I don't know who needs to hear this, but you should make an OC.

You should make an OC. Specifically a Spider-Sona. Like now. Preferably yesterday. [A MEDIUM-LONG essay about OC's, fanfiction, and how to enrich and better your writing skills in literally every sector. Throughout this essay I reference my two characters Disco-Spider and Inca-Spider as examples of the way OCs can be used.]

IDK about ya'll but fandom is NOT my final destination no siree

I feel like a lot of the time we get so caught up in posting and notes we forget that for many artists and writers on this platform - fanfiction is not the true end goal.

Many of us write and draw fanart for years -

But the fact of the matter is if you want to be an author someday, if you want to be a graphic novelist, an animator, etc, etc - You're going to HAVE to make OCs.

If you want to study English in college or publish books - you're gonna have to write an OC at least once. If not hundreds of times.

If you want to study art - chances are at some point you're gonna have to fill a portfolio with original pieces, including some of OCs.

If you want to do something with your writing, if you want to get better - or make a career out of your art, you HAVE to make OCs at some point.

And this is especially true for fanfiction writers.

You can get very very very good at writing in your specific fandoms, you may have the emotions of the characters on point, and the ability to describe the scenery.

But if you don't know how to create and design a character - if you don't know how to worldbuild, or come up with scenarios without the help of characterai and ChatGPT - you won't be able to write a book.

If you're an artist and you don't know how to draw an original character from scratch, how to match colors, how to draw certain skin tones, certain hair, wheelchairs and mobility aids, how to design a character from looks, to clothing - it's going to be so hard to expand your art outside of fanart. You'll always be beholden to the notes and popularity of your particular fandom.

Do it - even if you've never written or never draw before. Even better.

That's why I CHAMPION Spider-sonas so much. They're basically OCs on easy mode.

Can't write backgrounds yet? Here's a bucket on canon events to pick from? Can't draw faces? Blank mask with eyes.

Hell, if you're really really new about it - just pick a character and make a slightly different variant. Make a Hobie of your own, make a Peter variant. Make a Mary Jane variant. Pick a something you like and turn that into a character.

Can't write? Just fill-in the 'My name is [blank], I was bitten by a [blank]' script that Miles does. Can't draw, just draw out a basic shape of a body and color-out the suit, no fancy pose needed. That still counts!!

Make a self-insert. Make yourself fit into the story, design your suit, write out how you fight crime, how you'd act at the Society, meeting Miguel or Miles.

That's still character design, that's still worldbuilding.

We always hear people say 'Make art for yourself' and yeah that sounds nice - but people also misinterpret it.

Make art for yourself doesn't just mean making art that you personally like.

Making art for yourself also means making art that develops your skills even if no one gives a fuck. It's about making art as practice without the intention of it being 'completed', making OCs that never get used, drawing locations you see or writing a random ass short story then shoving it into your Google Drive forever.

Making art for yourself means making art that invests in yourself.

It means making art that interests you, challenges you, or helps you develop.

And making OC's helps develop your fanfic writing skills.

In may fandoms we begin to fall into these routine 'tropes' between characters and their personalities. This is usually known as the 'fanon' characterization.

Because when you have a set amount of characters and people, there's also a set amount of interactions and relationships between those people.

Writing OCs and having those OCs interact with canon characters allows you to dig deeper into sides of the canon characters we'd never otherwise see.

That's why I wrote Disco-Spider Diane like I do. Often, we see Hobie characterized as the chaotic, rowdy, confident type - which is perfect characterization for him. But in almost all of his interactions - he's the wilder, bolder, extroverted one. I wanted to put him in a situation where for once, he was the calmer one. I wanted to explore more grounded and chill sides of Hobie, one where he's the one grounding the other, and thinking logically - because in canon, we're hinted at a side of Hobie who's way more methodical and slow-paced and willing to stop and wait it out and play it off. And I wanted to see that. I wanted to explore what he'd do if he was faced with someone just as chaotic, who put on a cheeky ironic act - just the same as him.

Because no other characters serve that purpose in canon.

If there are elements of a character or concept you think are interesting but outright ignored by canon and fanon, you can create an OC to explore those parts.

For Disco-Spider: I wanted to explore how someone like a militant Black Panther would handle being Spider-woman, when Spider-people are usually shown as pacifists - what that would look like or how it'd shape her morals based on era, etc. For Inca-Spider: I realized there were so many culture based Spider people like Pavitr and Spider-UK. But none for indigenous communities, and NONE from countries that only existed in other universes. So, I created an indigenous character from Tawanti - a country that's located where Peru would be for us.

