Postcard Roughs

Initial sketches from a selection of poems I felt I could work best with. I started by writing out key visuals I could illustrate, I then sketched out the composition, photocopied these and drew on top with black pen as this would be more like the final style. I also included the written poem next to the illustration to visualise where the writing could sit on the postcards. This will be experimented further.

Critique:

‘Box of Chocolates’: Facial expressions not clear, Malteasers spelling mistake.

‘The Parking Palava’: Thought bubble not clear what it is, perhaps one car should be further into the space. Also, if it was a full bubble it would make more sense, it kind of looks like the wall is falling. Tinned goods are nice and simple.

‘Tumble Dryer’: dripping tears look clearer than spraying droplets. Just use one.

‘Heatwave’: shocked kids work well, Michael Gove could be drawn more accurately, also his hand are the wrong way around.

‘Philip’s Proposal’: The ring doesn’t look quite right, elephant is clear and appealing.

‘The Bird Feeder’: Like the angry looking car, conveys that Fred is a bit of a Dick, perspective works well with the scene.

‘The Thatcher’s’: Margaret needs to be more recognisable, dennis is slightly tipping which needs fixing. Layout of the typography works well.

‘Wasp and Bee’: scene layout works well, shapes of the creatures depicts their different characteristics, layout of typography works well with the composition.

‘Where’s Wally’: Could have a hat lying somewhere, sheets should be pink which is a nice addition, having the mum on the other side of the composition would work better. Regarding typography ‘where’s wally’ doesn’t need to be repeated, play with the scaling of it, two lines conveys the shouting well.

‘The Post Office’: Originally going to draw the queue of people, but it might not be needed. Make the till/kiosk more structured, its floating.

Poetry Collaboration Initial Discussion

Postcards for collaborator’s show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival

I decided to do this commission for poet Olly Watson to help boost my portfolio. It would be helpful to me regarding my publication work in page layouts, particularly with my small digestible leaflet for my FMP. (Final Major Project) My last collaboration was successful and this challenge will give me the opportunity to work on my visual language.

The project is to illustrate 10 poems, on 10 postcards, to help promote his poetry at his show and around the Norwich area. He wants it to be fun and to grab potential audience members interest, in the hope that they will send the postcards on to others. The brief is that the imagery and poetry would be on the front, with a normal postcard layout on the back, plus our individual contact details.

After our discussion, it was clear that he wanted something drawn more literally and not abstract as I had done. I will therefore be creating some sketches from the poems he sends me taking the key visual elements and illustrating them. Due to the humorous and slightly offensive nature of some of his poems there is a possibility for slightly dark and twisted drawings which will be fun to play with. I also get to choose which poems we use, which will depend on the ones I can get the most visual content from, and if they are too offensive I might not want them in my portfolio. Olly said I can be completely honest regarding this as this is for my professional career I am in control. I will be writing up a proposal and including initial sketches after I receive the poems, with a proposed fee of £7.50/hour with a rough guide to how many hours I am willing to spend due to the hand in deadline and project commitments.
