idk man i just really think that if u genuinely believe that fic authors are required to care about characters they dont care about and make content for characters or ships they dont care about just to prove theyre not secretly misogynists uh. i dont think you actually care about how theyre actually treating real women. because you seem to be using solely the characters they choose to write self-indulgent free fanworks about as the metric to define that instead of, yknow. anything else they do. or at least youre putting a whole lot of emphasis on it

also theres quite a few lesbians ive met who actually dont write men. some even genderbend, whether thru a cis-swap where theyre now AFAB cis women or thru trans headcanons or whatever, canonically male characters so they dont have to write about men. theyre a minority in most animanga and other mainstream fandoms ive seen but as i am not in every fandom nor am i privy to the inner workings of every fandom idk how like, rare those ppl actually are compared to authors who exclusively or mostly write abt men

also like. not sorry for this one, but as a nonbinary trans man who is not a woman even a little bit and refuses to be seen as one or associate myself with womanhood because i am not a woman, it is specifically irritating to me to be told this, because i tend to write most about the characters i project on to or see myself reflected in, and, unsurprisingly, 99% of those characters are men, or can be read as men or are men at least some of the time, or more masculine in presentation

jasper from SU has always been my favorite gem and i didn't get invested in the series until she showed up, for example, and i heavily project onto her and see my experiences in her, despite her being considered woman-aligned, which i have no problem with and am actually glad about because there's not a whole lot of very masculine/butch women in mainstream media to start with, though i wish the show had been more sympathetic with her considering she's literally an abuse victim but i digress

but i often don't write for female or fem-presenting canon characters, or focus many of my fics on them, because in order for me to really get attached to a pre-existing character not of my own creation in a series, i need to be able to see some aspect of myself in them, or they need to have something that makes me interested in their story and draws me towards them. but seeing myself reflected in a character who is a woman or identifies mostly or often as a woman is dysphoria-inducing for me. that's why most of the female characters i write for are my own OCs, because i created them, which means a little piece of me goes into them, which means i'm able to have that connection i often lack with canon characters. i also tend to make the most content for characters i feel attracted towards, who are always men because i'm gay lmao

like i'm not misogynistic or a misogynist. i don't hate women. it's just that between my writing process and the canon characters my brain gets attached to, when i write fic, i write about the canon characters i care about the most, who most often tend to be men because i'm mostly in fandoms of male character-dominated series where the women are either uninteresting, poorly written, or extremely minor, or all three in the worst case scenario. and since i do this for fun, i'm not gonna waste my time writing something i'm not 100% passionate about just because there's a lack of f/f and women-centric content like

that's a problem! but it's a problem that can be just as easily fixed by the people who are demanding more content themselves if they, yknow, actually made some. which a lot of them don't

omg this is serious loree. so ive been reading ff for a good few years and so do two of my irl friends (the only ppl who know i read ff in this day and age irl) and we were all in the harry potter fandom. then we were like, we should make our own JOKE fanfic, and we're were like planning it all out for fun w y/n and shit and then we actually wrote it😭 it has four chapters and it's on wattpad but it's the most insane cliché shit and probably the funniest thing I've ever done LMFAOO

and then months and months after that i tried to do my own little things but they were all terrible. but then jan 2023 i started like seriously writing. the first proper fic (multichap) i tried to do kinda crashed and burned and the other ones never made it past a few thousand words. the writing was good i just dk how to make a story😭 anyway then in september i wrote a full hp one shot even though im not in the fandom anymore?? tried to reform my multichap and wrote a few more chapters then was like wait, this still isn't working (for plot reasons).

writing is hard but rn im working on a clyde biography which is easy enough bc it's it's basically just all my head cannons❤️

i picked mardytoast bc my friend, who knows i read ff has a cat called melba, and she was talking to me one time and she was like oh it's melba as in melba toast and i was like oh okayy

so when i was making my user i used that but obviously im not stealing her cats name so i chose some other word that started with m

thoughts about my oc/canon stuff under the cut.

so. aurellio and refa. aurellio was essentially born as a joke, saying "what if i made a centauri oc lmfao" and also, "what if, as a parallel to londo and adira, refa had his own dancer in a pre-canon timeline back home on centauri prime and they were both boys!" since yknow. refa is such an effective foil to londo i figured it would be a fun, kinda cute idea.

i also think it does narratively fit in well with b5. take londo, who isnt the best example but we see him commit all these horrible acts but we know about his love for adira, before we even see him start to reform or even start to really commit atrocities we know he has a heart. we find this out in the third episode. spectacularly done.

a better example of this would actually be bester, one of my other absolute favorite side villains. bester was never redeemed. bester, however, is given opportunities for the audience to see his heart. irt his family, his expectant lover, and his somewhat emotional reactions to the telepaths dying in season 5, though caused by him. we still hate him, he never gets redeemed, his love for the people in his life does still exist and doesnt excuse or justify his actions. it gives him a lot of depth that i also really enjoyed!

that is kind of what i'm trying to do with refa. aurellio is a late 20 something year old centauri who is majorly unaware of what refa is doing or does or will do in relation to his schemes to rise to power. i also think that in this pre-canon timeline (around 2253-2257) is when refa is doing little things to slowly climb to where we see him in the show. he always had a lot of power being the lord of his house so he didnt need to do much, but i think the ten or so years leading up to his appearance in the show was a slow, hands-off rise to power. so aurellio, who has no real relation to House Refa aside from being a patron, isnt involved or knowledgeable about house refa's politics.

i would get into the "refa is a good family man" headcanon i have but tldr: celes was his last wife because he chose her. he chose her because he genuinely loved her and he chose to have senna. his other wives and his other children operate moreso like londos wives and him did where there was no love and only obligation. so senna and celes get favored. senna cared enough about her father to throw rocks at londos head years later about it, so i think that they did have a good relationship. refa spoiled her, would do anything for her, which was strange for a noble centauri man to be so obsessed with his youngest daughter. maybe he knew she was always destined for greatness. weh. and well, when this baby is like "dad, i wanna be a ballerina" like most 3 year old girls want to be, he says "of course my love, let me find you the best teacher possible": enter aurellio. who he chooses. who senna also chooses.

