So with the Hawkeye series coming out, I thought that I'd rec my all time favorite Clint Barton fanfiction. I will say that Clint in this fic is more like Comics Clint Barton rather than MCU Clint, but it is still a delightful read!

My Comments: So this is a pretty awesome fic. I really enjoyed the concept of it. And you all know that I love anything that includes time travel. The pairing in this is Bucky/Clint, and the author actually pulls it off. This is a ship that I never knew I needed. This was written around the time that Age of Ultron came out, so anything that came out after that isn't relevant. Also in this fanfic Clint doesn't have a family. So no Laura or Lila. Also the timeline is a bit different and though this takes place before CA;TWS, Wanda and Pietro are still in it. The author's note explains this all better. Anyway, I highly recommend this fic!!! I promise you that you will love it!!

Winterhawk Rec List

this is mainly for @exhalesimon who asked me for a list, because I realized I love too many Winterhawk fics to just text them. But everyone’s welcome to share in the joys of this ship!! It just sort of worked out that it’s my top 20 winterhawk fics, but they are sorted in the order in which Katey needs to know them rather than like, if any are “the best” (they’re all the best - as are a lot that didn’t make it onto this list).

1. Complications by flawedamethyst

Clint's got a plan to retire and go find himself a simple life at his family's old farm. Simple is good, right? Easy to remember. Simple is why he doesn't really mind that his soul-print has never activated, because a soulmate could only add another layer of complexity to his life.

And then the Winter Soldier turns up at his archery range on the Avengers base, and simple slips through Clint's fingers.

Post Age-of-Ultron (minus Clint's wife&kids) Soulmate AU.

2. What do you mean we left Clint on Mars? by sara_holmes

“What do you mean we left Clint on Mars?”

Cap’s incredulous voice cuts through the stunned silence of the cockpit, loud and shocked. He’s standing there with his cowl in hand, gaping at the holo-screen at the front of the jet. Next to him, Tony is standing with his hands on his head, mouth hanging open in a similar fashion. Over on the other side of the cockpit is Jane, who has both palms clapped across her mouth like she’s trying to hold back hysterical giggles.

For his part, Bucky is just staring at the screen like he can’t quite believe what’s going on.

7. Lost & Found by mariana_oconnor

Clint Barton’s got a bag full of stolen money and a burning desire to stay under the radar. His old friends in the Carnival will be looking for him and they sure as hell won’t be happy. In a desperate attempt to stay off their radar, he ends up in Timely, a small town so far off the beaten track he’s surprised he even found it, and waits for Barney to comes and get him. Because Barney will be coming. Clint knows he will.

But there's something about the town. Maybe it's the strange wolf that watches him from the trees, and the way people finish conversations when he enters a room. Or it could be the bartender, Bucky, who decided to hate him on sight. Something’s going on in this small town, and Clint’s not sure if he’s jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire.

8. Cluster Got Your Back, Bro by flawedamethyst

Sense8 Avengers AU.

Being psychically linked to seven people scattered around the globe turns out to involve rather more taking down foreign governments than Clint had expected, but at least it's a good cheat for keeping up with the latest episode of Dog Cops.

9. The Tragic Ballad of an Under-Caffeinated Hawkeye by sara_holmes

Steve and Tony are idiots, Pepper and Phil are 110% done with everyone and Clint just wants a cup of damn coffee. And maybe someone to appreciate how awesome he clearly is.

Also known as: you know you’re in trouble when Clint Barton is the one sane person left in the tower and Bucky Barnes is the only one who realizes this.

10. Strike at the Heart Of by sara_holmes

The Avengers think he's traumatised, Fury thinks he needs a break, Natasha wants him to recover. Well, screw those guys. Clint is going to go and make some new friends that appreciate how badass and competent and not-messed-up-after-Loki he is.

It goes great, until it doesn't.

Note for Katey: Clint is technically (but accidentally!!) working for Hydra in this one. Kevin thinks that’s on the same level as Hydra Cap. I disagree. But I thought I’d put it out there.

11. With Us (or Without) by dentalfloss

“What the actual f*@k,” Fury glared incredulously, “are monkey’s doing here?”

“They’re marmosets, Sir,” Hill corrected flatly as Tony looked between them all with glee.

