Clearly I have wayyy too much time on my hands!

When pathologist Amy Rapkiewicz began the grim process of opening up the coronavirus dead to learn how their bodies went awry, she found damage to the lungs, kidneys and liver consistent with what doctors had reported for months.

But something was off.

Rapkiewicz, who directs autopsies at NYU Langone Health, noticed that some organs had far too many of a special cell rarely found in those places. She had never seen that before, yet it seemed vaguely familiar. She raced to her history books and — in a eureka moment — found a reference to 1960s report on a patient with dengue fever.

In dengue, a mosquito-borne tropical disease, she learned, the virus appeared to destroy these cells, which produce platelets, leading to uncontrolled bleeding. The novel coronavirus seemed to amplify their effect, causing dangerous clotting.

She was struck by the parallels: “Covid-19 and dengue sound really different, but the cells that are involved are similar.”

Autopsies have long been a source of breakthroughs in understanding new diseases, from HIV/AIDS and Ebola to Lassa fever — and the medical community is counting on them to do the same for covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. With a vaccine probably many months away in even the most optimistic scenarios, autopsies are becoming a critical source of information for research into possible treatments.

When the pandemic hit the United States in late March, many hospital systems were too overwhelmed trying to save lives to spend too much time delving into the secrets of the dead. But by late May and June, the first large batch of reports — from patients ranging in age from 32 to 90 years who died at a half-dozen institutions — were published in quick succession. The investigations have confirmed some of our early hunches of the disease, refuted others — and opened up new mysteries about the pathogen that has killed more than 500,000 people worldwide.

Among the most important findings, consistent across several studies, is confirmation the virus appears to attack the lungs the most ferociously. They also found the pathogen in parts of the brain, kidneys, liver, gastrointestinal tract and spleen and in the endothelial cells that line blood vessels, as some had previously suspected. Researchers also found widespread clotting in many organs.

But the brain and heart yielded surprises.

“It’s about what we are not seeing,” said Mary Fowkes, an associate professor of pathology who is part of a team at Mount Sinai Health that has performed autopsies on 67 covid-19 patients.

Given widespread reports about neurological symptoms related to the coronavirus, Fowkes said, she expected to find virus or inflammation — or both — in the brain. But there was very little. When it comes to the heart, many physicians warned for months about a cardiac complication they suspected was myocarditis, an inflammation or hardening of the heart muscle walls — but autopsy investigators were stunned that they could find no evidence of the condition.

Another unexpected finding, pathologists said, is that oxygen deprivation of the brain and the formation of blood clots may start early in the disease process. That could have major implications for how people with covid-19 are treated at home, even if they never need to be hospitalized.

The early findings come as new U.S. infections have overtaken even the catastrophic days of April, amid what some critics say is a premature easing of social distancing restrictions in some states, mainly in the South and West. A new modeling study has estimated that about 22 percent of the population — or 1.7 billion people worldwide, including 72 million in the United States — may be vulnerable to severe illness if infected with the virus. According to the analysis published this month in Lancet Global Health, about 4 percent of those people would require hospitalization — underscoring the stakes as autopsy investigators continue their hunt for clues.

Microclots in lungs

At their best, autopsies can reconstruct the natural course of the disease, but the process for a new and highly infectious disease is tedious and requires meticulous work. To protect pathologists and avoid sending virus into the air, they must use special tools to harvest organs and then dunk them in a disinfecting solution for several weeks before they are studied. They must then section each organ and collect small bits of tissue for study under different types of microscopes.

One of the first American investigations to be made public, on April 10, was out of New Orleans. The patient was a 44-year-old man who had been treated at LSU Health. Richard Vander Heide remembers cutting the lung and discovering what were probably hundreds or thousands of microclots.

“I will never forget the day,” recalled Vander Heide, who has been performing autopsies since 1994. “I said to the resident, ‘This is very unusual.’ I had never seen something like this.”

But as he moved onto the next patient and the next, Vander Heide saw the same pattern. He was so alarmed, he said, that he shared the paper online before submitting it to a journal so the information could be used immediately by doctors. The findings caused a stir at many hospitals and influenced some doctors to start giving blood thinners to all covid-19 patients. It is now common practice. The final, peer-reviewed version involving 10 patients was subsequently published in the Lancet in May.

Other lung autopsies — including those described in papers from Italy of 38 patients, a Mount Sinai Health study on 25 patients, a collaboration between Harvard Medical School and German researchers on seven and an NYU Langone Health study on seven — have reported similar findings of clotting.

Most recently, a study out last month in the Lancet’s eClinicalMedicine, found abnormal clotting in the heart, kidney and liver, as well as the lungs of seven patients, leading the authors to suggest this may be a major cause of the multiple-organ failure in covid-19 patients.

Heart cells

The next organ studied up close was the heart. One of the most frightening early reports about the coronavirus from China was that a significant percentage of hospitalized patients — up to 20 to 30 percent — appeared to have myocarditis that could lead to sudden death. The condition involves the thickening of the muscle of the heart so that it can no longer pump efficiently.

Classic myocarditis is typically easy to identify in autopsies, pathologists say. It occurs when the body perceives the tissue to be foreign and attacks it. In that situation, there would be large dead zones in the heart, and the muscle cells known as myocytes would be surrounded by infection-fighting cells known as lymphocytes. But in the autopsy samples taken so far, the dead myocytes were not surrounded by lymphocytes — leaving researchers scratching their heads.

Fowkes, from Mount Sinai, and her colleague, Clare Bryce, whose work on 25 hearts has been published online but not yet peer reviewed, said they saw some “very mild” inflammation of the surface of the heart but nothing that looked like myocarditis.

NYU Langone’s Rapkiewicz, who studied seven hearts, was struck by the abundance in the heart of rare cells called megakaryocytes. The cells, which produce platelets that control clotting, typically exist only in the bone marrow and lungs. When she went back to the lung samples from the coronavirus patients, she discovered those cells were too plentiful there, too.

“I could not remember a case before where we saw that,” she said. “It was remarkable they were in the heart.”

Vander Heide, from LSU, who reported preliminary findings on 10 patients in April and has a more in-depth paper with more case studies under review at a journal, explained that “when you look at a covid heart, you don’t see what you’d expect.”

He said a couple of patients he performed autopsies on had gone into cardiac arrest in the hospital, but when he examined them, the primary damage was in the lungs — not the heart.

Brain grid

Of all the coronavirus’s manifestations, its impact on the brain has been among the most vexing. Patients have reported a host of neurological impairments, including reduced ability to smell or taste, altered mental status, stroke, seizures — even delirium.

An early study from China, published in the BMJ, formerly the British Medical Journal, in March, found 22 percent of the 113 patients had experienced neurological issues ranging from excessive sleepiness to coma — conditions typically grouped together as disorders of consciousness. In June, researchers in France reported that 84 percent of patients in intensive care had neurological problems, and a third were confused or disoriented at discharge. Also this month, those in the United Kingdom found that 57 of 125 coronavirus patients with a new neurological or psychiatric diagnosis had experienced a stroke due to a blood clot in the brain, and 39 had an altered mental state.

Based on such data and anecdotal reports, Isaac Solomon, a neuropathologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, set out to systematically investigate where the virus might be embedding itself in the brain. He conducted autopsies of 18 consecutive deaths, taking slices of key areas: the cerebral cortex (the gray matter responsible for information processing), thalamus (modulates sensory inputs), basal ganglia (responsible for motor control) and others. Each was divided into a three-dimensional grid. Ten sections were taken from each and studied.

He found snippets of virus in only some areas, and it was unclear whether they were dead remnants or active virus when the patient died. There were only small pockets of inflammation. But there were large swaths of damage due to oxygen deprivation. Whether the deceased were longtime intensive care patients or people who died suddenly, Solomon said, the pattern was eerily similar.

“We were very surprised,” he said.

When the brain does not get enough oxygen, individual neurons die, and that death is permanent. To a certain extent, people’s brains can compensate, but at some point, the damage is so extensive that different functions start to degrade.

On a practical level, Solomon said, if the virus is not getting into the brain in large amounts, that helps with drug development because treatment becomes trickier when it is pervasive, for instance, in some patients with West Nile or HIV. Another takeaway is that the findings underscore the importance of getting people on supplementary oxygen quickly to prevent irreversible damage.

Solomon, whose work was published as a June 12 letter in the New England Journal of Medicine, said the findings suggest the damage had been happening over a longer period of time, which makes him wonder about the virus’s effect on people who are less ill. “The big lingering question is what happens to people who survive covid,” he said. “Is there a lingering effect on the brain?”

The team from Mount Sinai Health, which took tissue findings from 20 brains, was also perplexed not to find a lot of virus or inflammation. However, the group noted in a paper that the widespread presence of tiny clots was “striking.”

“If you have one blood clot in the brain, we see that all the time. But what we’re seeing is, some patients are having multiple strokes in blood vessels that are in two or even three different territories,” Fowkes said.

Rapkiewicz said it is too early to know whether the newest batch of autopsy findings can be translated into treatment changes, but the information has opened new avenues to explore. One of her first calls after noticing the unusual platelet-producing cells was to Jeffrey Berger, a cardiac specialist at NYU who runs a National Institutes of Health-funded lab that focuses on platelets.

Berger said the autopsies suggest anti-platelet medications, in addition to blood thinners, may be helpful to stem the effects of covid-19. He has pivoted a major clinical trial looking at optimal doses of blood thinners to examine that question as well.

“It’s only one piece of a very big puzzle, and we have a lot more to learn,” he said. “But if we can prevent significant complications and if more patients can survive the infection, that changes everything.”

Set It Up

Set It Up is Netflix’s most accomplished original romantic comedy yet.

Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell star as overworked assistants Harper and Charlie. Harper is an assistant to Kirsten (Lucy Liu) the woman behind a sports media empire. Charlie works for finance maven Rick (Taye Diggs). Harper and Charlie realize that their respective workloads might lesson if their bosses were more focused on their love life and less focused on work. So they…set them up.

Set It Up is a fun, novel high-concept romance movie positively filled with chemistry on all sides.

Outside In

We embrace every kind of love on our list of the best romance movies. Sometimes that includes some questionable, and some would say “icky” kind of love. So…Outside In is a teacher-student romance. But don’t panic! It’s ok.

Jay Duplas stars as Chris, a man who was wrongly imprisoned at age 18 and who is relased at age 38. When Chris is released, he immediately meets up with his old high school teacher, Carol (Edie Falco), who was his penpal when he was in prison. He wastes little time before he declares his love for her.

Despite its subject matter, Outside In is a mature, well-handled exploration of love and what it means to love someone for themselves as opposed to what they do for us.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

With a name as long as The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, the movie better be good to justify how many times we poor cultural commenters must type it out. Thankfully Guernsey is quite good!

Based on a book by the same name, Guernsey is a historical love story set in 1946. Lily James stars as British writer Juliet Ashton. Juliet begins exchanging letters with residents of the islands of Guernsey, which was under German occupation in WWII (so like two years before the movie starts). While there she meets the dashing Dawsey Adams (Michael Huisman) and romance begins to blossom.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is an excellent, watchable classical romance

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before

Oh hey! Another Netflix original with a long title based on a book. Like the Potato Peel Pie Society, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is another effortlessly enjoyable romantic romp – this time of the teen variety.

Lara Jean Song Covey (Laura Condor) experiences every young person’s nightmare when private love letters to five boys she has or has had crushes on suddenly and mysteriously become public. But fear not. This is a romance movie, not a horror movie. So this sudden reveal has to go well for Lara Jean, right? RIGHT?!?

The To All the Boys team returns for a sequel that teaches kids the harsh lesson that there’s no such thing as happily ever after! OK, so that’s a bit harsh, but To All the Boys P.S. I Still Love You does bring back its characters for another round of romantic angst.

The Danish Girl

2015’s The Danish Girl tells the story of a kind of love nearly unprecedented for its early 20th century time. Eddie Redmayne stars as artist Lili Elbe, who was born Einar Wegener and is believed to be one of the first individuals to receive sexual reassignment surgery. The film follows Lili’s journey and her love with wife Gerda Wegener (Alicia Vikander).

