#my Lotr heart is expanding
Someone asked me to expand a little on a topic that was buried down in a big chain of reblogs, so I'm doing that here--it's about the use of the archaic "thee", "thou", "thy", etc. in LOTR and what it tells you about characters’ feelings for one another. (I am NOT an expert on this, so it's just what I've picked up over time!)
Like many (most?) modern English speakers, I grew up thinking of those old forms of 2nd person address as being extra formal. I think that's because my main exposure to them was in the Bible ("thou shall not...") and why wouldn't god, speaking as the ultimate authority, be using the most formal, official voice? But it turns out that for a huge chunk of the history of the English language, "thee," "thou," and "thy" were actually the informal/casual alternatives to the formal "you", “your”, “yours”. Like tú v. usted in Spanish!
With that in mind, Tolkien was very intentional about when he peppered in a "thee" or a "thou" in his dialogue. It only happens a handful of times. Most of those are when a jerk is trying to make clear that someone else is beneath them by treating them informally. Denethor "thou"s Gandalf when he’s pissed at him. The Witch King calls Éowyn "thee" to cut her down verbally before he cuts her down physically. And the Mouth of Sauron calls Aragorn and Gandalf "thou" as a way to show them that he has the upper hand. (Big oops by all 3 of these guys!)
The other times are the opposite--it's when someone starts to use the informal/casual form as a way to show their feeling of affection for someone else. Galadriel goes with the formal "you" all through the company's days in Lórien, but by the time they leave she has really taken them to heart. So when she sends them a message via Gandalf early in the Two Towers, she uses "thee" and "thou" in her words to Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli because now they're valued friends and allies. And--this is the big one, folks, that was already alluded to in my previous post--Éowyn starts aggressively "thou"ing Aragorn when she is begging him to take her along as he prepares to ride out of Dunharrow. She is very intentionally trying to communicate her feelings to him in her choice of pronoun--an "I wouldn't be calling you "thee" if I didn't love you" kind of thing. And he is just as intentionally using "you" in every single one of his responses in order to gently establish a boundary with her without having to state outright that he doesn't reciprocate her feelings. It's not until much later when her engagement to Faramir is announced that Aragorn finally busts out "I have wished thee joy ever since I first saw thee". Because now it is safe to acknowledge a relationship of closeness and familiarity with her without the risk that it will be misinterpreted. He absolutely wants to have that close, familiar relationship, but he saved it for when he knew she could accept it on his terms without getting hurt.
So, you know, like all things language-based...Tolkien made very purposeful decisions in his word choices down to a bonkers level of detail. I didn’t know about this pronoun thing until I was a whole ass adult, but that’s the joy of dealing with Tolkien. I still discover new things like this almost every time I re-read.

How would the fellowship confess to their crush??? 🤭🤭 ty<3
oh hoo yes ma'am/sir/friend 😌 the pleasure is all mine! Expanding this to everyone cuz I wanna as always & incorporating some TH fanon (?) lmao
How LoTR Characters Confess to You
Aragorn
Upon your ride into battle he would hardly be parted from you, and you him, so it suited you very well to remain alongside the Three Hunters. Gimli had quickly leapt from his mount, axe blazing in what little daylight remained, and Legolas had not strayed too far behind. Aragorn had become surrounded in that time, crowds of striking enemies surrounded. With a cry, you charged through them, alerting numerous other fighters to your rapidly growing cause. All but seeing red, you fought hard, leaving none spared until your dear friend was safe again. When you dismounted, Aragorn pulled you aside under the guise of checking your wounds. "What would you have done if none joined you?" At that question, you smiled. "I had faith. But had that faith failed, I still would have rode to you." Steady though his gaze was, his hand briefly faltered before it took yours. "As would I for you, my love," he replies and you feel a tug, giving in to the sweat and adrenaline and letting him pull you into his lips.
Legolas
"What are you thinking of?" The words almost startled you, turning your head swiftly to face the woodland prince striding over, that curious look alighting his dark eyes. Heat crept to your face, for your thoughts were hardly ones you would have shared with the object of your feelings. "The future," you replied. Not entirely a lie. Legolas's brows knit. "Uncertainty? Even in these times, there is hope. For you especially, I think there is brightness ahead yet." His words bring the pensive downward tug of your face back up into joy. "Really? And why is that?" You cannot help asking, unsure what Legolas sees for you when it is so unclear for yourself. "Meleth nîn, you care so deeply for others and yet so little for yourself. All that you bring into this world is that brightness. Whether it is to others or you keep it to yourself...or even a family." A look of...questioning? Bashfulness? illuminates the elf's face. "Perhaps I have my own dreams for your future. I am sorry." At once you rose, throwing your arms around his neck. "Do not be. Perhaps our thoughts were more alike than I realized!"
Boromir
“I thought I would never see you again.” “Don’t say that,” you shake your head, peering tearfully down at Boromir. His wounds were grave, far beyond anything you thought he could have survived, and yet there he remained. Hardly had you left his side, even sleeping there with his gloved hand in yours, hoping against all hope. By the Valar’s grace did he speak to you, his voice a low rasp that had you leaning in even closer. “No, it is true. For all my thoughts of Gondor, of laying eyes upon the white towers glistening in the sun once more, I thought of you also. At what pain would it be that I never see you again. I would be a fool if I never spoke my love to you.” Tears rush again to your eyes, this time with the soar of your heart as you grip Boromir’s hand tighter, leaning down to stroke his cheek and finally press your lips to his.
Gimli
“I…got you something.” Pausing, you swivel back to face Gimli, taking a step closer and seeing the way his eyes bore into yours. “‘Tis nothing so fair as you deserve, but, well, I hope you might think to accept it.” Your brows furrow a bit as you tell him whatever it is, you’ll surely treasure his gift. Smiling bashfully, the dwarf extends a hand and produces a beautifully engraved bead. The writing is unmistakable, a short Khuzdûl inscription, and on either end lies a tiny cut of your favorite stone. “Gimli, this is beautiful,” you breathe, eyes wide and shining. “Not half so as you,” he shoots back, lashes fluttering a bit, “do you know what it is?” You smile. “Yes.” “Are you sure?” “Yes,” you repeat, leaning down to rest your forehead against his.
Frodo
So long. So long has it been since he has seen you. He has no right to you, not such as the dear hopes falling almost silently from his lips that you had waited for him. Especially having been given nothing to wait for! Yet upon return to the Shire, much as Sam’s is of Rosie Cotton, Frodo’s first thought is of you. The first night he returns to the Green Dragon with his beloved friends, celebrating adventure and pain and wonder and darkness and light beyond their wildest nightmares and dreams, Frodo’s eyes meet yours. Before he can wonder what to say you’re dropping the spoon that was in your hand and rushing over to him, falling into his arms and nestling into his embrace. “I missed you,” you say, and those three words are all it takes for something to snap in Frodo’s heart. “And I you. More than missed you, I saw you like a guiding light, a beacon in darkness. All the time I was away I loved you.”
Sam
He’ll confess nowhere but the most beautiful spot he can find, that’s for certain! Sam leads you eagerly to the Shire’s finest garden, taking your hand softly to guide you beneath an arching trellis covered in sweet pea blossom. “I knew I had to take you here,” Sam tells you, reaching down to take both of your hands. You feel a flush of heat under his sweet gaze. “Why is that?” “Well, it’s the perfect place to tell you how long I’ve loved you. Surrounded by all these beautiful flowers and yet I’ve got the best one.” “I don’t know about that,” you tell him, almost losing your composure at the way his face falls before you continue, “I think I do.” Blooming across Sam’s face is the purest look of pleasant surprise, and you can’t resist cupping his cheeks before the both of you close the gap completely.
Merry
Beautiful accident. That was the phrase you had heard so often used, and such was it. One last stand had been gathered, one final fight for Frodo, and you were rising to the occasion, though not without protest. “They want me to stay behind,” you complained to your dear friend Merry, “but my leg is mostly healed. Only illness or grievous injury could prevent me from joining everyone I love in defense of this world.” At that, the hobbit grinned. “That’s why I love you.” Stunned, you gaped at his flippant confession, watching his own jaw fall open in shocked pause. Smiling, you grabbed him by the shoulders and pulled him in for a searing kiss, uncaring of the way your armor clanked together or the jolt of pain in your side with the sudden motion. The feeling of Merry’s lips against yours claimed all your head and heart.
Pippin
Confesses his feelings quite unexpectedly in Lothlórien. Long have your days been and heavenly is it to have some rest. Pippin remains there at your side as you take in the astounding city in the trees, and again when you retire for the evening, taking to your makeshift quarters. You speak there, sighing and recounting without many words all that the journey has brought you through. "More than we ever would have dared imagine has happened, even just in the past few days," you comment. "Yes," Pippin agrees, fixing you deeply with his green eyes, "but one thing has come from that." "What?" You ask. "Telling someone I love them doesn't seem so scary now." He pauses, searches the surprise on your face. "You don't- you don't have to-" His words are utterly cut off, though, by the passionate fall of your lips upon his.
Faramir
What place is more wondrous than a library? None for you, thank you. Faramir was well used to finding you there and soon joining you, poring over books from his childhood and whatever dusty tome you insisted on dragging out next, grinning at the way he chuckles. He knows it’s the very place to tell you how he feels, having found the perfect way to do it. It begins with a tale of two lovers, simple as that. He means to ask your thoughts on it but you give them freely. “This is a favorite of mine. How I long to live in such a story as this one,” you sigh at the sight of it. “And how I long to give that to you,” Faramir replied simply, hand creeping toward yours across the illuminated pages.
Eomer
Comes running to you before anything else after a battle. Panting, he stops before you, eyes wide. Concern cuts across your face at the sight of him there, sweat still upon his brow and chest heaving beneath his armor. You say his name, ask it more like a question, and he slides his helmet off, giving you a better look at his intent visage. Before you can speak further, his hands are upon your waist, pulling you into him as his lips collide with yours. Even beneath the salt of his exhaustion, you can taste him, feel the fervor until he pulls away, eyes glistening with pride. “We won!” Hand on your hip, you fix him with a look. “Will you celebrate with me, my love?”
Haldir
Retiring to the meadows was a favorite pastime of yours, taking time to yourselves beneath the gentle brush of the breeze. Pensive as ever, Haldir stares off at seemingly nothing, brows knit. Laying a hand upon his arm, you stir him from his thoughts with a look as your gazes join. His eyes search yours, you nod encouragingly. Haldir tucks the flower he’d been twirling idly between his fingers and tucks it behind your ear. “You can imagine what has been on my mind, I trust.” Attempting to lighten whatever clouds rolled across his mind, you nudge him, smiling. “Not at all! You are a mystery as always. Proceed.” “Have I not made it clear that I am in love with you?” Feeling heat surge to your face at the intensity of his words, you let yourself get swept up in emotion, smiling and tucking a strand of golden hair behind his ear. “Well, perhaps we should make it even clearer.”
Eowyn
Eowyn is so giving and caring to you, you feel as though your heart might burst. She cooks for you even if it isn’t the best, bless her. She gives you extra blankets when you’re cold, defends you against the slightest of negative words. Never leaves your side, fights for you in every sense you could state it. So of course you thank her, tell her again and again that you do not know what you’d do without her. That her gracious heart is a true gift. But one day? One day you question instead. “Why,” you ask, “do you give so much? Sometimes I feel I have so little to offer in return.” “Do you not know?” She replies in earnest, blue eyes shining. “Are you not aware I love you?” Fear colors her words. She wants to be enough, you realize. All her actions were to show you that. Caressing her cheeks, you tell her that she is all you could have wanted and more, smiling into the kiss you share.
Arwen
Memories abound as Arwen makes her feelings known. “Do you recall when my father first summoned you here?” “Yes,” you giggle, “I told him his home looks like a painting!” “He was charmed by that,” she assured you, “as was I. When I first saw you, I knew you were different. Not just as one from outside our borders, but that you brought some quite splendor.” Heart struck by her words, you try to even half-echo Arwen’s compliments. “I felt the same. There you were practically glowing as you welcomed me, beauty and strength beyond that of this world. Now that I know you, such is only multiplied, tenfold when one sees your heart.” Blue eyes swimming, Arwen embraces you, whispering her love for you in her native tongue.
Elrond
This is a private conversation. Thus Elrond leads you upon the most peaceful night of the season to a bridge beneath the stars. Twinkle as they do from their home far above your heads, the stars are the last thing to gain Elrond’s focus, his attention affixed solely upon your eyes. “You have drawn my thoughts more and more of late, meleth nîn.” “Oh?” You inquire simply, summoning a chuckle from deep in Elrond’s chest. “Indeed you have,” he lays a hand upon yours, “for to know you has been one of the greatest honors afforded to me. I care about you.” You mirror his soft smile when your name escapes his lips, gentle as a wish. “Then it is as I could only have dreamed,” you reply.
Lindir
Playing the most heart-wrenchingly gorgeous melody you’ve ever heard, Lindir watches you the entire time. Heart aflutter, you send him a smile and he looks pleased. Upon finishing, he strides over, looking with amusement at the little applause you give him. Words pour forth from you before you even realized you’ve formulated them, gushing again and again about the way his song touched you. “To know such love…what a dream,” you sigh. Lindir almost starts at that, raising his eyebrows. “Well, the song was about you, you know.”

