technically her step-children, so…the whole family is basically under her protection now, even if they don’t realize it yet).

Batfam Crime Family Breakdown
I made a Crime Family au for a OC fic I'm writing, but the dynamics were too interesting to pass up diving into.
So, I present to you the Mask Family! #1 Crime monopoly in Gotham. Descriptions for Alfred, Dick, Jason, Tim and Damian are under the cut!
Bruce - AKA Black Mask. Head of the Crime family, and basically king of Gotham. After his parents were killed when he was a young boy and was handed a multi-million dollar company at the age of 9, he had focused on a sense of control. He sees Gotham/Gothamites like they can’t help it, and simply don’t know any better. He will know better for them. Other people might have similar backgrounds or share his feelings on the idea of protecting the city from itself, bu no one has the resources he does, nor the determination to do something.
He created the alias of the Black Mask and infiltrated every underground and back alley system until he runs them all. Bruce Wayne and Black Mask basically are the monopoly of night and day in Gotham. You can’t go anywhere without seeing their influence. He’s brutal when it comes to insubordination or even the hint of mutiny. Truly thinks he’s doing the right thing to keep crime as low as possible. Think’s he is doing what he can to protect his family and his city. He’s softened over the years due to his family, and because he’s grown his network where he never has to get his hands dirty unless he wants to. Loves his kids dearly though is tough on them when it comes to the family business.
“Mr. Wayne! Could you give us a comment on the recent movements of the Black Mask? Does it pain you to share your city with such a ruthless man?”
Bruce Wayne gives a smile, that tight, pained one he gives whenever reports ask about the Crime Lord. The media eats it up. No matter what he says, they read into his expression and think it must be heartbreaking for him to know not even he could touch the King of Gotham.
Alfred - AKA Agent Alpha. Like canon, he follows Bruce down the path he takes. In the first couple years of Bruce’s building of the Mask, he voiced his concerns about Bruce’s methods. However, having been trained in special ops himself, he understood that while some situations required a skilled hand, others required a boot to the neck. He adapted and became the guiding hand Bruce needed, and is still Bruce’s number one confidant and ally.
“Black Mask? Black Mask!” the comm had crackled dead in Alfred ear. He huffs and pushes himself up out of the chair. That boy was going to get himself killed in this mission of his. Drug dealers and gang members- What would Martha and Thomas think if they could see the two of them now?
Alfred does not let himself linger long on the thought as he grabs the keys and his own version of the Mask. No matter his hesitance at the start, he knew that there was no stopping Bruce now that he has his mind to it. He would save this city or die trying. He grabs his shotgun off the wall.
Dick - (24) AKA Blue Mask. First to come into the Mask family. His story here is the same for the most part. Some mob tried to take control of the circus- since it's traveling it's not technically in Black Mask’s territory. They are wrong <3. Feeling responsible for not having enough control to prevent the Grayson murders, Bruce Wayne fosters and adopts Dick Grasyon. However, Bruce in this iteration is more open with sharing his secret with Dick as he sees himself in the young boy. He invites Dick to join his crusade to help the city, and let’s Dick be the one to pull the trigger against the men who killed his family. It’s cathartic for the both of them, and a very cementing bonding experience. Dick is Bruce’s shadow for most of his young life, seeing Bruce in his most brutal/hands on years. At some point, Dick “graduates” to having a Mask of his own, and is now Blue Mask.
Dick stays in Gotham in this au. Dick is the eldest of the Mask family and loves his growing family dearly. He learned quickly about the lengths one should go to to protect the ones they love. To him, all of his siblings are the same age as when they entered the house. They are his babies and he will murder for them. He is Bruce’s number one informant.
“There you go, little wing! Hold it just like that and keep your shoulders back. When you feel ready, pull the trigger.” His hands give an encouraging squeeze to his brother's shoulders before taking a step back. He watches as Jason takes a breath and pulls the trigger. He catches him with a laugh when the kickback jolts his small frame. “Good job! That looked like a headshot to me, you're a natural!” Jason looked up at him with shining eyes, and Dick looked back with all the pride in the world. “Let’s show Bruce.”
Jason -  (19)  AKA Red Mask. Bruce found him on the streets when he was young- Yes, he was stealing from THE Black Mask and yes, Jason fought with a tire iron and claws to get away from him at the start. Jason thought Black Mask would make an example out of him, show that even kids weren’t an exception in Gotham. But Bruce took one look at the small, malnourished but resilient boy and fell in love with him. Jason, to Bruce, represents all the kids that he was too late to save. But he could save Jason. Bruce brought him home and exposed his secret immediately, as if Jason was already his son. The reasons Jason stayed were years behind them now, and he’s proven himself time and time again to be Bruce’s perfect foot soldier. He trained under Dick and Bruce and was rewarded with the title and role of a Mask much younger than Dick.
Jason and Bruce had a big fight when he was 16 (probably having to do with who would be inheriting the Black Mask role in the future) in which Jason ran away. Knowing all of Black Masks tricks, he’s able to stay under the radar for a little bit less than a year. It breaks Bruce’s heart and infuriates him. He misses his son and is spiraling at the lack of control and is forced to conclude that he’s going to have to punish Jason if/when he finds him. Which he does, but more on that later. At the present day, Bruce and Jason still butt heads in Jason’s attempt to prove that he can be a leader if Bruce just lets him. Bruce is content in keeping the boys in the roles they have for as long as he can. There are many debates on which Mask was the most intimidating, but everyone can agree that you never want Red Mask to be sent after you.
“I’ll take the lower Eastside-”
“Good idea.” Black Mask cuts him off, “Blue, you’re with Red tonight.”
“What?” Jason snaps, “No way, I can do it by myself.” Black Mask gives him a look that Jason can decipher even through the unchanging skull mask. This wasn’t the night to start a debate. Jason clicks his teeth, “Fine.” Black Mask gives him a pat on the head as he passes and a burning of embarrassment and fulfillment comes from the approval. He slaps away Blue’s hand when he tries to copy the movement, to which Dick whines with disappointment.
Tim -  (17) AKA Yellow Mask. When Gotham sees a heavy crack down for a few months, it’s a near complete cut off from the rest of the world. It shows what Black Mask could do, which scares a lot of people. But not Tim Drake. Tim Drake sees the opportunity for what it is. Unlike the rest of the world, who haven't a clue about the why, 10 year old Tim Drake marches up to Wayne Manor and asks to speak to Black Mask himself. Tim, the child, had known about the Mask family identity for a full year. And now Tim, the child, was offering to help Black Mask, the Crime Lord. Because Tim Drake knew where Jason was. Tim had known the entire time (a fact that Tim does not share.)
(He also doesn’t share the photos. The maps. The red string. He takes his time and eases the family into his presence, and then, into his hobbies.) Tim inserts himself into the Mask Family, brings Jason back, and simply stays. Jason and he have some tension because of this. Tim is happy staying in the shadows of the operation because it gives him a purpose behind all his odd interests and gives him challenges to grow from. He kinda gets the Mask title against his will but secretly is over the moon about it. He wants to be useful. He becomes Wayne Enterprises Co-CEO, and is Bruce’s eyes and ears.
“That's Debbie. She’s the head accountant on the Relay case, 5th floor.” Bruce nods to Tim’s words and Tim pretends not to preen at the knowledge that someone was listening to him. Bruce gives a hum and an ever-so-slight gesture to a man across the room with his glass of scotch. “Oh, Walter. He’s been skimming funds off his department budget for 5 months now. 14th floor.” Bruce raises an eyebrow and looks at him. “He’ll get cocky soon. See the watch? He bought it this week. That's nothing compared to what his internet history suggests.”
Damian - (12) AKA Green Mask. There’s not much to change here. Damian came into Bruce’s life at 8, already trained to kill. Something of a gift from the al Gul’s. Damian is just as brutal as Bruce was in his early years, but Bruce focuses on helping Damian be a child again. All Bruce wants is to be close with his son, much to Damian’s early protests. Bruce is terrible about spoiling Damian and letting him get away with things because Damian is the baby of the family. Because of this, Damian is Bruce’s trigger. Especially for the jobs that have to be done swiftly and quietly.
Damian realizes that there is more to learn then ways to kill, and learns from Dick about the ways of manipulation, how to present oneself to get what you want. With this, Damian often acts younger than he is to appear innocent and lovable. He tried to kill each one of Bruce’s kids at least once when he first came into the house, but after several impressive retaliations, Damian has seen their strength and recognizes how much he can learn from them. The caring nicknames and affectionate hugs were things that he pretends to only tolerate, but he becomes insufferable if he doesn’t receive affection from them.