When Gerda asks her husband to stand in for a female subject in her painting, Einar does so and quickly comes to terms with the gender identity he’s been suppressing. The newly confirmed Lili and Gerda navigate this new dimension of their relationship and Lili continues her work as a subject for Gerda’s now very much in demand paintings.

Beauty and the Beast

2017’s live-action version of Beauty and the Beast isn’t the best depiction of the classic fairy tale ever but that’s ok. It doesn’t have to be. All Bill Condon’s Beauty and the Beast really needed to be was a fun little dip into nostalgia with sumptuous visuals and a believable romance. On that front, everything goes according to plan.

50 First Dates

50 First Dates has a somewhat disappointing Rotten Tomatoes score. Ignore that. It’s probably partially due to many critics’ distaste for at least one of the actors in the above screengrab. Not that they can be blamed. The presence of Adam Sandler or Rob Schneider in any comedy is rarely a good sign. In 50 First Dates‘, however, it’s not an issue at all.

50 First Dates is a legitimately funny and romantic romantic comedy. Drew Barrymore stars as Lucy Whitmore, a woman with short-term memory loss. Due to a car accident, every day she wakes up believing it is October 13, 2002. Sandler’s character Henry Roth meets her in Hawaii and the two must overcome this bizarre condition to establish a lasting relationship.

Carol

Todd Haynes, director of Carol and Far From Heaven knows longing. And if there’s an element that makes for an excellent romantic movie experience its longing. That desperate sense is baked into nearly every frame of Carol. Based on a 1950s romance novel, Carol is the story of a young photographer (Rooney Mara) and an older woman going through a divorce (Cate Blanchette) undertaking a forbidden affair.

Forbidden because, you know, ’50s. And that’s where the longing comes in. Nothing is more romantic or sexier than a forbidden romance. Carol channels that romantic energy into something mature, fascinating and heartbreaking.

Silver Linings Playbook

Silver Linings Playbook is all about how generally terrible it is to be a Philadelphia Eagles fan. OK, fine – it’s only a little bit about that. This star-studded 2012 film from David O. Russell is more about the challenges in finding love when one isn’t sure they even love themselves.

Bradley Cooper stars as Pat Solitano Jr., a young man with bipolar disorder living with his parents after being released from a psychiatric hospital. Pat is determined to win back his ex-wife and to that end enlists the help of young widower Tiffany Maxwell (Jennifer Lawrence). The two become closer as they train for an upcoming dance competition and share their respective damages with one another.

Silver Linings Playbook works because Lawrence and Cooper have a real crackling chemistry. And they both just happen to be devastatingly, almost supernaturally attractive.

Runaway Bride

From stars Richard Gere and Julia Roberts to director Garry Marshall to conspicuous usage of enormous cell phones – Runaway Bride is an intensely ’90s film. And to the rightly organized mind, that just makes it the platonic ideal of a low-stress romantic comedy.

Roberts stars as Maggie Carpenter, an alluring young woman who has made a habit of leaving multiple fiancé’s at the altar. Gere is Ike Graham, a New York columnist seeking to tell the definitive story of this “runaway bride.” Runaway Bride is a charming experience that will make you think long and hard about how you really like your eggs prepared.

Loving

It feels reductive to call Loving a “romance” movie, as its more of a historical exploration of the very real, very tragic legacy of American racism. At its center, however, the film is about love.

Loving tells the story of Richard (Joel Edgerton) and Mildred Loving (Ruth Negga), a mixed-race Virginia couple challenging their state’s law against interracial marriage in the Supreme Court. The details of the Lovings struggle for basic human rights are astonishing. Edgerton and Negga’s empathetic performances make sure the film never loses sight of the humanity at play amid all the legal drama.

Always Be My Maybe

Everyone always talks about “the one who got away”, but what about “the one who was always kind of around”? 2019’s Always Be My Maybe tells of one such story.

Ali Wong (who wrote the film) stars as Sasha Tran and Randall Park stars as Marcus Kim. Marcus and Sasha grew up next door to each other and also embarked on a brief, ill-fated relationship in their teenage years. When Sasha returns to San Francisco to open a restaurant, she discovers that romantic energy remains between her and Marcus. But is that enough to spark love in the busy, chaotic adult world?

Always Be My Maybe has a lot to say about family and growth. It also features a truly winning performance from Keanu Reeves playing…Keanu Reeves.

The Kissing Booth

There’s an interesting dynamic at play in teenage romantic comedies. Oftentimes, the worse they are, the more watchable (and rewatchable) they become. The Kissing Booth is a prime example. Based on a book by the same name from Beth Reekles, The Kissing Booth isn’t exactly celebrated for its realistic portrayal of American teenagers.

Thanks to charming lead performances from Joey King, Jacob Elordi, and Joel Courtney, however, that doesn’t really matter. The Kissing Booth is all about how one girl’s first kiss turns into an emotional minefield of teen angst. That alone is enough to support 105 minutes of pure high school drama…and two sequels!

Reacting To: Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts (Season 2 Episode 5)

Episode Title: Fun Gus Part 1

Spoiler Warning: Kindly proceed if you’ve already seen the episode or are able to handle spoilers.

1. Just like last episode, this particular one begins with a flashback and this time, it’s Kipo’s parents, Song and Lio Oak whom are climbing up a building with tree roots along its walls. The reach the top and they’re amazed by the view of Las Vistas and the different kinds of mutes living there. Song looks almost exactly like Kipo; Only less...pink.

2. Song has figured out a way to reverse the effects of the mutation in the mutes. And we find out that Hugo aka Scarlemagne was one of the mutes she’s basing her research on! So that explains the supposed backstory between Lio and Scarlemagne we’ve detected in previous episodes.

3. Also, the reason why they’re there in the surface world is to find out more information about the mutes and how to turn them back to normal. However, both Song and Lio don’t agree with their team’s plans and they decide to hide Song’s research findings from them, especially after discovering that Hugo is able to say her name. Now I’m really curious as to why Hugo ended up becoming so anti-human. I guess it’s due to him seeing how humans have been treating animals over the years or something.

4. I just find their interactions to be absolutely precious. They’re also planning to stay on the surface for as long as they can.

5. We’re now back to the present and we see Super Dave carrying his friends over a couple of blocks without molting (I never knew this word till now). They notice that Dave has been able to prolong the very form he’s in, far longer than before.

6. Kipo tells the group that they’re almost at her parents old burrow and she also can’t wait to possibly find out more things about her mom. I’m beginning to wonder if she really died from burrow pox or not? Anyways, Kipo pulls out the map given to her by Cappuccino and it looks like they need to pass through one last checkpoint, a cheese waterfall.

7. They are suddenly interrupted by the water mute Mulholland (from last season), who came through a fire hydrant lol. He’s obviously not welcomed by them, especially after what he did to them before.

8. At Scarlemagne’s Court, we see the representatives from the 4 pro-Scarlemagne mute groups including the Mod Frogs, Scooter Skunks, Humming Bomber and Newton Wolves entering his residence and being in awe of the place. He wants them to “sing” to him where they think the Mega Monkey might be. Kwat, the Mod Frog sings to him, revealing that it’s in Cactus Town. Because of that, she gets first dibs on a luxury home in the work-in-progress city of Aurum.

9. To my surprise, Scarlemagne reveals that he will be going on the hunt for the Mega Monkey. I gotta say; I do like a pro-active super-villain. We shift things over to the ever-mysterious cloaked individuals who are rushing over to find the Mega Monkey by following an ant trail (because monkeys eats ants?) before Scarlemagne can. But we do find out one of their names: Greta.

10. They spot Scarlemagne and his crew flying through the sky and carrying the mind-control collar for the monkey. So, they need to hurry. I’m starting to think that they’re just humans; I mean look at those eyes.

11. Back to Mulholland; He reveals to them that he is now a travelling nomad or nomads and that Kipo is going to find what she’s looking for. He then leaves. That was certainly random. Anyways, they now seem to be near that cheese waterfall place because they finally arrive at the entrance of her parents burrow and there’s cheese everywhere. Correction. FUNGUS everywhere...eww and it moves too. Despite finding the burrow, they still need to find her parents’ apartment.

12. Next, we see the three cloaked individuals riding on a giant dragonfly and tailing behind Scarlemagne and the Nobles. Can the show just tell us who these people are? I’m kinda tired of referring to them as the “cloaked individuals” lol. All of a sudden, a high-pitched sound appears out of nowhere, causing everyone to fall from the sky. It turns out to be the doing of the Umlaut snakes. Looks like these guys are going to take on Scarlemagne but they’re probably not going to beat him I think.

13. Kipo discovers that her parents’ old burrow used to be inhabited by a group of scientists, including her parents of course. They then realize that the apartments are arranged in alphabetical order and they make their way over to the O side to find the Oak’s apartment. Oh and Dave is now in his elderly form after being scared by the fungus creature or whatever. And he is the only one who’s noticing that the orange fungus is moving.

14. Because humans aren’t as sensitive to sound compared to mutes, Scarlemagne orders his human Nobles to destroy the snakes’ equipment. Scarlemagne orders his followers to attack and the scene cuts off. I’m actually worried about the snakes; I hope they are gonna be alright.

15. The gang is inside the apartment and they’re going through some of their things like their bed, kitchenware and Kipo’s old baby clothes to which she is keeping one of them. Kipo then notices drawings of constellations on their ceiling and points out that the Leo constellation has an extra star, which is actually just a button that opens up a secret panel.

16. The panel reveals a book with the title, “Project Kipo”. She grabs it and starts browsing through it. To sum up what she read, it’s basically about combining Kipo’s DNA with the DNA of apex predators like the jaguar. Other apex predators include the falcon, monkey and Komodo dragon. So this explains in scientific detail why Kipo is their “hybrid-baby”. As a Biochemistry graduate, I find the incorporation of recombinant DNA technology in the story-lines of cartoons to be exciting.

17. Again, I like how Kipo isn’t upset at her parents in any capacity for pretty much making her their science experiment. I’d probably be angry but then again, I’m not Kipo lol. Meanwhile, Dave is freaking out because he saw a face on the wall and calls out for Benson to come over. But yet again, nothing happens when anybody but Dave (and Mandu) shows up to check it out.

18. As Kipo goes further into her reading, we get more flashbacks of Song and Lio in that same apartment. Pretty much this book is also Song’s journal/diary it seems. Song comes home to reveal that she’s pregnant with Kipo and Lio is overwhelmed with joy. Aww, this is sooo adorable. I’m getting chills. They are such goals.

19. After reading the part about the pregnancy, Kipo obviously gets very emotional, in a good way. And she, Wolf and Benson get into a group hug. The love fest is short-lived, however, because Dave is still freaking out about the “ghosts”. Benson gets annoyed and shouts at him and tells him to molt into someone more fun. This hurts Dave’s feelings and he plus Mandu walk away. But suddenly, the fungus mute/creature shows up on the wall again with a face this time and it also has the voice of a toddler. It then grabs hold of both of them and drags them through the wall. That was way spooky.

20. Whilst the snakes are fighting off Scarlemagne’s minions, the cloaked individuals are using this opportunity to grab the giant collar and take it away from Scarlemagne’s reach. The leader of the cloaked group heads inside the den where the Mega Monkey is sleeping. Now I’m thinking that these individuals are human beings because she said “for the future of humanity”. After thinking through it some more, I predict that they were Lio and Song’s old scientist colleagues.

21. Why didn’t Kipo, Wolf or Benson hear what was going on outside the apartment?; They need to get their ears checked. Kipo is still focused on the book and she reads that her mom was making kimchi and peanut butter. As she’s opening the jar, she accidentally breaks the entire jar without any effort. She seems to have super-strength as a side effect and she grew fur on her arm earlier, revealing to all of us that she’s a Mega Jaguar too. Therefore, I’m pretty sure her mom’s not dead. But if that’s the case, why d id Lio lie to Kipo for all her life about her mom dying from an illness?