so yknow. refa gets a boy toy as a treat. aurellio is almost a part of his family as a treat. they kinda sorta love each other, as a treat, and it also works with aurellio's unconventional relationships he has with his lesbian wife bestie and her twin, the actual love of his life. so like yay centauri polyamory.

i just feel like sometimes i have to justify doing what i'm doing with my oc/canon stuff bc 1. it's refa🤢 and 2. ive been in fandoms before that were hostile to me about liking villains And trying to expand on them and make them more than what the show gives us. im VERY satisfied with refa's character in the show. these headcanons arent filling a void that was missing because i dont think they needed to be expanded on in canon, i just like refa/the centauri/my centauri oc and expanding on centauri lore is fun. so 🤷‍♂️

TLDR answer: trigun 98 -> badlands rumble -> trigun manga -> trigun stampede. going into why below. (under readmore bc this accidentally got long. again.)

ok well. common consensus is to watch the original anime (referred to as trigun 98 by much of the fandom) bc it has a slower start & lets you get to know the characters a lot more than the new anime (assisted by the 26 episodes length, as opposed to 12). it preserves the Mystery of what Vash's deal is for much longer, & is in general pretty entertaining to watch if you don't know wtf is going on. it's Legally on uh. crunchyroll? i think? tho i watched it here: https://aniwatch.to/trigun-266. just like. normal sketchy site safety, adblock is ur best friend, don't click on things. etc. if this site doesnt work for u then u could always google another.

there's a movie, Badlands Rumble, which is based off the trigun 98 canon, so probably a good place to watch it is right after that. just uh. be mindful that Vash's behavior is a Lil... obnoxious at points lol. but it's still a fun movie overall with plenty of good shit in it, so it's worth watching still. i watched it w/ a friend streaming it so i dont have a link onhand, but u could probs find it thru that same site if u search for it.

NEXT UP is my personal favorite, the manga. theres trigun original and trigun maximum, which is the direct continuation of the original (there was an issue with the publishers and licensing so upon continuing the manga w/ a different publisher, Nightow had to rebrand it. it's otherwise the same manga). i recommend this one next bc it's the most whole of story & goes deeper into things than the original anime, but it's also what the new anime is based on (aka why i recommend this one first). it can get FUCKED UP (they all can really, but trimax Especially) so probably look up a triggers list if u think u might need it. it's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO fucking good tho. genuinely owns my soul. i was a different person after reading it (not rly better or worse, mostly just more insane). there r a few translations online - an old fan translation (DO NOT TOUCH, full of horrid translations and insertions of bigotry that arent in the original), the official Dark Horse translation (an... ok translation, though it has plenty of errors and confusing translations. it's what i first read so it's Okay, but not the best), AND the trigun manga Overhaul project, which u can find on tumblr. this one's the best one bc it's lovingly translated and a LOT more accurately done. i swear things that were so confusing at first are So Clear reading this one. u can find the masterpost Here: https://trigun-manga-overhaul.tumblr.com/post/701392615591034880/trigun-ultimate-overhaul-masterpost-heres-all-the. or just go to their blog @/trigun-manga-overhaul. just trust me on this it's where U wanna read.

an offshoot of it (and what ive been reading today) is an anthology sort of manga, Trigun Multiple Bullets, which is also in that post. it was released as part of the BLR movie release, & the first part is kinda After It? but overall it's just a standalone piece with some side stories. where is this in the manga canon timeline? Who Fuckin Knows. just read it and have fun lol

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST is the most recent anime, Trigun Stampede. this is a CGI remake that aired at the start of this year & caused the trigun renaissance. now a lot of people have a knee-jerk negative reaction to hearing it's CGI, but trust me, this is basically THE BEST application of CGI in anime i've ever really seen. absolutely beautiful. fucking gorgeous. plus with really cool action sequences, and OF COURSE the music is literally one of my favorite anime soundtracks Ever. it's gotten critiques for its pacing, which can be pretty rushed, but they were trying to fit a lot more story in a lot less episodes than the original anime (again, it only has 12 episodes), so keep that in mind. it's not a remake in the traditional sense of redoing the exact same story, so there are changes in the timeline and characters from what's in the original anime or even the manga. one of the biggest things people were unhappy about is the absence of a main character, Milly, who is seemingly replaced by a random man that's not in the other versions, Roberto. Milly will be in season 2 though, as was revealed with the final episode. all in all, it's Kind Of a prequel, though also a remix/reimagining based largely off of the manga's canon over trigun 98. so long as you go into it not expecting it to be Just Like the other versions, it's a really wonderful story in and of itself. it's available on Crunchyroll, which you SHOULD watch there if u have it bc that would give them more money for a season 2 (which is in development). if ur like me tho n dont wanna pay for crunchyroll (it's Specifically a premium-only anime :p), u can watch it where i watched, aka here: https://aniwatch.to/trigun-stampede-18281.

all in all, each version has its strengths and weaknesses, but i've found the best way to go about enjoying All of them is to treat them as their own things. it can be fun to compare them, especially when it comes to things made Different plot or character-wise, but they are separate things. a lot of people who hate one or the other r coming from the angle of expecting one to be just like the other, & are then disappointed (trigun 98 being a Lot sillier at first than trigun stampede, which is a lot more serious sci-fi western in tone).

And Overall. i love them all. so i hope you do too!

I personally think that my duality is silly, weird, kinda naive tbh, cute, chill, friendly, maybe a bit talkative? but im also very introspective, melancholic, wise, quiet, perceptive, thoughtful. i can be quiet insecure/self-deprecating/self-critical, i have a hard time being vulnurable and usually help others without allowing myself to be helped. i’m stubborn in that way and like to be independent and tough even though i crave being cared for lol. i am very passionate and empathetic and i have very strong intuition although i tend to ignore it in favor of “logic” and my attempts to feel in control. i am ambitious and always come up with grand ideas in my head and hyperfixate on them and ultimately become disappointed when i can’t bring it to fruition because it’s too ambitious. however that has also made me resourceful because i will find work arounds to make my ideas possible, even if it’s not how i originally planned.

i am a sort of solitary creature, and i know how to be my own best friend and to enjoy my own company, not having grown up with lots of friends. i didn’t used to go out much and i used to think i was very quiet and unsociable but after going out a bit more i have discovered that i can actually be a bit of a social butterfly, and it comes more naturally than i previously thought, although it makes sense considering i could talk to anyone and was a great leader/public speaker as a child. (and then anxiety/depression hit and i retreated into a shell as a teen.)