“But Father, you promised!” Damian stamps his foot, letting the echo of the cave give the action more grandiose than it actually felt. Bruce responds to his childish outbursts more than his calculative reasoning.
Bruce sighs, kneeling down and cupping Damian’s face with gentle hands, “Yes, I know, Dami. But that was before you handcuffed Tim to the stairway railing for three hours.”
Damian crosses his arms and sets a pout to his lips, “He could have gotten out of them if he wanted to,” He mumbles.
“That is not the point and you know that, darling.”

Interesting you talk about the two ways that one can fridge a character, I personally don't always mind the first one, because female characters also have characters they care about die in their backstory for their character development, or male characters can die for other male characters, I think it's only a problem if the work has a pattern of only having female background characters be the ones who die for male ones' motivations, especially if there aren't many female characters in active roles of importance in the story to balance it out. And also how it can become a cliched motivation that is sometimes used in cliched ways in general (like parents dying is overused, whether it's a mother or father and whether the character affected by it is male or female), or a spouse dies and instead of really exploring the complexities of grief and how it affects the character it just becomes one-dimensional brooding or desire for vengeance. So it's overused and in certain works it's a way that female characters in particular are objectified and targeted but it's not inherently bad.
But killing a female character who was important and did have her own story, or at least was being set up to be/had the potential to be that way, in a way that clearly shows they don't care about her potential as a character and only care about the male characters' arcs (and often not even anything interesting in the male character's arcs, just a cheap flash of angst to show how in pain they are and the world revolves around them), that is always bad and never fails to bother me. I hate when the author shows such little care for the story of a genuinely interesting character except as instrumental, and I will definitely be voting for characters like that preferentially.
Hi! Thanks for sharing your thought process. You reference the two ways that a woman can be fridged that I mentioned in my original post (shown below for anyone reading this that doesn't remember)
Tumblr media
While I do agree that the second one is worse, I still think the first way is really bad. I mean, the character death that coined the term "women in refrigerators" falls more in the first category than the second. You say you don't think it's a problem unless it becomes a pattern or there aren't enough living female characters to balance, but like... that's sort of the point. There are A LOT of pieces of media where THERE IS a pattern and THERE AREN'T a lot of female characters.
Also in my opinion, it happening in the first place is enough to make my eyes roll. When I reading or watch a piece of media made by a man, or, am going through a medium that already has a lot of misogyny issues (such as comic books), even if it happens once it's enough. Because whether someone does it to one female character or twenty in a story, it is still a show that they treat their female characters are inherently more disposable than their male characters. Even in pieces of media that kill off multiple characters of different genders, the death of male characters are given more narrative weight. (Ex. Think of Batman. Both of his parents die but a vast majority of works that display him grieving his parents either show him grieving them both as a unit, or they specifically talk much more about his father Thomas Wayne. They will give Thomas Wayne a whole relationship with his son, a whole career and personality, and Martha Wayne will... kind of be there. Not in all Batman media, but in most)
I'm sure there are examples of things that count as fridged that aren't as bad as others, but the fact that it's happening in the first place sort of continues this idea of female characters being disposable. "What will motivate the hero? Give him a dead mother/girlfriend/sister/whatever! Who cares that we create women just to hurt or kill them!!!!"
Not to mention, in my opinion, killing characters to motivate other characters/make them sad, no matter the gender, is just lazy writing.
Of course, when voting starts, you are free to vote for whichever fridged women that you think were wronged by the narrative. That's the point of a poll tournament!

If you’re comfortable sharing, I’d love to hear more about your thoughts/ideas about religion/the afterlife, and how that’s influencing your Batman religion fic!
the tl;dr is that I'm a cradle Episcopalian whose mother is an Episcopal priest and that's deeply influenced my view on both the afterlife and religion in general. Personally? My view on the afterlife is...probably closest to the "heaven and hell aren't any kind of physical place or specific experience, it's eternal communion/separation from God's grace and your loved ones" interpretation.
Generally, I think that organized religion should be a way for people to come together under a general agreement of doctrine and behavior, discuss/argue about any deep difficult questions they have about the universe together, and experience the divine as a collective. I'm happy with the Episcopal Church and I've never felt a reason to deeply question my commitment to their particular understanding of the Christian tradition; I like the beliefs, rituals, and practice I grew up with and even though I've explored other denominations and other religions altogether, I've always landed right back where I started. They're a progressive denomination that, as a collective body, is genuinely committed to living out what I see as God's mission for humanity: caring for the world as it has been given to us and loving and helping our neighbors as ourselves. So I stay here.
As far as those beliefs affect the 'Bruce Wayne Religion Discourse Fic' (as I've lovingly termed it):
DC has decided on multiple occasions that Bruce is an atheist, to which I say: that's dumb DC, you have multiple pantheons running around and one of his best friends was literally the Goddess of Truth for a bit. The Abrahamic god canonically exists in-universe and the Spectre is his wrath embodied. The afterlife is a place people can physically go to and come back from (otherwise resurrection couldn't happen). This is the hill I die on when it comes to comics and it's that absolutely no character who lives in that universe should be an atheist (I've talked a little bit about this before here in regards to Tim Drake). They can be a non-worshipper, and frankly that's a completely understandable place to be in the DCU, but being a non-believer makes them look unbelievably dumb and illogical.
Anyway: Bruce is canonically Jewish due to the Accidental Jewish Retcon, which happened when DC created Kate Kane, an explicitly Jewish character, in 2005 and then made her Bruce's maternal cousin. This makes Martha Wayne (and thus Bruce) ethnically Jewish. However, it is ALSO canonically true that Thomas and Martha were buried as Christians, and the Waynes have been heavily coded as Episcopalian for decades. And yet he's supposedly atheist despite growing up in two religious institutions that have long-standing and exceptionally forgiving traditions around questioning/challenging divine authority, exploring doubt, and doing deep dives into theological doctrine.
So we're in an interesting place where Bruce canonically grew up in an interfaith household until his parents were murdered and also explicitly explored the tenets of multiple religions and spiritual practices during his training years abroad. And yet no writer wants to touch it! We get oblique references to his Jewish heritage occasionally, but other than that we largely do not see religion happen in Batman stories unless the central character is Helena Bertinelli/Huntress (a devout Catholic) or Jean-Paul Valley/Azrael (a cult survivor who basically acts devoutly Catholic). So I went 'well okay, I'll do it.' So the fic is focused on Bruce’s childhood growing up in an interfaith household and his incredibly complicated relationship with organized religion as he grows up, becomes Batman, and starts acquiring kids.
While I have not written anything except a tentative outline for it, I think my own beliefs are probably affecting how I approach the fic even conceptually, as I'm both Episcoplian (influencing how I'll approach that part of Bruce's exploration) and more than happy to explore my personal headcanon that Bruce ends up with a frankenstein set of beliefs that mix-and-match Episcopalian Christianity, Reform Judaism, Buddhism, and a few other things. It would be difficult not to, given all that he's seen, done, and experienced. Bruce is a very skeptical person who deeply believes 'seeing is believing', and I'll be trying my best to balance Bruce's canonical approach to such matters with how the DCU has portrayed religion and how the varying religions deal with massive soul-searching questions IRL.
......also I simply think that if Ollie Queen ever tells him that he met Jason in heaven/the afterlife while he was dead, Bruce would go home and cry for an hour, and I kind of want to write that scene.

I had gotten an anon ask awhile ago (I would go dig but I am tired) about other reincarnated occurrences in The Dead Rabbit, which lead me to trying to figure out how to include Polly, which hadn’t been on my mind, and lead me to write this. I don’t know when I’ll include it (far down the line) so enjoy! 😊
Rose never left her spot as her son padded back through the house, barefoot and half dressed, skin scrubbed and scalding. She finished her tea and stared at the cup left relatively untouched by Charlotte as he took her spot.
“Don’t. She’s not here to dump it.”
“Yes, Thomas, and if someone else were to it would skew it. I think sometimes you forget I’m your mother and that I’ve taught you these things, and not the other way around.”
He huffed, brow furrowed, and pulled the shirt over his head and the cigarette case from the pocket of the black denim pants followed once he could see once more. Her tone struck him differently than usual.
“It’s her, by the way. She’s split, just like you.”
“Clearly.” His brow quirked with a turn of his head as two of the maids stopped and talked in passing outside of the door, “Split?”