22. After getting all excited by this discovery, the fungus mute steals the journal (which should be Kipo’s anchor) from her. And the episode ends here.

23. I absolutely loved this episode. I liked being able to see the past interactions between Lio and Song through Kipo reading Song’s journal. Stay tuned tomorrow for when I will be posting my review of episode 6. Thanks for reading everyone! Bye!

The Outside: Chapter 52

Series Ask Blog: @asktheoutside Oof. I’m glad I had this chapter done ahead of time. :/ I’m sick and feel like crap today and really don’t want to do any writing. Also, I think you’ve been waiting for this chapter for a while. :)

Chapter 52: Uncovered Chapter Warnings: Swearing

March 18, 2031, 12:00 PM Los Angeles, California

Jacques pulled at the collar of his ill-fitted shirt with his free hand, the other clutching his sketchbook tight against his chest. Within were the sketches he was going to be reviewing with Bing; the android wanted to see if he could help uncover the identities of the people Jacques had run into at Marlow’s.

It hadn’t been Jacques’s idea. At all. He would have rather stayed at their motel, hunkered down under his covers. It almost made him regret bringing up the…were they Egos? Figments, he’d say, just in case. As far as he knew, they were lesser Figments. A part of him wished he hadn’t mentioned it to Silver. He wanted nothing to do with the other Septics, but going to Bing’s home would get him face-to-face with three of them. Fucking wonderful.

The hand that had been at his neck flashed toward the handle above his head as the van bounced over a speed bump. He offered Mark a glare into the rear-view, but the man had his eyes trained on the busy street and never noticed. Silver sat quietly in the front seat, hands fiddling together and eyes occasionally flicking to the mirror as if to make sure Jacques was all right. Roxanne had stayed with Amy and Chica at the Fischbach’s place. At least it was quiet.

Jacques lowered his sketchbook into his lap; flipped through the pages until getting to the newest ones. Natemare was the only one he was sure of. His image completely redrawn after one of those fuckers at the cafe had torn the original out. Then there was the security guard, the man in the baseball cap, the corporate-looking woman, and the android. And Jacques knew the guy was an android. He had to be.

He’d also learned that the “Iffy” guy at Marlow’s was not only the owner, but Infelix. That was…wonderful news. Jacques had been ticked with Silver for not telling him, even if it was the artist’s fault for not wanting to hear the Iplier whenever he’d tried to bring it up.

There was even a picture of Ed in there. While the artist could care less if the cowboy wound up killed, he really wanted to know what the hell had happened; if that had really been Ed, or someone pretending to be him.

He glanced up when the van pulled to a stop, jolting its passengers when it hit the too-high curb with its front tire.

All three clamored out, Jacques’s foot catching and only Silver grabbing his arm keeping him from face-planting into the sidewalk. He grumbled and shrugged the superhero off when he had his footing, hugging his book close once it was flipped shut. His eyes scanned the complex; four two-story homes in a single building. Duplexes, that’s what they were called, right? The one to catch his eye was the second from the left, a wheelchair ramp leading up to the door rather than stairs like the other three homes. The previous couple to live there had apparently been elderly, with one confined to a chair.

Someone was sitting on the ramp and waving them down. Jacques didn’t know which of them it was. Certainly not Bing, right? But did any of them wear glasses? Bing always wore sunglasses, but glasses glasses? They were thick-framed and black; the guy’s gold-brown eyes tracking the trio as they made their way up the walk to the ramp, and stood when they started their way up it.

“You’ve got the pics?” he asked. His eyes found Jacques’s sketchbook, and the artist curled his fingers around it possessively even as he nodded.

“Bing?” So it was Bing. The android lifted his gaze to his creator, brow arched. “Where’s everyone else?”

A shrug. “Yan and Sophie’re upstairs, Chase at the library with Anti, Jimmy’s on a run with Ky, and…y’know, I don’t know where Jim and James are. With the kids, maybe?” A crash from above their heads followed by laughter from three sources confirmed that theory. Jacques had to wonder what had happened. Jim tripping, probably.

“Crowded…” the artist mumbled. There were seriously that many people in a small, four-bedroom home? At least he wouldn’t have to talk with any of the Septics.

When the door was closed and locked, Bing pulled his glasses off. His eyes immediately brightened and started glowing like they always had, and Jacques could only narrow his own. What the fuck?

“Jacques.” Bing was cutting toward a desk off in the corner of the living room, dragging a kitchen chair behind him. “Could take a while, so you wanna grab anything from the fridge?”

A shake of the head and the artist ducked around Silver; casting the hero a harsh glare when he opened his mouth as if to say something. He found himself settling into the cushy desk chair as Bing swapped it for the one from the kitchen. Why Bing opted for the stiff wooden one and let Jacques take the comfortable one, he wasn’t sure. But eh. Whatever.

“So how many were there?” the android asked. He was getting the laptop started up so wasn’t actually looking at the artist. His core was humming softly, fingers tapping at the desk as he waited for the laptop to boot up.

Flipping his book open, Jacques stopped on the hyper-realistic image of the security guard and tapped a spot on the page not stained by graphite. “Four. That is not counting Natemare and Ed.” He felt eyes on the back of his head, and it took everything he had not to curl into himself. He didn’t know if it was Mark or Silver, or if someone from upstairs had come down, but he hated it. “You think you can find who they are?”

Bing was opening tabs; connecting a cord to his wrist and the device with his free hand. A second was already snaking from the back of his neck into a different USB port on the laptop. “If they’re documented. I’m hopin’ to at least figure out their aliases and jobs. The more we know so we can avoid ‘em, the better.” When the android turned to face him, Jacques perked up a little. “Let’s see Natemare first. We’ll start with him.”

Jacques went back two pages from the guard and held his sketchbook out a little. When Bing went to take it, however, his grip tightened and he pulled it closer. Uneasiness knotted his chest at the thought of handing it over. His fingers curled around the pages and into the spiraling binder.

The focused expression on the android’s face softened and he moved his hands away and onto the keyboard. “All right,” he murmured. His voice was soft; as if speaking to a frightened child. “I’m not gonna take it. But you wanna hold it up a little? I need a good scan of his face.”

Jacques felt himself relaxing. Bing wasn’t going to take his sketchbook. He just…needed to look. You’re too possessive, he thought. Relax. Work with Bing. Not against him. Figure this out. He swallowed, lessened his grip on the book, and brought it back up so Bing’s bright stare could scan over the image.

When the android nodded and turned away, Jacques shifted closer to watch the screen. Bing’s hands were flashing over the keyboard, pages upon pages flickering across the screen far faster than the artist could keep up with. Images and colors changing so fast it made him dizzy to watch for too long. He found himself blinking rapidly and shaking his head; looking to the android’s face instead. He was leaning in close to the screen, unbothered by the flashing colors. Jacques had to wonder if Bing was even seeing what was on the screen, or if the connections to his wrist and neck were sending everything straight to his head.

A chittering sound left the android, head tilting. It reminded Jacques of a fucking bird. He started clicking as he perked up. He looked…excited.

“Nathaniel Thompson!” he shouted.

Jacques about jumped out of his skin from the startle Bing’s static-laced words caused.

“Sorry. Sorry.” Bing lowered his voice back to a respectable level and added, “That’s his alias: Nathaniel Thompson. He’s a wanted criminal; works for this ‘Devon Ripley’ guy in a fuckin’ gang, and Ed’s been seen with ‘em, too. Not often, but still. You see either of ‘em again, you get the hell outta there.”

A shake of the head and Bing gestured for Jacques to turn the page; he turned to the security guard’s drawing.

There was another bout of silence, but it didn’t take as long to pull up his information; Jacques figured Bing was running matches for all of them at once to make that find so fast. Wouldn’t surprise him.

“His name’s Michael Garring. Okay, so this dude’s a security guard at the Los Angeles Mall,” he started, zooming in on the guy in the first staff picture he came across. “But get this…” He clicked on another tab, and Jacques leaned away when Mark and Silver came up behind them to look. He didn’t like how they stood behind him and hunched into himself. “He’s only part-time there. He’s also a security guard at a small-business hunting place on the other side of town from the mall. The owner is also the only one to run the tills and upkeep the shop. Literally his only hire is this guard to act as fuckin’ bouncer.”

Bing turned to the artist and gestured to his sketchbook. “Let’s see the dude with the hoodie.”

Nodding and flipping through the pages, Jacques stopped on the man with the shrouded face. There were very few details he’d caught on that man. Even in the detailed drawing his face was covered in shadow and without detail to look far too flat against the rest of the image. Bing wasn’t looking at the man’s face, though; he was pointing at his hands. The hands that looked like they’d gotten into a fight with a fucking blender. He then pointed out the cap and hoodie; both with the vague shapes of whatever logos Jacques had seen briefly. Some sort of cat head, he’d thought.

“Judgin’ by the guy’s hands and the logos, this’s the same guy to own the hunting place Michael works at.”

He pulled up an image of the owner, and Jacques grimaced. His hands might have looked like they got stuck in a blender, but his face? It looked like something or someone had taken a blade to it. Multiple times. It was a miracle that whatever had caused those scars hadn’t touched his eyes considering how close not one, but two of the marks were; jagged and pale against tanned skin, the hair wherever they met with it refusing the grow back. He looked annoyed; like a little kid who hadn’t wanted their picture taken, stare cold as it looked into the camera.

“That is…good reason to cover his face…” the artist murmured.

Mark leaned forward, placing a hand on the back of Jacques’s chair and making it tilt back far enough the Septic thought it would fall backwards. It didn’t, but it sure felt like it was going to! “What’s his shop called?”

Bing shook his head. “I was gettin’ to that.” When he looked directly at the Septic, Jacques found himself furrowing his brows. “I hope to hell his name seems familiar to you, ‘cause I think I know who he is.”

Leaning back toward the laptop, Bing went back to the shop’s homepage: Angus’s Hunting and Tackle.

“…Angus Hunter,” Jacques read. “But…it is not possible? He was not canon!”

“Technically, neither were you,” Bing said. “And I’m bettin’ this is the Hunter Infelix told us about.” A shake of the head, and Bing turned back to the computer. “So this Hunter guy, I don’t know if he’s tracking us down or if he’ll just be keepin’ an eye out for us. Either way, not good. What we need to figure out is if the rest of ‘em are Egos.”

“Wait.” Mark held up a hand, and Jacques felt a pang of annoyance. “You’re brushing this Angus guy off like you all know who he is. So..?”

“Angus the Survival Hunter. Seán’s first Ego; that’s if he is who we think he is. I uh…don’t think any of us even knew the guy was real?” Jacques and Silver both shook their heads. “And if he was, we figured he’d faded long before the other Septics came along.”

“He was from Seán’s Far Cry series when he was new to YouTube,” Jacques added. “We…did not think our creator was popular enough back then for an Ego to come alive. But…if this is Angus…”

“It explains why he never showed up in our plane when he did start gettin’ popular. I’ll bet he’s been out here a long time. And I’m not gonna be surprised in the fuckin’ slightest if he’s bitter as hell with the populars.” Jacques felt Bing’s gaze fall on him with that last statement, but he dropped his own; refusing to meet the android’s eyes.

“And… And the others?” Mark asked. His voice was halting; almost like he was afraid to find out who any of the others were.

It didn’t take Bing long to pull up an image of the corporate woman. “Jane Wolffe.” He raised a brow at his creator when Mark spluttered. “Yeah. I’m thinkin’ that too. And I thought our aliases were uncreative? ‘Yeah, I’m just gonna…name myself after exactly what I am!’ Gonna have to do some digging to find her job ‘cause everything so far’s pretty vague. And the android’s Beau Garring. Says here he’s Michael’s ‘adopted’ brother. I call fuckin’ bullshit. I’m not findin’ much else on him, though…”

At that point, Bing was rambling and slowly shifting back into the androids’ language; clicking and whirring in ways they couldn’t understand. Jacques was half-convinced all the new information had broken him.