A03 meme
A03 meme time, except I've been writing and posting fanfic to the internet since before A03. And before fanfiction.net. And before Geocities. And before the World Wide Web. There's fic of mine with ASCII doodle illustrations somewhere out there where the wild BBSes once roamed…I was tagged by @moveslikebucky; thanks Buckie, here goes. <3
how many works do you have on Ao3? 54. (and yes if we added in all the fanfic outside of A03 it'd be a larger number but I can't be bothered to consolidate it all)
what’s your total Ao3 word count? 341,744, which is better than I was expecting, yay.
what fandoms do you write for? At the moment it's just Good Omens, but there's been a lot of Dragon Age, some Lord of the Rings, and way back in the day there was Harry Potter and a lot of anime. I am toying with dipping my toe back in LotR, there's a thing I wrote ages ago that's entirely finished and just needs editing and I've been meaning to get it out there for ages. It's long though, so that'd be a commitment.
what are your top five fics by kudos? What Custom Strictly Divided (507) Like an Echo Far Away (415) (this one wasn't in the top five last week when I first started writing this post! So I think @mielpetite gets all the credit for boosting it with amazing fanart) What Comes From Your Hand (402) Give Me Your Illusions (346) Nightswimming (307)
do you respond to comments? Yep! Sometimes just with "Thanks!" or hearts but I try to. Though they get away from me sometimes and then I do a bunch all at once.
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Definitely Warmaiden, which is my "What if Éowyn got the One Ring?" fic, from an idea that occurred to me one day and wouldn't leave. Clearly that doesn't end well for her, or anyone. From GO fandom it's probably Silent Night, which I still want to expand into a larger fic to be a set with Give Me Your Illusions. Someday, someday.
What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Most of them! But for the happiest I'd say Swan Lake Revised, cowritten with @mostlyjustgoose. And if we ever get part three up it'll be even more happy. And smutty. Very smutty.
Do you get hate on fics? Very rarely. I've been lucky there.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Oh here's the irony. I used to do a lot a lot a LOT of online roleplaying and mygod I wrote smut. So much. So. Much. I don't do as much rp these days but even so the threads I have going are still frequently pure filth. But in fic, much less so, even though I want to. Why it all gets channeled into rp and not as much into my fanfic I do not know. Honestly I want to write a lot more of it. Smut forever!!
Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? Sometimes, when I have a good idea. But the craziest one I ever wrote, ages ago, was a pure crackfic for my 21st birthday, where I imagined a bizarre party for myself in which LOADS of fictional characters (mostly from anime) showed up so I could make them interact in wacky ways. It was utterly ridiculous but amused me. Making all the characters voiced by Megumi "She's Everywhere!!" Hayashabara meet up and wonder why they all sound alike, for example. Also I wish I'd written an Artemis Fowl breaks into Gringotts to rob it fic before I became so disillusioned with both Artemis Fowl and Harry Potter. Heigh ho.
Have you ever had a fic stolen? Yep. It was impressive how lazy the person was about it too, they stole all the html as well. Someone brought it to my attention pretty quickly.
Have you ever had a fic translated? Twice, yes. Into Portuguese, as I remember.
Have you ever co-written a fic before? Hi @mostlyjustgoose, I adore you, please co-write things with me forever. <3 Our baby is Unusual Strings, a reverse omens AU love story, and it's SO. CLOSE. to being done. So close. Aughhhh. I love our angel!Crowley and demon!Aziraphale so, so much.
What’s your all time favorite ship? Aziraphale and Crowley, Faramir and Éowyn, Hiccup and Astrid. Don't make me choose between those three, my head will explode.
What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Shut up shut up I will finish all of them ALL OF THEM I SAY…sigh. Beauty and the Battousai. Though I should probably mention A Demon in the Dreaming and The Queen Bee. (they're plotted and outlined and parts are written aaahhh come on ADHD meds help me out here)
What are your writing strengths? Dialogue, definitely. I'm good at putting humour into things. Got compared to Patricia Wrede once and honestly, life goal achieved there. I can do memorable phrases and descriptions and edit well.
What are your writing weaknesses? What is plot. Why does it hate me. Why are my original characters one-dimensional cardboard. What is worldbuilding and how do I do it without getting stalled into paralysis. Baaaah. This is why my original novel will never be finished and I keep running back to fanfic instead.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? Hoo boy contentious subject! I love reading it so long as it's translated somewhere in the footnotes, I'd be happy to write it if I knew other languages, the question of whether it should be italicized or not has apparently Officially been settled by The Publishing Industry on the side of Not.
First fandom you wrote for? Oh gosh I think it was the Dragonlance books by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. The first that ever got shown to other people was Ranma 1/2 though.
Favorite fic you’ve written? It's still What Custom Strictly Divided. Though Unusual Strings comes very close.
Gaaah I'm always worried I'll tag people who don't want to be tagged so, erk, um...if they're willing, @racketghost, @indieninja92, and @holycatsandrabbits! And you, if you're reading and want to do this, please say I tagged you. I meant to really, honest. ;)