“They’re also with us,” Clint stated, not amused and clearly not giving two shits about anyone’s actual opinion of the matter as he stood there with a marmoset on his shoulder, and Natasha Romanov and the Winter Soldier backing him up.

or: SHIELD handles things badly after Loki, and Clint doesn't take it well. Neither does Natasha.

Note for Katey: This is pre-slash but it’s also a favorite so it’s gotta be on the list.

12. Showdown by shatteredhourglass

Bucky was happy for Steve, he was. But did he and Tony have to be so disgustingly romantic all the time? // In which Bucky is tired of Steve and Tony's antics and Clint suggests revenge, which turns out with an additional bonus.

13. Just a little bit true by lissadiane

Clint is awesome at cheerleading, acrobatics, throwing girls in the air and catching them again, making Natasha laugh against her will, being a wingman to Natasha as she continues playing the long game with Sam Wilson, and somehow managing to get to school in time for 5 AM practices (with the aid of so, so much coffee).

Clint is less good at flirting with Bucky Barnes, his long-time high school crush but, damn it, he's trying his best.

In which Clint Barton is a walking human disaster, a fucking amazing cheerleader, and hopelessly infatuated with Quarterback Steve Roger's broody best friend.

14. Muza by sara_holmes

Where Bucky decides that he does not have time for looking after a puppy because he can barely look after himself. Clint has other ideas.

Note for Katey: This fic is everything to me.

15. All My Mistakes by claraxbarton

Next job I’m taking is going to be south of the equator, Clint promised himself as he finished zipping up his down coat. He wished he had another. He was already wearing a black balaclava and a black beanie, thermal underwear under his clothes and two pairs of pants, but it was freezing on the rooftop.

The wind and the fine, misty rain that couldn’t decide if it wanted to be snow, ice or rain definitely didn’t help matters.

Clint hated the cold.

He didn’t understand why millionaire criminal masterminds couldn’t meet in exotic, warm locations to do their deals.

If he was a millionaire criminal mastermind, he sure as hell wouldn’t do deals in London in February.

Bucky had always thought that Wakanda was just about the closest thing to Heaven that he’d ever find, so it makes sense that he’d wind up here, at a celestial version of it, at the end of everything.

He sits up and closes his eyes as a soft breeze blows over his face and through his hair and he thinks maybe if he’d known that this is what death would be like, he’d have let it come earlier.

17. Ain’t That a Kick in the Head by Finely Honed

“That guy out there? Lovin’ him is the best part of being alive, Steve. We both know I can be just as stubborn, and maybe twice as oblivious as you. I wanted Clint so bad, for so long, but I was all turned around, and lying to myself, makin’ excuses as to how it was some crazy side effect of spending so much time together. But the truth was? I was scared. It was too big, so I tried like hell to hide from the truth, right up until I went and got blown up. Then it was total fuckin’ clarity time.”

There's no way Clint is going to let that asshole Bucky Barnes beat him to be the best driver at Avengers Couriers, especially not when he always goes out of his way to try and piss Clint off.

It's not that Bucky doesn't want to talk. It's that sometimes (most of the time) he can't. So learning ASL is 50% getting around that slight issue and 50% getting Steve to shut his cake

-hole about the necessity of him learning to speak again.

Well, to begin with. Then it's pretty much all about him falling head-over-heels for his incredibly hot - yet slightly tragic - ASL teacher.

20. Outnumbered by sara_holmes

Bucky Barnes returns to Brooklyn ready to get back into the world, make friends and sleep with Steve's super hot neighbor. The fact that the guy turns out to be a single dad to two-year-old triplets who spend most of their time causing mischief, trouble and hell doesn't deter Bucky at all. Steve would like it on record that he thinks Bucky is insane.

Fun Facts:

Theo and Chris are brothers. Their the great grandsons of James Montgomery Falsworth one of the howling commando, who fought alongside Steve Rogers and Bucky Branes.

Jake is the great grandson of Jacques Dernier, who was also part of the howling commando. He was named after him.