The artist leaned in to look at Jane’s image on the screen, then turned to Mark. He didn’t…understand. Why was she such a big deal? “Who is..?”

Silver’s eyes were scanning the picture of the woman even as he answered in his creator’s stead, “Mark was in a skit called ‘Werewolves’ a long time ago. Jane…uh. Well, she was one of the wolves in it.”

Swallowing around the lump in his throat, Jacques closed his book and hugged it close to his chest. Anxiety was bubbling up in his chest as he held it close. “So…so we have a security guard…a werewolf…an android…a-and…the fucking Survival Hunter himself out here, possibly tracking us? That is…fucking wonderful...”

Jet ‘s Chang Mo-Kei’s kung fu has been struck by the Jinx Palm, blocking his chi, destroying his ability to perform kung fu and causing him to need constant infusions of chi from Taoist priest Chang San-Fung (Sammo Hung). But Chang can only be cured by a massive infusion of yang energy, which he receives after falling off a cliff and meets a hermit chained to a bolder who teaches him the Great Solar Stance to get back at the hermit’s own enemies. Afterwards, Chang is super-skilled and learns kung fu with the ease of Jet Li. Then things get crazy with everybody flying and chi all over the place, a Mongol princess, the King of Green Bat, all the martial arts schools fighting each other, hundreds of people running around with flags, the not-evil Evil Cult, Hermit Chained to a Boulder Fist. And then, as it gets to the big end fight, it just stops, teasing a sequel that was never made. And I was filled with wonder.

Wong Jing’s Kung Fu Cult Master (1993) is the first time I know that I watched something adapted from a Louis Cha story. It is based on the third novel in Cha’s Condor Trilogy, Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre. I probably saw it at the old Golden Classics Cinema in Toronto. It was when I was watching all the Jet Li movies. This one was memorable and, having no familiarity with the source material, I found it difficult to follow. That didn’t stop me from pretending later I had been struck by a Jinx Palm. (What do you expect me to do when you give me charcoal powder toothpaste, people?). I was filled with wonder.

Since then I have made sense of what I saw through translated comics adaptations, in particular Ma Wing-Shing’s Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre (Comic One, 2002), the novel Kung Fu Cult Master adapts. It seems fitting that I would first read Louis Cha via the comics of Ma Shing-Wing and Tony Wong’s The Legendary Couple (ComicOne, 2002), an adaptation of Cha’s Return of the Condor Heroes. It parallels how I first encountered him in a way that I remember in Kung Fu Cult Master, rather than Chor Yuen’s elegant Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre (1978) or Wong Kar-Wai’s deconstruction and sorta prequel, Ashes of Time (Redux or not) (1993; 2008).

The comics and the 1983 television adaptations allowed me to become familiar with Cha and these stories. They allowed me start to understand stories that assumed familiarity with the story, whether Kung Fu Cult Master, Ashes of Time, or Jeffrey Lau’s Lunar New Year parody of The Legend of Condor Heroes, The Eagle Shooting Heroes (1993), shot with the same cast and at the same time as Ashes of Time. In the early 1990s, Louis Cha was what Ip Man movies are now.

I watched some of the 2000s and 2010s tv adaptations in non-subtitled form, but by then I could understand who and what I was seeing. In fact, I was pleased when I could actually get the joke that the landlord and landlady in Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Hustle (2006) were the ill-fated lovers of Return of the Condor Heroes, Yang Guo and Xiaolongnü played by Andy Lau and Idy Chan in the 1983 tv adaptation I borrowed from a good friend and have since gotten for myself.

And it helped a lot watching those shows when I read Tony Wong’s Legendary Couple, because the translations of the names were so different, but I recognized a disreputable Taoist when I saw him.* Sometimes the Wudang Clan is something to mess with.

Cha’s most adapted–and possibly referenced–books are the Condor Trilogy: Legend of Condor Heroes; Return of the Condor Heroes; and, Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre. They are sequels, but follow family and kung fu school lines more than the adventures of any one protagonist through three novels. And luckily for us, McLehose Press is planning on translated the whole trilogy into English. The first volume, Legends of the Condor Heroes: A Hero Born, translanted by Anna Holmwood, is now available. No English speakers will ever need to struggle like I did again. The kung fu fantasy works of Louis Cha will be available to us all–or at least some of them.

Dr. Louis Cha Leung-yung was born in 1924 in Haining, Jiaxing, China and lives in Hong Kong. That’s right, Cha is still going at 94. He has worked as an editor editor and journalist, but it was his wuxia novels, written between 1955 and 1972 under the pseudonym “Jin Yong,” (Kam Yung in Cantonese) that brought him a tremendous success. According to Holmwood, “sales of his books worldwide stand at 300 million, and if bootleg copies are taken into consideration, that figure rises to a staggering one billion.”

Cha got his start as a copy editor in 1947 at Shanghai’s Ta Kung Po newspaper. He became deputy editor of Hong Kong’s Hsin Wan Po. He left journalism briefly to work as as screenwriter for Great Wall Movie Enterprises, Ltd. In 1959, Cha co-founded Hong Kong’s Ming Pao newspaper. And it was primarily Ming Pao that serialized his fifteen wuxia stories. His first was The Romance Of The Book And The Sword (1955). His last was Sword of the Yue Maiden. He retired from writing fiction in 1972 and he’s been updating and revising the work ever since. There was a time in the 1970s when his books were simultaneously banned in both the Mainland–because it was seen as satirizing and criticizing the Chinese government–and in Taiwan–because it was seen as somehow pro-Communist, anti-Kuomintang and critical of Taiwan’s one-party rule.In 1995, he retired from his position as editor-in-chief of Ming Pao. Cha has been active in Hong Kong politics, helping draft the Hong Kong Basic Law and then working on the Preparatory Committee in advance of the handover of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to China in 1997. And he’s spent much of the new millennium pursuing higher education. He studied at St. John’s College in Cambridge, receiving a doctorate in Chinese history in 2010. And the South China Morning Post reports that Cha (might have) received another doctorate, this one in Chinese literature from Peking University in 2013. Of course, this doesn’t even begin to cover his probable knowledge of martial arts like the Nine Yin Manual and 18 Dragon Palm. One assumes Dr. Cha is cultured in all things.

Whenever I think of Louis Cha, I think of Tony Leung Chiu-wai in Wong Kar-Wai’s In The Mood For Love (2000). Sure, there is lovely music and melancholy love with the sartorially unstoppable Maggie Cheung, but it is easy to overlook that not only is Tony Leung a writer, he is a writer of wuxia novels. I’m not saying that Wong made a movie about Louis Cha’s love life, which I hope is less depressing, but I think Cha and writers like Gu Long and Wang Dulu were in the background. Especially after Ashes Of Time. And Ashes of Time is a lot easier to follow if you realize it is a deconstruction of the Condor Trilogy. It relies on the same kind of familiarity that Peter Greenaway relies on people having with The Tempest in watching Prospero’s Books (1991). I love that the touchstones for both extremely artsy-fartsy directors are different. I love that Wong works with a serialized wuxia writer. It would be like Greenaway deconstructing Tolkien or Robert E. Howard**—but all wrapped up together. The high and low brow have a common enemy. God save us from the middle brow.

And Cha is being compared to Tolkien and George R. R. Martin in many of the reviews of A Hero Born. In fact, right on the cover a blurb from the Irish Times reads, “A Chinese Lord of the Rings.” And I get it. It’s short hand. People need some kind of reference before they’ll pick up the book. That’s fine. There will be plenty of time for pedantry later. Once people have read the book and become Cha fans, they can start arguing on the internet, “Hey, Louis Cha is a much more prolific author than Tolkien ever was with a more profound influence on Chinese language literature and readers.”

I would probably make those comparisons myself if my first encounter with Cha’s characters and stories hadn’t been Kung Fu Cult Master. Then again, Kung Fu Cult Master is the first half of a projected two-art adaptation but, like Ralph Bakshi’s animated Lord of the Rings, there was never a part two. So. Yeah. It’s just that I don’t know what other comparison to make.

In an interview with South China Morning Post, Anna Holmwood describes Legends of the Condor Heroes: A Hero Born as “China’s Walter Scott mixed with The Lord of the Rings fantasy things. That’s exactly what it is.” For their part, the SCMP copy editor chose a title comparing the trilogy with George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice And Fire. A Hero Born is wuxia at its best. It’s 1205 CE and the Jin are encroaching on the Song Empire. The emperor is unworthy and the people are oppressed. Itinerant heroes try to make things right. Two of them, Skyfury Guo and Ironheart Yang encounter a grumpy Taoist priest Chu Qiuji*** who, while heroic, is a jerk. He avidly demonstrates why the Wu Tang Clan is nothing to mess with. Guo and Yang become involved in a fight with soldiers and must flee. Their children, Guo Jing and Yang Kang grow up on different sides of the conflict. Plus, there’s Genghis Khan! And a secret beggar sect! And one of my favorite characters keeps his wife’s body in a frozen cave! I wish I could do better, but I’ll just suggest you read the book, read the comics, watch the tv shows and movies.

Oh, yeah, and there’s plenty of fantastic kung fu move and school names and action. Comics, while also working in a static medium, don’t face the same kinds of challenges a novel does in depicting action. Comics creator Ma Wing-Shing in particular captures the force of the martial arts masters moves. I am particularly fond of his chi lines. But Holmwood has some interesting thoughts on translating the names of the various stances, fists and swords as well as conveying the choreography of a fight sans images.

“The name [of these moves] is very evocative and it’s part of the creating of the world, but what really matters to readers is can they follow who is doing what, what the actions are, who is hitting whom, and how they are hitting them,” she said. “When you are translating, you have to read on such a careful and deep level. You are constantly asking yourself: is the hand going there? Is it going up or down? How is this move working? That’s the most challenging part – is to be able to express what the actions are in a way that is going to be vivid on the page and people can clearly understand and follow what’s happening.”

“You can shorten sentences to make the action move, and use some short punchy verbs that make the actions very fast,” she said. “When you want to draw attention to the moment for dramatic effect, you add more details, slow it down, and make the sentence a big longer.”

And I have to say it works. Right from the start of A Hero Born, I easily imagine Chu Qiuji’s unnecessarily brutal fights with the heroes he mistakes for scoundrels. Does it help that I’ve read Ma Wing-Shing, Tony Wong and seen film and television adaptations of Cha’s stories? Maybe. But Holmwood does a good job of taking readers into the martial world. I can’t wait for the next translated volume of Legend of Condor Heroes finally presented if not in its original serial format, something close. McLehose is planning three more volumes of Legend of Condor Heroes before starting on Return of the Condor Heroes–making this a burly “trilogy.”

A Journal of the Plague

Originally published on the Doomstead Diner on April 5, 2020

"The taverns are fair full of gadabouts making merry this eve. Though I may press my face against the window like an urchin at a confectioner’s, I am tempted not by the sweetmeats within. A dram in exchange for the pox is an ill bargain indeed."

Watching Covid-19 unfold is like watching the approach of a slow motion catastrophe. We cannot run, nor hide. We can only wait. The math is immutable, and inexorable. The confirmed infection counts and death tolls double every three days. Tick-tock.

We are told to practice "social distancing," to wear masks, to wash our hands continuously, to not touch our faces, and most of all to #Staythefuckhome. Most do. Some, including notorious ignorami, assorted MAGATs, and fundamentalist preachers whose addiction to positive cash flow depends on filling their megachurches, do not. These people should be treated as if they want you dead, judging from their actions, they do.

On a warm spring day last weekend they could be found packing cars going God-knows-where, on sidewalks with kids in tow, even going house-to-house to talk to neighbors! Amidst all the people on their bikes taking advantage of a sweet spring day to go out and provide disease vectors for the unsuspecting, I noted that a friend posted on Facebook that the parking lots down at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront were absolutely packed. Leaving the cynical person to wonder, "what the hell is wrong with people?"