You can give a canon character a sibling, to explore how they'd interact with family. Give them a partner that acts totally different than their canon partner, write how that'd change the way they show love.

OC's make your original writing better, AND your fanfiction writing too. They can help you understand canon characters on a deeper level.

And sure, nobody likes your OC. NOW.

But every single character you write about, is someones OC. Every character you write about was once treated that way. Once upon a time, Dean Winchester was just some rando character in the pilot script of a show that hadn't picked up yet. Probably no one gave a fuck until CW picked it up.

The writers had to not only make him and develop him - they had to BELIEVE in him enough to pitch him to a TV show channel to make people care.

That's always the first step. Believing your character's story is worthy enough of being told and presenting it as such.

ESPECIALLY if your OC represents a demographic you don't see represented. Cause yes if there isn't any black women in canon then I'll Thanos this shit and do it myself.

Make OCs.

Write them. Draw them. Even if it's bad. Who the hell cares. Big Mouth is on Netflix with multiple seasons, have you seen that show?? 'Ugly' art is not a crime.

Make piccrews, fill out OCforms or take quiz's as them. Write little blurbs of them hanging with canon characters then post it in the tag.

You don't need a huge Spidersona sheet or a long long fic explaining their backstory. They can just be there.

MAKE OCs.

Make them to explore more in your fanfiction, make them so future you can write that novel or draw or that comic or sell those prints or whatever it is you plan to do.

Make it so your fanfiction AND original writing can grow stronger. It isn't just about notes and content and follows.

Make an OC. Make a Spidersona. Literally you have nothing to lose but your chains.

"Nobody cares-"

Oh they'll care when you pop out with that 6-book publishing deal. They'll care when you're designing big characters for movies. Cause that's how it happens. Watch.

ANYWAYSSSS if you made it this far I hope this inspired you to at least play around with the idea of OCs and Spidersonas in general.

caught up with cringetober because I literally forgot to do it, individuals and explanations under cut

Day 1: Heterochromia I’ve come to the revaluation that my sona is already cringe as hell considering not only can his entire body change color but he also has differently colored eyes as a staple of his design. They’re usually yellow and blue but this time I color picked the blue from the trans flag and the mint from the Vincian flag for this color palette, it turned out really pretty :)

Day 2: Self Insert Now she isn’t my self insert anymore, but back in the day when I was at “peak cringe” she definitely was. This is my warriors OC Icypelt and I have a post going over part of her story on my profile somewhere. She’s been through a lot and I think her modern design is very pretty :)

Day 3: Unnecessarily complex fit/design Spider scene is kinda infamous in my brain for having wayyy too much detail but I love them and I think this might be my favorite one out of this batch, super cute, the pose is really cute and the colors are nice and fits her really well :D

day 4: Angel x Devil inevitable MCR reference ik, Helena and Revenge, love them dearly. Poor revenge man this one is cute and looks like a sticker!!

Day 6 (I skipped day 5 because I didn’t want to open up ms paint today): neko i kinda hate this one but cat Gerard yay

Day 7: Pinterest base at first I wanted to draw hobie in place of Gwen but I remembered that I haven’t really drawn Mikey with her even though they’re supposed to be friends so I drew her instead. Idk. The height difference is not accurate because of that but Jumping Spider is small because he’s based on a jumping spider and those are tiny who would have thought

Day 8: tumblr sexyman i have never played undertale a day in my life i just know a lot of people wanted to jump sans’ bones

day 9: Crossover ship/rarepair OH BOY THIS ONE GOES KIND OF HARD AND IM EMBARRASSED ABOUT IT BECAUSE THEY KIND OF WORK FOR EACH OTHER UM MIGUEL OHARA X CLOTTED CREAM COOKIE IM INSANE OMG-

day 10: fursona i already have a fursona I already drew and yes I colorpicked from the lesbian flag how could you tell /j

Day 11: Yandere LYLA is technically canonically a yandere because spoiler alert she tried to kill Miguel’s fiancé via overheating her in the shower (essentially literally boiling her like a lobster) because she was “in love” with him (she said if she did have autonomy and had feelings the would be in love with him but she doesn’t but idk who knows I don’t).

day 12: niche interest ik MCR isn’t exactly “niche” but the black parades story in particular has always caught my interest and I have my own interpretation of it and a whole kind of story I’m still developing and character arcs and headcanons and interactions and yeah you get it, death in particular has evolved into god knows an OC on his own I just keep him attached to MCR because… it makes more sense that way, ig-

day 13: creepypasta does this count- whatever grimdark is just the same thing as a creepypasta- I’m not really in the MLP fandom anymore but it was my first ever “fandom” I was actually apart of. My first hyperfixation if you will. I wasn’t in the grimdark part of the fandom because I was too young for it but I was actually watching the izzzyzzz grimdark video and I was like “oh” and drew a rainbow factory Rainbowdash. Honestly I should draw ponies more they’re fun to draw