I used to say my favourite colour was green because I really like it, but then I thought it was grey because that is the colour i perceive myself as. but lately i have began thinking it might be red as that is what i have always been drawn to, regardless of what i think. idk why but it felt important to mention that.

anywhoo. my hobbies are playing any and all video games, watching horror movies, playing board games/card games, doing puzzles/puzzle books (crosswords, sudoku, word search), playing piano, singing. i love antiques and i love buying them because they are practical and beautiful and often much sturdier and long lasting than more modern things (they just ain’t built to last anymore) and i believe that they have so much character and soul and it’s tragic that there is a lost art in craftsmanship of furniture and clothing and like. shoes! and pens and clocks and everything! so i like to give those old beauties a new home where i can actually USE them as well as admire them.

i also love singing i have been told im good at singing but honestly i think im only mediocre. i sing in choir and i would honestly love to be an opera singer haha even though that might seem silly. i would love to be in a band too and i genuinely have been attempting to pursue that. oh i also study biochemistry in university i am suffering but it is interesting and i have always had an innate curiosity about things. i was a very dark but bright and curious child. i was fascinated by death and other things as a kid, but i never found it morbid it was just interesting to me.

i love science and random fun facts but i also love tarot and astrology (even though i barely know anything about it) and i am interested occultism and metaphysics and would love to know more about it because i don’t believe science and “magic” kind of stuff is mutually exclusive.

i feel like i am writing too much but you said write a lot so 😭 i enjoy talking abt myself as im sure most people do but i always feel bad for it lol. uhmm i do like writing and i used to do it a lot but ive been struggling with it lately. i also love lots of different types of “aesthetics” i suppose, such as dark academia/victoria /gothic/antique but also cottage core/witchy/nature/kinda hippy forest lady but also grunge/punk/garage rock/seattle in the 90s but also 70s and 80s style but also 2000s but i also sometimes enjoy modern fashion. idk im a real mixed bag but i love it i mean there are just so many things to love in the world. i am a very sleepy gal too i mean some people wake up early to be a hater but i wake up early so i can have time to go back to sleep.

I can confidently say until today i had never once considered the 'this is the most fun ive ever had' to be sarcastic. Maybe a bit hyperbolic, and not necessarily specifically talking about the video, but given the context of what dan has said meeting phil that year meant to him, i always took it at face value. I always thought it was a genuine, if only slightly jokey, comment about the day and finally meeting in person and filming a silly video with someone who understood him. Idk. Maybe i was reading too much into it lol

Thanks for sharing! Now that you mention it, I guess I can see how someone could interpret it as hyperbolic rather than sarcastic. Still, I feel like from knowing Dan, it being sarcastic made the most sense-- when you mention "given the context of what dan has said meeting phil that year meant to him", I do think that led you (and most likely many others!) to overthink this throwaway line.

No shade intended, though - I remember the excitement and constant questions that came with being in the Dan & Phil fandom at their height. It definitely lent itself to such a misunderstanding. I think different people view sarcasm differently too. That Dan back then wanted to point out that "welp, that sure was random wasn't it" doesn't mean he didn't value his time with Phil! (And if he didn't, we wouldn't be here right now lol.)

Vaguely related but I know some people think very differently of sarcasm and why someone would use it, because I remember my ex saying something along the lines of "I would never use sarcasm because it's mean". I think sarcasm is a fine tool for conversation... and I would never use it to be mean, because I wouldn't try to be mean to someone regardless of how I'm phrasing things. Anyway I'm just overthinking my explanation of "I think there are people who assume sarcasm means shadiness and that's why it would confuse them for Dan to have been sarcastic then" now

the thing about qiurong for me, as it is with many ships in big fandoms, it feels very forced ig by the fandom? i don't think im wording it correctly, but for me i usually don't end up liking many of those ships because it feels like people would just smush two characters together because they ran out of characters they can pair them with. and it's not necessarily a bad thing, but in this case the most im seeing from qiurong is fluffy family aus, which would never come to mind for me when i think about qr and lqq in a room together. again not a bad thing, not a bad ship, but personally not my cup of tea.

i do have to admit tho, im always kinda leaning towards more canon characterization, so i do have a particular tastes in ships i do ship and in definitely not one of the people who would read anything they can from the ships i like. so i think i wouldn't have gave up so quickly on quirong if i found something that suits my taste, because i do like both of their characters separately.

From his intervention in the gambler’s den and subsequent fight with Hua Cheng, to the way Xie Lian still wrangles him like they’re still teacher & student, to lqq’s “if I hadn’t stepped in, nobody else would,” to the anger and pain in his voice as he broke his own arm to make a fair duel against xl,,,,, there’s so many good scenes!!!!

I’m bouncing all of these qianqing scenarios around in my head but I’m also especially intrigued by a fy & lqq encounter. If lqq was already close with mq when he was put under house arrest, I don’t know if lqq would be able to ignore that— even if he was still hellbent on revenge against qr. Maybe lqq doesn’t recognize mq in fy’s form— his decision to help would come across as so much more sincere like that, I think. Mq isn’t even present but lqq— who is still so jaded by his own quest— still thinks so highly of mq,,,,,,, I think mq would be taken aback by the gesture. Meanwhile lqq knows what it’s like to be wronged and want to set things right— he can empathize.

I’m shaking your hands on the qiurong sentiments— again, I think it’s fun for people to explore ships however they want. I don’t really like it so I don’t really engage with it. They don’t scratch the right type of enemies to lovers tropes that I usually like and that’s okay! I’ll be peddling my lqq content off in the corner while people have fun in their spaces.

I think it’s okay and important to be selective about how you enjoy your media! Not every piece of art or fic was made to be universally enjoyed and that’s okay! Personally I’m with you on focusing on characterization— If I feel like my silly lil guys would not say the words being put in their mouths then usually I put what I’m looking at down and move onto something else.

