Rabbits and hares are different genuses. It's not really accurate to call a jackrabbit a rabbit as they are hares.
They're called that because early American settlers thought jackrabbits looked kinda like a European rabbit with a jackass's (donkey's) ears.
In reality, it was they who were the jackasses for confusing north American lagomorph nomenclature. Also for all the colonialism and Native American genocide.
Though I guess it's good they didn't name them "Ass Hares".
Anyways, to tell rabbits and hares apart, remember that bnnuy rabbits are smol cute while hares are skrunkly cute.
And then there's pikas. Pikas are ridiculously cute. =:3
The pika is a small mountain-dwelling animal, with close relations to rabbits, whose habitat includes the high rocky mountain regions of Asia and North America.
There are currently 30 recognized species of pika which comprise approximately one-third of all lagomorphs.