Day 14: candygore (?) im not good at drawing candygore and since I was rushing this o didn’t do it as well as I thought I can, but it still turned out pretty cool

Day 15: song lyrics aaaa inevitable hesitant alien drawing this one turned out so cute!! The colors and the sparkle eek so cute aaa action cat lyrics I’m breaking down right in front of you I’m sorry

planning on doing the rest of the month now, maybe not exactly on time since I’m still in school but I’ll try to get 31 drawings out by Halloween. Love the idea of cringetober because I just love all things cringe. Ack this is so good

Kicking my feet and twirling my hair, I'm gonna ramble about my spider sona's because they are rattling in my brain and I love them to bits >:)

Also just saying, I compiled a fuck ton of images of them into shitty collages because I have no motivation to make perfect reference sheets of them. Shitty collages too BC I did it on my phone and can't do graphic design for the life of me :')

ANYWAYS ONTO THE RAMBLE (under the cut for those who literally don't care and wanna scroll past LOL)

Funnelweb also known as Shadow Spider or Aaron Watson

A 20 year old trans demi-boy lad who had the Miles Morales treatment and was bitten by accident by an other-worldly spider.

When he was younger, Aaron was close with his sister. She was all that he had after their parents had died, and even though they had Aunt May and Uncle Ben, Aaron wasn't close with the two. He stuck by his sister through thick and thin until the day that'd change his life forever.

One fateful evening, he had lost his sister when they were caught between the Spiderman of Aaron's world fighting one of his usual enemies. Grief stricken, Aaron held malice and resentment toward Spiderman and felt utterly cursed when he got the Miles Morales treatment and was bitten by accident by another spider from another world.

With this new found power, Aaron took it upon himself to be a counterpart to Spiderman, titling himself Funnelweb to differentiate himself from the man he despised.

He became basically Batman to Spiderman's Superman.

Facts and little extra info

- Funnelwebs main power is electricity. It causes him to be much quicker then Spiderman and sometimes it trails behind him.

If channeled properly, he can use it as a weapon, but it takes alot of focus and patience.

- He uses a skateboard to help him get around and fight!

I had the idea of a skateboard because of a character named Beat from The Wold Ends With You using a skateboard both for battle in the first game, and to get around quickly in the second >:3

- He doesn't have natural webs, so he has custom web slingers built into his spiked wristbands.

- Everything in Funnelwebs world is Punk/Emo. Even the enemies lol and even Spiderman. I should really design him.

-Even though I put his face in the collage, in Funnelwebs world, only blues and reds are highlighted, and he's always obscured in shadow.

He does look like the portrait when in other worlds.

- It's not clear what year Funnelweb is supposed to be in, but it is a hybrid of 2000's with futuristic elements but still feels incredibly grunge and punk/emo.

- Technically Funnelweb, if we count Miguel's canon event thing, is his world's "MJ", however he changed his name after coming out and doesn't believe in the fate that usual MJ's succumb to.

However, he can't help but wonder if loosing his sister and becoming a second Spiderman was the canon event he dreaded, being intertwined with Spiderman's fate even though not romantically involved.

Retro-Spider also known as Peter Parker or Lachlan Parker.

A 20 year old arts major who was bitten by a spider of unknown origins. He is his world's one and only Spiderman.

Peter- preferring Lachlan- hadn't been Spiderman for very long before things took a turn for the worst.

His worlds Uncle Ben, rather Uncle Lachlan, died mysteriously and suddenly, leaving Peter in immense grief.

When Peter joined the spider society, he adopted the name Lachlan, both to pay respects to his uncle and to differentiate himself from all the other Peters as he felt intense imposter syndrome when he talked to every Peter.

Eventually, Lachlan gained a watch to traverse world's and had the time of his life just pushing random buttons and jumping through portals to see what was on the other side, but he knew the next world he'd jump into was important because that's when he met Aaron.

Facts and little extra info

- Lachy was originally gonna have a blue, red and white suit but he looked too much like Pepsi man 💀 The portrait with the turtleneck was the only thing to survive from that original concept.

- His world is coloured like retro anime. I'm not good at all at drawing old anime but imagine everything is anime-esc and the world around him looks like what you'd see on Pinterest if you searched up like, retro anime city.

- His world is basically the 80's.