Lil rant (MAYBE PJATO SHOW SPOILERS?)
Lots of opinions up ahead so uh, look out.
I’m watching the PJATO show and I really love some parts. The casting—they’re all wonderful (literally everyone, Mr D is hilarious) and any fears I had have been quelled because they’re all amazing and the trio fit their characters well (even IRL and they’re so precious). Camp Half Blood — so well done. The cabins are huge, the colosseum is just what I imagined, and they really did great on making it properly large and vibrant. I love it. Some of the extra beats they’ve added to make it better expanded beyond the strictly Percy POV in the book have been good. Annabeth and Grover chucking Percy into a fountain to try to heal him was hilarious and totally in character—probably my favorite part so far. Also: AHHHH SEAWEED BRAIN!
But is anyone just feeling… like the pacing is super slow? Like I get that us “zoomers” have tiny attention spans and stuff but “The Horse and His Boy” was my favorite Narnia book and I read LOTR when I was 11 so I don’t think my attention span is quite so bad. These kids got ADHD and it feels like every talk and every scene just drags. Every time I think the energy is gonna rise, it gets smacked back down by lackluster scene climaxes. Again, I’m not trying to say we need more explosions or booms or arguments, just that I]it isn’t even remotely eliciting the same kind of goose-pimple/heart thumping moments I remember from the books. I reread them constantly and it’s always thrilling.
And the music… someone I was watching it with said it sounded like generic Marvel music, and they’re kinda right. I can’t remember a single note from the score at all, and I’m always listening to movie/TV scores because they’re like listening to the story in music format! PJATO’s score though? Can’t even remember it. I can’t remember any of it even being used in certain places. I thought they’d try to get older instrumentals to make it unique, like lyre AND electric guitar in the mix, but honestly I can’t even remember what it sounds like. That’s bad, right?
[[EDIT: I just looked up the score on Spotify and it was literally made by the people who did the “God of War” game score. There’s no freakin way this music is bad. I’m gonna listen to it alone later. Maybe it’s just set really low in the mix… ]]
The “death” of Sally Jackson was so lackluster. Just a standard medium long shot, can’t even remember if the music flourished or dropped or anything. Their acting was great, but it was framed so poorly that it just felt… idk…
The pacing feels like it’s something I would do as an amateur who doesn’t yet understand how to edit on my first few write-up’s of a script. I’m not trying to be mean or unfair because I REALLY wanna love this show and I genuinely love a lot of stuff about it and I can tell that so many people are working so hard on it, but holy moly I feel my brain begging for someone to do something impertinent and just slap the show into a roll whenever I’m watching it.
There’s another issue I have with the timing of the most recent episode but I don’t wanna go much further.
Again, this is all opinion and not meant to say anyone shouldn’t like the show or that the people in it are stupid because they aren’t at all and people should like it! I’m just saying that as someone that really appreciated the pacing of the books (that was quick but never sacrificed the storytelling and slowed down when it needed to), I am really feeling that this show isnt shaping up like that. Additional note: I’m not even saying that the pacing of the show needs to BE the pacing of the books. I’m just saying that the pacing of the books is one of the things that made it so good and I really haven’t read many things with pacing of that quality.
Aaaanyway feel free to disagree with me or roast me alive. I just haven’t seen anyone talking about it and I wanted to rant a little and see what other people thought. I’m still gonna keep watching because I think if they can fix the pacing, imma really freaking enjoy this and in case they do, I don’t wanna miss it. And because I’d rather have more PJATO show than less!

Sorry for the length.
Tbh, the only mistake here is the perception of the viewers. Not all friendship are immense or beautiful. Sometimes it's just comradery.
You know why they specifically chose NAKAMA instead of TOMODACHI? Because tomodachi is much closer bond. The latter is not. You can be nakama with someone you're neutral with.
Someone on TLS shared this.
"expand...I'll add that nakama differs from tomodachi (the standard word for friends), and translates to something like close comrades who've shared sufferings / struggled / journeyed together. Like the LOTR fellowship or Ino-Shika-Cho type friends. But yeah, a very strong friendship, nothing romantic. Cloud's heart belongs to Tifa."
What does aerith and cloud have that is real and unique to them? Only two things. ZACK and saving the planet/fighting sephiroth. That's it. I'm sorry but, that's really it.
How come? When aerith was alive, cloud actually tried his best go befriend EVERYONE, in a cute way it could be that he doesn't want to be left out of the circle like when he was a stubborn kid. He's a kind person. But aerith doesn't let him be. He responds to her negatively because she keeps trying to make inappropriate advances on him. Making him act as her stand in boyfriend when he does not consent at all. Aerith took cloud for granted, not the other way around AT ALL.
Now, what does that platonic handhold that's an AC reference about? A line written there , still not sure yet, but it says, "you only think about is yourself, but I will be here for you" coming from aerith. I assume she's the one who held his hand like that. Now KEEP NOTE. Cloud thinks this handhold is platonic, maybe through madam m / the world of FF. I believe aerith still believed that what he did in her gsd is romantic, I really think so. But after being called a NAKAMA, she knows where she stands and the TRUE NATURE of that handhold from cloud. It is just cloud passing on support, giving her strength when she was mopping about Zack" that's why in that scene he looks at her in a way that says "it will be okay, be strong, you got this". Nothing shippy, like ZERO. So the same could be about that AC reference. She is here afterall to pass on what she can give to fight sephiroth and save the planet. Well I sure hope that final handhold comes FROM HER. Otherwise it won't make any sense.
Now, to address all the gsd. Some can say all HA are canon. It shows his progress with everyone. But Cloti gsd is the canon progression of the story.
But let's look here. During aerith's confession, if you get her HA gsd, cloud says "wanting to make more memories" instead of just Nakama. But personally, while that's cool and all, I just find it so out of character because his 2 main bond with her isn't enough to inspire this at all. So I can think it's from the player's perspective. They want to spend more time with her. Like fr, if he really did, how come he almost looks so sick of her in AC? Shouldn't he be glad and excited to see her again? Yet all it is , is just wanting forgiveness? Maybe they'll retcon AC but as of now, it's a bit out of nowhere.
Now, for my last point.
How does aerith become a friend here? Like at all?
-> Well, she said she wanted to get to know him= she realizes he thinks only of her as a comrade
-> "you only think of yourself" during that AC pose = finally awknowledging cloud's rude attitude in HER POV. Even tho she doesn't know he tried his best actually!!!! I guess she was uber BITTER with the word WEIRD. I assume she ignored his rudeness because she was escapist in denial that he can't be her Zack 2.0
-> She says shell be there for him after death, and like I said she should be the one to relay the handhold. This is just her being a comrade-in-arms, they have a huge battle. This is it.
That's it. I can't say it's a beautiful nor deep one, no offense to whoever wants to sprinkle this dynamic with so you can enjoy c/a platonically and have brownie points. I just don't buy it because she never got to be a decent friend to cloud AT ALL. While he's like mostly there because he feels sorry for her. Like no joke.
So what is it then? In his pov? I think it's like Zack. He's also not as close with Zack but his death was painful. Both of these deaths triggers a trauma of NUMEROUS afflictions of cloud. But this two is more painful because it was through specifically their deaths that made him have the life he always wanted with Tifa. Hence the survival 's guilt. So I can say that c/a bond is IMPORTANT, but not as deep nor beautiful. I'm sorry, it really isn't meant to downplay them. But just look at aerith's LSW line, it feels so detached af. Personally I think in AC, he was closer to Zack the most. He is cloud's idol and he knew him while he was real cloud, plus zack didn't try to get in his pants, nor only tried to be a friend after her died. NOPE.