We’re alike in side character enjoyment too LMAO. Not to analyze it too hard but— for me at least— I think it comes down to how much they have or have not been explored and the intrigue that comes with that possibility. Jensen:

The opportunities he's had in his career. Jensen came from as close to nothing as you can get, and the fact that he's made it so far is something he's incredibly grateful for (even if he doubts it here and there). The support system he's gained from his career as well as the expansion of his knowledge and education are things he never fathomed having before. He was so focused on surviving for so long he didn't think he could ever have anything extra or more, and now that he does, he couldn't imagine living without it.

Bryce of course. Jensen has a running list of poor decisions, many of his ex-partners on it, but Bryce is genuinely so different to anyone he's ever been with. Sure, in the beginning Jensen didn't think it would be that way, but after Bryce's initial,, yk,, being Bryce, it was very clear how much he cares. He listens, and is genuinely interested and invested in Jensen and what he finds important. He's always there with support whenever Jensen needs it, but he's also there just to make him laugh, too. Jensen is so grateful that Bryce is a part of his life, and that Bryce reciprocates it just as much.

The friend group. He's thankful that he's found a solid group of people who care about him and share similar interests. They're in it forever, and whether it be a celebration or the opposite, they're going to be there for each other. They're fun and entertaining but they know when to take things seriously. They share the same sense of humor, make fun of each other in a loving way, and would defend each other at any opportunity. Not only is he thankful that they're all in his life, he's thankful he gets to be a part of theirs, too.

Bryce:

How well he's done for himself since moving away from his parents. He had to figure out how to live, support himself, put himself through med school, and manage a new career without any support or advice. But guess what? He did it. He may bullshit and be cocky about his self confidence, but he's genuinely proud of himself for how far he's come and knows it wasn't easy. He's thankful that he was able to thrive despite conditions that were most certainly against it.

His family. The one he's made for himself, with Keiki, Jensen, and the pets. They're people he chooses to have in his life and (most of the time) they make it so much better. They can all be a pain in his ass here and there, but he knows they'd never do anything to intentionally hurt him.

Also the friend group. Bryce has learned a lot since being around them, and he's grateful they've given him the opportunity to grow and prove himself as a supportive friend. Though he's not as close as the roomies, he's thankful they include him as closely as anyone else. They're genuinely good people, and they push him to be better, but they're always there for him to fall back on if he needs it. If he needs anything, he knows he could go to any one of them and they would help without question or hesitation.

Ok this may sound like a weird question, but I've been seeing the Obi-wan/Anakin ship around a lot, you being one of them, and I was wondering why you ship them? /genq. You know, instead of thinking of them as friends or whatever. Since this ship is so big in the fandom, I'd like to hear the thoughs behind it?

Alright I don’t think I’m the most eloquent or best person to do a sort of…manifesto or anything, but I can give you a few reasons why I like the ship!

I think first of all I do think of them as friends! I don’t think I’d like the ship half as much if they weren’t friends! Their relationship as what it is in canon I think is one of the most compelling and tragic Ive encountered in modern media. They have a very, very strong friendship littered with half truths and mistakes on both their parts. There’s a very strong sense of love there in the movies, the novelizations, the tv show. Palpable fondness and a willingness to do anything for each other. They’re more than master & padawan, more than just friends. Brothers maybe, but even that I think almost falls short.

I like the romance aspect because I think it adds another layer to the story. I think they could have been everything the other needed if things were slightly different, but they’re not and that sucks but it’s so good to interact with, to pin down what could have changed if this one thing had changed.

To me, they have the most important and fleshed out relationship in the prequels. I love seeing Obi-Wan in A New Hope, watching over Luke and reminiscing about his father to him as if his father isn’t Darth Vader as well as Anakin. But Obi-Wan has kept Anakin’s lightsaber all these years. That always hits me as just. Tragic. Sentiment and regret that it had to be the way it had to be, but that’s a tragedy. The characters have their parts, etc etc

Not to mention that people (and me) find the actors attractive, and the forbidden aspect of a relationship between master & padawan as an interesting power dynamic to explore. When I’m writing, I toe the line of caution and don’t write about them getting together until sometime in the Clone Wars, because their age difference and power balance isn’t the biggest draw for me. But it’s a huge draw for others, which I think is understandable.

I like that they’re unreasonable about each other, I like that they defend each other both physically and to others. I like that they were fundamental to each other’s life so much that even in the original trilogy, both still feels the absence of the other. I don’t want to devalue that bond or that friendship by labeling it romance, but it’s fun to label it romance. It’s genuinely a good time to think of Obi-Wan pining away on Tatooine while Darth Vader tears apart the galaxy looking for Kenobi. It makes me laugh almost as much as it makes me sad.

And I especially like that they become Force ghosts together at the end of ROTS, that they are reunited in death and get to spend the afterlife together for as long as they want because Obi-Wan needed Anakin with him so much he taught him one last thing while he was dying: how to come home.

GOD its been a million years! im so sorry im answering all your asks so late.

Dylan (im gonna be using he/him for this analysis) is a bit of a tricky one for me, ive mentioned before that im used to being alone with my thoughts about Dylan and get nervous interacting with the fandom because of that. I'm insecure about being too forceful or intolerant of other people's relationship with the work, so i prefer to talk about characters im less bonded to be safe. But the other side of that i havent touched on is how revealing my reading of dylan is. A lot of how i feel about dylan relates to how i feel about myself and the time of my life when i first read those books. There is. GARUNTEED. to be projection. especially about the gender stuff. I'm not sure if im like- a good authority on Dylan. So take everything i say with a grain of 'This particular character is difficult to analyze objectively due to his creative and emotional influence on the mod."

Part I - Relationships

While I think the most immediately relevant topic of Dylan's psyche has to do with his trauma, I believe there are subtle hints to the kinda person he is normally, and how that traumatic incident compounded on his 'natural' insecurities. Therefore, its not just going to be about the fire, but rather what I think of Dylan's overall psyche, the well and not so wellness of it.