“Thomas. Haven’t you listened any time we’ve had this conversation,” she huffed as he lit the cigarette much to his mothers wordless protest.
“C’mon, I’ll be gone in a few days and then you can go back to pretending us Shelby’s aren’t all walking chimneys, eh?”
He offered the cigarette case to her and she took one and lit it with a sigh.
“Dooi lesco thee,” she poured herself another cup of tea as she spoke the words, elaborating although she didn’t need to, “Two soul. Your auras are both split.”
Something clicked in his mind at the Romani words she spoke. “And you, eh?” He asked as he ashed the cigarette in the untouched tea. “I can’t think of a good reason someone would want to go to the effort to learn Romani, unless they already knew it.”
His jaw was set waiting for his mothers response. “It’s not the same as you, Thomas. I get blips and bits of Polly, and Martha, in chunks. I’m a female vessel, that’s why. They give me their knowledge, their wisdom but they don’t stay. I am not them and they are not me.”
He gave a dark chuckle, shaking his head as he rubbed the bridge of his nose with his free hand, “Did the infinite wisdom of Polly Gray tell you to hide it from me for 37 years?”
“I knew it would be easier to explain—“
He shook his head, standing from the table, “I don’t want to hear it right now. I’ve fought with that man,” he said, pointing in the general direction of his fathers office, “my whole life, to get him to believe me, and now you tell me—“
“Polly was important to him, Thomas. I know. I knew you’d never react well because of how things ended. You won’t send you family to hang in the gallows this time, you won’t lose your brother, you won’t have the same problems he had.” She stood, leaving her tea untouched, “I didn’t think you needed the guilt.”

Sunday 6 January 1833
8
11 ¼
fine morning hard frost F39 ½° at 8 just before lighting my fire – breakfast at 9 5 in an hour with my father and Marian soon came – at my desk at 10 10 - wrote 2 ½ pages to Dr Belcombe – really know not what to write or should have written sooner - ‘I never exactly understood before what nervousness meant and God grant that I may know no more of it in any case which concerns me much! nothing could be more judicious than your letter to Mr Sunderland’ – he a great friend of Dr Paley’s – paid not give me a vote of thanks for taking Miss W- to Dr Belcombe  ‘All I can say is, she really seems to prefer you as a medical man to all who have ever attended her, and that if I had time for nursing, I think our united efforts might be of service - but I am a young practitioner and my courage us much abated - it is dreary to combat sickness without disease, and misery without reason – medicals come [9.S.] from Mr Sunderland; but all I hear is that you and he are agreed as to the course to be pursued - I am to count the letters you have written, for the purpose of taking care that your pen shall not have laboured in vain. It is some satisfaction to me that you will ,at least be remembered, as among the cleverest and most agreeable of medicinae doctores and, should you be applied to when I am gone, I am sure you will do the best that such a case admits, in which the manner will do more than medicine, is the maxima veritas et praevalebit [the greatest truth will prevail]’ – would try to make time for another day on in, if I thought, it would do any good but my hopes not sanguine – will however, on my own account, see them all again if I am before my leaving England – but fear being kept here ‘till the utmost limit of my time, the end of this month or very beginning of the next – anxious to be off. ‘May this new year be felix ter et amplius [happy three times more]! Very faithfully yours. A.L.’  - then wrote letter about 2/3 of a p. rather small and close to Mr. Lister (Swansea) – saying I remitted him bill at 21 days for £35.3 deducting [?] £1.12.0 for insurance – sorry had come to no agreement about the water level gained – 6ft. valued at £6 a year of which ½ belonged to him – had sent 2 law-letters and had 2 valuations and expense already between 3 and 4 pounds, but this should come out of the annual rent to be paid – or if I could get nothing would charge him nothing – vid. Business letter book vol. 2 – downstairs at 11 50 – from 12 in ¾ hour read the prayers and sermon 26 Mr Knight – at my desk at 1 ¼ - Letter from M- (Lawton) 3 pages and ends 3 lines of crossing widely written - ‘I hope and think you will find him (Thomas Beech) a valuable servant - he can read, write and cast accounts’ - then in the few lines dated yesterday adds ‘Thomas Beech agrees to all your proposals’ – i.e. £20 a year including washing and to be engaged from the 30th inst. and clean the carriage unless I hereafter order otherwise, but at any rate to clean it abroad and do all I desire him - Had I mentioned Martha Booth sooner would have taken her as under housemaid - should the one engaged not suit, will think of Martha - would not do for kitchen maid who must be a pretty good cook - ‘she has all the servants’ hall meals to prepare, both white and brown bread to make, and will have to
SH:7/ML/E/15/0176
come as cook here whenever we happen to be over’ ‘the account you give me of your health and spirits delights me much I feel now as if come what may you will be happy and comfortable, it often made me unhappy to think your sole dependence should be on a prop which seemed hardly trustworthy you will see if Charles does not long outlive me, yet I am not ill, nor I do wish not to live, but somehow I feel, and have always felt, as if there was a period that with my constitution would be trying, it may or may not be so, this much of anticipation arises more form what may be, than any indisposition at present, for I am in pretty tolerable health tho’ not a little harassed’  expecting poor old Molly Ownes’ death the old woman (her great favourite) at the Liverpool Lodge - ‘her views of this life as connected with the future are clearer than those of anything I ever met with’ - and M-  has had much consolation from her - Miss Lawton going to marry an army surgeon a widower a Mr Hyne comes from Devonshire saying he makes £500 or £600 a year by his profession - but having no private fortune and 2 children the youngest 10th months old - Mr L- is indignant and refuses his consent - her brother, William L- equally angry - M- says little - wrote 3 pages and ends and under the seal (till 4 10) in answer - ‘I was beginning, my dearest Mary, to be rather impatient for your letter - it is come and has given me much comfort and pleasure - I am satisfied with what you say of yourself - tho’ I hope and trust your anticipation is groundless, yet it is well to set our house in order betimes, and you go about it so calmly, and so happily, that I have no motive for gainsaying - I am glad to have had it - my power to speak so comfortably of myself - you know the bitterness that providence has been pleased to mingle in my draught of life, but I have really learnt to consider it as making the beverage more wholesome, and to take with thankfulness - In fact, Mary, tho’ my conversion is of less long standing than it ought to be, surely it will be lasting as sincere, and, I trust, you will have no occasion to think of me again but with cheerfulness and satisfaction - We cannot tell the n° of our days, but, should we both live longer than you expect, I still hope to congratulate you on a brighter evening than noonday clouds have promised - I grieve over the loss you will have in poor Molly Owen’...... suppose she (M-) will be off to Leamington on the 14th beg to hear from her again 1st if only to give me Thomas’s address - wonder how Eugenie will suit me - have taken one of John’s daughter (will be 14 in a day or two) to bring up as Lady’s maid - shall tell M- my plan and advise with her at Leamington - thanks about Martha Booth - an under housemaid place must be ‘the utmost height she is fit to aspire to’ - sorry for Miss Lawton’s match ‘you say nothing about little Mariana - I have often wished it was possible to trace in her the smallest resemblance to you - what do you hear from York?’ - dare not attempt to fix a day for being off - expense here still going on to the amount of a couple of hundreds more - she must console me - shall have must to say at Leamington - not to forget to take all my letters ‘let us have the burning we have talked of ever since May - I am convinced you are right - we had better get it over before my going abroad again - I know nothing about my return - my aunt and father are both wonderfully well, and may live several years - a life of exertion suits me best - and, unless particularly called home, why should I hurry back? the new year is cold, but may you find it a happier than many of the years that are gone! I like to hear from you if it be but a line or two, so, busy or not, let me see your handwriting - God bless you Mary! there is to all a prop that cannot fail, and you and I may lean upon the same tho’ not together - I am well and happy and very especially and entirely yours AL’.
