Just started re-watching one of my oldest fandom sources, the 1990s Canadian vampire show Forever Knight. It's still fantastic and alluring, but one of the things that really has changed for me is my view of Dr. Natalie Lambert, the human coroner for the City of Toronto who is attempting to find a cure for vampirism for the eponymous character, Nick Knight, a 13th century vampire who wallows in Romantic agonies for the thousands of people he's killed.

Now, when I was a teenager, I hated Natalie. There are a couple of reasons for this, but mostly I shipped Nick and Lucien Lacroix, his vampire maker/master/father, who the show very clearly sets up as both a familial *and* romantic match to Nick (in a subtextual 90s kind of way), as well as his frequent foe and foil. Lacroix was a 2000 year old former Roman General with a very sexy voice and a thorough obsession for his vampiric progeny. He was fascinating and exciting, while Natalie was frankly a bit of a nag who nagged more frequently as the show progressed.

Watching it now, though.... Natalie is clever and funny, with an engaging scientific curiosity. Most significantly, she is clearly working at a disadvantage because Nick only ever claims to want a cure for his state, while often working at cross purposes with her efforts to help him. She spends most of her (very scarce) free time engineering dietary supplements for Nick while attempting to formulate a kind of vampire vaccine. Nick spends half of his time spitting out what she makes him, and when he does take her concoctions, he often ignores her detailed instructions on how to safely act with his altered or reduced abilities. He also frequently goes back to his vampire sister/lover Janette, while concealing this from Natalie. As for his relationship with Lacroix, he interacts with him frequently, going to him for help and support, while only conveying the worst of their relationship to Natalie, leading her to believe that he hates his maker unequivocally, when that clearly isn't the case.

As for the aforementioned nagging, Natalie had a right to it! Nick frankly leads her on for the majority of the series, whether consciously or unconsciously, with the notion that someday they can be together. Meanwhile she gets older and older, and has to demand more attention from a man who is so ambivalent and perpetually dissatisfied that he eventually finds fault with everyone close to him.

Poor Nat. You didn't deserve your...Last Knight.

i don't really like when people say dungeon meshi is accidentally good autistic representation, because while i understand not wanting to make conclusions without explicit confirmation from the author, there's always the weird assumption that non-western authors somehow don't know about things like neurodivergency/queerness/etc. (on top of the assumptions that east asian authors are somehow more naive or oblivious to "western" social issues).

given that dungeon meshi started being published in 2014, it's not really a "work belonging to its times"—it's as contemporary as any other media we discuss on this site, which means it should be fair to assume it engages with contemporary topics (and at the very least, you shouldn't say that the representation is accidental with so much confidence)

but anyways, the chapter "perfect communication" in ryoko kui's "terrarium in a drawer" is some of the most straightforward autistic representation I've seen, and from now on I'm going to assume that laios's character writing is absolutely intentional in that regard:

Folks talking about Game Devs dropping Unity or how it won't hurt small indie devs with under 200,000. Are missing the point.

Some of these Unity games can't change to another engine because they have years of code piled on top of each other at this point. aka POKEMON GO. They'd basically have to rebuild the game from scratch.

Not to mention Unity is mostly used by phone app games or Indie's that are lucky enough to get picked up by console. Indie games on Mobile easily pass 200,000 downloads. Temple Run 1 and 2 are in Unity, Crossy Road, Angry birds 1 and 2, and Hearthstone. All of these past 200,000 downloads years ago but aren't bringing in money now except hearthstone.

The Developers will do what happened to the first Angry birds app. They'll take it down, build it in a new engine for "HD", and add a shit ton of micro transactions. We are about to lose countless original versions of the OG pre lootbox mobile games.

We are also about to lose some of the biggest Indie games of the last decade. Among Us, Plague Inc., 7 Days to die, the original Slenderman game and it's sequel, I am Bread, Ori and the Blind Forest, Dream Daddy, Overcooked 1 & 2, Pathfinder online, Cup Head, Bendy and the Ink Machine, Oxygen Not Included, Bloons Tower Defense 6, Beat Saber, Subnautica, The Stanley Parable, Untitled Goose Game, Power Washing Simulator, Fall Guys, Inscryption, Phasmophobia

And the big one FUCKING HOLLOW KNIGHT. Silk song has already been pushed back out of this year specifically because it's being made by a team of like 3 people. It is so close to being finished and now they are being told they have to start over from scratch basically. Hollow Knight got over 200,000 downloads from being on playstation and was eventually put on Playstations subscription service. Every cent they made from hollow knight has gone back into making silk song. Which might now be delayed by multiple years and oh they are going to have to use some of that funds to pay unity now. Or find a way to get out of a contract with playstation. Because folks will keep downloading Hollow Knight for free and Unity will send the Hollow Knight team the bill.

oh and there's one more teeny tiny game made in Unity that you guys might not want to suddenly disappear. One with almost 3 years of monthly code updates, one with 139 million downloads to date, and 4.8 million monthly users.

Genshin. Guys Genshin Impact is made completely in Unity and that's not a game that can have it's code just copy and pasted to another engine.