Dylan is presented as a happy cheerful person with great empathy for his enemies and allies alike. He's cheerful, patient, and trusting to people regardless of their status and seems to judge people by how they act as people. There are four instances of Dylan genuinely disliking someone in the series, two of those could be attributed to Dylan worrying about Alek's relationship with them. The other two, Fitzroy and Volger, Dylan is shown to dislike because the other party expressed dislike first. We never see the first interaction between Dylan and Fitzroy, but Dylan muses that since arriving on the airship Fitzroy had been overtly hostile and implied that the two had gotten into a physical fight that Dylan lost. The more developed relationship we see is between Dylan and Volger, Dylan approaching Volger with a level of nervous respect until Volger makes it clear that he doesn't trust him. (Even then, it takes Volger disparaging him AND Alek for him discomfort to cross over into overt dislike.) Both of these characters think they're better than Dylan, one might presume that Dylan doesnt like how stuck up they are but I think what makes this interesting is how Dylan treats Alek when THEY first meet.

Dylan had a truly inexhaustible reserve of patience for Alek from the moment they meet, even in the depths of a life-or-death situation. He is friendly and cheerful to Alek, despite his behavior being really no different to how Dylan resented being treated by Fitzroy. Dylan cheerfully meets Alek's open insults with jokes and comebacks then doesnt think twice about consoling a boy who had been a dick to him for the entire 24 hours they've known each other. Dylan doesn't care if you're stuck up or rude to him, in fact he seems to think it's funny, so what DOES actually cause Dylan to start disliking people?

In the aftermath of The Fight Dylan seems the most fixated on the fact that Alek replaced him with Tesla, the stuff about him being a stuck up prince is just window dressing for the thing that actually bothered him: Rejection. A lot of time is spent solidifying that Dylan's only real fear is fire, but I'd argue that his fear of rejection plays a larger role in his arc. He doesn't tell Alek his identity, not because he's afraid of Alek thinking any less of him, but because he doesn't want to be rejected. He knows that there is no 'win state' to his secret getting out- even though Dylan seems hilariously certain Alek would fall in love with him, he knows that the rejection is inevitable due to their statuses.

“Deryn had imagined the look of horror on his face. Not that she was a girl in boy’s clothes, or that she’d lied to him for so long. All that yackum Alek would soon get past, she knew. And then he would love her, she knew.

But that was the problem, because there was one thing that would never change.… Deryn was a commoner.”

Dylan has an uncanny ability to predict how other people will react, this little snippet in Behemoth is exactly how it eventually plays out in Goliath. He kept the secret from Alek because he knew that Alek would fall in love with him, and Alek loving him would end their friendship altogether. And, once this rejection comes to fruition, Dylan's internal monologue complains about the same kind of thing that he previously hated in Volger and Fitzroy, even though it hadn't bothered him before. Beneath the status, the insults, the misogyny, or the overall rudeness, the only thing that really causes Dylan to become hostile is being rejected.

It is notable that Dylan dislikes Lilit at first because he is jealous of her, but the moment he realizes that she is in love with him and not Alek, those feelings vanish. Though he's hardly receptive to her flirting, he is definitely warmer to her once he realizes that she is accepting him. Noticeably, its not flattery that wins him over- she gave him plenty of that when he still disliked her, but rather her understanding of who and what he is and accepting him outright that causes his perspective of her to shift.

I feel like the combination of Dylan's fear of rejection, tendency towards jealousy, and cheerful disposition to everyone he meets paints a picture. Dylan has faced a lifetime of rejection: He's rejected from the air service for his sex assigned at birth, his passions rejected by his mother, and spends the entire series terrified of being rejected by his best friend. It's mentioned that his mother attempted to brow-beat him into becoming a girl and that he was able to resist, but that kind of parenting doesn't just go away when you realize your parent was wrong. Dylan had to work hard to be the true version of himself, so he doesnt want to waste time with people who will question that struggle and avoid interactions that could lead to rejection. But at the same time he wants to prove that work was worth it. Its not enough to be dylan, he's gotta be dylan the best midshipman the best friend to alek the best at flying and the best at any task he's given. So he's cheerful. Helpful. Empathetic to other people's problems and lets insults slide. He tries to see the best in everyone until they make it clear they dont like him, in which case he is eager to find any reason to dislike them back even if it's hypocritical.

Dylan's other motivation is his non-standard loyalty. While it never crosses into outright treason, even Dylan is quick to make jabs at his own inability to prioritize his country. But I think he does have a loyal streak, its just similar to how his dislike works. In stark contrast to Volger, things like honor, tradition, and status mean nothing to Dylan. You gain Dylan's loyalty by being friends with Dylan, full stop. He doesnt care about darwinism because its the superior science or philosophically righteous, he just feels a sense of pride in the fact that he's apart of the society that invented it. he doesn't care about the leviathan because its his king's airship, he cares about it because he sees the crew as family. Once alek becomes apart of that family in his mind, Dylan finds it troublingly easy to trust a kid who is, by all other metrics, a complete outsider on the Leviathan. I mentioned before that Dylan was pretty cool with Alek when he was doing everything in his power to insult Dylan during their introduction, but there was one moment where he did drop his friendliness:

“Well, if your ‘beasties’ are so wonderful, then how did the Germans shoot you down? With machines.”

Dylan gave him a dark look, pulling off a glove. His bare hand curled into a fist. “Ten to one, and all of them went down too. And I’ll bet they didn’t land as softly.”

Alek realized he’d said too much. Dylan probably knew crewmen who’d been wounded, or even killed, in the crash.

Like with how he would start hating Volger later, it wasnt enough for Alek to insult him or the philosophy of darwinism. He only got mad when the insult extended to his allies. He is fiercely loyal, perhaps to his own detriment, it just isnt the kind of loyalty that monarchistic europe in the 1900s could appreciate. In Dylan's mind, everyone is deserving of a modicum of respect, often regardless of how they treat him, but he will get hostile if he perceives that he is being rejected or his allies insulted.

Part II - Trauma

Now it might seem that im reaching or over-exaggerating a bit for that last section, but I want to make it clear that I think these are things that his personality and motivations drift towards, not hard fast rules that are disordered or compulsive. People are built a certain way, and thats the way I hypothesize Dylan is built. His trauma, however, I am going to be a bit more heavy-handed in analyzing because i think trauma is what turns some of those neutral personality traits into flaws.

