Ooblets: How Greed Blinds and Brings the Worst in People

Ooblets. A game which has been said to be going on Steam for quite some time. The developers giving no such a notion that an exclusivity deal would be struck with Epic Games.

That didn’t last long.

Back in June, I decided to take a look at the game and thought it looked absolutely adorable. Cute little figures with farming mechanics made my heart melt.Hell, you can even battle the small creatures. So far it’s being developed by a team named “Glumberland” who is a relationship duo of Ben and Rebecca. It was a stellar idea which felt *personal*. It felt like a warm game community. It just...felt so comfortable.

Now. As a small indie team of two, I could understand the need for the exclusive money deal. They even made this point in the blog post (link below the picture). Epic Exclusivity deals are wonderful payouts for those who are rather afraid their game may not make it and give more resources to make the game better. So I felt it was quite fine to take the deal other than a few gripes. You all know my stance on Epic Games, but I felt like this was justified so long as they just explained the reasons.

But no. They had to become *smart* in their blog by saying anyone who doesn’t like their decision is a toxic gamer, or that anyone who cares about this should dedicate their time somewhere else as if people can’t have a hobby and dedication they absolutely love and care deeply for.Trying to give horrendous bullshit reasons about using EGS because “steam was like this 15 years ago!” yeah. It was. When the market was completely brand new.

All the devs needed to say was they needed some cash. Everyone would have understood. Making a game with two people, a game that looks THIS nice in the trailers no less, is incredibly difficult.

Nope. Instead...They decided to go on their Discord and uh...Do this.

Oh boy. This did not please fans.

Not at all.

Let this be a lesson to future Indie Devs who can’t handle getting a large batch of money...:Purchase the assistance of a PR professional and not call many of the fans you once had as “toxic gamers” just because we refused to accept either your decision for epic exclusivity (again, I am okay with it this time), or because we don’t enjoy being called toxic just because we have valid criticism.

Also. “ So let’s remember that this is all low-stakes video game stuff we’re dealing with here. Nothing to get worked up about. And I (Ben/perplamps) will be around on our Discord to answer any questions and talk through any concerns or confusion you might still have. “

Right. So we can’t have strong opinions or we are all toxic gamers, huh? Also. VERY nice deleting all of the shit storm that happened on your r/Ooblets subreddit. Very professional.

Good luck selling your game about love and fun cute stuff when your personality seems to be the exact opposite.