- His powers are pretty basic, however, he has organic webs!!! His webs are like layers of extremely thin webs joined together and give his webbing a shimmer and holographic effect.

- His suit is holographic >:3

- Later down the line, Lachy becomes intertwined with a Symbiote. The lore is still a Wip.

- Lachy's own world MJ is like a best friend to him. He has no romantic feelings whatsoever.

- He is Pan! However, he keeps it a secret because the 80's were relentless if you weren't in a heteronormative ideal, and he already got bullied for his love of art :')

- His walkman is his baby. It was a gift from his uncle and he never goes anywhere without it (Star lord style babyyy)

( For example, Miguel’s webbing being red and presumably digital. ): Asa has completely organic webbing, that varies in strength depending on what he needs in the moment

Very important question here- do they have any pets? And if so, do they ever take them out on their crime fighting missions?: Do his daughters count? I’m joking but he only has time for his daughters right now

Are they the only Spider-Person in their universe? ( For example, Miles and Peter co-existing in the Insomniac Games ): No, and he likes it that way. Asa is an anarchist but he does not share well

Are there things that exist in their universe but don’t in others? ( For example, Comic Con existing in Miles-42’s universe but not in 1610 Miles’s! Or certain Marvel superheroes existing in their universe but not others. ): Something that only exists in his universe is the cold wat between america and Mexico. (in his universe Mexico grew into a powerhouse after world war two and well check out this post for more)

And lastly ( For now will probably make a few more of these… honestly I could make one daily but I don’t wanna bother people lol ) what does your Spider-Sona think about killing criminals… and their general approach to crime: He fights for the little guy and sometimes that means killing cops or corrupt government officials

big long rant incoming

my tumblr account is dying.

theres no other way to put that and I do say it in full honesty and non sugarcoated.

for the past few months I have had no drawings I could possibly upload on this site.

my drawings have either been super personal for me or gifts for other people and I felt like it wasn’t good enough for me or for my 60+ followers

I feel like I’ve lost the reason for being here.

this was supposed to be my main platform for uploading cool art I make.

unfortunately I’ve put that off for so long that I don’t believe i have an actual audience anymore.

I haven’t gained any new followers, I haven’t had as much traction as I used to and it sometimes takes a toll on my mental health.

I am aware that not everything is for the numbers but when I put effort into something that I genuinely enjoy and feel proud of and want other people to see, they don’t.

when I first started out I was a kris dreemurr deltarune based blog, which is why my name has persisted and never changed.

once I felt the disconnect between me, the character and the game I discovered other passions and wanted to draw something that wasn’t the same character over and over.

not bashing anybody who does, I have followers from my deltarune days who still do, but I feel like when I stopped doing the same thing over and over, when I stopped doing my act, I stopped being relevant.

I had lost whatever spark gave me those 200+ notes or 100+ notes.

I’ve noticed it for a while and felt like whatever I posted wasn’t going to do as many numbers as it did back then, I felt like nobody cared about my account once I stopped being a shell for kris dreemurr fans.

I am more proud if my work than I have ever been, and I know that even if something doesn’t do as well, I know that I did well.

I feel like once I went and did my own thing with OC’s and my sona art I had lost my audience that tuned in for any new kris post.

everyday I open tumblr and I know that my follower count hasn’t grown, I know the numbers aren’t doing well and I am very aware it has also been my fault for not posting often and i take full responsibility for that.

I want those same people who followed me from my deltarune content to see how I’m doing now, what I upload now.

my only question, is, where did you guys go?

why did my audience suddenly turn their backs on me when I wanted to branch out, when I started to do spider-verse and homestuck and original content that wasn’t a repeat of the same character for the 100th time?

if someone follows me for my art and me as a person, then they would like and reblog any thing I choose to upload regardless of fandom or OC or whatever my medium might be.

I will better myself and try to upload here more consistently, I’ve put this site off because I’ve made a lot of cool online friends that support me in whatever I choose to put out.

I’ve gotten too comfortable not being here for too long.

words can’t end my thoughts but I will conclude here.

all I want is to have an audience who enjoys what I put out regardless of what it is. I don’t want cheap cashgrabby notes by being a cow for a fandom. I don’t want to be known as “the kris guy” anymore. I want to be known as my online alias where someone could look at it and be like “that’s kr1zp and they make art, he’s cool.” I want to be KR1ZP full time and I will better myself to see the chance I want to see.

