This was one of my favorite portfolio projects I did during my internship this summer on the Firaxis games concept team!
It was really fun bc the actual flight school of the Wright brothers was quite basic looking irl. So I had to come up with all sorts of ways to give it personality and charm plus make it look really lived in

Marvel’s Midnight Suns - the superhero strategy game I never knew I needed
Tumblr media
I wasn’t sure I’d like playing Midnight Suns, as I’d never been interested in the whole “deck-building turn-based-strategy” schtick, but over 130 hours later I’m wishing I’d played it from day one. Developed by Firaxis Games (the team behind XCOM) and released in December 2022, Midnight Suns is the latest addition to the Marvel gaming library. An adaptation of the comics team known as the Midnight Sons, the game focuses on the lesser-seen mystical and supernatural side of Marvel. It’s also the first Marvel game that allows the player to create their own protagonist; dubbed The Hunter, this entirely original character serves as the player’s avatar throughout the game as they battle the evil demonic Lilith (who also happens to be the Hunter’s mother). As Lilith spreads her demonic influence across Earth, it’s up to the Midnight Suns, their allies in the Avengers, and the newly-resurrected Hunter to stop her at all costs.
Tumblr media
GAMEPLAY    The game wastes no time in throwing you into the action, teaching you the basic mechanics in a quick and intuitive way. As the game progresses, the sheer amount of different tricks and mechanics you’ll need to master might seem intimidating, but you’d be surprised at how quickly it becomes like second nature. With new heroes, cards, enemies, hazards and mission types constantly being introduced over time, the game feels fresh and engaging for the entire playthrough without outpacing the player. Between missions, the player controls the Hunter as you explore the Abbey, the makeshift home base of the Midnight Suns. Exploring the Abbey grounds and hanging out with the heroes is a “love it or hate it” situation; while some might feel it drags down the action, I personally love it as it fleshes out the characters and expands the lore of the game. The game will definitely take a strong PC to run at high settings - you might run into some strange visual bugs and the odd crash here and there, plus some framerate issues in the Abbey when the two-dozen or so heroes all hang out in the same place. I’ve experienced few, if any, performance issues within the actual missions, and the occasional bugs I’ve run into do nothing to dampen my enjoyment of the game.
Tumblr media
WRITING    The game’s writing is definitely its biggest strength. The characters are excellently written, with a good mix of humour and seriousness that fit perfectly with each characters’ distinct personality. The story campaign takes much longer than I expected but never felt like a drag, with plenty of exciting twists that caught me by surprise in the best way. While some of the voices can take a little getting used to, especially if you’re more acquainted with the film versions of the characters, the actual performances are top-notch. Every quote out of the characters’ mouths, from story cutscenes to dialogue interactions to even the random one-liners in the midst of combat are both written and voiced near-flawlessly; even generic HYDRA troopers get hilariously terrified as the heroes whittle their numbers down in battle. There’s also plenty of familiar voices in the game that long-time fans will be happy to hear again, like Yuri Lowenthal as Spider-Man and Steve Blum as Wolverine. The golden combination of top-tier voice acting, exciting writing and engaging gameplay is rare, but Midnight Suns has more than proven itself in those regards.
Tumblr media
GRAPHICS & AUDIO    While not quite as high-grade as the game’s other aspects, the overall graphical quality is still fairly good, save for a handful of lighting and texture bugs that keep cropping up. Some of the characters’ facial models are a tad off, especially if you aren’t playing at the highest possible graphics settings. However, the animations in combat and during cutscenes are superb; every single blow landed by either the heroes or villains has loads of impact to it with perfectly-paced slow-motion that really sells the sheer superhuman strength everyone seems to have. Virtually every card you play is accompanied by a unique animation with cinematic camera angles, turning the otherwise-straightforward card game into a grand blockbuster battle straight out of a movie. The music is often overpowered by all the explosive action sound effects of combat, but taking a moment to really listen to the soundtrack reveals just how awesome it actually is. The battle music is tense and exciting, the boss fight music is heavy and foreboding, and even the main menu soundtrack will get you pumped up before you even hit Continue Game.
Tumblr media
ENJOYMENT    Simply put, Marvel’s Midnight Suns is downright addicting. Not the “guilts the player for not logging in every day” kind of addicting, but the “game is just that fun” kind. I’m not even much for turn-based strategies or card games, having bought this game because I’m a Marvel fan and wanted to give it a go. I was pleasantly surprised by how fun I found the gameplay, and the story had me hooked from the beginning. There’s nothing more satisfying than getting just the right combo of cards to clear out the entire enemy team before they’ve even had their first turn; it turns out the Hulk is really powerful. Who knew? As I mentioned earlier, I personally loved the in-between-mission moments of hanging out with the other heroes in the Abbey, exploring the lore and worldbuilding of this particular Marvel universe. I’m really looking forward to the future of this game - there’s still more DLC planned, and I’m hopeful for plenty of extra heroes and missions. Fingers crossed for a sequel!
Reblogs and likes are appreciated, and thanks for reading!