Normally I'd delete this because it's filled with tons of spoilers, but it's just too on point and everybody should read it 👏👏👏

im very new to the fandom (only watched the movies for the first time this year!) and discovering your writing has been life changing. excited to hopefully see more young legolas and family 🩷🩷
Eeek! Anon, I am so happy for you! I think everyone in the LOTR/Tolkien fandom remembers what it was like to experience the magic of the movies and/or the books for the first time, and you're right--it's a life-changing experience! The wonderful thing about Tolkien's world is that it gets better and better the more you dive into it and make new discoveries about the canon.
Tumblr media
I am also so, so, very honored to help usher you into the fandom! I'm glad you like my writings (fics and/or HCs) and hope they continue to bring you joy. There are plenty of amazing creators in the Tolkien fandom, and I hope my blog can also help you find them!
The scope of my writing for the Tolkien fandom has expanded quite a bit since I returned to fanfiction a little over a year ago (you will see me gush and simp over Boromir and Eomer a LOT, for example--don't worry, that's normal(-ish)), but my heart belongs first and foremost to the Elvenking and his family. Writing my SotWK AU stories about Thranduil and his wonderful family and kingdom remains the core of what I do, but working on it feels like wrestling a bear sometimes; the lore I've developed is massive!
Receiving kind words and feedback from people like you is what makes the effort worth it, so I am so grateful--thank you so much for reaching out! <3
You will definitely see more of young Legolas, Good Dad Thranduil, and the rest of the Thranduilions--very soon! :) I'm working on a project that will hopefully bring lots of Christmas cheer to those who need it this time of year. Fingers crossed that the writing energy stays strong!

Meme slang and plural modification of words – how do we pluralize a joke? (A shower thought ramble)
[Plain text: Meme slang and plural modification of words – how do we pluralize a joke? (A shower thought ramble) / end plain text]
Was thinking about a plural version of "gurl" and "boi" today and I think the best option that captures both the one-syllable beat and general vibe of these words is "plurb".
You'd think the best idea would be to simply change one of the vowels like the other words do, but what does that get you? "Plar" sounds too different. "Pler" looks too different. "Plyr" both looks and sounds like a name from LOTR. And of course, "plor" is a word already, meaning "to cry".
However, there is an argument to be made for "plir". It's pronounced the same as "plur", which is a point in its favor, as both "gurl" and "boi" are pronounced the same as their original form. But I present a counterpoint – "plir" does not actually sound at all like its original form, because the word we are trying to meme-ify is "plural", not "plur". Furthermore, as the original word contains two syllables, adding a letter as the end of its slang version (as "plurb" does) allows the word to maintain an illusion of being long enough for two syllables, even if it is only pronounced with one. This puts "plurb" ahead of "plir" when it comes to keeping the spirit of its original word. ... Also, I don't like the look of "plir". It doesn't look like a meme word.
One might bring up concerns that this word would get mistaken for PLURB – a shortening of the slogan "peace, love, unity, respect, and brotherhood." But the more common shortening of this slogan is simply "PLUR", without the B, leaving us free to make all the "plurb help" jokes we wish to.
This whole post is, partly, a joke, but I love expanding language to suit my not-always-serious needs, so I ask you, my dear followers and plural community: will you accept "plurb" into your hearts?

ABOUT ME!
Hi, my name's Poppy and I write (or try to write) fanfiction! As a full-time student, I don't really have a lot of free time on my hands, so my writing schedule is kind of sporadic, but I really enjoy what I do :)
Here's a couple fun facts:
I'm British (so expect slang and a lot of swearing in my more mature fics)
I'm 20 years old
I play the guitar
I'm an amateur boxer and qualified SCUBA diver!
I'm in a BUNCH of fandoms - lotr, marvel, dc, harry potter, supernatural, hannibal just to name a few - and I'm always expanding that list because I just consume media like it's oxygen.
Right now, I have a bunch of on-going projects!
FIC MASTERLIST:
THE BLIND JUSTICE SERIES
This is an MCUxDC cross-over AU where I try to rewrite (basically) the entire marvel cinematic universe, combining it with characters from DC comics too! Because I love superheroes, and I need some of my favourite characters to meet (and shag) more than I need water (reminder to stay hydrated, folks!).
Currently, the series has 6 planned books in total - but only three of them are in the 'writing' stage, and of those three only 1 is my main priority (oops). Anyway, here's the run down:
1. CIRCUS BOY
Tumblr media
Dick Grayson x Peter Parker
❝I fight psycho clowns, dude. I can handle a little crazy❞
When teenage heart-throb Dick Grayson, ward of Bruce Wayne and heir to the Wayne Fortune, meets high school hero Peter Parker out of pure happenstance, things don't quite go to plan. And as their awkward acquaintance begins to expand beyond that of chance meetings... well. Dick might just find out that his place in the food chain isn't quite as cemented as he'd once thought.
Dick Grayson x Peter Parker Spider-Man: Homecoming - ? [Marvel/DC crossover]
READ IT HERE!
2. ABRACADABRA
Tumblr media
❝Unlike you, I actually know the magic words.❞
Zatanna Zatara was a magician. She worked with the impossible, performed the improbable, strayed from the realms of the natural world and worked it to her own whims. But what she couldn't perform were miracles.
Enter Stephen Strange from the stage left, coming to ruin her life one last time.
Zatanna Zatara x Stephen Strange Pre-Avengers: Infinity War - ? [Marvel/DC crossover]
3. NIGHT LIGHT
Tumblr media
❝Call me a glowstick one more time and you can say goodbye to your other arm.❞
Kyle Rayner was a lost soul. No one would deny it - those that knew him most saw but a spark of the man, the hero, that he used to be. Coming back from the snap did a number on him, realizing the insignificance of everything he's done. Then, he met James Buchanan Barnes. A man just as lost as himself. Can he light the way for them both, or will they be stuck in the shadows forever?
Kyle Rayner x Bucky Barnes Falcon & The Winter Soldier - ? [Marvel/DC crossover]
Tumblr media
NYMMRIL THE GOLD
This is my on-going Lord of the Rings fic! It follows Beorn's ward and fellow skin-changer, Nymmril: a young and jovial man who takes the form of a great lion! It's a Legolas x oc fic, with a dash of Fili x oc sprinkled in the first act. It's a mix of the Jackson films (extended editions ofc) and Tolkein's original works, for the fun and the lore!
I'm currently about half way through Act 1, which begins during The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and follows all the way through to the end of the book. But as a whole, the fic will follow Nymmril's journey through the Fellowship of the Ring and beyond, all the way to Return of the King.
Tumblr media
Nymmril, a young skin-changer from the far deserts, has been under the care of his Keeper Beorn for centuries. With the dragon present, it was deemed too dangerous for him to leave. But what happens when Gandalf and his company of mischievous dwarrow stumble into the Carrock asking for help? Only one thing is for certain: A lion's loyalty is a powerful weapon.

All I Ask Of You
Disc: Don't own LOTR, HOTD & Baldur's Gate
Minors D/N/I and D/N/E.
Chapter 1: Sparring
As your cafè grew, you had to hire a co-barista and two waiters. You had a tea machine, espresso machine, americano machine, lattè machine, cappucino and hot chocolate machine. You had vanilla ice cream freezer and strawberry ice cream freezer, a fridge full of milk, ice fridge freezer, grape juice fridge. On all the counters were the machines, in the corner of the cafè were countertops with cupcake holders, cheesecake holders, tarlet holders, raspberry cake holders and a muffin holders, you had cream, vanilla syrup, cholocate syrup, caramel syrup, you also had a spice rack full of different spices . Your latest drink a raf and to expand your cafè, along with paying taxes for the tax man and your soon-to-be co-workers, you felt the pressure, but kept it cool and aloof at the same time. Inside you were screaming and your necklace vibrated against your neck trying to calm you down.
A maester came in and he looked exhuasted.
"Welcome, first time here?" You asked kindly.
"Yes...what is this place?" The maester asked.
"My Cafè, a none-alcholic restuarant. Here is the Menu. My name is Y/A/N." You said as he sat at the bar nearest the barista's station with the kindest, charismatic smile he saw. He felt himself blush at such a warm, friendly smile, that might, just might lit a fire in the pervy Prince Aegon's heart of King Viserys and Queen Alicent.
He looked at the menu and saw something weird, it was in the very early mornings.
"Can I have this croissant and tea?" He asked.
You agreed and gave him the prices.
And so this maester became a regular of yours. One day he looked troubled and you asked him if you could help, he didn't agree at first, then you use your charismatic smile of yours and he agreed. You checked the list of medical treatment on King Viserys' illness.
"Stay here until it's my closing time. I have a solution." You said.
Then he saw how, you handled pressure and how you sped throughout the day, when it was a quiet time in lunch break, you grabbed a croissant with cream, munched on it as you walked and go to the training grounds.
The three Princes were training on dummies, you even though you were tall for an elfling, whenever you wear a man's clothes, people thought you to be a very pretty boy. So you moved tge dummies and with a real sword you spared against them, smiling as it brought back memmories. The boys had a hard time in touching your skin, how you fought with graceful movements as if it's a hidden dance you invited them to participate.
"If either the three of you were in a battle against an Orc...dead." Y/E/N said, no one saw Y/E/N face, for Y/E/N wore a helmet on. Y/E/N sword pointing at the eldest of 12 summers old, long silver hair and lilac eyes, at his throat.
Y/E/N sparred against the other two princes, your body was behind the second silver haired prince with a high ponytail, while the rest hang loose, you stole the youngest's sword without him even realizing it, body tightly, your swords at his throat and stomach, "If King's Landing were under a siege from a drow raiding party, you would be dead. Then again that race can fight best at nightlife while everyone slumbers." He heard it a very soft musical feminine voice whispering to him, she released him and threw the sword to the youngest of duo he was 8 summers old. You smiled a very sad smile to the young boy.
Shaking your head, you spared against the eight summers old dark brown haired boy with chocolate brown eyes, you point out his flaws and how to improve their swordsmanship. When you hear footsteps long before the trio princes saw The Kings Guard Ser Criston Cole.
"Ser Cole I believe is your surname?" Y/E/N asked.
"Yes?" He answered with a kind smile.
"Your training the boys terrible, if Orcs and even a drow raid party will besiege King's Landing...more dead bodies would fill King's Landing." You said, before he could counter you, the Maester reminded you lunch break was over. You ran and disappeared before the three Princelings could follow you.