Steve is a attampted clone of Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes. He was created in secret by a corrupt SHIELD scientist and his team. He is the result of an attempt to recreate the DNA of Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes, which they wanted to use to create an army of Super Soldiers. He was named after Steve and Bucky by the scientist just like the other attempts who didn't survived. When SHIELD found out about this experiment they ended this immediately by shutting down the lab and imprisoned those responsible. They took Steven to the SHIELD HQ, where he was eventually adopted by Maria Hill. Because the scientist didn't used the real DNA of Steve and Bucky but one that was created by himself he's not an exact clone of both of them and doesn't really shares the same DNA as them. He was about 10 when he was adopted by Maria. Later he became a trainee for SHIELD before he joined the young Howling Commando to keep an eye on the other kids.

Chris and Steve are best friends. Through Steve him and his brother Theo joined the team too.

Thalia and Carly are also best friends and classmates of Steve and Chris. They joined the team after Chris and his brother and were invited by Steve and Chris.

Side Info: The idea of Steve being a clone is from zimnyayavdova. At first I planed to make him just some guy who happened to be part of the team and who was a trainee from SHIELD. But then she pointed out that he kinda looks like the clone of Steve and Bucky and that he could have been adopted by Maria Hill so I just adopted this idea and added some extra infos. Which is pretty good because so I could name him Steve too just like the character the actor played in Stranger Things. When I was looking for names, I couldn't see him with any other name than Steve. But then again I didn't wanted him to be a complete clone of them so I came up with the idea that a crazy scientist wanted to clone Steve and Bucky but didn't had their complete DNA so he tried to creat it by himself and therefore changed the DNA. That's why despite being a clone of them he doesn't completley shares the same DNA but only a part of it. So basically, if a DNA test were done, there would be some matches like it would be with close relatives like an uncle etc.

A Twist of Fate (1/?)

Summary- Roman Evans knew she’d never see the love of her life ever again after he “died” back in the 40s. Bucky Barnes knew he’d never be able to see his best girl ever again. What happens when fate grants them a second chance at seeing each other again?

Pairing- Bucky x Female OC

Warnings- Cursing. Smut(eventually maybe).

~Roman’s pov~

Ya ever been in love? Ya know the kind where ya swear God himself made ya two to be together forever. That’s how it felt to be with James Buchanan Barnes. Until God decided to separate us. Forever. And in a cruel twist of fate, not only did I lose the love of my life but I lost my best friend as well. I didn’t want to live in a world where Bucky Barnes and Steve Rogers didn’t exist. Without Peggy Carter, I would’ve died a long time ago. I ended up dedicating my time to training and to help replicate the serum using some of Steve’s blood. Many attempts later, it was finally complete. I volunteered to be the guinea pig for the serum and it turned out to be a success. I became a Super Soldier. The only side effect was that it changed my hair for brown to silver. Though the war was over there were still threats that plagued. I eventually became the new face of America after I was seen stopping a high speed car chase and was named Lady Silver. Though I knew I could never replace Steve, fighting to protect and save lives became my biggest distraction from the crumbing truth. That I’d never see my Bucky or him ever again. But Peggy and Howard Stark were there to help me when I needed them most. With them by my side along with the Howling Commandos, multiple Hydra bases were taken down. This went on for a few years. Until God decided to play a sick trick and in another cruel twist of fate I had to sacrifice myself to save New York. The same way Steve sacrificed himself.

“I’ll see ya soon boys.”

Those were the last word Peggy heard me say before the connection was lost.

Now

~General pov~

Tony was looking through a few boxes of his fathers stuff when he came across a box marked ‘Project Rebirth 2.0’. Being the curious little butterfly he is, he opened the box. The first thing that caught his eye was a file with the name Lady Silver on the front. He opened it and found a black and white picture of his father with two women standing to his left. The bottom of the picture dated 1948. Before Tony looked any further, he calls to his A.I, FRIDAY. “Yes Mr.Stark?”

“Find Rogers and Barnes, tell them to meet me in the lab.”

“Yes sir.”

After a few minutes, the two super soldiers appear in the doorway,”What’s up Tony?”

“I was looking through my father’s things when I came across a box. Inside I found a file.”

Bucky crosses his arms, “What kind of file?” He was worried it was about him from his Hydra days.

“Ever heard of Project Rebirth 2.0?”

Steve looks at Tony with confusion,”Project Rebirth is the super soldier serum experiment. That’s how I became Captain America.”