We are linear thinkers; we do not do the exponential function very well. (Part of the reason Einstein, when asked to identify the most powerful force he had seen in a lifetime of discovery, replied, “Compound interest.")

The very next day, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam issued a stay-at-home order for Virginia in an effort to further stop the spread of the coronavirus. Better late than never.

Being first to lock the state down seems to have worked for California. I saw a clip by Gavin Newsom on TV saying as much, that the lockdown flattened the impact. He/they just had the good sense to employ the only weapon available. California bought themselves time, and kept the outbreak from swamping their health system. The less the infection penetrates the population in advance of a vaccine, the better.

My inner hunchback is waiting for karma to arrive in Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, and the other states that insist on staying "open for bidness" in the face of the trump Plague. I wish I were a better person. I am not.

In a recent book review, Charles Baxter observes,

Mania rules in many American classics. Like it or not, in what has been taken to be our national literature, the notable white male characters are often in the grip of obsession. From Captain Ahab, to Frank Norris’s McTeague, Fitzgerald’s Gatsby, Faulkner’s Thomas Sutpen, Nabokov’s Humbert Humbert, Philip Roth’s Portnoy, and James McBride’s John Brown, we are in the presence of men who want only one thing and have sold their souls to get it.

We are all maniacs now: maniacs to stay alive, to remain beyond the reach of a silent killer with near universal reach, and whose lethality will disproportionately affect the elderly and the infirm. And while we may not sell our souls, we have certainly turned our vigilance up to "10."

Samuel Pepys (pronounced: "Peeps"), a capable administrator of British naval affairs and Member of Parliament in the seventeenth century, kept a diary as a young man. He recorded his daily life for almost ten years, and his record is often regarded as Britain’s most celebrated diary.

Historians have for years been mining Pepys' insights about details of everyday life during the seventeenth century, as he documented the coronation of King Charles II and the Restoration, the Anglo-Dutch war, the Great Plague, and the Great Fire of London. It is his descriptions of the London plague years of 1655-66 that we care about here.

The Great Plague of London killed between 75,000-100,000, roughly 20 per cent of the population. Pepys' diary is filled wth what might today be called, "hot takes:"

On hearing ill rumour that Londoners may soon be urged into their lodgings by Her Majesty’s men, I looked upon the street to see a gaggle of striplings making fair merry, and no doubt spreading the plague well about. Not a care had these rogues for the health of their elders!

As noted above, on a clear weekend day I noted cars filled with people leaving the neighborhood… going where, exactly? And beheld the sight of a neighbor working out on another neighbor who had the good sense to hide behind a storm door while the sputum-deliverer held forth. I swear, had he crossed the street I'd have used a rake to oblige him to keep his distance.

Great fears of the Sickenesses here in the City, it being said that two or three houses are already shut up. God preserve us all.

We are all shut up in our houses now. Aside, that is, from a few states in the south and west who wish themselves part of the Neo-confederacy. Persuading an entire country to voluntarily stay at home is not easy, and without clear direction from an unwilling White House, mayors, governors, and business owners have rolled their own.

Thus this month ends, with great sadness upon the public through the greateness of the plague, everywhere through the Kingdom almost. Every day sadder and sadder news of its increase. In the City died this week 7496; and all of them, 6102 of the plague. But it is feared that the true number of the dead this week is near 10000 – partly from the poor that cannot be taken notice of through the greatness of the number, and partly from the Quakers and others that will not have any bell ring for them. As to myself, I am very well; only, in fear of the plague, and as much of an Ague, by being forced to go early and late to Woolwich, and my family to lie there continually.

The death toll in the US as of this writing is over 9100. The number of US confirmed cases is over 321,000. Look for these rates to double every three days until the disease peaks. Soon, most everyone in the US will know someone who has been infected. Like 9/11, the pandemic has already imprinted itself upon our psyche as a defining moment.

The pandemic has shattered the myth of American "greatness." As the first among equals of rich, strong, developed nations, the supremacy of American health care is held as an article of faith. That illusion has been shattered. In spite of months of advance warning as the virus tore through other countries, when America was finally tested by COVID-19, it failed.

Countries like South Korea, Singapore, and Hong Kong followed the playbook: develop a test, use it to identify the infected, isolate them, and trace those they’ve had contact with. Wash, rinse, repeat. As Alexis Madrigal and Robinson Meyer reported, the CDC developed and distributed a faulty test in February. No one could have imagined that as the American caseload shot into the tens of thousands, only hundreds of people would be tested. This created an epidemiological hole from which we have never emerged. Lack of a reliable test deployed early enough is the single point of failure that undermined every other countermeasure, and that has led to the immutable, exponential math.

Bet your mortgage that the impacts on economic, social and political aspects of our lives from coronavirus will be long lasting. And compounded, given the chaos, corruption, and cronyism that heralded our blundered entry into this crisis. Few have ever seen anything like this, and only a few cranks and miscreants (aside from professional planners) have even bothered to contemplate it.

The London plague continued into 1666.

Thanks be to God, the plague is, as I hear, encreased but two this week; but in the country in several places it rages mightily, and particularly in Colchester, where it hath long been, and is believed will quite depopulate the place.

Italy and Spain offer grim warnings about an American future. Hospitals are rapidly running out of room, supplies, and staff. Health-care workers are already seeing dwindling equipment, growing waves of patients, with doctors and nurses themselves becoming ill. And they are operating without a gaunt, shiny-faced, porcelain-doll wannabe-Dauphin to bollix up supplies of medical equipment, and to MBAsplain coronavirus to the nation's Governors. Trump and Bolton terminated the Pandemic staff and have given the portfolio to Richie Rich for on-the-job training. God help us all.

By 1667 Pepys' plague had burnt out, but still lived in recent memory:

One at the table told an odd passage in this late plague: that at Petersfield, I think, he said, one side of the street had every house almost infected through the town, and the other, not one shut up.

During a time of "social distancing," we are reduced to staring off the porch or out the window. Like the denizens of Plato's cave, we watch the electronic shadows dance off the wall, while we attempt to make sense of them. Even more difficult is imagining how we might begin to recover from a virtual shutdown of economic life. As we try to restart an all-but-stopped economy dependent upon an engine of ceaseless consumption, we run the risk of renewed disease flareups as seen in China, Singapore, and other Asian countries that briefly seemed to have the virus under control. All it takes is one case to reignite fresh infections.

My best guess is that until a vaccine can be produced (probably 18 months), we'll continue to play a protracted game of whack-a-mole with the virus, stamping out outbreaks as they occur.

The slow response to the virus by some Trumpophile governors will be telling. Virus hot spots in are South poised for disproportionate suffering. With many Southern states only recently implementing stay-at-home orders, there is a chance that a later wave of infection could swamp local facilities. Even sparsely populated counties could soon have more cases than their health care systems can handle.

“There is no city anywhere in the world that can withstand the outbreak that would occur if there isn’t rigorous social distancing,” said Tom Frieden, a former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director.

In Virginia, the governor is both a Democrat and a physician, so he imposed social distancing earlier than some. But some children of privilege and exception haven't taken it seriously.

The Columbia University model also identified the area around Hampton Roads and Newport News, Va., at risk of having its health infrastructure swamped. Though the number of cases in those counties is currently low, Virginia is not expected to experience peak conditions until late May, and has so far received just a tiny fraction of the medical equipment requested from the federal government.

On Friday, state leaders confirmed that the tidewater region has some of the highest community spread in the state, and that it would be one of three areas designated for a field hospital to take pressure off the local medical system. The “alternate care” site in the Hampton Roads Convention Center will be able to hold up to 360 acute care beds or 580 non-acute beds, Gov. Ralph Northam said.

2. Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m Vera, I’m from Greece and I’m currently on the 23rd decade of my life. I’m a Classical Studies graduate and I’m considering doing a Master’s too. I’m a major foodie, a fashion and style enthusiast, an avid dancer and an old school rock lover. A quite sarcastic human being trying to make it in this world with the attitude of your average clown-friend.

3. What do you never leave home without?

Probably my phone, as true to our 21st century standards. Plus, my headphones and my sunglasses.

4. Are you an early bird or a night owl?

I’m a night owl for sure. I hate early mornings and I love sleep but I also can never go to bed before 2 or 3 am.

5. If you could live in any fictional world which one would you choose and why?

I would want to live in the Pokémon world or the Harry Potter universe but during the Marauders era. Witty and utterly smitten James Potter, rebel with a cause Sirius Black, the First Wizarding War, this is a true fantasy right there that I’ll never ever outgrow.

6. Who is the most famous person you’ve ever met?

There are a lot of Greek people that you guys, obviously, won’t know. Not many international celebrities in my resume, I’m afraid. But I briefly chatted and took a picture with Jim Chapman from YouTube while I was visiting London two years ago.

7. What are some of your favorite movies/TV?

I enjoy a lot of different movie genres but I guess an old Hollywood one, some good old Hitchcock or anything drama are my typical choices most times. Out of the top of my head, definitely Gone with The Wind, Casablanca, Pulp Fiction, The Breakfast Club and such. As for TV shows, Lost is always first in my heart. Current favorites would be Sense8, Stranger Things, Westworld, Riverdale.

8. What are some of your favorite bands/musicians?

That’s a question that would take me pages to answer. Long story short, I’m a cultural chaos regarding music. I listen to almost everything, my Spotify has a tone of personal playlists and my vinyl collection is reaching a terrifying extend. My favorite genre is definitely classic rock but I also really love alternative rock, indie rock, and rock ‘n’ roll. On an average day, I’m usually blasting something along the lines of The 1975, then Pink Floyd, then Frank Sinatra, then Tchaikovsky, then Kanye West, then The Killers and so on and it’s a miracle that I still manage to stay a somewhat sane person.

9. Favorite Books?

Anything Jane Austen, Bronte Sisters or Dostoyevsky can get me going. But for the level of angst and devotion and truly wicked love my favorite one is Wuthering Heights.

10. Favorite Food?

Chicken curry with rice. I also really love shrimps.

11. Biggest pet peeve?

Probably people that chew very loudly. Or ignorant and uneducated people, not in the academic sense of the word, but ill-mannered and rude.

12. What did you want to be when you were little? What do you want to be now?

For many years I wanted to be an architect. This plan though sunk because my sketching skills are equivalent of a two year old. So, I ended up studying the Classics (basically the study of the Greco-Roman world, particularly of its languages and literature, but also including philosophy, history, and archaeology.) This field and area of studies is something I very much enjoy and value but I don’t really see it as my lifetime job. What fascinates me and makes me passionate about is Journalism so I’m thinking about extending my studies in the journalistic field as well. And then of course there is writing; the ultimate dream.

13. What are your biggest fears? Do you have any strange fears?

I’m scared of wasps, only because I’m allergic to a lot of things and, seriously, I don’t wanna push my luck. Another one would be my odd phobia of getting nauseous and being sick. For some weird reason I associate vomiting with death. Other strange fears, no, nothing comes to mind. As for more fundamental ones, it’s the fear of ending up alone; loneliness is something that scares me deeply. Also, disappointing my inner perfectionist by being average or not good enough at any aspect of my life.

14. When you are on your deathbed what would be the one you’d regret not doing?

Live more. I have a very composed and rational mentality, I always think first and then act and generally I’m more of an observer than a doer. I regret, for example, not being a crazier teenager or a more reckless college student or generally a little bit more “loose”. Hopefully, my introverted self will stop watching stoically life passing her by and take more chances by the time I reach that final moment, haha.

Okay… let’s talk about your writing!

15. Which is your favorite of the fics you've written for the Bughead fandom?

Where The Wild Roses Grow – Angst is the air I breathe, enough said.

16. Which was the hardest to write, in terms of plot?

Up until now I used to write only Bughead prompts and one-shots so, plot wise, I can’t think of any of them causing me too much headache. I could say Fruit Punch Lips & Leather Jacket Dreams, only because of the length of the chapters and the hurricane of ideas I had in my mind. Right now I’m trying my hand at my first multi-chaptered fic for the Bughead fandom and I can definitely say that it is proving to be quite the task in terms of planning and prioritizing.