Unexpected Fate
INHERITANCE CYCLE (ERAGON) AND LOTR CROSSOVER. VILANSIA AND HER DRAGON, SVELLEVARINA, HAVE SPENT MANY YEARS TRAINING YOUNG DRAGON RIDERS ALONGSIDE ERAGON AND SAPHIRA. BUT, THEIR TIME OF ADVENTURE HAS COME. THE PEOPLE OF MIDDLE EARTH HAVE CALLED FOR AID AND ALAGAESIA WILL ANSWER
Chapter 10: The Breaking of the Fellowship
Tumblr media
The predictable forest landscape along the river bank was interrupted the following day around mid-afternoon by two grand statues on either side of the river. They were much larger than even Saphira herself. Stern expressions were carved into their faces, both of them holding out their hands before them, palms facing us as if motioning those who may oppose them to halt in their presence. Gimli looked on in amazement, no doubt admiring the stonework. Stone crowns were structured atop their heads.
"The Argonath," Legolas informed me. "They are the kin of Aragorn,"
While it was hard to discern a likeness to Aragorn at such a low vantage point, there was no doubt that they all held ancient energy about them. The statues exuded power and strength, something that the ranger was quiet about showing to others. The Argonath marked the point at which the river entered a large lake, the blue water expanding in front of us. The crashing of a waterfall echoed across the waterfront.
Aragorn signaled ahead of us to pull up onto the river bank once we reached the lake, each of our canoes pushing onto the rocky riverside.
"We cross the lake at nightfall," Aragorn told us. "Hide the boats and continue on foot. We approach Mordor from the North,"
"Oh, yes?" Gimli questioned. "Just a simple matter of finding our way through Emyn Muil...an impassible labyrinth of razor-sharp rocks! And after that, it gets even better. Festering, stinking marshland as far as the eye can see,"
Aragorn paused in unpacking his canoe, an eyebrow raised. "That is our road. I suggest you take some rest and recover your strength, Master Dwarf,"
"Recover my-"Gimli grumbled in disbelief. "Recover strength? Pay no heed to that, young Hobbit,"
Pippin did not seem too concerned with Aragorn's friendly jab.
Svellevarina drew my attention to her, her scales sparkling from the water droplets that clung to them. "While the company rests here I will do some hunting. I won't go far, there is plenty of fish within the lake,"
"Very well. Do not close your mind completely to me,"
She nudged my shoulder once before jumping into the air, the wind from her wings rustling our clothes and shifting the canoes slightly. I watched her skim the surface of the water in search of fish, her senses focused on the hunt. I turned away after a moment, leaving her be.
Merry and Pippin snacked on a portion of the lembas bread provided to us by Lady Galadriel with Gimli, taking full advantage of the time we had on the shore. I helped Sam set up a small cooking fire, waiting until he had set up small sticks in a pointed, circular formation before snapping my fingers together to reveal small sparks. The Hobbits watched in awe as I snapped my fingers again, releasing the magic towards the deadfall and allowing it to catch fire.
"The word for fire in the ancient language is brisingr," I told them. Pippin began chanting the word under his breath, trying his best to commit it to memory. "Take heart, that is no easy spell for beginner magicians,"
Sam leaned against a large boulder behind him, crossing his arms tight against him as he shut his eyes for a quick rest as he waited for the fire to reach proper cooking temperature.
Merry sat up from where he sat next to Pippin. "Where's Frodo?"
Sam's eyes snapped open as he scrambled onto his feet. As I looked, I noticed that both he and Boromir were nowhere in sight. I extended my mind in search of the Hobbit, but his mind was shielded from me, preventing me from finding him. I cursed myself for not maintaining surveillance. I was able to find Boromir, who was deep within the forest.
"Remain here," Aragorn said. "I will go after him," he ran into the woods, a hand resting on the hilt of his weapon.
I felt Legolas' unease rise, causing certain stress of my own. I reached out to Svellevarina, making sure that she was not too far.
The clang of metal swords colliding suddenly echoed throughout the forest, the sound easily reaching my pointed ears. There was no hesitation in Legolas as he ran into the forest after the ranger towards the sound of fighting. Gimli gathered his axe in his hands before joining the Elf.
I reached out to Svell, urging her to fly as fast as she possibly could. She acknowledged my request and I felt her drawing closer. I faced the three Hobbits, their faces scared. I knelt before them, making sure they paid attention to what I told them.
"It is imperative that you remain here. Hide if you must but do not go into the forest after us. We will return once everything is safe. Do you understand?" They nodded their heads but said nothing. "It will be okay, little ones," I stood up, letting a wave of ease wash over them from me. I noticed their shoulder relax ever so slightly before I turned and sprinted into the trees toward the sound of clanging metal and yells. The leaves that made up the treetops rustled from the wind of Svellevarina as she flew above me, following closely.
I entered a clearing in the forest where a stone structure was built on the hill, stone steps leading to a flat elevated surface. The three other members of the company were already present, fighting off the coming onslaught of orcs. Boromir, however, was not in sight, though I still sensed that he was still alive. I unsheathed my rider weapon, holding it out before me as I released a battle cry, plunging myself into the crowd of orcs. They were considerably taller than the creatures we fought in the Mines of Moria, their strength instantly noticeable. It presented a challenge, even for my speed and experience, as their thick armour proved more difficult to slice through. I made sure to take aim for areas of skin that were exposed.
With a snarl, an orc swung its weapon at my head. I ducked, swinging my blade from the left side in an arc to the right, sinking it deep into the back of its knees. I pulled the sword towards my chest, slicing through. It shrieked, falling to the ground as blood gushed out
Svellevarina roared, causing the fighting to pause as she dived down into the crowd of orcs, swinging her tail as she landed, sending those nearest her tumbling into the air. She snapped up a few in her jaws, snapping them in two as she bit down, her teeth having no trouble in piercing their armour.
"Find the halfling!" One of the orcs bellowed. "Find the halfling!"
A portion of the orcs bypassed us, running into the woods in search of Frodo. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli ran after them as I remained next to my dragon, taking on the orcs that attempted to join those that made it into the forest. A droplet of sweat ran down my forehead, and I drew upon the energy within the sparkling opal that rested within the hilt of my weapon. I extended my left hand as I cast a spell, the orcs closest to me dropping to the ground as their life left them, the remaining energy flowing into the gem on my weapon.
The sound of a horn resounded through the forest. I paused, turning towards the sound. I extended my mind to check on the status of the company. Fear and panic ripped through me. Boromir was in grave danger, and he wasn't alone. Somehow Merry and Pippin were both with him.
I ran into the forest as Svellevarina blocked the path of the orcs to me. I used my magic to kill any orcs that crossed my path as I raced towards Boromir's energy. I made it to where Legolas and Gimli were fighting an aggregation of orcs, Legolas was now making use of his daggers, his quiver of arrows empty. I swung my blade at an oncoming orc, the bloodied sword landing with a thud in its side. I pulled, letting it cut open the creature's flesh. It continued coming, thrusting it's angled weapon towards my chest. I jumped out of the way, the tip of the weapon just grazing above my collar bone near my shoulder. I hissed, clenching my teeth at the sting of the cut, extending my blade forward to stab through the orc's back. With a snarl, the orc's life left him, my weapon piercing its heart.
I gasped, as I clutched at my chest, a great pain ripping through me. I turned with my hand on my chest, looking around me. I turned, taking in the sight of Boromir further down the hill as an arrow stuck out from his chest. With a twang another arrow was released, landing in the man's stomach. He paused for only a moment before he kept on fighting, swinging at the orcs that neared him. I felt the fear of the Merry and Pippin as they watched Boromir defend them. I blocked my mind from Boromir's pain, charging forward in an attempt to reach him. Aragorn managed to first, though, taking on the orc that fired the arrows. Gimli had taken to wrestling an orc on the ground, beheading the creature with his axe. I continued to fight through the orcs, a group of them making it past Boromir and towards Merry and Pippin, sweeping them up off the ground and carrying them away. I yelled, releasing my energy to the orcs that were left here, using my magic to snap all of their necks. As they crumbled to the ground, I too fell on my knees. Boromir had fallen, three arrows protruding from his torso. Aragorn was at his side, his hand clasped tightly with Boromir's. I could feel Svellevarina's concern through our connection.
"I would have followed you, my brother, my captain, my king," Boromir said breathlessly to Aragorn. He choked slightly on his breath before his eyes focused on the trees that grew above him. His life left him at that moment, his grip on Aragorn's hand going limp.
"Be at peace, son of Gondor," Aragorn said softly before kissing his forehead. "They will look for his coming at the White Tower, but he will not return,"
Legolas stepped forward to help Aragorn carry him back towards the river. Gimli and I followed them until we reached the river bank, where Svellevarina met us. I stood next to her, relying on her for emotional strength. Boromir's body was laid within one of the canoes, his sword placed on his chest within his grip. Aragorn placed his broken horn within the canoe as well. We stood for a moment in silence before he pushed the canoe out onto the water where it was carried towards the waterfall. Svellevarina lifted her head to the sky, releasing a mournful roar. I offered a blessing for his soul, providing whatever guidance he may need to the gods that his people believed in.
Legolas grabbed hold of the remaining canoe. "Hurry! Frodo and Sam have reached the Eastern shore,"
I looked out across the lake to see the second canoe on the river bank. I could feel both Sam and Frodo, their intentions clear to me then.
Upon noticing that none of us had moved to join him, Legolas looked back to Aragorn. "You mean not to follow them,"
"Frodo's fate is no longer in our hands," Aragorn said simply.
"Then this has all been in vain," Gimli said beside me. He hung his head. "The Fellowship has failed,"
"Not if we hold true to each other," Aragorn replied, looking to each of us. "We will not abandon Merry and Pippin to torment and death, not while we have strength left. Leave all that can be spared behind, we travel light," His expression changed to one of fierce determination. "Let us hunt some orc,"
Gimli grinned wickedly. "Yes!"
Aragorn hoisted his pack over his shoulder, then took off into the forest. Gimli was quick to follow him, his grip on his bloodied axe tight.
I took a moment to ensure that the saddlebags were secured in place before wiping the gore from my weapon. I returned it to its sheath on my hip, looking out to the waterfall. My heart was heavy with loss. To feel the life leave Boromir was something no amount of training could have prepared me for. I leaned against Svell's side as I shuddered. The images of what occurred only moments before flashing before my eyes. The terror in the Hobbit's eyes as they were carried away. Oh, gods, they did not deserve this.
"Vilansia," Svellevarina said gently. "Come, we must go after them to prevent whatever danger awaits them,"
To be overcome with emotion was something I had never experienced before. Despite my Elvish nature, I could not find the words to communicate with my dragon and instead let my feelings speak for me. I felt her surprise for a moment before she forced her calm to wash over me.
A hand on my shoulder forced my attention to the world around me again. Legolas stood in front of me, concern clear on his face.
"We mustn't tarry, Vilansia," he said gently.
"Eka kenna," I replied, my voice brittle. I cleared my throat, forcing my shoulders back. "My apologies, Legolas. Come, let us catch up with the others,"
He paused a moment, giving me a knowing look. "There is no shame in having grief. This is a dark moment for the Fellowship," He looked up to Svell as if saying something to her as well. "Do not carry your sorrow with you, as there is hope yet," He squeezed my shoulder slightly before letting his hand fall back to his side. He smiled slightly, extending his left arm out to his side, gesturing for me to take to lead and catch up with the other two.
I swallowed thickly, letting Svellevarina's calm settle within me. I gave a determined nod, my jaw clenched and began to jog into the woods after the remainder of the Fellowship, Legolas close behind me. Svellevarina took to the air, remaining as close as possible to us. Boromir gave his life to protect Merry and Pippin. I would not allow his death to be in vain.