“Apparently you weren’t the only one that participated.”, Tony shows Bucky and Steve the picture. Steve takes it in his hands. “It’s Howard….and Peggy”, he fights the urge to cry. Bucky points to the woman in between the two, “But who’s that?”

They both look at the woman who was holding twin katana blades. “She’s called Lady Silver. When she became a super soldier, apparently her hair turned silver as a side effect hence the name.” Tony continues to read the file. “This happened two years after you went into the ice, Cap. She was pronounced killed in action in 1949.”

“She looks familiar”, Bucky said still looking at the photo.

“I agree, but how would we have known her? Does the file say her real name?”

Tony flips through the paperwork and shakes his head, “FRIDAY, give me everything you got on Lady Silver.”

All three men look at the screen Tony pulls up. Pictures and videos start to pop up. Videos of her training, others of her playing with children or messing around with the Howling Commandos. The pictures consisted of her in war zones or smiling with Peggy and Howard or her appearances with the public. One picture Steve’s eye the most, he taps it to enlarge the image. It was her saluting to the memorial dedicated to him with her back to the camera. “How does this woman feel so familiar yet so unrecognizable?”, Steve couldn’t wrap his head around it.

“Does the file say how she was killed?”, Bucky asked.

Steve looked through the papers till he found what he was looking for. “ 1949: A cargo plane carrying a series of bombs was heading to New York with the intent to decimate it. The only way to save New York was for Lady Silver to crash land into the Arctic. Sacrificing herself for the lives of many. -Agent Carter,SSR”

The room fell silent as the three men took in the information.

“Hold on a sec. If she died how Steve did, wouldn’t she be frozen?”

“She could still be alive.”

“Only one way to find out”, Tony says as he closes the file and stands up. “FRIDAY, get an extract team together and send the coordinates of Lady Silver’s crash site to the quinjet.”

“Yes sir”

Tony then turns to Steve and Bucky, “Go find Bruce, tell him to get the medbay ready. Just in case.”

Bucky was about to protest but Steve grabbed his shoulder, “Come on Buck.”

The two soldiers leave to go find Bruce. Tony looks at the picture of her once more, “I don’t know who you are, but I think it’s time for you to come home.”

MASTERLIST

The Smithsonian was swarming with people, as expected on a warm weekend. Bucky had a cap on his head, wearing a red henley that covered his arms and a pair of old washed jeans. He strolled around the exhibits with his hands in his pocket, rounding the Captain America exhibit.

This wasn’t his first visit there since leaving Hydra. The first was when Steve brought him to help him, them, find some comforting part of the 40s. There was even this little corner with some information about Bucky himself and his Howling Commandos comrades. He enjoyed spending his free afternoons in the museum, it was the closest thing to his home back in the 40s he had in this big new country.

Student groups came and went with their teachers, no one paid mind to Bucky; and he liked that, peace and quiet. He settled himself in front of Steve’s motorcycle. His lips turned slightly into a small smile thinking about just now much his best friend used to like that bike.

The silence he had in his mind was broken when he heard squabbling to his left. Turning to the direction, his eyes fell to a small group of pre-schoolers decked in blue. In the center of the group was a young girl and boy; the boy was holding his shin, a grimace on his face and the girl had an indignant look on hers, her tiny arms crossed in front of her.

“How dare you call the Winter Soldier a monster? The sergeant is a hero you hear me?” words tumbled out of the young girl, the frown on her face deepening. The boy looked up at her and sneered “How would you know? You’re just a girl.”

Before the girl could give him a piece of her mind, the teacher stepped between the two and demanded them both to apologize to each other. “You two will be on time out. Sit on the bench with Mrs. Mary and reflect. Both of your parents will pick you up when the tour for the rest of the class ends. No argument!” the teacher warned, voice stern and brows furrowed.

Bucky looked on as he saw the two children sat on the two furthest ends of the bench, the girl still had her arms crossed. He took a seat on the bench nearest to theirs and at that point, he’s decided he was going to watch over her till her parents came. Just in case the boy was to do anything sneaky.