17. How do you come up with the ideas for you fic(s)? Do you people watch? Listen to music? Get inspired by TV/movies?

For me, it’s mostly TV and movies. I always make parallels between plotlines and couples so a lot of ideas do come from stuff that I have seen on the big screen or during a marathon of an old show. But they also come from everyday life, I mean I could be discussing something with my best friend or doing groceries or driving and something along the way would strike me and demand from me to write it on paper.

18. Idea that you always wanted to write but could never make work?

I really really wanted (and still want, to be honest) to write a Dancing With The Stars Bughead fic. I know it’s crazy and totally random but the idea had stuck in my head while I was watching some dancing videos on YouTube and instantly I had everything planned; the roles, the plot, the dancing sessions, the choreographies, the drama, everything. I gave up on the idea merely because it’s quite difficult to portray such show on paper and I was afraid that the scenes in my head would turn out totally different if I attempted to write them, so I’ll treasure this story in my heart and think fondly about it whenever I listen to a song I had picked for a Bughead dance-off. But you never know; maybe my muse will be more confident about helping me give life to this idea in the future.

19. Least favorite plot point/chapter/moment you’ve written?

I wouldn’t say it’s my least favorite but I don’t feel very confident about Heliophilia, the second chapter of Fruit Punch Lips & Leather Jacket Dreams. There are a lot of things that I like in the chapter obviously, but I find the beginning a tad cheesy and then at the part with Betty’s and Jughead’s date I believe that I just ramble on and on with no purpose whatsoever. I was very inspiration-deprived while working on that chapter so, to me at least, it feels like not my best work.

20. Favorite plot point/chapter/moment you’ve written?

Jughead raised as a Serpent in my latest fic. I like the dynamic the gang element gives to his character and I really wanted to explore it in my own little universe. It just adds another layer to his personality and diverse characters are always the most fun to work with. Also, #GirlNextDoor was very fun to write. Being in Jughead’s shoes as an accomplished writer and envisioning future Bughead in their own adult apartment had me overwhelmed with lovely feelings.

21. Favorite character to write?

Jughead, for sure. Maybe because I relate more to his quite nature or maybe it’s the fact that I appreciate the writer in him and his old soul, which are again qualities that I have too as a person. He has so much potential as a character, so many layers to peel off. Yeah, Jughead Jones is a delight for me to write.

22. Favorite line or lines of dialogue that you've written?

I don’t think I have something specific in mind. If I go back and read any of my stories, I always find something that I feel pretty confident about, either that’s a sentence or a whole paragraph. I guess that’s why it takes me so long to update; I always check and double-check and reread and erase and add until I feel positive that what I’m putting out is something I’m quite satisfied to present to all of you. That and the fact that me, a Victor Hugo wannabe, doesn’t know the usage and the importance of a full stop!

23. Best comment/review you’ve ever received?

Every single one. Literally. The fact that somebody takes the time to write even a single “great work” means the world. Yes, the long, commentary-like reviews are always an extra delight; every author would agree on that, because, we love receiving feedback that shows the emotion and the reaction our words brought to each reader. It’s very direct and on-point. But even just a thumb’s up or an incoherent array of vowels can literally make my day!

24. How do you handle bad reviews or comments?

I’m one of the fortunate ones that never got any bad reviews or hate comments. I hope it stays that way because, on a good day, my confidence as a writer (and as a person in general) is beneath zero! But constructive criticism is always welcomed and wanted.

25. If you could change anything in any of your stories, what would it be?

The occasional typos! They drive me nuts, I hate them and I hate myself for them. Also, I’d like to remind myself to put a damn full stop every once in a while, not only a plethora of commas in insanely long sentences!

26. What is your favorite story you’ve ever written? Any fandom?

I was very into Spaleb (Spencer and Caleb from Pretty Little Liars) for as much as it lasted and, amongst a few other stories, I’ve written an one-shot titled The First Cup of Coffee about the four times Spencer gets the first cup of coffee in the morning and a fifth that she realizes she wants Caleb to have that privilege. Basically, it’s five snapshots of their life together and the growth of their relationship through the years and I really enjoyed writing it and generally envisioning a future about that couple. I also had a great time writing about Klaus and Caroline from The Vampire Diaries. But none of my previous fanfiction experiences amounts to the utter excitement and joy writing for Bughead fills me with.

27. What are you reading right now? Both fan fiction and general fiction?

Fanfiction wise, I need a lot of catching up to do. I have so many fics that I either want to continue or start reading and so little time but I’m getting there. It’s personal at this point! As for general fiction, I’m reading Uncle Vanya by Chekhov and some various poetry.

28. Do you have an advice for writers that want to get into this fandom but might be scared?

Just write. Open a plain document and write. Write whatever you have in that brilliant head of yours, write what you would read if you were about to search between genres and plotlines. Don’t think about note numbers or people’s reaction; just write what your heart desires and your muse urges you too. If you enjoy what you write then, trust me, everyone is going to enjoy it too. Don’t doubt yourself and don’t try to change your style or adjust to any norms you might consider as successful. Writing is personal, a kind of identity, and it’s unique and mesmerizing so proudly present your own identity to the world. Also, be sure to support your fellow writers. We are all a team here, a group of people that enjoy the same passion, and love and recognition is always a must. So applaud your fellow Buggies and applaud yourself for everything that you put out in this fandom, either that is a 40k fic or just a fifty-word paragraph. What you write matters and it might change somebody’s day. So share it and never second-guess yourself.

1. How often is it that you make a post on any sort of social media, and then delete it soon after? Why? I very rarely do that. I don’t even recall the last time I did that. 2. Have your ideas and expectations about adulthood changed as you’ve gotten older? Well, adulthood sucks and it’s definitely not how I thought it would be. At twenty-eight years old, I certainly thought I’d be in a different position than I am now. 3. Have you ever taken time off to focus on your mental health? Are you the type of person that is able to take a break or are you more likely to bury yourself in responsibility? I was the type of person who buried myself in responsibility for so long and it took its toll. When I finally was done with school two years ago, I decided I would then take some time to focus on myself and my health. Well, here we are two years later and I’m no further than I was then. Things just got worse. 4. Do you enjoy keeping track of, rating, and reviewing the media you consume? I don’t do that.

5. Are you constantly on the lookout for new movies to watch and books to read or do you tend to just wait for something to pique your interest? I’d say I’m always on the lookout. I enjoy having several shows to watch and books to read.

6. Do you have a different group of friends on a site besides this one? I don’t have any online friends. 7. If you are or were in college, when you share your major with people how do they usually react? If you are not in college, how do you explain your job situation to others and what is their reaction? Whenever I tell people I majored in psychology, they always say something along the lines of them being my first client and that I could help them. They think I’m a psychologist. They think I just know everything and will be like, “well you majored in psychology, you should know”; especially when it comes to myself and my mental health. Oh, and they think I’m probably analyzing them. 8. If you are or were in college, do you find that you have many things in common with others who share your major or not? If you are not in college, have you ever made friendships with people at your job who are not coworkers (e.g., clients or customers)? Honestly, when I got to UC I was at the point of getting my BA so I was there for 2 years just taking my required classes and focusing on my schoolwork. 9. When you watch competition shows, do you feel an automatic support for a competitor who’s from your state or region? Yeah, haha. 10. Do you ever fantasize about saving the day or being a hero (e.g., you are near some children playing by a river. You imagine one falling in and you saving them)? No. I can’t even save myself. 11. Which season do you enjoy dressing for the most and why? Fall. 12. If you are familiar with any science fiction, what sort of science fiction future do you think is most likely to actually happen? Feel free to predict without the impact of existing sci-fi, too. I don’t know, man. 13. Do you think it is possible that eventually humans will create enough technology to completely or nearly completely automate work and free up people to a new experience of social relations without “jobs” as we know them today? There’s already some of that going on and talks of doing even more.

14. Do you find yourself becoming more afraid of unlikely situations when they are broadcast by the media? For example, are you more afraid of going to the movie theater after the recent shootings, or are you more afraid of contracting a rare illness if the news highlights an outbreak? Most definitely. Like, I’m afraid of going to crowded, public events/places like outdoor concerts or something because of shootings or bombings. Have you heard what just happened in Vegas? After hearing about movie theater shootings I was afraid of going to the movies for awhile. Even now it’s in the back of my mind whenever I go. If there’s an outbreak of some kind, I’m terrified of getting it. If I hear about the symptoms, I’ll be convinced I’m experiencing it.

15. Do you enjoy taking selfies and do you enjoy looking at other people’s selfies? I rarely take selfies anymore cause I just feel like absolute crap about myself, and my self-esteem was bad before, but it’s been worse this past year when I stopped putting in the effort. 16. First, list a few of your negative personality traits. Second, when you notice others displaying these traits are you more likely to be understanding and forgiving because you can relate? My list of negative traits is a long one. I feel bad when other people are hard on themselves and I’m definitely more understanding of them and kind, but I can’t be kind that way to myself for the same things. 17. Are there any songs that you enjoy, but the lyrics are problematic/downright offensive? What about films with shady directors or plot points? How do you negotiate liking art or artists that represent offensive ideas or that have problematic politics? Yeah, you could say that. 18. Have you ever used a dating app? What was your experience like? If not, what is your impression of them? Nope and I have no desire to. 19. When it comes to politics, what is your opinion about voting for the “lesser of two evils”? Would you rather vote for someone you hate less (between 2 main parties), someone you truly believe in but who won’t win (3rd party), or abstain from voting altogether? Blah politics. 20. If you are in school, do you tend to take a lot of similar classes or classes on the same topic even if it’s not necessary for your major? While in community college I was able to branch out, but when I got to university I was only taking classes required for my major to get my BA. 21. What is your opinion on protest marches? What about different tactics taken by activists such as boycotts, shutting down highways, sit-ins, and even blockades of trade ships? What do you think is the best method to actually enact change? Protest marches as fine as long as they’re peaceful. To me, that says a lot more than the violent ones because when people act that way, no one wants to take you seriously or hear what you have to say and the message gets overshadowed by the chaoticness. 22. Do you believe in parallel universes or infinite possibilities or do you tend to believe that what we see and know now is pretty much it? I don’t believe in parallel universes. 23. When you think about your past are you more likely to have a rose-colored view and remember happy and nostalgic moments and kind of forget about the bad or is the opposite? My childhood I remember fondly. Some memories with certain people I may remember more fondly than they really have been. Otherwise, I dwell way too much on my past and all the negative. 24. When online shopping do you tend to leave your cart full for days or even weeks waiting for a good sale or coupon, or do you generally buy what you want at that moment? I usually put stuff in my cart and buy later, depending on what it is and the cost. 25. Have you ever had a specific moment when you were extremely glad you are not a celebrity or when you were relieved to be a nobody (e.g., when some dirt on you was exposed or you acted obscenely in public)? I am glad that I am not a celebrity and have no desire to ever have that kind of attention on me.

Understanding the biological, psychological, and social factors of mental health and the Impact of stigma on the well-being of older adults

Stigmatization: The Biopsychosocial Model

I want to start off by introducing the biopsychosocial model of aging and mental health (Segal et al.,2018). The biopsychosocial model proposes that interrelated biological, psychological, and social factors both positively and negatively influence mental health (Segal et al.,2018). Mental disorders can arise or worsen when an individual is impacted by negative biological, psychological, and social factors (Segal et al.,2018). For example, biological risks such as endocrine and neuroanatomical factors contribute to higher risks of mental disorders such as depression (Fiske, Wetherell, & Gatz, 2009). Furthermore, studies have shown that depression occurs in the context of medical illness meaning that those with a chronic medical illness often experience depression due to a variety of reasons one being due to social isolation (Fiske, Wetherell, & Gatz, 2009). Psychological risk factors that contribute to higher risk of mental health issues also include personality, vulnerability, and resiliency (Fiske, Wetherell, & Gatz, 2009). Social risk factors include lack of social support and a person’s environment (Fiske, Wetherell, & Gatz, 2009).