if someone was on the fence abt checking out any of your hyperfixations, what would you tell them to persuade them to actually look into it?
basically: what do you think are the best points/parts of the hyperfixes?
Ooh, this is an interesting question! (Thank you for asking it!) I'll have to put some thought in my answer to this one. Or, since you guys are reading this after I've written it, I will have put some thought into this answer xD
Anyways! I'll go through each hyperfixation I mentioned in the QnA post piecemeal, starting with...
(continued under the cut because this one turned into kinda long one, whoops)
BIONICLE
I've already talked at about as much length as I've been able to get away with about Bionicle on this blog, including this post where I do my best to surmize the entire Bionicle canon, and this post where I was asked to show off my Bionicle collection. (Good times xD)
If someone's on the fence about Bionicle, I'd be honest and tell them that it's a story spread out of a great deal of expanded media (toys, comics, online serials, movies, and videos) that was all released between 2001 and 2010. Not that it'll be impossible to consume the story and enjoy it, but it might get a bit finnicky. xD
If you're willing to give it a try, though, you'll be met with, in my obviously biased opinion, a really damn good story. The fact that it's so sprawling, and there are so many smaller stories in it, means that the world feels incredibly realised, and there's probably at least half a dozen serials and comics that fit the exact tone your looking for; whether that tone is 'character gets cut in half by an interdimensional portal that closes on them while they're only partly through', or 'character makes a canon "I use two guns because I have two hands" joke'.
The real strength of the story, though, is that it's very cheesy in a lot of ways, but it's played straight enough, and delivered with enough heart, that it becomes very earnest and a joy to experience. It feels like a classic 'epic' story, akin to something like Lord of the Rings - in LOTR, Aragorn leads the Army of the Dead to save the besieged Minas Tirith from Sauron’s Orcs, and in Bionicle, Jaller leads the Ta-Koro Guard and the Gukko Force to save the Chronicler’s Company from the Rahi. It's that kinda vibe, you know? There's a lot of weird and crazy stuff inside (both in a whimsical sense and in a horrifying sense), but it's played straight, internally consistent, and manages to be cool more often than not. If that sounds like you're thing, then I think Bionicle might be worth checking out :)
TLDR BEST PART: 'Epic' story told across multiple media that's a lot of fun digging into
FALLOUT: NEW VEGAS
Oh, Fallout: New Vegas, my beloved. The more experienced with RPG videogames I've gained over the years, the more convinced I've become that New Vegas is the best RPG videogame. Ok, if you're on the fence about New Vegas, here's what I'd say: the level of narrative control that the player gets is incredible.
A lot of RPG games have an issue where you're kinda railroaded into a plot. To use other examples from the same series; in Fallout 3, you being from a vault with a scientist father is a non-negotiable aspect to your character. (And you probably murdered a whole bunch of security guards to actually leave the vault, whoops.) In Fallout 4, the game's entire plot hinges on whether you give a toss about your kidnapped son - if you don't, or you want to play a character that doesn't, there's a real lack of immersion in so much of the world you interact with, because the game takes for granted the idea that you're invested in the story they've come up with.
In Fallout New Vegas, you are linked to the plot by a single inciting incident (that I won't spoil here because I think it's kinda cool to experience lmao). You wake up, you spend like 8 minutes (or 30 seconds if you know what you want from the get-go) making your character, you leave the building you start in, and from then on, you have total narrative freedom. The plot runs entirely off of your own initiative - if you want to, you can go track it down from the get go (and most people do, because it's a good plot hook that raises a lot of intriguing questions), but if you want to, you can also ignore it completely!! You can follow it in multiple different ways, too - either following clues around the long end of the map, or beelining it through the most dangerous parts of the map straight to the city of New Vegas. And the way the dialogue and characters are written not only accounts for the choices you might make, but also doesn't PRESUME that you're going to deal with this plot, and doesn't force you to keep focusing your character on it all the time. It only comes up when other characters - who were involved in the plot before you ever came along - want to get you involved for their own benefit, and even then, you can feasibly tell 'em all to get stuffed if you want!
I've played through New Vegas like,,, 5-ish times, and I've gone in a different direction from that spawn more or less every time, and I've STILL had a fulfilling RPG experience that I can create a story out of every time so far! It almost feels like a sandbox game, and it's so weird and refreshing. For that aspect alone, I'd say it's worth giving a look! :D
(Also, uh, the actual plot and all of the side quests are really good, and the characters are really great and compelling, and the 4 story DLC are all separate experiences but also have their own interconnected story that coalesces into the last one which is really fuckin cool, and you can go on a mission to find a new brain for a cyborg dog that belongs to a leader of a gang of Elvis Presley impersonators, and also "Nobody's dick's that long. Not even Long Dick Johnson, and he had a fucking long dick, hence the name" is an actual line of dialogue. Just please play New Vegas if you have any interest in story-driven videogames. I'm begging ya.)
TLDR BEST PART: ludicrous amounts of player freedom to engage with a really well-written story how they see fit
MASS EFFECT
Uh, yeah. Me bigging up another RPG videogame right after I just said that New Vegas was the best one is probably a bit weird, huh? (Especially bc I stand by that statement, New Vegas slaps, go play it)
But here's the thing. Mass Effect does essentially drag you along on a story it's telling. But the story it's telling is - for the most part! - really fucking compelling and well-put-together. It's this big, longform story set in a Star Trek universe (intimate and interesting sci-fi detail) with Star Wars protagonists (interesting, violent, madcap characters), and as someone who's had a lot of fun with modern science fiction, it hit really well for me xD
Actually, I'd take it further than 'hit really well' - I honestly have no idea why it worked for me specifically, but it was the most engaging and, like, visceral gaming experience I can remember having. Project Overlord had me hunched over a sink genuinely worried I was gonna throw up, the Citadel DLC had me laughing out loud and gleefully liveblogging my whole experience to my friends who'd already played it, and the ending - lame as I'd heard it was gonna be - still left a pit in my gut, in a good way.
(I think in my case it helped that I played it with the perfect level of contextual knowledge vs. going in blind. I did my first playthrough with the Legendary edition (all 3 games + all DLC in one remastered package), so I wasn't missing out on anything, and I knew going in that the ending was bad enough that people were complaining about coloured lights almost a decade down the line, which meant that I'd built it up enough in my head that when it happened I was like "oh, that wasn't actually that bad".)
My TLDR is that it's a really really engaging story with some ESPECIALLY amazing character work (oh, man, the characters/companions and the dynamics you can build with them basically make this trilogy). Just get the legendary edition (because some of the best companions are technically DLC, because fuckin' EA), get a friend who's played it before to nudge you and make sure you don't miss any of the little details, and assume that the ending sucks, and I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time. :D
(Also the 4th game (Andromeda) isn't as bad as a lot of people say it is but my fixation here is really on the original trilogy, so that's what I'm referring to with this one. Fingers crossed for the 5th installment!)
TLDR BEST PART: Fun adventure with really well-realised characters that grips you emotionally in a way that few videogames (to my knowledge) have been able to lay claim to
WARRIOR CATS
I think the most interesting thing about this series is that it's pretty raw? for a series that's marketed to children?? I'm aware that's not a unique thing, I know about Animorphs and Watership Down - and hey, I grew up on The Clone Wars - but it's still noteworthy! And what's cool about it in Warrior Cats, like it is in these other media, is that it doesn't really feel forced, or gratuitous, or even necessarily contradict the fact that it's media aimed at a younger audience (even if I'm not sure they wouldn't have gotten away with some of the stuff they did if it wasn't done with cats lmao).
The main plot compliments these darker elements as well - it's essentially a character drama built around secrets and political espionage, as well as an outsider's perspective clashing with longstanding traditions; exploring why those traditions are in place, but also what kind of damage they can cause.
And hey, the characters are good too! I'd argue that the 'Clan' dynamic hits its peak in the first series (the first 6 books) and never really reaches the same heights in later series, but I think every story arc so far has had multiple characters that people have really enjoyed. The fact that the entire series has taken place over -multiple generations- at this point is something that a lot of other media doesn't get the chance to do, and it serves a lot of Warrior Cats' longform storytelling really well (even if some of the writing decisions that the authors have made over the decades have been [???] lmao).
TLDR BEST PART: Longform dramatic storytelling that has some really compelling character and plotwork, and also has some grim shit happen without going over-the-top or being obnoxious about it
(Personally I'd recommend just the first 9 books in the series - that's the 'Prophecies Begin' series and the first half 'New Prophecy' series - because I think that's Warrior Cats at its peak, but there's things to enjoy in every story arc if you want to read further ^_^)