First off is the fire, a pretty straightforward depiction of PTSD. Easily the most traumatic moment of Dylan's life, leaving behind a fear of fire and a twisted suspicion of somehow wanting to die in the same way.

Most stories with child characters involve the children getting traumatized. We dont really think about it, but its sorta vital to the conflict that something awful happens on the adventure. But I think the line where its drawn in disturbia is when the child character is specifically hurt by something they used to enjoy. Theres a reason so many creepypastas involve beloved childhood IPs. There's a reason clowns and toys are utilized in horror. If the child is looking forward to a circus and willingly enters the belly of the beast believing he is going to have fun, it makes the dread lurch in your stomach all the harder once the trap closes.

I think a lot of Dylan's trauma manifests in that transition between comfort and terror. A hot air balloon, the thing that was integral to Dylan's growth and representative of his bond with his father, is now a trigger for him. He has conflicted feelings about his desire to fly being suicidal. He wouldn't wish his trauma on anyone, yet as a soldier has to condemn strangers to the same fate every time the claxon rings. The Leviathan is his home, a place where he can be himself and do the thing he loves. But its also a war machine that forces him to lie to his new family and could go up in flames at any moment.

And then theres the other side of trauma, the slow and subtle kind. (Fair warning, this is where I start to project/speculate a little) We dont learn much about the two years Dylan spent with his mother before the first book, but the threat of going back to that situation hangs heavy over Dylan's chapters. Sometimes its petty and surface level, not wanting to fail or be stuffed back into skirts. But sometimes hints of something darker is referenced in passing- months where he apparently refused to eat or speak. Recurring nightmares that could only be soothed by staring all night at the medal. implies that, despite having a still living parent, he still feels like he's an orphan. Having never talked about what he saw during the accident until alek, not even to his brother or his mother or his aunts. Those years are described as 'impossible' and at one point in behemoth Dylan seems to contemplate's death as preferable to returning to them. We never know if it was just the result of lingering trauma or something that Dylan's family did, but whatever it was it was bad enough that Jaspart agreed to this insane plan just to get him out of Glasgow.

While there is more intensity to the scenes showing Dylan's fear of fire, I believe that slower and subtler trauma that accounts for the conflict in his arc. Some part of him was broken by what happened, a presumably natural aversion to being rejected turns into a fear of abandonment. The desire to impress and prove himself turns into avoiding his feelings vicious self-doubt.

We love what a show off dylan is, but I think its easy to understate the disdain in how often he refers to himself as 'common as dirt.' Alek never said that about him, not even Volger did. Dylan started referring to himself that way in his head on his own, and notably does it every time his feelings for Alek bubble to the surface. Dylan is afraid of ruining his friendship with Alek for his own sake, but part of him also feels like it would be selfish to deprive Alek of his only friend. Why should alek, whose whole world is on fire and has this whole destiny to worry about, have to deal with Dylan's problems on top of that?

This is ultimately what causes the fight- Alek is so used to seeing Dylan as this perfect soldier that he cannot comprehend that Dylan might have actually been ashamed or afraid to tell him his secret. It doesn't even occur to him that Dylan might be insecure, he assumes that it has to be, ironically, a rejection of Alek's confidence.

And thats why I feel like the sitation around the fire has more negative consequences than the fire itself. Hell- his trauma doesnt even stop him from acting heroically. It seems to fuel it further. His PTSD manifests as him rushing in to save Newkirk from the burning huxley. The part after is harder for him to process. That's when he starts to think about whether his need to fly is suicidal, when he wonders if he belongs here, and when his trust issues and insecurities become more pronounced. He knows as he's being triggered that it will effect him later, and somehow seems even more afraid of the nightmares coming back than the fire itself.

Part III - Identity

This is the bit I've been dreading talking about, because I think this one is the most colored by my own relationship with gender and experience with cross-dressing as a narrative conflict. I stand by there being genuine evidence of Dylan experiencing dysphoria and euphoria. I do think there is some thematic evidence for him cross-dressing for more reasons than wanting to fly. And as someone who read a lot of polly oliver books for presumably no reason at all, Dylan does stand out from the usual tropes in ways I find interesting.

Compare Dylan to characters like Alanna the Lioness or Jackie Faber.

Both of these characters shed their male personas the moment they no longer profit from them, Jackie by the end of the first book, then spend the vast majority of the series building their reputation as women in a male-dominated field. Alanna and Jackie like being girls, they sneak away from their male friends to get wear dresses and makeup in secret. The topic of gender only comes up either to disparage the patriarchy or to reclaim their femininity. A lot of time is spent contemplating the dissonance of their traditionally masculine skills and their desire to present as women. They find their own version of femininity that allows them to be themselves whilst doing what they love, and that should be celebrated. Femininity is not the enemy, it's not a corrosive force that ruins your life. It is possible to be a proud woman whilst disagreeing with feminine gender roles.

But that never comes up in Leviathan. At all.

Dylan never has a desire to reclaim his femininity, never feels an urge to dress up, and never feels conflicted about his wants as a woman and his career. The only attempt to present feminine is in costume, and only with the caveat that Alek, another boy, is presenting as feminine with him.

What conflict his gender DOES bring in the narrative looks like this:

“(Deryn) sighed. Might as well jump now, without a barking rope.”

“Don’t worry, lad,” the bosun said from beside her. “It’s never as far as it looks.”

She nodded, wishing that it was something piffling like a keelhaul drop that had her jittery. Gravity was something you could beat; all it took was hydrogen, hot air, or even a bit of rope. But being a girl was a miserable, never-ending struggle.”

That doesn't sound like someone who would sneak out at night to practice her makeup or secretly sew herself a dress to wear on a date with her boyfriend. That sounds like someone who would rather die than be outed, who describes his gender as a miserable never-ending struggle.

And I don't think its just that a man wrote this, Lilit serves as a fascinating foil to Dylan:

“Lilit wasn’t a bad sort, really. She was a dab hand with machines, as good at piloting as any of the men. In a way, she’d managed the same trick as Deryn had—acting like a man—without pretending, and that was a splendid sort of anarchy, one had to admit.”