Added ½ dozen lines of crossing to M- to mention how nearly the farm house I have lately spent about £300 upon was burnt down yesterday week - from a [combers] stove being heated in an upstairs room - fire broke out about 4pm and out at 6 the watering pond being full of water and only one end of the house damaged.
wrote the last 27 lines in 25 minutes till 4 35 - then wrote 3 pages and ends pretty small and close to IN- should have written before but waited to tell her about my plans and about the man servant I was in treaty for and who, as I only heard this morning, agrees to my proposals and is engaged from the 30th of this month - hope IN- will not go to Croft before quite the end - if Mrs N- quite satisfied to have given up the Bath scheme, I am delighted as I have not quite given up the hope of having a peep at them but bare not say or think much about it for fear of disappointment - always one potheration or another to keep me here and put me to expense - mentioned Park-farm house being nearly burnt down yesterday week - will write to Mrs. N- when I know more of my plans - only know at present that I shall take Leamington en route, and see M- some of them will be there on the 14th and she hopes to be settled there on a week afterwards - If I can get off from here by the very end of this month or beginning of next shall be satisfied - should like best to go first, as I always intended, to Italy but uncertain yet whether I shall not be obliged to remain within reach for sometime to come - not on account of my aunt or father - they wonderfully well - will write to aunt Maria when I can tell her I am en route - joke and advise IN- not to mind the vulgarity of Esther’s mother in law - we do not marry a whole family at one fell swoop - in these times the high and low are oddity jostled together - the great fallen and the little ones grown big.....  dinner at 6 25 – at 7 10 sent off by John my letters to M- ‘Lawton hall, Lawton, Cheshire’ and to IN- ‘Langton hall, Malton’ – and to ‘Dr. Belcombe minster yard York’ and to ‘John Lister Esquire Swansea Glamorganshire’ wrote the last 15  lines till 7 25 – then standing by the fire, and looking a little into Horace, and asleep on the sofa till  9 10 – so cold in the drawing room cannot sit to do anything   I must give it up and come to my room

26th March >> Mass Readings (Except USA)
Fifth Sunday of Lent, Cycle A
(Liturgical Colour: Violet)
First Reading Ezekiel 37:12-14 I shall put my spirit in you, and you will live.
The Lord says this: I am now going to open your graves; I mean to raise you from your graves, my people, and lead you back to the soil of Israel. And you will know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves and raise you from your graves, my people. And I shall put my spirit in you, and you will live, and I shall resettle you on your own soil; and you will know that I, the Lord, have said and done this – it is the Lord who speaks.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 129(130)
R/ With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption.
Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord, Lord, hear my voice! O let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleading.
R/ With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption.
If you, O Lord, should mark our guilt, Lord, who would survive? But with you is found forgiveness: for this we revere you.
R/ With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption.
My soul is waiting for the Lord. I count on his word. My soul is longing for the Lord more than watchman for daybreak. (Let the watchman count on daybreak and Israel on the Lord.)
R/ With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption.
Because with the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption, Israel indeed he will redeem from all its iniquity.
R/ With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption.
Second Reading Romans 8:8-11 The Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you.
People who are interested only in unspiritual things can never be pleasing to God. Your interests, however, are not in the unspiritual, but in the spiritual, since the Spirit of God has made his home in you. In fact, unless you possessed the Spirit of Christ you would not belong to him. Though your body may be dead it is because of sin, but if Christ is in you then your spirit is life itself because you have been justified; and if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, then he who raised Jesus from the dead will give life to your own mortal bodies through his Spirit living in you.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Gospel Acclamation John 11:25, 26
Glory and praise to you, O Christ! I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord; whoever believes in me will never die. Glory and praise to you, O Christ!
Either:
Gospel John 11:1-45 I am the resurrection and the life.
There was a man named Lazarus who lived in the village of Bethany with the two sisters, Mary and Martha, and he was ill. It was the same Mary, the sister of the sick man Lazarus, who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair. The sisters sent this message to Jesus, ‘Lord, the man you love is ill.’ On receiving the message, Jesus said, ‘This sickness will end not in death but in God’s glory, and through it the Son of God will be glorified.’
Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, yet when he heard that Lazarus was ill he stayed where he was for two more days before saying to the disciples, ‘Let us go to Judaea.’ The disciples said, ‘Rabbi, it is not long since the Jews wanted to stone you; are you going back again?’ Jesus replied:
‘Are there not twelve hours in the day? A man can walk in the daytime without stumbling because he has the light of this world to see by; but if he walks at night he stumbles, because there is no light to guide him.’
He said that and then added, ‘Our friend Lazarus is resting, I am going to wake him.’ The disciples said to him, ‘Lord, if he is able to rest he is sure to get better.’ The phrase Jesus used referred to the death of Lazarus, but they thought that by ‘rest’ he meant ‘sleep’, so Jesus put it plainly, ‘Lazarus is dead; and for your sake I am glad I was not there because now you will believe. But let us go to him.’ Then Thomas – known as the Twin – said to the other disciples, ‘Let us go too, and die with him.’
On arriving, Jesus found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days already. Bethany is only about two miles from Jerusalem, and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to sympathise with them over their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus had come she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in the house. Martha said to Jesus, ‘If you had been here, my brother would not have died, but I know that, even now, whatever you ask of God, he will grant you.’ ‘Your brother’ said Jesus to her ‘will rise again.’ Martha said, ‘I know he will rise again at the resurrection on the last day.’ Jesus said:
‘I am the resurrection and the life. If anyone believes in me, even though he dies he will live, and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?’
‘Yes, Lord,’ she said ‘I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come into this world.’
When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in a low voice, ‘The Master is here and wants to see you.’ Hearing this, Mary got up quickly and went to him. Jesus had not yet come into the village; he was still at the place where Martha had met him. When the Jews who were in the house sympathising with Mary saw her get up so quickly and go out, they followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
Mary went to Jesus, and as soon as she saw him she threw herself at his feet, saying, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.’ At the sight of her tears, and those of the Jews who followed her, Jesus said in great distress, with a sigh that came straight from the heart, ‘Where have you put him?’ They said, ‘Lord, come and see.’ Jesus wept; and the Jews said, ‘See how much he loved him!’ But there were some who remarked, ‘He opened the eyes of the blind man, could he not have prevented this man’s death?’ Still sighing, Jesus reached the tomb: it was a cave with a stone to close the opening. Jesus said, ‘Take the stone away.’ Martha said to him, ‘Lord, by now he will smell; this is the fourth day.’ Jesus replied, ‘Have I not told you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?’ So they took away the stone. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said:
‘Father, I thank you for hearing my prayer. I knew indeed that you always hear me, but I speak for the sake of all these who stand round me, so that they may believe it was you who sent me.’
When he had said this, he cried in a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, here! Come out!’ The dead man came out, his feet and hands bound with bands of stuff and a cloth round his face. Jesus said to them, ‘Unbind him, let him go free.’
Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary and had seen what he did believed in him.
The Gospel of the Lord
R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

What’s the first thing that sexually attracts you to someone? What’s your favourite place to be kissed? What’s your dirtiest sexual fantasy? What was your most embarrassing sexual experience? Have you ever had an inappropriate crush?
[SINDAY MEME]

*gulps*
What’s the first thing that sexually attracts you to someone?
"Probably, a sense of humour and someone who is quite thoughtful with how they handle a situation, someone I learn to trust, I'm not a fan of anyone who loses their temper in sensitive situations or gets overconfident when they've not been given any reason to be so...I'm not very trusting until I'm given good reason too..."
What’s your favourite place to be kissed?
"I'm a fan of kisses anywhere...above the belt at least now anyway...unless your going to give me a good time, you'd get punched for going much lower"
What’s your dirtiest sexual fantasy?
"Being tied to a tree and fucked by a junior officer...that was a recurring dream in my youth...the whole kidnap, rescue adrenaline fuck thing..."
What was your most embarrassing sexual experience?
"It was probably the first time, I had sex...in the back of a car with someone, that was awkward, to say the least, that's not to say it wasn't good, but it was cramped, I didn't know what the fuck to do with my hands and well, I didn't last very long either"
Have you ever had an inappropriate crush?
"Maybe one or two, I had one on someone who was over ten years older than me and someone who was nearly ten years younger than me, I can't say I haven't seen younger women on TV and thought, 'Id nail that' because I have...I did at one point panic that I'd grown a crush on Thomas's wife, Martha, I-I just put it down to the drugs these days, I wasn't in the right frame of mind to know what I wanted"

1: age 16 and 18, Charlie’s yard
You were 16, he was 18. It was on New Year’s Eve; the Shelby’s had decided to invite a few people to the yard to celebrate the new year of 1909 and it was close to 12 AM. You remember the day like it happened yesterday even if it was years ago. Back then, Tommy was happier, more alive, laughed more, smiled a lot and especially at you. Nobody failed to notice how his eyes lit up when you walked in the room. How, every time someone made a joke, his eyes would search for you to see if you smiled because your smile seemed to be his favorite thing in the world.