Aand that's me talking about those hyperfixations I mentioned! Sorry it took so long to finally publish an answer to this ask - a lot of thought went into this one xDD

As someone who's starting to write Gorillaz fan fiction (very late to the party, lol), may I ask for tips for a good characterization of the band?? What character traits do you like to see the most when you write/read?
OOo congrats, and good luck! And of course. I'll try to answer the best that I can, but I'll be honest with you - I don't read much Gorillaz fic because I've historically had trouble finding work that matches how I see the band, and I eventually stopped looking for Gorillaz fic altogether (though this doesn't mean I won't read them if someone recs me something with my interests in mind). I've always been under the impression that my characterizations and interpretations of band dynamics have been pretty unique, though I make it work somehow by having canon justifications for all the choices I make. So basically....feel free to disregard my suggestions because I may lead you down the path of what's less popular, I won't be offended lmao.
Anyhow, this kinda leads into my first pointer - it's good to have at least some canon justification for the choices you make. This may sound limiting, but it doesn't have to be! I think too many people stick to one particular way of portraying 2Doc and/or the band in general and miss out on a lot of interesting, new directions stories could go. For example, back around last Christmas, I had a discussion with friends about a joke Christmas Carol AU. Initially, people were like, “Murdoc is Scrooge.” This makes sense! But why couldn’t Russel or even Noodle get chance at being in this role? It’s not as intuitive, sure, but imo, it could definitely work. Familiarizing yourself with the canon and how that could translate to an AU or a new scenario can go a long way and make your story stick out, and you might be surprised at the kinds of interpretations you can defend.
I always like to re-read ROTO when I'm getting into the Gorillaz writing ~zone. It helps me sharpen up on the dialogue and speech patterns.
Researching home towns, local slang, important pop culture and significant events of the past and present, etc can help add more depth to your characterization. I remember researching Brooklyn in the 80s for a Russel fic I did a while back, and I received a lot of positive feedback about how realistic and relatable it made my depiction of Russel.
Don't be afraid to expand on canon within reason. One of my favorite self-indulgent hcs is nerdy 2D. Canon establishes him as a horror/zombie film enthusiast. I like to take it a step further and throw sci-fi and fantasy into the mix. He makes the occasionally LOTR or GOT reference, or be setting reminders on his phone so he doesn't miss the newest terrible SyFy Channel original movie when I'm writing him. It makes him more endearing to me for whatever reason.
As for character traits...this is very subjective, so go with your heart. Your unique perspective, whether it matches up with what's "popular" or not, is important. A lot of times, it make the story feel more genuine. All interpretations are valid, too, and just because it may not be one person’s preference, doesn’t mean someone else won’t enjoy it. Personal favorites of mine include: Murdoc with a vulnerable side, Murdoc with a talent for writing, Latino Murdoc, guarded/introverted Noodle, taxidermy enthusiast Russel, self-centered 2D, egotistical 2D, 2D with a backbone, sports fan 2D.
I hope this sort of helps. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

Hello can I have a male matchup for Game of Thrones, LOTR, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, DC and Marvel?
𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗬: Muggleborn Ravenclaw with a patronous spirit of Hummingbird, an INFJ (last time I checked at MBTI test), my enneagram is 4w5 and my moral alignment is Neutral Good. I may have a slight introverted tendencies and awkward nature, I describe myself as fiery, swears like a sailor, confident, jokester, and, passionate. Religious, super talkative, sometimes hyper (because of excitement), giggly (I always laugh for stupid reasons), nerdy, actually sweet and nice though I can be aloof, intimidating, and scary when I get so angry. I tend to become really fiesty, stands boldly on what I believe (claiming myself as a realist though some of my views doesn't makes sense), and unbothered to be true to myself, clumsy, stubborn, hopeless romantic, young-at-heart, unfortunate and inattentive. I have "no bs" towards the people that I hate, sarcasam and savagery is my main language. But on the other side, I overthink a lot and cry over small things many times, small mistakes leads me to provoke me even more that sounds like a drama queen, yet recognizes a soft spot for dumb jokes, cheesy pickup lines and prefer people with a good sense of humour who see myself as equal. Chill in academics, but very competitive that manages to the top even for my dreams---I'm very dedicated on what I want for my life, and I display modesty and gracefulness towards some people that deserves respect. One notable feature about her is her multi-potentiality due to being naturally gifted in artistic fields (this includes singing).
𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗦: Arts, choir, poetry, karaoke, literature, history, makeup, beauty pageants, fun/deep/dumb conversations, expanding my knowledge in Christianity, documentaries (about saints), reading interesting stuffs, talking about social issues, and creative writing, chilling both indoors and outdoors.
𝗛𝗢𝗕𝗕𝗜𝗘𝗦: Drawing, singing, dancing when nobody's around (I'm very bad at it), sharing nerdy or opinionated thoughts, walking like a model (if I ever feel so confident), sleeping, listening to music (from rock to kpop), chatting or browsing on social media, watching videos on YouTube, making terrible jokes/puns, watching cartoons, writing, reading interesting things, and conceptualizing my artworks. I also used to study Italian language a bit
Yep! Sorry for the wait. And sorry it’s so short. It’s been hard for me to focus on anything today lol
Game of Thrones ~ Samwell Tarly. It’s hard for me to explain but I can see you and Samwell being the sweetest, cutest couple. Like your personalities would mesh well. And you’d have the greatest chats.
Tumblr media
Lord of the Rings ~ Peregrin Took. Honestly, there’s never been a more obvious choice for me than to match you with Pippin. Your personalities, some of your interests and hobbies match so well. He’d absolutely adore you.
Tumblr media
Supernatural ~ Kevin Tran. This one was a bit difficult because three names jumped out at me for SPN but I think Kevin is the absolute best one. You would make an adorable couple.
Tumblr media
The Vampire Diaries ~ Elijah Mikaelson. Different route here, sorta. But I think you two would be just similar enough and just different enough that you’d bring out the best in each other. Plus during your clumsy moments, Elijah is always there to catch you and keep you from getting hurt.
Tumblr media
DC ~ Wally West. Specifically the DCAU version. I think that while you two aren’t all that similar, there is enough in common to keep you from butting heads and you two would perfectly contrast each other.
Tumblr media
Marvel ~ Loki. You two would be such an adorable couple, I can’t even think of how to word it properly. Loki would love your jokester, stubborn, aloof and hopeless romantic sides all equally. And he’d definitely enjoy your swearing.