Fav color: hm I don't think I really have one? I like shades of purple and blue, and warm colors like orange, and natural/muted colors in general

Last movie/tv show: Spider-Man: No Way Home with Tom Holland. Was somehow not as good as I remember, I feel like I'm falling out of love with the mcu. The actors did an amazing job tho, I cried at May's death even though I don't like her in the mcu

Sweet, spicy, or savory: Savory over Sweet anytime, I'm choosing chips over chocolate. I don't get along too well with spicy food (I'm too white lmao)

Anyway the movie was really good! I forgot spiderman is marvel though 😬 but I used my movie credit so I didn't pay for it. Still though...

Anyway really liked it, really liked the casting and story. Didn't end the way I thought it would tbh. I'll put my spoilers under the cut. Sat second farthest row back bc getting snacks took so long that the end seats were already taken in the row I picked and I didnt wanna make someone get up especially when the theater was so sparsely filled anyway like it's not REALLY assigned seating (unless you order stuff to your seat)

But! I could see the screen a lot better and I didn't need my ear plugs even with it being a loud action movie so that's a plus! Fun little trip all around :)

AND Tarot looks really fucking good even if I haaaate horror movies. Like the premise that whatever card you picked is responsible for your death (I think that's it, I'll have to look it up) is really cool (couldnt help but think of stardust crusaders 😅 I'm like 👀 what does the Hierophant do? 👀 like we saw the hermit, the high priestess, the hanged man (kinda??) Like what else... let me see without watching the whole movie and being paranoid for a week like horror always makes me 😭) anyway I think it's the first 12 cards and 13, death, was the last one tying their fate I THINK. Anyway idk if I'll see that 😬 but it's funny bc I remember when Ouija came out I tried to convince my friends to skip school with me and go see it but no ones parents would let them call out sick but mine sgdggdgd my mom was like whatever just let me know if your friends take you to the movies (they did not.) Anyway I picked that bc it looked cool and they liked horror, and I think this is the same "franchise" same director

So it's a prequel to spiderman! I didn't know that! We got to see Uncle Ben becoming Uncle Ben, and he didn't just have like a short cameo like he was apart of the story which was cool, I liked that.

The "hints" that theres gonna be more involving her and the girls looks cool. Maybe I'll see em when marvel stops being shitty fuckers. (So likely online... for free. (; )

I wish Ezekiel didn't die in the end (he's super super dead lol) bc he was a cool villain! I really liked his character and he had a lot of potential! I wonder if that's gonna play a part in the upcoming series, like if he's somehow alive again (probably not). I might look up free scans of the comics later bc I really like Julia, shes so cute agdgdgd I mean I like them all but I like Julia's spider-sona the best

I liked the overall idea and plot, though the Las Arachas (I think that's how you spell it) scared the fucking shit out of me sgdgdgdggdgd I was like oh that's a cool legend, wonder if it's real. Have to look that up later. OH SHIT

Also glad they didn't kill the mom, I thought they did bc they didnt even like move Cassie closer when her mom was reaching for her??? Hello??? Asshole??

Also shout out to customer who called in the girl's sighting, even though it led Ezekiel to them, way to not be a bystander 🤙

Also nitpicky thing but I wish Cassie had given the girls a count when she taught them CPR, I remember we needed to count (1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4... or something) over and over when we learned it, or tell them to use the beat of Staying Alive (could've easily gotten the rights... then make a joke ab them not knowing that song bc haha Cassie old)

Mainly just wish they didnt kill him, like that would have been such a good "oh I'll be back. Just you wait" type villian! I mean I get it, he would stop at nothing to kill em but like come ooon

Does it count as a Spider-Sona if it's literally just me in my actual Spidey suit that I own irl? Probably not, no. But I was inspired by all the Spider-Sonas that people have been making post-atsv, so I made this. Got a bit lazy and didn't add webs to the suit, but the webs on my real suit don't tend to show up on camera anyway, so I think that's fine.

Such as being a; Communication device, controlling machines around their underground lab facility, a key, storage device, teleporter, AI system, and it's actually use from the show lol -The characters that Diamond most commonly interacts with are: "The Tentacle Arms" (which he can actually remove and reattach, when not in use they just sit on this fancy pedestal thing, hooked up to the facility's main frame so they don't get bored, GhostFreak who is a rather reluctant hire, Carnage who is just happy to be along for the ride, and the Omnitrix which actually has an essential AI system installed on it. -In regards to Diamond's abilities, he essentially travels to point in time where villains get defeated, pauses time, and says "Hey look you're about to be the captain that goes down with the ship but I can offer you an essential redemption opportunity, but yah gotta work with me, and trust me I'm literally someone you can't backstab, like it's actually physically impossible, but hey I'm your ticket out of here, your choice!