“10… 9… 8…”
The past year, 1908, you had grown closer to Tommy than ever before and you, too, sought out his smile when someone joked. Your ears seemed to turn towards his laugh whenever you heard him and you blushed profusely when he caught you staring. It was safe to say you had a little crush on Tommy.
But that evening, you realized you loved him. It was just a simple moment, nothing special, he didn’t save you from any harm, he was just… There.
You walked onto Charlie Strong’s yard and greeted the Shelbys like you always did. Hugs for Ada, Polly and John, greeting Martha with a handshake, Arthur boomed out your name while he was passing drinks to the guests and you waved back at him and little Finn was clinging to your leg before he got pulled away by his friends to play. And then there was Tommy.
He was talking to Charlie Strong and Johnny Dogs, a bright smile on his face and a laugh escaping him as Johnny said something you couldn’t make out.“Look who’s here, eh!” John called out to Tommy while he wrapped an arm around your shoulder and pulled you towards him.
“Alright John,” Tommy chuckled and playfully slapped his hand away from your shoulders, “Hands off, that’s my property.”
And while it was just teasing and joking around, your heart had jumped up to your throat and the butterflies turned into elephants. With those words, with just a joke, you knew you loved him and wanted to be his.
“7… 6.. 5…”
“Tommy, where are we going?” You laughed as Tommy pulled you along, hand in yours and a happy smile on each of your faces.“You’ll see, patience is a virtue darling,” Tommy answered and pulled a little harder, “c’mon.”
You weren’t too far away from Charlie’s yard, but far away enough to only hear the laughter when it was loud enough. Tommy suddenly stopped and you almost walked into him. He sat down and pulled you along so you’d be seated next to him.
“We’re going to watch the fireworks from here. Less screaming children and the noise isn’t as bad.”
You chuckled and raised an eyebrow; never before had you two ran off to god knows where to escape the noise, why now?
“4… 3…”
You looked at Tommy, they were counting down loud enough for you two to hear and suddenly you had the urge to tell him.
“2… 1…”
So you did,“I love you Thomas Shelby.” You whispered softly but loud enough for the words to reach his ears.
“HAPPY NEW YEAR!”
And he answered. Not with words, but with a kiss. He gently took your face in his hands and brought his lips closer to yours, calling out your name in a soft whisper before he placed his lips on yours.
------------
2: age 22 and 24, the train station
1914, the king had declared war on Germany after having offered an ultimatum and the Germans not accepting said ultimatum.
It had been on the front pages of each paper: Great Britain was at war with Germany and the army was looking for men who’d fight for king and country. And of course your dear boys had to sign up.
You and Polly had been furious when you found out they were drafted and here you stood. On the train station, waiting for the train to depart with Arthur, Tommy and John. After that kiss at New Year’s Eve, neither you nor Tommy had spoken about it. In fact, you went about your life as usual; you visited often, helped Polly with Ada and Finn (mostly Finn at that, Ada was getting more and more independent) and you and Tommy were back at being best friends. And it had hurt. He had started seeing a certain girl; Greta, was her name. But she died a little before this day.
After Greta had died, Tommy had been heartbroken and therefore not sad when he got drafted. While Arthur and John were happy to fight for their country, Tommy was glad to go so his mind would be distracted.
“Do you have to go, Tom?” You asked Tommy who stood in front of you. You smoothed out the nonexistent wrinkles in his jacket and reached up to fix a few strands of his hair.
“You know I have to,” he answered monotonously, “They ask us to fight for our country, we won’t say no. We’ll be home by Christmas, you’ll see.”
You nodded a little. They had said it would be like that; the men would be home by Christmas and the war would be over by then. So you’d let him go.
“Just come back to me…” you muttered and cast your eyes to the ground. You could no longer stand to look at his eyes. So bright, so blue, so full of life, so… Enthusiastic.
“Look at me, eh,” Tommy said. He called out your name and repeated his words while hooking a finger underneath your chin to make you look at him.So you complied; god knows when you’d see him again.
“I’ll come back, I promise.”
“Please Tom…” you shed a tear, the first of many to follow, “Please don’t say that, don’t make promises you can’t keep.”
He ignored your plea completely and moved his hand to cup you cheek softly, the other was resting on your hip.
“I’ll come back for you.” He told you sternly.
The whistle sounded, announcing that the train would leave soon and that all should board.
“I love you Tommy,” you told him and placed your hand over his, leaning into his hand and turning your hand to press a soft kiss to his palm.“Come back to me.”
------------
3: age 30 and 32, Shelby’s residence
They had all come back. The men all came back from the horse races, Arthur and John were celebrating in the Garrison but you were at home. The Shelby’s residence that is.
Tommy wasn’t with the men who came back. Polly had noticed as well but was convinced Tommy was off minding his own business as usual and being all secretive.
“It’s Tommy fucking Shelby,” she had said, “God knows what that man is up to these days.”
But you didn’t trust those words. Something told you that not everything was alright with Tommy but you decided to ignore that little voice in your head and go about your day.
He’d come back to you… He always did… He promised that day he came back from the war.
The war had taken longer than expected and you had to miss Tommy for 4 years. The letters you wrote each other were becoming inconsistent until Tommy’s letters didn’t come at all. They told you Arthur, John and Tommy had died, their whole troop had. But apparently, they weren’t dead and when you saw Tommy on that train station in Birmingham, you just couldn’t hold back your tears as he approached you and pulled you into a tight hug.
“I’m here,” he had said softly, “I’m alive. I’m here and I’ll never leave you again.”
Though it soon had become clear that your Tommy wasn’t fully back. Sure, he was there, his blue eyes as observant as ever but he had gotten quiet. His eyes weren’t as lively as before; they had seen too much death to celebrate life. The medals he had won, he had thrown in the Cut and he took the business over from Polly and even Arthur. He became the leader of the Peaky Blinders and engaged in illegal things. Things you didn’t ask about as long as you didn’t need to know. Tommy had been acting weird today; Ada told you he had stopped by and written a letter, a letter that she didn’t need to see but did need to post and he had been acting weird around you as well. He was… Touching you more.
After the war, he had withdrawn himself from emotion – so it seemed – and therefore touching as well. But today he had been constantly touching you, his hand never leaving you and if he did, he made sure to be back as soon as humanely possible. And then he went to those races. He had vaguely briefed you in on what was to happen today.
“We’re going legal today,” Tommy had said while pulling you closer by wrapping his arm around you shoulders, “Shelby Company Ltd. Will be legal and I’ll buy you all the clothes you want, eh? How about that?”
“I don’t need clothes, Tommy,” you had snickered and raised your eyebrows at him, “Just be careful out there, okay?”
Finally. You heard a door open and close and Tommy walked into the house. He seemed shaken, his hair was a mess and there was dirt on his hands and dried blood on the side of his face.
Your relieved smile immediately turned upside down. You got up so fast that your chair clattered to the floor as you rushed towards him, your hands cupping his face for an inspection.
“’s not my blood,” Tommy told you gravely. He let you check him nonetheless but eventually he called out your name a few times, asking you to just leave it already.
“Where were you Tommy? What happened? The others have been back and celebrating for a while now, why weren’t you with them?”
You shot your questions almost immediately, followed up by weak pushes against his chest.
Tommy caught your wrist and pulled you closer, halting your actions.
“I’ll explain later. I just-” He trailed off and let his head hang, lowering his hands and loosening the grip on your wrists.
And you knew that now was not the time to yell at him.
So you wrapped your arms around his neck and pulled him closer. With a little hesitancy in his actions, Tommy wrapped his arms around your wrist and buried his face in your neck and you could’ve sworn you felt a few tears on your skin.
“It’s okay Tommy…” you whispered in his ear, “You’re home… You’re here… I love you.”
------------
4: age 30 and 32, Arrow House
Once again, New Year’s Eve. It’s just like every year since 1908; you get thrown back to the moment where you were 16, when you were brave enough to tell Tommy that you love him and he kissed you and how nothing ever came from it either. You know you told him you loved him more times than you thought you would’ve dared, but still… Neither you nor Tommy ever took the next step.
The next step… What was the next step? You kissed, you told him you loved him… Would the next step be him telling you he loved you? Did he love you like you love him?
“You coming?” Tommy peeked around the corner of the kitchen door, his eyes scanning the room for a second before he walked towards you. You who out of boredom had started to help the servants clean the dishes.
“You know I have maids for that, right?” Tommy snickered.
He seemed cheerier than usual, perhaps being with family and friends did that to Tommy. The smile even reached his eyes and his eyes seemed to glisten with a certain look.