You may ask, how are such factors related to or important towards the topic of stigmatization and its negative impact on older adults with normal and abnormal mental health problems? My answer is the following: The stereotyping of older adults and stigmatizing of mental health leads to negative biological, psychological and social influences among older adults with normal and abnormal mental health. The stigmatization of mental health and mental disorders in older adults leads to negative psychological influences which include lowered self-esteem, lowered coping strategies, and lowered treatment seeking behaviours (Tzouvara, Papadopoulos, & Randhawa, 2018). Furthermore, the stigmatization of older adults and mental health leads to negative social factors such as discrimination and marginilization. These factors can in turn influence the physical and mental health of older adults.

Let me provide an example in order for you to better understand how biological, psychological, and social factors work together to influence mental health issues in older adults and how stigmatization plays a role in such action.

I’d like you to meet Stacy. Stacy was born in 1932 during the midst of the great depression. At 87 years old, she has lived through the second world war and watched the first man to walk on the moon. She has lived through the advancement of many technologies such as TVs, computers, telephones, and much more. Her experiences over the years have made her who she is today. Unfortunately, Stacy has recently lost her husband of 40 years. Her children live far away but try to visit when they can. A recent fall not too long ago caused Stacy to need hip replacement surgery and she has been struggling to walk properly ever since. Due to her husband's passing and her limited mobility Stacy becomes socially isolated and feels persistent sad and anxious. She feels tired all the time and feels worthless, and starts to lose interest in activities she had found pleasurable. She is aware that depression runs in her family but during a get together at her neighbours house, Stacy overhears the neighbours talking about their disinterest in Jeff, who is a 55 year old neighbour battling PTSD and an addiction issue. The neighbours share uneducated and false preconceived notions and stereotypes of Jeff and his mental illness, and mention the reason why Jeff is excluded from get togethers is because of his mental health issues. This experience makes Stacy feel very upset, and although she had been willing to go visit her doctor and inform her doctor about her struggles, after such interaction with her neighbours she decides she will no longer visit her doctor or tell him about her mental and physical issues because she does not want her neighbours to view her and talk about her like they did about Jeff. She also does not want to be excluded from social get togethers, as she feels socially isolated and lonely due to her situation. Unfortunately, a consequence of not seeking out treatment for her physical and mental health issues means that she won’t get the care she needs and her condition will only further deteriorate which may lead to a poorer quality of life and even an earlier mortality rate.

Stacy’s story above indicates how biological issues (history of depression in her family and her mobility limitations), psychological issues (her grief and struggle with the coping of her husband’s death), and her social environment (losing social interactions due to individuals stereotyping and stigmatization of people with mental health issues) can simultaneously work together to influence Stacy’s health seeking behaviours and mental health issues which in turn impact Stacy’s physical and mental health and well-being.

Before I end this post, I do want to elaborate more on an aspect that I had mentioned in Stacy’s situation and it is about the ability to stay active and the influence stigmatization of mental health issues has on the activity levels of older adults with or without mental health issues.

Before I do so I’d like to make a joke since you've probably been doing a lot of reading. Would you like to hear a pizza joke? Never mind, it’s pretty cheesy.Hope that gave a good chuckle, if it didn’t then it’s a good thing I’m doing a Masters of Science in Aging and Health and not a Masters in Comedy.

Stigmatization: Activity Theory Not Disengagement Theory

I want to emphasize that the stigmatization of mental health and mental disorders in older adults can lead to social isolation due to social exclusion brought upon by prejudices. Those who suffer from mental illnesses withdraw from social interactions due to fear of negative reactions which leads to diminished participation in society. As the activity theory of aging highlights it is important that older adults stay active as it contributes to better physical, mental, and social well-being. It is important for older adults with abnormal mental health problems in particular to remain active in the community as such actions can help with the mitigation of mental health problems and improves physical, mental, and social functioning and well-being. Social inclusion leads to greater social interactions which improves mental well-being. Several studies have recognized the importance of social supports and networks on the overall well-being of older adults. It is our responsibility as a society to ensure that older adults are not marginalized and are not socially excluded because of the stigmatization of mental health problems and discriminatory factors such as ageism. Wednesday Roundup

*long deep sigh*

Okay, I said last week I was going to cancel all Marvel subscriptions in response to the bullcrap that was revealed in Secret Empire. And I continue to firmly stand on not supporting Marvel on any decisions involving that catastrophe. But I must go back on my word. After discussing with friends and others about the best course of action, I am afraid that Marvel set things up -- what with the anti-diversity talks just a few weeks ago -- to make it seem as though any boycotts that would come about due to the Hydra revelations last week would be scapegoated to the titles that are doing the opposite. So I want to support titles that do just that -- titles like Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur -- so long as their book isn’t involved with the crossover and if their authors don’t seem to have much involvement either.

... also I pre-ordered Deadpool Vol. 6 for a specific reason that I’ll get into in the review.

All that out of the way, let’s get into the comics this week~

DC’s Batman Beyond (2016- ) #7 Dan Jurgens, Bernard Chang, Marcello Maiolo

*long heralding sigh* We can’t leave well enough alone, can we, DC?

The continuity of Batman Beyond has somewhat been in the toilet from the start. Anything which got its start thanks to the awfulness that was Futures End was sort of doomed to that, especially since they were trying to make that the canon ending of the DCU proper, while at the same time drawing in elements from the animated series.

This book, though, honestly gave me a lot of hope for what it was doing, which was to focus on the characters pretty specifically from the DCAU Batman Beyond cartoon and growing their stories and relationships rather than focusing on trying to put itself too immediately in the Earth Prime timeline.

And those moments from this issue are great. We get more Max and Bruce interactions, which I love. We get some actual growth of Dana and Terry’s relationship. Curare is still one of my favorite villains. Matt’s increased role excites me.

And then we get this fucking page.

I have a bad history with DC splash pages of “our family history” already (see any of my Batgirl (2009-2011) rants), but this one just goes straight for the throat. Sorry literally every woman in the Batfamily ever. I mean, usually at least Barbara gets a shoutout but not even that this time around. And then the worst offense is that Damian and Duke are both whitewashed. What the actual fuck.

This entire page is a disaster, especially since we are very obviously just using it to foreshadow that the leader of the League of Assassins has to do with Damian, because godforbid anyone but the biological child be treated special.

Oh, sorry. Biological male child. Or else we’d see some plots with Helena Wayne, couldn’t have that.

Oh, Batman Beyond. Why must you hurt me the way you do. I was enjoying you so much too.

Marvel’s Deadpool (2015- ) Volume 6: Patience: Zero Gerry Duggan, Matted Lolli, Scott Koblish, Guru-eFX

So I’ve obviously made some exceptions to my Marvel rule and that is simply a case-by-case basis. There are stronger reasons for the other exception this week, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, which I would honestly be devastated if it was taken down because of this monumental grossness that is Marvel right now because it’s the epitome of everything that’s not the Secret Empire catastrophe.

The other is Deadpool because I pre-ordered this volume months ago and because Deadpool is just a weird exception of a comic to begin with. At least as Deadpool is written under Gerry Duggan and how these particular issues especially are written.

So yes, while I would recommend all the issues in this trade to comic fans, the issue I really bought this volume for is for a very personal reason: #20 is the issue dealing with suicide and mental illness and... as someone who struggles on this road in my own life, in both point of views we have here, I am... very particular about how these issues are approached. I hate the way it was handled in Robin (1993-2009), despise the way it was portrayed in All-Star Superman, I just honestly don’t feel like I’ve ever read a story -- especially in comics -- that spoke to me and made me feel like I benefited from it the way the comics were obviously trying to make me feel.

Deadpool goes the most realistic route I’ve ever seen this handled. It’s about “death is permanent, so let’s make sure there’s nothing else you want to do first” It’s about helping someone out, giving them other things to focus on in the moment, giving them more to experience, and then knowing when professional help is needed, when you’re beyond your means.

And it’s hard. Deadpool says it best -- unkilling someone is way harder. And I’ve never felt an issue strike such a cord with me before.

Of course, that’s only one of several issues collected, and we finally get the climax and our answers with Madcap. The entire storyline was rediculous, dramatic, frightening, and any range of emotions between. A great story overall even if anything involving Hydra -- especially Bob -- inherently sickens me at this point.

If you’re on that level with me on the Hydra stuff, I would recommend buying #20 on its own and then #25 to finish up the Deadpool 2099 story which, for me, had a good conclusion to it.

But yeah. This was a splurge purchase at least partially because... I have a feeling I won’t be picking up the next few trades of Deadpool flat out, honestly. Lots of Secret Empire this way comes. And I’m not happy about it. Hopefully I can pick up Vol. 8 or 9 and we can get back to Deadpool and Ellie and Preston and everything that makes me love this comic to begin with.

DC’s Detective Comics (2016- ) #955 James Tynion IV, Marcio Takara, Marcello Maiolo

CASS HAS A GIRLFRIEND BALLERINA AND SHE APOLOGIZED AND ALL IS GOOD AND NOT AN ORPHAN ANYMORE BE STILL MY HEART

OKAY. So that’s out of my system. Last time (two weeks ago) I went into a full on rant about how there are things I Love about Tynion’s writing -- relationships, character building, the sense of family, understanding how to write Cass the way few writers other than her creators have truly gotten -- and things I Hate about Tynion’s writing -- an overall lack of build up for payoff, weak plots, a bit of a ‘break the status quo’ mentality despite a lack of building said status quo -- there are Things. And I can make entire essays about how I feel he needs to grow as a writer especially when it comes to writing mysteries which is what Detective Comics should be at its core.

I’m putting that aside for now -- still there, I still have my issues with this arc -- but this issue is... It’s going to be a milestone.

It’s going to be a milestone in bringing Cass’ character back into full form. And I loved every moment of it. The pacing was still.... ehhh. Could’ve probably benefited more from immediately starting with the flashback explaining Cass’ recovery and reintroducing our ballerina girlfriend, then launching into the present time uninterrupted. Maybe show Cass rescuing the others from their naked Hell, because as far as I can tell that just means we’re going to have another disorganized flashback in the next issue which isn’t making me excited because that should be the finale to all of this.

Yatta yatta. Critical lenses are on, everyone, don’t worry. I’m still the Rena you know.

I just don’t care as much because those things I Love that I mentioned? They where here and they were with my favorite characters. And ALSO???? Tynion planted the seed of the ballerina and Cass living above the studio many issues ago??? And then actually gave us payoff for it??? What is this, a personal letter to me?

Nah, can’t be. No windows were broken in this issue.

I enjoyed myself is what I’m getting at. It’s amazing how I can be really irritated with Detective Comics and then all the sudden it drags me right back in with an issue that gets me just right.

Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur (2015- ) #18 Amy Reeder, Brandon Montclare, Natacha Bustos, Tamra Bonvillain

So i’ve dropped some books in my personal Marvel ban, and I will be avoiding anything remotely related to Secret Empire like the plague, and I still encourage other people to do the same. But there are some books, some ideas, some diversity in the Marvel lineup that for me are simply just too important to throw out with the bathwater.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is 1000% a book I want to survive Marvel’s current tirefire.

And since Marvel curiously made it clear that they were going to throw their diversity titles under the bus and blame them for any loss of sales this summer just before knowingly putting out a terribly controversial book, I can’t help but allow my suspicions to rise.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur continues to be the best of the genre and the first book I recommend to kids -- which is something I do quite a lot. If you’ve been following my blog for a while you’ll know that I am very active in trying to get new, young readers into comics and have personally given out comics to kids in and out of the country. It’s something that is very important to me, having been raised with comics myself.

So I am very happy to go back on my word for titles like Moon Girl and I’m so glad that a book so inviting and loving is around in the disaster that is the larger comic landscape for the Marvel Universe.