At that thought, he chuckled at himself and thought since she was going to defend his honor, he shall do his part and be her guardian for that afternoon. It was probably one of the sweetest things anyone has done for him since the 40s. A tiny girl defending him when he couldn’t even bring himself to defend his own honor.

“I’ll have you know that my mom works with the Avengers and she knows the Winter Soldier and she says he’s a war hero. Without him, we’ll all probably be Hydra.” she huffed, side-eyeing the boy as her teacher stood a short distance away, probably calling their parents.

A short half hour later, a young woman hurried into the exhibition hall, her heels clicking away. She lowered herself to the height of the young girl and chastised lightly, her eyes betraying her true emotions. “I heard someone’s in trouble, young lady,” she said, bopping the little girl’s nose.

Straightening herself, she shook the hands of the teacher and after a short conversation turned to her daughter and said, “Young lady, you will apologize to Brian now and say you’re sorry for kicking him the shin. There’s no excuse good enough for hurting someone you hear me.” The young girl begrudgingly turned to the smug boy and muttered a half-hearted sorry.

“And you Brian. You will apologize to Poppy for saying she’s just a girl. And for calling someone you don’t know a monster. Poppy is a lovely girl who will turn out just as amazing as any boy like yourself. Bucky, Sergeant Barnes is a respectable hero for our country, alright?” she chastised, lowering herself to Brian’s height.

Brain’s smug grin fell, as he looked at Poppy and apologized. “Alright. Now the two of you are going to shake hands and make friends alright.” she instructed.

Her daughter’s teacher gave her a grateful smile and thanked her, “You’re a life saver (Y/N). You should’ve joined us as a parent volunteer.” “If I had the time I really wouldn’t mind but you know how it is over at Stark Industries.” she replied, a resigned smile on her face.

Hearing her name, Bucky perked up and narrowed his eyes to get a better look at her. (Y/N)? Stark Industries? Could it be Pepper’s PA? That (Y/N)? Bucky’s always paid extra attention to her. Despite no one noticing it. Or perhaps Nat knew but just didn’t want to call him out on it. She did always have this knowing smirk on her face. (Y/N) always had this lovely smile on her face that made her eyes disappear into a cute crescent.

People mostly left Bucky alone. But not (Y/N). If she baked during the weekends, she always made sure to give him a couple of the treats she made. If he was coming back from a mission, she would always be there waiting. Well, she may have been waiting for anyone. Nat. Wanda. Steve. Thor. God forbid, Sam. But it always warmed his heart a little seeing her tiny figure from afar.

He knew the (Y/N) was a single mom. Her bastard of a boyfriend left once he knew she was expecting. She also knew she had to juggle a lot, there were even a couple of times Nat helped pick her daughter from pre-school when she was occupied with work.

As Bucky looked over, he saw that (Y/N) was holding on to her daughter’s hand, arms swaying as they walked towards the exit. He didn’t know what came over him, his shy demeanour that he acquired over time, vanished as he took large steps to the pair.

(Y/N) noticed his figure and a look of shock appeared on her face when she figures out who it was. He gave her a shy smile as he kneeled next to Poppy.

“Hi. You’re Poppy, right? I’m Bucky. Your mom’s fr-“ Bucky started. Before he could continue, Poppy let out an excited squeal and jumped into his arms.

“You’re The Winter Soldier! Sergeant Barnes! Can I really call you Bucky?” she babbled on, her tiny arms wrapped around Bucky. He couldn’t help but let out a hearty chuckle at her excitement as he returned her hug light.

“Of course you can Pumpkin. Please feel free to call me anything,” he replied, eyes meeting (Y/N)’s, her smile evident on her face as she laughed at her daughter’s antics.

“Oooooooo. How about Buckaroo? Bucky Bear? Cuddly Bucky? Big Barnes?” she listed name off her head, still not letting Bucky go. An affectionate chuckle escaped Bucky, as he scooped the young girl up, Poppy still happily listing out nicknames for the super soldier.

“You heading back to the office? Do you mind if I carry her the way back?” Bucky asked softly, his cheeks, a faint red.

(Y/N) laughed softly and said, “I don’t think she’s going to let you go anytime soon. You’re her hero you know?”

Bucky’s cheeks flushed a deeper red, as he awkwardly scratches the back of his head.

“Well, she’s my hero.”