Midnight Suns Wish List
I've been playing Marvel's Midnight Suns for the last few weeks (no spoilers, still haven't finished it yet), and I'm super enjoying the game. I know we're probably not going to get any more characters after the current batch of DLC is out, but I have some characters I'd LOVE to meet/play as, and I want to put them somewhere, so here they are.
Dane Whitman - the Black Knight
Tumblr media
Mostly because the color palette would fit right in, but Whitman's connection to Arthurian Legend (most notably, his sword, forged by Merlin himself) would make him a perfect thematic fit with the more mystical aspects of Midnight Suns. Plus, the man's struggle with his Ebony Blade gives him a lot of narrative significance in the story. Maybe Midnight Suns could see him finally overcome his old arch-nemesis, the Bloodwraith.
Lorna Dane - Polaris
Tumblr media
Yeah, two Danes. Weird, I know. But Polaris is so much more; as the secret third child of Magneto, she has a similar magnet-themed powerset, giving her a unique toolkit we don't see elsewhere in the game. Polaris' status as Wanda's half-sister and occasional X-Men ally would make her a natural fit (although I could also see her in a more antagonistic role, a la Johnny Blaze).
Pietro Maximoff - Quicksilver
Tumblr media
And while we're on the subject of Wanda's siblings, I'm not sure if Pietro's still alive in Midnight Suns canon, but if he is, it's really strange to me how we never actually see him. Pietro and Wanda are really close, and I think a super-speedster like him has a lot of room for creative design. I'm envisioning a suite of Quick cards that let him perform crazy combos every turn.
Jean Grey - Phoenix
Tumblr media
Midnight Suns deals a lot with characters struggling with their dark side. Dane Whitman up above has a lot of that, but there's no way we can't discuss the queen of "struggling with your evil impulses" herself, Jean Grey! The Phoenix can be a powerful ally and an even more powerful enemy, her psychic powers an imposing threat even to master telepaths like Charles Xavier.
Viktor Von Doom - Dr. Doom
Tumblr media
Screw it, let's get ALL the green people in here! Dr. Doom is a natural fit for the melding of science and magic prevalent in Midnight Suns; his dynamic with Dr. Strange and Tony Stark would doubtless be hilarious as three brilliant and egotistical men butt heads, and he's already gotten a few name drops in the game, like a book authored by him and a mention in Deadpool's side story! Plus, I just really like him, okay?
Emma Frost - the White Queen
Tumblr media
And as long as we're talking villains, who better than the matriarch of the Hellfire Club herself, the White Queen? Emma Frost might have a little too much overlap with Jean Grey for both of them to make it in, but I couldn't not put the living manifestation of "gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss" on this list now, could I? And anyway, it's not like there's no overlap in power sets elsewhere in Midnight Suns, what with all the magic-users around. Emma Frost has a lot to offer from a narrative standpoint, too much to be overlooked in my opinion.
And that's about it! Feel free to join in with your own hopes for inclusion in the game (or perhaps a potential sequel)! Or else just yell at me for the sexist pics. I swear, I tried to find the ones that framed the women in the best light, they're just all Like That.

yeah, I'm sorry, now's not a great time for me, but next time. Next time, I promise. The next time you discount Marvel's Midnight Suns by 50%, I'll buy it. Yeah, no, the reviews look great. PC Gamer gave it a ... a what, an 88/100? That sounds, yeah, that sounds really good. It's just that now's not a great time for me. But no, if you discount your big game by 50% at least one more time before the one-year anniversary of its release, I promise I'll buy it next time. For real. Just one more discount.

Game 241 - XCOM 2 by Firaxis Games
Tumblr media
What did I think it was at first? I've played XCOM: Enemy Unknown before, but wasn't able to beat it. I know to expect an alien takeover, base management, and tactical combat.
How was the character creator? It’s considerably stepped up from what I remember in the original game. I remember being able to change colors on my soldiers and do some basic customization, however, the customization on soldiers now are very detailed. They can come from many backgrounds, and you can even turn in the option for some of them to speak the language that matches their heritage. I ended up with a badass squad of ladies who were highly trained soldiers - and they all felt different and had their own personalities. Even my English speakers responded to commands differently and had their own attitudes.
Tumblr media
How was the game? It felt very similar to the first game, but if it isn’t broken there’s no need to fix it.
I had the best time when I was thrust into combat with the alien hordes and got to command my units. The tactical turn based RPG gun fighting was a little easier this time around, and I was able to be much more successful than my original outings with XCOM. The maps and enemy squads seem to have some amount of random generation. My favorite mission was when I got to control all of my little dudes at once.
When you’re running combats, everything feels very high stakes even though they are slow. One wrong move can wipe out your whole squad, so I used a technique I learned in the original XCOM which is to save scum early and often. I found myself very attached to my crew and as they became more capable I would more readily steamroll combats. The difficulty was definitely more consistent here than in the other game.
It’s also a fair amount prettier, though I felt bad that my computer chugged a little on a 2016 game. I ran the game in medium with some modifications.
Tumblr media
What did I not love? I didn’t mind the base management in the previous game, but I didn’t like it at all in this one. The characters have good personalities, but I felt like the objectives were a little unclear and it was harder to figure out the mechanics. The actual pacing chugged and there were some points where I really couldn’t figure out my next missions. I get that the Avatar Project timetable is meant to encourage urgency, but it felt like I couldn’t really establish my soldiers or base under its threat.
I’m not sure if this part is because I ran the game off an external time, but my loading times and combats also felt very slow? There’s a lot of tension in the exacting firefight missions, but then you sit idle waiting for assets to load or to proceed between parts of the game. I ended up not finishing it just because the pacing wasn’t great on that end - I could do like 2 fights a night before I felt myself sleepy and dragging.
Tumblr media
At 17 hours and $14.99, was it really worth it? I think that as much as I want to like XCOM, it’s just not for me. The fights are cool though! If you would like a grittier realistic alien based Fire Emblem you might like this.

I like Marvel's Midnight Suns. I think for the most part it looks good and is a lot of fun. However the faces of certain character just don't look right. Not in a "This doesn't look like Peter Parker from the movies or other videogames" but it a "this is not an accurate representation of a human face." Parker is so far the worse of the bunch. Seriously, look at him. He looks more like Odo from Star Trek Deep Space 9.