Dylan appreciates femininity when Lilit is performing it, and isn't all that baffled to find Lilit being able to balance her ambition and womanhood. That leads me to believe that Dylan understands there are options for presenting as female whilst following his dreams. After all, his dad took him up in balloons back when he presented as female. Presumably, he just needed to find another mentor willing to teach a girl. He could have spent his inheritance (or presumably, insurance) on a replacement balloon and had Jaspart go up with him. This is even lampshaded in goliath, with alek trying to find out if there's anyone else like Dylan and realizing that its easier for women to just go on adventures than try to dress up as men:

“The thought of the heroine made (Alek) turn to Mr. Francis again. “Do women in America really fly about in balloons?”

“Well, they must want to! The Perils of Pauline is so popular that our competitors are getting in on the act, making something called The Hazards of Helen. And we’re already planning The Exploits of Elaine.”

“How . . . alliterative,” Alek said. “But outside of moving pictures, do women actually do these sorts of things?”

The man shrugged. “Sure, I suppose so. Ever heard of Bird Millman?”

“The high-wire walker? But she’s a circus performer.” Alek sighed. For that matter, Lilit had known how to use a body kite. But she was a revolutionary. “What I mean is, do normal women ever fly?”

Count Volger spoke up. “I think what Prince Aleksandar wants to ask is, do American women pretend to be men? It is currently a subject of intense study with him.”

Alek gave the wildcount a hard look, but Mr. Francis only laughed.

“Well, I don’t know about flying,” he said, “but we’ve sure got a lot of women wearing trousers these days. And I just read that one in twenty walker pilots is female!”

Its subtle, but the implication is that between Lilit, Dr. Barlow, and Adella Rogers, Dylan's choice wasnt entirely practical. Dylan chose the air service. he chose a disguise. And here's another interesting difference: We never see how Dylan made that choice.

In all other instances of the polly oliver trope, including ones that openly explore gender like Terry Pratchett's Monsterous Regiment, we always see a girl decide to become a boy and watch every step of her transformation.

Dylan, despite being introduced to us with female pronouns, is presented post transition. He has already cut his hair, chosen a new name, replaced his wardrobe, and made arrangements to sneak into the air service. We never learn what made him come up with this plan and why his brother agreed to risk his own career when easier legal options were also available.

The chapters in another Polly Oliver book spent with the heroine worriedly finding solutions to her secrets are spent with Dylan feeling the euphoria of passing as male. More time is spent with him describing how happy and fulfilled he is aboard the leviathan than the sparse mentions of how he maneuvers showering or taking a piss. The day to day discomfort of 'living a lie' is mentioned in passing but never elaborated on because Dylan's conflict has nothing to do with his gender.

It has to do with his relationships and his trauma. His gender only comes up in relation to his sexuality, and only then because he has a victorian's understanding of what sexuality is. He associates his feelings for alek as being girly but ultimately doesn't need to present as female to act on those feelings. He and Alek start a relationship with Alek attracted to his male persona. He only presents as female once their relationship is established, and even then Alek muses that Dylan doesnt look that different. He's a boy in a dress. A stylish and handsome boy in a dress, but its just the person Alek's dating wearing a particular piece of clothing.

And even though the bonus chapter isnt meant to be the narrative conclusion that Scott planned, I think there is some confirmation to be found for Dylan's arc.

“When she was dressed, Deryn gazed at her reflection in a darkened window. Her usual self stared back: female and fifteen. The careful tailoring only made her look queerly skinny, not so much a boy as some tattie bogle set out in old clothes to scare the crows.”

Dylan starts the series as a girl in her brother's clothes and ends the series as a boy in a dress.

And thats me vomiting all my Dylan opinions! I hope this was worth the read!

first, i wanted to say this is inspired by one of my closest friends my bitch @honeybunstarker . thank u for that 

secondly, i wanted to say a final goodbye. i know that i nearly left a few months ago, but i was still on the fence about writing for marvel then. now, ive lost all interest. thank you all for fueling my love for writing, and making these past two (??? i actually don’t know) years full of excitement and encouragement! from the ups (the blocklist, secret santa) to the downs (my favorite blogs and friends deactivating without a word), ive had the greatest time in this fandom. 

in case you were worried, i am NOT deactivating. my fics will be available for you to read whenever you want.

but, i will not be writing for marvel anymore, nor will i be posting on this blog.

now that the sad part is done, i didn't want to leave you guys without anything to entertain yourselves with. so, here are my favorite fics, including some non-marvel, from this year!

my top fic from this year, which is also one of my favorite fics of all time, is a dog named sunshine.

“Bucky Barnes has issues. Mental health issues, and a whole lot of them, to be precise. Bucky is fucked up, and he knows that. His apartment looks like a dumping ground on most days, he can’t sleep through the night, sometimes he doesn’t shower for six days and doesn’t leave the house except to see his therapist once a week. Mostly, Bucky has no idea how the whole “talking about your problems” thing is supposed to help him, but sometimes his therapist has some really great ideas. Like getting a dog. Which is how Bucky meets Steve. Steve has blond hair and shoulders as broad as Bucky’s future if he wouldn’t suffer from depression and multiple mental disorders, and a waist as small as Bucky’s self-esteem. Steve also has a yellowish dog with floppy ears called Sunshine. And sunshine makes its way into Bucky’s life with a bounce in its step.”

a modern stucky fic which portrays depression in the best way i have seen in a fic so far. unfortunately, it has been orphaned before being finished :(

HI!!!!!! my dsmp hot takes would probably be:

-i like c!ranboo, he was my first favorite character and cc, but ive lost so much investment in him overtime because of the sheer amount of unsolved mysteries about him that have never been answered and, with his lore having been shelved atm, probably never will :(. the mysteries were so intriguing and engrossing at first, but with time going on for him to only create more unanswered questions instead of solve any of them i think ultimately hinders his character a lot. seriously, it's been 8 months since his january lore and we still don't even know what his other half is nor what his and c!dreams relationship is 😭😭😭

(^ THAT IS NOT INTENDED TO BE CRIT AT ALL BTW!!!! i still 100% respect cc!ranboo and know he's always had trouble getting people involved with his lore but my qualms are still there.)