DC’s Wonder Woman (2016- ) #21 Greg Rucka, Liam Sharp, Laura Martin

Considering how vocally I have been annoyed with the “B story” of this Wonder Woman run thus far, it’s a real relief to finally be able to say, as the storylines converge and we come sadly closer to the end of Rucka’s return to Wonder Woman, finally this slow burn has been worth it. And this moment I chose in particular -- Veronica Cale at long last taking Diana’s hand -- is so built up, is so necessary that it makes everything truly feel like it’s deservedly come full circle.

And Cale’s motivations in Rebirth fit so much better than they did in the Post-Crisis comics, it makes everything about this confrontation and this conclusion worthwhile.

Though there’s still a lot to be fixed in terms of Rucka’s more... tone deaf treatment of earlier racist tropes and so on that have proven to be basically completely unnecessary to this plot. That’s a pretty gross road to end up going down for no reason.

And finally we get to Ares. And maybe it’s the animal lover in me but I’m like “those poor Dobermen, hope they still have a home with Cale after the twin gods’ souls are released.

... Look we all know I’m going to pick Detective Comics for my pick of the week this week because I’m a sheep and it hit everything I wanted from an issue of Detective Comics including giving us more Cass-Ballerina action and having a fanciful callout to Phantom of the Opera that made my heart soar.

But I would, for this week, also like to provide a secondary pick for Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur for being not just a fantastic book (which it is) but continuing to provide a bright light at the end of a very, very long and dark tunnel that is the Marvel Universe. It is the Marvel of tomorrow if they could just stop with their bullshit. Which, because it’s Marvel, they probably won’t.

But these are just my thoughts and opinions, I’d love to hear from all of you. What did you think of this week? Any good titles I’m not picking up? I’d love to hear from you

13 reasons why – it’s trash

13 minutes in and I’m ready to watch something else. Now before everyone gets all in a huff, here are a few things you should know. When I first saw anything about this show, I was trying to watch something else when the preview played. I watched a few seconds and felt like it was something like the ghost whisperer, but with a guy as the main protagonist and just one ghost. After seeing it a couple of times, I felt maybe it was like the movie The Invisible (2007), which I very much enjoyed. Then I started seeing friends mention it on social media; so I finally decided to actually read the synopsis. It caught my attention. It helped that I skimmed over a few reviews about it. As someone who has depression, I felt a show that was said to properly go over it and suicide may be worth a try. I went in with a positive vibe and oblivious that it’s a book and who directed the show. I watched all the episodes and tried to be objective the entire time. So without further ado, here is why I believe this show is trash.

Spoilers - of course

I’ll start off with what’s wrong with the main characters and story plot, but first here’s something on a positive note; they did a great job portraying how insensitive and self-involved today’s youth is with the stupid hashtag #NeverForget while taking selfies in front of someone’s memorial. It’s in the same poor taste as taking a selfie at an open casket funeral. Now, Hannah, could they have made the main character any less likable? There’s probably a better word, but this gets my point across faster. She’s a Bitch. Her character tropes are a victim’s mentality, bullying, and selfishness. In the first episode, she claims the reason she made the tapes was so that no one will take her for granted and so they will suffer, because she killed herself. To say that a group of people are responsible for a choice you made is extremely selfish and falls into that whole victim’s mentality I was talking about. With those tapes, you can see she accomplished exactly what she wanted. These kids were spiraling out of control; even the one person she felt was a good guy. Some of them almost committed suicide themselves. It’s an awful thing to do. Pass the suffering to someone else. With that mentality, you might as well contract an STD and pass it along too. If I’m suffering, so should everyone else I believe has ever wronged me. There is a huge list of things wrong with the type of person Hannah is, like sexist remarks she makes, but that’s not what this review is about.

There are only two people I feel hold some sort of responsibly (but not really) for her suicide, Bryce and Mr. Porter. Seems like with everyone else, it was something she could have confronted them about and a lot of things could have been resolved. If not, well at least she would have actually tried to do something about it and not just jump to conclusions. Also, reporting the sexual harassment she was going through would have helped quite a bit. Even if the school didn’t do anything about it, her parents were EXTREMELY supportive and would have helped her. I said extremely in all caps, because normal lettering wouldn’t emphasize that enough. I honestly don’t see how she felt they weren’t there for her. Anyways, this girl witnessed someone she once called a best friend getting raped and did absolutely nothing about it. She then gets raped by the same guy and still decides to do nothing about it. When she finally does, she half asses it and expects Mr. Porter to pry it from her. I do feel he should have noticed something was extremely wrong and reported it for her. If he had placed her on suicide watch, told her parents, and the school administration, she probably wouldn’t have killed herself. However, as her dad said in episode 10, even if some things were different such as school or someone being aware that she felt suicidal, it may not have changed the fact that she would kill herself. She wants everyone around her to immediately know what’s wrong and come to her rescue. When they don’t, because often people have a lot going on in their own life, she immediately blames them for her suffering. This is why I don’t think anyone is responsible for her suicide. Bryce and Mr. Porter had a huge impact, but in the end she made the choice to not fight. People, if you don’t speak up you can’t expect anyone to know what you’re going through. You have to DO and SAY something in order for anything to change for the better.

Clay, another character you should like, but is honestly annoying. Yes, he’s sweet and cared a lot about Hannah, even though she would constantly belittle him. He obviously has his own set of problems. Taking on the blame for Hannah’s death, then trying to blindly take revenge on everyone who was mentioned on the tapes is where he loses me. Luckily, Zach’s character shows how someone with a victim’s mentality can see the world. Yes taking her notes “secretly” given to her by Clay (she’s seen him drawing and even calls him Picasso) was a bit childish, but how was he supposed to know how much it was really hurting her? The note she made for him was a good choice on her part and a step in the right direction. It’s just a shame she “saw” him throw it away. This shows how heavily they’re relying on the stereotype that people with depression always feel like the victim. Poor representation is my main reason for disliking this show. Now back to Clay. The only thing he did that was smart was getting Bryce’s confession. Not turning in the tapes to Hannah’s parents or the police was a mistake, which Tony fixed. Taking a nude photo of Tyler and spreading it was also a bad choice. At first you have the impulse to support him on the decision, but is it really a solution? Bully a bully and the cycle just continues. It doesn’t make you any better than them and doesn’t help anyone. Everyone else who listened to the tapes before Clay, at that point are now all guilty of the crime. They had knowledge of a rape and did nothing about it. Then they just casually threw in murder as a solution to hide a rape. I had to stop myself there and remember that these are all high school students. They’re supposed to be super dumb and irresponsible, make stupid group decisions to not say anything out of their own guilt. That’s sarcasm, in case you missed it. Even though they hold zero responsibility for her death, they feel it would ruin them. In a sense it would, but there isn’t really anything that can legally be done to most of them, such as Zach, Ryan, Jessica, or Courtney. That is, before they listened to the tapes and did nothing about it, then lied when asked about certain events.

This show was very slow to watch. It dragged on with some details I feel weren’t necessary. It made a terrible portrayal of someone who is Latinx/Hispanic and lives in “the ghetto”. It has your stereotypical high school jocks and popular group. Stereotypical is the entire show. It feels like they were trying too hard to be progressive and hip to the point that it felt unnatural and extremely forced. My biggest issue: it DOES NOT properly portray what a person with depression goes through on a day to day basis. It’s an insult to portray those who’ve attempted/thought about suicide and to those who have an everyday battle with depression as someone who is selfish and vindictive as Hannah. Of course I have to remember that seems to be what this show is about, stereotypes and over the top characters.

This show throws the wrong message out there. Think about it. There are tons of kids (under 18) who are going to or have watched this show. I want to say 70% of them are going through depression. Why do I think they have some form of depression? To put it simply, there’s something about being represented that makes people want to watch. However, here you have a show that is telling them, hey, it’s totally fine to kill yourself. Just make sure that after you die, others will definitely suffer for it. Make sure you go out with a bang so that no one can forget about you. Teach them a lesson. WHAT? Yes, that is exactly what this show says. You have a girl who had EXTREMELY supportive parents, lived a life that’s an upper middle class, and had plenty of people she could have talked to. Her parents got a new car so she could go to a stupid dance. It wasn’t even prom or anything. Which I still say is overrated. She had a pretty good life. If someone who had all of those advantages couldn’t keep it together, why should anyone who is worse off? Why should any of us try to stay alive anymore? Why should we seek help? Obviously, there is no other way out.

No. A thousand times NO! That should not be what kids or people in general take away from a show like this, but it is. I felt sick after watching it. It didn’t properly portray someone with a mental illness, it portrayed selfishness. It made it ok to kill yourself as long as there were repercussions for everyone that you felt wronged you. It made it seem that there was no other way to seek justice for being wronged in any way. It said it’s normal to convince your friends to murder someone in order to cover up another crime. It said its fine to fall into substance abuse if you live in a bad household or put yourself in a harmful situation as long as you get the truth out. It made an eye for an eye ok. The actors are saying that people like me -who are calling the show out - say that it romanticizes suicide because we don’t want to talk about or see it… let that set in. They didn’t deny that it romanticizes suicide, they just said it’s being talked about in a negative manner to avoid the topic of suicide. That is not what I’m talking about. That’s not what a lot of people are talking about. It’s the fact that they are indeed romanticizing the act of suicide as a way to get back at those who “wronged” you. They made suicide into a form of revenge. I didn’t see that coming, what a great plot twist.

The scene in question that a lot of people are having trouble with is her suicide. I honestly don’t have a problem with it, other than it seems over the top. People are saying it triggers others into wanting to commit suicide. I don’t think it’s the act itself. I believe it all comes down to the reason she did it, revenge. Who doesn’t want to get back at those who made you feel like crap? What a better way to get payback; make them feel as though they murdered me. After all that’s what happened, if they hadn’t been so mean and ignored me when I needed help. Again, that’s sarcasm. For those who will say “a show can’t make you kill yourself”, your right. Nothing can make you kill yourself. It’s your decision, but things can definitely influence a person towards that decision. Which is why it’s irresponsible and selfish to put all the blame of your suicide onto someone else; basically, saying they murdered you. Hannah is saying that from the very beginning. She is blaming all these people for her decision and practically calling them her murderers. Unless they actively told her to kill herself and their main goal was to cut her down until she actually did it, then it’s no one’s fault but her own.

Now I hear that it got a green light for a second season…wow. So a show that only made me cry for the parents, because I could care less about the main protagonist, is getting a second season? I have a strong feeling it’s because they want to see if there was another suicide or if it was murder. All of this wouldn’t be so bad if they hadn’t tried to sell the show as realistic and proper portrayal of depression, mental illness, and suicide. If they had sold it as a drama and just that, it wouldn’t have been as bad. After all, that’s what it is, a teen drama. Not a ground breaking show. I found out Selena Gomez directed it after finishing the series and suddenly it made sense. That was the reason so many people were flocking to watch this awful show. All of her fans ignorantly liking and supporting it in order to support her. That’s just the cherry on top of this shit Sunday. Seems that’s all it takes these days. Put a popular celebrity name into something “controversial” and suddenly it’s getting tons of positive attention.

If you want to watch a show that properly and realistically shows depression, mental illness, suicide, sexual orientation, body issues, abortion, and tons of other things “controversial” watch My Mad fat diary. If you google it, for some stupid reason, it’s under a comedy. It has some funny moments, but I wouldn’t call it a comedy. Its synopsis says “a teenager struggles with body issues and a desire to have sex”. Yes that is in part of what the show is about, but it’s so much more. My mad fat diary ended in 2015, two years ahead of 13 reasons why, yet not too many people know about it. This is a perfect example as to how having a celebrity name can push an undeserving show forward. The only celebrity Americans will know about in this show is Ian Hart aka Prof. Quirrel from Harry Potter. Unfortunately, he wasn’t enough to get the attention this show deserved. I think the fact that it’s a British show also has something to do with it. My Mad fat diary deserves to be on top of the list for addressing issues like these. The ending actually makes sense and gives a positive and realistic message, unlike the joke of a show 13 reasons why.

With all that being said, please don’t be afraid to look for help. Suicide isn’t the answer. Don’t give up hope and keep fighting. Here is the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline
