Bakugou and Midoriya's Relationship Pre-main-cannon Analysis

Ok so I keep reading posts where people seem to think Bakugou has hard-core bullied Izuku for 10 straight years and Im here to squash that. So a kinda analysis of their relationship though the years based off what we know and all major shifts that I think happen based off cannon. As well as some inferred just based off how kids act at certain ages.

Relationship Timeline Guestimation:

This is my best guess on a timeline towards each other.

I would say the biggest guess in this is when the passive bullying actually started. Im guessing end of elementary and start of junior high just based off how kids usually are at that age (friendships shift, preteens try to be cool, purberty starts, ect.)

The biggest theme to their whole relationship is miscommunication so I labeled the timeline based off what an outside POV might label their relationship.

Preschool

Activity regular friends without Katsuki being a massive jerk. Before quirks and then Katsuki gets a big head ect. Most of that is covered extensively in flashbacks in the manga so Im gona gloss over this era.

Elementary

There's not a lot thats been shown directly at this time beyond what we've been shown in the manga (ie Izuku being nicknamed deku). So slightly inferred just based off their personalities and overall age.

Theyre actively friends but Katsuki gets worst and worst through the years and more distant. Though they actually have interations. Plus both these boys are so stubborn that I think theyed stay friendsish through elementary.

So we know they interacted and were around each other:

They were both friends at this point or at least like playmates and I think would continue through a lot of elementary especially early elementary.

Cause its not like Katsuki was popular with most people unsurprisingly:

Even if Katsuki really didnt want it, I think Izuku was one of the only friends that actively showed he cared about him. Even if he really didn't want it.

But with Katsukis insecurities and his kinda warped view of Izuku their friendship was pretty off and on again. Basically at this point in their relationship they both think the other is a slightly jerky friend but still actively care for each other. They get on each others nerves but still consider the other a friend. Also cause theyre in elementary, kids usually just play with whoever is closest and available. Since they lived in the same neiborhood and both have no sibling they would probably be first available for each other, inspite of feelings or insecurities.

Eventually though Katsukis insecurities would win out. (Which to note those really only ever come up when comparisons can come into play or when Katsuki could be precieved as needing help). And Katsuki has the same self awareness emotionally as a cat whos head is stuck in a bag. So he projects those insecurities hard onto Izuku, instead of actual self reflection.

To sum up elementary:

Early Middle School

Turning point from my guess is when Izuku tries to stand up to Katsuki and I think this is where they officially end any friendship and the bullying towards Izuku officially starts. I interpret this scene as either later elementary school or early middle school based off the lankyness of everybody:

So middle of middle school and note that Izuku isnt as actively freaked out by Katsuki approaching. So Katsuki after whenever he beat-up Izuku essentially reaffirm to himself that Izuku cant be a threat, and that he is still the best. Thus calm Katsuki at the start of Middle School. Still a jerk whenever he sees Izuku but doesnt seem to feel the need to actually seek him out. Mostly just dismissive belittling.

Plus no full on Baku-rage directed at Izuku:

Of course as anything hero related starts to come up and Izuku ends up doing his normal thing. Katsuki, like always, gets triggered cause Izuku hits every insecuritie he has.

Turning point happens when Katsuki feels threatened by Izuku again:

Thus Baku-rage is officially engaged! And series starts!

In reality, he’s just cells. He’s just proteins. He’s just protons and electrons. He is the invisible dark matter making up the weight of the universe.

The universe does not care that he’s a sixteen year old boy. The universe does not choose a god. The universe just is.

Izuku feels it like silk through his fingertips. The fabric of spacetime. A fragile, invisible thing. He knows if he touches it, this universe will cease.

But in this universe, he could not save him.

And a universe without Kacchan doesn’t have permission to exist.

He will not let it. He rejects this future.

And there’s a voice - a voice somewhere deep within. ‘Do you risk it?’

‘Do you risk destroying all of space time for one life? For one person?’

For him? He’d rip every universe to shreds. He’d tear with claws he’d bite with teeth he’d fight and bleed and break because - because for him?

He’d destroy and rebuild existence itself.

So he does.

He touches the fabric of reality, and it unfurls around him. Izuku dies, because he must, the last thought permeating his existence is -

I wasn't trying TOO hard to replicate their styles. For one, while I greatly admire semi-realistic styles, my usual style is very anime/manga-inspired, and it's hard to break those habits. Secondly, for Ellie, I'm aware that there is too much detail in Ellie's hair and there are also too many folds in her clothes XD Also, the lineweight (6.0 pt) is still too much compared to the reference picture. Nonetheless, I really like these pics!

Funny story related to your bkdk personality swap au, that I hope you'll enjoy

So, a couple weeks ago I was at a church bible study class, and we were talking about "character" (there was a passage that talked about "building character") and what exactly that meant

and someone said, "it's your personality"

And the pastor went on to talk about how personality was different than character, that personality was how one expresses themself, not necessarily a reflection of who they are

And I thought to myself "yeah yeah, I get it. It's like that bakudeku personality swap comic. They swapped personalities, but their character didnt change"

And for 2 seconds I wanted to tell the group about it, but then realized there was no way I was going to be able to explain it to this group of mostly 50-80 conservative church goers lol

And so for the rest of the study session I felt like that "guy standing in corner of the party" meme, with me thinking "they have no idea I understand the concept perfectly thanks to a little gay anime comic" lol

While I normally don't read them, the thing that really gets to me are the gender swap(specifically Izuku only) or transgender character(normally Izuku as well), and how often these traits are used a props for angst or for porn scenes. Now I am fine with transgender and nonbinary people IRL, it's something about how the subject matter is used in fiction, that negatively affects the experience. While I am aware of the fact that Japanese is beginning to open up on these idea and that MHA takes place in a future version of modern Japan, which wouldn't bat an eye at transgendered characters as we do have a canonical transmale hero with the Wild Pussycat, there's just something more off about when Izuku is the subject character.

Now I am aware that gender swapping characters are likely one of the most common tropes used and is likely one of the first of types of fics a new writer would write about. I'm wondering if it's because of the combination with Izuku being Quirkless, that it combines ableism/disability with sexism/transphobia. Now yes, these are topics that need to be talked about and fiction is a good way to experiment on the writer's knowledge on these topics, it's another thing to go to the "stay in the house" idea or to make Izuku a prop in order to praise Bakugo, since female Izuku x Bakugo(or vice versa) is a common pairing. This isn't even going into the Omegaverse, which probably has its origins based off of a combination of transgenderism, that one redacted study on wolf hierarchy(where the author redo and investigated even more), and wanting to justify MPreg.

So I’m not really going to touch the trans/non-binary fanfics because it’s not my place to talk about them. I do agree that in canon, people wouldn’t really bat an eye to a trans and/or non-binary person, but I feel that those fics are made for the author to talk about trans/non binary issues, hence why the world’s more aggressive to them in these fics. It’s them writing their own experiences through fiction if that makes any sense and I have no place to criticize what they do in those fics.

For the gender swap, I actually have a fic that co-stars a female Izuku. Why did I make Izuku female? It’s to prove a point. A lot of people shit on Izuku for being overly emotional and that he should’ve stood up to Katsuki sooner. I feel that there’s a lot of sexism around these ideas and honestly feel that if Izuku was female, then no one would really have these claims and that Katsuki would be seen in a negative light. However, I do know that a good chunk of fics that star a female Izuku are mainly porn fics and are used as a means to write a straight BkDk story which has Izuku simply exist to be a prop for Katsuki. As someone who is a shipper, I like it when my ships are mutually beneficial to both parties rather than having one person be a prop or prize for the other and agree with what you’ve said there.

my! absolute! favorite!!! by some miracle, i came across @sapphicflower-ao3 ‘s self-promo post on tumblr and decided to read the fic. it was my first bkdk fic ever! can u believe how lucky i was??? it had everything i need in life: miscommunication, hurt/comfort, super duper fluff, plus ultra pining, soft and romantic katsuki, etc. that fic literally changed my life. pls pls pls read it if u haven’t. im shaking n crying from to much emotions rn kaksmdbsjsj.

2. “what’s your type?”

another banger from my goddess rani. bkdk being on a live tv show floundering their obsession with each other for everyone to see. what’s more perfect than that? even better when they’re being absolute oblivious dumbasses while doing it. plus a romantic kiss that made me kicking my feet in glee. it’s a quick but very rewarding read. love it sm!

3. call my name, I'll come back from the dead for you

if u’ve read @atticuos ‘s works before, u can definitely pick out a very specific detail of her writing: the yearning hidden in motions. some writers choose to spell out the feelings their characters are experiencing. with el tho, those emotions radiate through the way someone talks, walks, moves their hands, or even plainly simple as their eyes softening. they’re rarely directly named. but somehow the readers can feel them 10x stronger than normal, it’s like their bones can taste the impact, too. this fic is the strongest testament of that magic. el is really a unique specimen that needs to be studied.

4. Weight of Love

the latest and gratest work of el. traveling through universes while not only reliving ur life but also rediscovering ur love. the most creative and beautiful concept ever! ever!! i’m still in awe whenever i reread this fic. like how? how could u came up with something so captivating like this?? el, i’m on the floor kissing ur feet rn.

5. Sunshine in the Rain

fluffy fluff fluff. that’s the whole fic. the amount of giddiness and happiness it contained was so sooo infectious i couldn’t help but feel like dancing in the rain, too. without too much words, micaron made it so easy for me to vividly paint a motion pictures in my head and to sway along with the characters. absolutely in love with it!

now that i have everyone’s attention :3 i’m studying fanfiction and gender and i decided to focus my final paper of bakugou and deku’s genders/femininity/masculinity, both together and apart.

i’d like to grab specific fics for close reading/taking passages from, but there’s, of course, So Many. which is where you all come in!

i’m looking for popular bkdk fics (preferably 10k+ words) that showcase how fandom views their gender. this can be in any direction! my paper is about all the different gender coding they have, so don’t worry about it being the “right” dynamic as long as the stats show it’s popular.

these can be specifically trans AU fics or tropes that play with biology like A/B/O or hybrid things, but it’s just as helpful if the coding is more subtle! gender coding can be as simple as which character is the hurt one in a hurt/comfort fic, it’s very broad.

For AUs, honestly a lot of them are spur of the moment things. Specifically IT!deku is something I came up with like 2 seconds after someone tried to scam me lmao. I was taking with a friend about it who suggested that the scammer and I should fall in love, and the bkdk gremlin that lives in my brain ran with it (The friend's also the one that came up with 'scammers to lovers')

A lot of my other AUs I do in a similar fashion to that, talking with friends about things or taking inspo from the world around me. The witch stuff was super inspired by Witch Hat Atelier! (the clothing and drapery in the manga are so breathtaking, I recommend everyone read it, it's a gorgeous series and the story is awesome)

I have a boat load more of AUs tbh, a lot of them are just me putting my favourite little guys into other series like Soul Eater, Madoka Magica,,,, Monsters Inc.

TLDR; just take whatever you see in front of you and make it bkdk (or whatever you're interested in)

As for anatomy, some of the things that really helped me are life-drawing and analyzing animation and dynamic posing!

I'd recommend anyone that wants to get better at drawing the human figure to go to a life drawing session, I have since I was like 15 lmao and it really helped with my understanding of the human figure!

Having someone real in front of you instead of photos is incredibly beneficial, but if you can't afford/don't have anywhere like that near you, there's sites online that share videos of life drawing sessions! Croquis cafe is one that I know, but I believe they only share videos through patreon now.

There's also tons of books online about figure drawing ! I've got a few posing and anatomy books of my own, I'd recommend Figure Drawing: Design and Invention by Michael Hampton (here's a pdf) as a starting place along with Morpho: Anatomy for Artists by Michel Lauricella

I also think studying from other artist's is incredibly important !! From old masters to artbooks from films to people online, everyone draws the human figure a little different and seeing how other artists have broken down and simplified the shapes and proportions of the body is super helpful ! Don't be afraid to study artists and their styles, cause it'll only serve to elevate your own !

5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?

Other than "Ao No Sumika", JJK's opening 3, I also think of "High" by Th3rdstream for SatoSugu.

I couldn't think of any song for BkDk at first, but then I thought of the song "0 (Zero)" by LMYK. It's a beautiful song and I love it so much! (It's also the ending 1 song for The Case Study of Vanitas.)