-stop telling artists how to draw characters. stop. dude. just stop. if you don't like a headcanon that's fine but that's all they are. HI CALLI !!!! WONDERFUL TAKES AS ALWAYS !!!!!!!! i agree with you about c!ranboo, i think he has the opportunity to tell a really compelling story. but that's just.... Not Happening right now. nor does it look like it will anytime soon 😔 having a dsmp interest way later than everyone else, i don't really have an attachment to c!ranboo tbh. i can only imagine how exciting it was watching his lore live, and i think missing out on that and how Stuck his character is just didnt make me all that much of an enthusiast. what i love most about c!ranboo is the fanart, tbh. artists who draw c!ranboo are SO fucking talented, and there are so many different phenomenal fan designs for him. but in the end though there are just. many puzzles about his character that can only be solved with more lore. most of all i really want to fucking know what's going on with him and c!dream, feeling SO normal about the unsolved mystery of who set the explosives up in the prison! i am personally convinced its c!ranboo. also not crit on my end, i still really do love c!ranboo!!!!! i just don't think abt him Nearly as much as my other dsmp faves 😭😭

on 2 ur second point.... the artist critique drives me nuts. something i love so much about dsmp artists is they all are so fucking CREATIVE!!!! like you said, headcanons are one of the best things about this fandom❗❗ you can tell artists put so much time + effort into their designs. it's fucking inspiring. i truly never get bored going through dsmp art !!!!!!! and tbh? vilbur is definitely not my Favorite thing to see. but im not going to tell people to stop drawing twisted freaking cycle path c!wilbur. not my place, its rude as fuck, and a lot of cool art vilbur art does exist 😳 unless the art is harmful and genuinely needs correcting (like poc informing white people on how to draw characters/ccs who are poc respectfully is for sure needed critique) just.       Im in a mood where im just thinking about some of my favorite fics, so im gonna talk about them, why they are amazing, and the authors, if your willinng to listen to me ramble look under the cut.

 they all just so happen to be the kind with really great oc’s and certain character development that makes even the canon characters so much different, which is funny because usually i tend to shy avay from oc things due to it usually being mary sueish (not that thats bad, honestly great for those writers, go have fun and do whatever you want, go enjoy whatever you want, its just not my thing in any media).

      like the kind that genuinely should have its own fandom and shit, also both of the writers im talking about have also started other projects since ive been reading their fics. i found each author at different points  while in different fandoms, i found @mewmewchann ‘s Despair From The Heart when i was really into danganronpa and following her blog was one of the big things that led me to interacting with things i enjoy in general. 

      Despair From The Heart is a fangan that follows the 52nd killing game aka rantaro’s first killing game, all of the characters and murders are amazing and there is so many great twists and secrets and i really love it, the characters are super great and i actually tend to enjoy a lot of them more than some canon characters. its also fun to ship them and all the canon pairings have amazing dynamics and chemistry. i really recommend reading it in general. 

     shes also making a second fangan staring an entire cast of awesome characters, its just starting out, but knowing her writing im excited to see where its gonna go and what its gonna do with the setting and cast it has, this one is also semi illustrated with big scenes being illustrated. i really recommend both of her fics if you want a great fangan that defies most of the danganronpa rules, or if your not into danganronpa, just for the plot and characters because they are so good, i would advise not to read it if your squemish about gore of death cause some of them are super brutal.

      the second author i found really recently actually, the fic i found has been ongoing since 2016, with a long hiatus at some point before i found it. the funny thing about this one was that i wasnt in either fandom when i found this fic, i was looking for crack marvel crossovers with random fandoms because marvel crossovers tend to be surprisingly good sometimes and i like them, i found it cause of wordcount i think and decided it looked like a fun read. anyway its a homestuck crossover, now im young enough to have never gotten into homestuck, heck if i hadnt had a habit of researching internet history i probably wouldnt know it existed, well i guess ive been dragged into liking it now, but i wasnt at the time

      A Lullaby For Gods is a homestuck/marvel fic that starts out as a light fluffy crackfic about the beta kida and loki all sharing an apartment in new york after the events of thor... it did not stay that way haha... at some point plot starts to actually happen and it keeps picking up from there, it follows a homestuck kind of act style and the other homestuck kids are slowly introduced, the story focuses a lot on the characters and their development and relationships while also having an amazing set up and forshadowing for plot points, the development really does feel natural and we’ve ended up with some really great characters that have developed from canon characters, and some amazing original characters that are definitely being more focused on later in the story where the plot really gets crazy. there are also main cast characters based on Will Graham from Hannibal, and Cecil Palmer and Kevin from Welcome to Nightvale, though these are mostly just characters based on the source material and its not a plot point. its overall excellent and i cant recommend it enough! (also hello, the ships are also immaculate, even if one of the best isnt canon, halsaph my beloved, oh well at least we still have nereus and HoD /lh)

      @inkteacup the author, is an amazing writer whos characters are incredibly interesting, made even more so by their different relations to the homestuck kids. im incredibly happy i found them as their writing is something i really enjoy. the other project they’re working on is a webcomic set in a sci-fi/fantasy world with things like aliens and also magic, its not very far along so i dont know much but there is a language so thats fun. it seems to be a very fleshed out world, and it supposedly focuses more on the original characters from lullaby which im very excited about, with im assuming some characters based off the homestuck characters from the fic, i say from the fic because some of them have undergone enough development they feel more like original characters based on homestuck characters. i really wish all of these would blow up and gain their own fandoms but the rest are fanfiction so thats pretty improbable, so ill probably be spreading a lot of star stranded propaganda because i want at least one of these to get big and even if the chance is tiny its still a chance, ill also probably be spreading propaganda for all the fics too but star stranded the most probably. if i have time

      i genuinely think both of these writers are amazing at what they do and im definitely going to be continuing reading and consuming their content as its incredibly interesting, i really want to thank both of these authors for always making my day with their stories, even when im left crying over anshu and literally everyone in dfth, even when im left laughing about the groupchat being chaotic cunning crime found family or when japer is his evil conniving self, especially when im left giddy as nereus reminisce about the heir or after saph gives hal his first real hug after telling him he deserves to be cared about or when miko fussed over ayano or rikona dragged the kid she was determined to be friends with places to have fun. both of your works mean a lot to me at this point and from the bottom of my heart, thank you.