“I know, but I needed to escape the noise for a second.” You told Tommy with a shrug and put down the plate you were washing, a maid almost immediately took it from you as you approached Tommy, drying your hands and placing the towel on the kitchen counter once you were close enough to him.
“Ada would be happy to hear you felt like helping the maids.”
Tommy raised his eyebrows and held up his arm for you to take. You did and he led you out but not to the living room where everyone was drinking and waiting for the clock to strike 12.
Instead, he took you outside to the stables. The horses were out in the field, the night wasn’t that cold and the stable boy would probably bring them inside before the fireworks begun.
The night was, however, cold enough for you to shiver and for Tommy to take off his jacket and place it on your shoulders, his arm soon joining the jacket.
“You remember the New Year’s Eve of 1908/1909?” Tommy suddenly asked you.
You couldn’t help yourself, you laughed awkwardly and felt your cheeks heat up significantly.
“Yeah I remember, I remember each year ever since,” you told honestly and shook your head a bit.
“How young and naive I was…” you muttered under your breath but Tommy, as observant as ever, heard you. He hummed dismissively and shook his head, stopping in his tracks.
Again, you weren’t that far away from the family, you heard them as they started the countdown and, honestly, your mind could only dwell on one memory.
“10… 9… 8…”
“You weren’t that naive,” Tommy said softly as he placed his hands on your sides, turning you around to face him. The moon shone brightly through the clouds, reflecting in his eyes. The normally ocean blue turned colder but no less kind towards you. You imagine this was the kind of blue his enemies would see, less kindness in them though, before they met their creator.
“7… 6… 5…”
Tommy cupped your face again, much like he did that New Year and suddenly you were 16 and 18 again, not 32 and 34. Suddenly his hair was a little darker, his eyes a little livelier.
“You remember what you told me that night?” Tommy whispered.
Of course you did, how could you forget? It was either the best decision ever made or the worst mistake in your life and here you were, 16 years later and still wondering which one it was.
“4… 3…”
“Of course I remember Tom.” You whispered back. Your lips were almost upon his and you felt his breath warm your cooled lips as he whispered one simple request.
“Tell me…. Tell me what you told me that night.”
You stayed quiet for a second. Mauled over his request as well as being curious as to why he would want you to repeat your words.
“2… 1…”
“I love you Thomas Shelby.”
“HAPPY NEW YEAR!”
“I know.”
And he kissed you again.
------------
 5: age 32 and 34, the hospital
It was a charity dinner and everything seemed to go alright. The rich people – incredibly boring as they were – all donated a sum of money to the Shelby institute. But everything went to shit when everyone got called to go to the dining room.
Some man pushed his way through the crowd towards Tommy and you.
You two were just talking, he was hastily trying to explain some things but before he could get to his point, the man yelled something.
“You need to eat Tommy, you’ll be no good when you’re half dead.”
“For angel!” and the next thing you know is darkness surrounding you and a godawful pain in your side.
Polly placed a hand on her nephews shoulder but he shrugged it off almost immediately.
“It’s my fault, Pol, that bullet was meant for me.” You heard Tommy’s voice. It seemed deeper, sadder. It was what made you open your eyes.
“Tom?” You croaked out, turning your head as your eyes slowly focused on his face.“I’m here, darling, I’m here.” Tommy immediately said, his hand squeezing yours gently.
“What-? Where-?” You looked around confused and then you noticed the dull ache in your side.
“You’re in the hospital,” Tommy said, “You got shot two weeks ago… At the charity dinner…”
You heard the emotion in his voice, you heard how he strained to keep talking and while Tommy Shelby never was a man of many emotions, he seemed to tear up at the sight of you laying there in the hospital bed, pale and clearly in pain.
“I’m so sorry,” Tommy spoke your name in a soft plea; he begged for you to stay, to forgive him but he wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to go.
“Tommy,” You said, your voice slowly returning to you after he helped you take a few sips from a cup filled with water. “I’m alive, I’m okay or at least… I will be okay.”
Tommy looked up and rose from his chair. It was like you could read his mind; you shuffled carefully in bed, making a bit of space for him to sit next to you and look you in the eye.
Tommy put his forehead against yours, closing his eyes and placing a soft kiss on your lips.
“I could’ve lost you- I thought I had,” he said sternly and leaned closer, “And I never got to tell you… I was planning on telling you… Every time you told me, I wanted to tell you… But I couldn’t- The words didn’t want to leave my lips…”
And after 22 years he finally told you what he had wanted to tell you since he was 12 and you were just 10.He remembered how he had seen you, 10 years old, caring for a horse and calming it down with your soft voice. He remembered how he had thought ‘Yeah… That is the one.’ He remembered how he realized he loved you and never stopped, even if he had tried to forget about it with other people. It was always you… And he finally got to say those sweet words. A fact you already knew yet it didn’t fail to make your heart skip a beat or two.
“I love you.”

Wholesome BatFamily Fic Rec’s
Hey All, so here is my BatFam Rec List you all have been asking for! Lol jk no one has asked for this, but I made it anyways! So here are my All-Time Favorite BatFamily Fic Recs, for the most part these Recs are all rated either “G” for General Audiences or “T” for Teen and Up Audiences. So basically, all these fics focus on family dynamics and relationships rather than slash or anything like that. These are all truly amazing fics so give your Kudos and love to the authors! And remember to always read the tags before you read the fic!
And So This is Christmas by DragOnstOrm
Summary: It's not that Alfred isn't happy with his job. It's just that sometimes he really wishes that he had known what he was getting into when he signed up for it.
Rating: General Audiences
Word Count: 1,901
My Comments: Folks, stories don’t get much more wholesome than this fic. After reading this fic I was left warm and happy. Also, it stars my boy, Alfie, which is usually extremely rare for fics. Loved that we got to see Alfred’s perspective in this! Great fic!
Bedside Manner by @fishfingersandjellybabies
Summary: Sometimes Bruce forgot just how great his kid was.
Rating: General Audiences
Word Count: 2,985
My Comments: Anything @fishfingersandjellybabies writes is truly fantastic, but I particularly loved this one since it delved into the sweeter side of Bruce and Damian’s relationship that we don’t get to see often (especially in cannon). I love me a good hurt/comfort fic 😉
 Bet on it by @lysical
Summary: Even Damian could admit that his older siblings occasionally had their uses.
"I need your assistance," Damian said, voice low and tense.
"No," Jason replied, and hung up.
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Word Count: 2,495
My Comments: Lysical writes some of the best BatBrother Fics out there, folks. So if you want some wholesome and hilarious Bat sibling bonding, then look no further! Bet on it, is one of my personal favorites of Lysical’s. Great writing and great characterization!
Blood in the Water by MishaBerry
Summary: We all do stupid things when we are lonely, and in faraway lands, we hardly expect the consequences to follow us. Bruce certainly never thought twice about an American woman in Jaipur after one night with her. He hardly expected to see her ever again.
The universe, on the other hand, had different ideas, and the tides of time and chance brought Tim Drake to Bruce's life over and over again.
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Word Count: 181,939
My Comments: FANTASTIC AU! One of my favorite Tim Drake centric fics, but still has plenty of the rest of the BatFamily. I also love that we get to see Tim as his sweet six-year self. This story has it all, great characterizations, good plot, angst, fluff, and BatFamily bonding 😊
Cracked Foundation by @cdelphiki
Summary: The last thing Damian expected to happen when he ran away from home was to spend a day crammed into a small space with Jason Todd. His father's second son was a black sheep. An outcast. An angry, insanity driven criminal who enjoyed screwing with the batfamily in every way he could. At least, that's what Damian thought. Maybe he was wrong about Todd.
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Word Count: 20,902
My Comments: This is a brilliant fic that examines the relationship between Damian and Jason. I absolutely loved this fic and never wanted it to end. I truly wish there were more Jason and Damian Fics out there, I think it’s a character duo that isn’t explored nearly enough. If you love Damian and Jason brother bonding fics, you’ll love this one and if you’ve never read a bonding fic between these two brothers, you may just find a new love!
Five Times Jason Todd Saved His Brothers, and One Time They Saved Him by laceymcbain, reena_jenkins
Summary: “Did you know I was in here, or did you just blow up the place for fun?”
Damian didn't need to see Todd's face to know he was grinning under the helmet.
“It's not really a rescue unless something blows up. But if Bats asks, it was completely necessary."