[Review] The Lord of the Rings Online (PC)
Tumblr media
My first MMO experience!
I knew I wanted to close out my current playthrough of LotR-adjacent games with a dive into the long-running MMORPG (15 years and still getting updates!). The question is, how much to play? Where do I stop? I knew I had to reign in my addictive personality. I considered a time cap, but that could be too abrupt. Luckily while I was considering it a new expansion was announced that catered to lower-level players. Great! “Before the Shadow” was an ideal addition for a first-timer. I eventually settled on doing that as well as the regular intro stuff, up to the end of the “Shadows of Angmar” storyline that the game originally launched with in 2007. I spent 100 hours in this world getting to level 40 with my elven Loremaster Nelduilas and had a grand time.
This is another of the “non-movie licence” games. I suppose it can look generic at times but they’ve done a good job maintaining a consistent sense of place while having distinctive-looking areas to explore. As far as I know this is a World of Warcraft-like game; my only previous attempts at MMO games were the browser-based text-and-stick-figure RPG Kingdom of Loathing and a brief dalliance with Maple Story. For an initiate things can be overwhelming: a baffling array of skill icons, an alphabet of hotkeys, systems upon systems. Plus the monetisation strategies that have been shoved in. Tactically ignoring some mechanics can help to get a grip on the core open-world questing adventure, but I was still learning nuances and new tricks well into my 100 hours of playtime.
Perhaps all MMOs plan to run forever, but Turbine surely didn’t know how the gaming landscape would change in 15 years. Since its launch things have been streamlined and much content added, with capped level 50 adventuring expanding now to 140 and many new regions of Middle-Earth, not to mention Standing Stone Games taking over as the maintainer and developer (a company set up to do just that for this and D&D Online) and a transition to free-to-play. But it’s all been building on a 2007 game at its heart and the engine shows its age in its limitations. Still, it’s impressive that they’ve managed to keep it running and with the right mindset I could easily overlook some clunkiness... I’m just glad this is still active and hasn’t become lost media like many failed MMOs.
For me a big appeal of this game was existing in this fictional world and expanding on plots and off-handedly mentioned areas and cultures from the books. The game world is simply enormous, which presents a problem for travel but is great for worldbuilding. Like other game spinoffs, the focus of this initial arc is the “meanwhile” scenario: Frodo and the Fellowship take the Ring south, but meanwhile so much other stuff is happening up north. The resurgence of Angmar and minions of the Witch-King, peripheral events related to the machinations of Sauron and Saruman, or just helping a hobbit get some vegetables. There’s only so much depth this kind of game and engine can deliver in terms of presentation but there’s a heck of a lot of breadth in plot and NPCs and oh so much murdering of beasties and nasty folk.
In my playthrough I wanted to play a “pet class” who could summon minions to do the battling for me. Sadly I discovered that I would be limited to only one at a time, but the flexible Loremaster is I think ideal for this combat engine. I had a nice array of ranged attacks and (after cycling through various bears and birds) even got a ranged pet, the bog-guardian, a spindly kind of fantasy swamp-beast like something out of Dark Crystal. I specialised my skills to boost its power and let it do a lot of the work. We were a pretty good team. Speaking of which, as an MMO, players exist in a persistent world alongside each other, but I rarely encountered other human-controlled characters in the wild, whether because of my timezone, the sheer size of the world, or the general slow burn of this now 15-year-old game. When it happened and I was able to team up with someone to fight through a zone or tackle some instances it was a great feeling and I had some lovely interactions, but I was content playing this as a really large solo RPG for most of the time.
The handicaps on a non-paying player aren’t too stringent but things do get a bit nicer when you drop some dough on the game. This includes buying the Before the Shadow expansion, which also adds two new zones in the south-east of Eriador full of questing and a self-contained side-story involving an ex-Dunedain, Saruman’s sinister expanding reach, the fallen kingdoms of Arnor, and Boromir’s journey to Rivendell (plus a bit of Celebrimbor backstory). There’s the option to start a new character here directly but I made my way over after doing the default intro stuff in Ered Luin, the Shire, and Bree. Then, after ranging around the Lone-Lands east of Bree and the North Downs plus the Yule event zone, I was ready to pack it in... for now.
A quick note on diversity since that’s interesting to compare to other media in this fictional universe. Some good stuff at least in female representation, lots of women everywhere doing all sorts of things, and no impact on a player’s abilities. No lady dwarves though, and no non-binary or LGBT rep that I saw. Ethnically it’s a bit mono-culture but there are examples of good-aligned communities of darker-skinned people and even giants and such. The character creator also lets you pick a variety of skin tones... depending on your character’s “origin”. For example, elves are generally very white while dwarves and Harfoot or Stoor-descended hobbits can be darker. Rohan humans are white, but those from Dale or Gondor have more options. So a few ticks on that score. Anyway.
I just found this a really engaging way to get immersed in Tolkien’s world in a direct way. Being an adventurer among many, boots on the ground, solving small problems that build up to larger heroics. Having so much freedom with so much to discover but still being guided in a story—and many small story-ettes. As an MMO it’s a big commitment to get involved in but perhaps the best expression of Middle-Earth in a video game, just because of its scope. And as a game experience I just found it nice to chill out with due to the repetition and slow pace. Just like Tolkien’s prose, am I right!! (I’m joking.)

Unprotected by infiniteeight | Teen Wolf | Peter/Stiles | 2k | The pack leaves Stiles unprotected during his heat. Peter takes advantage.
things to never give the devil by Fahye | Our Flag Means Death | Blackbeard/Stede | 15k | "Dark Fate?" says Stede, making sure to pronounce the capitals.
In A Year by tenddisorder | The Untamed | Xue Yang/Song Lan/Xiao Xingchen | 59k | When Song Lan wants to defy the natural order of things, there's only one person he can turn to.
dirtbag by spqr | The Goldvinch | Theodore/Boris | 10k |  💋, Boris replies.
Hanging Tree by ChuckleVoodoos | Hannibal | Hannibal/Will | 13k |  Will has often wondered sort of person his soulmate must be, to have cast such a sinister mark onto his skin.
Tired by spqr | Merlin | Merlin/Arthur | 9k | It wasn’t until Arthur collapsed in the middle of a training sortie that he admitted he may have been ensorcelled.
i like my empty life (but dang!) by Wildehack (tyleet) | WWDITS | Nandor/Guillermo | 16k |  “Speak to me,” Nandor says, sounding portentous.
Clear Blue Sky by spqr | Suits | Harvey/Mike | 17k | Whenever Mike’s allowed herself to think about Harvey and sex, she’s mostly imagined: Clooney and Lopez in Out of Sight, Bruce Wayne and Bond girls, clandestine choreographed encounters in anonymous hotel rooms, gorgeous Italian and Russian and other such intimidatingly foreign supermodels peeling him carefully out of tuxedos with price tags that would make Mike’s eyes water – neat, elegant encounters that left the women as puddles of goo and Harvey cooly unaffected, lighting a cigar on the balcony and looking appraisingly out at the city while his partners recovered.
December
Lest We Forget by @tierfal | FMA | Roy/Ed | 26k | Ed wakes up in the sewers with very little recollection of how he got there, wearing seriously boring clothes. It's… probably going to be fine.
Winter's Crown by astolat | GOT | Jaime/Robb | 76k | “When the Night’s King rides,” the giant said, each word slow as cold honey pouring, “the King in the North must answer. The King in the North…whose name is Stark.”
Only One Truth to Face by giraffeter | The Untamed | SXX | 11k | There’s a group of teenagers messing around out front, and one of them is Xue Yang.
Lover's Curse by littlesystems | The Untamed | Wangxian | 16k | “Are you familiar,” Lan Xichen says, “with the Lover’s Curse?”
The Kissing Thing by thistledome | Stranger Things | Eddie/Steve | The slow but inevitable queer awakening of Steve Harrington through the pursuit of casual make out sessions and pointed guidance from his friends, followed by his eventual realisation that the boy he wanted was in front of him all along.