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Word Count: 6,923
My Comments: This fic is BatFamily feels to the extreme. Jason Todd deserves love and this fic gives it to him. LOVED IT <3 <3 <3
Fly By Night by @lysical
Summary: Damian is thirteen. Sometimes he even acts like it.
"This is an injustice," were the last words Damian had spoken to his father all day.
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Word Count: 2,889
My Comments: Another great Fic by @Lysical! This is just a plain ol’ fun Fic, y’all. Great Bat Brother love in this one and it also features my sweet summer child- Jonathan Samuel Kent. Trust me you will love this Fic, it is hilarious and all around good stuff 😊
A Good Place by @lemonadegarden
Summary: Damian Wayne is kidnapped and sent back years through time. Together, he and Father – who's only been Batman for a mere six months –must figure out how to return him to his own time.
Over the course of the next week, Damian discovers that Mexican gangsters do not mess around, that social workers find Bruce annoying, that Bruce might be a little messed up, and that crystal chandeliers create the fondest memories.
Oh. And Alfred has hair.
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Word Count: 36,903
My Comments: LemonadeGarden is one of my All-Time favorite authors, so anything written by them is brilliant. But A Good Place will always be a favorite of  mine, it is by far my favorite Damian & Bruce centric Fic out there and is something I have read over and over again. I love getting to see a younger Bruce interact with Damian and in turn, Damian interact with him. It’s overall great and has a fantastic plot!
Let There Be a Bruise by @audreycritter
Summary: Damian is a child who should not have the scars he does; Bruce is a father who has plenty of his own scars, but still wishes he could take his son’s, too.
The silver lining is where they find each other— a broken son and a broken father, putting each other back together.
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Word Count: 3,656
My Comments: Audreycritter is the master of Damián & Bruce Hurt/Comfort fics. I honestly would recommend all of Audrey’s fics, so check them all out! But this one will always be a favorite 😊
 Life Happens by @cdelphiki
Summary: While walking home from an event at Wayne Enterprises, Tim and Damian are kidnapped and sent to an alternate dimension. In a world where superheroes are merely comic book characters and the idea of the multiverse is only a theory found within the pages of science fiction, how are Tim and Damian going to return home? How long will they be stranded on this strange Earth? And will the boys murder each other before they figure it out?
Rating: General Audiences
Word Count: 176,966
My Comments: Hoo-boy, folks. I don’t even know where to start with this Fic. I honestly get teary-eyed thinking about how beautiful it is and how much I loved this one. My favorite Tim Drake and Damian Wayne brotherly bonding Fic EVER. I would almost describe this Fic as a love letter to the characters Tim and Damian, in the sense that the author captures their characterizations beautifully and tells one of the best stories of growth and familial love I have ever read. It’s fluffy, angsty, humorous, and full of BatFamily feels. And don’t worry, there is plenty of Dick, Jason, and Bruce as well (If not a little later in the story). I would run to this Fic, if I were you.
Life, if Well Lived by CaptainOzone
Summary: Jason wakes up from a time-travel mishap to find Thomas and Martha Wayne hovering over him.
Just another day in the life, right?
...Not quite.
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Word Count: 10,758
My Comments: A Fic that destroyed me in the BEST way possible. Tears, so many tears were shed during this fic. The best Hurt/Comfort fic I have ever read. Extremely unique in the sense that Martha and Thomas Wayne are two of the main characters and boy did I love it! I can not stress how AMAZING this Fic is. I never knew I needed this fic in my life until I read it. I wish I could re-read it for the first time all over again. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!
My Brother’s Keeper by Forever_A_Thief
Summary: The boy had two options, two roads stretching out before him: stay with Mother, and become the greatest assassin ever known to man, or go to Father, and become a masked vigilante fighting for justice in a city drenched in darkness. Damian looked at these two roads, these two lives he could lead, and decided on a third path for himself instead. He chose his own road.
Jason never let himself think about the kid he had left behind at the desert compound all those years ago. When Talia never got in touch with him after his return to Gotham, Jason had assumed he had just been forgotten like he had been in Gotham. But then that kid, his little brother, showed up one night and Jason couldn’t just continue to push him to the back of his mind. Not anymore.
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Word Count: 43,907
My Comments: Did I mention I love Jason & Damian fics? Well I do and this one is beyond FANTASTIC. Overall great Bat-Bros fic that I would recommend over and over again.  This fic is Damian and Jason centric but it does involve the rest of the Bat Family too. I love seeing all the brother’s bonding in this fic and the overall family feels 😊
Of Owls and Assassins by Cirth
Summary: "Dick," Bruce says, not entirely sure how to react, "who is that?"
Dick blinks at him from his place on the workout mat. There's a broken plate with mac and cheese strewn all over next to him, as well as what seems to be Bruce's old G.I. Joe action figure from the attic. It looks like a child's imagining of a murder scene. "My owlet," Dick states.
Rating: General Audiences
Word Count: 853
My Comments: The adorableness of this Fic is off the charts. I love AU’s where Dick is a Talon, but this one will always hold a very special place in my heart since Dick is just so pure in it. Forever a favorite <3
Party Games by @lemonadegarden
Summary: I can't believe you got into a bar fight at two in the morning. And now you're all in prison. The night before your wedding. What the fuck kind of a family am I marrying into?” Selina said.
Bruce Wayne goes to a series of bachelor parties, each one worse than the last. Set in the same timeline as We, So Much Older, but can be read as a standalone fic as well.
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Word Count: 12,659
My Comments: Okay, so technically this is a Selina Kyle/Bruce Wayne Fic and even though the plot premise revolves around their upcoming wedding, I wouldn’t really consider this a “slash” fic. There is definitely more BatFamily vibes with this fic. It’s hilarious, fun, and oh so wholesome! I love this fic beyond measure and even if you aren’t a fan of the BatCat ship, I highly suggest you give it a shot for the amazing BatFam moments.
Second Chance by @cdelphiki
Summary: When Talia al Ghul watched her toddling son start his training, his awful, grueling training, she had an epiphany:
The League of Assassins was no place for children.
(Or: Talia realizes training literal babies is abuse and gets him out of there.)
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Word Count: 6,461
My Comments: This is the Talia al Ghul we deserve! This is the Talia al Ghul, Bruce Wayne deserves! THIS IS THE TALIA AL GHUL, DAMIAN WAYBE DESERVES! Loved this fic, great Talia al Ghul characterization. It’s the Talia that could have ben before DC slaughtered her character.
Running Headlong into My Arms by gleesquid
Summary: Bruce doesn’t like to credit one thing for saving his life, but if he did, it would be Haly’s Circus that Friday night in September, just as summer was beginning to die.
(He'll always be a sucker for kids with sad eyes, no parents, and more fight than the world knows what to do with.)
Or: in a universe where superheroes don't exist, Bruce Wayne finds his family.
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Word Count: 54,231
My Comments: I feel like this fic is a right of passage into the BatFamily fandom, so if by some chance you haven’t already read it, I highly suggest you move this straight to the top of your reading list. It’s a classic and has everything you could ever want in a BatFam Fic.
we are not alone in the dark by @audreycritter
Summary: Damian has a flashback on a family camping trip.
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Word Count: 2,218
My Comments: A BatFam camping trip, need I say more? One of my favorite hurt/comfort fics involving Damian. We get to see some super sweet moments between Bruce and Damian, and Damian and Jason. Loved it.
Where You Go, I Follow by @fishfingersandjellybabies
Summary: In some world, Dick Grayson was never revived by Lex Luthor, and was probably better for it.
Rating: General Audiences
Word Count: 1,427
My Comments: BROKE MY HEART, but in the best possible way. I cried both sad tears and happy tears for this fic. LOVED IT! I have read it at least six times (I’m going read it again after I post this rec). A fantastic Dick & Damian story. I also love the title; it captures the mood perfectly. I’m always a sucker for fics that are inspired by songs, this one was inspired by ‘I Will Follow You’ by Toulouse!
Video message incoming by helenabertinellis
Summary: The League are just wrapping up their meeting when a call comes through the Watchtower servers.
It's for Batman.
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Word Count: 1,228
My Comments: I consider this a classic BatFam fic, so I will be shocked if you haven’t read it, but on the off chance that you have not read it, GO READ IT NOW. It’s humorous and all so wholesome 😊
Yesterday’s Voices by @lemonadegarden
Summary: While trying to take down a drug cartel that deals with memory altering drugs, things go awry, and Batman wakes up with no recollection of the last five years.
As a result, his family must now race against time to find the antidote, while also having to deal with a Bruce who still thinks Jason is Robin. A Bruce who doesn't recognise most of them. A Bruce far less jaded and cynical than the one they're used to. A Bruce who still cares.
Rating: General Audiences
Word Count: 49,000
My Comments: Surprise, surprise another amazing fic by LemonadeGarden. I will be shocked if you haven’t read this fic yet, but on the off chance that you haven’t, I am telling you now, to RUN to this fic. It will forever and always be my MOST FAVORITE BATFAMILY fic out there. I honestly wish this fic never had ended, it’s one that will always hold a special spot in my heart. THIS IS THE BRUCE WAYNE WE DESERVE.

Underwater Gotham Kingdom Idea
Gotham is an underwater kingdom where dwell a number of different type of merpeople live and work. There are five types of merpeople; octopi, shark, whale, dolphin, and manta. The last two are of a more ruling class, while the former three are seen as less. Still, that doesn’t stop those like shark James Gordon from joining the royal guard, or Orca Alfred Pennyworth from being brought on as a companion for a young noble, manta Bruce Wayne. Martha Wayne was a dolphin and, due to an accident involving the stingers on his tail, Martha died giving birth to him. Thomas has always blamed himself as Bruce inherited his own manta tail instead of his beloved Martha’s dolphin tail. As such, Thomas threw himself into his work, neglecting Bruce.
After countless companions, Alfred Pennyworth is more than a match for rambunctious twelve-year-old Bruce Wayne, especially when Bruce gets a young guard as further protection. Jim and Alfred become fast friends with each other and Bruce, and the pair teach him a lot of different tricks when it comes to fighting. One day, Bruce is swimming around, when he notices a large group of octopi, sharks, and whales swimming together; a little unusual, and he’s curious enough to follow them. When he gets there, he finds a number of octopi, sharks, and whales all gathered together with shark Theo Galavan talking about over throwing their government! He’s about to swim away when he sees something that takes the wind out of his sails and he feels his heart break; Alfred and Jim are there, and they reveal themselves to be spies meant to learn the weaknesses of the palace.
Before Bruce can swim away, he’s caught by a shark named Zsasz who presents him to the group. Galavan is ready to kill Bruce, except that Bruce uses the venom in his tail to hurt Galavan enough to get away. He dodges all of the sharks, octopi, and whales who try to grab him, and uses many of the tricks he learned from Alfred and Jim to make it back to Gotham, but he just wasn’t fast enough and Galavan’s forces start their attack. Galavan finds Bruce and goes to kill him, but Thomas gets in the way, protecting his son. Between Thomas’ more mature venom and and Galavan’s sharp teeth, the two manage to kill each other. Bruce is pulled from the fray by Captain of the Guards, Nathaniel Barnes who takes Bruce to the throne room in one last effort to keep Gotham from falling into the Rebellions hands entirely. He charges shark soldier Harvey Bullock and dolphin sorcerer Lucius Fox with protecting Bruce as Bruce holds the crown jewel of Gotham; a beautiful star sapphire referred to as the Heart of Gotham. The three make their way out of the city and to the one place the Rebels can’t follow; the surface world..
As the three break through the surface, Lucius casts an ancient spell to give them human legs, but is reminded that none of them have ever swam with human legs and have trouble keeping afloat. Thankfully, a family are out on the water and see them, rescuing them. They are Jonathan and Martha Kent, with their twelve-year-old son, Clark, who takes an immediate liking to Bruce.
Five years pass, and Smallville High doesn’t know what to make of the ‘honourary cousins’, Clark Kent and Bruce Fox; on one hand, both boys are handsome jocks that are on the football team, on the other, both boys are huge dorks. Soon, however, they get something new to focus on as a number of new people have moved to Smallville; a new clothing store opened by a Jervis Tetch, whose fashion styles are geared more towards children, and Oswald Cobblepot, who makes very sharp suits for men and women.
Then, there are three new students attending Smallville High; the Valeska twins, Jerome and Jeremiah, and a student said to be a chem genius, Jonathan Crane. To top it off, they get three substitute teachers as well; Victor Fries takes over the science course, Ben Mackenzie takes over as coach for the football team, and Sean Pertwee takes over their history course. At one of the home games, Harvey, Martha, and Lucius are all cheering for their boys (Jonathan having died from cancer two years ago) when Harvey sees Coach Mackenzie, and recognizes his old partner, even through the illusion spell he and ‘Sean’ are wearing. He informs the coach he wants to talk to him later, at the bar he tends at. Saying that he thinks the two have a lot to talk about.
Ben/Jim: Hi Harvey; Oswald was a little surprised you recognized me through Ed’s glamour spell.
Harvey: Ed was always good with magic, almost as good as Lucius was before he gave it up for technology. But you should have remembered that I always had a knack for seeing through spells.
Jim: Yeah, I guess we forgot that. You look good though; the surface world actually agrees with you.
Harvey: It’s not too bad up here; at least up here I don’t have to worry about being stabbed in the back by my own species.
Jim: Harvey...
Harvey: Tell me, how many women and children died that day? I know old Thomas managed to take Galavan down with him; Bruce had nightmares for over a year thanks to him. Tell me, was Galavan supposed to kill him too, or were you going to do that? Nice and quick?
Jim, eyes flashing black and teeth sharpening: Alfred and I would never harm Bruce; you know we loved and doted on him! And Thomas wasn’t supposed to get hurt, but Galavan was insane and hated the Wayne’s.
Harvey: Unless you want people to notice something not right, I’d suggest you calm down. And yeah, I remember just how much you two loved that kid, and can’t help but notice you and the others came here just after the kid turned seventeen; courting age.
Jim: You know he belongs in Gotham.
Harvey: No, here’s what I know; Bruce had no friends and no family apart from Thomas in Gotham, here he has friends, and he and Clark are practically brothers. Lucius likes it up here too; says that human tech is a lot more fun to work with than magic. And finally, me and Martha are happy, we...
Jim: Martha?
Harvey:Clark’s mother? She and her husband Jonathan taught us all about the surface world after they rescued us that day. But Jonathan died two years ago from Cancer, and I looked after her; the two of us have been going steady for almost six months. And it’s because of that I’m willing to offer you, your fellow consorts, and the King of Gotham a deal; we give you the Heart of Gotham and you let the three of us remain here on the surface world.

Request: “batfam+Alfred reaction to batmom x batdad smut moment”
Rating: Smut/Lime
Alfred: He straight up pretends not to see. He’s a professional and let’s face it, this isn’t the first time this has happened. Realistically he probably had to deal with the same issue with Martha and Thomas so he knows how to handle it. Really at this point it would be surprising if he does see it though because he knows generally where everyone in the house is and avoids those places unless needed.
Dick: Poor baby is mortified. He’ll screech and cover his eyes and run out, slamming the door. After he calms down he’ll be slightly embarrassed but he rationalizes that it’s completely normal and healthy for them to have sex and he just represses the memory.
Barbra: The second she realizes what’s happening she’s apologizing profusely for interrupting, but on her way out adds a smart remark of, “If you don’t want to be walked in on I suggest not doing it in the batcave.”
Jason: “oh fuckin gross” and he leaves the manor immediately. No he will not bring it up to either of you but he might like rant about the horror to Kory or Roy.
Tim: Fake gags and slams the door. Distracts himself from the memory by pouring himself into his work. After a day the memory will leave him. He tells himself that it’s good that you two are still intimate though because it means you still love and have a connection with each other.
Steph: “Have fun you two! Sorry! Use protection!” She’s not phased by the situation. Really she’s more upset that she interrupted. She rationalizes that maybe if Bruce finally got laid he’d be less grumpy.
Duke: The most hilarious noise of disgust leaves his body and he does a 180 to run very far away from there. You’ll have to apologize to him later and have that awkward talk, but it’s necessary for Duke to understand you didn’t mean to have him catch you getting busy in the kitchen.
Cass: *looks into the camera like on The Office* Cass is scarred for life but she also understands she did enter your bedroom without knocking. A talk with her wouldn’t hurt, both of you apologizing for what she saw and taking precautions so it doesn’t happen again. (Like, Cass says she’ll knock and you promise you’ll lock the door when getting busy.)
Damian: Damian walking in on you means full stop sex has ended for the night. You try to cover up as best possible while Dami is standing there frozen with his jaw open. Bruce has to get up (with the bedsheet around his waist) and snap him out of it, apologizing several times. Dami is still blank faced before he blurts out with disgust, “I didn’t even know you could still get it up at your age!”
